Jackie highlights the complexities of relocating with families and pets and briefly introduces guests Janine and Carl, who moved to Panama with their son.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
The conversation turns to Janine and Carl, who start having technical issues but eventually join the live stream to share their experience. They discuss moving from Southern California to the Coronado area in Panama. They prioritize the proximity to beaches and schools as important factors in their decision to relocate. Despite technical challenges, they communicate their transitional journey of moving to a new country and school system with their son.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
Janine and Carl elaborate on their move, detailing how they decided upon Panama without having visited before. They express that their son's well-being was a significant consideration, managing the transition from a familiar environment in California to a new, uncharted life in Panama. Overcoming communication hurdles, they explore their rationale for choosing international schools over public or homeschooling options, emphasizing business commitments.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
The couple explores the logistics of selecting international schools amidst pandemic restrictions when schools were initially closed for in-person visits. They navigate early decisions, including enrolling in an international school and later moving to home-schooling as a more flexible option. The discussion highlights the evolving fit of educational choices for their son amidst their transient lifestyle in Panama.

The conversation shifts to the costs of education, outlining the price range of international schools in Panama, which can vary greatly based on location—ranging from $80 to $700 monthly. - 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
Janine and Carl elaborate on their decision to eventually choose homeschooling, citing flexibility and the opportunity to avoid unnecessary commuting as priorities. They emphasize that while international schools in their area offer high-quality education, personal preferences for transient living and recreational flexibility led them to homeschooling.
- 00:30:00 - 00:35:00
Jackie interjects to share insights into the importance of children's integration into new environments. She underscores this with anecdotes about other families who modified living arrangements to better suit their children's social needs. Jackie stresses the need to balance parental desires with children’s happiness to ensure a smooth transition when moving abroad.
- 00:35:00 - 00:40:00
Further discussion on social integration covers considerations around exposing children to diverse cultural environments and languages. Jackie and the guests highlight how involvement with local Panamanians and expats can enhance the living experience. They reinforce the value in allowing children the chance to engage with local cultures for personal growth.
- 00:40:00 - 00:45:00
Returning to practical relocation advice, Jackie and the guests discuss what documentation is essential for school enrollment in Panama. They cover flexibility in enrollment times, vaccine records (not generally required), and basic identification needs for integrating into the school system.
- 00:45:00 - 00:50:00
The conversation includes personal lessons learned and advice for potential movers, such as the merits of flexibility, not rushing school enrollments, and the benefits of gradual cultural and social integration.
- 00:50:00 - 00:57:13

- 00:00:18live stream once we get janine and carl
- 00:00:22on the live stream with us um they'll be
- 00:00:24joining us uh shortly for those of you
- 00:00:27that are new to the live stream we'd
- 00:00:30really like to know where you're from so
- 00:00:32if you could please type into the chat
- 00:00:34where you're from i see you've got some
- 00:00:36people from oregon and rhode island and
- 00:00:38toronto canada
- 00:00:41uh bocce panama hi debbie she's here
- 00:00:44from vocate
- 00:00:45and uh so let us know where you're from
- 00:00:48it's just interesting for us to know
- 00:00:50where people are that are thinking about
- 00:00:52moving to panama you know it changes
- 00:00:54from year to year so just a little bit
- 00:00:57of background about who i am
- 00:00:59and kind of my relocation tours my name
- 00:01:01is jackie lang and i moved to panama in
- 00:01:042010
- 00:01:05and shortly after that some of my
- 00:01:07friends were saying hey i've been kind
- 00:01:09of thinking about moving to panama and
- 00:01:11they asked me to do a little tour for
- 00:01:13them and i did for eight people
- 00:01:16and then i started getting other calls
- 00:01:18from people interested in a tour so
- 00:01:21that's how panama relocation tours was
- 00:01:23born i had no plans to move down to
- 00:01:26panama and start a tour business i've
- 00:01:28been a real estate investor for 25 years
- 00:01:30when i moved here so a tour business
- 00:01:34wasn't something that i'd done before
- 00:01:36but it's obviously working out pretty
- 00:01:38well we just finished tour number 179
- 00:01:42and if you look on our trip advisor for
- 00:01:44panama relocation tours you'll see that
- 00:01:47we got a lot of great reviews
- 00:01:49about that tour also on facebook we have
- 00:01:51a lot of great reviews on facebook also
- 00:01:55um so
- 00:01:56it's a big decision to move to panama
- 00:01:59whether you're moving with children or
- 00:02:00not moving with children moving with
- 00:02:02pets or not moving to pets but the more
- 00:02:05elements that are involved in the move
- 00:02:07where it's just one person moving it's
- 00:02:09easy enough to make the move when
- 00:02:11there's two people
- 00:02:12then you have to they both have to
- 00:02:14mutually decide is this something i want
- 00:02:16to do and then when you have children
- 00:02:19into it or pets into it there's just
- 00:02:21more moving parts that are necessary to
- 00:02:25be able to make the move so i've invited
- 00:02:28janine and carl
- 00:02:30to join us because they moved to panama
- 00:02:33with their son
- 00:02:35i think it's a little bit more than a
- 00:02:36year ago they moved to panama with her
- 00:02:39son they're working on getting a
- 00:02:40microphone set up
- 00:02:42let me see if they're ready
- 00:02:45with their microphone put a thumbs up if
- 00:02:47you're ready with a with your microphone
- 00:02:51janine
- 00:02:53okay we'll give it a try
- 00:02:56okay this is janine and carl hi
- 00:03:00thanks for joining us did you get a
- 00:03:02microphone set up
- 00:03:05it did is it working yeah we can't hear
- 00:03:07you
- 00:03:08i'm gonna i'm gonna take you off screen
- 00:03:10and i'll come back in just a little bit
- 00:03:12whenever we give it another try so talk
- 00:03:14it in the microphone and see if that
- 00:03:15works so the microphone is working on
- 00:03:18our end
- 00:03:19and you still go here
- 00:03:24i don't know
- 00:03:26i'll be right back i'll be right back so
- 00:03:29i'm going to take them off screen while
- 00:03:30they're working on that you know
- 00:03:33for me especially you know when i first
- 00:03:35started doing these live streams i am so
- 00:03:38technically challenged you wouldn't
- 00:03:40believe it
- 00:03:41but i couldn't figure out because my
- 00:03:44screen was just really really dark all
- 00:03:46the time and i bought more lights and i
- 00:03:48bought more lights and i still had a
- 00:03:49really dark screen and then i had
- 00:03:52someone come over and see if he could
- 00:03:53figure it out and he said oh it's the
- 00:03:54camera on your computer you can't your
- 00:03:57camera is not good enough for a live
- 00:03:58stream so i bought a little 39
- 00:04:01camera for my these live streams and it
- 00:04:04seemed to solve the problem um i still
- 00:04:06have some lighting not very much
- 00:04:08um but you know just one little thing
- 00:04:11but
- 00:04:12a lot of us that um
- 00:04:15live here in panama we don't do live
- 00:04:18streams we don't do conference calls we
- 00:04:20don't do those kind of things and so
- 00:04:22it's a learning curve to learn how to do
- 00:04:25uh these live streams and the conference
- 00:04:27calls and everything else so while we're
- 00:04:29waiting on
- 00:04:31um janine and carl who are going to be
- 00:04:33with us in just a little bit um can
- 00:04:35everybody hear me okay can you hear me
- 00:04:37okay let me know in the chat room if you
- 00:04:40can hear me
- 00:04:43okay so john said that he could hear
- 00:04:45them but it was very low so let's go try
- 00:04:47it again
- 00:04:49so janine and carl can let's see if we
- 00:04:52can hear you now say something well we
- 00:04:54have our mic set up can you hear me
- 00:04:56well because i can't hear them
- 00:05:00i don't know because everything doesn't
- 00:05:02hear you yeah they can hear you okay
- 00:05:07even if i can't hear what you're saying
- 00:05:09they can hear what you're saying somehow
- 00:05:11rather in this uh cyber world i don't
- 00:05:14know how things work so i'm gonna ask
- 00:05:17jackie to turn up her volume
- 00:05:20even though i can't hear a word that
- 00:05:21you're saying so long as the audience
- 00:05:23can hear that's all that really matters
- 00:05:26so first of all let's start out with
- 00:05:28when did you move to panama and where
- 00:05:31did you move in panama
- 00:05:33um so it's been let's see
- 00:05:36a little over
- 00:05:37a year
- 00:05:38uh we're in coronado area so we moved
- 00:05:42here
- 00:05:43um
- 00:05:45we
- 00:05:45we kind of decided we'd never been to
- 00:05:47panama and we kind of just decided well
- 00:05:49let's just let's just try it out and we
- 00:05:52came here first i came here first during
- 00:05:54the pandemic
- 00:05:55and researched a whole bunch of
- 00:05:56locations and came here specifically
- 00:05:59because we thought it would work out
- 00:06:00being close enough proximity to the city
- 00:06:03giving us that flexibility of being able
- 00:06:05to go to the beach and then of course
- 00:06:07coronado had schools
- 00:06:09so we thought maybe that would be good
- 00:06:11for our third now thirteen-year-old son
- 00:06:16so maybe someone mentioned to jackie to
- 00:06:18turn up her volume
- 00:06:20or to say it differently to check the
- 00:06:23speaker okay i have your volume turned
- 00:06:26up all the way as high as it will go i
- 00:06:29have your volume turned up
- 00:06:31um
- 00:06:32if someone could type
- 00:06:34i can't hear you but you know it doesn't
- 00:06:36matter if i can hear you what matters is
- 00:06:38that they can hear you that's all that
- 00:06:39really matters so they can hear you and
- 00:06:42that's good so when you moved to panama
- 00:06:45you moved here with your son and how did
- 00:06:49you break the news to him that hey we're
- 00:06:51going to move to another country oh what
- 00:06:53do you have to say about that you know i
- 00:06:56i don't really remember
- 00:06:59what he had to say about it um i think
- 00:07:02he really misses where we used to live
- 00:07:04we came from southern california and
- 00:07:07he had gone to the same school his whole
- 00:07:09life pretty much and he really missed
- 00:07:11his friends he still does but virtually
- 00:07:14everything kind of worked out because he
- 00:07:16could still keep in touch with them
- 00:07:17online
- 00:07:18so our son he seems pretty he's he's
- 00:07:22pretty adjusted he likes it
- 00:07:24he misses home
- 00:07:26this isn't home to him yet but i think
- 00:07:29that's pretty normal
- 00:07:31okay so um someone said to turn your um
- 00:07:35i i made some edits to your sound to
- 00:07:38turn down any echoes that might happen
- 00:07:40so if anybody still hears an echo on
- 00:07:43janine and carl's microphone then let me
- 00:07:45know because once again i can't hear
- 00:07:47what they're saying but i'm glad that
- 00:07:48you can hear what they're saying so
- 00:07:50hopefully that's better
- 00:07:52so
- 00:07:52um
- 00:07:54i know you you uh whenever you move to
- 00:07:56panama if i remember right you you
- 00:07:58didn't come on a panama relocation tour
- 00:08:00but you bought our complete panama
- 00:08:02relocation guide and then you went on a
- 00:08:05private tour did you both go on the
- 00:08:07private tour or was it just you jeanine
- 00:08:10i think just you went yeah um and you
- 00:08:12knew that you wanted to live somewhere
- 00:08:15in the coronado area because you're
- 00:08:17beach people there's beach people
- 00:08:19there's mountain people and you guys are
- 00:08:21beach people so did the private tour
- 00:08:24help you isolate the area that you
- 00:08:26thought you were most interested in
- 00:08:28yeah for sure i i think um first of all
- 00:08:31your guide
- 00:08:32was super helpful
- 00:08:34i i mean and it just continues to even
- 00:08:37be helpful now i still use the guide um
- 00:08:40and i was able to do i'm a researcher
- 00:08:43and i knew that i wanted specific things
- 00:08:46and i was able to to find somebody to
- 00:08:49take me to all of those different places
- 00:08:51that i wanted to see
- 00:08:53i only came for a week
- 00:08:55so it was really um
- 00:08:58we weren't sure
- 00:08:59it was trust a lot of trust let's trust
- 00:09:02and see if it works out so yes we used
- 00:09:04the guide and it was very very helpful
- 00:09:08did you find a rental while you were
- 00:09:10here on your um exploratory trip
- 00:09:14yes so i did i i found a bunch of houses
- 00:09:19um that we thought would work for us
- 00:09:22before even coming out
- 00:09:25and then i used the time that i was in
- 00:09:28coronado
- 00:09:29to look at the specific places and i
- 00:09:32found one that worked and then once we
- 00:09:34came back we started to negotiate
- 00:09:37um with our agent and with the
- 00:09:41homeowners that we're renting from right
- 00:09:42now
- 00:09:53so one other thing that i was really
- 00:09:55curious about so
- 00:09:57um
- 00:09:58i knew you already had already decided
- 00:10:01that you really wanted to put your son
- 00:10:03into one of the international schools in
- 00:10:05the area as opposed to doing
- 00:10:07homeschooling or the public schools in
- 00:10:09the area the public schools by the way
- 00:10:12are spanish or spanish so if you don't
- 00:10:15know spanish fluently then it's going to
- 00:10:18be a real challenge for a kid to just be
- 00:10:20thrown into a public school situation
- 00:10:23and homeschooling is a good option for
- 00:10:25some people except you both have a
- 00:10:28business that keeps you super busy all
- 00:10:30the time anyway so homeschooling really
- 00:10:33wasn't a really good option because it
- 00:10:35would take too much time away from your
- 00:10:37business
- 00:10:38um
- 00:10:40so someone said i am unmuted so you did
- 00:10:43you check
- 00:10:45let us know how you evaluated some of
- 00:10:48the different i think there's about five
- 00:10:49international schools in your area four
- 00:10:51or five so
- 00:10:53um how did you evaluate them and make a
- 00:10:56decision on which one to go with
- 00:10:58okay so maybe some of you can fill
- 00:11:00jackie in on this
- 00:11:02because we have a very interesting
- 00:11:05situation
- 00:11:06um we came out or i came out during the
- 00:11:09pandemic and most of the schools weren't
- 00:11:12open
- 00:11:13so they were not i couldn't really see
- 00:11:16what school looked like and so i went to
- 00:11:20at that point
- 00:11:22they were barely even taking
- 00:11:24visitors but i was able to tour a few of
- 00:11:27the schools on my short journey here and
- 00:11:30decide on the one that felt like it
- 00:11:33would be the best fit for our son
- 00:11:36um
- 00:11:37so we started out with kind of going
- 00:11:41blindly because the schools weren't open
- 00:11:43we really didn't have the ability to
- 00:11:45truly tour to really have much of a
- 00:11:47discussion but we knew that there were
- 00:11:48schools and we felt that it would work
- 00:11:51so we came in we um signed him up after
- 00:11:54only being here for one month
- 00:11:57and the actual school that we we decided
- 00:12:00on just didn't work out for us it wasn't
- 00:12:02for our son it just he we found that um
- 00:12:06just being new to the country there was
- 00:12:07a lot of acclimating that was happening
- 00:12:10especially for
- 00:12:11a 13 year old and he just needed more
- 00:12:14time and we wanted more time also
- 00:12:17the location was pretty far from where
- 00:12:19we were and so we were commuting back
- 00:12:21and forth
- 00:12:2220 minutes and so
- 00:12:25or 30 minutes there and back so we ended
- 00:12:27up taking him out of one school and
- 00:12:29putting him into a different school that
- 00:12:31was sort of home school but also at a
- 00:12:35location
- 00:12:36and but yet we were still driving about
- 00:12:3830 minutes and so after all was said and
- 00:12:41done
- 00:12:42we decided to end up homeschooling him
- 00:12:46so that was that was kind of where we
- 00:12:48came from but it's not to say that that
- 00:12:50will be for everybody point being is
- 00:12:53that we decided we really liked
- 00:12:55homeschooling um
- 00:12:57in the situation we are because we're
- 00:13:00transient we're not a hundred percent
- 00:13:02sure we're going to stay in coronado uh
- 00:13:04it gives us the flexibility to
- 00:13:07try out different arenas and then move
- 00:13:10to a different place and then find the
- 00:13:12right fit so
- 00:13:15that's a lot and jackie probably didn't
- 00:13:17hear any of it
- 00:13:18[Laughter]
- 00:13:22so
- 00:13:23what's the price range of the schools in
- 00:13:27your area
- 00:13:28you may have already talked about that
- 00:13:30but i couldn't hear you so i don't know
- 00:13:32so right no i didn't the project so
- 00:13:36the i think the least expensive
- 00:13:38international school in panama is eighty
- 00:13:40dollars a month in vulcan
- 00:13:42and some of the international schools in
- 00:13:44panama city or you know seven eight
- 00:13:46hundred dollars a month plus you have to
- 00:13:48pay an entry fee on top of it so what
- 00:13:51did you find the prices like in the
- 00:13:53coronado area
- 00:13:54so i think first of all in the city
- 00:13:59there are a
- 00:14:00lot of very well established
- 00:14:04private schools
- 00:14:06the thing that you're gonna find in the
- 00:14:07city and and so we may actually end up
- 00:14:09moving closer to the city because
- 00:14:11there's just a lot more options for the
- 00:14:13kids with schooling and um but there are
- 00:14:16good schools here in coronado um yes
- 00:14:20jackie was saying about i think
- 00:14:22five to choose from it's just about
- 00:14:24finding the right fit um
- 00:14:27what we found on the high end
- 00:14:30you're going to be looking at paying
- 00:14:32about what was it 8 000 a year that's
- 00:14:35the high end there's a school in
- 00:14:37buenaventura that is a bit pricier and
- 00:14:40that's usually what you would find in
- 00:14:42the city
- 00:14:43the other schools i believe are probably
- 00:14:46about
- 00:14:47depending on
- 00:14:49i think how many kids you have three
- 00:14:51thousand to thirty five hundred dollars
- 00:14:54a year which is pretty affordable
- 00:14:57the homeschooling program that we're
- 00:14:59doing is also about about that much
- 00:15:02which by the way that program
- 00:15:04um international virtual learning
- 00:15:07academy and it's the same program that
- 00:15:10the school in buenaventura is using too
- 00:15:13and it has a full
- 00:15:14uh staff of teachers
- 00:15:16so you're not actually teaching it
- 00:15:18you're just keeping the kids on task
- 00:15:20so
- 00:15:21hope that answers some of that just to
- 00:15:23be clear
- 00:15:25it
- 00:15:27it wasn't the buena ventura school but
- 00:15:30that school uses the same program we now
- 00:15:32are using to homeschool
- 00:15:35our son so you could have the option of
- 00:15:37being in a location or home school with
- 00:15:41the same learning program
- 00:15:43yeah but the other schools there there
- 00:15:45is um there's a bunch of schools here
- 00:15:47and they're they're well established in
- 00:15:48coronado they have one of them has 250
- 00:15:51kids um you know why we chose not to is
- 00:15:55because we decided after being here for
- 00:15:56a little while we we like being
- 00:15:58transient and we like the flexibility of
- 00:16:01moving around and not having so much of
- 00:16:04a schedule so um i think until we find
- 00:16:07the right place that was the best option
- 00:16:09for us but if you're going to stay
- 00:16:11there's definitely options for schools
- 00:16:17so you may have already talked about
- 00:16:20this but because i can't hear you i
- 00:16:21don't know so i know you had your son in
- 00:16:24one school and for one reason or another
- 00:16:27that didn't work out and then you moved
- 00:16:29him to a different school
- 00:16:31and now you're homeschooling so um what
- 00:16:36were what were some of the things that
- 00:16:39didn't work out about the other schools
- 00:16:41that made you make the decision that
- 00:16:43homeschooling might be a better option
- 00:16:45for him at least right now
- 00:16:48well we did touch on this but um
- 00:16:51what what didn't work out for our son in
- 00:16:54particular which i think is important
- 00:16:56just to touch on was it was a big
- 00:17:00transition and emotionally
- 00:17:03after getting to the new country
- 00:17:06we signed him up for school right away
- 00:17:09it was like only a month and it was just
- 00:17:11too much it was a lot of work
- 00:17:14we didn't feel like we had the
- 00:17:16flexibility to enjoy living here because
- 00:17:19it was you know we had to be up in the
- 00:17:21morning and then there was school and
- 00:17:22then there was homework and then there
- 00:17:24was driving and so it kind of took away
- 00:17:26from us being able to enjoy just
- 00:17:29relaxing and you know all of life in
- 00:17:33panama and get used to living in a new
- 00:17:34country and then of course the stress of
- 00:17:37that on our son so we took him out
- 00:17:40um mostly because we just wanted a
- 00:17:43little bit more time to adjust
- 00:17:48so with most of the schools the schools
- 00:17:51that you checked out what grade range do
- 00:17:53they do or some of them only
- 00:17:56like you know kindergarten to fifth
- 00:17:58grade or some of them all the way to
- 00:18:0112th grade
- 00:18:03what's what's available in that area
- 00:18:07from what i've seen all of the schools
- 00:18:09pretty much seem to be
- 00:18:13pre-k through 12th grade so they on a
- 00:18:16lot of them uh will matriculate into the
- 00:18:19school system if and you know offer
- 00:18:22um the ability to go on to college
- 00:18:25so
- 00:18:26their they're doing i mean it's it's
- 00:18:29good stuff they're getting good
- 00:18:30education here so probably in a lot of
- 00:18:33ways better than the us
- 00:18:36so
- 00:18:37so um whenever when you did narrow it
- 00:18:41down to um maybe one or two schools did
- 00:18:44you go and interview the administrator
- 00:18:47to help you make your final decision on
- 00:18:49which one you were going to go to and
- 00:18:51then what's the process like and what
- 00:18:53paperwork do you need to bring to get
- 00:18:56your child enrolled in a school here in
- 00:18:58panama
- 00:19:00so um
- 00:19:02it's an interesting thing
- 00:19:04as mentioned when i first came out i
- 00:19:06didn't have the ability to do that
- 00:19:08because the schools were closed um it
- 00:19:10was still during quarantine and
- 00:19:11everything was
- 00:19:13um also virtual as well as when we first
- 00:19:15transitioned into moving here um they
- 00:19:18still weren't even in school they were
- 00:19:20online and they were still transitioning
- 00:19:22into maybe a two or three day a week
- 00:19:26so
- 00:19:27when we first came we were luckily able
- 00:19:30to sit down and do a tour
- 00:19:34and do an interview
- 00:19:35and decide whether it was a good fit and
- 00:19:38it was pretty easy we had some papers
- 00:19:41that we had to fill out
- 00:19:43um i thought that they needed
- 00:19:45transcripts from previous schools but it
- 00:19:47didn't seem to be necessary
- 00:19:50for us we just told them that we were
- 00:19:52interested they gave us some papers to
- 00:19:54fill out um we needed passports and
- 00:19:57identification do you remember what else
- 00:19:59we needed money my money
- 00:20:03so
- 00:20:05and coronado
- 00:20:06um besides you know what it costs per
- 00:20:09month and i don't know if you have to
- 00:20:10pay one or two months in advance did
- 00:20:12they have any kind of a sign up fee that
- 00:20:15you had to pay also on top of that
- 00:20:18yes
- 00:20:19and you don't get any of that back if
- 00:20:20you leave probably right
- 00:20:22no that sucks
- 00:20:24that's that's that's another thing so
- 00:20:26it's dependent on each kids have to wear
- 00:20:28a uniform at those schools or can they
- 00:20:30just wear civilian clothes
- 00:20:33there is ones there are okay one school
- 00:20:35in coronado i believe has a uniform
- 00:20:39um the schools the other schools were
- 00:20:41wear whatever you want some were more
- 00:20:44flexible than others i mean again it
- 00:20:46really depends on you as a parent and as
- 00:20:49a family what works best for your your
- 00:20:52desired learning style for your child
- 00:20:55um
- 00:20:56some people thought that some schools
- 00:20:57were too were too easy going um there is
- 00:21:00some schools that were a little bit more
- 00:21:03um
- 00:21:04rigorous with the educational side and
- 00:21:06so it just depends you have to pick and
- 00:21:09choose what works for you there are
- 00:21:10schools that do have a uniform i think a
- 00:21:14bunch of the schools in
- 00:21:17panama city do require uniforms and they
- 00:21:19have a little bit more structure
- 00:21:22but
- 00:21:23we haven't really checked that out so
- 00:21:27yeah so
- 00:21:29another question is um i know we've
- 00:21:31talked personally about it and i'm not
- 00:21:33going to go into details but
- 00:21:36um originally the house that you guys
- 00:21:38are in is just absolutely amazing and a
- 00:21:41beautiful pool and a beautiful ocean
- 00:21:43view and a really nice safe neighborhood
- 00:21:47and all of those things
- 00:21:50but are there other kids around in that
- 00:21:52neighborhood for your son to play with
- 00:21:55see that's part of the issue that we had
- 00:21:58was we didn't realize how isolated we
- 00:22:01would be we're in a beautiful house of
- 00:22:04maybe there's a community of maybe 15
- 00:22:06homes but they're weekend homes and for
- 00:22:09panamanian families that live in the
- 00:22:11city
- 00:22:12and so um
- 00:22:14the and the no kids and so here at least
- 00:22:17when you're in the beach community
- 00:22:19we found the best way to meet other kids
- 00:22:22is to the activities um the condos
- 00:22:26joining groups which we really didn't do
- 00:22:29a lot of right away and so that is
- 00:22:32essential if you have a child essential
- 00:22:35um and so
- 00:22:37we found it a bit isolating um and then
- 00:22:40really needed to do a lot of the extra
- 00:22:42work
- 00:22:43to
- 00:22:44go out and meet people but where
- 00:22:47you need to have common interests and
- 00:22:51and usually when people live in a
- 00:22:53community like the um the condos
- 00:22:56there's more children around and and i
- 00:22:58think that that if we were to do it over
- 00:23:01probably and live in the beach community
- 00:23:03would have decided to live in a condo
- 00:23:06first so
- 00:23:08yeah you know we have some tour guides
- 00:23:11ellen and steve bailey and when they
- 00:23:13they're kind of like you they were
- 00:23:14moving from alabama but they had always
- 00:23:17dreamed of living right on the beach
- 00:23:19with a beautiful ocean view so when they
- 00:23:22first moved to panama they moved to
- 00:23:24playa blanca
- 00:23:25and they had this amazing ocean view
- 00:23:28and you know the whole complex is
- 00:23:30beautiful the largest salt water pool in
- 00:23:32the world is everything was wonderful
- 00:23:36but their son was was not too happy um
- 00:23:39it was just his birthday i think his
- 00:23:41christmas eve and she was asking him
- 00:23:44well what do you want you know what do
- 00:23:45you want for your birthday and he was
- 00:23:47like i just want some friends mom i just
- 00:23:50need some friends
- 00:23:51and of course that broke her heart and
- 00:23:53she started crying and who did she call
- 00:23:56jackie
- 00:23:57christ is not happy what am i gonna do
- 00:24:00and i said you need to get him where
- 00:24:01there's a bunch of other kids
- 00:24:03um so you know i said maybe it's not
- 00:24:06going to be that ocean view that you've
- 00:24:08been wanting for but you know your son's
- 00:24:11only going to be a child for
- 00:24:13a certain amount of time and you need to
- 00:24:15make sure that they're happy because if
- 00:24:17they're not happy then you're not going
- 00:24:19to be happy yeah so
- 00:24:21um so they ended up moving to bocce and
- 00:24:24now
- 00:24:25their son is 18. i think he was 11 when
- 00:24:28he moved here and now he's 18. fluent in
- 00:24:30spanish walks around all of his friends
- 00:24:33or panamanians
- 00:24:34um if you didn't know it you wouldn't
- 00:24:36know he was from the united states
- 00:24:39because he he speaks his spanish is so
- 00:24:42good
- 00:24:42but
- 00:24:43having chil you know investigating where
- 00:24:46are the places where there's other kids
- 00:24:48that my kid and especially in the same
- 00:24:51age group because if you've got a
- 00:24:52six-year-old and all the other kids are
- 00:24:5417 then that's not a good mix either
- 00:24:57or vice versa so
- 00:25:00part of the thing when you're moving
- 00:25:02here with children is definitely
- 00:25:05besides the beautiful house and besides
- 00:25:07the ocean view and all those things that
- 00:25:09appeal so much to mom and dad
- 00:25:12if you've got children you really have
- 00:25:14to take into consideration is where are
- 00:25:16the other kids um are there any social
- 00:25:19activities for their kids you know if
- 00:25:21your kid played soccer in california is
- 00:25:24there soccer here if they were in
- 00:25:25gymnastics is there gymnastics here if
- 00:25:28they
- 00:25:28like to swim is there swimming pool
- 00:25:30close by for you know a public swimming
- 00:25:33pool that people can go in so
- 00:25:36um those are all some things that if
- 00:25:38you're moving here with children
- 00:25:40yes it might be your life dream to live
- 00:25:42where there's a beautiful ocean view but
- 00:25:44you've got to really
- 00:25:46take a hard look at what's available for
- 00:25:49your child for them to be happy and
- 00:25:51maybe even have a conversation with them
- 00:25:54as you know we're moving to this new
- 00:25:55country
- 00:25:56and
- 00:25:57people are going to speak a different
- 00:25:59language but there's going to be expats
- 00:26:01there that speak english also
- 00:26:03but um ask them
- 00:26:06kind of like i tell people when you're
- 00:26:07moving to panama make your list of the
- 00:26:09top five things of the top 10 10 things
- 00:26:13you must have in your life for you to be
- 00:26:15happy but ask your kids that same
- 00:26:17question what are some things you need
- 00:26:20in your life for you to be happy and
- 00:26:22maybe they want to be able to play
- 00:26:25baseball and that makes them happy or
- 00:26:27they want to go to a school where
- 00:26:29everybody speaks english and that makes
- 00:26:31them happy or maybe they want to be able
- 00:26:33to go see grandma
- 00:26:35twice a year and that will make them
- 00:26:37happy but um just like we as adults have
- 00:26:40to evaluate what's going to make us
- 00:26:42happy in this foreign country and find
- 00:26:44the place that has those things we have
- 00:26:46to um
- 00:26:47ask our children that question also and
- 00:26:50yes even if they're only seven or eight
- 00:26:52years old or 10 years old um it's going
- 00:26:55to affect them so you want them to be
- 00:26:57happy and if you ask them up front what
- 00:27:00would make you happy
- 00:27:02then you know then you have that list
- 00:27:04and maybe they hit it off maybe they
- 00:27:06they missed a few things on the list and
- 00:27:08they didn't know until they get to
- 00:27:10panama what really makes them happy
- 00:27:13but um they're probably have some ideas
- 00:27:16or or even where they're living right
- 00:27:18now what are the top five things that
- 00:27:20you love about living in the place where
- 00:27:22you are right now
- 00:27:24and can we transfer that into the place
- 00:27:27that you're moving to
- 00:27:29and if you can't then maybe you need to
- 00:27:30find a different place in panama so i
- 00:27:33know you guys are um
- 00:27:36have done some
- 00:27:37soul searching and evaluation and you've
- 00:27:40kind of made some decisions that if you
- 00:27:42had it to do all over again instead of
- 00:27:45moving where you are right now you would
- 00:27:48have maybe moved to a different location
- 00:27:50also so tell us what you think might
- 00:27:53would have been a better place for your
- 00:27:56whole family including your son my cat's
- 00:27:59trying to get in on the action here
- 00:28:02um well i think um
- 00:28:04it's an interesting thing i think that
- 00:28:06each family is different in what their
- 00:28:10as jackie was saying what works best for
- 00:28:12them um our son actually likes it here
- 00:28:16um he hasn't had a difficult time here
- 00:28:19um it's just been things that you learn
- 00:28:22as you go along in the journey that we
- 00:28:24decided okay maybe maybe we would like
- 00:28:26this a little better or maybe this is
- 00:28:28you know um more for us as as you know
- 00:28:32as a family what we do um where we are
- 00:28:36it's a big outdoorsy community you need
- 00:28:39to be hiking and surfing and outdoor and
- 00:28:42there's a lot of kids here actually
- 00:28:44there it's not that there aren't kids
- 00:28:45here there are um
- 00:28:47our son's not really a surfer he's not
- 00:28:49really a hiker he's a computer gamer kid
- 00:28:53and we kind of are used to living closer
- 00:28:55to the city where we were um and so that
- 00:28:58was what our lifestyle was and so i
- 00:29:01think that for us we probably would move
- 00:29:04closer to the city and that's where
- 00:29:07we're considering just because there
- 00:29:08there is those the soccer and the
- 00:29:11activities spiking and there's a lot
- 00:29:14more things that um i think that we'll
- 00:29:17find that
- 00:29:18are of interest to us too
- 00:29:21um
- 00:29:22but
- 00:29:22other than that i think that you know
- 00:29:25it's just up to the family to find what
- 00:29:27what a good fit is and i think with our
- 00:29:30situation we realize that this is
- 00:29:33learning curve um to to find the right
- 00:29:36place right away doesn't always happen i
- 00:29:38know a lot of families you know maybe
- 00:29:40they hit they hit the jackpot and they
- 00:29:42they land right away and it works out
- 00:29:45great for them um but i think that it's
- 00:29:48to be flexible um and and you you try it
- 00:29:51and if it doesn't work that's okay you
- 00:29:53know and then maybe we try something new
- 00:29:55uh maybe there's pedese or maybe there's
- 00:29:58boquete or maybe we try the city for a
- 00:30:00few months um i know the one thing that
- 00:30:03our son has gotten
- 00:30:05he's matured a lot wouldn't you say yeah
- 00:30:08absolutely
- 00:30:09for
- 00:30:10if you want to add in anything
- 00:30:12the microphone is right here and since
- 00:30:15no one could hear us i've been trying to
- 00:30:17just speak directly into them i think
- 00:30:19yeah i think the one thing to add is
- 00:30:22would i do it differently no i wouldn't
- 00:30:25do it differently
- 00:30:26now we're ongoing is wonderful and i'm
- 00:30:29happy for it
- 00:30:30but
- 00:30:31we as individual families spend a lot of
- 00:30:34time at home
- 00:30:35so
- 00:30:36our home was our sanctuary so we wanted
- 00:30:38a beautiful space where we could forget
- 00:30:40about the world and just be in our
- 00:30:42moments
- 00:30:43what we weren't able to do was then
- 00:30:45equally go out and find the individual
- 00:30:49so that was the hesitation but over the
- 00:30:52past year that we've been here the
- 00:30:54entire family has spent a lot of time at
- 00:30:56home so it's been a very
- 00:30:58calm relaxing time and now it's the next
- 00:31:01phase i think that that's part of it is
- 00:31:04that and our son's had a really um
- 00:31:07really easy year
- 00:31:09i mean he's enjoyed himself walking at
- 00:31:12the beach and um we have met people it's
- 00:31:15just i think we're just the types that
- 00:31:17we do work from home and we have our own
- 00:31:18schedule and you know um and so
- 00:31:22fitting in the way that we work with
- 00:31:24with life
- 00:31:25um in panama that's just been our you
- 00:31:29know our journey yeah for sure
- 00:31:31but it's been a good year and we we
- 00:31:34decided you know maybe that would work a
- 00:31:35little better and we want that so we're
- 00:31:37we're moving on to
- 00:31:39different
- 00:31:40different journeys
- 00:31:41while you can try as many new things as
- 00:31:43you can
- 00:31:44yeah so you know um i know one family
- 00:31:48that moved here and they were only here
- 00:31:50about a year and then they left um and
- 00:31:52they lived in a gated community with
- 00:31:55their daughter
- 00:31:56and um she could go to the gym
- 00:31:59there or she could walk around that
- 00:32:01gated community and there were maybe one
- 00:32:03or two other expat kids that lived in
- 00:32:05the gated community but she never ever
- 00:32:08had any actual inner
- 00:32:10interaction with panamanian kids ever
- 00:32:14she never went to soccer to watch
- 00:32:16pandomanians play she never went to
- 00:32:19you know the band practice to see the
- 00:32:21panamanians band practice so she never
- 00:32:24had enter any interaction
- 00:32:26and she really didn't get to enjoy
- 00:32:29this new culture and all these new
- 00:32:31people and and even have an opportunity
- 00:32:34to learn another language because she
- 00:32:35was only exposed to expat kids in
- 00:32:38english
- 00:32:40and um the couple i was telling you
- 00:32:42about ellen and steve and their son
- 00:32:45uh whenever they first lived in playa
- 00:32:47blanca there were no other kids he was
- 00:32:50the only kid on the weekends sometimes
- 00:32:53people would come in on the weekend just
- 00:32:55to spend the weekend because it's an
- 00:32:57all-inclusive resort but it wasn't until
- 00:33:00he moved to an area where there was a
- 00:33:02mix of panamanian kids expat kids
- 00:33:05um that he started meeting people
- 00:33:08started making friends they asked him to
- 00:33:11be in the band he's homeschooled but
- 00:33:12they asked him to be in the band anyway
- 00:33:15and to march in the parade whenever they
- 00:33:17had a parade
- 00:33:18so
- 00:33:19i think it's real important that
- 00:33:22as much as we want to protect our
- 00:33:24children and share shelter our children
- 00:33:26from any harm that can possibly happen
- 00:33:28to them we also have to let go a little
- 00:33:31bit um and let them
- 00:33:34visit with um even if they don't
- 00:33:36understand a word that that panamanian
- 00:33:39kid is saying let them hang out and you
- 00:33:41can be right there watching the whole
- 00:33:43thing but let them be exposed to the
- 00:33:46other culture let them be exposed to
- 00:33:48other language let them
- 00:33:50be
- 00:33:51around other people i don't know if you
- 00:33:53know but when i was a teenager i lived
- 00:33:55in germany for three years and my dad
- 00:33:59was in the military
- 00:34:01and there was no base housing so we had
- 00:34:03to live off base so it was me and my
- 00:34:06sister and we lived off space and we
- 00:34:07were the only two
- 00:34:09um blond-haired
- 00:34:11english-speaking children in the whole
- 00:34:13town so it didn't take very long of
- 00:34:16course we met all the other german kids
- 00:34:18and in like three months i was fluent in
- 00:34:21german of course i don't know any of it
- 00:34:23now because if you don't use it you lose
- 00:34:25it
- 00:34:26but um
- 00:34:27but and i'm not saying that you should
- 00:34:29move to a panamanian neighborhood but
- 00:34:31it's really good to get your children
- 00:34:34that's part of living in panama is being
- 00:34:36exposed to not just the beauty of this
- 00:34:38country and all the things it has to
- 00:34:40offer but the people and you can learn
- 00:34:43so much from the children and the people
- 00:34:45and the panamanian adults will take your
- 00:34:49kids in just like they're your own and
- 00:34:51love them just as much as you do and
- 00:34:54feed them you know if they're if they
- 00:34:56know that you're
- 00:34:57um not home for lunch they'll say well
- 00:34:59come on over here for lunch all in
- 00:35:01spanish of course but your kids pick up
- 00:35:04on what it is that they're talking about
- 00:35:06so
- 00:35:07it doesn't take very long for kids the
- 00:35:10younger they are the younger you are the
- 00:35:13easier it is to learn a new language i
- 00:35:15know that from personal experience the
- 00:35:17older you are the harder it is to learn
- 00:35:20a new language it can be done if you're
- 00:35:22willing to really really practice
- 00:35:24practice practice all the time but i'm
- 00:35:26busy you're busy and it's a little bit
- 00:35:29harder whenever you're older but um kids
- 00:35:32especially if they're under
- 00:35:34you know under 17 or 18 they can pick
- 00:35:37right up if they're exposed to it they
- 00:35:40can pick right up to in another language
- 00:35:43of spanish and it just makes them feel
- 00:35:45ten feet tall and so powerful like a
- 00:35:48superman or superwoman whenever they all
- 00:35:50of a sudden they can communicate in a
- 00:35:52completely different languages with
- 00:35:54someone it really empowers them i think
- 00:35:58not to do that
- 00:36:00yeah so
- 00:36:02i think that what are some other what
- 00:36:04are some other plans that you have for
- 00:36:06your son
- 00:36:07um to help him integrate with this new
- 00:36:10culture now that you're here
- 00:36:12and kind of figuring your way around to
- 00:36:14different things what are some other
- 00:36:16plans that you have
- 00:36:18yeah i was just jackie can't hear us
- 00:36:21i keep forgetting um but
- 00:36:24the the fascinating thing for us is i
- 00:36:26think that we have integrated more so
- 00:36:29with the panamanian culture than the
- 00:36:31expats
- 00:36:32that's that's just i don't know where
- 00:36:35we just found ourselves um really having
- 00:36:38more
- 00:36:39panamanian connections
- 00:36:41um friends with with
- 00:36:44people that were born here
- 00:36:46and our son also has had more to do with
- 00:36:49we do have
- 00:36:51a groundskeeper that's here and he
- 00:36:53brings his family and um and our son has
- 00:36:56gotten to know the the children and the
- 00:36:58family and um and so for us it's really
- 00:37:01been more about integrating directly
- 00:37:03with the culture
- 00:37:05um back to if people were going to move
- 00:37:07to this area
- 00:37:09i just wanted to touch base on if you
- 00:37:11did want to have a lot more
- 00:37:13children
- 00:37:15and expat families gorgona is a
- 00:37:19much younger
- 00:37:20area i think you're going to find that
- 00:37:22there are a lot of kids um and things
- 00:37:25going on in gorgona and there's actually
- 00:37:27a lot of local culture there too
- 00:37:30so um
- 00:37:31just adding that in for us we really
- 00:37:34actually like to integrate um into a
- 00:37:38place that maybe
- 00:37:39um isn't all expats we liked the idea of
- 00:37:43having
- 00:37:44um
- 00:37:45the experience and the integration with
- 00:37:47the panamanian culture that's been my
- 00:37:49favorite part and i think our sons too
- 00:37:52yeah
- 00:37:52i think the only thing i'll add is
- 00:37:56our son myself we spoke zero spanish
- 00:37:59coming here
- 00:38:01and he still doesn't speak much spanish
- 00:38:03because we don't do a tremendous amount
- 00:38:05of integrating
- 00:38:06he has picked up words but in the very
- 00:38:09beginning it felt overwhelming for him
- 00:38:12so i was able to give him certain words
- 00:38:15that made him feel empowered
- 00:38:17certain phrases to know that if there
- 00:38:20was ever a need he knew something like i
- 00:38:23don't understand
- 00:38:24i need help or whatever it may be and
- 00:38:27that was very useful for him
- 00:38:29to have at least those as he began to
- 00:38:32pick up the language more and more
- 00:38:35oh the other the last thing is safety
- 00:38:37um because jackie mentioned it um i i
- 00:38:41feel absolutely safe in this country we
- 00:38:44we leave our son by himself all the time
- 00:38:47we feel he's totally fine it's i've
- 00:38:49never felt unsafe here at all um
- 00:38:53you know it's
- 00:38:55it's it's fine you know so in regards to
- 00:38:58being isolated in a gated community i
- 00:39:00don't think that's necessary i think
- 00:39:02that um
- 00:39:03i think that the culture in the country
- 00:39:05is
- 00:39:06um definitely a place where
- 00:39:09you could feel safe with your children
- 00:39:11so
- 00:39:18so one other because i can't hear you i
- 00:39:21think you've stopped talking right okay
- 00:39:23so
- 00:39:24um
- 00:39:26what about um are there any organized
- 00:39:29social activities or the with a church
- 00:39:31or other expats or panamanians um how
- 00:39:35would you if someone was going to move
- 00:39:37here with their children besides just
- 00:39:39getting on all the facebook groups and
- 00:39:41asking other people you know is there
- 00:39:43any roller skating here or is there any
- 00:39:45gymnastics here or is there baseball
- 00:39:48here
- 00:39:48um how do you how can you find out
- 00:39:51what social activities might be
- 00:39:53available for
- 00:39:55your child or whenever you're moving
- 00:39:58here that are in their age group and how
- 00:40:00can they get involved in it how do you
- 00:40:02find out about that
- 00:40:04so
- 00:40:05some of that is through the schools
- 00:40:07i think that when if you enroll your
- 00:40:09children in schools you're going to just
- 00:40:12through word of mouth you're going to
- 00:40:13meet people you're going to hear about
- 00:40:14things going on
- 00:40:15um and
- 00:40:17the other part is um there are groups uh
- 00:40:20church groups um
- 00:40:23you know if you're active in that there
- 00:40:25there's like youth groups for kids all
- 00:40:28kinds of stuff there if you're if your
- 00:40:30kids into activities
- 00:40:32there are facebook groups mostly people
- 00:40:34post on the facebook groups i think
- 00:40:36there are moms groups and homeschooling
- 00:40:39groups and you just search through
- 00:40:41facebook and there's a group for just
- 00:40:43about everything um and then when you
- 00:40:45meet people you just talk and you just
- 00:40:47ask and people share um it's a very word
- 00:40:50of mouth type of community and then you
- 00:40:52hear you meet people and then people
- 00:40:53invite you to places um and so i think
- 00:40:56just get out
- 00:40:57get out join groups um
- 00:41:00and then just begin to socialize that
- 00:41:02way
- 00:41:04okay
- 00:41:06so um if anybody has any question for
- 00:41:09janine and carl if you would please post
- 00:41:12it in our chat room and put three
- 00:41:14question marks in front of it so i can
- 00:41:16easily spot it but while we're waiting
- 00:41:19for the questions to come in um what
- 00:41:21advice would you have for other parents
- 00:41:24that are thinking about moving to panama
- 00:41:26with their children
- 00:41:29you want to start
- 00:41:33i think um
- 00:41:35i think you said it the the first piece
- 00:41:37of advice would be to
- 00:41:40give yourself permission to have a
- 00:41:42little bit of time
- 00:41:43before you start to re-integrate into
- 00:41:46your daily life right you don't know
- 00:41:48what you're going to have to deal with
- 00:41:51or do or or move forward with
- 00:41:53so if you give yourself a little bit of
- 00:41:55time i was starting to feel
- 00:41:58rushed on time because i didn't want my
- 00:42:00son to miss anything in school but
- 00:42:02looking back i could have easily given
- 00:42:04them two more months let everyone settle
- 00:42:06in
- 00:42:07and then have a really positive
- 00:42:10experience
- 00:42:12we with our son did not have a positive
- 00:42:15positive experience in the very first
- 00:42:17interaction so for him
- 00:42:19it was then overcoming that feeling so
- 00:42:21if you have a little bit of patience i
- 00:42:23think that's a really good start for you
- 00:42:26yeah i think um
- 00:42:28i guess the word would be flexibility
- 00:42:30being flexible especially with children
- 00:42:33especially with like
- 00:42:34you know um
- 00:42:36lots of things change here uh i think
- 00:42:38being in panama
- 00:42:40one of the things is is just to be open
- 00:42:43to you know one day you have electricity
- 00:42:45one day you don't one day you can you
- 00:42:48know we do these virtual things and we
- 00:42:50can't hear on the microphone there
- 00:42:53there's just a lot of things and you
- 00:42:54just kind of learn to just go with the
- 00:42:56flow
- 00:42:57and so with children i think being
- 00:42:59flexible um also in their integration in
- 00:43:02their process and our son is a little
- 00:43:05bit more shy in certain ways with
- 00:43:07meeting kids and so we weren't very
- 00:43:08pushy with that we we let him just kind
- 00:43:11of feel into
- 00:43:12the environment and and do it his way
- 00:43:15and if something didn't work out okay
- 00:43:16you know um he's still young and
- 00:43:19learning and so
- 00:43:20um i think the flexibility for us was
- 00:43:23really where it was at and and um
- 00:43:26why the homeschooling was a good idea
- 00:43:28for us with just figuring out where we
- 00:43:30wanted to land our feet uh was because
- 00:43:33it was less on him to be going in and
- 00:43:36out of different schools um
- 00:43:38so we just thought okay you know once we
- 00:43:41figure it out then
- 00:43:43then then we can
- 00:43:45integrate him more into something that's
- 00:43:47a little bit more stable if at all
- 00:43:49because this for us is an experience and
- 00:43:51who knows if we'll stay forever or a few
- 00:43:53years
- 00:43:54or
- 00:43:55who knows so
- 00:44:00yeah so someone a couple of different
- 00:44:03questions you should know that in panama
- 00:44:05that
- 00:44:06the school year in panama if you're
- 00:44:08going to a public school starts like the
- 00:44:11end of february the first part of march
- 00:44:13and you usually have like december
- 00:44:15january february is their summer
- 00:44:18vacation but if you're going to an
- 00:44:20international school
- 00:44:22if it's a french international school
- 00:44:24they go by the french schedule if you're
- 00:44:27going to
- 00:44:29school some go by the american schedule
- 00:44:32where the summer is a completely
- 00:44:34different time
- 00:44:35so and the schools that your son went to
- 00:44:38what kind of schedule then
- 00:44:40how long was the school year or what was
- 00:44:42their schedule when did it start when
- 00:44:44did it end and was it possible to enroll
- 00:44:46your son in the middle of the year of
- 00:44:49their school year
- 00:44:51so um
- 00:44:53all of the schools that we
- 00:44:55um
- 00:44:57were looking at were based on
- 00:45:00the american
- 00:45:01educational system and so they started
- 00:45:04school
- 00:45:05based on the same time
- 00:45:07schedule
- 00:45:09as the u.s
- 00:45:12i don't know i know that as jackie was
- 00:45:14saying there are other schools that
- 00:45:17are based in you know french and i have
- 00:45:20no idea i didn't look at those um
- 00:45:23most of them had open enrollment
- 00:45:26although i will say that sometimes they
- 00:45:28could get pushy and say oh
- 00:45:31if you enroll by this time we have x
- 00:45:33amount of kids and we only have this
- 00:45:35amount of spots i would say be weary of
- 00:45:38that they will always take your
- 00:45:39enrollment
- 00:45:41so if you need a little bit more time
- 00:45:43take it i wouldn't be pressured into
- 00:45:45that
- 00:45:46but um they do most of them have an open
- 00:45:49enrollment um and again some will say
- 00:45:51that they have only a few spots for
- 00:45:53different grades
- 00:45:54but i i don't buy that so um
- 00:45:58but yeah i think that because they have
- 00:46:00open enrollment there's also the
- 00:46:02flexibility to take a little bit of time
- 00:46:04if you want to transition with
- 00:46:06homeschooling and then decide later but
- 00:46:08just realize that if you enroll your
- 00:46:12child into a school they have an
- 00:46:15enrollment fee and if you decide that's
- 00:46:17not the school of choice for your child
- 00:46:19or children you're not going to get that
- 00:46:21back
- 00:46:22so even if even if it was
- 00:46:24a month or two they're going to keep it
- 00:46:26even if it was a week yeah
- 00:46:28so
- 00:46:29just just another question that came up
- 00:46:32is when as what documentation is needed
- 00:46:34to enroll your
- 00:46:36your child into school and also do you
- 00:46:39need vaccine records
- 00:46:42um
- 00:46:42no you do not need vaccine records um
- 00:46:47we didn't like hand any of that stuff in
- 00:46:50so i don't remember
- 00:46:52i don't remember specifically it says on
- 00:46:56it says on the website now again these
- 00:46:57are the ones in coronado i can't speak
- 00:47:00for the established schools in the city
- 00:47:02because some of those have been around a
- 00:47:04long time and they may have a different
- 00:47:06protocol the ones that we went through
- 00:47:09they really just wanted you they had
- 00:47:11certain paperwork through the school
- 00:47:14certain
- 00:47:15stuff that we had to answer questions
- 00:47:17forums
- 00:47:18um and then other than that we just
- 00:47:20showed up
- 00:47:21so
- 00:47:22you know you need identification
- 00:47:24so you'll always need a passport until
- 00:47:26you have something like here is upset
- 00:47:28that he you're getting more attention
- 00:47:30than he is he's doing everything he can
- 00:47:32to try to get my attention to pet him or
- 00:47:34do something and quit talking to you and
- 00:47:36i see your dog in the background is
- 00:47:39just uh really
- 00:47:41relaxing and enjoying it's a whole new
- 00:47:43way of communicating these days we have
- 00:47:46our pets involved in everything we do
- 00:47:49um well we're not talking about um
- 00:47:53pets
- 00:47:54probably the thing that had the most joy
- 00:47:57moving here was our animals so if you
- 00:47:58have animals
- 00:48:00our animals are so
- 00:48:02happy here
- 00:48:04yeah they're actually
- 00:48:05happiest
- 00:48:07so
- 00:48:08so someone says show the cat i'm gonna
- 00:48:10show him in just a little bit when he
- 00:48:12comes back over here he's giving up on
- 00:48:13me uh giving him all the attention so
- 00:48:17when you're coming as a family here's a
- 00:48:19good question
- 00:48:21um when you're coming as a family what
- 00:48:24kind of a visa and now you got in just
- 00:48:27in the nick of a time before they
- 00:48:29changed the friendly nation visa right
- 00:48:32so you probably got the old friendly
- 00:48:34nation visa
- 00:48:35yeah which um
- 00:48:37it's sort of available still with some
- 00:48:40other rules and things so if you guys go
- 00:48:42to my website
- 00:48:44panamarelocationtours.com and in the
- 00:48:46upper right hand corner
- 00:48:48um in the search bar um just type in
- 00:48:51five thousand dollars and then you can
- 00:48:53read about another way to get a friendly
- 00:48:56nation visa the new way
- 00:48:58without having to buy two or three
- 00:49:00hundred thousand dollars worth of real
- 00:49:02estate
- 00:49:05so good question what inspired you to
- 00:49:07leave southern california and why panama
- 00:49:10as opposed to other locations
- 00:49:14well while you're doing that i'm going
- 00:49:16to get buster
- 00:49:18um i personally
- 00:49:21love southern california
- 00:49:23i will probably at some point find my
- 00:49:25way back we will probably at some point
- 00:49:31but um we
- 00:49:33it was just getting a little bit crazy
- 00:49:35the cost of living there is insane
- 00:49:38um
- 00:49:39i think that that speaks for itself
- 00:49:42uh and and so we wanted an adventure we
- 00:49:46wanted an experience we really came here
- 00:49:48with the idea of nothing is permanent we
- 00:49:50just wanted to try something new uh
- 00:49:53after being quarantined and locked down
- 00:49:55for so long we wanted to travel
- 00:49:58um and so we thought behind you he wants
- 00:50:01in on the action here
- 00:50:03[Laughter]
- 00:50:07and so we thought
- 00:50:09that
- 00:50:11at first we thought costa rica
- 00:50:13and
- 00:50:15we looked into i'm a type one diabetic
- 00:50:18and so i had very specific needs for
- 00:50:21medication and so when i looked at costa
- 00:50:24rica i realized uh one of their criteria
- 00:50:26was that it was
- 00:50:28illegal to bring certain medications
- 00:50:30into the country and one of which was
- 00:50:33insulin
- 00:50:34and so i couldn't get my medicine in
- 00:50:36costa rica so that was done that was a
- 00:50:39done-for-deal so um then i started
- 00:50:41looking at panama and i saw okay this is
- 00:50:44a possibility um having never been to
- 00:50:47the country
- 00:50:48so
- 00:50:49yeah yeah i i didn't i still haven't
- 00:50:52made the choice to move to panama i
- 00:50:54don't know where i am right now
- 00:50:56um
- 00:50:57it was really just an inspired move out
- 00:50:59of nowhere just something is saying look
- 00:51:01you know what we've done this place what
- 00:51:03where else can we explore for a while
- 00:51:05and if you understand anything about the
- 00:51:07work we do or if you just vibe with this
- 00:51:10as well sometimes the message is loud
- 00:51:13enough and it makes no sense and you
- 00:51:14follow it anyway this is what we did
- 00:51:17yeah and it's worked out fine i think
- 00:51:19that
- 00:51:21i think that it's a very peaceful life
- 00:51:23here for sure i think that um
- 00:51:26you know it's it's really doable it's we
- 00:51:29haven't come across many challenges
- 00:51:31living here at all even during the
- 00:51:33recent protests i still got my
- 00:51:36medication through fastbacks delivery
- 00:51:39so
- 00:51:40yeah
- 00:51:41however saying that um i have grown
- 00:51:44tremendously in the past year our entire
- 00:51:46family has grown tremendously literally
- 00:51:49and metaphorically our son was about a
- 00:51:51foot shorter when we first moved to this
- 00:51:53country as soon as we moved here he grew
- 00:51:57and he's almost as tall as carl so
- 00:52:00four foot three
- 00:52:04yeah you know whenever um whenever i was
- 00:52:07looking to move overseas um we'd had
- 00:52:10this summer in texas where for 90 days
- 00:52:13straight it never got below 100 degrees
- 00:52:15even at 2 o'clock in the morning it's
- 00:52:16like 105. daytime temperatures were 109.
- 00:52:20i said i don't want to live like this
- 00:52:22anymore i wanted to live someplace where
- 00:52:24i'd never need an air conditioner or
- 00:52:26heater again so i spent a lot of time
- 00:52:29looking at a lot of different countries
- 00:52:31and
- 00:52:32um
- 00:52:33and my number one criteria was no air
- 00:52:36conditioner you know to have a beautiful
- 00:52:38view was a big big plus
- 00:52:40but um as i started visiting some of the
- 00:52:43other countries you know i visited
- 00:52:44mexico of course and there was all this
- 00:52:47talk oh the cartel cut off those
- 00:52:49people's head and the cartel did this
- 00:52:51and
- 00:52:52that made me a little bit nervous
- 00:52:54and then um i went to uruguay because
- 00:52:56i'd heard some great things about that
- 00:52:59and when i was there there were actually
- 00:53:01signs of that said americans go home
- 00:53:04it was like well maybe that's not a very
- 00:53:06mark that went off the list and then
- 00:53:08argentina it seems like they have one
- 00:53:11economic collapse after another they're
- 00:53:13in the middle of another one right now
- 00:53:15also so
- 00:53:16you have to it's not just how affordable
- 00:53:19is the country what's the health care
- 00:53:21like in the country how pretty is it how
- 00:53:25far is it from the united states you
- 00:53:26have to look at the big picture
- 00:53:28of how friendly are the people how much
- 00:53:31crime is there is there cartel activity
- 00:53:35um
- 00:53:36those are all important things but also
- 00:53:38the stability of the government i even i
- 00:53:41never went there but i considered
- 00:53:43nicaragua because i heard good things
- 00:53:45about it but
- 00:53:46there's no way i would live in nicaragua
- 00:53:49or like venezuela would you want to move
- 00:53:52there i don't think so it's a beautiful
- 00:53:54country it's an abs and you can live
- 00:53:56there cheap
- 00:53:58but the crime and the government and all
- 00:54:00those other things so you have to look
- 00:54:02at the big picture of safety
- 00:54:05and the government stability
- 00:54:08the food supply where do they get their
- 00:54:09food from you if you live on an island
- 00:54:11everything is shipped in well what if
- 00:54:13there's a hurricane or bad storms for
- 00:54:15two weeks no food comes in so what all
- 00:54:18can they grow in the country that's a
- 00:54:20big plus for panama because they can
- 00:54:22grow so much food right here
- 00:54:24that we don't have to ship in a lot of
- 00:54:26food everything is grown right here but
- 00:54:29safety especially if you're moving with
- 00:54:31children even if you're not moving with
- 00:54:33children but safety should be way at the
- 00:54:35top of your list of things to consider
- 00:54:38and you just don't hear about
- 00:54:41it's extremely rare
- 00:54:43that someone gets kidnapped here it's
- 00:54:45extremely rare that
- 00:54:48they're targeting expats for anything
- 00:54:50here so panama's a really really safe
- 00:54:53country when you take a look at the big
- 00:54:56picture of some of the other countries
- 00:54:58that are out there and when you add in
- 00:55:00you know the affordable health care
- 00:55:02affordable housing
- 00:55:04beautiful weather no hurricanes
- 00:55:07um all those things that just really
- 00:55:10it's my panama's consistently ranked at
- 00:55:12the top it's why i live here that's
- 00:55:15probably why you live here also
- 00:55:18yeah so i want to thank you janine and
- 00:55:21carl so much for sharing your
- 00:55:23information about
- 00:55:25moving to panama with your son
- 00:55:27and you know sometimes it takes a little
- 00:55:29while to get um all the kinks out
- 00:55:33and like moving anywhere if you were
- 00:55:35just to move to northern california
- 00:55:37instead of southern california there
- 00:55:38would be a transition time to get them
- 00:55:41comfortable if you would have moved to
- 00:55:42texas it's like learning a different
- 00:55:44language if you're from southern
- 00:55:46california with that texas twang which
- 00:55:49i'm losing a little bit since i've been
- 00:55:51here so long so no matter where you move
- 00:55:53to
- 00:55:54um especially with children there's
- 00:55:56going to be a transition time you can't
- 00:55:58expect that things is like okay we moved
- 00:56:00here in august by september everything's
- 00:56:04going to be great it doesn't work that
- 00:56:06way it takes time and sometimes you have
- 00:56:08to do some course corrections you go to
- 00:56:10a different school you find a different
- 00:56:12house
- 00:56:13you know you think this is the best
- 00:56:15grocery store then all of a sudden you
- 00:56:16discover another one that's so much
- 00:56:18better with better prices so no matter
- 00:56:21where you move to in panama or anywhere
- 00:56:24else in the world it just takes time for
- 00:56:27you and for your children to adjust to
- 00:56:30the changes
- 00:56:31but if you all work together and if you
- 00:56:34have little family powwows every once in
- 00:56:36a while to talk about what's working
- 00:56:38what's not working
- 00:56:40and if it's not working then what can
- 00:56:42you do to make it better if you do those
- 00:56:45things as a family together then the
- 00:56:47family is going to continue to grow
- 00:56:49together and
- 00:56:51find the right path to happiness for
- 00:56:53everybody so once again thank you so
- 00:56:55much for joining us janine and carl
- 00:56:58and thank you to all the people that
- 00:57:00were our guests on the live stream today
- 00:57:02i've got this crazy fly that's after me
- 00:57:04now
- 00:57:05so thanks again everybody have a good
- 00:57:07evening
- 00:57:08bye thank you
