MCN let me start by saying thank you
  • 00:06:22
thank you for your Civic leadership to
  • 00:06:24
    make the sustainable development goals
  • 00:06:26
and unai principles reality the world
  • 00:06:30
    needs your
  • 00:06:32
leadership exactly two decades ago in
  • 00:06:35
August 2004 I was moving into my first
  • 00:06:39
dorm room at brandise University near
  • 00:06:41
Boston I had no idea what to expect a
  • 00:06:45
mix of fear nervousness and enthusiasm
  • 00:06:49
catapulted me through that dorm room
  • 00:06:51
door at the time I actually felt
  • 00:06:55
lonely I thought about four years of
  • 00:06:57
high school in which I felt like an
  • 00:06:59
    Outsider and wondered if my
  • 00:07:01
    undergraduate experience would be
  • 00:07:03
another lonely 4 years for any of you
  • 00:07:06
who are introverts like me you may know
  • 00:07:09
this feeling I was also disillusioned
  • 00:07:12
    with a fundamentally unjust World
  • 00:07:15
sitting alone I wondered why am I here
  • 00:07:19
why are we here what is our purpose I
  • 00:07:22
certainly hadn't found mine yet but I
  • 00:07:26
    drew Hope from two sources
  • 00:07:30
    community and
  • 00:07:32
    education community and
  • 00:07:35
Education First on community I took the
  • 00:07:37
leap to reach out of my comfort zone and
  • 00:07:40
build friendships on campus and we ended
  • 00:07:42
up co-founding MCN in our dorm rooms our
  • 00:07:45
first social impact events were very
  • 00:07:48
small we struggled to get people to show
  • 00:07:50
up if you ever wonder if your small acts
  • 00:07:54
make a difference you should know that
  • 00:07:55
you the thousands of Millennium fellows
  • 00:07:58
convening together to today that this
  • 00:08:01
program started over a decade ago with
  • 00:08:03
an inaugural class of just 11 Millennium
  • 00:08:08
    fellows change often starts
  • 00:08:13
small on education Millennium fellows I
  • 00:08:16
    learned that education happens both
  • 00:08:18
inside and outside the classroom I read
  • 00:08:21
two books as an undergraduate that
  • 00:08:23
changed my life the book mountains
  • 00:08:25
Beyond mountains told me the story of
  • 00:08:27
Paul Farmer who stole Medical flies from
  • 00:08:29
    Harvard brought them to Haiti
  • 00:08:31
volunteered and became a doctor working
  • 00:08:34
for 35 years in a dozen countries to
  • 00:08:37
help shape the movement for Public
  • 00:08:39
Health Equity I then read the end of
  • 00:08:41
poverty by The Economist Jeffrey Sachs
  • 00:08:44
at the End of This Book was a checklist
  • 00:08:46
eight steps every person could take
  • 00:08:48
locally to do their part to make the
  • 00:08:50
global goals reality reaching out beyond
  • 00:08:54
the classroom gave these books special
  • 00:08:56
meaning friends and I reached out to
  • 00:08:58
these leaders I mentioned and learned
  • 00:09:01
how to build relationships and networks
  • 00:09:03
    for
  • 00:09:04
    Progress the combination of community
  • 00:09:07
    and education and action completely
  • 00:09:09
Chang the course of my life knowing how
  • 00:09:13
difficult it can be and how lonely it
  • 00:09:16
can be to try and make a difference we
  • 00:09:19
want to ensure every Millennium fellow
  • 00:09:21
has access to community and experiential
  • 00:09:24
education to support your own Civic

events to join every year I absolutely
  • 00:12:57

  • 00:13:00

Wyatt I'm the chief of Education

    Outreach in the United Nations
  • 00:13:09
    Department of Global
  • 00:13:11
    Communications I oversee the United
  • 00:13:13
    Nations academic impact initiative and

    worldwide we work with those
  • 00:13:27
    universities to align their teaching
  • 00:13:30
    their research and their Community
  • 00:13:33
    engagement and Partnerships with the
  • 00:13:35
    sustainable development goals and with
  • 00:13:38
the principles of the United Nations and
  • 00:13:41
we hope that each of you will go to your
  • 00:13:44
    University administrations and if they
  • 00:13:47
don't already belong to the UNA we hope
  • 00:13:50
that you will convince them through the
  • 00:13:52
powers of your influence and energy to
  • 00:13:55
join the unai and Sam will share that
  • 00:13:59
information with you I just want to
  • 00:14:02
briefly touch on why this partnership is
  • 00:14:06
so important not only to me personally
  • 00:14:09
and our team but to the United Nations
  • 00:14:13
    itself we partnered in
  • 00:14:16
    2018 with the Millennium Fellowship
  • 00:14:19
which is part of the Millennium campus
  • 00:14:21
Network and we did this because we
  • 00:14:24
    recognized that this unique initiative
  • 00:14:27
it unlocks and it unleashes the power
  • 00:14:31
the energy the creative Force the
  • 00:14:34
passion the vision and the leadership of
  • 00:14:38
young burining scholars you are the
  • 00:14:42
leaders of the future and that is why we
  • 00:14:45
are in this game with you we support you
  • 00:14:49
we are cheering for you we want you to
  • 00:14:51

  • 00:14:54
place at the table a millennium
  • 00:14:57
    Fellowship initi itive is a
  • 00:14:59
manifestation and a demonstration of the
  • 00:15:02
    United Nations commitment to young
  • 00:15:05
people across the globe so I
  • 00:15:08
congratulate each and every one of you
  • 00:15:11
all 4,000 plus Millennium fellows from
  • 00:15:15
over 280 campuses in over 48 Nations
  • 00:15:20
this is just an incredible class of
  • 00:15:24
    2024
  • 00:15:26
friends as the Secretary General of the
  • 00:15:28
US has recently noted we're living in
  • 00:15:31
    extremely difficult times conflicts are
  • 00:15:34
raging tensions are rising our planet is
  • 00:15:37
burning humanitarian needs are at an
  • 00:15:40
all-time high human rights are under
  • 00:15:43
    Relentless assault hate speech
  • 00:15:46
    misinformation and disinformation spread
  • 00:15:49
like wildfire on social media more than
  • 00:15:52
ever we need Global solidarity and we
  • 00:15:57
    need the United Nations but
  • 00:15:59
as the Secretary General recently noted
  • 00:16:02
the United Nations needs young people
  • 00:16:05
with your energy creativity courage and
  • 00:16:10
commitment so what do you need in this
  • 00:16:14
journey this amazing semester and this
  • 00:16:17
incredible pro project that you're each
  • 00:16:20
undertaking you need courage you need
  • 00:16:23
    courage to complete this incredible
  • 00:16:25
journey because believe me as Sam was
  • 00:16:28
saying when he started out in his dorm
  • 00:16:31
room it was just the beginning this is a
  • 00:16:34
lifetime journey of social impact as Sam
  • 00:16:38
    also said you need
  • 00:16:40
humility you need to remember that you
  • 00:16:42
    may not have every
  • 00:16:45
answer to every question and to every
  • 00:16:48
challenge turn to your community that's
  • 00:16:51
what this community is all about you
  • 00:16:55
need that Spirit of togetherness of
  • 00:16:58
community of Oneness of inclusion you
  • 00:17:02
have to collaborate no person is an
  • 00:17:05
island you are so much stronger when you
  • 00:17:08
    work together you need
  • 00:17:12
    tenacity because you will face
  • 00:17:14
challenges but if things were always
  • 00:17:17
simple there wouldn't be the chance to
  • 00:17:20
learn and to search for the right answer
  • 00:17:23
for the highest truth and how you can
  • 00:17:26
manifest that and last but not least I
  • 00:17:29
Echo Sam again and say you must always
  • 00:17:32
    maintain an
  • 00:17:34
    orientation an inner and outer
  • 00:17:37
orientation of Hope to accompany you on
  • 00:17:41
this journey to never give up on what
  • 00:17:45
you can accomplish because you are the
  • 00:17:50
    United Nations the United Nations
  • 00:17:52
Charter does not read we the governments
  • 00:17:56
of the United Nations no it reads we the
  • 00:18:01
peoples of the United Nations so
  • 00:18:05
understand as you take on these projects
  • 00:18:08
as you are working in your social impact
  • 00:18:11
areas you are actually the United
  • 00:18:14
Nations in action and that is so on
  • 00:18:19
    point with this year's theme
  • 00:18:22
sustainability in action so let me leave
  • 00:18:25
you with this one thought by Mark me she
  • 00:18:29
was an American Anthropologist and I
  • 00:18:32
take inspiration from her all the time
  • 00:18:35
and she said never doubt that a small
  • 00:18:38
    group of thoughtful committed citizens
  • 00:18:43
can change the world indeed it is the
  • 00:18:46
    only thing that ever
  • 00:18:49
    has thank
  • 00:18:51
you thank you so much jri thank you so
  • 00:18:54
much for reforming the need to be more
  • 00:18:57
    collaborative more empathetic more
  • 00:19:00
humble as we are all in this fight
  • 00:19:02
together at the height of probably all
  • 00:19:06
of us being caught in despair that
  • 00:19:08
nothing is being done thank you for for
  • 00:19:11
the hope that it builds and on a
  • 00:19:13
personal not as a person who also loves
  • 00:19:16
Margaret me thank you so much for
  • 00:19:18
sharing that particular Cote I think
  • 00:19:20
that was a Margaret me was a first uh
  • 00:19:22
fale Anthropologist I read thank you so
  • 00:19:25
much for that um thank you for such such
  • 00:19:29
inspiring inspiring remarks I have no
  • 00:19:32
doubt that all of us including the
  • 00:19:34
    upcoming class of Millennium Fellowship
  • 00:19:37
a class of 2024 they are also inspired
  • 00:19:40
as they begin to navigate this this
  • 00:19:43
    beautiful empowering Arena of social
  • 00:19:46
    impact and social
  • 00:19:47
change also for all of us who are
  • 00:19:50

  • 00:20:16
as I speak congratulations again to the
  • 00:20:20
    Millennium Fellowship class of
  • 00:20:22
2024 I'm adri jash she one of the
  • 00:20:26
    program coordinators for the Millennium
  • 00:20:28
campus netw joining in from India and
  • 00:20:30
I'm so excited and thrilled to learn
  • 00:20:33
from you about you and your vision for
  • 00:20:36
social impact and social change so I
  • 00:20:39
think it's high time we get to know each
  • 00:20:41
other a little bit better now you've
  • 00:20:43
been hearing from us throughout this
  • 00:20:45
town hall for the last 30 40ish minutes
  • 00:20:48
I think we can um hear from hear from
  • 00:20:51
you on your chat boxes you'll be seeing
  • 00:20:54
a link to M Maita you can click on that
  • 00:20:58
link that you can see on your chat boxes
  • 00:21:01
and answer this one prompt in one word
  • 00:21:05
what does social impact mean to you and
  • 00:21:09
as we all wait for you to respond let me
  • 00:21:13
turn to you Genesis what does social
  • 00:21:15
    impact mean to
  • 00:21:17
you I think social impact means
  • 00:21:19
community and really just being able to
  • 00:21:21
work with one another to create
  • 00:21:22
something that can help push us forward
  • 00:21:24
as a society and I think that the
  • 00:21:26
Millennium Fellowship is so good for
  • 00:21:28
that in particular because all of us are
  • 00:21:30
going to be working on our campuses with
  • 00:21:32
our fellows and getting to know one
  • 00:21:34
another meet new people and work towards
  • 00:21:37
our own personalized goals but as a
  • 00:21:39
whole we're all working together both on
  • 00:21:40
our campuses and as a whole as
  • 00:21:43
Millennium Fellowship there are so many
  • 00:21:45
of us and I think that together we can
  • 00:21:47
    produce something that's so important
  • 00:21:48
    and
  • 00:21:50
great absolutely I so agree um I can see
  • 00:21:55
the word cloud filling up change
  • 00:21:57
    community and
  • 00:21:59
inclusivity I think if you put all of
  • 00:22:01
this in a one pager or put all of these
  • 00:22:04
together in in a pot it's like the
  • 00:22:06
perfect recipe for what social impact is
  • 00:22:09
at the end of the day but yeah
  • 00:22:12
collaboration hope love I think I think
  • 00:22:15
we almost forget all the time how we
  • 00:22:17
need to Center humanness and humanity
  • 00:22:21
and whatever we do so I think love is
  • 00:22:23
also very important um but I'll pass it
  • 00:22:25
on to again Genesis what about the other
  • 00:22:27
words that here that are speaking to you
  • 00:22:29
the most honestly I think change it's
  • 00:22:32
the biggest one on there but I think
  • 00:22:34
it's so important because we're all
  • 00:22:36
trying to push forward in our society I
  • 00:22:39
think there are a lot of issues that can
  • 00:22:40
arise when it comes to the political
  • 00:22:43
aspects of where we're heading and the
  • 00:22:45
Divide between personal beliefs and how
  • 00:22:48
that kind of interplays into our
  • 00:22:49
day-to-day lives but I think change is
  • 00:22:51
just so important because we as the
  • 00:22:53
youngest generation who's able to incite
  • 00:22:56
change we can do so much
  • 00:22:59
and I think that it's great that the
  • 00:23:00
    Millennium fellows who are participating
  • 00:23:02
    in this are also seeing
  • 00:23:04
    [Music]
  • 00:23:06
that yeah no I absolutely agree
  • 00:23:09
absolutely change is at the heart of of
  • 00:23:12
social impact um but yeah it's we have
  • 00:23:16
over 900 responses that is amazing thank
  • 00:23:19
you so much for engaging with us in this
  • 00:23:22
    particular uh particular interactive
  • 00:23:24
session if you are unable to use Mita
  • 00:23:28
right now I think we can also reopen the
  • 00:23:31
chat box a little bit later when you can
  • 00:23:34
fill up your responses there as well but
  • 00:23:36
for the time being I'll pass it over to
  • 00:23:38
you jenesis to introduce the next
  • 00:23:40
segment of this global town hall yes for
  • 00:23:44
the next segment of the Town Hall we are
  • 00:23:47
going to be moving into the alumni panel
  • 00:23:51
um for this there's two amazing fellows
  • 00:23:55
who are going to be part of this um we
  • 00:23:58
    have
  • 00:23:59
sish who was joining us from Cornell
  • 00:24:01
University and Selena from boy serus law
  • 00:24:03
school sish and Selena do you want to
  • 00:24:05
    share something about your Millennium
  • 00:24:07
    Fellowship project and what you're
  • 00:24:08
looking forward to in the fellowship
  • 00:24:09
hello everyone my name is SES prau and
  • 00:24:12
I'm from Corell University Welcome to
  • 00:24:15
everyone from this cohort of Millennium
  • 00:24:18
fellows and I extremely excited that we
  • 00:24:21
all are here to make change and make
  • 00:24:24
impact in the world my project focuses a
  • 00:24:27
little bit on agriculture because I come
  • 00:24:29
from India and agriculture is the
  • 00:24:32
    backbone of our economy however
  • 00:24:34
pesticide inhalation debts are a huge
  • 00:24:36
problem in the country and my project
  • 00:24:39
aims to solve that in a more efficient
  • 00:24:42
way by increasing awareness as well as
  • 00:24:44
making sure that banning pesticides is a
  • 00:24:47
policy issue with the governments of the
  • 00:24:49
world I intend to create a stakeholder
  • 00:24:52
conferences so that people can discuss
  • 00:24:55
and make change this Fellowship brings
  • 00:24:58
us all together in one the Synergy of us
  • 00:25:01
is what makes change truly and now we
  • 00:25:06
have Selena from Germany a very close
  • 00:25:08
friend and another Millennium fellow of
  • 00:25:10
this year hi Millennium fellows alums
  • 00:25:13
and coordinators my name is Elina nna
  • 00:25:15
and I'm one of the campus directors of
  • 00:25:17
my cohort as well as co-organizer of the
  • 00:25:19
climate law summer weekend which is
  • 00:25:21
taking place for the first time in two
  • 00:25:23
weeks I discovered the field of
  • 00:25:25
education and climate law when I met a
  • 00:25:27
small but Fierce group of older students
  • 00:25:29
on our campus who were working to create
  • 00:25:32
    more educational opportunities for law
  • 00:25:34
    students interested in climate and
  • 00:25:36
    sustainability they had realized that
  • 00:25:38
classes in this field were offered
  • 00:25:39
rarely a phenomenon taking place not
  • 00:25:41
only in our University but in a lot of
  • 00:25:44
other German law faculties as well
  • 00:25:46
    climate change and climate protection
  • 00:25:48
    however are becoming increasingly
  • 00:25:50
    important topics for legal practitioners
  • 00:25:52
regardless of whether they work as
  • 00:25:53
lawyers in court in Academia or in the
  • 00:25:56
    administration their work as accompanied
  • 00:25:58
    by important and sometimes difficult
  • 00:26:00
questions to answer how far does the
  • 00:26:02
    state's responsibility to protect its
  • 00:26:04
citizens from climate change extend what
  • 00:26:07
measures can and must it take which laws
  • 00:26:09
need to be changed and which new ones
  • 00:26:11
    created what about discrimination and
  • 00:26:13
climate protection and how far can
  • 00:26:15
climate activism go with the aim of
  • 00:26:18
creating an initial sense for the range
  • 00:26:19
    of topics climate protection touches
  • 00:26:21
upon as well as getting more people
  • 00:26:23
interested in its legal implications my
  • 00:26:26
team and I were able to introduce a 4
  • 00:26:28
day program this year called the climate
  • 00:26:30
law Summer Weekend it offers students
  • 00:26:32
from all across Germany the opportunity
  • 00:26:34
to exchange ideas with the most renowned
  • 00:26:36
legal Professionals in this field while
  • 00:26:38
    networking with their peers and
  • 00:26:39
lecturers and learning more about their
  • 00:26:41
career paths developing the project was
  • 00:26:44
very rewarding for me but there were
  • 00:26:46
many moments when I clearly felt my lack
  • 00:26:48
of experience therefore I'm all the
  • 00:26:50
happier that I was accepted to become a
  • 00:26:52
millennium fellow this year the program
  • 00:26:54
will give me and my cohort the
  • 00:26:56
opportunity to ask all the questions
  • 00:26:58
    regarding project-based social impact
  • 00:26:59
work as well as learning new skills and
  • 00:27:02
competences to drive our concept forward
  • 00:27:04
and just as much as I'm excited about
  • 00:27:06
the course material I'm looking forward
  • 00:27:08
getting to know the class of 2024 as
  • 00:27:10
well as the already more experienced
  • 00:27:12
    Millennium fellows and the impressive
  • 00:27:14
projects pursued by them one of the
  • 00:27:16
people I'm very curious about is
  • 00:27:18
    Jeremiah Jeremiah your groundbreaking
  • 00:27:21
    work in environmental sustainability and
  • 00:27:23
energy is remarkable how did your
  • 00:27:25
    experience in the Millennium Fellowship
  • 00:27:27

  • 00:27:45
make a difference um back then I was
  • 00:27:49
deeply into trying to see how I can
  • 00:27:51
scale up my renewable energy project in
  • 00:27:53
s and the Millennium Fellowship just
  • 00:27:56
    didn't give me a platform it's charged
  • 00:27:58
my journey it was like being handed um a
  • 00:28:01
key that unlocked a community of
  • 00:28:02
    likeminded change makers all passionate
  • 00:28:05
about turning Big Ideas into tangible
  • 00:28:08
    impact the tools support connections
  • 00:28:11
always there and it was exactly what I
  • 00:28:14
needed um to scale up my vision for
  • 00:28:16
    sustainable energy for energy deprived
  • 00:28:18
communities in seron as you kick off
  • 00:28:22
your fellowship journey I want to
  • 00:28:23
encourage you to take full advantage of
  • 00:28:25
    this opportunity push your boundaries
  • 00:28:27
    question assumptions and engage deeply
  • 00:28:30
with your peers the friendship and
  • 00:28:32
Partnerships you form here can be the
  • 00:28:34
launch part for your project that will
  • 00:28:36
change the world sustainability is no
  • 00:28:38
more just a buzz word it's a call to
  • 00:28:41
action whether you are focused on people
  • 00:28:43
the planet or Prosperity your work is
  • 00:28:46
part of the bigger movement towards a
  • 00:28:48
more just and sustainable future so keep
  • 00:28:51
asking yourself how can I turn what I
  • 00:28:53
know into what I do thank you millenum
  • 00:28:55
fellows for your dedication and a huge
  • 00:28:57

  • 00:29:17
    advocacy how was your Millennium
  • 00:29:19
    Fellowship crucial towards what you
  • 00:29:21
    currently doing this
  • 00:29:23
areas thank you Jeremiah hello everyone
  • 00:29:27
    I am
  • 00:29:28
a millennium fellow alumnus and the
  • 00:29:30
    executive director of Grassroots to
  • 00:29:32
    Global sustain development Network and
  • 00:29:34
it's a delight to have been invited as
  • 00:29:36
his panelist to the global town hall
  • 00:29:38
    class of
  • 00:29:39
    2024 as a millennium fellow alumnos I
  • 00:29:42
want to take this moment to commend and
  • 00:29:44
appreciate s Vega for his commitment and
  • 00:29:47
consistency in This Global event which
  • 00:29:50
has c a dynamic experience for me and
  • 00:29:53
has also contributed to the meaningful
  • 00:29:55
action I take when it comes to the
  • 00:29:57
    sustainability space leading the project
  • 00:30:01
I was um in my undergraduate days
  • 00:30:04
actually buil some capacity and some
  • 00:30:06
skills with me or in me that has led to
  • 00:30:09
the meaningful work I carry out with my
  • 00:30:11
    NGO Grassroots to Global sustainable
  • 00:30:13
development Network and I must say that
  • 00:30:16
this period played a pivotal role for me
  • 00:30:18
and was relevant in building those
  • 00:30:20
skills and so I want to emplore you
  • 00:30:22
class of 2024 to seize this moment in
  • 00:30:24
building capacity and skills relevant to
  • 00:30:27
advancing the work you would do post
  • 00:30:29
your graduation and post this Fellowship
  • 00:30:32
I'm wishing you all the very best as you
  • 00:30:34
    take action for the sustainable
  • 00:30:36
prosperity of our people and our shared
  • 00:30:38
Planet thank you and so to you Shreya I
  • 00:30:42
know you also have been making great
  • 00:30:43
strides in the area of environmental
  • 00:30:46
    sustainability especially leveraging
  • 00:30:48
your research work could you briefly
  • 00:30:51
show your work in climate environment
  • 00:30:54
and share how you believe this new class
  • 00:30:57
    of
  • 00:30:58
campus fellows can maximize their time
  • 00:31:01
in the fellowship to elevate their
  • 00:31:03
impact over to you Shrea thank you V hi
  • 00:31:06
everyone it's so wonderful to be joining
  • 00:31:07
all of you today I'm Shrea chy a fourth
  • 00:31:10
year student at UC Berkeley and a
  • 00:31:12
millennium fellow Alum from 2023 my
  • 00:31:15
    project for the Millennium Fellowship
  • 00:31:17
was a course that I created and taught
  • 00:31:18
    at Berkeley called decolonizing
  • 00:31:20
environmentalism the first of its kind
  • 00:31:22
at Berkeley that directly addressed the
  • 00:31:24
colonial roots of the climate crisis and
  • 00:31:26
    detailed potential climate solutions
  • 00:31:28
    from indigenous knowledge systems
  • 00:31:30
globally I'm excited to see it grow
  • 00:31:33
further this year with a larger team of
  • 00:31:34
student teachers this project was only
  • 00:31:37
    possible through the Millennium
  • 00:31:38
fellowship and it was instrumental to
  • 00:31:40
grow the nonprofit that I founded and
  • 00:31:42
run project pit which is dedicated to
  • 00:31:45
    building anti-colonial climate education
  • 00:31:48
congratulations to the next class of
  • 00:31:50
    Millennium fellows this Fellowship is
  • 00:31:52
    such an incredible opportunity to
  • 00:31:54
develop and grow your own project it
  • 00:31:56
does go by faster than you would expect
  • 00:31:58
however so my advice for maximizing your
  • 00:32:01
time for elevating your impact will be
  • 00:32:03
to have a clear plan set with specific
  • 00:32:05
deadlines for yourself before you begin
  • 00:32:07
your fellowship I found it especially
  • 00:32:09
helpful to block specific hours within
  • 00:32:12
my weekly schedule that was dedicated to
  • 00:32:14
working on the fellowship congrats once
  • 00:32:17
again to the Millennium class of 2024
  • 00:32:19
I'm so excited to see everything that
  • 00:32:21
each of you will accomplish wishing you
  • 00:32:23
all the best in embarking in your
  • 00:32:24

  • 00:32:44

  • 00:32:52
are living our cbon footprint like a
  • 00:32:54
giant car and ignoring the warnings
  • 00:32:56
chaos and instability so far every day
  • 00:32:59
we see the data and statistics piling up
  • 00:33:02
highe yet we easily turn a blind eye
  • 00:33:04
despite being faced with the aura of
  • 00:33:06
climate change that the oppressed and

MC's cor cor programs 10 years ago MCN

  • 00:50:47
Leon to Haiti Ghana to India Ecuador to
  • 00:50:51
Malaysia and many many more other
  • 00:50:54
countries it is now my pleasure to
  • 00:50:56
    introduce
  • 00:50:57
Mr Steven Fox from the Rema Family

    Foundation to speak about our
  • 00:51:01
partnership and to make a special
  • 00:51:02
    announcement about the 2024 10th
  • 00:51:04
Millennium oceans prize Stephen over to
  • 00:51:08
you thank you James hello Millennium
  • 00:51:12
fellow my name is Stephen Fox I'm a
  • 00:51:14
trustee of the Remer Family Foundation
  • 00:51:16
supporting grants in the ocean space I'm
  • 00:51:18
a prop a partner at propeller Ventures
  • 00:51:21
which funds ocean climate startups and
  • 00:51:23
I'm just a overall huge ocean nerd uh
  • 00:51:27
but most importantly I am thrilled to be
  • 00:51:30
    introducing this year's Millennium
  • 00:51:32
oceans Prize winner a little bit of
  • 00:51:34
background 10 years ago this prize
  • 00:51:36
started as a niche it was the first
  • 00:51:39
    prize was given before
  • 00:51:41
sg14 uh even existed um today there are
  • 00:51:46
thousands of you Millennium fellows uh
  • 00:51:49
supporting all of the SGS and I'd like
  • 00:51:51
to think the oceans prize embodies much
  • 00:51:53
of your theme for the year
  • 00:51:55
sustainability and it is a place where
  • 00:51:57
our planet is transforming and we can
  • 00:52:00
take actions today to tangibly help
  • 00:52:02
    Coastal societies and economies thrive
  • 00:52:04
in a changing world and heal uh and
  • 00:52:07
sustain the health of our oceans and
  • 00:52:09
coastlines to that end um we've had
  • 00:52:12
    another record-breaking year for the
  • 00:52:13
oceans prize in quantity and quality of
  • 00:52:16
applicants eager to push Solutions and
  • 00:52:18
    gather support for protecting our
  • 00:52:20
oceans uh I often refer to the oceans as
  • 00:52:23
the lungs of our planet I think it's
  • 00:52:25
very easy to disassociate ourselves from
  • 00:52:27
the ocean it's vast appears unvarying
  • 00:52:30
and is largely Over the Horizon but we
  • 00:52:32
live on an ocean planet 70% of our home
  • 00:52:36
planet is the ocean and it does a heavy
  • 00:52:38
lifting of keeping us cool recycling the
  • 00:52:41
air we breathe and mitigating the
  • 00:52:43
dramatic effects of climate change it is
  • 00:52:45
    also powerful and an intimidating
  • 00:52:48
presence not for the faint of heart so
  • 00:52:50
it gives me strength to know that many
  • 00:52:52
of you have submitted for the prize in
  • 00:52:54
the face of this unrelenting challenge
  • 00:52:56
it's a important work it must get done
  • 00:52:58
    for our planet our
