00:00:00
Welcome to the first My-Progression debate.
00:00:04
The hot topic today is Homework.
00:00:07
Should we set it?
00:00:09
How much should the students be expected to
do?
00:00:12
And at what age should it start?
00:00:14
There are many different opinions on the setting
of homework and these views may vary greatly
00:00:19
depending on who you are speaking to.
00:00:21
Now full honesty We don't have the answers!
00:00:25
But we will go through the pros and cons in
this video.
00:00:34
I’m Natalie from My-Progression and we would
love to hear your thoughts on homework in
00:00:42
the comments below and whilst you’re there
like and subscribe to keep hearing more from
00:00:47
My-Progression.
00:00:48
And have a little click on the bell icon so
that you'll be informed when future videos
00:00:53
come out.
00:00:54
Now before we get into this… let’s make
sure we all know the basics of homework.
00:00:59
To get us on the same page homework is work
that we ask the children to complete at home
00:01:04
in a set amount of time.
00:01:07
Children are often given homework from an
early age such as Reception and this may be
00:01:12
in the form of learning phonics or words to
support early reading.
00:01:17
Parents or carers have to obviously be involved
to support young children in their learning.
00:01:23
Historically the Government advised that secondary
school children should do two and a half hours
00:01:28
of homework per night but that guidance was
scrapped in 2012 and it's now up to schools
00:01:34
to decide how much to set.
00:01:37
Your school policy will guide you and the
parents as to the expectations.
00:01:43
Ofsted explained the change by saying: “For
homework it is up to individual schools to
00:01:48
decide whether it is age-appropriate and in
line with their policy.
00:01:53
Inspectors do not assess homework as part
of inspections.”
00:01:57
This was a u-turn as they had previously placed
much more emphasis on homework.
00:02:04
Now on to the debate:
I will be remaining neutral in this debate
00:02:10
I will be arguing for.
00:02:13
And I will be arguing against.
00:02:16
Setting homework can be a great way of asking
children to consolidate their learning from
00:02:20
class through practice of something or you
could even ask the children to use and apply
00:02:26
their knowledge to another piece of work.
00:02:29
You can then assess their understanding of
learning through the marking of the homework.
00:02:33
Which I think sounds like a great idea right?
00:02:36
Yeah but the downside the setting of homework
can add to an already heavy workload in terms
00:02:43
of marking I mean haven’t we got enough
to do?
00:02:46
You can’t always be sure that all pupils
will complete work set either.
00:02:50
Well this could help you gain an insight into
your pupils and their home circumstances
00:02:54
Hussain says: "I couldn’t complete my homework
because I was at my grandparents’ house
00:02:59
all week because both mum and dad were at
work and I needed some help.”
00:03:02
Or Jasmine says: "My sister is ill in hospital
and we were there all weekend and so I couldn’t
00:03:09
complete my homework"
We have to see past the tick on the spreadsheet
00:03:14
sometimes don’t we need to realise there
are bigger problems for some children.
00:03:19
You may also deal with the consistent fail
to produce homework that was me and the ‘don’t
00:03:25
care’ attitude.
00:03:26
How do we deal with that?
00:03:28
Maybe those children stay in to complete the
work?
00:03:31
It’s important to manage attitudes and encourage
a positive view on learning outside of the
00:03:38
classroom.
00:03:39
This is important.
00:03:40
Hang on so this means that the children who
are already struggling with a difficult home
00:03:44
life get penalised and judged at school as
well?
00:03:47
No it’s identifying who needs support and
where there shouldn’t be any judgement.
00:03:53
But you cannot deny that some of the reasons
a child can’t complete their homework or
00:03:57
do it to a high standard is out of their control!
00:04:01
In some cases we may have a child who is fully
supported and produces homework to an excellent
00:04:07
standard but this does not reflect their ability
in class.
00:04:12
On delving into the situation there is a great
deal of support at home and so work is accurate
00:04:18
but is it the child’s work?
00:04:21
However any support and extra teaching from
home may just be an excellent way of consolidating
00:04:27
learning.
00:04:28
Parents can find homework informative and
helpful as they are then aware of what their
00:04:33
child is learning they can see how things
are done by what methods and what terminologies
00:04:38
are used in various subjects.
00:04:42
Homework allows a parent to assess how their
child is coping with work they are doing in
00:04:46
school and then support them.
00:04:48
And what about busy working parents who just
don’t have a lot of free time in the evening.
00:04:54
Completing homework is reported by many parents
to be stressful time-consuming and upsetting!
00:05:00
There are parents who only have a couple of
hours to spend with their child during the
00:05:05
week and they might want to use that time
doing something enjoyable or relaxing with
00:05:10
their child.
00:05:11
Now my little girl is not at this stage of
life yet but friends inform me that there
00:05:15
can be tears and tantrums over the completion
of homework.
00:05:19
If you’re a parent you will no doubt have
your own experience and opinions about this!
00:05:26
Some parents are able to fully invest time
and support their child with homework but
00:05:30
some parents may not be able to do this for
many reasons work commitment time constraints
00:05:36
children being looked after by wrap-around
clubs or child-minders.
00:05:40
It sounds like this may cause stress to the
child and the parents and it means some will
00:05:45
have a better output than others.
00:05:47
It could but there’s always going to be
some level of challenge in life doesn’t
00:05:53
mean we don’t do something!
00:05:55
Most children do not relish the thought of
doing homework do they?
00:06:01
Not all the time however as the children progress
through the key stages they may change their
00:06:07
opinion and see the value in doing extra work
to help them in their studies.
00:06:12
Some will always produce homework and some
never will.
00:06:16
Clearly homework is a challenging part of
a teacher's role.
00:06:20
Right it’s time for closing statements.
00:06:24
Informs parents of learning at school and
is one way of communicating what is going
00:06:28
on in the classroom.
00:06:30
This can educate parents too.
00:06:32
Teachers can assess the pupils’ understanding
of learning in class and identify issues as
00:06:37
they arise or move learning forward.
00:06:40
It acts to consolidate school learning for
the pupil outside of the classroom to practice
00:06:44
what they have learned and even extend their
knowledge and understanding.
00:06:49
It forms good study ethics and creates a routine
of work.
00:06:52
Later this can be seen as important time management
skills when studying at a high level.
00:06:57
It can promote self-learning and self-study
and the pupil gains self-confidence and independence
00:07:04
in the learning.
00:07:06
Homework can promote critical thinking and
problem solving as challenges will make the
00:07:10
student resourceful and even creative in their
attack of their independent work at home.
00:07:17
Homework can boost memory retention and the
practice or extension of a skill will reinforce
00:07:22
learning.
00:07:23
It allows for revision of topics as well as
consolidation of work.
00:07:28
Homework allows the child to build confidence
independence initiative and resilience and
00:07:34
this will further support exam-taking in the
future.
00:07:38
So why would we not encourage the use homework?
00:07:42
Right.
00:07:44
Now for the cons.
00:07:47
Homework creates an extremely long day for
a pupil is this necessary?
00:07:51
It’s about the same working length of an
adult.
00:07:55
Shouldn’t we let kids be kids!
00:07:58
As any parent will know homework can cause
a great deal of stress not only for them but
00:08:03
for the child.
00:08:05
Homework can be time-consuming and therefore
impact on a child’s free time.
00:08:11
Pupils are probably tired and feel stressed
at the thought of having to complete further
00:08:15
work at home after a full day at school and
therefore demotivated in their attitude to
00:08:22
learning.
00:08:23
Homework that needs parental support can identify
the social gap between family situations and
00:08:29
massively increase the gap.
00:08:32
Some will have a huge advantage and then how
do you catch those that don’t?
00:08:37
Panic over not doing it or falling behind
can lead to absenteeism.
00:08:42
And this can create issues between parents.
00:08:44
For example Molly is at Dad’s house over
the weekend and he wants quality time with
00:08:49
his daughter so homework is unimportant.
00:08:53
Mum then has to play bad cop and make Molly
complete homework on returning.
00:08:58
And can a teacher be sure that the pupil completed
the work rather than lots of support from
00:09:02
another adult?
00:09:04
You could take that time spent marking homework
and use it to bridge the gap between those
00:09:08
that are struggling and those that are achieving.
00:09:11
This is the big one: There is little evidence
to support the impact of homework on attainment.
00:09:18
So how can we as educators make homework manageable
for ourselves as well as the pupils?
00:09:26
First of all Homework set needs to be relevant.
00:09:31
There is little point in setting homework
on long division when you have been teaching
00:09:36
data handling!
00:09:38
Children complain to parents that they haven’t
done this in class and have no idea what to
00:09:43
do!
00:09:44
Quite rightly so.
00:09:46
Teach it use it cement it.
00:09:50
Homework is a good way to cement that knowledge
by going over the topic again.
00:09:56
Make sure that a good explanation is given
with an example if possible.
00:10:00
Give guidance to the pupil a bit like success
criteria for them to aim towards.
00:10:06
If using a worksheet from an education site
make sure it is in line with your teaching
00:10:10
methods and that you have checked it and the
children will be able to complete it.
00:10:16
Set your children up to succeed at home!
00:10:19
Think carefully about your workload is homework
going to support your next teaching steps
00:10:27
or just create marking?
00:10:30
Can you self-mark as a class?
00:10:33
Keep a homework folder and make sure you can
reuse or adapt for other classes.
00:10:39
The hard work initially can support future
years of teaching.
00:10:43
Perhaps your school has bought into online
homework programs which are also marked.
00:10:49
It is then your responsibility to look at
the data and see how a child is performing.
00:10:54
This can inform teaching and you can address
issues as well as give you the confidence
00:10:59
that children are getting it!
00:11:02
You may set a project for homework which may
last over a number of weeks this can be a
00:11:07
motivating way of learning for the children
as well as give the child time to complete
00:11:12
the project.
00:11:13
It may be an open project and the child can
present the task however they want to a poster
00:11:19
PowerPoint presentation a model or an essay.
00:11:24
Time needs to be given to evaluate projects
in class rather than being ignored and no
00:11:29
value being placed on the work done.
00:11:33
Despite the repeal of the 2.5-hour rule some
teachers still go for more is better.
00:11:39
Can you make homework small and impactful?
00:11:44
Instead of reading two chapters of Romeo and
Juliet could they study and fully understand
00:11:50
two pages!
00:11:52
Can you give the kids a choice?
00:11:55
We’re more inclined to do something if we’ve
been part of the decision-making process.
00:12:00
You can give a few options of what homework
to complete and the class can vote on what
00:12:04
they want to do.
00:12:05
This means they are actively voting to do
homework.
00:12:10
Sometimes due to circumstances you may not
set homework.
00:12:13
It may be you know the class has a lot on
or you do too like parents' evenings or report
00:12:20
writing so you have to make that professional
decision.
00:12:24
You may need to check with your line manager
or the policy.
00:12:28
The argument for and against homework will
continue forevermore!
00:12:32
As educators we are all invested in maximising
our pupils learning.
00:12:37
We’re united by wanting them to do the best.
00:12:40
Whether homework is the right or the wrong
answer if we continue to push ourselves into
00:12:45
creating engaging learning experiences then
we all win!
00:12:50
I hope that this has been helpful to you.
00:12:54
We would love to hear from you about how you
manage homework any tips or ideas.
