- 00:00:00love me love me say that you love me
- 00:00:04fool me fool me go on and fool
- 00:00:13me oh wow F congratulations you got a
- 00:00:16broken iMac you replace the motherboard
- 00:00:17with one of those Chinese boards that
- 00:00:19convert the display to an HDMI One
- 00:00:22display technology in the iMac G5 is so
- 00:00:23old my grandma has more resolution in it
- 00:00:25the backlight sucks this video is
- 00:00:27terrible is this what you try to pass as
- 00:00:29something original on YouTube now so I
- 00:00:32really got into it when in the intro I
- 00:00:34said this has no apple Parts in it I was
- 00:00:37serious and it really has a resolution
- 00:00:39of 2560 x600 a refresh rate of 240 HZ
- 00:00:43and it's not just a display because that
- 00:00:46would be boring this is a thing that I
- 00:00:49built for a very specific use case but
- 00:00:51I'll tell you about that later and uh
- 00:00:54I'd rather show you and tell you what it
- 00:00:56is because it's kind of difficult to
- 00:00:57explain so you connect it to whatever
- 00:00:59you want using one USBC cable that was
- 00:01:02my MacBook Pro there but let's use my
- 00:01:04steam deck here for a change which is
- 00:01:06actually the intended thing that I build
- 00:01:08this for so as you can see now my steam
- 00:01:10duck through this one single cable there
- 00:01:12is no trickery here it is outputting
- 00:01:15video to this display here and also
- 00:01:17getting power but also as you can see it
- 00:01:20is getting access to this mouse and
- 00:01:23keyboard they do work and that's because
- 00:01:25the ports on the back of the iMac here
- 00:01:26do actually work and they connect
- 00:01:28through that single USB cable not just
- 00:01:31that but the webcam here too is working
- 00:01:33I'm not turning it on now because it has
- 00:01:35a super wide fov and I don't want to
- 00:01:37show you my massive room but I have some
- 00:01:39beeroll here so you get access to all of
- 00:01:42that you get access to speakers and you
- 00:01:44also get access to something very
- 00:01:45special so we have Office for Mac 2011
- 00:01:48here which doesn't work on the steam
- 00:01:50deck unless I do some vm3 which I'm not
- 00:01:52doing today but yeah if I put it here
- 00:01:55there is a working DVD drive that's also
- 00:01:58connected through that single USBC you
- 00:02:00get access to all you need to turn your
- 00:02:02steam deck or laptop into a small party
- 00:02:05machine I have my steam controller
- 00:02:07dongle thing here let me actually plug
- 00:02:09it in the back let me actually uh put my
- 00:02:11steam duck back into gaming mode very
- 00:02:14often when I hang out with my friends we
- 00:02:16want to play some party games or
- 00:02:18something like Mario Kart which I never
- 00:02:21ever would emulate on my steam deck I
- 00:02:23would never do that and we pretty often
- 00:02:25would like to have a fast way to get a
- 00:02:27bigger screen to actually see what
- 00:02:29you're doing and something that can
- 00:02:30instantly let us connect controllers to
- 00:02:33my steam deck and just play stuff this
- 00:02:36is precisely that it's basically the
- 00:02:38best hidden sleeper Party Machine that I
- 00:02:41could ever build I really viy with the
- 00:02:43aesthetic of the inck G5 but right now
- 00:02:46they are very useless machines so I
- 00:02:48wanted to build like a sort of scene
- 00:02:51prop that also is functionally something
- 00:02:54that I can use when I am doing stuff so
- 00:02:56I can actually display stuff on here
- 00:02:58very easily and and I haven't told you
- 00:03:00the best part so let me actually unplug
- 00:03:02this right now this was pluged to the
- 00:03:05wall using a charger but I am European
- 00:03:08as you can clearly tell from my uh hair
- 00:03:10and my accent which means that of course
- 00:03:12I designed this to be fully USBC
- 00:03:14compliant this is a fully portable USBC
- 00:03:18monitor I can literally just plug my
- 00:03:20power bank into it plug my steam deck
- 00:03:23and now we should get access to all of
- 00:03:26the goodies that have jam packed inside
- 00:03:28here hopefully yeah un likee my pight
- 00:03:30webcam video I actually designed and
- 00:03:33built this from scratch I didn't follow
- 00:03:35any instructions everything that you see
- 00:03:37here is something that I had to figure
- 00:03:38out myself and uh it is a bit juny but
- 00:03:42let me tell you how I built this because
- 00:03:44uh it's an interesting story since I was
- 00:03:46a kid I've seen a lot of people take old
- 00:03:48iMac like this one and especially the
- 00:03:50iMac G4 which makes sense because that's
- 00:03:53probably the best looking computer of
- 00:03:54all time and retrofitting them with
- 00:03:57newer Parts you see people putting M1
- 00:04:00Mac M inside of them or Intel KN and
- 00:04:02hacking toshing them but the design of
- 00:04:04this iMac is Iconic even after 20 years
- 00:04:07this panel is not the iMac G5 and its
- 00:04:09successor the white Intel iMac came in
- 00:04:11various different sizes I think the 17
- 00:04:13in one is the best candidate for modding
- 00:04:16because 17 in is small enough to let me
- 00:04:18retrofit a new laptop panel I can go to
- 00:04:21a website like panel.com and find a
- 00:04:23panel that is exactly the same size and
- 00:04:25aspect ratio as the original one but
- 00:04:27with double the resolution double the
- 00:04:29refresh rate rate or even four times the
- 00:04:30refresh rate newer backlight technology
- 00:04:32and way way thinner of a body and that's
- 00:04:35exactly what I did I bought this Boe
- 00:04:37display for about 80 you might have seen
- 00:04:39it in my last video I was using it there
- 00:04:41and after buying a display board
- 00:04:43actually three of them I had to figure
- 00:04:44out which one was the best one I can
- 00:04:46adapt its EMB bettered display port
- 00:04:47connector which is meant for laptops to
- 00:04:50basically anything and in this case I
- 00:04:51went for USBC display port out after
- 00:04:54doing some digging I managed to get the
- 00:04:56perfect specimen the perfect guinea pig
- 00:04:59to work on a 17 in iMac G5 that was sold
- 00:05:02for parts and buy for parts I mean
- 00:05:05everything was removed from it except
- 00:05:07for the housing like the physical case
- 00:05:09and the panel this panel right here that
- 00:05:12was perfect for me because if I screw
- 00:05:15something up I wouldn't end up killing a
- 00:05:18working iMac so I I wouldn't feel that
- 00:05:20guilty about it and also for €1 I
- 00:05:23couldn't really go wrong and so I order
- 00:05:25it I wait a bit I get it and I
- 00:05:28immediately start checking what I got
- 00:05:31because it would have been weird for
- 00:05:33someone to try and scam me when I was
- 00:05:34buying a broken iMac but you never no
- 00:05:37these days I got the package and
- 00:05:39everything was exactly what I ordered
- 00:05:41which is great except for the fact that
- 00:05:43after I started opening it up there are
- 00:05:45like some screws here that you need to
- 00:05:47remove and then you just take the Basel
- 00:05:48out for years I have been under the
- 00:05:51impression that IM g5s have their
- 00:05:53display their panel mounted on the Basel
- 00:05:56and if you go to iix it you can actually
- 00:05:59confirm that that I wasn't just having a
- 00:06:01pipe dream or a harh pipe dream in case
- 00:06:03you're R Cuomo that's actually correct
- 00:06:05so why was my iMac having its display
- 00:06:08mounted on the body which was a problem
- 00:06:11for me because I wanted to just yank
- 00:06:14that out and mount my own display and
- 00:06:16mounting it on the Basel is just easier
- 00:06:17if you are beginner like me well this is
- 00:06:20not a normal iMac G5 it's an iMac G5
- 00:06:23eyesight and even though they look
- 00:06:25completely identical on the outside they
- 00:06:27are two completely different machines on
- 00:06:29the inside and so I was kind of screwed
- 00:06:33I now had to figure out a way to make
- 00:06:35that work the most logical solution here
- 00:06:38probably would have been designing an
- 00:06:40adapter bracket that made my laptop
- 00:06:42panel thicker and added some screw
- 00:06:44mounts and I didn't do that I didn't do
- 00:06:46that and I decided to just do this the
- 00:06:48oldfashioned way and by that I mean
- 00:06:51copying what the normal iMac G5 does
- 00:06:54mounting the display on the bathroom the
- 00:06:57first thing that I did was just see if
- 00:06:59my actual panel was the right size and I
- 00:07:03I tested that by literally taping it on
- 00:07:06the Basel and it worked okay nothing CAU
- 00:07:09on fire the panel is precisely the same
- 00:07:11size as this original piece of trash and
- 00:07:14so for a brief second there I could
- 00:07:17enjoy the pleasure of taking a look at
- 00:07:20what I could eventually build and now it
- 00:07:22was time to build it so let me show you
- 00:07:25what my solution to mount the panel here
- 00:07:28is I I got to take my screwdriver one
- 00:07:30second this is the fanciest screwdriver
- 00:07:33set that I've ever owned let's open this
- 00:07:36thing up and show you uh everything that
- 00:07:38I did editor
- 00:07:40F bring me a dream give me the best b
- 00:07:44roll that I've ever seen because this
- 00:07:46camera angle is kind of weird and I
- 00:07:49don't even know what I am doing so after
- 00:07:52you remove those screws there you just
- 00:07:54have to uh basically take out this Basel
- 00:07:57here there are two metal clamps here on
- 00:07:59the top that I removed you shouldn't
- 00:08:01have remove them but I removed them this
- 00:08:03is not coming out yeah I forgot a screw
- 00:08:06this one of the weird ones too because
- 00:08:08Apple really wants to make my life
- 00:08:11difficult for no reason and I also got
- 00:08:14the wrong bit now there are so many bits
- 00:08:17here looks like a Nintendo 64 commercial
- 00:08:20all right so you go here you go here let
- 00:08:24me show you what I cooked there are
- 00:08:25several tables here that are sandwich
- 00:08:28between the screen and everything else
- 00:08:31and I got to disconnect them so my
- 00:08:33solution for mounting the panel on the
- 00:08:36Basel has been a combination of a lot of
- 00:08:39stuff first and foremost a lot of
- 00:08:40electrical tape but I didn't want this
- 00:08:43to be like the thing keeping everything
- 00:08:45together because you should never rely
- 00:08:47on tape too much because if it's too hot
- 00:08:49or too cold like Cy Perry uh it loses
- 00:08:52its stickiness so yeah never use that
- 00:08:54for like permanent mounting here I
- 00:08:57basically use it for like lining
- 00:08:59everything up but the real sauce here
- 00:09:01the thing keeping everything together is
- 00:09:03this plastic back plate that by using
- 00:09:06some Magnetic Tape here and some here
- 00:09:10basically holds everything in place
- 00:09:11using magnets this Magnetic Tape is
- 00:09:14meant for like curtains but uh yeah I
- 00:09:17just put some here some here and it's
- 00:09:20basically keeping everything closed
- 00:09:22together pressed together to avoid the
- 00:09:24panel popping out it took me three
- 00:09:26attempts to design a back blade that
- 00:09:27will not only fit with some innocent
- 00:09:29plastic being sacrificed in the process
- 00:09:31but also to figure out where to split
- 00:09:33the plastic parts since I can't print
- 00:09:36this back plate in one piece in either
- 00:09:38of my home printers I have an A1 and an
- 00:09:40A1 Mini and both of them can print this
- 00:09:43entire piece in one go for some reason
- 00:09:45the first time around I really wanted to
- 00:09:46use my A1 Mini instead of my full size
- 00:09:48A1 and the bambo A1 Mini has a smaller
- 00:09:51bed compared to the A1 so I had to make
- 00:09:54like super small parts and I didn't
- 00:09:56really think this true I was basically
- 00:09:58ending up with a F Breaking Bad plates
- 00:10:00in having to Like Glue the parts at the
- 00:10:02edges with no contact surface second
- 00:10:04version was way better and I actually
- 00:10:06designed a real proper way to join the
- 00:10:09parts by using some super strong
- 00:10:11double-sided tape that came with a user
- 00:10:13manual for some reason but I made this
- 00:10:15one too wide so the eye me wouldn't
- 00:10:17close and after making a third version
- 00:10:19triming the sides I managed to make it
- 00:10:21work finally if you're wondering why it
- 00:10:24has this peculiar shape that's because
- 00:10:27we also have here a working webcam I got
- 00:10:31a USB webcam module from AliExpress it's
- 00:10:34not the best but it's acceptable and it
- 00:10:37fits perfectly here and I just taped
- 00:10:40that one down I didn't bother building
- 00:10:41anything fancy for that but what I did
- 00:10:44bother building something fancy for our
- 00:10:47speakers here let me actually put this
- 00:10:49back and while I put this back small
- 00:10:51story time to tell you about the
- 00:10:53speakers here because you might be
- 00:10:54wondering what are those speakers and
- 00:10:56why are they so small why are they
- 00:10:58mounted that way there's this playay
- 00:11:00board right here that I use to control
- 00:11:02the laptop panel this is one of three
- 00:11:05boards that I bought and it's the only
- 00:11:07one that turns on automatically when you
- 00:11:09plug in a cable and that's important
- 00:11:12because I always meant this board to
- 00:11:13stay inside so the user wouldn't have
- 00:11:16access to the buttons to turn the
- 00:11:18monitor on now this board right here is
- 00:11:21perfectly fine for handling video
- 00:11:23however when you're building a display
- 00:11:25instead of an iMac housing you also want
- 00:11:28audio you want to be able to have some
- 00:11:30speakers built in because it would be
- 00:11:33weird to not have them it wouldn't be
- 00:11:35convincing so it has this connector
- 00:11:37right here that on this board is
- 00:11:39unmarked but on the other two boards
- 00:11:41that I got they have the same connector
- 00:11:43and there it is marked a speaker
- 00:11:45connector after checking the AliExpress
- 00:11:47listing again they were talking about
- 00:11:49this as a two wat speaker interface
- 00:11:51which doesn't really help me figure out
- 00:11:53whatever cable goes here but after using
- 00:11:55Google Lens I managed to figure out that
- 00:11:57this was a ph1 25 connector and after
- 00:12:01searching that on AliExpress I managed
- 00:12:03to find some speakers specifically made
- 00:12:05for these kinds of boards using this
- 00:12:06connector and they do
- 00:12:08[Music]
- 00:12:15work I had no idea how to mount them
- 00:12:19here originally until I figured out that
- 00:12:22I could use this uh holes here on the
- 00:12:24Basel in the metal part so I made this
- 00:12:27ramboo shaped housings for the speakers
- 00:12:30I modeled them I printed them using my
- 00:12:32A1 Mini this time because they are
- 00:12:34actually perfect they're small so I
- 00:12:36could print them without having to split
- 00:12:38them into please never do this they do
- 00:12:40work but their quality stinks they're
- 00:12:43not good speakers but they are speakers
- 00:12:45they're stereo and they work so that's
- 00:12:49how I mounted the display to the front
- 00:12:51Basel it's a mess okay don't get me
- 00:12:54wrong this is not how you should do
- 00:12:56stuff but it works and effectively we
- 00:12:59just have two cables that uh connect the
- 00:13:01back that we're going to talk about in a
- 00:13:03second to the front here this webcam one
- 00:13:06and the display one and I'm actually
- 00:13:09happy with how this turned out it's not
- 00:13:11super clean it's not like perfect but it
- 00:13:14works and it's not like you're going to
- 00:13:17notice it when everything is closed
- 00:13:19unless you have X-ray vision in which
- 00:13:21case you're probably Superman it is now
- 00:13:24time to talk
- 00:13:26about this thing but before we do that
- 00:13:31let me take a second to talk about
- 00:13:32today's sponsor bamboo lab you might be
- 00:13:34rightfully wondering fam what is this
- 00:13:36background why are you standing in a
- 00:13:37kitchenette and the reason is that this
- 00:13:40door right here is only working thanks
- 00:13:43to my bamboo A1 mini printer that's a
- 00:13:45weird story basically uh this door has
- 00:13:48been here since forever and it's a very
- 00:13:49cheap plastic door it's working using
- 00:13:51some hooks here on the top that
- 00:13:54eventually after years of f got
- 00:13:56destroyed and I couldn't find any
- 00:13:58replacements for them they were like
- 00:14:00completely impossible to find and so I
- 00:14:02just took one of the hooks that still
- 00:14:04worked one of the plastic hooks I
- 00:14:07recreated it in 3D and I just printed it
- 00:14:10in PG with my A1 Mini and now I have a
- 00:14:14working door here I have a mini ITX case
- 00:14:16that I'm building for my Nest this was
- 00:14:18actually a project by a fellow YouTuber
- 00:14:20that I downloaded I modified this using
- 00:14:22bamboo slicer to have a window in the
- 00:14:24front for a USB screen but then I
- 00:14:27decided I'm not going to use a USB
- 00:14:29screen so I'm also now printing a
- 00:14:30different front blade for it which has a
- 00:14:33fake logo that I'm printing using the
- 00:14:35multiple colors print feature of the AMS
- 00:14:37light and yeah I'm a total newbie when
- 00:14:39it comes to 3D printing but I love my
- 00:14:41bamboo printers they just work like
- 00:14:43appliances it's extremely easy to use
- 00:14:45them I don't have to think about
- 00:14:46leveling the bed manually or anything
- 00:14:48like that the printer does everything
- 00:14:49for me I just need to think about what I
- 00:14:52want to print and then print it using my
- 00:14:54computer or my phone I can just use the
- 00:14:56bamboo handy app so check out the A1 and
- 00:14:58a One Mini in the link in description
- 00:15:00and thanks again to Bamboo for
- 00:15:02sponsoring this video before we go back
- 00:15:03to the video I want to chime in for
- 00:15:05transparency and say that some of you
- 00:15:07made me aware of a controversy going on
- 00:15:09with bamboo right now since they changed
- 00:15:11the way Bamboo Connect Works which is
- 00:15:13essentially something that lets you
- 00:15:14connect to your bamboo printers using
- 00:15:16third party slicers I'm going to be
- 00:15:18honest I had no idea this was even a
- 00:15:20feature I only used bamboo studio for
- 00:15:22what I do I'm perfectly happy with
- 00:15:24bamboo Studio however for the sake of
- 00:15:26transparency I'm going to leave a link
- 00:15:27in the description to uh the first
- 00:15:29article about these changes that bamboo
- 00:15:31made since I've heard a lot of
- 00:15:32misinformation about this so I'd rather
- 00:15:34just link you to an actual news source
- 00:15:36and let you know precisely what's going
- 00:15:38on from them that said back to the video
- 00:15:41if you're expecting some masterfully
- 00:15:42crafted custom PCB think again because
- 00:15:44you're about to Embark into a journey to
- 00:15:47Jun town where everything works and from
- 00:15:49the outside looks perfect but on the
- 00:15:51inside it is basically an engineer
- 00:15:53Nightmare and a potential fire hazard
- 00:15:54okay ready ready for this let's [ __ ]
- 00:15:57go all right so I'm taking a p from dkos
- 00:15:59for this recording with my iPhone
- 00:16:01because it's way easier to explain what
- 00:16:04I did here and I've removed everything
- 00:16:06except for this mysterious box I mean
- 00:16:09all of you have already figured out what
- 00:16:10it is and this one which are the bases
- 00:16:14that are like stuck to the case right
- 00:16:15now so uh let's start from the brains
- 00:16:19that make everything work this is a
- 00:16:22normal USB hub that has a very special
- 00:16:24feature that basically turns it into the
- 00:16:26brains of the operation here it has a as
- 00:16:29you can see here this
- 00:16:32USBC video output so what this means is
- 00:16:35that uh if I connect this USB hub to my
- 00:16:38steam deck or my MacBook Pro anything
- 00:16:41that supports USBC DP Out video output
- 00:16:44we can then use this USBC output right
- 00:16:47here to interface with a USBC
- 00:16:51screen it is connecting but it's it's
- 00:16:54not getting enough power don't worry
- 00:16:57this is normal we also need to give it
- 00:16:59power so there's this PD input here and
- 00:17:02we need a USBC cable for that there we
- 00:17:05go we have this one right here let's
- 00:17:07plug it here let's connect a battery
- 00:17:11Bank okay we have enough power here
- 00:17:14let's plug
- 00:17:15everything back again and as you'll see
- 00:17:18here now we are going to have our steam
- 00:17:21deck connected to the USB hub which is
- 00:17:22providing it a video output and also
- 00:17:25power thanks to the PD Port now why are
- 00:17:28we going through this USB hub here if we
- 00:17:32can just connect the monitor directly to
- 00:17:34the steam deck the reason is that I
- 00:17:37don't just want to get video output here
- 00:17:40I also want all of the ports here on the
- 00:17:42back of the iMac to work and that's what
- 00:17:45the USB C Hub is supposed to do here the
- 00:17:47ideal solution here would have been
- 00:17:49designing a custom PCB board that is
- 00:17:51emulating the max motherboard fitting
- 00:17:53every single hole here perfectly but
- 00:17:56right now I don't know how to design
- 00:17:58custom PCB so like configures I make do
- 00:18:01and my extremely brain D solution is
- 00:18:03using USB extenders and Splitters I have
- 00:18:07a bunch of them right here and I'll
- 00:18:09explain what we're going to do with them
- 00:18:11but yeah essentially I just put a lot of
- 00:18:14extension cables here trying to make
- 00:18:16them fit perfectly uh in the holes on
- 00:18:19the back of the iMac and after cutting
- 00:18:21the external rubber on some of them or
- 00:18:24straight up [ __ ] up some others I
- 00:18:27managed to sort of make it work however
- 00:18:29I also wanted a USB C Hub to connect to
- 00:18:32my steam deck or MacBook not with a mail
- 00:18:35plug like this but with a female plug so
- 00:18:38I bought these couplers here which
- 00:18:40actually fit perfectly and they are
- 00:18:43rated for Thunderbolt yeah effectively
- 00:18:45thanks to them we have female ports to
- 00:18:47connect our power and our devices
- 00:18:49directly to the back of the iMac these
- 00:18:51are definitely not be spoke and they
- 00:18:53stick out a bit but it's fine it's it's
- 00:18:55fine and now we have to figure out well
- 00:18:58everything else and that is really just
- 00:19:00a combination of usba a Splitters usba a
- 00:19:04to USBC converters and trial and error
- 00:19:07modifying cables hoping that they're
- 00:19:09going to fit properly on the back of the
- 00:19:11iMac I am very proud of how I managed to
- 00:19:13make the three USB ports here work
- 00:19:15because it's literally just a very cheap
- 00:19:17cable that I stripped from its
- 00:19:18protective Rubber and then physically
- 00:19:20stuck on the case here with some very
- 00:19:22strong tape I had the same with the
- 00:19:24audio cables here about a very cheap USB
- 00:19:27sound card and I used audio Jack
- 00:19:29extenders to extend the audio input and
- 00:19:31output Jack to the back of the iMac and
- 00:19:34also just stuck everything there using
- 00:19:36that tape I also tried doing this for
- 00:19:38the ethernet port but the cable was way
- 00:19:40too thick even after modifying it so the
- 00:19:43only way to have ethernet here would be
- 00:19:45having the cable sticking out and I mean
- 00:19:47that works if I really need to use it
- 00:19:50but right now that and what was the
- 00:19:52video output of the iMac are not
- 00:19:53connected to anything I don't have
- 00:19:55anything coming out of those ports but
- 00:19:57now let's talk about was on the inside
- 00:20:00because there's a reason if I made this
- 00:20:01spaghetti mess and asides from getting
- 00:20:03the USB splitter to work it's because I
- 00:20:06wanted some devices to be integrated
- 00:20:08here and to Simply connect to whatever
- 00:20:09device it's connected to the USB hub
- 00:20:11with one cable let's start with the
- 00:20:13elephant in the room the super drive
- 00:20:15here which is not an original Super
- 00:20:17Drive I did buy one however it didn't
- 00:20:19work it didn't want to like take discs
- 00:20:21so I returned it and I bought a bootleg
- 00:20:24one a fake one from Amazon that one
- 00:20:26worked perfectly so I opened it up I
- 00:20:28discovered that I had to like break the
- 00:20:30housing in order to just get access to
- 00:20:32the rboard and after reusing one of
- 00:20:34those first failed attempts of building
- 00:20:36a back plate for my LCD panel I managed
- 00:20:38to mount it on the back of the iMac I
- 00:20:40managed to make it align perfectly and
- 00:20:42after connecting it to the hub it just
- 00:20:45works which is insane let's open VC
- 00:20:49audio
- 00:20:51CD come
- 00:20:54on it's it's reading it's a
- 00:20:56city there we go oh these are the
- 00:20:59internal speakers that I put in the
- 00:21:01display they suck they are not the Apple
- 00:21:03ones okay I switch to the steam de ones
- 00:21:07uh but yeah we have a working City Drive
- 00:21:12here too the webc come from the front
- 00:21:13Basel of course also connects to the hub
- 00:21:15that is pretty straightforward but the
- 00:21:17thing that I'm most proud of here that I
- 00:21:19managed to connect to this and get it to
- 00:21:22work is the fler dongle which is the
- 00:21:24small dongle right here that lets me use
- 00:21:27infrared remotes with
- 00:21:29this family Mac the iMac G5 originally
- 00:21:31shipped with the Apple remote the first
- 00:21:34gen one I have this one new in box that
- 00:21:36we're going to open today we're going to
- 00:21:37make it non-collectible this is
- 00:21:39extremely challenging to open for some
- 00:21:41reason after replacing the death
- 00:21:43batteries which were here for 20 years
- 00:21:45now with some that I stole from a zigby
- 00:21:47button and setting up the remote using
- 00:21:49the Flair app this is not sponsored by
- 00:21:50flare by the way I just really like
- 00:21:52their dongles I can use this apple
- 00:21:54remote with whatever is connected to
- 00:21:56this monitor iMac thing f also since we
- 00:21:59are recording our own infrared signals
- 00:22:01we can literally use any remote we want
- 00:22:04we're are not limited to the Apple
- 00:22:05remote so you can literally take your AC
- 00:22:09remote and use that I don't know why you
- 00:22:11would do that but it works the iMac is
- 00:22:14specifically designed to accommodate for
- 00:22:15infrared signals because it has a
- 00:22:17translucent part in the Basel here which
- 00:22:20is where the original infrared module
- 00:22:21will sit I've just taped my FLIR dongle
- 00:22:24to sort a point there from the inside
- 00:22:25and it works they just super junky on
- 00:22:28the inside but from the outside it's
- 00:22:30totally slick also since the USB hub
- 00:22:32actually comes with a built-in micro SD
- 00:22:34card reader I put a half gigabyte micro
- 00:22:36inside of it which gives me a lot of
- 00:22:38space for my Steam games it's not super
- 00:22:41fast but it's fast enough for a lot of
- 00:22:42games and especially retro games and
- 00:22:44party games which is why I build this
- 00:22:46entire thing in the first place you know
- 00:22:48that photo of Steve Jobs having an ey NE
- 00:22:50like this yeah I kind of get it now
- 00:22:53because after spending two weeks
- 00:22:54building this and tailoring it to my
- 00:22:56specific needs I've been using it a lot
- 00:22:59and I've been loving it however I have
- 00:23:02to of course accept that it's not
- 00:23:04perfect and that I could make it way
- 00:23:06better it's just that I've never worked
- 00:23:08on something like this Hardware modding
- 00:23:10retrofitting from scratch before so uh
- 00:23:13this has been a learning experience and
- 00:23:15there is a lot of stuff that I could
- 00:23:17improve here from how I mounted the
- 00:23:19ports on the back here because the tape
- 00:23:21is working and it's holding everything
- 00:23:23in place but it's kind of Wiggly it's
- 00:23:25kind of janky what do I mean by
- 00:23:27jankiness for example in setup is that
- 00:23:29if I disconnect the power from the
- 00:23:31display now okay and then I plug it back
- 00:23:36even though it starts getting power
- 00:23:39again makes this ticking bomb sound
- 00:23:42every time uh but yeah it's powered now
- 00:23:44again however as you can see we got no
- 00:23:46video output because every time you plug
- 00:23:49something to this monitor you have to
- 00:23:51remember you need to First plug the
- 00:23:53power cable in and then only after you
- 00:23:56do that plug the uh data cable to your
- 00:24:00device it's it's weird but I don't know
- 00:24:02if the problem here lays in the display
- 00:24:04board or the USB hub there is a problem
- 00:24:06with the handshake where like if I don't
- 00:24:08plug the power in first then uh the
- 00:24:12display can't even like recognize that
- 00:24:14something has been plugged in it's weird
- 00:24:16also another thing you got to keep in
- 00:24:17mind when you're using this is that it
- 00:24:19uses a lot of power so if you want to
- 00:24:21plug a battery Bank you got to have a
- 00:24:23pretty beefy battery Bank in this case I
- 00:24:26am using a 20 Vols one it's like USB PD
- 00:24:31rated and everything and it works fine
- 00:24:33one very peculiar problem is that the
- 00:24:35USBC cers deers however their name the
- 00:24:38male to female things here that I'm
- 00:24:40using to convert the cables into ports
- 00:24:43only work on one side which is not
- 00:24:46normal but the most important problems
- 00:24:48here are actually related to the USB hub
- 00:24:51that I'm using because so this is
- 00:24:54working pretty much perfectly with my uh
- 00:24:56steam Deck with my phone when it comes
- 00:24:58to my MacBook sometimes it doesn't like
- 00:25:01some stuff that is plugged inside of
- 00:25:03here for example the DVD drive doesn't
- 00:25:05work pretty often I don't know why it's
- 00:25:08working with my steim deck it's not
- 00:25:09working with my MacBook however uh that
- 00:25:12already happened with other devices my
- 00:25:14MacBook is kind of Moody when it comes
- 00:25:16to what USBC stuff I'm plug into it so
- 00:25:20maybe it's a Macbook Problem by far the
- 00:25:22biggest problem that I have with this
- 00:25:23was with my Windows computer because
- 00:25:25even though it supports USB CDP out out
- 00:25:28output it is not providing the USB hub
- 00:25:31and the monitor with enough power I
- 00:25:33think that's because it doesn't expect
- 00:25:34like a fullon USB hub connected to a
- 00:25:38video Port that said I actually love
- 00:25:40this I'm using it super often and I I'm
- 00:25:43looking forward to have this as part of
- 00:25:45my like video set in the background
- 00:25:47displaying stuff because it has this
- 00:25:49like perfect y 2K aesthetic and uh now
- 00:25:53it's also got Modern Hardware so I am
- 00:25:55extremely happy with what I designed and
- 00:25:57made here in order to complete a look
- 00:25:59here I've actually bought this apple USB
- 00:26:01keyboard that was originally shipped
- 00:26:03with the iMac so that's actually its
- 00:26:05keyboard is was actually meant to go
- 00:26:07with this computer and even though it's
- 00:26:09a membran keyboard it's a pretty good
- 00:26:11membrane keyboard I could happily live
- 00:26:12with that honestly what I couldn't live
- 00:26:14with at all is actually the mouse it's
- 00:26:17got no right click button because Apple
- 00:26:19used to be like that uh it's also like
- 00:26:22extremely slow extremely it's it's not
- 00:26:25good what the hell is happening now okay
- 00:26:28uh yeah so I I would suggest you get a
- 00:26:31proper Mouse I just wanted to get this
- 00:26:33one because like to complete the look
- 00:26:36here I I needed one okay I couldn't
- 00:26:38really avoid it but if you're actually
- 00:26:39planning on using this daily please get
- 00:26:41a decent Mouse don't do this if you're
- 00:26:43wondering how much I spent to build this
- 00:26:45it was around1 to $125 including
- 00:26:49everything however that cost could have
- 00:26:51been brought down significantly if I
- 00:26:53didn't buy most stuff locally if I
- 00:26:55bought everything from China the price
- 00:26:57would have been significantly lower and
- 00:26:59yeah I know there's going to be some
- 00:27:01people in the comments saying stuff like
- 00:27:02oh you spent a lot of money just to make
- 00:27:04this look like an iMac when you could
- 00:27:06have bought this generic display from
- 00:27:08Amazon and like yeah that's true I know
- 00:27:10that some people don't like apple I know
- 00:27:12that some people think that this is a
- 00:27:14useless effort but my monkey rain really
- 00:27:16likes this kind of Y Tok static and I
- 00:27:19really wanted to create something that
- 00:27:20was both modern and look like something
- 00:27:23from 20 years ago that's pretty much it
- 00:27:25when I was a kid these computers were
- 00:27:26like the object of my desire I really
- 00:27:28wanted one of them but Apple products
- 00:27:30were expensive my family didn't want to
- 00:27:32spend for them so today as a grown adult
- 00:27:35I'm trying to bring back those memories
- 00:27:37and enhance them and also try to bring
- 00:27:39something useful to life in the process
- 00:27:41because remember that this iMac if I
- 00:27:43didn't buy it was destined for the
- 00:27:45Landfield so I actually turned something
- 00:27:47that would have been waste into
- 00:27:49something very cool and that's going to
- 00:27:51be a part of my set from now on also
- 00:27:53about all of the jankiness you have to
- 00:27:55keep in mind this is the first time I
- 00:27:57try to build anything like this from
- 00:27:59scratch without any instructions and
- 00:28:01going forward I would like to learn how
- 00:28:03to actually design pcbs because it would
- 00:28:06make projects like this look way cleaner
- 00:28:08and it would spare me having all these
- 00:28:10weird issues with like USBC that are
- 00:28:13probably also connected to how much I am
- 00:28:15string to have here that's something
- 00:28:17that I can't ignore that said going
- 00:28:19forward there is one thing that I really
- 00:28:20would like to build and it's still based
- 00:28:22on an iMac but it will be the G4 because
- 00:28:25this looks so good and that would be
- 00:28:27retrofitting and iMac G4 with modern
- 00:28:30computer hardware and I was actually
- 00:28:33thinking about like putting a framework
- 00:28:35motherboard inside of the computer if
- 00:28:37you don't know framework they make
- 00:28:38computers that are repairable and
- 00:28:39upgradeable and they also sell the
- 00:28:42individual parts for repairs and also
- 00:28:44just like for DIY projects like this
- 00:28:46ones on their website so you can go
- 00:28:48there and actually buy a modern laptop
- 00:28:50motherboard that is also straight up
- 00:28:52design for DIY project someone on the
- 00:28:54framework forums actually did this with
- 00:28:56a vintage MacBook Pro they retrofit a
- 00:28:58new framework motherboard inside of it
- 00:29:00so what you see here is a modern
- 00:29:02computer and they made custom boards for
- 00:29:04everything and oh my God I I really want
- 00:29:06to build something like this someday
- 00:29:08it's so cool I guess that's it for today
- 00:29:10this video was the Natural Evolution of
- 00:29:12my eyesight one some of you were like oh
- 00:29:14you didn't actually build this you're
- 00:29:16just following instructions well guess
- 00:29:18what look at this sh look at this fire
- 00:29:19hazard is your fault I have to say
- 00:29:21making this gave me a completely
- 00:29:23different understanding of how much
- 00:29:25effort fellow YouTuber bring shout out
- 00:29:27to him by the way way he's a great guy
- 00:29:29but I now get how interesting and also
- 00:29:32difficult it is to retrofit something
- 00:29:33from scratch but it's also very
- 00:29:35addicting and rewarding so there is also
- 00:29:37that side and also considering his aid
- 00:29:39for physical media and the fact that I
- 00:29:41literally went out of my way to put up
- 00:29:43DVD drive inside of this IMC thing I
- 00:29:45guess I'm canonically his enemy now I
- 00:29:47didn't want to be his enemy okay I'm
- 00:29:49sorry
