- 00:04:21art and I'm putting art and quotation
- 00:04:24marks here you using tools like
- 00:04:26mid-journey and chat GPT now all one has
- 00:04:30to do is type in some prompts and in no
- 00:04:33time at all the programs will
- 00:04:34auto-generate shockingly detailed and
- 00:04:37realistic imagery writing audio and
- 00:04:40animation now you no longer need any
- 00:04:43Talent skill practice or education to
- 00:04:45produce art that looks like it was
- 00:04:47created by professionals some of the
- 00:04:50airs that has garnered the most
- 00:04:51attention going viral multiple times in
- 00:04:54the last six months are imitations of
- 00:04:57the work of Wes Anderson imagining what
- 00:05:00various franchises might look like if
- 00:05:02directed by him this started with a
- 00:05:04handful of images visualizing a
- 00:05:06theoretical Wes Anderson Take On The
- 00:05:08Avengers that really blew up when
- 00:05:11enthusiastically shared by those lovable
- 00:05:13scamps the Russo Brothers but it really
- 00:05:16kicked into another gear in April when a
- 00:05:19company called curious Refuge released a
- 00:05:22series of videos imagining Wes Anderson
- 00:05:24directed versions of Star Wars Lord of
- 00:05:27the Rings and Avatar since then there
- 00:05:30have been countless imitators that
- 00:05:32haven't quite achieved the same degree
- 00:05:34of viral success West Anderson versions
- 00:05:37of Harry Potter and Jurassic Park and
- 00:05:39Spider-Man and Justice League and Hunger
- 00:05:42Games and multiple versions of the
- 00:05:44Matrix just a few days ago Instagram
- 00:05:46recommended me a series of AI generated
- 00:05:49images imagining a Wes Anderson version
- 00:05:52of succession and come on guys that has
- 00:05:55existed for 20 years and it's called The
- 00:05:57Royal tannenbaums
- 00:06:02part of why I wanted to talk about this
- 00:06:04is that I sort of have a special
- 00:06:06connection to the subject of Wes
- 00:06:08Anderson parody trailers back in 2015 I
- 00:06:12released a video called what if Wes
- 00:06:14Anderson directed X-Men which honestly
- 00:06:17still might be the thing I'm best known
- 00:06:19for it's kind of the same general idea
- 00:06:22as these new AI videos except that I
- 00:06:25spent months working on it with my
- 00:06:27actual human friends instead of having a
- 00:06:29computer make it in a day and to be
- 00:06:31clear I wasn't even the first person to
- 00:06:33make a what if Wes Anderson directed
- 00:06:35video Jeff loveness writer of Ant-Man
- 00:06:38and the WASP quantumania made Wes
- 00:06:40Anderson Spider-Man all the way back in
- 00:06:432010. So anyway on the one hand I'm
- 00:06:45looking at these new Wes Anderson videos
- 00:06:47going uh guys we did this years ago it's
- 00:06:51over but even despite the been there
- 00:06:54done that aspect
- 00:06:56there's a lot more that bothers me about
- 00:06:58them I can already hear some people
- 00:07:00saying now hey man these are just some
- 00:07:03fun YouTube videos where people are
- 00:07:04playing around with some new toys why
- 00:07:06are you making a whole video about this
- 00:07:08instead of talking about real movies
- 00:07:10well hypothetical straw man I'm making a
- 00:07:13whole video about it because what right
- 00:07:15now seems like just some tech curious
- 00:07:17people playing around with new tools
- 00:07:19could actually be the beginning of a
- 00:07:22very serious shift that will affect real
- 00:07:25movies actually I'm willing to bet that
- 00:07:28by the time I finish writing this essay
- 00:07:30enough new evidence will have appeared
- 00:07:33to confirm that yeah AI art is affecting
- 00:07:36way more than just YouTube videos
- 00:07:39and not in a good way before we get into
- 00:07:42the videos themselves we have to answer
- 00:07:44the question
- 00:07:45why Wes Anderson why do people keep
- 00:07:49parodying him more than any other
- 00:07:51filmmaker why did I do it in the first
- 00:07:54place well in my case I actually had a
- 00:07:56whole series of videos on this channel
- 00:07:58imagining what various superhero movies
- 00:08:00would look like if made by directors
- 00:08:03ranging from Sergio Leone to ingmar
- 00:08:05Bergman to Noah bombach to Werner Herzog
- 00:08:08but I totally understand why the Wes
- 00:08:10Anderson one was the most successful
- 00:08:13Anderson straddles the line between Art
- 00:08:15House and mainstream even if his movies
- 00:08:18don't do Blockbuster level box office
- 00:08:20even the most casual moviegoers are
- 00:08:23familiar with him and understand what
- 00:08:25his movies look and feel like there's
- 00:08:28probably no other filmmaker working
- 00:08:29today with such an immediately
- 00:08:31identifiable style like sure Spielberg
- 00:08:34and Scorsese are more famous but ask a
- 00:08:38random person to describe what one of
- 00:08:40their movies looks like and you're not
- 00:08:41going to get a clear answer
- 00:08:43but everyone knows what a Wes Anderson
- 00:08:46movie looks like you can spot it a
- 00:08:49hundred yards away it's ripe for parody
- 00:08:51because there's a set of characteristics
- 00:08:53that apply to just about every film he's
- 00:08:56made we're talking about symmetrical
- 00:08:58framing static shots camera movement
- 00:09:01either parallel or perpendicular to the
- 00:09:04action almost always on a dolly Bill
- 00:09:06Murray flat backgrounds the camera
- 00:09:08almost always at eye level warm color
- 00:09:10palette leaning into yellowish Hues Owen
- 00:09:13Wilson dry subdued performances from the
- 00:09:15actors perfectly tailored clothing
- 00:09:16insert shots of books and objects shot
- 00:09:19from straight overhead Jason Schwartz
- 00:09:20handmade analog filmmaking and stop
- 00:09:23motion animation anyway you get the idea
- 00:09:26because the characteristics are
- 00:09:27relatively simple they can be imitated
- 00:09:30pretty easily with little to no budget
- 00:09:32you can see this on display in the
- 00:09:34recent Tick-Tock trend of my day but
- 00:09:37make it Wes Anderson where people just
- 00:09:40shoot a montage of an average day in
- 00:09:42their life but with the visual tropes of
- 00:09:44a Wes Anderson movie which brings us to
- 00:09:48the AI versions
- 00:09:50as I mentioned earlier the whole AI Wes
- 00:09:53Anderson thing began with those Avengers
- 00:09:55images late last year and honestly even
- 00:09:59aside from how they were made I think
- 00:10:01these are pretty weak they don't even
- 00:10:03have the framing or lighting of a Wes
- 00:10:05Anderson movie like plenty of people
- 00:10:07doing fan art over the years have done
- 00:10:09it way better but the main thing I want
- 00:10:12to focus on here are the videos produced
- 00:10:14by curious Refuge Star Wars by Wes
- 00:10:17Anderson Lord of the Rings by Wes
- 00:10:19Anderson and Avatar by Wes Anderson all
- 00:10:23three released within the span of a
- 00:10:26month before this the company curious
- 00:10:28Refuge wasn't in the business of
- 00:10:30narrative storytelling at all welcome to
- 00:10:33curious Refuge this channel is going to
- 00:10:35be super random but that's exactly the
- 00:10:37way it should be they made tutorials
- 00:10:40about Adobe After Effects and other
- 00:10:42software they had a course called the
- 00:10:44Curious millionaire that taught how to
- 00:10:46make money as an entrepreneur and then
- 00:10:49one day they released the Star Wars by
- 00:10:52Wes Anderson video which I gotta say
- 00:10:55delivers on its premise a lot better
- 00:10:57than that Avengers stuff it has the
- 00:10:59framing it has the cast of actors even
- 00:11:01if the person they claim is Scarlett
- 00:11:03Johansson looks like Millie Bobby Brown
- 00:11:04instead but overall yeah sure that looks
- 00:11:09like a Wes Anderson Star Wars the video
- 00:11:12went viral and in the YouTube comments
- 00:11:15section at least got an extremely
- 00:11:17positive reaction curious Refuge
- 00:11:19immediately changed their entire
- 00:11:21business to focus on AI filmmaking and
- 00:11:24they currently have an AI filmmaking
- 00:11:26course available for the low low price
- 00:11:28of five hundred dollars
- 00:11:30positive YouTube comments a sure sign of
- 00:11:34trouble to come in an interview curious
- 00:11:36Refuge co-founder Caleb Ward the guy who
- 00:11:40uh made these videos broke down in
- 00:11:44detail how they were put together it
- 00:11:46turns out he didn't even come up with
- 00:11:48the idea himself he asked chat GPT to
- 00:11:52give him a list of potential viral
- 00:11:54YouTube videos and one of the ideas it
- 00:11:57generated was Wes Anderson Star Wars we
- 00:12:00used AI to come up with the idea for the
- 00:12:03video I basically went to Chachi BT and
- 00:12:06I was like give me some ideas that
- 00:12:08people might enjoy and it came up with a
- 00:12:10bunch of ideas in Star Wars by Wes
- 00:12:11Anderson was one of them and instantly I
- 00:12:13was like oh yeah that I think that would
- 00:12:15do well chat GPT also wrote the script
- 00:12:17and generated the shot list then
- 00:12:19mid-journey was used to create the shots
- 00:12:22with human animation added by did and
- 00:12:25narration by 11 Labs the only actual
- 00:12:28human element in the entire thing came
- 00:12:31from refining the images and adding some
- 00:12:34subtle animation to make the still
- 00:12:35images seem like live action part of the
- 00:12:38reason Wes Anderson has become the go-to
- 00:12:40filmmaker for AI users to imitate is
- 00:12:43that his visual style works with the
- 00:12:45limitations of AI right now ai animation
- 00:12:48software capable of creating complex
- 00:12:51movement isn't widely available to the
- 00:12:53public and also looks pretty janky so
- 00:12:56most people are working with mid-journey
- 00:12:57which only creates still images but
- 00:13:00since Wes Anderson's movies are full of
- 00:13:02static shots of people posed carefully
- 00:13:04in the center of the frame his style can
- 00:13:07be replicated fairly accurately so true
- 00:13:10if they really wanted to impress us
- 00:13:12they'd do Oliver Stone Star Wars or Tony
- 00:13:15Scott's The Avengers look I'll admit I
- 00:13:18came in here pretty skeptical about this
- 00:13:20whole AI thing but I try to give
- 00:13:22everything a fair shake and I always
- 00:13:24like to do my research so I hopefully
- 00:13:27know what I'm talking about
- 00:13:29so I decided to try an experiment
- 00:13:32since the Curious Refuge dude gave a
- 00:13:34full breakdown of his process for making
- 00:13:37one of these videos I thought hey maybe
- 00:13:40I should use that same process to make
- 00:13:42one of my own and I'll use it to make a
- 00:13:45Wes Anderson X-Men I already did this
- 00:13:47the difficult old-fashioned way so let's
- 00:13:50see how this new version Compares did
- 00:13:52this feel weird yup am I using tools
- 00:13:55that are ethically pretty questionable
- 00:13:57yup is this hopefully in service of the
- 00:14:00greater good and therefore justifies my
- 00:14:02actions
- 00:14:03I hope so so anyway
- 00:14:06here's what I did first I went to chat
- 00:14:09gbt and gave it the prompt script for an
- 00:14:12X-Men movie trailer directed by Wes
- 00:14:14Anderson then I instructed chat GPT to
- 00:14:17turn that script into a shot list then I
- 00:14:20spent a few minutes learning how to use
- 00:14:21mid-journey to get the right results
- 00:14:22turns out mid-journey Works through a
- 00:14:25Discord server weird anyway then I used
- 00:14:28mid-journey to create each of the shots
- 00:14:30on the shot list then I ran those
- 00:14:33through did to make the people move a
- 00:14:35little bit and finally I used 11 labs to
- 00:14:38generate the narration and so
- 00:14:41here it is my AI generated Wes Anderson
- 00:14:44X-Men
- 00:14:46in a world where mutants live among us

- 00:15:59don't just mean it sucks because
- 00:16:01mid-journey is awful at group shots and
- 00:16:03some of the faces are kind of [ __ ] up
- 00:16:04like if that's your argument against AI
- 00:16:06you are missing the forest for the trees
- 00:16:08because the truth is this AI stuff is
- 00:16:10rapidly improving and those issues will
- 00:16:12be fixed soon like remember when we all
- 00:16:14laughed at the weird hands with too many
- 00:16:16fingers and now hey they took care of
- 00:16:18all that and if we want a nitpick there
- 00:16:20are also easy things to complain about
- 00:16:22like where did they get that X-Men team
- 00:16:24there's no Cyclops or Wolverine or storm
- 00:16:27and yet Quicksilver makes the cut this
- 00:16:30is an embarrassing mistake for AI but it
- 00:16:33is a great win for Quicksilver like a
- 00:16:35real Cinderella story like a 16th seed
- 00:16:37winning March Madness good for you
- 00:16:39Pietro but look the real problem here is
- 00:16:43that this doesn't even feel like a Wes
- 00:16:46Anderson movie or even a trailer for a
- 00:16:49Wes Anderson movie like the title X-Men

- 00:16:55Anderson movie his titles are always to

- 00:17:11the Whimsical Fellowship what is this
- 00:17:14these aren't imitating Wes Anderson
- 00:17:17movies they are imitating the 2013 SNL
- 00:17:20Wes Anderson parody the midnight codery
- 00:17:23of sinister Intruders and the thing
- 00:17:25about that parody is that it had
- 00:17:27narration by Alec Baldwin which was a
- 00:17:30riff on the Royal ten bombs which Alec
- 00:17:32Baldwin also narrated Royal Tenenbaum
- 00:17:35bought the house on Archer Avenue in the
- 00:17:36winter of his 35th year and so all of
- 00:17:39these AI parodies also have narrators
- 00:17:42despite the fact that a they don't sound
- 00:17:44like Alec Baldwin and B none of the
- 00:17:47actual trailers for Wes Anderson's real
- 00:17:49movies have narration
- 00:17:53so if you don't have Alec Baldwin
- 00:17:56there's no joke and it's just an
- 00:17:58inaccurate imitation these videos reduce
- 00:18:01Wes Anderson to an Instagram filter a
- 00:18:05checklist of style tropes to be pasted
- 00:18:07onto something there is no effort to
- 00:18:09engage with his work on a deeper level

- 00:18:24beginning his work has been incredibly
- 00:18:26kinetic there are the Epic slow motion
- 00:18:29Dolly shots the sparingly used chaotic
- 00:18:32handheld shots his stop-motion work has
- 00:18:34even more energy as the camera tracks
- 00:18:37perfectly alongside characters running
- 00:18:38and flipping and dancing through scenes
- 00:18:40Wes Anderson movies have action scenes
- 00:18:43why do people forget this and while he's
- 00:18:46had a consistent aesthetic Baseline
- 00:18:48through his entire filmography it has
- 00:18:51evolved over time the French batch looks
- 00:18:54wildly different from Rushmore and
- 00:18:56depending on the film he'll use
- 00:18:58different aspect ratios and film stocks
- 00:19:01and color palettes none of these AI
- 00:19:03videos bother to get into the actual
- 00:19:06stories of these hypothetical movies
- 00:19:08they deliver the basic premise of the
- 00:19:11original film but do nothing with how
- 00:19:13Anderson might approach it there are no
- 00:19:16scenes our dialogue or relationships
- 00:19:18between the characters the thing that
- 00:19:21annoys me the most about these videos is
- 00:19:23that they completely ignore the humanity
- 00:19:25of his movies which is as important if
- 00:19:28not more so than the Aesthetics see
- 00:19:31while all West Anderson's movies are fun
- 00:19:33they're also all sad nearly every one of
- 00:19:37his movies is about people dealing with
- 00:19:39grief in some way at the start of his
- 00:19:42latest film asteroid City Jason
- 00:19:44schwartzman's character is struggling to
- 00:19:46figure out how to break the news to his
- 00:19:48children that their mother has died The
- 00:19:50Darjeeling Limited is about three
- 00:19:52brothers processing the recent death of
- 00:19:54their father The Life Aquatic is about a
- 00:19:57man seeking revenge for the death of his
- 00:19:59best friend and along the way he meets
- 00:20:01his estranged son who spoilers also dies
- 00:20:04almost every one of his movies is about
- 00:20:07people who are broken in some way or
- 00:20:09another finding some kind of meaning or
- 00:20:12purpose or belonging in a unique
- 00:20:14location or community in Asteroid City
- 00:20:17it happens when the characters are
- 00:20:19quarantined in a small desert town in
- 00:20:21The Grand Budapest Hotel a young Refugee
- 00:20:24finds his purpose under the tutelage of
- 00:20:26an eccentric Hotel Concierge in the
- 00:20:28French dispatch it's the collection of
- 00:20:30writers for the titular magazine In The
- 00:20:32Life Aquatic it's the boat in the Royal
- 00:20:35Tenenbaums a dysfunctional family
- 00:20:37reunites in their childhood home to try
- 00:20:39to mend their many emotional wounds the
- 00:20:42thing is if these AI parodies were
- 00:20:45actually any good and they wanted to put
- 00:20:48in any effort they could absolutely
- 00:20:50Embrace those themes like for example in
- 00:20:54the Star Wars one they could have Luke
- 00:20:56Skywalker grieving the deaths of his
- 00:20:58aunt and uncle and finding a new purpose
- 00:21:01on board the Millennium Falcon with this
- 00:21:03eccentric group of rebels Lord of the
- 00:21:06Rings is already about a strange
- 00:21:07collection of people on a potentially
- 00:21:09doomed Quest like The Life Aquatic there
- 00:21:12are difficult group dynamics and tension
- 00:21:14everyone's dealing with their own [ __ ]
- 00:21:16you could have like I don't know Gandalf
- 00:21:18as the emotionally manipulative leader
- 00:21:20who gets angry and takes it out on the
- 00:21:22group when gladriel won't sleep with him
- 00:21:24but none of that is in the AI versions
- 00:21:27these are unable to probe any deeper
- 00:21:30than going Bill Murray is in Wes
- 00:21:32Anderson movies and he's an old man
- 00:21:34Gandalf is an old man so here
- 00:21:37nightmarishly is Bill Murray's face
- 00:21:39pasted on Gandalf's head also there's
- 00:21:42this really important fact that everyone
- 00:21:44keeps overlooking which is that Wes
- 00:21:46Anderson makes comedies she's been
- 00:21:49murdered
- 00:21:50and you think I did it
- 00:21:54and none of these videos are remotely
- 00:21:57funny like there are zero jokes it sucks
- 00:22:00I mean artificial intelligence more like
- 00:22:03short official into my pants
- 00:22:08that sucked yes Emma it did suck
- 00:22:13but it sucked in a way
- 00:22:15that only a human could suck
- 00:22:18as I've mentioned already I've made a
- 00:22:20Wes Anderson parody before and I'm not
- 00:22:22saying there's only one correct way to
- 00:22:24do it I'm not even saying mine is
- 00:22:25amazing there's a lot I do differently
- 00:22:27now but I do think that mine is pretty
- 00:22:31solid so here is how I tried to do it
- 00:22:34years before using AI was even an option
- 00:22:38my goal with the video was for it to be
- 00:22:40less of a parody and more like a
- 00:22:42filmmaking exercise I didn't want to do
- 00:22:45what that SNL video had done and just
- 00:22:48plug in characters and moments from his
- 00:22:50other movies into a new context I tried
- 00:22:53to do my best take on how I thought
- 00:22:55Anderson might actually approach that
- 00:22:58material I picked X-Men because in a lot
- 00:23:00of ways it already was a Wes Anderson
- 00:23:03movie it was a group of brilliant teens
- 00:23:06or gifted youngsters living in an
- 00:23:08elaborately decorated mansion with an
- 00:23:10emotionally distant Father Figure and
- 00:23:13they all wear coordinated yellow and
- 00:23:15blue jumpsuits like that is all just a
- 00:23:17part of the original premise and making
- 00:23:20this video did not just take a couple of
- 00:23:22days first I went through and re-watched
- 00:23:25all of Anderson's movies taking notes on
- 00:23:28recurring themes and types of characters
- 00:23:29and relationships the idea was to go
- 00:23:32deeper than just a checklist of
- 00:23:35stylistic elements and wow I am really
- 00:23:37sorry if this sounds way too pretentious
- 00:23:39for a silly YouTube video but what I'm
- 00:23:42getting at is
- 00:23:43I put a lot of effort into it anyway
- 00:23:45since Anderson obviously has a fondness
- 00:23:48for media from the 1960s I went back and
- 00:23:51used the original core X-Men team from
- 00:23:531963. Big Sci-Fi Action isn't really his
- 00:23:58thing so I thought it made sense to have
- 00:24:00Magneto be a pretentious author who's
- 00:24:02like an intellectual rival of Professor
- 00:24:05X we built a scale cross-section model
- 00:24:08of the Mansion so we could add the
- 00:24:10characters in with green screens and
- 00:24:11have these shots like in the Life
- 00:24:13Aquatic oh and our real secret weapon
- 00:24:16was that we used the actual Royal
- 00:24:18tenenbaum's house because at the time I
- 00:24:20lived like five minutes away in Harlem
- 00:24:22so the point of all this was to study a
- 00:24:25filmmaker that I love and actually try
- 00:24:27to figure out to the best of my ability
- 00:24:29is okay how would he actually make this
- 00:24:32movie and then of course the other point
- 00:24:35was to have fun with my friends this
- 00:24:38whole thing was a big collaboration my
- 00:24:41friend Kendra made the uniforms and also
- 00:24:43played Storm my sister has supervised
- 00:24:46the rest of the costumes and we had a
- 00:24:48big day finding all the pieces at
- 00:24:49various thrift stores my friend Zach
- 00:24:52played Wolverine and his brother Ben
- 00:24:53built the model for us and then the
- 00:24:56usual crew including original Chloe and
- 00:24:59dearly departed Jake played the rest of
- 00:25:01the characters we had a couple of fun
- 00:25:03frantic weekends running all over New
- 00:25:05York City filming it and if you'll allow
- 00:25:07me to get sentimental for a minute part
- 00:25:10of what depresses me about these AI
- 00:25:12videos is that they might discourage
- 00:25:14people from doing what I did all those
- 00:25:17years ago getting a group of friends
- 00:25:19together to make a fun low budget
- 00:25:22project if you had the budget and the
- 00:25:25time you could actually have done this
- 00:25:27without all of these tools but you
- 00:25:30wouldn't have because it would have been
- 00:25:32prohibitively expensive right but what
- 00:25:34you made you could make another way it's
- 00:25:36just you wouldn't have it's just too
- 00:25:37time consuming but now I think you told
- 00:25:40me when we were talking the other day
- 00:25:40these take you a couple of days to make
- 00:25:42at this point so Congress rats dude you
- 00:25:44made three Wes Anderson parody videos in
- 00:25:47one month you have officially killed
- 00:25:50this kind of thing forever no one is
- 00:25:53ever gonna make one again but beyond Wes
- 00:25:56Anderson parodies because honestly those
- 00:25:58should be over by now anyway I worry
- 00:26:01that young aspiring filmmakers will see
- 00:26:03these and choose to use AI instead of
- 00:26:06actually going outside and putting their
- 00:26:09hands on a camera and that to me is just
- 00:26:13depressing as hell the funny thing about
- 00:26:16all this AI talk is that really none of
- 00:26:20this stuff actually is artificial
- 00:26:22intelligence it's not thinking for
- 00:26:25itself it is incapable of coming up with
- 00:26:28new ideas
- 00:26:29this is machine learning it's large
- 00:26:32language models the idea behind each one
- 00:26:35of these programs is that they aggregate
- 00:26:37a ton of stuff that already exists and
- 00:26:40then regurgitate something similar so
- 00:26:43when you open mid-journey and tell it to
- 00:26:45put an image in a Wes Anderson movie it
- 00:26:48looks at a bunch of images of Wes
- 00:26:50Anderson movies and then does something
- 00:26:53that looks like an approximation of
- 00:26:55those the Curious Refuge guy says that
- 00:26:58this is the same as artists having
- 00:27:00influences that all artists borrow from
- 00:27:02other artists so I am definitely
- 00:27:06more in the camp of the whole like steel
- 00:27:09like an artist uh
- 00:27:11realm of thinking about creativity and
- 00:27:14that idea is essentially that all of us
- 00:27:16are pulling our creative ideas from
- 00:27:18other inspiration in our past we just
- 00:27:21don't as humans know off the top of our
- 00:27:25head where those sources are coming from
- 00:27:26which I think is a pretty astounding
- 00:27:29misunderstanding of what artistic
- 00:27:32influence actually is Artistic influence
- 00:27:35is Wes Anderson taking his love of Hal
- 00:27:38Ashby Francois truffaut and Jacques de
- 00:27:41me and processing them into a unique
- 00:27:44approach that expresses his own view of
- 00:27:46the world AI art is just a machine for
- 00:27:50plagiarizing existing art this guy says
- 00:27:53that AI is democratizing storytelling
- 00:27:57all of these tools are democratizing
- 00:27:58creativity and making it possible for
- 00:28:01anyone to be a filmmaker
- 00:28:03no I'm sorry but this is an insane take
- 00:28:07democratizing storytelling is what
- 00:28:10affordable filmmaking equipment did it's
- 00:28:12what like iPhones did it's what the
- 00:28:16internet did those things gave people
- 00:28:19outside of traditional structures
- 00:28:21without huge budgets and resources the
- 00:28:24tools to create films and a free
- 00:28:26platform with which to reach a wide
- 00:28:29audience arguing for AI filmmaking is
- 00:28:32saying that people no longer need talent
- 00:28:34or skill like by this logic why would
- 00:28:37you learn to play the violin when you
- 00:28:40can use AI to create a fake violin
- 00:28:43recording of the piece of music that you
- 00:28:45want to play the Curious Refuge website
- 00:28:48proudly says that they are quote
- 00:28:50empowering non-traditional artists which
- 00:28:54is hilarious to me because that is just
- 00:28:57another way of saying bad artists it's
- 00:29:00like a steakhouse saying we serve non
- 00:29:03traditional meals and then giving you a
- 00:29:06plate with a charred black hockey puck
- 00:29:08on it AI filmmaking is a grift it is a
- 00:29:12way to make something that looks
- 00:29:15professional without putting in any of
- 00:29:17the work to learn how to do it for real
- 00:29:20and without paying an actual cast or
- 00:29:23crew look I'm not generally one for
- 00:29:26criticizing other folks on YouTube or
- 00:29:28starting feuds and I wouldn't do it if I
- 00:29:32didn't think that this really truly
- 00:29:34genuinely sucks and if the Curious
- 00:29:38Refuge people take offense to my
- 00:29:39comments all I have to say is you
- 00:29:42shouldn't because you didn't really make
- 00:29:45those videos in that interview you say
- 00:29:47that you didn't even come up with the
- 00:29:49idea itself there is not a shred of
- 00:29:52personal expression or taste or Humanity
- 00:29:55in there I don't even know if this guy
- 00:29:57likes Wes Anderson movies this is a
- 00:30:00machine suggestion for what would be a
- 00:30:03video that would get views on the
- 00:30:05internet so I'm really only criticizing
- 00:30:08the work of a soulless program that is
- 00:30:10not alive
- 00:30:11and I'm fine with that after all there
- 00:30:15is a good chance that my video from
- 00:30:17eight years ago is one of the sources
- 00:30:19that the AI pulled from to create these
- 00:30:21new ones so if anyone is entitled to
- 00:30:24criticize it it's me
- 00:30:27and also Wes Anderson it should be clear
- 00:30:30by now that I'm not really a fan of
- 00:30:33using AI to produce creative work but
- 00:30:35this is not an entirely black and white
- 00:30:38situation see what we're calling AI is
- 00:30:41really just something trained on data
- 00:30:43sets to perform actions and that kind of
- 00:30:46thing has been in use for years and has
- 00:30:49some uses that I think are not just okay
- 00:30:52but genuinely positive there are several
- 00:30:55tools and programs like Adobe After
- 00:30:58Effects and Photoshop that meet this
- 00:31:00definition of AI like rotobrush a tool
- 00:31:04that detects objects and movement within
- 00:31:07a shot to automatically rotoscope are
- 00:31:10content aware fill which scans an image
- 00:31:13to remove a selected object and creates
- 00:31:15an extension of the background to fill
- 00:31:17that space this is still technically AI
- 00:31:21but here it's a tool meant to replace a
- 00:31:24tedious repetitive process it benefits
- 00:31:27create activity rather than replacing it
- 00:31:29giving more time for artists to make
- 00:31:32actual creative choices and this has
- 00:31:34been happening in the film industry for
- 00:31:36decades one of the major technical
- 00:31:38breakthroughs on the original Lord of
- 00:31:40the Rings trilogy was the software
- 00:31:43massive developed by Steven regolis at
- 00:31:46WETA digital which could create huge
- 00:31:48animated crowds with each character
- 00:31:51behaving individually with limited
- 00:31:53artificial intelligence instead of
- 00:31:55requiring visual effects artists to
- 00:31:57animate every single digital person one
- 00:32:00by one and more recently the
- 00:32:02spider-verse movies used machine
- 00:32:04learning tools to replicate details like
- 00:32:07cross hatching or bende dots on
- 00:32:09characters faces and in instances like
- 00:32:12these the tools are not replacing human
- 00:32:14jobs like across the spiderverse
- 00:32:16reportedly had the largest crew of
- 00:32:18people of any animated movie in history
- 00:32:21but again this is a very very slippery
- 00:32:25slope the slipperiest slope perhaps like
- 00:32:29a steep Mountain covered in ice and
- 00:32:31banana peels and KY Jelly with a whole
- 00:32:34bunch of spikes and wolves and
- 00:32:35spike-covered Wolves at the bottom what
- 00:32:38seemed like helpful tools used by
- 00:32:39talented artists can easily be abused by
- 00:32:43the executives at the top who want to
- 00:32:45increase profits it's the same kind of
- 00:32:47thing that happened with the rise of
- 00:32:49Robotics in the Auto industry and here
- 00:32:51we are arriving at a point where AI can
- 00:32:54and will start eliminating certain
- 00:32:57middle-class computer-based jobs in the
- 00:33:00past few years extensive research has
- 00:33:03been done into using AI to edit movie
- 00:33:05trailers the idea is that you feed a
- 00:33:09full movie into the software and it
- 00:33:11spits out a trailer based on its own
- 00:33:13learning of what kind of images and
- 00:33:16beats have been used in other trailers
- 00:33:18for successful films now this seems a
- 00:33:21lot more feasible than like creating a
- 00:33:23movie from scratch using Ai and you can
- 00:33:26argue that trailers aren't really art
- 00:33:29anyway they're merely marketing tools so
- 00:33:31who cares if they're automated other
- 00:33:34than you know the editors who make movie
- 00:33:37trailers and have jobs in that industry
- 00:33:39but the thought trailers is there's
- 00:33:42still Artistry in them AI never would
- 00:33:45have made the choice to edit the trailer
- 00:33:47for The Social Network to a girls choir
- 00:33:50cover of creep R to cut the trailer for
- 00:33:53a serious man around the repeated
- 00:33:56rhythmic slamming of a man's head
- 00:33:58against a wall these moments of actual
- 00:34:02Innovation the ones that create
- 00:34:03something that sticks with people for
- 00:34:05decades can only be done by real human
- 00:34:09creativity AI is improving all the time
- 00:34:12but at its very best you will only ever
- 00:34:15get serviceable imitations of mediocre
- 00:34:18products but the question then is
- 00:34:21do the people in charge
- 00:34:24care about that not to point fingers but
- 00:34:27plenty of successful mainstream movies
- 00:34:30are merely mediocre recycled products if
- 00:34:34a piece of software can create that
- 00:34:36automatically do the shareholders care
- 00:34:39about giving up the potential for an
- 00:34:42amazing Masterpiece the current writer's
- 00:34:45Guild of America strike has been going
- 00:34:46on for about two months now and one of
- 00:34:49the many issues the writers are striking
- 00:34:51over is AI and the question of whether
- 00:34:55Studios and production companies are
- 00:34:57going to try to use AI to replace human
- 00:35:00writers
- 00:35:01as in of course they're going to try and
- 00:35:04the writers obviously don't want that no
- 00:35:08one should want that people who run
- 00:35:10movie studios the David zazlabs of the
- 00:35:13world whose primary motives are usually
- 00:35:15to increase profits and please
- 00:35:17shareholders and drive up stock prices
- 00:35:19are always looking for ways to eliminate
- 00:35:22risk the major reason that the film
- 00:35:24industry has leaned so hard into
- 00:35:26franchises and IP is that making movies
- 00:35:29and TV based on familiar properties
- 00:35:32seems safer than an unknown original
- 00:35:35idea and so you can see to them the
- 00:35:39appeal of AI the whole idea of recycling
- 00:35:42and regurgitating existing things that
- 00:35:44have already proven commercially
- 00:35:45successful sounds great what if you no
- 00:35:48longer had to deal with temperamental
- 00:35:50artists with their own perspectives who
- 00:35:53might make choices that turn out to be
- 00:35:55divisive after all how is this really
- 00:35:58all that different from Disney's ongoing
- 00:36:00line of live action remakes of their
- 00:36:03animated movies the great irony of this
- 00:36:06whole situation is that AI could also
- 00:36:09replace the people at the top it was
- 00:36:12always the job of Studio Executives to
- 00:36:14decide what projects would get made they
- 00:36:17were expected to have good business
- 00:36:19sense like to know how best to spend
- 00:36:22their budget but also good taste so they
- 00:36:26could tell what might make good movies
- 00:36:28that would resonate with audiences and
- 00:36:30then make a profit but in recent years
- 00:36:33new AI software has been evolving that
- 00:36:36can theoretically determine how movies
- 00:36:39will perform commercially and what
- 00:36:42projects should be greenlit in 2020
- 00:36:45Warner Brothers signed a deal with a
- 00:36:47company called synolytic to use their
- 00:36:50Predictive Analytics to help guide
- 00:36:52decision making about what projects to
- 00:36:55Green Light it can apparently determine
- 00:36:57the monetary value of different movie
- 00:36:59stars in different International
- 00:37:01territories to predict how a movie will
- 00:37:04will perform so hey maybe the people we
- 00:37:07should really be worrying about are
- 00:37:09those poor Executives with their 30
- 00:37:12million dollar salaries
- 00:37:14I hope they're gonna be okay the weird
- 00:37:17thing about making a video like this is
- 00:37:19that the story is evolving on a daily
- 00:37:22basis like I was almost done writing
- 00:37:25this and then the news broke that secret
- 00:37:27Invasion the new Marvel show on Disney
- 00:37:30plus used AI to create its opening title
- 00:37:33sequence people immediately freaked out
- 00:37:36since it seemed like what we were afraid
- 00:37:38of was happening sooner than we expected
- 00:37:40and here it was the biggest Studio on
- 00:37:43the planet doing it but it's more
- 00:37:46complicated than that
- 00:37:48see method Studios the VFX company that
- 00:37:51designed the sequence apparently did
- 00:37:54employ a team of designers and animators
- 00:37:56and they claimed they used AI simply as
- 00:37:59a tool in the process not as a means of
- 00:38:02replacing skilled human workers without
- 00:38:05knowing the step-by-step process
- 00:38:08I guess we have to trust them on this
- 00:38:10the director of the show is less helpful
- 00:38:13saying that he doesn't really understand
- 00:38:15how the AI process works look the fact
- 00:38:19is that this AI stuff is here and it is
- 00:38:23not going away and if we trust the
- 00:38:25people at method Studios this does seem
- 00:38:28like the ideal implementation of the
- 00:38:30technology as merely another tool that
- 00:38:33skilled artists can use in their work
- 00:38:36but Lucy most excited about AI are not
- 00:38:40actually artists themselves they are the
- 00:38:43tech Bros who pay for a blue check mark
- 00:38:46on Twitter who view AI art as a win over
- 00:38:50those pretentious artists and their
- 00:38:53dream is of a future where it can make
- 00:38:55movies tailored to their exact
- 00:38:57specifications not like the [ __ ]
- 00:38:59Hollywood is making now they love the
- 00:39:02idea of using AI for filmmaking because
- 00:39:05they don't actually have any Talent OR
- 00:39:08skill for them AI is like a cheat code
- 00:39:12that allows them to seem like actual
- 00:39:15artists without doing any actual work
- 00:39:18the moral of this story is that AI art
- 00:39:22sucks unless it's the Steven Spielberg
- 00:39:24film AI artificial intelligence which is
- 00:39:27a masterpiece and everyone should go
- 00:39:29watch that instead of shitty plagiarized
- 00:39:31videos made by stupid pieces of software
- 00:39:33see the thing about AI art is that it
- 00:39:37isn't really art at all art by its very
- 00:39:41definition has to express some kind of
- 00:39:44human expression this
- 00:39:47stuff generated by AI deserves a label
- 00:39:51that many of you know I really truly
- 00:39:54hate so much
- 00:39:56this
- 00:39:58is content something utterly disposable
- 00:40:01something meaningless
- 00:40:03content is such a nebulous term because
- 00:40:07it means everything and nothing Patrick
- 00:40:11before we devolve into the most nebulous
- 00:40:14topic possible
- 00:40:15maybe we could get in a word from our

- 00:45:56content when used to describe creative
- 00:45:58work I don't like it and I've been
- 00:46:00threatening for years to make a video
- 00:46:01about why I
- 00:46:03don't like calling things content and um
- 00:46:06and I finally reached the point where I
- 00:46:07was like let's do it now is the time we
- 00:46:11got we gotta gotta get it out there I
- 00:46:13can't wait any longer and uh yeah I
- 00:46:16think it's gonna be a fun one it's gonna
- 00:46:17be a bit different than usual it's not
- 00:46:19you know about like specific movies uh
- 00:46:22and the script is almost done which is
- 00:46:24great
- 00:46:25um yeah these we've got like a loose
- 00:46:28maybe kind of sort of series forming the
- 00:46:31like a few videos we're working on are
- 00:46:33all like thematically connected and uh
- 00:46:36like this AI one this is way more
- 00:46:37topical than we ever really get with the
- 00:46:40video so I kept getting stressed out
- 00:46:41while working on it being like
- 00:46:43is this still going to be relevant by
- 00:46:46the time uh the video is done will it be
- 00:46:48old news by then and um no AI is still
- 00:46:51constantly in the news so I I think I
- 00:46:54think it's still relevant um I hope you
- 00:46:55you enjoyed it um I wish I could have
- 00:46:58tied in stuff about the new Mission
- 00:46:59Impossible movie uh because
- 00:47:01that is uh that has that also has a big
- 00:47:04beef with AI so anyway
