Timeline
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
The video begins by discussing Carl Jung's philosophy, highlighting the idea that our irritation with others can reveal aspects of ourselves, particularly our 'shadow'. It introduces Jung's significant contributions to understanding the human mind and proposes that by confronting our shadows, we may gain deeper self-understanding.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
Jung's early influences and personal experiences are outlined, including his conflict with rigid religious beliefs and his initial pursuits in medicine. The transition to psychiatry and the critical turning point in his mid-thirties when he confronted his unconscious is explored, leading to his studies at Burk Holley Psychiatric Hospital and his relationship with Freud.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
The video delves into Jung's development of key psychological concepts such as the ego, personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious, outlining these structures' roles in human behavior and personal development. Robuste examples are given to illustrate Jung's belief in the universal nature of archetypes across cultures.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
Next, the archetypes defined by Jung are identified, including Persona, Shadow, Anima/Animus, and Self, each emphasizing different human experiences and psychological aspects which need to be integrated for achieving wholeness. The discussion covers concepts such as the puer aeternus and sage archetypes that illustrate toys with youth and wisdom found in human narratives.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
The video reflects on the tension and evolution of Jung's theories versus Freud's, emphasizing Jung's broader approach that includes spirituality and meaning, leading to the development of analytical psychology. This divergence laid the foundation for self-discovery, guiding individuals toward integrating repressed parts of themselves.
- 00:25:00 - 00:33:58
Finally, criticisms of Jung's theories are presented, focusing on the challenges of applying his often abstract concepts in practical psychological settings while also recognizing his enduring influence in contemporary psychology, film, and literature. Jung's emphasis on individuation and the exploration of the unconscious mind resonate with today's quest for personal meaning and authenticity.

- 00:01:01throughout history likely encountered
- 00:01:02this dilemma as they dug deeper into the
- 00:01:04human psyche a man who wasn't spared
- 00:01:06from that fate is Carl Young a swis
- 00:01:09psychiatrist and
- 00:01:10psychoanalyst young is pretty well known
- 00:01:13as a Pioneer in his Fields particularly
- 00:01:15because he did a lot more than study the
- 00:01:17mind he mapped it out like an Explorer
- 00:01:19charting unknown territories his work
- 00:01:21laid the foundation for some of the
- 00:01:23biggest ideas and technology today from
- 00:01:25personality types to Concepts like the
- 00:01:27inner child at least that's how
- 00:01:29textbooks describe him however he wasn't
- 00:01:31some Sage who found understanding after
- 00:01:33a week of meditation to understand why
- 00:01:36he was able to provide reliable insights
- 00:01:37for many people it's best to take a peek
- 00:01:40into the life that led him down a road
- 00:01:41that he paved with his own hands and
- 00:01:43perhaps extra hands some of you may be
- 00:01:45familiar with to help guide us through
- 00:01:48this journey I've brought along my
- 00:01:50friend Noah who will take it over from
- 00:01:52here young was born in 1875 in keswell
- 00:01:56Switzerland the son of a pastor young
- 00:01:59respected his father father but found
- 00:02:00that his rigid religious beliefs were
- 00:02:02too confining to follow into adulthood
- 00:02:05this was the first clash between
- 00:02:07spiritualism and skepticism planting
- 00:02:09seeds that would allow him to genuinely
- 00:02:12explore his eventual fascination with
- 00:02:14the unconscious
- 00:02:15mind young spent a lot of time alone as
- 00:02:18a kid often daydreaming and reflecting
- 00:02:21on his own thoughts he later described
- 00:02:23this period as his first ever encounter
- 00:02:26with the unconscious a theme that would
- 00:02:28go on to dominate his life's work
- 00:02:31originally pursuing medicine young had
- 00:02:34no inclination towards Clinical
- 00:02:35Psychology but an interest in mental
- 00:02:37illness led him to Psychiatry how this
- 00:02:40sprung up is
- 00:02:42fascinating at some point in his mid-30s
- 00:02:45Carl Young experienced what he described
- 00:02:47as a horrible confrontation with the
- 00:02:49unconscious one where he saw visions and
- 00:02:52heard voices it got to the point where
- 00:02:55he even began to worry that he was
- 00:02:57menaced by a psychosis or doing a
- 00:03:00schizophrenia it makes you wonder if his
- 00:03:02knowledge of mental illness wasn't
- 00:03:04Advanced would he have had the chance to
- 00:03:06emerge from this confrontation or would
- 00:03:09he have succumbed as another nameless
- 00:03:11victim of his time thankfully we got the
- 00:03:13former due to these events in 1900 young
- 00:03:17decided to transition into working at
- 00:03:19the Burk Holley Psychiatric Hospital in
- 00:03:21zurk it was here that he began studying
- 00:03:24patients with
- 00:03:25schizophrenia this location was also his
- 00:03:28first encounter with Sigman Freud's work
- 00:03:30soon after looking into Freud's ideas he
- 00:03:32made contact with him and the two began
- 00:03:35exchanging letters quickly the pair
- 00:03:37gained a friendly and intellectually
- 00:03:39stimulating
- 00:03:41relationship they would often engage in
- 00:03:43strong debates on Freud's work and over
- 00:03:46time young Rose through the ranks of
- 00:03:48psychoanalysis and became Freud's
- 00:03:50Protegé he evolved into the man that
- 00:03:52Freud believed was fit to carry on his
- 00:03:54legacy
- 00:04:01but young didn't stop at Freud's
- 00:04:02theories he expanded on them sometimes
- 00:04:05in radical ways while Freud was fixated
- 00:04:08on repressed sexual desires and the
- 00:04:10influence of childhood on individuals
- 00:04:12young believed that the human mind was
- 00:04:14more than a fleshy storage unit for past
- 00:04:17traumas he envisioned the psyche as a
- 00:04:20self-regulating system that strives to
- 00:04:22maintain balance and develop itself he
- 00:04:25also believed that it consists of three
- 00:04:28layers the ego
- 00:04:30this is the conscious mind or the part
- 00:04:32of us that interacts with our world it's
- 00:04:35your sense of self it's the voice that
- 00:04:37you hear when you're thinking like for
- 00:04:39example right now you aware that you're
- 00:04:41watching this video and that voice in
- 00:04:43your head is telling you this the
- 00:04:46personal
- 00:04:47unconscious this is sort of like a
- 00:04:49personal storage unit for forgotten
- 00:04:51memories and suppressed emotions it's
- 00:04:54highly unique to each person and finally
- 00:04:57the collective unconscious now this is
- 00:04:59where young really broke new ground in
- 00:05:01Psychology this concept is one that is
- 00:05:04centered on a new approach one where the
- 00:05:07personal unconscious is the product of a
- 00:05:09deep Universal layer of unconscious that
- 00:05:12all humans
- 00:05:13share this Collective unconscious is
- 00:05:16filled with the archetypes that can be
- 00:05:17found among people in other words Primal
- 00:05:21symbols and motifs that appear in myths
- 00:05:23dreams and stories across cultures that
- 00:05:26have never made contact with each other
- 00:05:28for example you'll find some variation
- 00:05:31of dragons as a myth in cultures located
- 00:05:34vast oceans away from each other that's
- 00:05:36an archetype however for young these
- 00:05:39archetypes help to better Define human
- 00:05:42[Music]
- 00:05:46behavior among the many archetypes that
- 00:05:49Carl Young defined there were four that
- 00:05:51he identified as the most influential on
- 00:05:54human
- 00:05:55behavior the Persona the mask that we
- 00:05:58wear in public
- 00:06:00it's the virsion of ourselves that we
- 00:06:02present to the world one that's shaped
- 00:06:04by societal expectations the Shadow the
- 00:06:08part of ourselves that we deny reject or
- 00:06:11hide it's the thing that is behind our
- 00:06:13repressed desires and impulses like the
- 00:06:16culmination of everything that we would
- 00:06:18never admit that we
- 00:06:20are Ana or animus the inner feminine
- 00:06:24side within men is the anima while the
- 00:06:26masculine side within women is the
- 00:06:28Animus
- 00:06:30to Young integrating either aspects as
- 00:06:33they apply to genders could lead to a
- 00:06:35better psychological balance the self
- 00:06:38this is the ultimate goal of yian
- 00:06:41psychology the self is what represents a
- 00:06:44union between the conscious and
- 00:06:45unconscious mind creating wholeness and
- 00:06:50[Music]
- 00:06:53individuation but before we look further
- 00:06:55into that let's take a peek at some of
- 00:06:57the interesting archetypes proposed by
- 00:06:59young while those four are the most
- 00:07:02well-known there are others worth
- 00:07:03learning about as you dig deeper into
- 00:07:05yian
- 00:07:06philosophy an archetype that might
- 00:07:09quickly grab your attention is the puer
- 00:07:11aternos or Eternal child this archetype
- 00:07:14reflects a person that resists growing
- 00:07:17up much like the fictional character
- 00:07:19Peter
- 00:07:20Pan in fact some psychologists actually
- 00:07:23refer to it as Peter Pan
- 00:07:25syndrome you most likely know a Peter
- 00:07:28Pan in your life the person who peaked
- 00:07:30in high school and can't seem to let the
- 00:07:32past go they avoid responsibility and
- 00:07:35are stuck in a rebellious teen phase
- 00:07:38while these people can Inspire wonder
- 00:07:40and creativity if left unchecked they
- 00:07:43can become stuck in a loop of escapism
- 00:07:47often lost in a fantasy version of who
- 00:07:49they are unable to put in the work that
- 00:07:52it takes to make their ideas a reality
- 00:07:55if you can relate to this recognizing
- 00:07:57the traits of this archetype can be the
- 00:07:59first step towards personal growth
- 00:08:02another intriguing but less popular
- 00:08:04archetype is the senx or Wise Old Man
- 00:08:07one that serves as a symbol of wisdom
- 00:08:09and
- 00:08:10guidance you'll often find these figures
- 00:08:13in dreams or stories as mentors like for
- 00:08:16example Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original
- 00:08:18Star Wars Trilogy this archetype can
- 00:08:20help individuals find direction during
- 00:08:23periods of tough time or
- 00:08:27uncertainty despite finding a tight-knit
- 00:08:30friendship the nature of their Works
- 00:08:32mixed with individual Brilliance meant
- 00:08:34that there would be disagreements
- 00:08:36between young and Freud but it wasn't
- 00:08:38just because of professional
- 00:08:40disagreements that they grew apart it
- 00:08:42was tied to how Freud believed that
- 00:08:44sexual desires were the Primal driver
- 00:08:46for human behavior but young thought
- 00:08:49that this was far too narrow maintaining
- 00:08:51that the idea could go further than that
- 00:08:53young argued that myths spirituality and
- 00:08:56a person sech for meaning played just as
- 00:08:58important a role in shaping the human
- 00:09:01psyche these ideological differences
- 00:09:04became a rift that never fully
- 00:09:06healed with some hard lines drawn it was
- 00:09:09clear that Young's departure from
- 00:09:11Freud's Circle was much bigger than a
- 00:09:13personal matter it was more like a split
- 00:09:16between the field of psychology itself
- 00:09:19Freud's Legacy would eventually evolve
- 00:09:22into
- 00:09:23psychoanalysis meanwhile young carved
- 00:09:25out a completely new path called
- 00:09:27analytical psychology
- 00:09:29this approach was quite broad
- 00:09:31emphasizing the importance of personal
- 00:09:33growth symbol interpretation and the
- 00:09:35internal Journey towards
- 00:09:37self-discovery understanding who young
- 00:09:39was and how he developed his theories is
- 00:09:42helpful when looking deeper into the
- 00:09:44concepts will explore later in this
- 00:09:46video from Shadow work to
- 00:09:49individuation the Swiss psychologist's
- 00:09:52ideas offer a road map for anyone
- 00:09:54seeking to understand themselves better
- 00:09:57but his theories weren't Flawless ideas
- 00:09:59accepted by all
- 00:10:01psychologists toward the end of this
- 00:10:03episode we'll take a look at the
- 00:10:05resistance that young faced especially
- 00:10:07from prian circles for now though let's
- 00:10:10take a leap of faith into the shadow
- 00:10:12where the hidden parts of ourselves
- 00:10:14await in Hope and
- 00:10:17misery you're at a party when you meet a
- 00:10:20loud attention-seeking person who wants
- 00:10:23to start a dance circle you've always
- 00:10:25disliked when people try to make
- 00:10:27themselves the main character out in
- 00:10:28public you're not quite sure when it
- 00:10:30started in some ways you feel like
- 00:10:33you've always been this way you roll
- 00:10:35your eyes thinking I could never be like
- 00:10:37that but what if that reaction wasn't a
- 00:10:39simple bit of annoyance what if it was a
- 00:10:42reflection of something hidden and
- 00:10:43buried deep inside you this discomfort
- 00:10:46you may start to feel is a doorway into
- 00:10:48one of Carl Young's most compelling
- 00:10:50ideas the shadow one of the four core
- 00:10:54archetypes young described the shadow as
- 00:10:56a part of our psyche where we stuff away
- 00:10:58tra emotions and desires that we find
- 00:11:01incompatible with who we think we are
- 00:11:04it's kind of a psychological junk drawer
- 00:11:06that holds parts of ourselves that we'd
- 00:11:09rather not acknowledge you know that's
- 00:11:11stuff that you never want to see
- 00:11:12yourself as jealous greedy or spiteful
- 00:11:16but out of sight doesn't always mean out
- 00:11:18of mind the shadow has ways of sneaking
- 00:11:21into our lives such as showing up in
- 00:11:24projections like the moment that you see
- 00:11:26that person at a party and for a brief
- 00:11:28moment you see your repressed qualities
- 00:11:30in other people a mother scolds her
- 00:11:32daughter for being outspoken confident
- 00:11:35and friendly with people on the surface
- 00:11:37it might look like this mom is just a
- 00:11:39mean and harsh person but the shadow
- 00:11:41tells a different story the mother could
- 00:11:44have been much like her daughter early
- 00:11:45on in life but that changed when she
- 00:11:47faced rejection for being too much
- 00:11:50growing up in a small town where tall
- 00:11:52poppy syndrome was a thing a term used
- 00:11:54to describe bringing down successful
- 00:11:56individuals who stand out she lost a job
- 00:11:58for for outshining her boss and her
- 00:12:01friends abandoned her for being a pikney
- 00:12:03because she was outspoken with such
- 00:12:05experience in her youth the mother
- 00:12:07buried those parts of herself learning
- 00:12:09to Value quiet humility
- 00:12:12instead now seeing her daughter embody
- 00:12:15that same boldness stirs uncomfortable
- 00:12:17emotions and instead of confronting the
- 00:12:19shadow she lashes out unbeknownst to her
- 00:12:23it's not her daughter's Behavior she
- 00:12:25despises but the Echoes of her younger
- 00:12:27self a person she works so hard to
- 00:12:31repress the greatest tragedy of the
- 00:12:33family is the unlived lives of the
- 00:12:35parents Carl
- 00:12:38Young this is how the shadow dances in
- 00:12:41our lives slipping through generations
- 00:12:44and relationships it's a strong reminder
- 00:12:47that our judgments often reflect inner
- 00:12:49wounds not objective
- 00:12:51truths once we recognize these Dynamics
- 00:12:54in our relationships empathy can quickly
- 00:12:57replace frustration the mother's
- 00:12:59scolding is more than a harsh reaction
- 00:13:02it's an invitation to heal by
- 00:13:04acknowledging the hidden parts of
- 00:13:05ourselves we soften our edges and inch
- 00:13:08closer to self-acceptance but what do we
- 00:13:11do once we encounter the shadow to Young
- 00:13:14confronting this part of ourselves could
- 00:13:16unlock growth and more self-awareness
- 00:13:19this process is known as Shadow
- 00:13:21[Music]
- 00:13:23work Shadow work isn't a fancy term to
- 00:13:26lucid dream your way into defeating your
- 00:13:28inner demons as cool as that sounds
- 00:13:31instead it's a bit like befriending the
- 00:13:33monster under your
- 00:13:35bed by facing the parts of us that have
- 00:13:37only known Darkness for so long we
- 00:13:40reduce their hold on us and reclaim the
- 00:13:42energy we once spent suppressing them in
- 00:13:45practice it looks like this journaling
- 00:13:48about moments where you had strong
- 00:13:50emotional reactions asking yourself what
- 00:13:53part of me is the situation reflecting
- 00:13:55or working with a therapist trained in
- 00:13:57yian analysis
- 00:13:59yes you can engage with professionally
- 00:14:01trained therapists on this topic modern
- 00:14:04psychology has embraced Shadow work as a
- 00:14:06tool for healing and you'll often find
- 00:14:09therapists who guide patients in
- 00:14:10exploring unresolved childhood
- 00:14:12experiences or repeated patterns in
- 00:14:15relationships helping Trace these
- 00:14:17patterns back to unacknowledged parts of
- 00:14:19their psyche even outside of a
- 00:14:21therapist's office people tend to use
- 00:14:23Shadow work as a form of personal growth
- 00:14:26exploring guided meditations
- 00:14:28self-reflection exercises and even dream
- 00:14:30analysis all to engage with their inner
- 00:14:33self at its core the concept of Shadow
- 00:14:36reminds us that growth isn't about
- 00:14:38becoming a new person contrary to the
- 00:14:40popular advice about Reinventing
- 00:14:42yourself Shadow work encourages us to
- 00:14:45move closer to wholeness by embracing
- 00:14:47the light and dark sides within
- 00:14:53us do you ever walk into a crowded room
- 00:14:56filled with conversation and laughter
- 00:14:58yet you feel like a ghost you're present
- 00:15:01but unseen it's like everyone else is
- 00:15:03plugged into something greater and
- 00:15:05you're not instead you stand apart
- 00:15:08disconnected this peculiar loneliness
- 00:15:11this sensation where you're surrounded
- 00:15:13but unknown is one that points to
- 00:15:15something much deeper than mere
- 00:15:17isolation to Carl Young it reveals a
- 00:15:20fragmented self longing for integration
- 00:15:23the antidote to this individuation now
- 00:15:26individuation sounds like a fancy word
- 00:15:28to justify
- 00:15:30self-isolation if you listen closely
- 00:15:32though it might just help you discover
- 00:15:34ways for you to be your most authentic
- 00:15:36self among others in many ways
- 00:15:39individuation is a lifelong process of
- 00:15:41becoming your true self it's the process
- 00:15:44that people go through as they achieve a
- 00:15:46distinct and stable personality it's not
- 00:15:50really about self-improvement at least
- 00:15:52not in the conventional sense with
- 00:15:54individuation you're not adopting new
- 00:15:56habits or polishing aspects of your s
- 00:15:59that you consider weak instead it
- 00:16:02centers on uncovering and integrating
- 00:16:05the most disparate parts of yourself you
- 00:16:08know the thing in you that sees
- 00:16:10something and makes you automatically
- 00:16:11think I'd never do that in a million
- 00:16:15years the ego the Shadow the anima SL
- 00:16:19animus and the self are all integral to
- 00:16:21this delicate dance
- 00:16:23within once these elements are aligned
- 00:16:26we are able to step a little closer to
- 00:16:28hold wholeness however if they are
- 00:16:30rejected or ignored we drift further
- 00:16:33away from our
- 00:16:34Essence this amplifies feelings of
- 00:16:37alienation and the worst part about that
- 00:16:39is constantly trying to fill the hole
- 00:16:41with things that will never truly fix
- 00:16:43you individuation isn't a one-size
- 00:16:46fits-all solution but with it you stand
- 00:16:49a chance to handle your inner turmoil
- 00:16:52with strengths you haven't truly
- 00:16:54realized are there loneliness is often a
- 00:16:57signal that this inner work is being
- 00:17:00neglected because of that we attempt to
- 00:17:02fill this void externally by seeking
- 00:17:04attention admiration and validation we
- 00:17:07start to hold on to the hope that if
- 00:17:09others notice us maybe the ache inside
- 00:17:12will subside social media doesn't help
- 00:17:15with this tendency either encouraging
- 00:17:17main character energy where one's life
- 00:17:19is curated for an audience we slowly
- 00:17:22become performers in our own stories
- 00:17:24desperate for validation and Applause
- 00:17:27yet young argues that this Pursuit is
- 00:17:30hollow how is this possible for one
- 00:17:33individuation teaches that fulfillment
- 00:17:35doesn't come from being seen but from
- 00:17:37seeing ourselves and others with Clarity
- 00:17:40mix that with a healthy dose of
- 00:17:42compassion and things start to make a
- 00:17:44lot more
- 00:17:45sense let's use this example you scroll
- 00:17:48through your Instagram feed occasionally
- 00:17:50pausing when you're looking at a
- 00:17:52perfectly curated life of an
- 00:17:53acquaintance as you stare intensely at
- 00:17:55their photos you feel a twinge of Envy
- 00:17:58arising rather than dismissing This
- 00:18:00Bitter emotion in embarrassment consider
- 00:18:03this moment as an invitation to
- 00:18:05experience individuation what could be
- 00:18:07the unmet desire or repressed quality
- 00:18:10that this Envy highlights do you envy
- 00:18:13their holiday photos because you're
- 00:18:15secretly longing for adventure do you
- 00:18:18talk down about them returning to their
- 00:18:20EX for the third time because you're
- 00:18:21secretly scared nobody loves you enough
- 00:18:23to want to keep trying do you have
- 00:18:26secondhand embarrassment for their weird
- 00:18:28Tik Tok videos because you've had to
- 00:18:29keep up an appearance of being put
- 00:18:31together all it comes down to is the
- 00:18:34parts of yourself that have gone
- 00:18:36unnoticed individuation asks you to sit
- 00:18:39with these feelings in totality no
- 00:18:41judgment just you looking in the mirror
- 00:18:44and unraveling the messages held within
- 00:18:46your
- 00:18:47discomfort this process of turning
- 00:18:49inward is what helps cultivate a richer
- 00:18:52connection to the self in a paradoxical
- 00:18:55way it also lessens loneliness as we
- 00:18:58engage in deep self-reflection we grow
- 00:19:01and become better equipped to engage
- 00:19:03with the world authentically slowly the
- 00:19:06need for external validation Fades and
- 00:19:08it's replaced by a cool quiet confidence
- 00:19:12one that is entirely rooted in
- 00:19:14self-awareness a practical approach to
- 00:19:16individuation and by extension combating
- 00:19:19loneliness involves shifting our Focus
- 00:19:22outward now sure this may seem
- 00:19:25counterintuitive but by noticing others
- 00:19:27constantly striving to be no noticed we
- 00:19:29dissolve the barriers that isolate us so
- 00:19:32the next time you're outside instead of
- 00:19:34thinking about how depressing it is that
- 00:19:35you don't have many friends try
- 00:19:37something new living outside of your own
- 00:19:40head consider striking up a genuine
- 00:19:43conversation with someone who often
- 00:19:45Fades into the background the types of
- 00:19:47people that you think of as NPCs a
- 00:19:50delivery guy or a shop owner nothing too
- 00:19:53crazy just a little bit of human
- 00:19:55connection pay attention to the
- 00:19:57unnoticed details of their Story by
- 00:19:59building a habit out of a simple act you
- 00:20:02can experience some transformative
- 00:20:04changes in your own life as you learn to
- 00:20:07see others deeply we mirror that same
- 00:20:10sort of attention inwards fostering the
- 00:20:12same recognition within
- 00:20:14ourselves it all starts to make sense
- 00:20:16once you draw it out in your own head if
- 00:20:19there are parts of you that aren't ever
- 00:20:21seen as relevant within your own self
- 00:20:24you're likely using a similar level of
- 00:20:26harshness in how you judge other people
- 00:20:28to some
- 00:20:29extent young believed that Solitude was
- 00:20:32an essential ingredient in individuation
- 00:20:35but it's not the loneliness that happens
- 00:20:37when you're disconnected from the world
- 00:20:38around you instead it's the Solitude
- 00:20:41that exists when you're in tune with the
- 00:20:43unconscious Mind through constant
- 00:20:45practices like meditation journaling and
- 00:20:48creative expression we're able to engage
- 00:20:50with the hidden parts of our psyche
- 00:20:52allowing the unconscious mind to finally
- 00:20:55speak these solitary moments are what
- 00:20:57weave together the fractured aspects of
- 00:21:00the self drawing us ever closer to
- 00:21:02psychological
- 00:21:03wholeness to begin this journey here are
- 00:21:06some practical steps worth looking into
- 00:21:09engaging in Creative Outlets creativity
- 00:21:12is often overlooked in the journey
- 00:21:14towards self-improvement but being
- 00:21:16familiar with who you are and how your
- 00:21:19mind prefers to express itself is
- 00:21:21crucial art music and writing are the
- 00:21:24source of things that bypass our ego's
- 00:21:27defenses allowing hidden aspects of
- 00:21:29ourselves to surface forget about
- 00:21:32producing a masterpiece instead create
- 00:21:34for the sake of exploration it's the
- 00:21:37journey or process itself where the True
- 00:21:39Value lies therapeutic
- 00:21:42exploration yian analysis or other depth
- 00:21:45oriented therapies are strong sources
- 00:21:47for a sense of structure towards
- 00:21:50individuation a trained therapist can
- 00:21:52guide you in steps like engaging with
- 00:21:54the shadow uncovering projections you've
- 00:21:56held towards other people and
- 00:21:58integrating unconscious
- 00:22:00material practicing mindfulness when
- 00:22:04you're able to carve out moments of
- 00:22:06Stillness every day it'll go a long way
- 00:22:08in getting you comfortable with being
- 00:22:10yourself it also allows you to reflect
- 00:22:13on emotional triggers recurring
- 00:22:15conflicts or intense
- 00:22:17reactions asking yourself what part of
- 00:22:19me is being activated here is a helpful
- 00:22:22way to unlock some profound insights
- 00:22:25building authentic connections
- 00:22:27individuation thrives in a relationship
- 00:22:30this goes beyond the Romantic side of
- 00:22:31things and into communities or
- 00:22:33friendships where vulnerability is
- 00:22:36encouraged by sharing your inner world
- 00:22:38with others you can accelerate
- 00:22:40individuation revealing hidden strengths
- 00:22:42and blind spots within journaling
- 00:22:45emotions and dreams dreams are seen as
- 00:22:47the language of the unconscious they
- 00:22:50offer clues about neglected parts of our
- 00:22:52psyche when you keep a journal by your
- 00:22:54bed and quickly write down your dreams
- 00:22:56upon waking you'll gain some cool
- 00:22:58insights over time symbols and patterns
- 00:23:01start to emerge pointing to areas of
- 00:23:03yourself in need of integration instead
- 00:23:05of viewing life as some sort of
- 00:23:07performance you start to fully inhabit
- 00:23:09it the loneliness Fades not because the
- 00:23:12external World shifts but because you're
- 00:23:14able to deepen a relationship with
- 00:23:16yourself you start to recognize that the
- 00:23:18connections you seek outwardly are at
- 00:23:21their core a reflection of the
- 00:23:22connections that you've cultivated
- 00:23:24within Young's perspective on
- 00:23:26individuation isn't some far-fetched Ed
- 00:23:28ideal meant for philosophers or Mystics
- 00:23:31it's for the everyday person a practical
- 00:23:34path laid bare for anyone willing to
- 00:23:36engage with their inner landscape while
- 00:23:39the journey is sure to be solitary at
- 00:23:40times it leads us back to the collective
- 00:23:43making us more connected whole and a lot
- 00:23:46more at peace with who we really
- 00:23:49[Music]
- 00:23:52are although Carl Young has proven
- 00:23:54himself to be a helpful voice in the
- 00:23:56field of Psychology today his influence
- 00:23:59hasn't been met without a healthy amount
- 00:24:01of
- 00:24:02skepticism Concepts like the shadow
- 00:24:04archetypes and the collective
- 00:24:06unconscious have helped to shape
- 00:24:07Psychotherapy pop culture and
- 00:24:10literature yet critics have had one
- 00:24:12specific issue with the
- 00:24:14philosophy and the issue in question is
- 00:24:17the metaphysical nature of Young's
- 00:24:19theories to put it simply there are a
- 00:24:21lot of people who feel that Young's work
- 00:24:23can't really be tested with science or
- 00:24:26put in Practical terms if we truly want
- 00:24:28to fully appreciate this iconic
- 00:24:30philosopher's work it's essential to
- 00:24:32explore his strongest criticisms and the
- 00:24:35debates they've ignited within
- 00:24:36psychology as a
- 00:24:40[Music]
- 00:24:43whole it's well established that young
- 00:24:45was seen as Freud's Protegé and
- 00:24:48potential
- 00:24:49successor both agreed on a lot
- 00:24:51especially in their interests in the
- 00:24:53unconscious mind as we noted earlier
- 00:24:55their philosophical paths eventually
- 00:24:57diverged and this led them to some
- 00:25:00significant theoretical clashes Freud
- 00:25:02who is known for a psychoanalytical
- 00:25:04framework emphasized the importance of
- 00:25:06sexual drives and repressed desires as
- 00:25:09the primary forces that shape human
- 00:25:11behavior creating a model of the psyche
- 00:25:14he believed that our Behavior revolved
- 00:25:16around the id ego and super ego painting
- 00:25:19an image of humanity that's largely
- 00:25:21driven by our early childhood
- 00:25:23experiences for young he proposed a
- 00:25:26broader more spiritual View of the
- 00:25:28unconscious instead of focusing solely
- 00:25:31on the personal feelings of repression
- 00:25:34he introduced the collective unconscious
- 00:25:36as an idea using it as a collection of
- 00:25:39shared archetypes and symbols that our
- 00:25:41species inherited from our ancients
- 00:25:44critics believed that Young's departure
- 00:25:46from Freud's beliefs pushed him in a
- 00:25:48direction that was much more imaginative
- 00:25:50than his old friend however it also
- 00:25:53lacked the empirical foundations that
- 00:25:55were emphasized and maintained by Freud
- 00:25:59by choosing to focus on symbols myths
- 00:26:01and dreams yian psychology felt too out
- 00:26:04there and some considered it to be in
- 00:26:06speculative
- 00:26:08[Music]
- 00:26:10territory now the biggest part of Yin
- 00:26:13philosophy that raises eyebrows is his
- 00:26:15mysticism this is a person who was never
- 00:26:18one to shy away from astrology Alchemy
- 00:26:21or religious symbolism young was ready
- 00:26:24to explore the human psyche in ways that
- 00:26:26had never been done before
- 00:26:28this further cemented his reputation as
- 00:26:31a thinker who constantly straddled the
- 00:26:33line between metaphysics and
- 00:26:35psychology some interesting things about
- 00:26:38young include his belief in
- 00:26:40synchronicity the idea that coincidences
- 00:26:43always have a meaningful connection he
- 00:26:45also used tarot cards and an iching an
- 00:26:48ancient Chinese text that functions
- 00:26:50similarly to
- 00:26:51tarot these resources helped young
- 00:26:54better understand the psyche but he also
- 00:26:56Drew sharp criticism from numerous
- 00:26:58numerous contemporary psychologists who
- 00:27:00prefer to be more grounded in Empirical
- 00:27:03research some argue that Young's Embrace
- 00:27:06of mysticism tends to detract from his
- 00:27:08work's credibility modern psychology is
- 00:27:11something that prioritizes constant
- 00:27:13results that are repeatable with tests
- 00:27:15and data driven methods meanwhile with
- 00:27:17Yin analysis there's a lot of emphasis
- 00:27:20on subjective experience which means
- 00:27:22that it struggles to meet the criteria
- 00:27:24set out by modern standards there are
- 00:27:27critics like Like Richard null an
- 00:27:29award-winning author known for the young
- 00:27:31cult the origins of a charismatic
- 00:27:32movement who believe that Young's
- 00:27:34approach is a quasi spiritual movement
- 00:27:37rather than a scientific discipline even
- 00:27:39going further to claim that Young's
- 00:27:41approach is similar to that of a
- 00:27:43religious leader not a
- 00:27:45psychologist this mystical quality which
- 00:27:48is often the subject of criticism for
- 00:27:50young is also what makes him so
- 00:27:52appealing the innate willingness to
- 00:27:54engage with the unknown and explore the
- 00:27:56mind is something that resonates with
- 00:27:58certain types of people you know the
- 00:28:00sort of people who seek meaning beyond
- 00:28:02the confines of materialism for many
- 00:28:05yian psychology is what offers a bridge
- 00:28:08between science and spirituality IT
- 00:28:10addresses questions of purpose
- 00:28:12transformation and identity the things
- 00:28:15that psychological models tend to
- 00:28:17[Music]
- 00:28:22overlook another common critic of Carl
- 00:28:25Young's work lies in the complexity it
- 00:28:27brings things yet there aren't many
- 00:28:29practical ways to apply them when you
- 00:28:32take a look at Concepts like Thea and
- 00:28:34animus individuation and the shadow
- 00:28:37there's this abstract way that they are
- 00:28:39described this makes it difficult for
- 00:28:41the average person to implement in their
- 00:28:43daily life or fully grasp unlike
- 00:28:46something along the lines of cognitive
- 00:28:48behavioral therapy which is a form of
- 00:28:50treatment that uses clear structured
- 00:28:52techniques when addressing mental health
- 00:28:54issues in youngi analysis things tend to
- 00:28:57feel slow moving or for a niche
- 00:29:00audience with individuation there's a
- 00:29:03strong belief that it's an essential
- 00:29:05element for psychological growth yet it
- 00:29:07lacks any clear or actionable steps
- 00:29:10critics argue that without any concrete
- 00:29:12methods Yan therapy is really just a
- 00:29:15type of introspective exercise that
- 00:29:17yields basically no tangible progress in
- 00:29:20clinical settings this ambiguity can get
- 00:29:22frustrating for patients seeking
- 00:29:24immediate relief from their
- 00:29:26psychological distress
- 00:29:29[Music]
- 00:29:33in the 21st century you'll notice that
- 00:29:36Yi psychology has evolved quite a lot
- 00:29:39some practitioners have attempted to
- 00:29:41ground some of Carl's ideas into
- 00:29:42contemporary research Neuroscience is a
- 00:29:45field that has started to show interest
- 00:29:47in the role of the unconscious
- 00:29:50particularly in the ideas like the
- 00:29:51unconscious mind and its role in
- 00:29:53influencing patterns of behavior this
- 00:29:56heavily Echoes Young's notion of
- 00:29:58archetypes yet we also have some Modern
- 00:30:01psychologists like Jordan Peterson who
- 00:30:03draws heavily from yian ideas in his
- 00:30:05writings and lectures he also has faced
- 00:30:08a lot of criticism for oversimplifying
- 00:30:11or misrepresenting Young's more nuanced
- 00:30:13theories Peterson's take on Concepts
- 00:30:16like the shadow has introduced young to
- 00:30:18wider audiences but it has also sparked
- 00:30:21a debate on whether or not these
- 00:30:23simplifications dilute the richness of
- 00:30:25Young's original work one thing Yi and
- 00:30:28psychologists can't seem to shake away
- 00:30:30from is this portrayal of the anima and
- 00:30:32animus arguments are often made about
- 00:30:35the description of these inner figures
- 00:30:37as they tend to reinforce gender
- 00:30:39stereotypes on one side femininity is
- 00:30:42seen as emotional and passive while
- 00:30:44masculinity is represented as strength
- 00:30:47and
- 00:30:47logic while yian analysts Point towards
- 00:30:50the fluid and constantly evolving nature
- 00:30:53of these archetypes critics argue that
- 00:30:55such Frameworks actually risk promoting
- 00:30:58dated Notions of gender
- 00:31:00[Music]
- 00:31:03roles despite the strong criticisms
- 00:31:06Young's work continues to prove valuable
- 00:31:08his theories invite exploration into the
- 00:31:10inner World in ways that extend beyond
- 00:31:13diagnosing symptoms instead of feeling
- 00:31:15like a checklist Yi in Psychology
- 00:31:17encourages a holistic approach to mental
- 00:31:19health although some of his ideas can't
- 00:31:22withstand scientific scrutiny they still
- 00:31:24offer tools for self-discovery and
- 00:31:26artistic inspiration
