Demons in Ancient Mesopotamia
Summary

- 00:15:00 - 00:24:45

Pengantar MPKT UI -- Prof. DR. Ir. Raldi Artono
- 00:00:01the world of the ancient Mesopotamians
- 00:00:04was one that was filled with various
- 00:00:06invisible and supernatural creatures
- 00:00:09some of which were good but others that
- 00:00:13were definitely evil there were Gods
- 00:00:17ghosts witches and demons all of whom
- 00:00:21were seen as a natural part of everyday
- 00:00:24life in this region in ancient times
- 00:00:27indeed the existence of demons was
- 00:00:30basically taken for granted by the
- 00:00:32mesopotamus and there was never a
- 00:00:33question whether or not they existed but
- 00:00:36rather what should be done if you
- 00:00:39actually encountered one in fact there
- 00:00:41was quite a complex and developed
- 00:00:43demonology in this ancient civilization
- 00:00:46one that involved theories regarding the
- 00:00:49personalities of different demons how to
- 00:00:53interact with them and of course how to
- 00:00:55get rid of those that were causing
- 00:00:57trouble or malady so for this year's
- 00:01:01shocktober we're going to dive into the
- 00:01:04fascinating world of demons and ghosts
- 00:01:07and evil well supernatural creatures in
- 00:01:10ancient Mesopotamia

- 00:01:25I am very excited to say that this is a
- 00:01:28big collaboration between four different
- 00:01:31creators here on YouTube I am working
- 00:01:34together with my friends Dr Justin
- 00:01:36Sledge from the channel esoterica Dr
- 00:01:39Angela Pucca from Angela's Symposium and
- 00:01:43Dr Dan atrell from the channel the
- 00:01:46modern hermeticist we will all be making
- 00:01:49videos and releasing them today on some
- 00:01:52related topics in terms of occultism I
- 00:01:55guess but also things like spirits and
- 00:01:57exorcisms I will tell you more about
- 00:02:00this collaboration at the end of the
- 00:02:01video but it is truly a blessing and
- 00:02:04such a privilege to be working with such
- 00:02:06amazing people that inspire me go check
- 00:02:09out their channels they're all amazing
- 00:02:11if you haven't already and and check out
- 00:02:13their videos which are going to be so so
- 00:02:15interesting
- 00:02:17now even though there were certainly
- 00:02:18many demons in ancient Mesopotamia it's
- 00:02:21important to remember that the modern
- 00:02:23idea of demon doesn't really correspond
- 00:02:26to the way that the Ancients conceived
- 00:02:28of these beings the idea of demons as an
- 00:02:31exclusively evil creature associated
- 00:02:33with the devil that is out to hurt or
- 00:02:35possess humans is one that very much
- 00:02:38develops with the writers of early
- 00:02:40Christianity
- 00:02:41ancient people in pre-christian times
- 00:02:43had a rather different conception of
- 00:02:46demons the word itself demon comes from
- 00:02:49the Greek term diamond and a diamond in
- 00:02:52ancient Greece was a much more
- 00:02:54ambivalent creature basically a diamond
- 00:02:56was a spiritual being that stood in
- 00:02:58between the gods and humans the gods
- 00:03:02were of course the highest beings in
- 00:03:04existence and US humans are lower
- 00:03:06physical creatures and in ancient
- 00:03:08writers such as Plato the diamonds fit
- 00:03:10right in between They Are Spiritual
- 00:03:13Beings that are more powerful than
- 00:03:15humans but not quite Gods as such they
- 00:03:18often acted as intermediaries between
- 00:03:21the two Realms and could serve as
- 00:03:23positive inspiration or as cause for
- 00:03:26trouble
- 00:03:27diamonds were neither good nor evil they
- 00:03:30were both good diamonds and evil
- 00:03:32diamonds so while the idea of evil
- 00:03:34diamonds did technically exist there was
- 00:03:37only one category of this elusive being
- 00:03:39and with us have a slightly more complex
- 00:03:41perspective here the situation in
- 00:03:44ancient Mesopotamia was basically the
- 00:03:46same demons could be both good or evil
- 00:03:49with different personalities it's not
- 00:03:52that any given demon was either good or
- 00:03:54bad definitively but they could do good
- 00:03:56or evil things their nature wasn't set
- 00:03:59in stone but had personalities and
- 00:04:01emotions just like other creatures
- 00:04:04obviously the mesopotamus didn't use the
- 00:04:06Greek word Diamond especially not in
- 00:04:09pre-hellenic times instead the Sumerian
- 00:04:11word udog or the equivalent Acadian
- 00:04:13utoku was used to refer roughly to our
- 00:04:16concept of demon today or rather the
- 00:04:19ancient Greek concept of demons as long
- 00:04:21as we understand that translating it as
- 00:04:23demon is a compromise and that we should
- 00:04:26keep in mind that this is referring to a
- 00:04:28much broader category of beings rather
- 00:04:31than the Christian evil creatures that
- 00:04:33we associate with the term today
- 00:04:35so what were these demons well the
- 00:04:38demons were everywhere and they were
- 00:04:40seen as the cause behind all kinds of
- 00:04:42different issues both personal and
- 00:04:45larger societal issues it was demons
- 00:04:48that caused illnesses both mental and
- 00:04:50physical it was demons that could cause
- 00:04:52Strife in general in society it could
- 00:04:55affect the crops in the fields demons
- 00:04:59that did Evil things which some evil
- 00:05:01some demons did was a problem to the
- 00:05:04ancient Mesopotamians and they were
- 00:05:06feared and they developed ways for
- 00:05:08humans to control and get rid of these
- 00:05:11creatures as we both see soon to
- 00:05:13understand more how they worked I think
- 00:05:14it's probably useful to take some
- 00:05:16particular examples so demons could be
- 00:05:19very ambiguous creatures that could take
- 00:05:21on different forms or no form at all but
- 00:05:24there are certain famous demon
- 00:05:26personalities that had certain
- 00:05:28characteristics and personalities and
- 00:05:30were associated with certain things one
- 00:05:33of the most famous of these demons was
- 00:05:36a frightening female demon that was
- 00:05:38primarily seen as a great danger to
- 00:05:40children and newborn babies indeed the
- 00:05:43thing she was most feared for was that
- 00:05:45she would stalk mothers and eat their
- 00:05:47babies either before or after birth in
- 00:05:50other words she is definitely a demon
- 00:05:52that represents the dangers of
- 00:05:53childbirth and the possibilities of
- 00:05:56miscarriage if a mother has a
- 00:05:58miscarriage the baby is stillborn or the
- 00:06:00mother doesn't survive the birth this is
- 00:06:02the work of La mashtu quite an
- 00:06:04unpleasant creature these frightening
- 00:06:07characteristics and features can also be
- 00:06:09seen from depictions of her as she's
- 00:06:11often portrayed with a lion's head and
- 00:06:13taloned hands clutching snakes and
- 00:06:16nursing a piglet the theme of motherhood
- 00:06:18is present here but in a kind of Twisted
- 00:06:20way
- 00:06:21the origins of this demon is uncertain
- 00:06:24but one of the names by which he is
- 00:06:26known is as the daughter of Anu Anu
- 00:06:30being the chief God in the Mesopotamian
- 00:06:32Pantheon in other words it seems like La
- 00:06:35Master originally came from the world of
- 00:06:37gods perhaps a goddess herself but that
- 00:06:40she somehow fell from that position to
- 00:06:42instead inhabit the world as an evil
- 00:06:44demon obviously this was the kind of
- 00:06:47demon that people wanted to get rid of
- 00:06:48and there were many techniques and
- 00:06:50rituals aimed at doing exactly this
- 00:06:52complex incantations that would drive
- 00:06:55her off connected to this another very
- 00:06:57famous and well-known demon in this
- 00:06:59context is Pazuzu indeed he is perhaps
- 00:07:02best remembered as the demon from the
- 00:07:041973 movie The Exorcist in which he
- 00:07:07basically plays the role of the villain
- 00:07:09this is quite interesting because while
- 00:07:11Pazuzu certainly has a frightening
- 00:07:13appearance and some incantations do
- 00:07:16describe him as the king of the evil
- 00:07:18wind demons he was mostly used as a
- 00:07:20protective Spirit particularly against
- 00:07:22la mashtu
- 00:07:24Pazuzu really looks like a monster he
- 00:07:26has the head of a beast with long claws
- 00:07:29and four wings but the figure of this
- 00:07:31demon would be employed as protection
- 00:07:33his head would often be worn by pregnant
- 00:07:36women to keep La mashtu away from The
- 00:07:38Unborn Child and a statue of him could
- 00:07:41be kept in the house or used in rituals
- 00:07:43for the same reason quite the opposite
- 00:07:46of his role in The Exorcist in other
- 00:07:48words aside from these two prominent
- 00:07:50characters we also have other more
- 00:07:51ambiguous kinds of demons or creatures
- 00:07:54that roam the lands of Mesopotamia there
- 00:07:56was for example the so-called liliths or
- 00:07:59lilithu female spirits of women who died
- 00:08:02in childbirth that could roam around as
- 00:08:04well as these similar aradat Lily ghosts
- 00:08:07of young women who had died unmarried
- 00:08:09that now drifted with a wind from the
- 00:08:10hills and haunted men at night
- 00:08:12many have of course connected these
- 00:08:14liliths the etymology of which means
- 00:08:16something like a female spirit or demon
- 00:08:18with a figure of Lilith in the Bible
- 00:08:21sometimes conceived of as the first wife
- 00:08:23of Adam
- 00:08:24etymologically there's probably a
- 00:08:26connection and it's another example of
- 00:08:27the influence of Mesopotamian mythology
- 00:08:30on the books of the Bible again to
- 00:08:33protect themselves against all these
- 00:08:35malevolent forces the Mesopotamians used
- 00:08:37various techniques of what we could call
- 00:08:40Magic
- 00:08:41just like in the later Islamic World
- 00:08:43basically all magic or occult practices
- 00:08:45had a protective purpose it sought the
- 00:08:49help from God or Gods from Evil forces
- 00:08:51and their influence either to eradicate
- 00:08:54an already existing problem or to
- 00:08:56prevent something bad from happening to
- 00:08:57begin with
- 00:08:59there are examples of non-protective
- 00:09:01magic too though and the most famous and
- 00:09:03prominent example of this is the witch
- 00:09:05yes there were witches in ancient
- 00:09:07Mesopotamia too Dina constantopoulos
- 00:09:10writes that the witch is quote perhaps
- 00:09:12best rendered as malevolent magic user
- 00:09:15known as kasheptu and Acadian witches
- 00:09:18were evil Cosmic beings similar to
- 00:09:20Demons that used magic to do evil rather
- 00:09:23than for protective reasons they could
- 00:09:25hurt or curse people and could be both
- 00:09:28male and female even though the female
- 00:09:30version is definitely overrepresented in
- 00:09:33other words while magic could be used
- 00:09:34for good or evil the kasheptu or which
- 00:09:37represented the malevolent use of magic
- 00:09:39and something that one needed to be
- 00:09:41protected from so now that we have a
- 00:09:43kind of General overview of some of the
- 00:09:46creatures and evil spirits that roam the
- 00:09:48lands of ancient Mesopotamia what can we
- 00:09:50say about the actual practices used to
- 00:09:53ward off these forces I mentioned
- 00:09:56earlier that there existed various
- 00:09:58rituals and protective
- 00:10:01ways that one would counter these evil
- 00:10:05forces or get rid of them or at least
- 00:10:07control them in some way and this
- 00:10:09included fascinating things everything
- 00:10:12from incantations protective amulets
- 00:10:16exorcisms and various other juicy things
- 00:10:19it's definitely true that the
- 00:10:21Mesopotamians had developed systems that
- 00:10:23were called protective rituals indeed a
- 00:10:26lot of such Traditions that we find in
- 00:10:28other places later in history such as in
- 00:10:30the Greek magical papyri or in Egyptian
- 00:10:33and Roman magic may actually originate
- 00:10:35in places like Babylonia and Assyria we
- 00:10:38have long text written back then about
- 00:10:40how to protect oneself from witchcraft
- 00:10:42or demons and archaeological findings
- 00:10:45also gives us first-hand examples of
- 00:10:47what this could look like
- 00:10:48at the center of this tradition was a
- 00:10:51class of professional exorcists referred
- 00:10:54to as ashipu
- 00:10:56these were ritual Specialists that could
- 00:10:58do everything from divination herbal
- 00:11:01medicine and to exercise and banish evil
- 00:11:04demons
- 00:11:05a pretty important person in a society
- 00:11:07in which these forces were omnipresent
- 00:11:10the art ship who had a bunch of
- 00:11:11different tools and special knowledge
- 00:11:13with which he could accomplish this
- 00:11:15first and foremost when protection was
- 00:11:17sought from evil spirits or misfortunes
- 00:11:19this was done from the Gods Not the
- 00:11:22diamonds right but the actual Gods who
- 00:11:25ruled the world deities like enki Marduk
- 00:11:28or Ishtar in other words the ritual
- 00:11:30specialist would counter evil spirits by
- 00:11:33invoking the power up and seeking the
- 00:11:35help of the Gods and he would do so
- 00:11:37through spells incantations and magical
- 00:11:40objects such as amulets not only do some
- 00:11:43of these objects survive but we also
- 00:11:45have significant writings which attest
- 00:11:47to these practices and even sometimes
- 00:11:49give instructions there are very
- 00:11:51significant works such as the so-called
- 00:11:53Exorcist manual a compendium of
- 00:11:56everything that an aspiring professional
- 00:11:58needed to know in terms of esoteric
- 00:12:00knowledge incantations medical knowledge
- 00:12:03and generally how to perform rituals of
- 00:12:05exorcism works such as these are
- 00:12:07invaluable for our understanding of how
- 00:12:09the these magical practices worked in
- 00:12:11Antiquity on top of just being
- 00:12:13incredibly fascinating in themselves so
- 00:12:16say you were being bothered by a demonic
- 00:12:18Force perhaps your house was being
- 00:12:20haunted or a family member had
- 00:12:22mysteriously Fallen ill or you wanted to
- 00:12:24protect your baby from the child eating
- 00:12:26lamashtu in that case you could simply
- 00:12:28call an ashipu who would come and solve
- 00:12:30your problem he would and it is mostly
- 00:12:32he in these cases show up to your house
- 00:12:35and make an assessment of what needed to
- 00:12:37be done since ghosts and demons were
- 00:12:39such a taken for granted part of
- 00:12:41everyday life the vibe here is kind of
- 00:12:43similar to people today calling for a
- 00:12:45doctor to help with a medical problem
- 00:12:47got a demon problem just call your local
- 00:12:49ashipu and he will help you out and
- 00:12:51indeed in this culture the doctor was
- 00:12:53kind of the same person as The Exorcist
- 00:12:55since the ashipu could also have medical
- 00:12:57knowledge once the demon was identified
- 00:13:00or the ashibu knew what needed to be
- 00:13:02done he would get to work Gathering all
- 00:13:05the materials that were required for the
- 00:13:08ritual before it would commence we've
- 00:13:10already mentioned some of the details of
- 00:13:12the kinds of practices and material that
- 00:13:15would be used in these kinds of
- 00:13:17exorcistic rituals say for example that
- 00:13:20your troubles were caused by a ghost the
- 00:13:22spirit of a deceased human being
- 00:13:25this could happen for various reasons
- 00:13:26and the effects of the ghost would often
- 00:13:28be connected to the way they died
- 00:13:31if you have trouble breathing maybe
- 00:13:32that's a ghost who died by strangulation
- 00:13:35or by Drowning do you have a terrible
- 00:13:37fever maybe you're haunted by a ghost
- 00:13:39who died in a fire
- 00:13:41ghosts were again spirits of the Dead
- 00:13:43who had not quite moved on to the
- 00:13:46underworlds or in more Sinister examples
- 00:13:48might have been summoned by a
- 00:13:50necromancer the job of The Exorcist in
- 00:13:52these cases was to make sure the ghost
- 00:13:54could make its way to that underworld
- 00:13:56through reciting incantations and spells
- 00:13:58it's all kind of similar to the way that
- 00:14:00we conceive of ghosts today and the way
- 00:14:03that they are portrayed in movies and so
- 00:14:05on the ashipu as part of this ritual
- 00:14:08could chant incantations that included
- 00:14:11instructions like I implore you to
- 00:14:13return to your true Abode in the
- 00:14:15Underworld and then the ghost would
- 00:14:17hopefully listen to him for example now
- 00:14:19if your problems were rather caused by a
- 00:14:22demon that was a more complicated matter
- 00:14:25demons are not deceased human beings but
- 00:14:27Immortal Spirits as we saw standing in
- 00:14:30between Gods and Men
- 00:14:32so unlike a witch or a ghost you
- 00:14:35couldn't get rid of a demon by killing
- 00:14:37it or destroying it this required more
- 00:14:39complicated rituals in the case of La
- 00:14:42Master the baby eating demon we
- 00:14:44discussed before there were several ways
- 00:14:46of getting rid of her
- 00:14:47usually The Exorcist would use a
- 00:14:50figurine of the Goddess herself which
- 00:14:52became like a kind of receptable or body
- 00:14:54for the actual demon the figurine could
- 00:14:57be placed next to the victim or in
- 00:14:59general kept in the House Then followed
- 00:15:01several days of ritual the figurine
- 00:15:04would be taken care of even perhaps fed
- 00:15:06and such things almost in way to show
- 00:15:08hospitality and get the demon on your
- 00:15:10good side
- 00:15:11The Exorcist would throughout these days
- 00:15:13recite incantations and perform various
- 00:15:16rituals
- 00:15:17all the effects of the rituals performed
- 00:15:19upon the figurine were transferred to
- 00:15:21the demon herself so to say so the the
- 00:15:24figure of this demon just like when you
- 00:15:27pray to a god in various polytheistic
- 00:15:29religions were seen as the kind of as as
- 00:15:31embodying the demon and what you did to
- 00:15:34the Statue of the figurine affected the
- 00:15:37actual Spirit herself lastly then after
- 00:15:40these days of rituals the figurine would
- 00:15:42be taken away and buried outside the
- 00:15:45city walls together with another
- 00:15:46figurine of a black dog thus one had
- 00:15:49banished lamashtu in the case of this
- 00:15:52demon s we also often see the employment
- 00:15:54of Pazuzu that other demon as a
- 00:15:57protective force in these rituals in
- 00:15:59connection to rituals like these or just
- 00:16:01in themselves for preventive or
- 00:16:02productive reasons The Exorcist could
- 00:16:04also make amulets that would protect the
- 00:16:07prison
- 00:16:07amulets could look in different ways and
- 00:16:10be made up of various materials and
- 00:16:12their contents developed across the
- 00:16:14history of Mesopotamia for the most part
- 00:16:16amulets in Mesopotamia were so-called
- 00:16:18unleathered or semi-lettered amulets in
- 00:16:21other words they didn't necessarily have
- 00:16:23anything written on them or inscribed on
- 00:16:25them lettered amulets would appear later
- 00:16:27in Egyptian and Roman contexts and
- 00:16:30adopted a Mesopotamia through that but
- 00:16:32in the earlier period this was usually
- 00:16:34not the case an amulet could be a little
- 00:16:37bag made of animal hire that contained
- 00:16:39some sort of natural material like a
- 00:16:41plant or something that was considered
- 00:16:43protective or the object could be
- 00:16:45infused with its protective Powers
- 00:16:47through incantations vocally recited
- 00:16:49over it by The Exorcist it could then be
- 00:16:52worn around the neck or hung above the
- 00:16:54door or bed of someone you wanted to
- 00:16:55keep safe again in the case of La Master
- 00:16:58we saw that one very popular amulet was
- 00:17:00to wear a figurine of the head of the
- 00:17:02demon Pazuzu who protected against her
- 00:17:05evil Powers the Spells and incantation
- 00:17:07used by The ashipur Exorcist could vary
- 00:17:11also depending on the particular
- 00:17:12circumstance or spirit that one worked
- 00:17:15with but in most cases they take the
- 00:17:17form of seeking help from the gods
- 00:17:19praising them before asking for the
- 00:17:21specific favor and ending with a promise
- 00:17:24to fulfill if help is granted as I said
- 00:17:26in later periods we also see the
- 00:17:28prominence of written talismans where
- 00:17:30images or spells will be written on an
- 00:17:32object like a piece of parchment or
- 00:17:34copper or stone and just the fact that
- 00:17:37those words are written on it means it
- 00:17:39has protective powers
- 00:17:40a common spell could look like this
- 00:17:42quote First there would be the word an
- 00:17:46which means spell and then it would say
- 00:17:48the actual spell like like this
- 00:17:50daughter of Anu prominent one among the
- 00:17:53gods in in most princely lady but also
- 00:17:57binder Grievous asako demon ghost that
- 00:18:00weighs heavily upon mankind so that
- 00:18:02exalted La Master should not come close
- 00:18:04to man may you be bound by the spell of
- 00:18:07Heaven Bound by the spell of Earth
- 00:18:10this kind of thing becomes incredibly
- 00:18:12widespread in later periods we see a
- 00:18:15very extravagant examples of this in the
- 00:18:17so-called Babylonian incantation bowls
- 00:18:19of late Antiquity these were often
- 00:18:21conceived in a Jewish context but
- 00:18:23functioned in the same way rabbinic or
- 00:18:25Biblical verses could be written in
- 00:18:27these bowls which then function to trap
- 00:18:30evil demons it's fascinating stuff and
- 00:18:33the later Islamic tradition and there
- 00:18:35are called practices we see the exact
- 00:18:37same things with quranic verses or names
- 00:18:39of God in Arabic being employed as
- 00:18:42talismans by simply writing them down on
- 00:18:44different materials
- 00:18:46some argue that many of these practices
- 00:18:48have their origins in ancient
- 00:18:50Mesopotamia as a third example maybe you
- 00:18:53are being bothered by the malevolent
- 00:18:54magic of witches or ashaptu this is a
- 00:18:58little different from demons because
- 00:18:59witches can be killed the ritual of
- 00:19:02getting rid of a witch is somewhat
- 00:19:04similar to a demon exorcism though the
- 00:19:06ashipu would often make a figurine of
- 00:19:09the witch and rituals performed on the
- 00:19:11figurine would transfer to the actual
- 00:19:13rich just like in the case with LA
- 00:19:15Master for example
- 00:19:16in a similar fashion incantations were
- 00:19:18recited and then the figurine was often
- 00:19:21burned in a fire so that the witch's
- 00:19:23Spirit would rise like smoke to the
- 00:19:25heavens and be punished by the gods and
- 00:19:28even more mundane problems could be
- 00:19:30solved with the help of these ritual
- 00:19:32Specialists perhaps you got stung by a
- 00:19:34scorpion a pretty serious thing in the
- 00:19:36ancient Middle East one instruction
- 00:19:38sounds like this quote a bundle of seven
- 00:19:41Reeds to be used as a torch then the
- 00:19:44Scorpion will be placed on the burning
- 00:19:46torch until it is consumed during that
- 00:19:49time one will recite Over The Sting the
- 00:19:51prayer as follows and then there follows
- 00:19:53a longer prayer which ends like this
- 00:19:55then let the flowing water carry
- 00:19:58everything away in its Eddies let the
- 00:20:00current take it away and may a solitary
- 00:20:02hand that of envel descend to rest on
- 00:20:05its victim such is the formula to calm
- 00:20:08the effects of the sting of a scorpion
- 00:20:10indeed these are just a few examples of
- 00:20:13the different ways that the ashipur the
- 00:20:15ritual Specialist or Exorcist would help
- 00:20:17people with various evil forces or
- 00:20:20demons and spirits in ancient
- 00:20:22Mesopotamia but as we saw this was an
- 00:20:25accepted reality this was part of
- 00:20:27everyday life for people and calling for
- 00:20:29an exorcist was basically the same as us
- 00:20:31calling for a doctor today the lands of
- 00:20:34Babylon and Assyria of Sumer and akkad
- 00:20:37were filled with spooky ghosts and
- 00:20:39spirits and creatures which sometimes
- 00:20:42could cause you illnesses or other
- 00:20:44problems and the only way to get rid of
- 00:20:46those problems was to call a ritual
- 00:20:49specialist an ashipu or Exorcist that
- 00:20:52could use his specialized knowledge and
- 00:20:55the tools that he had at his disposal to
- 00:20:58get rid of the issue some of this we
- 00:21:01recognize very clearly from our modern
- 00:21:03conception of these things from how
- 00:21:05ghosts work to demons and exorcisms but
- 00:21:08we should also be careful not to project
- 00:21:10are modern ideas onto a context in
- 00:21:14ancient times that was very different a
- 00:21:17lot of these Concepts and ideas have a
- 00:21:20different meaning to the ancient
- 00:21:21Mesopotamians than they perhaps do to us
- 00:21:23today but at the very least it remains a
- 00:21:26fascinating tradition of occult practice
- 00:21:30a fascinating tradition of ancient
- 00:21:32religion that not only can tell us a lot
- 00:21:34about the development of these kinds of
- 00:21:37ideas all the way to modern times but
- 00:21:40also of course fits perfectly into this
- 00:21:44wonderful yearly tradition of shocktober
- 00:21:47here on let's talk religion as I said in
- 00:21:50the beginning this is a collaboration
- 00:21:51with three other creators again Dr
- 00:21:55Justin Sledge from esoterica who will be
- 00:21:58making a video about the dibik the very
- 00:22:01famous kind of possessing uh spirit of
- 00:22:04Judaism and especially or particularly
- 00:22:08he will be talking about the first case
- 00:22:10of dybic exorcism in the I believe the
- 00:22:1416th century and that's incredibly
- 00:22:17fascinating and of course connected to
- 00:22:19what we talk about here so I'll have
- 00:22:21talked just now about ancient exorcism
- 00:22:24the earliest examples of exorcistic
- 00:22:26rituals in ancient Mesopotamia and
- 00:22:29Justin will be talking about how that
- 00:22:31tradition is also present to some degree
- 00:22:34in Judaism with the case of the dybic so
- 00:22:37check out that video Dr Angela puka from
- 00:22:40Angela Symposium will be making a video
- 00:22:42about ancestor worship again very
- 00:22:45strongly connected to a lot of what
- 00:22:47we've been talking about here today uh
- 00:22:50incredibly interesting stuff so check
- 00:22:52out that video and then a trail aka the
- 00:22:54modern hermeticist will basically be
- 00:22:56putting out a full audiobook of a 17th
- 00:22:59century translation of the arbatel of
- 00:23:02magic a fast knitting grimoire from the
- 00:23:0516th century about ceremonial magic so
- 00:23:09do not miss out on those incredibly
- 00:23:11fascinating videos by some amazingly
- 00:23:14talented creators and friends and
- 00:23:17amazing human beings go to their
- 00:23:19channels there will be links in the
- 00:23:21description to all of that stuff to
- 00:23:23their videos and to their channels go
- 00:23:25watch the videos go subscribe to their
- 00:23:27channels you will not regret it it is
- 00:23:29truly some really awesome
- 00:23:31content here on YouTube I hope this
- 00:23:34video was a good introduction to some of
- 00:23:36the earliest examples of magic some of
- 00:23:40the earliest examples of occult
- 00:23:41practices and in particular exorcisms
- 00:23:44and demons in ancient Mesopotamia this
- 00:23:47is such a interesting topic to to
- 00:23:50research and talk about I just love
- 00:23:52doing this stuff and especially on a
- 00:23:55October evening like this look forward
- 00:23:59to more episodes in this year's October
- 00:24:02next week we are talk talking about the
