Timeline
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
Part 2 continues the discussion of gender dynamics in Korea, starting with historical context on Neo-Confucianism and Japanese imperialism. Key incidents like the Ishmael Swimsuit affair are mentioned, illustrating tensions between male game enthusiasts and female creators, leading to a new conflict rooted in gacha gaming culture.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
Sponsor advertisement for Brilliant discusses their educational platform. The video shifts focus to DC Inside, a Korean online forum similar to 4chan and Reddit, known for anonymity and diverse communities. Historical incidents illustrate the emergence of subversive groups like Megallion, created by women reversing male-centric memes to push back against male dominance on the platform.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
The narrative unfolds around the Mega idea, citing examples of women overpowering male spaces online using trolling techniques like mirroring. Although Megallion faced backlash and bans, they also contributed to women's rights causes. Despite its eventual dissolution, Megallia left a lasting impact on Korean internet culture.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
Discussion shifts to historical Korean governance post-WWII highlighting societal divisions. The foundation of modern South Korea under Singman Ree is explored, illustrating how American influence and capitalist hierarchies emerged, shaping current societal structures, further complicating gender dynamics as power structures reinforced conservative values.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
Ree's era characterized by corruption and authoritarian rule contextualizes contemporary hierarchical issues, mirroring North Korean parallels with Kim Il-sung. The divided Korea and its Western capitalist vs. Soviet system influence fueled political tensions, creating a historical backdrop for today's government-chaebol power dynamics and consequent societal disparities.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
Chaebol State dynamics are analyzed, showcasing well-known chaebols' powerful influence, facilitated by governmental corruption and family-driven capitalism in South Korea. Park Chung-hee's leadership rejuvenated economic growth through industrialization, intertwining corporate and governmental paths, reinforcing hierarchy and chaebol empowerment, still echoing today.
- 00:30:00 - 00:35:00
Diving deeper into Park Chung-hee's authoritarian governance, juxtaposed against the North, illustrates how capitalist-driven legacies continue influencing South Korean politics. Despite economic prosperity, societal issues like inequality grew under Park, cementing the cycle of political instability and the chaebolsโ iron grip on Korea's socio-economic fabric.
- 00:35:00 - 00:40:00
South Korea's troubled history continues with Chun Doo-hwan seizing power, using capital to bolster authoritarian governance amid civil unrest. Yet, chaebols' growing economic clout created enduring societal inequalities, ultimately undermining governmental authority and emboldening chaebols, shaping the modern economic and political landscape with continued instability.
- 00:40:00 - 00:45:00
Post-1987, Korean democracy evolved yet faced setbacks as chaebols gained unchecked power, overshadowing political reforms. Attempted reforms by presidents like Kim Young-sam, Kim Dae-jung, and Roh Moo-hyun failed or were marred by corruption scandals illustrating the formidable challenge chaebols present, controlling vast economic assets and deeply entrenching corruption.
- 00:45:00 - 00:50:00
Roh Moo-hyun, an idealist president committed to reform, meets a tragic end due to systemic corruption entangled with chaebols' power, marking a turning point in Korean political disillusionment. Despite potential progressive advances, systemic economic disparities drive despair within the population, complicating class and gender dynamics in the society.
- 00:50:00 - 00:55:00
Chaebols' dominance continues unabated as corruption scandals persist, leading to incarcerations and controversies among elite families, like Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye, highlighting socio-political struggles. Efforts to curb chaebol influence remain largely ineffective amidst ever-higher stakes in navigating economic imperatives and political freedoms.
- 00:55:00 - 01:00:00
The Korea Gacha saga unfolds against the backdrop of chaebol influence, societal pressure, and gender imbalance. The impact of pop culture and societal hierarchies conflates personal and economic disenfranchisement with gender conflicts, manifesting in gaming communities where systemic frustration finds expression.
- 01:00:00 - 01:05:00
Gacha gaming realms reveal intersections between online subcultural dynamics and broader societal reflections on class and gender conflicts. The irrational outbursts surrounding game controversies echo deeper unease in South Korean society, marked by youth disenchantment and scapegoating women amidst mounting social inequalities and economic power imbalances.
- 01:05:00 - 01:10:00
Amidst economic despair, the power asymmetries between Korean society's various strata underscore gender conflicts, fueled by entrenched hierarchical traditions compounded by socio-economic challenges, painting a grim picture frame by frame within the narrative of gacha game scandals and protestations.
- 01:10:00 - 01:15:00
While societal pressures weigh heavily, especially on youth, media and entertainment like Limbo Company expose these conflicts by allegorically examining societal flaws. Despite fierce blame on women in the gacha sector, deeper systemic issues reveal skewed power distribution symptomatic of broader, unresolved societal discord.
- 01:15:00 - 01:20:00
Kontemporary gender controversies within the gacha community magnified by media representation and youth disenchantment showcase systemic friction points, where elements of social inequality seep into gaming domains illustrating broader regional malaise, rooted in historical inequities and chaebol-dominated narratives.
- 01:20:00 - 01:25:00
A broader cultural introspection is urged as internet and gacha gaming microcosms mirror national discontent boiling over due to societal imbalances, economic inequality, and unresolved tensions within hierarchical structures, exacerbating youth's feeling of disenfranchisement amidst market and social pressures.
- 01:25:00 - 01:30:00
The targets of scapegoating in gacha games, often women, illuminate broader frustrations stemming from ineffectual governmental response to chaebol monopolies and scapegoating practices, unraveling further discord within societal and economic systems, as disparities and injustices perpetuate ongoing cultural and gender rifts.
- 01:30:00 - 01:35:00
In South Korea, this ongoing struggle reflects profound societal disconnects and frustrations over economic opportunity gaps and hierarchical inequity, as people contend with chaebol influence inflecting social and cultural disenfranchisements, manifesting visibly in gaming conflicts, highlighting unresolved historical grievances.
- 01:35:00 - 01:49:23
The introspective conclusion links the microcosm of gacha gaming feuds to the broader societal discontent, urging a reconsideration of entrenched hierarchies and economic disparities as youth grapple with intertwined cultural, economic, and gender challenges in an evolving yet persistently troubled South Korean landscape.

- 00:02:42DC inside DC inside is a Korean Forum of
- 00:02:46sorts that functions like an Unholy
- 00:02:48marriage between forchan and Reddit much
- 00:02:50like forchan DC has a tradition of
- 00:02:52anonymity and many of the Korean
- 00:02:54internet's favorite memes and inside
- 00:02:56jokes come from DC's mimetic forges and
- 00:02:59much like reddits subreddits or for
- 00:03:01chance boards the site hosts many
- 00:03:03different communities called galleries
- 00:03:05Each of which talks about any number of
- 00:03:07different topics at any given time a lot
- 00:03:10of the coordination of we'll generously
- 00:03:12call them information campaigns
- 00:03:14surrounding the ishmail swimsuit
- 00:03:15incident for example came from DC inside
- 00:03:19but it would be completely inaccurate to
- 00:03:21say that DC inside as a whole was
- 00:03:24responsible for those campaigns now DC
- 00:03:26has been around for a very long time it
- 00:03:28was founded back in 19 99 and has only
- 00:03:31grown since then although DC has a bit
- 00:03:33of a reputation for being a right
- 00:03:34leaning Forum this isn't necessarily the
- 00:03:37case DC as many galleries representing
- 00:03:39many different political perspectives as
- 00:03:41well as innumerous non-political topics
- 00:03:44and they all tenuously Coexist on the
- 00:03:47website back in the long-forgotten year
- 00:03:49of 2015 one such a gallery was made

- 00:04:07camel flu was one of those outbreaks and
- 00:04:09it was responsible for the death of
- 00:04:11almost 1,000 people now in the marish
- 00:04:14gallery a rumor emerged that two women
- 00:04:16who had contracted marriage chose not to
- 00:04:18quarantine as instructed and instead
- 00:04:21went to go shopping in Hong Kong
- 00:04:23ostensibly spreading this dangerous
- 00:04:25virus although this rumor appeared to be
- 00:04:28false the outrage was nonetheless
- 00:04:30palpable and the Maris Gallery users
- 00:04:32were quick to insult these hypothetical
- 00:04:34super spreaders by calling them kimino
- 00:04:37kimchi women a derogatory term for
- 00:04:40undesirable gold digging SL empty-headed
- 00:04:42Korean women which is contrasted
- 00:04:45ironically perhaps against susho
- 00:04:47referring to allegedly more desirable
- 00:04:49and submissive Japanese women which just
- 00:04:52goes to show you that Miyazaki was right
- 00:04:55and Anime was a mistake that was a joke
- 00:04:58by the way I thought I should make make
- 00:04:59that clear just in case please don't
- 00:05:01drive a protest truck around my office
- 00:05:03where was I right well the use of these
- 00:05:06offensive terms and the proliferation of
- 00:05:08this apparently fallacious story of two
- 00:05:10selfish women led to some backlash
- 00:05:12amongst the female users of DC inside
- 00:05:15who came into this Mar gallery and began
- 00:05:17trolling but because the mar Gallery was
- 00:05:20relatively small and there were so many
- 00:05:21women pouring into this gallery to troll
- 00:05:24something rather unusual happened women
- 00:05:26outnumbered men in a gallery on DC
- 00:05:29inside and were able to seize control
- 00:05:31however briefly of the narrative the
- 00:05:33women's trolling included making
- 00:05:35degrading statements intended to provoke
- 00:05:37men they made bait and switch posts in
- 00:05:39the gallery that appeared at first to be
- 00:05:40supporting the male position only for
- 00:05:42users to click through and discover a
- 00:05:44chart for example showing that 94% of
- 00:05:46felonies in South Korea are committed by
- 00:05:48men the women also reversed common male
- 00:05:51chauvinist memes in a tongue and cheek
- 00:05:54way taking kimchi women for example and
- 00:05:56turning it into kimchi men in order to
- 00:05:59anger their male counterparts a
- 00:06:01technique that would later become known
- 00:06:03as mirroring this brief moment of
- 00:06:05control of empowerment if you want to
- 00:06:07call it that had a ripple effect the
- 00:06:09vastly outnumbered and generally
- 00:06:11voiceless community of women on the
- 00:06:13Korean internet now had a tool a
- 00:06:16successful way to troll and seek
- 00:06:18catharsis albeit in an arguably rather
- 00:06:21toxic Manner and they took what they
- 00:06:24learned from the mar gallery into the
- 00:06:26rest of the Korean internet bringing
- 00:06:28with them their trollish TX ICS and a
- 00:06:30decidedly feminist slant this informal
- 00:06:32organization of trolling women called
- 00:06:34themselves the megallion a combination

- 00:06:43brenberg where women rule the world and
- 00:06:46men have the more subordinate role I
- 00:06:48find this to be a rather ironic decision
- 00:06:50given that the book asks the reader
- 00:06:52whether or not the problem is gender in
- 00:06:53it of itself or whether the problem is
- 00:06:55power is control but I digress we'll

- 00:07:38controversial in South Korea their
- 00:07:40mirroring memes disrupted the status quo
- 00:07:42and pushed back against the strict
- 00:07:44confines of Korean hierarchy in ways
- 00:07:46that are considered irredeemable within
- 00:07:47the context of Korean culture on the one
- 00:07:50hand mallia's protests and fundraisers
- 00:07:52did assist in various women's rights
- 00:07:54causes and gave women in Korea a
- 00:07:55powerful influential voice on the
- 00:07:57internet for arguably the first time in
- 00:07:59Korean internet history but on the other
- 00:08:02hand mallia's culture came from DC
- 00:08:04inside which again is like forgan and
- 00:08:07the humor and language of such a culture
- 00:08:08translates extremely poorly into real
- 00:08:11life DC inside might be trollish and

- 00:11:12brought before the United Nations which
- 00:11:14also failed to produce a solution that
- 00:11:16was amenable to the Soviet Union and
- 00:11:18thus it was decided that at least Korean
- 00:11:20self-rule could be restored to the
- 00:11:22territory that the UN still had the
- 00:11:24power to effect meaning us occupied
- 00:11:27South Korea in May of 1948 South Korea
- 00:11:30held its first elections under the
- 00:11:32supervision of the United Nations voter
- 00:11:34turnout was allegedly
- 00:11:3795% and on July 20th 1948 singman re was
- 00:11:41elected as the first president of the
- 00:11:43Republic of Korea winning with
- 00:11:4692.3% of the vote if those numbers are
- 00:11:49to be believed 88% of eligible voting AG

- 00:11:58Korea requires an understanding of its
- 00:12:01so-called Founding Father singman R was
- 00:12:04born in
- 00:12:051875 he received a traditional Confucian
- 00:12:08education in a private school and became
- 00:12:10involved in Korean politics when he was
- 00:12:12only 20 only a few years after getting
- 00:12:15involved in politics ree was imprisoned
- 00:12:17for allegedly supporting a coup to
- 00:12:19remove King gojong the last king of the
- 00:12:21Josan Dynasty from Power R was released
- 00:12:25from prison in 1904 and shortly
- 00:12:27thereafter he fled to the United States
- 00:12:29in 1905 re met face to face with none
- 00:12:32other than president Theodore Roosevelt
- 00:12:35during which he tried and failed to
- 00:12:36convince the president to intervene in
- 00:12:38the imminent Japanese victory in the
- 00:12:39Russo Japanese war R then went to
- 00:12:42college at George Washington University
- 00:12:44graduating in 1907 he received his
- 00:12:46master of arts degree from Harvard in
- 00:12:481908 and finally he obtained a PhD from
- 00:12:51Princeton in
- 00:12:521910 his doctoral thesis was titled
- 00:12:55neutrality as influenced by the United
- 00:12:57States spent the next 40 Years of his
- 00:13:00life in the United States and only
- 00:13:01returned to Korea after the Japanese
- 00:13:03surrender in 1945 in hopes of
- 00:13:06reintegrating himself into Korean
- 00:13:08politics R had lived in the United
- 00:13:10States longer than he had ever lived in
- 00:13:11Korea and thus was in many respects
- 00:13:14almost a foreigner to the Koreans who
- 00:13:16had just suffered through World War II
- 00:13:19at the hands of Japanese
- 00:13:21Occupation but re had an advantage that
- 00:13:24no other Korean politician had a command
- 00:13:27of the English language and the backing
- 00:13:29of the United States and it was staunch
- 00:13:32American support that allowed singman re
- 00:13:34to consolidate the Korean conservatives
- 00:13:36and build a new Mandate of Heaven for
- 00:13:39Korea quoting now British Diplomat Roger
- 00:13:42Mak on singman re Americans have always
- 00:13:45liked the idea of dealing with a foreign
- 00:13:47leader who can be identified as their
- 00:13:50man re upon taking power with the
- 00:13:53backing and support of the United States
- 00:13:55as their guy in the chair set about
- 00:13:57creating a new hierarchy
- 00:13:59the consequences of which reach into
- 00:14:01Korean Society even
- 00:14:05today at the top of that new hierarchy
- 00:14:07was of course singman re but the second
- 00:14:11chair in the hierarchy the scepter of
- 00:14:13power was capital a new liberal system
- 00:14:17built in the American Image by a Korean
- 00:14:19president who was picked by and
- 00:14:21essentially was an American singman re
- 00:14:23just so happened to also be the man with
- 00:14:25all of the capital and he never intended
- 00:14:28to give up his hold on the scepter upon
- 00:14:30taking control of the government re
- 00:14:32purged his political Rivals and
- 00:14:34Consolidated his power securing the
- 00:14:36support of moneyed interests powerful
- 00:14:38and wealthy families many of whom had
- 00:14:40made their wealth collaborating with the
- 00:14:42Japanese known as the CH balls he had a
- 00:14:46vision a unified Korea under one leader
- 00:14:49wielding the scepter of capital but the
- 00:14:51backing of the United States should
- 00:14:53anything go arai re's time in power is
- 00:14:55remembered for both its extensive human
- 00:14:58rights violations and its extraordinary
- 00:15:01economic inequality his government was
- 00:15:03Infamous for its corruption every layer
- 00:15:05on the hierarchy stole from the layer
- 00:15:07beneath it but believe it or not when
- 00:15:10one considers the whole story of History
- 00:15:12re may have been the better of two evils
- 00:15:15for you see on the other side of the
- 00:15:1738th parallel the Soviet Union's
- 00:15:20strongman One kimil S had aspirations of
- 00:15:23his own he too had a vision a dream of a
- 00:15:26unified Korea and he too had built a new
- 00:15:29hierarchy with himself at the top now
- 00:15:32look there's a lot of nuance here that I
- 00:15:33don't have time to get into North Korea
- 00:15:36wasn't always the way that it is today
- 00:15:38but Kim ilung and his family remain at
- 00:15:41the top of the hierarchy in North Korea
- 00:15:43which is the important takeaway in South
- 00:15:45Korea if you walk around the big cities
- 00:15:47and the places of greatest Global
- 00:15:49importance you will see what represents
- 00:15:51the top of the modern South Korean
- 00:15:54hierarchy signs and billboards and
- 00:15:56pictures of things to buy of things youi
- 00:15:58need of the companies that you work for
- 00:16:01in North Korea if you do the same
- 00:16:03walking around important places if
- 00:16:05you're allowed to do that you will see
- 00:16:07pictures of kiml sun and his Descendants
- 00:16:10the Kim family remains at the top of the
- 00:16:12Confucian North Korean hierarchy wrapped
- 00:16:15in a blanket of plausible deniability ju
- 00:16:18ideology and it is in part Korea's neoc
- 00:16:21confusion Legacy that enables the Kim
- 00:16:23family to maintain its Chokehold on
- 00:16:25North Korea to this day in any case on
- 00:16:29June 25th 1950 the North Korean military
- 00:16:32crossed the 38th parallel and began its
- 00:16:34invasion of South Korea singman re
- 00:16:37declared in A Brave address that every
- 00:16:39Cabinet member including myself will
- 00:16:41protect the government and Parliament
- 00:16:43has decided to remain in Soul citizens
- 00:16:45should not worry and remain in their
- 00:16:48workplaces in truth singman re had
- 00:16:50already fled South to Busan and he had
- 00:16:52even ordered the military to blow up the
- 00:16:54Han River Bridge in order to prevent the
- 00:16:56North Koreans from following him in so
- 00:16:58doing he ATT trapped much of the
- 00:17:00remaining civilian population in Soul
- 00:17:02throughout the Korean War re and his
- 00:17:04government acted as an anchor on the UN
- 00:17:06war effort consider for example the
- 00:17:08infamous National Defense Corps incident
- 00:17:10where funds that were supposed to go
- 00:17:12towards military supplies were embezzled
- 00:17:14by the rnment leading to the deaths of
- 00:17:1750 to 90,000 conscripted soldiers and
- 00:17:20the incapacitation of another 200,000
- 00:17:22conscripts to frostbite re was also
- 00:17:25heavily opposed to the Armistice which
- 00:17:27ended armed conflict between North and
- 00:17:29South Korea going so far as to
- 00:17:32deliberately sabotage peace negotiations
- 00:17:35after the war re was quite unpopular
- 00:17:38amongst the legislature and was
- 00:17:39therefore almost certain to be voted out
- 00:17:41of power re however quashed his
- 00:17:44political opposition using Force
- 00:17:46including threats and arrests which then
- 00:17:48allowed him to pass a constitutional
- 00:17:49amendment allowing for the public to
- 00:17:51directly vote for the president he then
- 00:17:53ran without real opposition and very
- 00:17:55naturally won Under re's regime South
- 00:17:59Korea was a democracy in name only to
- 00:18:01singman re since he sat at the top of
- 00:18:03the hierarchy Korea was not the country
- 00:18:05of his people it was his country his
- 00:18:10property and everyone underneath him in
- 00:18:12the hierarchy existed only to hold his
- 00:18:15chair up for example when general
- 00:18:18Douglas MacArthur was sacked by
- 00:18:20President Truman ree was Furious
- 00:18:23MacArthur's ideas were insane he wanted
- 00:18:26to go for an allout nuclear war against
- 00:18:29China which would likely have invited a
- 00:18:31Soviet nuclear response but re didn't
- 00:18:34care if nuclear war against China
- 00:18:37brought all of Korea back under his
- 00:18:39control the ends Justified the means
- 00:18:43when MacArthur was sacked re blamed the
- 00:18:45British take a look at this once top
- 00:18:48secret now Declassified CIA dossier
- 00:18:50wherein re was reported to have stated
- 00:18:52to an Australian official of the UN that
- 00:18:55British troops have outstayed their
- 00:18:57welcome in my country tell that to your

- 00:19:03Zealand and British troops all represent
- 00:19:05governments now as sabotaging Brave
- 00:19:07American efforts to liberate and unify
- 00:19:10my unhappy Nation my country says R my
- 00:19:15nation but singman re did not end up
- 00:19:17like camil sun an eternal president on
- 00:19:20April 26th 1960 not long after re's
- 00:19:24fourth term in office the student LED
- 00:19:26April Revolution over drew his deeply
- 00:19:29corrupt regime and forced him to
- 00:19:30abdicate and 2 days later on April 28th
- 00:19:34as protesters closed in around re's
- 00:19:37presidential Palace the CIA snuck ree
- 00:19:40out of South Korea and brought him back
- 00:19:42to the United States where he lived
- 00:19:44thereafter in Honolulu R was succeeded
- 00:19:47by Yo's son who served as the president
- 00:19:50of the very short-lived second Republic
- 00:19:52of Korea the second Republic of Korea
- 00:19:55lasted for only a little over a year but
- 00:19:57factional infighting in an economic
- 00:19:59death spiral led to the rise of one of
- 00:20:01South Korea's most controversial and
- 00:20:04important leaders a figure that we in
- 00:20:07the west barely even learn about if we
- 00:20:10learn about him at all the third
- 00:20:13president of South Korea Park Chong
- 00:20:18HEI Park Chung he seized power from the
- 00:20:21second Republic through a military coup
- 00:20:23and was elected president in
- 00:20:261963 Park like re was an authoritarian
- 00:20:30through and through his government was
- 00:20:32noted for its very extensive human
- 00:20:34rights violations and for the yian
- 00:20:35constitution of 1972 which made him
- 00:20:38essentially dictator for life and park
- 00:20:41also like re saw the value in both
- 00:20:43utilizing the Confucian hierarchical
- 00:20:46programming of Korean Society but also
- 00:20:48in placing Capital at the top of that
- 00:20:51hierarchy Park ostensibly wanted to do
- 00:20:54away with tradition but some traditions
- 00:20:56could still serve his purposes
- 00:20:58Capital would Grant Park legitimacy the
- 00:21:01legitimacy he needed to be the dictator
- 00:21:03of South Korea but unlike singman re
- 00:21:06Park Chun he was both shrewd and
- 00:21:08ambitious instead of merely hoarding
- 00:21:11wealth via corruption like a dragon Park
- 00:21:13Chung he knew that the true power of
- 00:21:15capital is not in hoarding it for
- 00:21:17oneself but in using it to control
- 00:21:19others perhaps it was national pride
- 00:21:21perhaps it was a genuine love of his
- 00:21:23people or perhaps he just wanted the
- 00:21:25benefits of ruling over a more
- 00:21:26prosperous Nation whatever the motives
- 00:21:28the facts remain parkk chuni was
- 00:21:31critical in changing the trajectory of
- 00:21:33the South Korean economy pulling it out
- 00:21:35of the malays of war and into the
- 00:21:37economic Limelight to that end Park
- 00:21:40combined many different economic
- 00:21:41theories and models to develop a path
- 00:21:43that fit the Korean context for example
- 00:21:47Park copied the Soviet Union's 5-year
- 00:21:49plans as a means of spurring rapid
- 00:21:51industrialization and to fulfill those
- 00:21:535-year plans Park looked to the Japanese
- 00:21:55model of development which intertwined
- 00:21:58industry and government in order to
- 00:21:59create and develop native industries
- 00:22:01that could compete globally after a time
- 00:22:03of development accomplishing this feat
- 00:22:05would require more than just absolute
- 00:22:07control over the government however and
- 00:22:08so park Chung he built up the power of
- 00:22:11the number two in the hierarchy just as
- 00:22:14his predecessor did he empowered the CH
- 00:22:17balls if you watched the jrpg video you
- 00:22:20may recall how powerful and wealthy
- 00:22:22families known as the zatu were
- 00:22:24leveraged by the postwar Japanese
- 00:22:26government and thereafter metamorphed
- 00:22:29into the modern ketu massive
- 00:22:31conglomerates that rule Japan's economy
- 00:22:34well just as Korean confusion ism is
- 00:22:36more extreme than Japanese confusion ISM
- 00:22:39the cha balls are like the ketsu but
- 00:22:41even more influential in South Korea and
- 00:22:45even more exclusive in nature a cha Bal
- 00:22:48is like a financial conglomerate that is
- 00:22:50generally controlled by a very small
- 00:22:52number of people typically a single
- 00:22:54family or a few powerful families
- 00:22:56working together some of these cha balls
- 00:22:59were preferential Partners we'll call
- 00:23:01them of the corrupt re government and as
- 00:23:04we had mentioned some cha balls even
- 00:23:06derived their early wealth from
- 00:23:07collaborating with the Japanese during
- 00:23:09their occupation of Korea the park
- 00:23:12regime promised to abolish the
- 00:23:14corruption of the re era arresting many
- 00:23:16of the industrialists behind the cha
- 00:23:19balls only to then reduce the charges to
- 00:23:21Mere fines behind closed doors in
- 00:23:24exchange for their cooperation the plan
- 00:23:26was simple the government empowered the
- 00:23:28cha Balls by subsidizing their
- 00:23:30development guaranteeing their foreign
- 00:23:32loans and protecting them as they grew
- 00:23:33until their goods and output reached a
- 00:23:36point where they could compete in export
- 00:23:38markets a plan of export-led
- 00:23:41industrialization Park was happy to
- 00:23:43empower the cha balls as they reinforced
- 00:23:45his position at the top of the hierarchy
- 00:23:47the growing Korean economy lent his
- 00:23:49otherwise brutal authoritarian rule
- 00:23:51substantial legitimacy and as dictator
- 00:23:53for life it would be simple for him to
- 00:23:55keep his hand on the scepter of capital
- 00:23:57wielding that legitimacy when needed but
- 00:24:01therein lies the problem one can only be
- 00:24:04dictator for life as long as one's life
- 00:24:07is and the problem with putting capital
- 00:24:10in the second chair of the hierarchy is
- 00:24:13that people live only for a short time
- 00:24:16while ideas can potentially Live
- 00:24:21Forever The mealia Movement being a
- 00:24:24product of the Anarchy of DC Insight was
- 00:24:27not internally stable there was no
- 00:24:29unifying statement of beliefs some
- 00:24:32megallion cared most about pushing for
- 00:24:33women's rights and others cared more
- 00:24:35about venting their frustrations with
- 00:24:37men some megallion wanted to troll and
- 00:24:39some wanted to protest some megallion
- 00:24:41were against all men and thereby found
- 00:24:43gay men the most detestable of all for
- 00:24:45being Men Who Loved men those megallion
- 00:24:48allegedly outed gay men in straight
- 00:24:49relationships or harassed trans women
- 00:24:52other megallion were progressives who
- 00:24:54wanted to unify the megalan women's
- 00:24:56rights movement with the smaller Korean
- 00:24:58LGBT movement let's call a spade a spade
- 00:25:02megallion have done some genuinely
- 00:25:04heinous things but it has always been a
- 00:25:07decentralized movement pulling in many
- 00:25:09different directions this internal
- 00:25:12instability caused megalia to explode
- 00:25:15into many smaller websites with one in
- 00:25:17particular a forum called woad being the
- 00:25:20largest and also allegedly the most
- 00:25:22extreme by mid 2016 megalia was already
- 00:25:25on the way out the door it was already
- 00:25:27the throws of collapse but this did not
- 00:25:30stop Korean male Gamers from seeing the
- 00:25:32Spectre of megalia behind every shadow
- 00:25:35on July 18th 2016 voice actress Kim Jon
- 00:25:39who was voicing a character in the
- 00:25:41popular Korean game closers tweeted a
- 00:25:44picture of a t-shirt the shirt's design
- 00:25:47was a simple slogan written in English
- 00:25:49girls do not need a prince this is
- 00:25:52hardly a controversial statement in the
- 00:25:54West in fact it's been the plot of like
- 00:25:56every single Disney movie since Tangled
- 00:25:58came out in
- 00:25:592010 the Tweet was accompanied by
- 00:26:01another English statement a quote from
- 00:26:03the cartoon star versus the forces of
- 00:26:05evil I don't need a hero I need a friend
- 00:26:0812 hours after posting this tweet Kim
- 00:26:11Jon was fired from her voice acting job
- 00:26:13for closers that shirt you see was
- 00:26:16produced by megalia and male Gamers were
- 00:26:20furious at Kim Jon for supporting what
- 00:26:22they called an anti-man hate group when
- 00:26:25Kim thereafter refused to take the tweet
- 00:26:28down the men went to the publisher of
- 00:26:29closers Nexon and within those 12 hours
- 00:26:32Kim's position had been terminated both
- 00:26:35Nexon and Kim later issued statements
- 00:26:37explaining that the departure was and I
- 00:26:39quote a mutual understanding and Nexon
- 00:26:43said we had already paid for her
- 00:26:45contract and the actress amicably agreed
- 00:26:48to leave does that sound familiar to you
- 00:26:51at all it should we've discussed how
- 00:26:54Japanese companies lay off employees in
- 00:26:56Prior videos and we saw how V Mori in
- 00:26:58the previous video was let go in this
- 00:27:01same way they aren't fired they've left
- 00:27:04amicably of their own accord in any case
- 00:27:08after Kim Jon left Nexon the angry mob
- 00:27:11turned its attention to other women
- 00:27:13artists and voice actresses and
- 00:27:14musicians NPR cites Lee John hang a
- 00:27:18South Korean computer programmer and
- 00:27:19columnist who states that over 80 people
- 00:27:22were badgered into issuing public
- 00:27:24apologies Parina a professor at Chun
- 00:27:27Kong College of cultural Industries is
- 00:27:29also cited by NPR he stated on July 24th
- 00:27:33via Facebook that many people are
- 00:27:35accusing him and his institution of
- 00:27:37being megalia sympathizers for his
- 00:27:40previous social media posts in support
- 00:27:42of feminism women were scared into
- 00:27:45silence and very few elected to speak up
- 00:27:47in defense of megalia the few who did
- 00:27:49would quickly come to regret their
- 00:27:51decision the tsunami of anger moved very
- 00:27:54quickly the Tweet occurred on July 18th
- 00:27:572016 16 the firing occurred 12 hours
- 00:28:00later and the 80 plus public apologies
- 00:28:03for supporting feminism had already
- 00:28:05occurred by July
- 00:28:0729th the anger and division over this
- 00:28:10t-shirt and the subsequent firing were
- 00:28:12so deep and so vast that real life
- 00:28:15political consequences emerged the
- 00:28:17Justice party a left-wing political
- 00:28:19party in South Korea that was founded in
- 00:28:212012 and that is a few seats in the
- 00:28:23National Assembly issued a statement
- 00:28:25criticizing Nexon for the firing of Kim
- 00:28:27Jong one might expect a left-leaning
- 00:28:29political party to be in support of
- 00:28:31feminist causes but the party's support
- 00:28:33of Kim Jong proved to be very internally
- 00:28:36controversial the party's seniors who
- 00:28:38remember have all the power in the
- 00:28:40hierarchy were in support of Kim Jan but
- 00:28:42not all of the junior members were and
- 00:28:44some of those members defected from the
- 00:28:46Justice party and went on strike Korea
- 00:28:49jongan Daily cites the then Justice
- 00:28:51party spokesperson Han Chong Min who
- 00:28:54stated that Korea has not witnessed such
- 00:28:56an incident since the pro-north Korea
- 00:28:59dispute that caused the Democratic labor
- 00:29:01party a predecessor of the Justice party
- 00:29:04to split up in
- 00:29:052008 you heard that right the T-shirt
- 00:29:09with the plot of Frozen on it and the
- 00:29:11Tweet quoting the American children's
- 00:29:12cartoon were equal in political
- 00:29:14consequence to relations with North
- 00:29:17Korea and this was just the beginning
- 00:29:20for you see sometimes support of M
- 00:29:22Magalia is more direct like buying and
- 00:29:24displaying a t-shirt but after this
- 00:29:26incident supporters of megalia and
- 00:29:28ostensibly of feminism had to be more
- 00:29:30discreet in their support what these
- 00:29:33supporters these artists and creators
- 00:29:35did then is they allegedly began to
- 00:29:37incorporate the megalia symbol the pinch
- 00:29:40the little C into media that they were
- 00:29:42producing it's like the world's saddest
- 00:29:45game of we's Waldo and yes britz that is
- 00:29:47indeed what we call we's Wall-E but
- 00:29:50we're not going to get into that in this
- 00:29:51video a piece of media is made and a
- 00:29:54feminist will allegedly sneak in a
- 00:29:56mallia pinch symbol although there is
- 00:29:58limited to no proof that any feminist
- 00:30:00has actually purposefully done this the
- 00:30:03men will nevertheless then scour various
- 00:30:05media find the symbol and demand an
- 00:30:07apology and retribution for the hate
- 00:30:10speech here's the problem though the
- 00:30:12megalia symbol the pinch is also just a
- 00:30:15very common hand gesture look at this
- 00:30:18advertisement for fried chicken for
- 00:30:20example or this advertisement for
- 00:30:23sausage or this photo of YouTuber JJ
- 00:30:25eating a piece of chocolate each of
- 00:30:27these were targeted by Korean men as
- 00:30:29being radical feminist misin interest
- 00:30:32hate speech look at the comments in the
- 00:30:33last video there are many Korean men who
- 00:30:36genuinely felt deeply hurt and offended
- 00:30:39by this symbol appearing on the
- 00:30:40thumbnail it's a symbol of hatred to
- 00:30:42them Ain to a slur drama surrounding
- 00:30:45this megalia symbol making its way into
- 00:30:47media intentionally or otherwise has
- 00:30:50become a relatively common issue in
- 00:30:51South Korea a company publishes some
- 00:30:54advertisement or music video or
- 00:30:55animation a pinch is is discovered the
- 00:30:58men demand an explanation and the hand
- 00:31:00gesture then gets censored and someone
- 00:31:01apologizes gets fired or both but all of
- 00:31:06this historical drama surrounding the
- 00:31:07little sea pales in comparison to what's
- 00:31:10coming a dramatic eruption like no other
- 00:31:14fueled by a half decade of megallion
- 00:31:16paranoia and fresh off the back of the
- 00:31:18Ishmael swimsuit incident a drama
- 00:31:21tsunami that has touched upon virtually
- 00:31:23every single gacha game coming out of
- 00:31:25Korea it started with a single frame of
- 00:31:29Animation in an animated trailer for a
- 00:31:32game that isn't even a gotra
- 00:31:41game there is a new government tonight
- 00:31:43in South Korea Park chongi who ruled the
- 00:31:46country for more than 18 years is dead
- 00:31:48the new government announced that
- 00:31:49President Park was killed by a shot
- 00:31:52fired accidentally by the head of South
- 00:31:54Korea's Central Intelligence Agency at a
- 00:31:56dinner party party Friday night in
- 00:31:58downtown Soul however there are other
- 00:32:00reports that indicate the shooting may
- 00:32:01not have been accidental and Park's
- 00:32:03Chief bodyguard and four others were
- 00:32:06also killed we have two as long as the
- 00:32:09economy thrived so too could park Chung
- 00:32:11he get away with his autocratic rule but
- 00:32:14as the South Korean economy slowed in
- 00:32:16the 70s discontent quickly grew and
- 00:32:19without the legitimacy of growth of
- 00:32:21wealth the repressive actions of Park's
- 00:32:23government became increasingly
- 00:32:25intolerable to the people on October
- 00:32:2716th
- 00:32:281979 students from Busan National
- 00:32:31University organized protests against
- 00:32:33the park regime which quickly grew into
- 00:32:36a mass protest and spread from Busan to
- 00:32:38nearby masan and changwang this Mass
- 00:32:41protest became known as the buma
- 00:32:43uprising and it culminated with Park
- 00:32:45Chung he declaring martial law and
- 00:32:48conducting Mass arrests by October 20th
- 00:32:50the uprising had been quelled and the
- 00:32:53Korean military patrolled the streets of
- 00:32:55their own country and defense of their
- 00:32:58dictator but in a surprise turn of
- 00:33:00events just 6 days after the uprising
- 00:33:03had been quell Park Chung he was
- 00:33:05assassinated by his own director of
- 00:33:08intelligence Kim J gu while having
- 00:33:11dinner at a safe house the motives for
- 00:33:13the assassination are still debated to
- 00:33:15this very day but we needed conjecture
- 00:33:18Kim himself and his final statement at
- 00:33:21trial provided his motives outright in
- 00:33:24his own words he wished to restore
- 00:33:26freedom democracy to prevent further
- 00:33:29Bloodshed of Korean people to prevent
- 00:33:31North Korean aggression to completely
- 00:33:33restore the close relationship Korea had
- 00:33:36with its strong Ally in the United
- 00:33:38States and finally to restore Korea's
- 00:33:41honor in the International Community by
- 00:33:43cleansing it of a dictatorship whatever
- 00:33:46the motives Park chuni dictator for life
- 00:33:49was dead the period of protests and
- 00:33:52attempts at Democratic liberalization
- 00:33:54that followed immediately after Park's
- 00:33:56death was called the Soul spring and it
- 00:33:58lasted from October 26th the date of the
- 00:34:01assassination to May 17th 1980 the date
- 00:34:05on which major general Chand du Juan
- 00:34:07seized power in another military coup
- 00:34:10but the significance of May 17th in
- 00:34:12Korean history is eclipsed by the events
- 00:34:14that would follow the very next day upon
- 00:34:17seizing power chund du Juan immediately
- 00:34:21implemented martial law prohibiting any
- 00:34:23political activities and arresting
- 00:34:25opposition leaders in response to this
- 00:34:28abuse of power students at Chong namam
- 00:34:30National University staged a protest
- 00:34:32which Chand du Juan called the guangju
- 00:34:35riot and he ordered his military to
- 00:34:38violently suppress the protests the
- 00:34:40resulting Massacre is known in Korea
- 00:34:42simply as May 18th the true death toll
- 00:34:45of the massacre as many things are in
- 00:34:47Korea's modern history is still debated
- 00:34:50to this very day in spite of this
- 00:34:53massacre and How Deeply unpopular Chun
- 00:34:56du Juan was Chun was neither
- 00:34:58assassinated nor overthrown the Korean
- 00:35:02economy you see escaped the doldrums of
- 00:35:05the 70s and began to grow again with the
- 00:35:07help of cheap oil and American support
- 00:35:10of the Chun regime which bolstered
- 00:35:12chun's legitimacy you don't have to take
- 00:35:15my word for it consider the words of
- 00:35:17none other than our friend the CIA again
- 00:35:20which writes in this different once
- 00:35:21secret but now Declassified dossier the
- 00:35:24following chun's prospects for getting
- 00:35:26through the next few years without
- 00:35:28serious trouble are good first Chun has
- 00:35:30gained The Reluctant acceptance of the
- 00:35:32general public many working-class
- 00:35:34Koreans attribute the long economic
- 00:35:36recession to the loss of strong
- 00:35:38leadership after the assassination of
- 00:35:40Park and seem willing to give Chun a
- 00:35:42chance later in the same report the CIA
- 00:35:45determines that the public expects Chun
- 00:35:47to solve the country's economic woes the
- 00:35:50fate of the economy will thus be a key
- 00:35:53factor in chun's ability to maintain
- 00:35:55confidence in his leadership the the
- 00:35:56path to Victory seemed obvious then Chon
- 00:35:59must wield the scepter of capital at
- 00:36:02least as well as Park did and better
- 00:36:04than redid and he succeeded in doing
- 00:36:06just that arguably with a little bit of
- 00:36:09help despite seizing power in aoup
- 00:36:12despite massacring his people in the
- 00:36:14streets the legitimacy granted to him by
- 00:36:16his cooperation with capital interests
- 00:36:19and the United States was enough to keep
- 00:36:21him in power yet in so doing by relying
- 00:36:25on Capital interest s the power of the
- 00:36:28cha balls increased once
- 00:36:31again in what was dubbed the trial of
- 00:36:34the century by local media Chon was
- 00:36:37later found guilty of mutiny treason and
- 00:36:39bribery and sentenced to death in their
- 00:36:43verdict judges said Chon's rise to power
- 00:36:45came through illegal means which
- 00:36:47inflicted enormous damage on the people
- 00:36:50the ruling was however commuted by
- 00:36:53Saul's high court in recognition of
- 00:36:55Chon's role in the fast-paced economic
- 00:36:57development of the country Chan
- 00:37:00abdicated his position after just one
- 00:37:027-year term in office as per the rules
- 00:37:04of the 1981 Constitution and the
- 00:37:07presidency passed to chun's chosen
- 00:37:10successor Ro T Wu the first
- 00:37:13democratically elected president of
- 00:37:15South Korea that's right South Korean
- 00:37:17democracy as we know it today began as
- 00:37:20recently as
- 00:37:221989 and row continued the legacy of
- 00:37:25chandu Juan who himself in many ways
- 00:37:27borrowed from Park Chung he who borrowed
- 00:37:30from singman RE wield the scepter build
- 00:37:33the cha balls use the cha balls to build
- 00:37:35the economy and skim a bit of money off
- 00:37:37the top via corruption and chall
- 00:37:39contributions to Illegal slush funds
- 00:37:42only with the passing of each leader the
- 00:37:44power of the cha balls grew and the
- 00:37:47power of the government waned and as the
- 00:37:49government was now a democracy so too
- 00:37:52did the power of the people Wayne
- 00:37:54relative to the power of capital as we
- 00:37:56slowly approach the present day we see a
- 00:37:59pattern emerging in modern Korean
- 00:38:01politics a leader takes power promising
- 00:38:03to reform the economy and uses a
- 00:38:05combination of force and capital to
- 00:38:07maintain his legitimacy in the strict
- 00:38:09Confucian hierarchy of society the
- 00:38:12discontent and anger of the people grows
- 00:38:14to the point where the leader is
- 00:38:16replaced or pressured to step down or
- 00:38:19assassinated as the case may be the
- 00:38:22leader steps down and the next leader
- 00:38:23picks up the scepter of capital hoping
- 00:38:25to achieve what his predecessors could
- 00:38:28not while surrendering a bit of position
- 00:38:30in the hierarchy each time to the
- 00:38:32increasingly powerful cha balls rot Wu
- 00:38:35served his one term as per the
- 00:38:37Constitutional limit and was sentenced
- 00:38:39to 222 years in jail after stepping down
- 00:38:43he was pardoned in December of 1997 the
- 00:38:47arrest and pardon both coming from R's
- 00:38:50successor Kim Young Sam Kim Y young Sam
- 00:38:53came to power on a platform of
- 00:38:55anti-corruption
- 00:38:56he saw the emerging problem in Korean
- 00:38:58politics and was able to capture that
- 00:39:00Zeitgeist the chaals had gone from
- 00:39:02scepter to kingmaker and were quickly
- 00:39:05becoming King it was no longer clear who
- 00:39:08sat at the top of the hierarchy and Kim
- 00:39:10intended to resolve that issue but the
- 00:39:12roots of the cha balls were too deep
- 00:39:14into the government already and despite
- 00:39:16running on a platform to reform the cha
- 00:39:18balls and Purge corruption Kim's
- 00:39:20government and indeed his own son were
- 00:39:23caught up in bribery and Corruption
- 00:39:25scandals and what would become known as
- 00:39:27the Hano Scandal wherein South Korea's
- 00:39:31then 14th largest cha ball Hano Iron and
- 00:39:34Steel allegedly used Kickbacks and
- 00:39:36bribes to get officials in the Kim
- 00:39:39government to put pressure on banks to
- 00:39:40lend money to Hano as such despite
- 00:39:43having only $100 million in capital Hano
- 00:39:47received nearly $6 billion in loans that
- 00:39:51it could not and arguably never intended
- 00:39:54to pay back adjusted for inflation
- 00:39:57that's nearly $12 billion as of January
- 00:40:012024 Hano unable to pay back the loans
- 00:40:03and unable to secure cash from even
- 00:40:05larger loans collapsed into bankruptcy
- 00:40:08which triggered a Cascade of other chall
- 00:40:10bankruptcies and the discovery of more
- 00:40:12corruption scandals plummeting Korea
- 00:40:14into economic crisis just as the greater
- 00:40:181997 Asian financial crisis reared its
- 00:40:21ugly head Kim Young Sam's time in office
- 00:40:24concluded on February 24th 1998 with a
- 00:40:29rock bottom approval rating of
- 00:40:326% his attempt to reform the cha balls
- 00:40:35didn't just backfire it exploded in his
- 00:40:38face and dragged him under kimyong Sam
- 00:40:41was followed by two reformers Kim de
- 00:40:43Jang and Ruan Each of which also
- 00:40:45attempted to reign in the cha balls and
- 00:40:48Each of which also left office in the
- 00:40:49wake of corruption scandals now don't
- 00:40:52get me wrong Kim de Jang and Ro muan are
- 00:40:54generally considered amongst the best of
- 00:40:56Korea's presidents but they were each in
- 00:40:59their own ways undone by the tendrils of
- 00:41:01corruption Kim de Jung significantly
- 00:41:03improved relations between North and
- 00:41:05South Korea he was also responsible for
- 00:41:07substantial economic reforms which
- 00:41:10helped to write the Korean economy after
- 00:41:12the Asian financial crisis he wielded
- 00:41:14the scepter of capital very well but in
- 00:41:16doing so also substantially empowered
- 00:41:18the cha balls since the economy was
- 00:41:20built on the backs of the cha balls
- 00:41:22saving the economy meant conceding and
- 00:41:23shoveling money into the very
- 00:41:25organizations responsible for derailing
- 00:41:27the economy to begin with Kim de Jung
- 00:41:30didn't have much of a choice though it
- 00:41:31was that or have the economy deteriorate
- 00:41:33further and the latter was Unthinkable
- 00:41:35Kim dejung himself was not directly
- 00:41:37involved in any corruption Scandal but
- 00:41:39his son Kim Hong was arrested for
- 00:41:42receiving millions of dollars in bribes
- 00:41:45from a number of different cha balls
- 00:41:46including Hundai and Samsung the story
- 00:41:50of Kim de Jung's successor Ro muhan is a
- 00:41:53sad one he also ran on a platform of
- 00:41:56Progressive reform and anti-corruption
- 00:41:57he ambitiously sought to balance
- 00:42:00National development to assist poorer
- 00:42:02regions stabilize relations with North
- 00:42:04Korea reformed the education and tax
- 00:42:06system and also end the government's
- 00:42:08pervasive corruption and intermingling
- 00:42:10with the cha balls but he was fought
- 00:42:12tooth and nail by the anti-reform
- 00:42:15opposition who went so far as to attempt
- 00:42:17a spous impeachment which had the
- 00:42:19opposite effect actually boosting Rose's
- 00:42:21popularity instead of tanking it Rose
- 00:42:25attempts to reign in the ha balls also
- 00:42:27caused some economic distress he was
- 00:42:30forced to make several unpopular
- 00:42:32decisions which in the longer term may
- 00:42:33have corrected the course of the Korean
- 00:42:35economy but in the short term damaged
- 00:42:38the profits of the wealthy and powerful
- 00:42:40and despite being very anti-corruption
- 00:42:42and genuinely attempting to reform the
- 00:42:44system row also failed to avoid
- 00:42:47corruption in his own government ruan's
- 00:42:50older brother Ro gun pong was sentenced
- 00:42:52to 2 and A2 years imprisonment having
- 00:42:54been indicted on charges of receiving
- 00:42:56billions of Korean wan in exchange for
- 00:42:58helping the state-run national
- 00:43:00agricultural Cooperative Federation
- 00:43:02better known as nongap take over song
- 00:43:04Securities Co amongst other allegations
- 00:43:07of corrupt Behavior nowadays song
- 00:43:10Securities is better known as NH
- 00:43:12investment and securities Co and despite
- 00:43:15still being tied to nup is deeply
- 00:43:17intertwined with the cha balls in a way
- 00:43:19that is inscrutable to the average
- 00:43:21person other members of rose's staff and
- 00:43:24family were also investigated on charges
- 00:43:25of coruption with row himself even
- 00:43:27accused of corruption though those
- 00:43:29charges were of dubious veracity
- 00:43:31although the final tally of alleged
- 00:43:32corruption was rather Limited in
- 00:43:34comparison to Row's predecessors the
- 00:43:37fact of the matter remained even Row the
- 00:43:39most serious most idealistic reformer
- 00:43:41and anti-corruption Advocate that South
- 00:43:44Korean politics had ever brought into
- 00:43:46power was not immune to corruption and
- 00:43:48the Insidious power of the challs row
- 00:43:51stepped down in 2007 and his chosen
- 00:43:54successor Chun Don young was was
- 00:43:56defeated in a Landslide by lie yach the
- 00:43:59former CEO of the chal Hundai
- 00:44:01engineering and construction on May 23rd
- 00:44:052009 Ro muhan in retirement now at his
- 00:44:09home in rural bonha but still under
- 00:44:11investigation for corruption took his
- 00:44:14own life leaping off a 45 m 150 ft Cliff
- 00:44:18to his death he left a suicide note
- 00:44:21which read in part I am in debt to so
- 00:44:25many people
- 00:44:26I have caused too great a burden to be
- 00:44:28placed upon them I can't begin to Fathom
- 00:44:31the countless agonies down the road the
- 00:44:35tragic suicide of row pursuant to
- 00:44:37allegations of corruption was sadly just
- 00:44:40one of many similar suicides in just
- 00:44:43that period alone between 2008 and 2009
- 00:44:47South Korea also saw the corruption
- 00:44:49investigation related government
- 00:44:50official suicides of Kim Young Chu a
- 00:44:53former Secretary of a prime minister an
- 00:44:56sangyong the former mayor of Busan Park
- 00:44:59teong the former government of Jola
- 00:45:01Province and oop the then mayor of
- 00:45:04yangan City Ro's popularity shot up
- 00:45:07after his suicide and today Ro muan is
- 00:45:10remembered as a president who truly
- 00:45:12cared about the people an idealist who
- 00:45:14worked a great deal to improve human
- 00:45:16rights in Korea and who died an
- 00:45:18ignominious death after being subject to
- 00:45:20dubious allegations and investigations
- 00:45:22into corruption by ironically an
- 00:45:25opposition fun and empowered by the very
- 00:45:27cha balls responsible for said
- 00:45:29corruption we are closing in now on the
- 00:45:31present day but if you've been following
- 00:45:33along I suspect that you can already see
- 00:45:36where this story is going there is no
- 00:45:38such thing as power in South Korea
- 00:45:40without the involvement of CH balls
- 00:45:42capital is no longer merely the
- 00:45:44kingmaker it is the king the emperor the
- 00:45:49top of the hierarchy and not even the
- 00:45:52most idealistic reformers can hope to
- 00:45:55fight against it the power of the chaals
- 00:45:59of capital is so Insidious so pervasive
- 00:46:03that even if one isn't corrupt
- 00:46:06themselves one's cabinet one's staff
- 00:46:09one's friends one's own family can still
- 00:46:14be turned with the right
- 00:46:19incentives on or about November 23rd
- 00:46:232023 next on the developer and publisher
- 00:46:26of maple story the very same Nexon who
- 00:46:28fired or otherwise let go of voice
- 00:46:30actress Kim Jon released an animated
- 00:46:33trailer promoting an important new patch
- 00:46:36which remastered the game's Angelic
- 00:46:37Buster class the trailer is beautifully
- 00:46:40animated and terribly cute but it would
- 00:46:43soon find itself at the very center of a
- 00:46:45new crisis the Korean gacha men still on
- 00:46:48high alert due to the recency of the
- 00:46:49ishma wets suit incident discovered a
- 00:46:52few frames of Animation in which Angelic
- 00:46:54Buster appeared to be making the
- 00:46:56pinching symbol of megalia the little C
- 00:46:59you can see it for one frame in the
- 00:47:00intro of the animation and once more
- 00:47:02later as Angelic Buster is spinning a
- 00:47:05firestorm erupts and a similar song and
- 00:47:08dance occurs this briefly visible
- 00:47:10pinching motion must be the work of a
- 00:47:12radical feminist as only a radical
- 00:47:15feminist would include this dog whistle
- 00:47:17this anti-male hate speech slur in an
- 00:47:21animation all eyes were on the animation
- 00:47:24studio that created the trailer studio
- 00:47:26poery also known as Studio root and as
- 00:47:28the chauvinists dug deeper looking into
- 00:47:30Studio Po's past animations something
- 00:47:33became very clear the hand pinch signs
- 00:47:36were everywhere in Korean games ranging
- 00:47:39from maple story to Blue archive from
- 00:47:42epic 7 to dungeon fighter where Studio
- 00:47:44puuri was there too was the pinch the
- 00:47:48first Target that the angry mob lashed
- 00:47:50out at was n the vocalist for the song
- 00:47:53in the animation she had retweeted old
- 00:47:56tweets that were in support of Kim Jong
- 00:47:57back in 2016 which was enough to paint
- 00:48:01her as a mingist a manher but Nar didn't
- 00:48:04draw anything she was a vocalist not an
- 00:48:06animator so someone else put the pinch
- 00:48:09into the animation right the next Target
- 00:48:11was a woman named teso an animator and
- 00:48:14team leader at Studio PTI she had an old
- 00:48:17tweet in which she stated that she would
- 00:48:19never stop being a feminist even though
- 00:48:21she'd had her social media accounts
- 00:48:23blocked for being offensive towards men
- 00:48:26she stated further that she will always
- 00:48:28continue to be a feminist stealthily and
- 00:48:30subtly most to damning of all she also
- 00:48:33liked a tweet that was critical of
- 00:48:36limbus company's firing of Vel Mory
- 00:48:39Nexon and Studio paputi were inundated
- 00:48:41with angry complaints and as was the
- 00:48:44case with nexxon in 2016 and with limbus
- 00:48:46company both Nexon and Studio puuri
- 00:48:49immediately capitulated the Angelic
- 00:48:51Buster trailer was released on November
- 00:48:5323rd by 2 a.m. on November mber 25th
- 00:48:56just 2 days after the initial trailer
- 00:48:58was released maple story dungeon Fighter
- 00:49:01blue archive and other implicated games
- 00:49:03each offered an apology validating the
- 00:49:06claims being made that they had located
- 00:49:09inappropriate expressions and that they
- 00:49:11would take necessary action Kim Chong
- 00:49:14soop the director of maple story at
- 00:49:16Nexon held a live stream press
- 00:49:19conference in which he reassured the
- 00:49:21angry maple story players that we will
- 00:49:24never allow a culture that publicly
- 00:49:26expresses hatred towards others and
- 00:49:29those who enjoy such a culture to defame
- 00:49:32maple story on November 26th Studio
- 00:49:35puuri published its own apology in which
- 00:49:38it appeared to admit fault and offered
- 00:49:40the angry mob exactly what it wished for
- 00:49:42complete and utter capitulation and
- 00:49:45validation of their claims of Foul Play
- 00:49:48the target of the mob's anger teso was
- 00:49:50forbidden from working on further
- 00:49:52promotional videos this apology was
- 00:49:54deemed insufficient though as Tesa was
- 00:49:56not outright fired Studio puu was
- 00:49:59accused of a false plation an angry mob
- 00:50:02allegedly went to their offices taking
- 00:50:04pictures and spying on their employees
- 00:50:06the situation was getting dangerous and
- 00:50:08Studio PTI could do no more without
- 00:50:10risking their safety on November 27th
- 00:50:12Studio puuy issued a second apology and
- 00:50:15stated that the animator in question
- 00:50:17teso would not be fired but would
- 00:50:19instead resign this apology and the
- 00:50:22firing was quickly retracted but it was
- 00:50:25too late the damage was
- 00:50:28done you can imagine what happened
- 00:50:44[Music]
- 00:50:54next
- 00:51:24once again the controversy was so severe
- 00:51:27that it made Korean national news with a
- 00:51:29much more in-depth segment this time on
- 00:51:32November 30th a week after the Angelic
- 00:51:35Buster trailer was released 3 days after
- 00:51:37teso's resignation an incredibly
- 00:51:40unsurprising Discovery was made after a
- 00:51:43media investigation it was reported that
- 00:51:45the animator who drew the controversial
- 00:51:47Angelic Buster scenes was a man in his
- 00:51:5040s quoting now a major newspaper konang
- 00:51:54Shin Moon's article Maple index finger
- 00:51:56storyboard drawn by a man as a result of
- 00:51:59coverage by The kyong Hang Shin moon on
- 00:52:01the 30th it was confirmed that the
- 00:52:03original story board for the video in
- 00:52:05question was handled by Mr a a male
- 00:52:08animator in his 40s from a company other
- 00:52:11than Studio POI Mr a was an additional
- 00:52:14Manpower sought due to the Urgent
- 00:52:16deadline presented by Nexon basically
- 00:52:19everyone involved in this animation it
- 00:52:21turns out was male and Industry
- 00:52:23officials found that it was impossible I
- 00:52:25for a malicious edit to have occurred
- 00:52:27adding a controversial frame but that
- 00:52:29didn't stop the harassment and the kyong
- 00:52:31kyong shinmon confirms that Mr a the
- 00:52:33artist and Mr B the male supervisor in
- 00:52:35his 50s were both harassed over their
- 00:52:39involvement but just like with Vel Mory
- 00:52:42it didn't matter anymore to the men that
- 00:52:44teso had nothing to do with the finger
- 00:52:46pinch in the Angelic Buster trailer if
- 00:52:48Studio py has a feminist working in
- 00:52:50their midst one who has a stated
- 00:52:52intention to do feminist things nothing
- 00:52:55that they say can be trusted the women
- 00:52:57staged protests in front of nexon's
- 00:52:59offices and the men retaliated with
- 00:53:01threats of violence on social media
- 00:53:03Studio Po's employees were harassed
- 00:53:05endlessly allegedly receiving threats
- 00:53:07and hate messages and even having their
- 00:53:08personal information shared online Doo
- 00:53:12herself also had her personal
- 00:53:14information and phone number leaked to
- 00:53:15the public by Angry Men she became a
- 00:53:17victim of cyber bullying in the form of
- 00:53:20sexual harassment and death threats all
- 00:53:22over some retweets and allegations
- 00:53:25surrounding art she didn't actually draw
- 00:53:28once again an innocent woman had been
- 00:53:30targeted and an entire company had been
- 00:53:31brought to heal over something painfully
- 00:53:34trivial a few frames of a hand gesture
- 00:53:36in an animated trailer with no bad
- 00:53:38intentions behind it but unlike the
- 00:53:40ishma swimsuit incident this time the
- 00:53:43drama broke containment the angry men
- 00:53:46turned their attention to other games
- 00:53:47and as many of them came from the gacha
- 00:53:49game Community their targets were
- 00:53:51disproportionately gacha games they
- 00:53:53began tearing apart every single
- 00:53:55animated trailer every frame of art
- 00:53:57searching for the megalia pinch and very
- 00:53:59naturally they found many such pinches
- 00:54:02the dev teams of those games were
- 00:54:04subjected to similar harassment until
- 00:54:05they too capitulated editing or removing
- 00:54:08any instance of art with a possible
- 00:54:10finger pinch from the Korean versions of
- 00:54:12their games making concessions in order
- 00:54:14to avoid further harassment and violence
- 00:54:17some Dev teams such as the one at Neo's
- 00:54:20Brown dust 2 even acted preemptively
- 00:54:23removing any art that could even potten
- 00:54:25eventually resemble the megallion C
- 00:54:27before negative attention found them I
- 00:54:29know what most of you are thinking this
- 00:54:31is insane this is crazy first these men
- 00:54:34rided over a wet suit and now they're
- 00:54:37forcing Dev team after Dev team
- 00:54:38Corporation after Corporation to
- 00:54:40apologize and capitulate over anything
- 00:54:42even vaguely resembling an index finger
- 00:54:45and thumb forming a c a position which
- 00:54:49need I remind you is the resting
- 00:54:51position of the hand and is thereby
- 00:54:54virtually
- 00:54:55unavoidable it's easy to look at a
- 00:54:57situation like this and feel dumbfounded
- 00:54:59as we will see even other gacha playing
- 00:55:01men sharing similar prant interests and
- 00:55:04culturally adjacent countries like China
- 00:55:07and Japan are mystified by the extremism
- 00:55:11of the Korean men but in truth the anger
- 00:55:14being vented the frustrations being
- 00:55:16expressed towards project Moon and Vel
- 00:55:19Mori and Studio POI and Tao they aren't
- 00:55:22really about swimsuits or finger pinches
- 00:55:25or hate symbols before we wrap up our
- 00:55:28gotra drama story let's finally talk
- 00:55:31about what life is like in modern South
- 00:55:35Korea in Confucianism but especially
- 00:55:39neoc Confucianism if Society is
- 00:55:42dysfunctional if Society is unharmonious
- 00:55:45if it is discordant some part of the
- 00:55:48system some level of the hierarchy must
- 00:55:50be responsible for that Discord think
- 00:55:53back to our Korean Airlines story from
- 00:55:56part one if the Glide slope instrument
- 00:55:59is broken it must be a GI on the ground
- 00:56:02who is responsible in Confucian Society
- 00:56:05if disharmony arises ideally whichever
- 00:56:08level of the hierarchy is responsible
- 00:56:10for said disharmony is moved back to the
- 00:56:13righteous and harmonious course by the
- 00:56:15level of hierarchy directly above them
- 00:56:17employees are corrected by their bosses
- 00:56:20children by their parents if the higher
- 00:56:22level fails at doing that the level
- 00:56:24above them then has the responsibility
- 00:56:27to take over if each layer continues to
- 00:56:29fail eventually the emperor steers the
- 00:56:32entire ship of society in the direction
- 00:56:34that can bring it back to Harmony and
- 00:56:36Order hopefully integrating any
- 00:56:38necessary social change in the process
- 00:56:41but in an extremely neoc Confucian State
- 00:56:44a status quo can emerge which so
- 00:56:47strongly emphasizes Harmony in order
- 00:56:49that it rejects social change causing
- 00:56:51Society to stagnate when the top of the
- 00:56:54hierarchy is especially bureaucratic or
- 00:56:56incompetent or corrupt or self-serving
- 00:56:59disorder gets enveloped by obfuscation
- 00:57:02and the underlying problems never get
- 00:57:04fixed the problem becomes enveloped
- 00:57:07mired in nonsense and misinformation and
- 00:57:10moving gold posts and bureaucracy at the
- 00:57:13end of all the fighting and mess social
- 00:57:15harmony is pulled back into its place
- 00:57:17without the requisite social change such
- 00:57:20that the underlying issues do not get
- 00:57:23solved this Behavior goes goes down the
- 00:57:25ladder from the top the top of the
- 00:57:26hierarchy does this to the middle and
- 00:57:28the middle does this to the bottom each
- 00:57:30following the lead of the other in the
- 00:57:32confusion manner these issues don't go
- 00:57:34away though they're still there they
- 00:57:37merely build intention if each time a
- 00:57:40conflict arises it is suppressed again
- 00:57:43without resolution the tension and
- 00:57:45subsequent conflict grows larger and
- 00:57:47larger and larger until it eventually
- 00:57:50breaks out of the control of the state
- 00:57:52of the society entirely of the top of
- 00:57:54the high hierarchy and into open Civil
- 00:58:00War South Korea has the highest suicide
- 00:58:03rate in the developed world as per the
- 00:58:06World Health organization's 2019
- 00:58:08estimates if you look exclusively at the
- 00:58:11suicide rate amongst women you will find
- 00:58:13that South Korea's suicide rate for
- 00:58:15women is the fourth worst of all
- 00:58:19countries in the world surpassing even
- 00:58:22many struggling developing nations Japan
- 00:58:25is somewhat notorious in the West for
- 00:58:26its problems surrounding depression and
- 00:58:28suicide but in South Korea women commit
- 00:58:31suicide at twice the rate of women in
- 00:58:34Japan in 2019 keep in mind that this is
- 00:58:38before covid a survey conducted by hanor
- 00:58:41newspaper showed that amongst young
- 00:58:43Koreans between the ages of 19 and 34
- 00:58:4783% of young women and 78% of young men
- 00:58:52View South Korea as a living
- 00:58:55hell nearly 80% of young women and 72%
- 00:59:00of young men want to leave South Korea
- 00:59:02and this is because putting aside any
- 00:59:04gender considerations for the moment the
- 00:59:06experiences of Korean young people are
- 00:59:09incredibly Soul crushing this article in
- 00:59:12the Korea Herald why Koreans want to
- 00:59:15leave hell Jan quotes sociology
- 00:59:17Professor Lee bonon who states that the
- 00:59:20phenomenon is a reflection of South
- 00:59:22Koreans of all ages struggling to
- 00:59:25survive amid a lack of jobs and unstable
- 00:59:28livelihoods there's an inequality of
- 00:59:31opportunity they feel like the playing
- 00:59:33field is uneven in the first place and
- 00:59:35their efforts will not pay off
- 00:59:38competition in Korea is so tough so
- 00:59:40grueling that what 20 years ago one
- 00:59:43might have considered the bare minimum
- 00:59:44is now hyperco competitive and one who
- 00:59:47is lower on the hierarchy which in
- 00:59:49Confucianism should be most people have
- 00:59:52to overcome both that competition and
- 00:59:54the enormous advantages of the
- 00:59:56privileged people in Korean Society to
- 00:59:58get anywhere or be anyone if you watch
- 01:00:01the jrpg video you might recall that
- 01:00:03Japan's economy is controlled in large
- 01:00:05part by Mega conglomerates with enormous
- 01:00:07political power called the ketsu in
- 01:00:09South Korea the situation is even more
- 01:00:12severe the cha balls are very much like
- 01:00:14the KATU they are thick webs of
- 01:00:16interwoven business relationships but
- 01:00:18even more exclusive as many of them are
- 01:00:21families built quite literally in the
- 01:00:22Confucian style the top 10 cha balls in
- 01:00:25South Korea account for nearly 60% of
- 01:00:28the country's GDP another nearly 25% is
- 01:00:31accounted for by the remaining 50 Samad
- 01:00:34cha balls altogether 80 to 85% of South
- 01:00:38Korea's GDP is controlled by about 64
- 01:00:41families to give you an idea of how
- 01:00:44Preposterous these numbers are when the
- 01:00:47United States broke up Standard Oil you
- 01:00:49know Rockefeller the octopus well
- 01:00:52Standard Oil accounted for only 1
- 01:00:557% of the US GDP at the time of its
- 01:00:58breakup in 2022 Samsung's Revenue by
- 01:01:01itself was a little over 20% of South
- 01:01:05Korea's GDP the margin of error in the
- 01:01:08estimate is larger than standard oil's
- 01:01:11entire percentage and in spite of the
- 01:01:13vast wealth here the money is not
- 01:01:15trickling down for most young people
- 01:01:18there is simply not enough opportunity
- 01:01:20to go around and the best that one can
- 01:01:23look forward to is to work at a cha ball
- 01:01:25perhaps and be treated like a wage slave
- 01:01:28the system is untenable and
- 01:01:30unsustainable you have to have the best
- 01:01:32grades the most handsome or beautiful
- 01:01:33appearance the most socially correct
- 01:01:35demeanor in order to compete for an Ever
- 01:01:37shrinking slice of the pie the common
- 01:01:40people are desperate as we've seen prior
- 01:01:44governments have promised crackdowns on
- 01:01:46the chables have promised economic
- 01:01:48reform which never materialized in a
- 01:01:50meaningful way due to How Deeply the cha
- 01:01:52balls have sunk their Roots into the the
- 01:01:54South Korean political apparatus
- 01:01:56attempting to so much as touch those
- 01:01:58routs has had massive Economic
- 01:02:00Consequences and meaningfully disarming
- 01:02:02the cha balls at this point could hoist
- 01:02:04all of South Korean Society along with
- 01:02:08them worse yet consider Korea's problem
- 01:02:10with age remember what I said in part
- 01:02:13one about how hierarchy is powerfully
- 01:02:15determined by your age how you'll be
- 01:02:17asked how old you are to determine where
- 01:02:19you belong in the pecking order have you
- 01:02:21ever worked in a company where three
- 01:02:23managers are in charge of micromanaging
- 01:02:25one employee well young Koreans don't
- 01:02:28just have to put up with that Dynamic at
- 01:02:30work they have to endure it in every
- 01:02:32facet of their lives Korea has fewer and
- 01:02:35fewer young people and an enormous
- 01:02:37elderly population that places massive
- 01:02:40expectations often in conflicting ways
- 01:02:43on young men and young women
- 01:02:45expectations that are impossible to meet
- 01:02:47given the current economic realities of
- 01:02:50South Korea and the governmental capture
- 01:02:52of the cha balls endless ly siphoning
- 01:02:55the nation's wealth away from the
- 01:02:56populace and into exclusive powerful cha
- 01:02:59ball families or corrupt politicians and
- 01:03:02these young people must now also balance
- 01:03:05the cost of an aging Society against
- 01:03:07their own limited avenues for
- 01:03:09opportunity or
- 01:03:11self-realization Korean young people
- 01:03:13then have been thrust into an impossible
- 01:03:15situation their incredibly confucianist
- 01:03:17Society has been captured by the cha
- 01:03:19balls an immortal Emperor with roots
- 01:03:22that dig down very deep into each level
- 01:03:24the hierarchy young people are fiercely
- 01:03:27competing with each other over ever
- 01:03:28decreasing opportunity they are becoming
- 01:03:30increasingly desperate and the problems
- 01:03:33they face are incredibly difficult to
- 01:03:34even understand never mind change opusc
- 01:03:38as they are in that confusion way they
- 01:03:41are miserable and the misery in their
- 01:03:44lives seems completely outside of their
- 01:03:47control with this General primer on the
- 01:03:50experiences of young people in South
- 01:03:52Korea let us also now break down what
- 01:03:55life is like for each gender in this
- 01:03:57gender War armed as we are now with the
- 01:04:00context necessary to understand just how
- 01:04:03serious and deeply rooted these problems
- 01:04:07truly
- 01:04:10are it's hard to be a man in Korea but
- 01:04:14doubly so to be a young man society
- 01:04:18places enormous expectations upon you
- 01:04:20and if you fail to live up to them you
- 01:04:22are treated not as a human being with
- 01:04:24dreams and aspirations and hopes but as
- 01:04:27a disgrace a black sheep a monster the
- 01:04:32generations immediately before you
- 01:04:33managed to live up to expectations
- 01:04:35because expectations were both much
- 01:04:38lower then and many of them experienced
- 01:04:40Korea's economic Miracle they
- 01:04:42experienced unparalleled growth and so
- 01:04:44their expectations are both higher and
- 01:04:46they were able themselves to carry the
- 01:04:48expectations of Korea's Ultra
- 01:04:50confucianist demands upon their backs
- 01:04:53but you you are stuck in an era of
- 01:04:56stagnation you are one Cog in an
- 01:04:58enormous machine competing against
- 01:05:00countless other cogs for a pittance of
- 01:05:02coin and ambitiously a shred of respect
- 01:05:06of self-worth of belonging but instead
- 01:05:09of respect you are awarded with
- 01:05:11disrespect for your efforts disrespect
- 01:05:14from your elders disrespect from your
- 01:05:16peers disrespect even from your
- 01:05:20subordinates every year hundreds of
- 01:05:23thousands of Korean young men like
- 01:05:24yourself are conscripted against their
- 01:05:26will into the military if you choose not
- 01:05:29to serve you might face jail time future
- 01:05:31employers might refuse to hire you if
- 01:05:33they see you didn't do your time in the
- 01:05:35military these two years are treated
- 01:05:37less like actual time in the military
- 01:05:39and more like a hazing ritual cruel and
- 01:05:41grueling for absolutely no good reason
- 01:05:44once you get out of the military you
- 01:05:45then have to return to civilian life and
- 01:05:47find jobs that can support a whole
- 01:05:48family on your own you have to run the
- 01:05:51gauntlet and wear the suits and suffer
- 01:05:53the indignity of slavik labor and that's
- 01:05:55the best case scenario for you if you
- 01:05:58aren't born into a position of privilege
- 01:06:00if you aren't born into such a position
- 01:06:01of privilege where you can't leverage
- 01:06:04your family's resources or Prestige or
- 01:06:06network then you must carry all of these
- 01:06:08expectations as well as a 10 ton weight
- 01:06:11of societal shame at having not been
- 01:06:13able to succeed all of these
- 01:06:15expectations are levied on men and none
- 01:06:17are leved on women women seem to have it
- 01:06:19so easy they just have to look good and
- 01:06:22stay quiet and cook the meals that's all
- 01:06:24that Society expects of them and they
- 01:06:26can't even do just that while we men are
- 01:06:28expected to do everything else to
- 01:06:30provide for the family to build a
- 01:06:31generational wealth to pay for the dates
- 01:06:33to pay for the places the women live and
- 01:06:35the clothes they wear and the food they
- 01:06:36eat to serve in the military against our
- 01:06:38will all while being disrespected by
- 01:06:41everyone around us by the elderly who
- 01:06:44don't understand why we aren't doing as
- 01:06:46well as they did by foreigners who don't
- 01:06:48understand the expectations our society
- 01:06:50places on us and by our own women who
- 01:06:54seem to expect more from us than what we
- 01:06:56can provide and accuse us of crimes that
- 01:06:59we aren't committing something must be
- 01:07:01wrong the system is failing us because
- 01:07:03the pieces aren't in the right place
- 01:07:05what could it be the people are
- 01:07:06subordinate to the government the sons
- 01:07:08are subordinate to their fathers the
- 01:07:10younger are subordinate to their elders
- 01:07:12but the women they want more they expect
- 01:07:15more and they offer disrespect instead
- 01:07:18of appreciation for the suffering we
- 01:07:20must endure on their behalf why do the
- 01:07:22women insist on piling more onto us we
- 01:07:26cannot take anymore our backs are
- 01:07:28breaking we are at the point of Madness
- 01:07:31we cannot tolerate a single straw
- 01:07:33further not one more step and so every
- 01:07:36step every encroachment must be met with
- 01:07:39overwhelming Force must be pushed back
- 01:07:42into its place to preserve Society to
- 01:07:44preserve our values to preserve our
- 01:07:46sanity it's not really about a wet suit
- 01:07:49or anything else it's about Twitter
- 01:07:50girls who don't even play the game
- 01:07:52having more say over its art and
- 01:07:53character character development than we
- 01:07:55do when we are the ones playing the
- 01:07:57games and contributing the funds and not
- 01:07:59them it's about being made subordinate
- 01:08:01to the whims of women Even in our male
- 01:08:04safe spaces it's not really about
- 01:08:06megalia or a little pinch causing us
- 01:08:08some offense over genitalia it's what
- 01:08:10the pinch represents disrespect at a
- 01:08:13point where we are already disrespected
- 01:08:16to the maximum amount by everyone around
- 01:08:19us it's about a nonsensical Rebellion
- 01:08:21against the system by women who have the
- 01:08:23easiest role in the hierarchy eroding
- 01:08:25the very strengths that Empower Korean
- 01:08:27society and make its cultural exports
- 01:08:29the Envy of the world we're hurting and
- 01:08:31we're not being heard why can't women
- 01:08:34just understand that they have it easy
- 01:08:36and at the very least stay quiet if they
- 01:08:38can't be
- 01:08:42respectful it does suck to be a man in
- 01:08:45Korea not to give away too much about
- 01:08:47myself but my own culture is not that
- 01:08:49dissimilar to yours and I get it there
- 01:08:51are a lot of responsibilities that we
- 01:08:54must bear as men there are expectations
- 01:08:57levied on us that we can't meet because
- 01:08:59the world prohibits us from meeting them
- 01:09:00and then we are blamed for the world
- 01:09:03Korean Society is dehumanizing you may
- 01:09:05think to yourself you men well some of
- 01:09:07the actions we take are a bit over the
- 01:09:09top but the ends justify the means we
- 01:09:12can't take anymore it's human nature to
- 01:09:14judge oneself by one's intentions and
- 01:09:17others by their actions when we see a
- 01:09:20woman protesting the art of a game they
- 01:09:21don't even play or sneaking offensive
- 01:09:23gestures into art we see their extremist
- 01:09:26actions when we invade the offices of a
- 01:09:29developer when we go after an artist on
- 01:09:31Twitter we judge ourselves by our
- 01:09:33intentions sure the artist is the wrong
- 01:09:35artist but she's still a feminist and
- 01:09:37our intentions matter not our actions I
- 01:09:41want you just for a moment to join me
- 01:09:43and look at the intentions of the young
- 01:09:45women in your Society because just as
- 01:09:47Korean society places an enormous burden
- 01:09:49of expectations upon you the men your
- 01:09:52women also suffer from expectations ones
- 01:09:55that you might not even be aware of you
- 01:09:58say Korean girls have it easy because
- 01:10:00they don't have to make money as that's
- 01:10:01the man's job well they'd like to but
- 01:10:04that itself is also a societal
- 01:10:06expectation that many of these women are
- 01:10:08trying to break free of in South Korea
- 01:10:10labor force participation by women is
- 01:10:12nearly the lowest among oecd countries
- 01:10:15but the gender pay Gap in South Korea is
- 01:10:17not amongst the worst it is the actual
- 01:10:20worst amongst all oecd countries you
- 01:10:23University's Journal of Korean studies
- 01:10:25reports that in Korea in 2020 the median
- 01:10:28earnings of women working full-time was
- 01:10:3032% lower than men's which is a much
- 01:10:34larger Gap than the oecd average of
- 01:10:3812.5% women in Korea hold only 10% of
- 01:10:41managerial positions in the private
- 01:10:42sector when the average for oecd
- 01:10:44countries is 30% and perhaps most
- 01:10:47seriously of all a disproportionately
- 01:10:49high number of women work in precarious
- 01:10:51jobs that pay low wages and provide few
- 01:10:53employee benefits little job security
- 01:10:56and limited labor rights which you've
- 01:10:57seen firsthand as a result of your
- 01:11:00protests when the women protest your
- 01:11:02treatment of vmore or teso they aren't
- 01:11:04protesting a swimsuit or a hand signal
- 01:11:06either they want the opportunity to work
- 01:11:08and receive equal pay and work in jobs
- 01:11:10that aren't so-called precarious jobs
- 01:11:13with low wages and limited labor rights
- 01:11:15they want to be artists and developers
- 01:11:17without fear they want to be able to
- 01:11:18engage in the same free speech that you
- 01:11:20do without being fired or forcibly
- 01:11:22resigned or harassed
- 01:11:24actions and intentions and ultimately
- 01:11:27the end result is if the women are
- 01:11:29allowed to work and have Labor
- 01:11:30protections and have a better fairer
- 01:11:32wage your burden your expectations
- 01:11:34become lighter because you no longer
- 01:11:36have to be the sole bread winner you
- 01:11:38don't have to be the one that always
- 01:11:40gets a high-paying job to cover the cost
- 01:11:42of two people because now the women can
- 01:11:43also get a job and you can have two
- 01:11:45medium paying jobs reducing the burden
- 01:11:48on everyone but I know it's not that
- 01:11:50simple that's not really a solution at
- 01:11:52all is it what good is having two jobs
- 01:11:55if everyone still suffers there are
- 01:11:57greater far more Insidious systematic
- 01:12:00problems socioeconomic problems that are
- 01:12:03at the core of what South Korea is built
- 01:12:06into the country from the moment of its
- 01:12:08Inception it won't be easy to solve
- 01:12:11these issues there is no simple fix and
- 01:12:14anyone who tells you otherwise is lying
- 01:12:17to your face but if there is a way to
- 01:12:20solve these issues if there is some way
- 01:12:22to overcome these problems you will have
- 01:12:25to do it together both of you have the
- 01:12:28same intentions to lower the burdens of
- 01:12:30expectation that society places on you
- 01:12:32and to reassert some control over your
- 01:12:35lives to have the Liberty to be people
- 01:12:37with meaningful relationships and
- 01:12:39economic security and families instead
- 01:12:41of being cogs in a machine that produces
- 01:12:43for others that what you cannot have for
- 01:12:46yourselves in a survey conducted by Pew
- 01:12:48research in 2016 it was found that about
- 01:12:507% of American women have received
- 01:12:52cosmetic surgery the percentage of
- 01:12:54American women who have had cosmetic
- 01:12:55surgery between the ages of 18 and 29
- 01:12:58was only 3% in a similar survey
- 01:13:01conducted by Gallup Korea in
- 01:13:042015 it was found that one in three
- 01:13:06Korean women between the ages of 19 and
- 01:13:092019 have had cosmetic surgery why is
- 01:13:12this the case Korean women are very
- 01:13:14naturally beautiful you Korean men more
- 01:13:16than anyone know this to be true you the
- 01:13:19men didn't ask this of the women just as
- 01:13:21they didn't ask you to take the respons
- 01:13:23possibility of being the sole Bread
- 01:13:24Winners you don't even want them to get
- 01:13:26cosmetic surgery or have to wear makeup
- 01:13:28you think they're lovely just as they
- 01:13:30are and they love to just be themselves
- 01:13:32and thereby be able to also lower their
- 01:13:34standards and reduce the pressure of
- 01:13:35being perfectly beautiful for everyone
- 01:13:38there is so much that the so-called male
- 01:13:40chauvinists and so-called radical
- 01:13:42feminists agree on for example there's
- 01:13:44been a big deal made in Korea about
- 01:13:46illegal cameras being placed in
- 01:13:47bathrooms women are angry that it
- 01:13:49happened and they want to hold the men
- 01:13:50accountable and the men are angry that
- 01:13:52all of them are being painted as as
- 01:13:53perverts that some of them have received
- 01:13:55retaliatory bathroom recordings and are
- 01:13:57thus being subjected to the scorn of
- 01:13:59angry women for the actions of a few
- 01:14:01deviants every reasonable person agrees
- 01:14:04that this behavior is wrong it's wrong
- 01:14:06for women to do to men it's wrong for
- 01:14:08men to do to women and in a reasonable
- 01:14:10Society the solution should be to work
- 01:14:12towards the elimination of all illegal
- 01:14:14bathroom cameras instead of making it
- 01:14:15about gender conflict likewise for our
- 01:14:18gacha drama even the Chinese and
- 01:14:20Japanese gacha communities scratch their
- 01:14:22heads at the behavior of Koreans when
- 01:14:24they get angry at swimsuit skins or
- 01:14:26little pinches appearing in art and they
- 01:14:28like you perhaps ask themselves why is
- 01:14:31this Behavior so
- 01:14:37irrational as we've seen South Korea is
- 01:14:40a society that is both deeply
- 01:14:41hierarchical and socially dysfunctional
- 01:14:44one is taught that they have power over
- 01:14:46those below them in the hierarchy and
- 01:14:48that if Society has disharmony they
- 01:14:50should look beneath them in the
- 01:14:52hierarchy and try to correct the problem
- 01:14:54the captain chastises the first officer
- 01:14:56who chastises the GI on the ground the
- 01:14:58cha balls squeeze the government the
- 01:15:00government squeezes the middle class the
- 01:15:02middle class working dead beats his son
- 01:15:04and the son beats his girlfriend the
- 01:15:06angry girlfriend may even go one layer
- 01:15:08lower and lash out against the LGBT
- 01:15:11community each layer protests the poor
- 01:15:14treatment they receive from the layer
- 01:15:15above them each one seeks reform the
- 01:15:19women seek equal rights from the men the
- 01:15:21men seek better treatment from society
- 01:15:23Society demands a less corrupt
- 01:15:25government and the government wishes to
- 01:15:26reform the cha balls but each layer has
- 01:15:29determined that it is powerless to
- 01:15:31affect the trajectory of the layer above
- 01:15:33it having experienced such firsthand and
- 01:15:36so they do what they know how to do what
- 01:15:38neoc Confucianism has taught them but
- 01:15:41has been drilled into their psyches they
- 01:15:43punch down this is the Crux of the
- 01:15:46Korean gender War this is the sad truth
- 01:15:48around which the entire edifice of this
- 01:15:50conflict is built the cha balls rule Ker
- 01:15:53and Korean livelihood depends on the
- 01:15:55continued existence and empowerment of
- 01:15:57the cha balls they can control
- 01:15:59whomsoever they want even government
- 01:16:02reformers through bribes corruption or
- 01:16:04other manipulation the experience for
- 01:16:07regular Korean people and especially
- 01:16:09young people is increasingly bitter the
- 01:16:12young people having lost hope in
- 01:16:13meaningful reform desperately wish to
- 01:16:16escape hell Josan those who cannot
- 01:16:18physically Escape will seek out other
- 01:16:20ways to mentally Escape they'll get
- 01:16:22super into movies or anime or books
- 01:16:25they'll dedicate their lives to a new
- 01:16:26religious movement or they'll obsess
- 01:16:28over their favorite pop stars bread and
- 01:16:31circuses or maybe just maybe if they're
- 01:16:34young men they'll Escape by playing
- 01:16:36gotra games games where the women are
- 01:16:38beautiful and fond over them where they
- 01:16:40can be powerful Heroes and make a
- 01:16:42meaningful difference in a cruel
- 01:16:43unfathomably hostile World they can
- 01:16:46receive a glimpse a taste of what
- 01:16:49Society promises them but what they
- 01:16:51never seem to receive I'd even and argue
- 01:16:53that this is partially why Korean games
- 01:16:55are so grindy in a society where it
- 01:16:57seems impossible to find self-worth
- 01:17:00where young men are spent like fuel for
- 01:17:02the cha ball furnace it feels nice to
- 01:17:04grind for something that takes effort
- 01:17:06and yields a reward even if that reward
- 01:17:08is small and the effort is substantial
- 01:17:12when that little bubble of escapism that
- 01:17:14little mental Haven is disrupted even if
- 01:17:16that disruption isn't real even if that
- 01:17:19disruption is just the outside world
- 01:17:21projecting a shadow onto the proverbial
- 01:17:23cave wall the response is very severe
- 01:17:26it's not necessarily about women's
- 01:17:27rights or skins or pinches but about
- 01:17:30reasserting control over the very
- 01:17:32limited things these men actually feel
- 01:17:34they have control over and the more
- 01:17:37control Korean Society seeds to these
- 01:17:39angry men in this gacha gender War the
- 01:17:42more control they crave these young men
- 01:17:45having lived their lives with so little
- 01:17:47control so little agency so little power
- 01:17:51have both now a vent for their
- 01:17:53frustrations and an apparent enemy to
- 01:17:56blame for their suffering this all seems
- 01:17:58like a bit of a stretch Mooney I can
- 01:18:00hear you say aren't you reaching a bit
- 01:18:02isn't it reductive to take all of the
- 01:18:05gender War issues going on and reduce
- 01:18:07the fault to just the insecurities of
- 01:18:09men and the Hopeless state of South
- 01:18:11Korean Society that's not what I'm
- 01:18:14saying the insecurity of men does play a
- 01:18:16major role yes but that insecurity has
- 01:18:19been very purposefully manipulated very
- 01:18:22cynically directed A house divided
- 01:18:24against itself cannot stand a people
- 01:18:27divided against themselves cannot Revolt
- 01:18:30let us finish our discussion of History
- 01:18:33then and complete our understanding of
- 01:18:35the Korean gender War by giving you a
- 01:18:37glimpse into modern Korean
- 01:18:41Politics the president that came after
- 01:18:43Ro muan you will recall was the former
- 01:18:46CEO of Hundai engineering and
- 01:18:48construction which nowadays has been
- 01:18:50absorbed by Hundai Motor Group the core
- 01:18:52of the many spin-off companies that
- 01:18:54together compose the complex web which
- 01:18:56constitutes the Hyundai chall lie Yong
- 01:18:58Bach was no political newcomer he had
- 01:19:01served as the mayor of soul in 2002 and
- 01:19:03given Ro mun's unpopularity at the time
- 01:19:07and the ongoing investigations into eled
- 01:19:09corruption Lee mybach was able to take
- 01:19:12the presidency in a landslide his
- 01:19:15platform was simple he promised to
- 01:19:17reform and reinvigorate the economy to
- 01:19:19strengthen relations with the United
- 01:19:20States and to deal with North Korea
- 01:19:23almost immediately after taking power
- 01:19:25though Lee proceeded to negotiate a
- 01:19:27controversial free trade agreement with
- 01:19:29the United States and pushed for
- 01:19:30privatization of public companies like
- 01:19:33his predecessors he conceded ground to
- 01:19:35the cha balls and to the United States
- 01:19:37and built his power off of economic
- 01:19:40legitimacy but Lee was no reformer at
- 01:19:42heart he was of the cha balls and by the
- 01:19:44cha balls and for the cha balls he was
- 01:19:46their man in the chair now look I know
- 01:19:49I've simplified Korean politics to an
- 01:19:50extraordinary extent these leaders are
- 01:19:52more than just walking corruption
- 01:19:54scandals there's a ton of political
- 01:19:55Nuance that I'm not touching upon
- 01:19:57because they're outside of the scope of
- 01:19:58this video but as you will see
- 01:20:00corruption runs very deep in the South
- 01:20:02Korean government and continues to do so
- 01:20:04to this very day these presidency came
- 01:20:06and went and though allegations of
- 01:20:08corruption emerged and they never went
- 01:20:09anywhere it wasn't until 2018 in the
- 01:20:12wake of another corruption Scandal which
- 01:20:14we'll soon get to that Lee yach was
- 01:20:16investigated and eventually arrested and
- 01:20:18sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on
- 01:20:21charges of corruption Ro reported at the
- 01:20:23time that the soul Central District
- 01:20:25Court found Lee guilty of embezzlement
- 01:20:26of about 24.6 billion Korean wan about
- 01:20:302177 million from a private auto parts
- 01:20:33maker headed by his brother and he also
- 01:20:35accepted bribes from Korea's largest CH
- 01:20:38ball Samsung and from other Capital
- 01:20:40interests as well but Lee's corruption
- 01:20:43pales in comparison to that of his
- 01:20:44successor the first female president of
- 01:20:46South Korea and the first female Head of
- 01:20:48State in East Asia Park gon South Korea
- 01:20:52has woken up to its first female
- 01:20:54president elect and some people here on
- 01:20:57the streets of Soul think that she may
- 01:20:58be able to do a lot to try and help the
- 01:21:01lives of women now park was already a
- 01:21:04well-known politician in South Korea
- 01:21:05prior to her becoming president she was
- 01:21:08defeated by leemon Bach the former
- 01:21:10president in their party's last
- 01:21:11primaries and so her name was already
- 01:21:13very well established amongst the voting
- 01:21:14public and particularly in the
- 01:21:16conservative GMP party if you don't
- 01:21:18recognize the name Park gon if you don't
- 01:21:20know what happens next then prepare your
- 01:21:23the truth is sometimes kookier than any
- 01:21:25fiction can be Park gon is the eldest
- 01:21:28daughter of Park Chong he the dictator
- 01:21:31the one who most masterfully wielded the
- 01:21:34cha balls and park chongi was once
- 01:21:36friends with one Choy T Min the leader
- 01:21:39of a new religious movement called Yong
- 01:21:40SEO the Church of the spirit world and
- 01:21:43an alleged mraa or future Buddha Choy T
- 01:21:48Min in part through his friendship with
- 01:21:49Park Chun HEI amassed an enormous amount
- 01:21:51of wealth and power in South Korea Park
- 01:21:54gon's mother the thenen wife of Park
- 01:21:56Changi yok Yong Su was assassinated on
- 01:21:59August 15th 1974 after a failed attempt
- 01:22:02at assassinating Park Chong he went arai
- 01:22:06as Park gon grieved the loss of her
- 01:22:09mother she was allegedly approached by
- 01:22:11Choy T Min who claimed that he had seen
- 01:22:14her mother in a dream an event which
- 01:22:16marked the start of a long friendly
- 01:22:18relationship between Park and choy choy
- 01:22:21T Min had many children one of whom was
- 01:22:24Choy Sunil a prominent and Powerful
- 01:22:27businesswoman who served as Park gon's
- 01:22:29right-hand woman and joy Sunil had a
- 01:22:32daughter named Chong yur Who Loved
- 01:22:34horses she was a gold medalist at the
- 01:22:362014 Asian Games in Rage in 2015 Chong
- 01:22:40was admitted to AWA Women's University a
- 01:22:42highly prestigious School the Korea
- 01:22:45Herald reported that the chief of
- 01:22:46admissions at the University ordered
- 01:22:47interviewers to and I quote select a
- 01:22:50person who brought an Asian games gold
- 01:22:53medal none of the other candidates were
- 01:22:55permitted to bring a medal but Chung
- 01:22:56brought hers in violation of school
- 01:22:58policy and was selected an audit later
- 01:23:01allegedly discovered that the
- 01:23:02interviewers purposefully gave other
- 01:23:04students lower scores to help Chong with
- 01:23:07her acceptance it wasn't enough just to
- 01:23:10graft Chong into the school they
- 01:23:12torpedoed the futures of regular young
- 01:23:14Koreans who had otherwise done
- 01:23:16everything right during her time at
- 01:23:18University Chong was marked as present
- 01:23:20for only eight classes over three
- 01:23:21regular semesters she never did her
- 01:23:23homework she didn't take any exams or
- 01:23:25turn in assignments and yet she
- 01:23:27reportedly received Stellar grades in
- 01:23:30one instance one of Chung's professors
- 01:23:32was found to have done an important
- 01:23:34project for her submitting his or her
- 01:23:36work as Chung's own students at this
- 01:23:39highly prestigious extremely exclusive
- 01:23:41school being amongst Korea's best and
- 01:23:43brightest quickly noticed the
- 01:23:44preferential treatment that Chung was
- 01:23:46receiving and they staged protests
- 01:23:49pursuant then to all of this negative
- 01:23:51attention the Korean cable TV network
- 01:23:53jtbc opened investigations into both
- 01:23:56Chun and her mother Troy Sunil by sheer
- 01:23:59luck jtbc obtained a discarded tablet
- 01:24:03once owned by Troy Sun sill and on this
- 01:24:06tablet jtbc discovered drafts of 44
- 01:24:10different speeches and other statements
- 01:24:12that President Park had made Troy
- 01:24:15received many of these speeches days or
- 01:24:17even hours prior to their delivery and
- 01:24:19certain passages in those speeches were
- 01:24:22marked in red this powerful
- 01:24:24businesswoman this daughter of a cult
- 01:24:26leader had access to extremely
- 01:24:28privileged information and was editing
- 01:24:30the speeches and directing the policy of
- 01:24:32the president this discovery struck
- 01:24:35South Korea like a lightning bolt and
- 01:24:37mass protests erupted followed by
- 01:24:38investigations of both the president and
- 01:24:40her
- 01:24:41[Applause]
- 01:24:51staff
- 01:24:54at the end of those investigations a
- 01:24:56wide web of corruption was uncovered a
- 01:24:58web so vast that we don't even have time
- 01:25:00to cover each instance of corruption in
- 01:25:02this video instead we'll fast forward to
- 01:25:04the end Park was successfully impeached
- 01:25:07and both Troy and park were brought
- 01:25:08before the so Central District Court
- 01:25:10many of Park's Associates ranging from
- 01:25:12her personal aids to high-profile
- 01:25:13government officials to business tycoons
- 01:25:15were jailed for corruption most notably
- 01:25:17Shin dong bin the chairman of the fifth
- 01:25:20largest cha ball in Korea LTE was
- 01:25:22sentenced to 2 and A2 years in prison
- 01:25:25for offering a bribe of $6.5 million to
- 01:25:28Choy and park and Lee J young the then
- 01:25:31Vice chairman now executive chairman of
- 01:25:33the largest chall Samsung was convicted
- 01:25:35of bribery embezzlement perjury and
- 01:25:38other charges Le J young had made
- 01:25:40payments of over $36 million to
- 01:25:42foundations owned by Troy had given a
- 01:25:45prize horse in several million dollar to
- 01:25:47choy's daughter as well he did this in
- 01:25:49order to secure government support for a
- 01:25:51major restructuring of Samsung which
- 01:25:53just so happened to allow Lee to become
- 01:25:55the head of Samsung later down the road
- 01:25:58Park herself was convicted of abusing
- 01:25:59her power to extort money from companies
- 01:26:01of unlawfully pressuring Hyundai to sign
- 01:26:03a deal with a company owned by Choy and
- 01:26:05forcing them to run ads for her company
- 01:26:07of soliciting that bribe for $6.5
- 01:26:09Million by LTE of forcing a telecom
- 01:26:12company to hire a close friend of choice
- 01:26:14of leaking 47 confidential presidential
- 01:26:16documents to Troy of various bribes
- 01:26:18surrounding Samsung of receiving bribes
- 01:26:21from the national intell Ence service
- 01:26:23the Korean equivalent of the CIA and
- 01:26:25more Troy was sentenced to 20 years in
- 01:26:28prison and a fine equivalent to 16.6
- 01:26:31million US Park was sentenced to 24
- 01:26:34years in prison and a $16.6 million fine
- 01:26:38as well seems like a stunning victory
- 01:26:40for the Korean people right the corrupt
- 01:26:43president has been removed the influence
- 01:26:45of the cha balls has been gouged out of
- 01:26:46the government and now things will be
- 01:26:48better won't they the people are back at
- 01:26:50the top of the hierarchy now aren't they
- 01:26:53well no I'm afraid not the next
- 01:26:57president was Moon Jay in he came from
- 01:26:59the opposing political party and was not
- 01:27:01a conservative but a progressive he ran
- 01:27:03on a platform of reforming the cha balls
- 01:27:05he raised the minimum wage by more than
- 01:27:0716% he lowered the so-called maximum
- 01:27:09work week from 68 hours to 52 hours
- 01:27:13which I will note for the record doesn't
- 01:27:14actually mean one only works for 52
- 01:27:16hours a week he was also in power when
- 01:27:18covid-19 struck Korea and his leadership
- 01:27:21is credited with substantially reducing
- 01:27:23the impact of the virus on Korea but
- 01:27:26despite his attempts at economic reform
- 01:27:28the cha balls were far too powerful
- 01:27:30although Moon himself managed to avoid
- 01:27:32allegations of corruption members of his
- 01:27:34government including his direct
- 01:27:36appointees were not so fortunate
- 01:27:38consider Cho cook Moon's appointed
- 01:27:40Minister of Justice who allegedly
- 01:27:42conducted illicit business activities
- 01:27:44and was sentenced to two years in prison
- 01:27:46for falsifying documents showing his son
- 01:27:49had completed a prestigious internship
- 01:27:51that he never actually did and for
- 01:27:52forging his daughter's academic
- 01:27:54credentials you tell me how is the
- 01:27:57average Korean supposed to compete with
- 01:27:59behavior like this mun jayen became
- 01:28:02president on May 10th 2017 and served
- 01:28:04until May 9th
- 01:28:062022 on February 13th 2018 Shin dong bin
- 01:28:10the head of Lte was sentenced to 30
- 01:28:13months in prison pursuant to the bribe
- 01:28:15issued to Choy soon sill and exchange
- 01:28:17for licenses which would allow LTE to
- 01:28:19operate duty free stores on October 5th
- 01:28:222018 a South Korean appeals court agreed
- 01:28:24to suspend his sentence to time already
- 01:28:26served thus setting him free he remains
- 01:28:29the CEO of Lte to this very day Li Jon
- 01:28:33head of Samsung was convicted on August
- 01:28:3525th 2017 and sentenced to 5 years in
- 01:28:38prison he was let on on parole by the
- 01:28:40soul high court pursuant to a suspended
- 01:28:42sentence after just 11 months the
- 01:28:45Supreme Court reviewed the case and
- 01:28:46remanded it to the high court in 2019
- 01:28:49and Lee was sent back to jail briefly
- 01:28:51following a retrial yet he would be
- 01:28:53released again on parole shortly
- 01:28:55thereafter on August 12th 2022 Lee Jon
- 01:28:59was pardoned by current Korean president
- 01:29:01Yun suak Yol Lee maintained control of
- 01:29:04Samsung throughout his brief time in and
- 01:29:06out of prison PBS reports that Business
- 01:29:08Leaders and politicians had called for
- 01:29:10Lee's pardon Justice Minister Han dong
- 01:29:13hun stated at the time that the pardons
- 01:29:15were and I quote aimed at overcoming the
- 01:29:17economic crisis through encouraging
- 01:29:20business activity it was just like what
- 01:29:22happened to the industrialists under
- 01:29:24Park chunhe imprisoned fined and
- 01:29:27released in exchange for their
- 01:29:29cooperation wield the scepter gain
- 01:29:32legitimacy empower the cha balls feed
- 01:29:35the beast on December 23rd 2021
- 01:29:38president mjin granted a special pardon
- 01:29:40to former president parona this is what
- 01:29:43he said concerning the pardon we should
- 01:29:45move into a new era by getting over the
- 01:29:48Pains of the past It's Time To Boldly
- 01:29:50pull together all our strengths for the
- 01:29:52future rather than fighting against each
- 01:29:54other while being preoccupied with the
- 01:29:57past and believe it or not even former
- 01:29:59president Lee mybach received a pardon
- 01:30:01remember him the president who was the
- 01:30:03former CEO of Hyundai and who took
- 01:30:05bribes from Samsung amongst other crimes
- 01:30:07of corruption he too was pardoned one
- 01:30:10year later on December 27th 2022 by
- 01:30:13current president Yun suak Yol after all
- 01:30:17the smoke and mirrors after all the Pomp
- 01:30:19and Circumstance nothing changes
- 01:30:22the hierarchy reasserts itself into the
- 01:30:24proper order and the tensions grow and
- 01:30:27this brings us to the very end of our
- 01:30:29history lesson with the aforementioned
- 01:30:30current president Yun sakol a very
- 01:30:33staunch conservative who has promised
- 01:30:35exactly the same thing that each of his
- 01:30:36predecessors has he promised to fight
- 01:30:39inequality and unemployment and fight
- 01:30:41corruption but he has also promised
- 01:30:44economic deregulation and a Hardline
- 01:30:46stance against
- 01:30:49feminism we won't get into the political
- 01:30:51convers ation surrounding yunak Yol this
- 01:30:54video at the end of the day is not about
- 01:30:55politics heck it's not really even about
- 01:30:57gacha games it's about the application
- 01:30:59of history in order to understand why
- 01:31:01the Korean gender war is so terrible and
- 01:31:03so pervasive Korea's neoc Confucian
- 01:31:06hierarchy has been hijacked by CH balls
- 01:31:08everyone in South Korea knows that the
- 01:31:10CH balls are an enormous problem in need
- 01:31:12of Reform but the issue is too deeply
- 01:31:15intrenched to reform in any obvious way
- 01:31:18the nation's desperate and genuinely
- 01:31:20forsaken young men seek to resolve the
- 01:31:22insecurities in their lives by punching
- 01:31:24down and the women well they suffer the
- 01:31:26weight and indignity of every layer
- 01:31:28above them including that of the young
- 01:31:30men the chaal captured government with
- 01:31:32its CEO princesses being given horses
- 01:31:35and University admission its endless
- 01:31:37corruption scandals and its corporate
- 01:31:38power Brokers has figured out too that
- 01:31:41deflecting the anger of society towards
- 01:31:43the lower levels of the hierarchy
- 01:31:45directing the anger of these young men
- 01:31:46towards young women is not only the easy
- 01:31:49way out but the culturally organic
- 01:31:52choice and all the while the problems
- 01:31:54don't actually get fixed the status quo
- 01:31:57reasserts itself over and over and the
- 01:32:00tensions build the corrupt officials are
- 01:32:03pardoned the corrupt businessmen are let
- 01:32:05go with more power than they had before
- 01:32:07the president is trying to raise the
- 01:32:09maximum working hours again the society
- 01:32:14stagnates with our long history lesson
- 01:32:17finally out of the way it is time to
- 01:32:20return to got drum
- 01:32:22one final
- 01:32:26time as Korean gacha Dev after Korean
- 01:32:28gacha Dev conceded to the men they
- 01:32:30became emboldened in their efforts
- 01:32:33virtually every single Korean gacha
- 01:32:35developer had caved art was changed and
- 01:32:37Mass to remove finger pinches apologies
- 01:32:39were issued and the women who worked on
- 01:32:41these games were cowed into silence
- 01:32:43fired or otherwise reprimanded but in
- 01:32:46the midst of these victories there was
- 01:32:48one feminist controversy that did not
- 01:32:50pan out how the Korean men EXP expected
- 01:32:52for though Korean companies mired in the
- 01:32:54Korean gender War were quick to bend the
- 01:32:56knee not every gacha game that is
- 01:32:59popular in Korea happens to be made by a
- 01:33:01Korean Dev on November 28th 2023 the
- 01:33:04YouTube channel behind none other than
- 01:33:06genshin impact released a
- 01:33:08behindthescenes look at the creation of
- 01:33:11a character named finina finina is an
- 01:33:13exceptionally popular character in genin
- 01:33:16but especially so in Korea where she won
- 01:33:18first place in a popularity vote amongst
- 01:33:21the rean genin Community there was
- 01:33:23nothing feminist to discover in this
- 01:33:25video but as we've already stated if one
- 01:33:27hunts for witches they will inevitably
- 01:33:29find them and the Korean men discovered
- 01:33:32that farina's character designer was a
- 01:33:33Korean artist living in Shanghai who
- 01:33:36goes by the Alias yomi yomi like velore
- 01:33:40like teso like Kim Jan had made a series
- 01:33:43of ostensibly feminist tweets on Twitter
- 01:33:45in the distant past yomi however was
- 01:33:48much more direct with her statements she
- 01:33:50jokes about how it doesn't disturb her
- 01:33:52when women chewed their food loudly but
- 01:33:53that she'd actually kill guys who did so
- 01:33:57and in another tweet she jokes that they
- 01:33:59meaning men should all be purged in
- 01:34:02response to having just been stalked by
- 01:34:04a guy on the street these tweets were
- 01:34:06enough though and the Angry Men then
- 01:34:08went through all of the art that yomi
- 01:34:09had drawn and discovered that she had
- 01:34:11worked not only on the art and design
- 01:34:13for finina but that she had also worked
- 01:34:15as an illustrator for the korean-made
- 01:34:16game Ark Knights her art was immediately
- 01:34:19removed from Ark Knights and an apology
- 01:34:21was issued but the anger persisted and
- 01:34:24the men continued to Hound Ark Knights
- 01:34:26until further capitulations were made
- 01:34:28just a week prior to the release of this
- 01:34:30video Ark Knight's developer yoar
- 01:34:32deleted a different artist's work from
- 01:34:34their game and YouTube channel after the
- 01:34:36illustrator of said artwork was also
- 01:34:38revealed to be a feminist what was her
- 01:34:41radical feminist crime you may ask well
- 01:34:43she retweeted the 2018 Google Doodle
- 01:34:46image for international women's day back
- 01:34:49in well 2018
- 01:34:52that's it that's the basis of the
- 01:34:54radical feminism claim Ark Knights
- 01:34:56responded after those allegations came
- 01:34:58to life deleting the offending artists
- 01:35:00work within allegedly only half an hour
- 01:35:02after the feminism claims were made
- 01:35:04public but let's go back to yomi for a
- 01:35:07second and genshin impact because
- 01:35:08something very curious happened when the
- 01:35:10Korean men turned their anger towards
- 01:35:12genshin genshin impact you see is not
- 01:35:14published by a Korean company it's
- 01:35:17published by mihoyo which is based in
- 01:35:19Shanghai China and Yom is not in Korea
- 01:35:23she is also physically located in
- 01:35:25Shanghai the Korean men vented their
- 01:35:27outrage at mihoyo they threatened to
- 01:35:29boycott the game and levied accusation
- 01:35:31after accusation on Twitter and Beyond
- 01:35:33they attempted to rile up the Chinese
- 01:35:35gacha playing male Community whom they
- 01:35:36believed would be sympathetic to their
- 01:35:38cause they review bombed genin on the
- 01:35:40Google store they allegedly hired
- 01:35:42protest trucks to drive around soul with
- 01:35:44messages critical of mihoyo they
- 01:35:46attempted to pressure Korean politicians
- 01:35:48into doing something they allegedly
- 01:35:49reported yomi to Chinese authori ities
- 01:35:51for seditious activity they even went so
- 01:35:53far as to reveal her personal
- 01:35:55information and threaten her and do you
- 01:35:58know what mihoyo did in response to
- 01:35:59these threats to this
- 01:36:02anger nothing they just ignored the
- 01:36:05Korean men entirely yomi's art is still
- 01:36:08in GHIN the Chinese gacha playing men a
- 01:36:11community that is itself not
- 01:36:12particularly feminist received the
- 01:36:15Korean men's claims with horrified
- 01:36:17bemusement China is in some feminist
- 01:36:19Paradise quite quite far far from it but
- 01:36:22even for a Confucian Society with
- 01:36:24similar traditional views surrounding
- 01:36:26women the extreme behavior of the Korean
- 01:36:28men seemed like nonsense the context is
- 01:36:31lost on them and the outrage therefore
- 01:36:34seems Preposterous the Korean men had
- 01:36:36one last idea though one final protest
- 01:36:39to end all protests a display of anger
- 01:36:42and power meant to frighten mihoyo and
- 01:36:44bring them to heal in late December the
- 01:36:46Korean gacha Community raised a total of
- 01:36:4916 million Korean wan around
- 01:36:52$12,200 to fly a protest blimp around
- 01:36:55mihoyo's HQ in South Korea this was the
- 01:36:59first protest of its kind designed to
- 01:37:02strike fear into the hearts of mihoyo's
- 01:37:04decision makers John Lopez at the tech
- 01:37:06times reports that the protesters had
- 01:37:09already staged truck protests for 5 days
- 01:37:12which received no notice and that the
- 01:37:14blimp was intended to be a message that
- 01:37:16nobody not even hoyo in China could
- 01:37:19ignore on December 21st 2023 the blimp
- 01:37:24went up it sailed victoriously
- 01:37:27triumphantly over tavat Tower and then
- 01:37:31on December 25th
- 01:37:342023 it came down
- 01:37:37$12,200 had been spent the text on the
- 01:37:39balloon was too small to read the only
- 01:37:42thing that could be legibly read from
- 01:37:43the ground was the large Hoover logo the
- 01:37:46protesters had spent
- 01:37:48$12,200 on free advertising or mihoyo
- 01:37:52and rather humorously but in a sad sort
- 01:37:54of way the blimp protest organizer was
- 01:37:57suspected and accused of siphoning some
- 01:37:59of the funds contributed to the blimp
- 01:38:01protest in an act of corruption the
- 01:38:04photo of the blimp floating sadly almost
- 01:38:06pathetically over mihoyo's Korean
- 01:38:08offices became something of a minor meme
- 01:38:10on both Korean and Chinese social media
- 01:38:13and the protests against genin died
- 01:38:16shortly thereafter not with a mighty
- 01:38:18bang but with a sad deep deflating
- 01:38:22whimper the fighting however continues
- 01:38:24to this very day elsewhere in the Korean
- 01:38:27gacha space we discussed the ongoing
- 01:38:29situation with Ark Knights but it's only
- 01:38:31a matter of time before another gacha
- 01:38:32game is brought into the crosshairs I'm
- 01:38:34going to stop my coverage of the Korean
- 01:38:36gacha drama here although I'm sure
- 01:38:38there's much more to discuss I'm certain
- 01:38:41that there will be people in the
- 01:38:42comments of this video armed with Google
- 01:38:43translated walls of text and links to
- 01:38:46various tweets or pictures pointing to
- 01:38:48this thing or that thing that apparently
- 01:38:50provide some context to this or that
- 01:38:52behavior but I encourage you my audience
- 01:38:56to look past these small things here to
- 01:38:58look past the got drama to see the
- 01:39:01forest for the trees as you've surely
- 01:39:04surmised by now this video isn't really
- 01:39:07about reporting on the intricate details
- 01:39:09of G drama not really and as you now
- 01:39:12know this anger these comments this
- 01:39:15fighting it also isn't really about
- 01:39:18gacha games in fact after we filter out
- 01:39:21all of the noise the case can be made
- 01:39:23that the protests of these Korean men
- 01:39:25aren't actually about
- 01:39:27feminism at
- 01:39:31all hey remember limbus company the
- 01:39:34ishmail swimsuit incident it all seems
- 01:39:37so long ago now doesn't it well there is
- 01:39:41a point of irony here a lot of South
- 01:39:43Korean media is quite critical of the
- 01:39:46current state of chal captured South
- 01:39:48Korea but in that subtle Korean way you
- 01:39:51might be familiar with Squid game or
- 01:39:53parasite as illustrative examples squid
- 01:39:56game probably tells the story of this
- 01:39:57video better than I do fun fact the
- 01:40:00actor who played the salesman gong Yu
- 01:40:02stated in 2017 that he is a 79th
- 01:40:05generation descendant of none other than
- 01:40:07confucious himself funny how things come
- 01:40:09full circle like that right film in
- 01:40:12cinema is one thing but you might be
- 01:40:13surprised to hear that the story I've
- 01:40:15told you all today about the desperate
- 01:40:17state of South Korean Society also
- 01:40:20features very in gacha games Korean
- 01:40:23gacha games from counterside to Ark
- 01:40:25Knights and Beyond often feature a
- 01:40:27post-apocalyptic cyber dystopian City
- 01:40:30some inscrutable bureaucracy and a
- 01:40:32struggle to both figure out the truth
- 01:40:33amidst the confusion and save the day
- 01:40:36does blue archive also count as an
- 01:40:38example of this I don't know you let me
- 01:40:40know in fact at least one gotra game has
- 01:40:43a plot that touches directly on the
- 01:40:45topic of feminism that game being the
- 01:40:48incredibly orary and puran game Nik
- 01:40:51goddess of Victory Moon Channel viewer
- 01:40:54at Valkyrie Tiara left this insightful
- 01:40:56post on part one of this video on the
- 01:40:58surface the game is 100% fan service but
- 01:41:01there's a deeply emotional story Nik are
- 01:41:04cyborgs human Minds contained in
- 01:41:07mechanical bodies designed specifically
- 01:41:09to fight an invading force of alien
- 01:41:11robots a quirk of the technology though
- 01:41:13is that only women can be turned into
- 01:41:15Nik and all Nik have an outwardly
- 01:41:17feminine appearance Tiara continues by
- 01:41:19stating that one of the main conceits of
- 01:41:21the game is that Nik are generally
- 01:41:24distrusted and disliked by society and
- 01:41:26they're always human and it is implied
- 01:41:29always male officers treat them like
- 01:41:32property or animals due to the military
- 01:41:34leadership conducting what amounts to
- 01:41:36brainwashing conditioning the Tres to
- 01:41:38treat Nik as disposable machines rather
- 01:41:41than autonomous people your player
- 01:41:44characters superpower in Nik their
- 01:41:46unique characteristic the aspect that
- 01:41:48makes them a hero is is that they do not
- 01:41:51treat Nik like objects but as comrades
- 01:41:55equals and friends and thus the
- 01:41:57protagonist is able to command loyalty
- 01:41:59and respect from even the most powerful
- 01:42:01and most stubborn of the nik nik is at
- 01:42:05least from what I've seen the most
- 01:42:06unabashedly runchy major gacha game and
- 01:42:10yet you know what fandom hasn't had a
- 01:42:12feminist Witch Hunt that I could find
- 01:42:14the Nik fandom the Nik team's most
- 01:42:16recent controversy was designing a
- 01:42:18character that resembled another artists
- 01:42:19work too close
- 01:42:21as hideio Kima intended prance and
- 01:42:24feminism can coexist you can have your
- 01:42:27cake and eat it too there is of course
- 01:42:31another gacha game that more than any of
- 01:42:34the others speaks directly about the
- 01:42:36problems in South Korean Society about
- 01:42:39corporate culture and the
- 01:42:40hypercompetitive nature of life and the
- 01:42:42strict social hierarchies and the
- 01:42:43impossibly Labyrinth bureaucracy
- 01:42:45reinforcing the tragic status quo and
- 01:42:48that game is Lim
- 01:42:52company if one actually pays attention
- 01:42:55to the plot of limbus company if one
- 01:42:57looks past wuss and husbandos for a
- 01:42:59moment limbus company is also a critique
- 01:43:03I'm going to quote here one Jane John a
- 01:43:05Korean developer who left Korea 15 years
- 01:43:07ago who begged her mother to let her
- 01:43:09leave Korea to go anywhere else she
- 01:43:11summarizes the plot of limbus company
- 01:43:13thusly the games are set in a place
- 01:43:16known as the city in which giant
- 01:43:18corporations have absolute control over
- 01:43:20their territory iies all morals are
- 01:43:22thrown out the window in pursuit of
- 01:43:23profit with people who are blind to the
- 01:43:26disgustingly ugly truths of the world
- 01:43:28desperate to join the corporations and
- 01:43:30Escape abject poverty crime and Horrors
- 01:43:33that lie in the lower cast of society
- 01:43:35perpetuating the cycle of misery Despair
- 01:43:39and hatred the world of limbus company
- 01:43:42is merely an interpretation of South
- 01:43:45Korean reality for the Korean men
- 01:43:48watching this video Angry perhaps for
- 01:43:50frustrated with its content let me ask
- 01:43:53you something if your demands were met
- 01:43:55if Korean women acted exactly how you
- 01:43:57wanted them to would your situation
- 01:44:01improve what are your demands respect
- 01:44:05fewer kimchi women and more Sushi women
- 01:44:08a return to a more polite old-fashioned
- 01:44:11Korean Society let's say you get exactly
- 01:44:14that what now will subservient women get
- 01:44:17you a girlfriend or a wife if the women
- 01:44:20choose to leave instead of marrying you
- 01:44:22will you force them to stay will you
- 01:44:24take their passports away let's say that
- 01:44:26the situation for Korean women regresses
- 01:44:28to the point where arranged marriages
- 01:44:30become typical even then will you have a
- 01:44:33wife will there be enough people left in
- 01:44:36South Korea because let me tell you
- 01:44:38something that you might not know in the
- 01:44:40rest of East Asia amongst the East Asian
- 01:44:43diaspora and even in many Southeast
- 01:44:45Asian communities parents often give
- 01:44:48their daughters the Korean talk mothers
- 01:44:50and fathers in Japan in Taiwan in
- 01:44:53mainland China in Singapore in Vietnam
- 01:44:56and beyond all tell their daughters the
- 01:44:59same thing be careful when you date and
- 01:45:02do not marry Mainland Korean men you
- 01:45:07will be treated like a possession you
- 01:45:08will be abused and kept subservient you
- 01:45:11will be set to labor by his family and
- 01:45:13subject to his expectations and whims
- 01:45:16don't marry Korean men it's not fair to
- 01:45:19apply such a to all Korean men of course
- 01:45:22but this perception this stereotype does
- 01:45:26exist if you have received the talk
- 01:45:29share it in the comments let them see
- 01:45:32something has got to give will the
- 01:45:35forced respect will the domination of
- 01:45:36women raise your wages will it reduce
- 01:45:38your workload will it make your lives
- 01:45:41less competitive less miserable less
- 01:45:44unfair will it prevent you from getting
- 01:45:46conscripted will it prevent the Sons and
- 01:45:49Daughters of chall business businessmen
- 01:45:50from cheating their way into
- 01:45:52universities and into prestigious
- 01:45:53careers there is no question you are
- 01:45:56treated
- 01:45:57unjustly absolutely the situation in
- 01:46:00South Korea for men but especially young
- 01:46:03men is untenable unbearable and unfair
- 01:46:07Life in Korea for a man is hellish but
- 01:46:11it's not the women who are holding you
- 01:46:13down they don't have the power to do
- 01:46:14that and their experiences are just as
- 01:46:17hellacious as yours if not more so the
- 01:46:21real problems in your Society are not
- 01:46:23beneath you they are above you I cannot
- 01:46:26tell you how to resolve those problems
- 01:46:27but I can tell you that acting like
- 01:46:29crabs in a bucket pulling each other
- 01:46:31down prevents anyone from escaping hell
- 01:46:34but here's the thing although the
- 01:46:35situation seems hopeless although you
- 01:46:37may feel powerless and without agency
- 01:46:40the truth of the matter is this you
- 01:46:42angry young men and angry young women
- 01:46:44have forced powerful companies to
- 01:46:46capitulate to issue apologies and to
- 01:46:48make concessions not unlike your gacha
- 01:46:50Heroes you have more power than you
- 01:46:52think to write society's wrongs as such
- 01:46:56the top of the hierarchy benefits from
- 01:46:57keeping you apart and fighting Confucian
- 01:47:01Society isn't evil but it has its
- 01:47:03exploits if you become aware of them it
- 01:47:05can fight against the utilization of
- 01:47:07these exploits by the powerful you
- 01:47:09Korean men and Korean women can build a
- 01:47:11better society and a brighter future for
- 01:47:14everyone the brighter future that the
- 01:47:17men and women of the land of the morning
- 01:47:19Cal so rightfully
