00:00:01
hi everyone it's me Lauren staer and I'm
00:00:04
excited to give you guys a tour of my
00:00:05
Minecraft world titled volume city which
00:00:09
I designed to teach fifth grade students
00:00:11
how to calculate and apply the concept
00:00:13
of volume in a fun and Hands-On way so
00:00:17
the
00:00:18
object the objective of this lesson is
00:00:20
for students to create various
00:00:22
structures in Minecraft while
00:00:23
calculating the volume of their designs
00:00:25
through this activity students practice
00:00:27
using volume formula length times width
00:00:30
time height and apply their knowledge by
00:00:32
constructing buildings that represent
00:00:33
real world
00:00:34
structures so let's start with what I
00:00:38
built we're going to start with the
00:00:39
entrance actually to volume City so I
00:00:42
just made like a little structure here
00:00:44
as like the
00:00:46
Gateway um so this is the entrance it's
00:00:50
got a little welcome flag saying make
00:00:52
sure to check out the city
00:00:56
hall um I'll actually show you the whole
00:01:00
um how huge this build was um including
00:01:05
like the different things so this is a
00:01:09
300 by 300 fenon area to define the
00:01:14
boundaries of the city so you'll see
00:01:16
there are little um there is the fencing
00:01:21
area you'll see the um five block
00:01:25
wide um road that is around the inside
00:01:29
edges of the fenced in area or where the
00:01:32
city is
00:01:35
sitting running along the perimeter with
00:01:37
a Central Road
00:01:39
dividing the six available building
00:01:44
plots in the middle here so it's this
00:01:46
huge Middle Road that's lit
00:01:49
up each plot or the boxed in area so
00:01:53
there's different there's three
00:01:54
different boxes on this side and three
00:01:56
on this side each box in area is a 90 by
00:02:01
135
00:02:02
block um cubic units to the left of the
00:02:07
entrance so if I go back down let me
00:02:09
fall down here for a little
00:02:13
bit is the mayor's house so along with
00:02:17
building the city the students are going
00:02:19
to be um kind of role playing as
00:02:23
Builders and I'm going to be the mayor
00:02:26
of the city so this is actually the
00:02:28
mayor's house and I also gave a little
00:02:31
bit of information that says the frame
00:02:32
of the house is 11x 10 by um 11 by 4X 10
00:02:37
sorry cubic units so if the students
00:02:40
want to compare that to their own builds
00:02:42
later in the day they can easily look at
00:02:45
it um I also included a little fun
00:02:50
activity I said not including the roof
00:02:52
that is and it's bonus for students who
00:02:55
figure that
00:02:56
out so this is the Mar's house that I
00:02:59
created
00:03:01
um and I gave you the dimensions
00:03:03
earlier as you can see you can go on in
00:03:06
and it's actually um fully designed with
00:03:09
the library and there's the chimney goes
00:03:12
up
00:03:13
through and this is the area so the
00:03:16
students can look at different building
00:03:18
techniques that I used see if they want
00:03:20
to add them like the um
00:03:23
window um attachments using like the
00:03:27
trap doors and stuff so they can do that
00:03:30
um for design they can also look at how
00:03:33
I
00:03:34
built the
00:03:36
chimney different things like that for
00:03:39
after they've built their um
00:03:42
buildings moving
00:03:44
on um so I so I told you about the sign
00:03:48
Dimensions um at the opposite end so way
00:03:52
on the other side of the city so going
00:03:55
through the entrance there's our little
00:03:57
lamp post so that it's not dark because
00:04:00
I did put it as um a day and night cycle
00:04:04
because I wanted it to be an actual City
00:04:05
not just like an empty empty space um as
00:04:09
we go quickly through the main
00:04:12
road and get a little glimpse of that
00:04:14
I'll be talking about each of the areas
00:04:15
in a little bit but I'm just going to
00:04:18
kind of zoom on over to the City
00:04:24
Hall so at the opposite end of the city
00:04:27
I built a city hall which serves as the
00:04:29
central
00:04:31
Hub um inside the city hall we'll go
00:04:33
inside first then I'll talk about like
00:04:35
the different things on the outside so
00:04:36
now we're
00:04:37
here go
00:04:40
inside um there is a small Museum over
00:04:46
here it's not very well lit up I'll have
00:04:48
to add that later but this is the help
00:04:50
desk this is the most important part of
00:04:53
it um where students will come once they
00:04:55
have their assignment I'll be the one
00:04:57
sitting here cuz I will be the mayor I'm
00:04:59
going to
00:05:01
um work like here so when students come
00:05:05
in through the door they can see me ask
00:05:07
me questions different things like that
00:05:11
um other than the help desk and the
00:05:16
museum there's this huge library that
00:05:19
they can um just chill at and I created
00:05:22
different water feature to show that it
00:05:25
is possible for my students to make it
00:05:27
um it's just a basic one it's not very
00:05:29
very crafty and then there's also like a
00:05:32
lounge area so the kids can like see
00:05:35
what it is or they can discuss things
00:05:36
with their groups here so this is kind
00:05:38
of just like a catchall where students
00:05:41
can come ask me questions they can hang
00:05:43
out at the museum at the little um rest
00:05:46
areas they can talk and come up with
00:05:49
ideas if they don't want to do it at the
00:05:52
build
00:05:53
sites
00:05:56
um uh just outside of the city hall it's
00:05:59
take a little bit of a journey I'll
00:06:01
close the door cuz that's a little odd I
00:06:03
forgot to close it before um this isn't
00:06:06
very well lit up I just noticed that uh
00:06:10
let me see put
00:06:15
a we'll put one out here for now I will
00:06:19
do something better with it
00:06:22
later obviously beforehand um this is
00:06:26
the job board so it's obviously it says
00:06:28
see help ask for details so it's another
00:06:31
reminder for
00:06:33
students um the job board is just
00:06:37
listing all six of the available
00:06:39
projects the students can choose from
00:06:41
cuz I wanted to make this like a bit
00:06:43
more like roleplay so I obviously got
00:06:45
like different signs for all of the
00:06:47
areas so the first one is the post
00:06:49
office I and I gave a little joke like
00:06:52
please hurry up there's too much mail
00:06:54
there's the pool
00:06:55
area the doctor's
00:06:58
office the
00:07:00
School the library and to create a store
00:07:05
so they'll come over here all the
00:07:06
students will gather over here they'll
00:07:08
look at the um job board they'll split
00:07:10
into groups and then they will come back
00:07:13
over to the help desk and ask me
00:07:16
questions and also to team up I'll have
00:07:19
a book that I can write in that will go
00:07:21
for each of the groups and I'll keep
00:07:23
that there at the help desk as a
00:07:25
reminder to so it'll be um a little bit
00:07:30
more interesting students can use that
00:07:31
as like a writing time and um different
00:07:35
Communications and stuff like
00:07:37
that so after we go through the job
00:07:41
boards um what else what else what else
00:07:44
I had other things let me
00:07:48
see um so this AC sorry this
00:07:53
activity um connects to the lesson
00:07:56
objectives by allowing students to apply
00:07:59
the volume formula as they're creating
00:08:02
it their
00:08:04
buildings um to real world structures
00:08:07
like a doctor's office post office
00:08:10
libraries they can work
00:08:12
collaborative collaboratively or
00:08:14
independently to design and build their
00:08:16
structures I have 12
00:08:18
students so and there's six spots they
00:08:21
can easily do groups of three groups of
00:08:23
four groups of two just pairs or just by
00:08:28
themselves um
00:08:30
and this also develops problem solving
00:08:32
skills while addressing any challenges
00:08:34
they encounter during the design process
00:08:37
so not only are they building using
00:08:39
volume the actual buildings they're also
00:08:42
going to be designing and
00:08:45
decorating before students begin that
00:08:47
building I'll obviously review the
00:08:49
formula for volume and connect it to
00:08:51
real life
00:08:53
applications we'll also discuss conduct
00:08:56
expectations in Minecraft such as you
00:08:58
know griefing
00:09:01
um teamwork respecting others work and
00:09:03
practicing good digital
00:09:07
citizenship um students will then choose
00:09:09
a plot and use the materials provided to
00:09:11
create their assigned structure we'll
00:09:12
talk about different blocks um ways to
00:09:15
get new blocks different things like
00:09:19
that um went too
00:09:24
far um after they built their structures
00:09:27
and it's been approved by the mayor a me
00:09:30
um then they can be in working on the
00:09:32
decorating and design so I don't want
00:09:33
them just focusing on the design aspect
00:09:36
I want them
00:09:37
to do the volume portion first and then
00:09:41
focus on
00:09:43
decorating so to support all Learners
00:09:46
I've built in a variety of
00:09:49
differentiation strategies for
00:09:50
struggling Learners I'll provide a word
00:09:52
bank with key terms and step-by-step
00:09:56
instructions um I'll also allow them to
00:09:59
work with the partner or additional
00:10:00
support so if they want help from like
00:10:02
the aid or
00:10:04
myself or an older student sometimes we
00:10:07
have older students come over to help um
00:10:09
that's perfectly allowed for gifted
00:10:11
Learners I'll offer extension activities
00:10:13
such as designing more complex
00:10:14
structures or calculating the volumes of
00:10:17
irregular shapes they can also explore
00:10:19
added adding details like Redstone poed
00:10:22
mechanisms for an added
00:10:24
challenge um there's also like um using
00:10:27
iron doors which can only be opened by
00:10:29
using buttons they can just do different
00:10:31
things like that adding like different
00:10:34
challenges instead of like a
00:10:38
um Regular rectangular prism as their um
00:10:42
shape they could do different structures
00:10:44
like how I have the city hall split up
00:10:48
into split up and then connected as um
00:10:52
one structure so I did the volume for
00:10:55
two different shapes and then connected
00:10:57
them and then obviously designed more on
00:10:59
top of it for that
00:11:02
design um now let's walk through some of
00:11:06
the plot so I briefly walked around them
00:11:08
but I didn't exactly talk about what
00:11:10
they would be doing so this is the post
00:11:12
office I've kind of walked around the
00:11:14
sign the whole time I have a sign for
00:11:16
each of the areas kind of already
00:11:18
plotted out that there's no real
00:11:20
difference in all honesty each plot is a
00:11:24
90 by
00:11:26
135 I counted them all out um
00:11:30
but each plot does have two chests one
00:11:34
is for building
00:11:36
materials and one is specifically for
00:11:39
decorations I also make sure to give the
00:11:41
memo um to go to the City Hall if there
00:11:43
is more if needed so you go inside
00:11:46
there's all types of different things
00:11:47
they could use for decorations as well
00:11:50
as um building materials the one thing I
00:11:52
really did like I um played around with
00:11:56
is the design guide
00:11:59
so if you take the book that is the
00:12:02
design guide you put it in your
00:12:04
inventory and you um open it up I wrote
00:12:07
in the different dimensions for the
00:12:09
build and then I also gave them the
00:12:12
reminder so each of the rooms will have
00:12:15
the um plots I mean sorry will have them
00:12:19
um along with the regular building
00:12:27
materials um so each post has their sign
00:12:30
post and
00:12:34
um their different things they're over
00:12:36
here there's the pool area I did start
00:12:39
it but that's
00:12:42
intentional um so they'll be change they
00:12:44
they'll have a a um specific
00:12:48
base because not only can you do um
00:12:50
length times width times height you can
00:12:53
also do base times height or in this
00:12:56
case I guess it would be um depth but um
00:13:00
they're going to be doing the pool but
00:13:01
they're going to be changing up the
00:13:03
depth of the pool as well as other
00:13:07
measurements to make it a little bit
00:13:09
different a little bit harder in instead
00:13:12
of just um the same type of thing copy
00:13:15
and pasted for each build so there are
00:13:17
some
00:13:19
differences um just like let me see if I
00:13:21
can get a little quicker here just like
00:13:24
over here at the doctor's office so the
00:13:28
the for the roleplay part I'll be
00:13:30
discussing that they started building it
00:13:33
but then there was issues with um
00:13:36
getting materials and different things
00:13:37
so there's like a mix up of materials
00:13:40
and it's like
00:13:41
started there's like the doctor's office
00:13:46
the um sign for it so there are some
00:13:50
like roleplay aspects that I added so
00:13:52
that it would be more interesting for
00:13:53
the
00:13:55
students um as the students complete
00:13:57
their builds they will present their
00:13:59
final structures and explain their
00:14:01
thought processes including
00:14:04
um how they appli the volume formula and
00:14:08
any challenges that they encountered
00:14:09
along the way whether that be with the
00:14:11
math itself the building or
00:14:13
communication with their
00:14:17
team um along the way so to conclude the
00:14:21
lesson students will participate in a
00:14:23
group reflection where they discuss
00:14:25
their designs compare their calculations
00:14:28
and share any insight they gain during
00:14:29
the activity this process allows them to
00:14:31
develop critical thinking and problem
00:14:35
solving skills while reinforcing their
00:14:36
understanding of volume by incorporating
00:14:39
Minecraft into this lesson students not
00:14:41
only practice volume calculations but
00:14:43
also develop additional skills such as
00:14:46
um time management creativity
00:14:48
collaboration and digital citizenship
00:14:50
volume City transforms abstract M
00:14:54
mathematical Concepts into Hands-On
00:14:56
engaging experiences that resonate with
00:14:58
learners at all
00:15:00
abilities so um thanks for coming guys
00:15:04
thanks for taking this tour of volume
00:15:05
City with me I'm looking forward to see
00:15:07
how my students um use their creativity
00:15:10
and their mathematical knowledge to
00:15:13
bring their structures to
00:15:14
life and that's pretty much
00:15:17
it bye
