She mentions the diversity of the audience and shares her own relocation story, having moved to Panama in 2010 and starting a successful relocation tour business. Jackie highlights the complexities of relocating with families and pets and briefly introduces guests Janine and Carl, who moved to Panama with their son.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:10:00

The conversation turns to Janine and Carl, who start having technical issues but eventually join the live stream to share their experience. They discuss moving from Southern California to the Coronado area in Panama. They prioritize the proximity to beaches and schools as important factors in their decision to relocate. Despite technical challenges, they communicate their transitional journey of moving to a new country and school system with their son.

  • 00:10:00 - 00:15:00

Janine and Carl elaborate on their move, detailing how they decided upon Panama without having visited before. They express that their son's well-being was a significant consideration, managing the transition from a familiar environment in California to a new, uncharted life in Panama. Overcoming communication hurdles, they explore their rationale for choosing international schools over public or homeschooling options, emphasizing business commitments.

  • 00:15:00 - 00:20:00

The couple explores the logistics of selecting international schools amidst pandemic restrictions when schools were initially closed for in-person visits. They navigate early decisions, including enrolling in an international school and later moving to home-schooling as a more flexible option. The discussion highlights the evolving fit of educational choices for their son amidst their transient lifestyle in Panama.

  • 00:20:00 - 00:25:00

The conversation shifts to the costs of education, outlining the price range of international schools in Panama, which can vary greatly based on location—ranging from $80 to $700 monthly. Key differences in school structures are noted, along with diverse teaching styles, and the potential for additional enrollment fees.

  • 00:25:00 - 00:30:00

Janine and Carl elaborate on their decision to eventually choose homeschooling, citing flexibility and the opportunity to avoid unnecessary commuting as priorities. They emphasize that while international schools in their area offer high-quality education, personal preferences for transient living and recreational flexibility led them to homeschooling.

  • 00:30:00 - 00:35:00

Jackie interjects to share insights into the importance of children's integration into new environments. She underscores this with anecdotes about other families who modified living arrangements to better suit their children's social needs. Jackie stresses the need to balance parental desires with children’s happiness to ensure a smooth transition when moving abroad.

  • 00:35:00 - 00:40:00

Further discussion on social integration covers considerations around exposing children to diverse cultural environments and languages. Jackie and the guests highlight how involvement with local Panamanians and expats can enhance the living experience. They reinforce the value in allowing children the chance to engage with local cultures for personal growth.

  • 00:40:00 - 00:45:00

Returning to practical relocation advice, Jackie and the guests discuss what documentation is essential for school enrollment in Panama. They cover flexibility in enrollment times, vaccine records (not generally required), and basic identification needs for integrating into the school system.

  • 00:45:00 - 00:50:00

The conversation includes personal lessons learned and advice for potential movers, such as the merits of flexibility, not rushing school enrollments, and the benefits of gradual cultural and social integration.

  • 00:50:00 - 00:57:13

The session concludes with a Q&A, touching upon administrative details about visas and the logistics of moving from California. • 00:00:41
uh bocce panama hi debbie she's here

  • 00:00:45
and uh so let us know where you're from
  • 00:00:48
it's just interesting for us to know
  • 00:00:50
where people are that are thinking about
  • 00:00:52
moving to panama you know it changes
  • 00:00:54
from year to year so just a little bit
  • 00:00:57
of background about who i am
  • 00:00:59
and kind of my relocation tours my name
  • 00:01:01
is jackie lang and i moved to panama in
  • 00:01:04
    2010
  • 00:01:05
and shortly after that some of my
  • 00:01:07
friends were saying hey i've been kind
  • 00:01:09
of thinking about moving to panama and
  • 00:01:11
they asked me to do a little tour for
  • 00:01:13
them and i did for eight people
  • 00:01:16
and then i started getting other calls
  • 00:01:18
from people interested in a tour so
  • 00:01:21
that's how panama relocation tours was
  • 00:01:23
born i had no plans to move down to
  • 00:01:26
panama and start a tour business i've
  • 00:01:28
been a real estate investor for 25 years
  • 00:01:30
when i moved here so a tour business
  • 00:01:34
wasn't something that i'd done before
  • 00:01:36
but it's obviously working out pretty
  • 00:01:38
well we just finished tour number 179
  • 00:01:42
and if you look on our trip advisor for
  • 00:01:44
panama relocation tours you'll see that
  • 00:01:47
we got a lot of great reviews
  • 00:01:49
about that tour also on facebook we have
  • 00:01:51
a lot of great reviews on facebook also
  • 00:01:55
    um so
  • 00:01:56
it's a big decision to move to panama
  • 00:01:59
whether you're moving with children or
  • 00:02:00
not moving with children moving with
  • 00:02:02
pets or not moving to pets but the more
  • 00:02:05
elements that are involved in the move
  • 00:02:07
where it's just one person moving it's
  • 00:02:09
easy enough to make the move when
  • 00:02:11
    there's two people
  • 00:02:12
then you have to they both have to
  • 00:02:14
mutually decide is this something i want
  • 00:02:16
to do and then when you have children
  • 00:02:19
into it or pets into it there's just
  • 00:02:21
more moving parts that are necessary to
  • 00:02:25
be able to make the move so i've invited
  • 00:02:28
    janine and carl
  • 00:02:30
to join us because they moved to panama
  • 00:02:33
    with their son
  • 00:02:35
    i think it's a little bit more than a
  • 00:02:36
year ago they moved to panama with her
  • 00:02:39
son they're working on getting a
  • 00:02:40
    microphone set up
  • 00:02:42
let me see if they're ready
  • 00:02:45
with their microphone put a thumbs up if
  • 00:02:47
you're ready with a with your microphone
  • 00:02:51
    janine
  • 00:02:53
okay we'll give it a try
  • 00:02:56
okay this is janine and carl hi
  • 00:03:00
thanks for joining us did you get a
  • 00:03:02
    microphone set up
  • 00:03:05
it did is it working yeah we can't hear
  • 00:03:07
    you
  • 00:03:08
i'm gonna i'm gonna take you off screen
  • 00:03:10
and i'll come back in just a little bit
  • 00:03:12
whenever we give it another try so talk
  • 00:03:14
it in the microphone and see if that
  • 00:03:15
works so the microphone is working on
  • 00:03:18
    our end
  • 00:03:19
    and you still go here
  • 00:03:24
    i don't know
  • 00:03:26
i'll be right back i'll be right back so
  • 00:03:29
i'm going to take them off screen while
  • 00:03:30
they're working on that you know
  • 00:03:33
for me especially you know when i first
  • 00:03:35
started doing these live streams i am so
  • 00:03:38
    technically challenged you wouldn't
  • 00:03:40
    believe it
  • 00:03:41
but i couldn't figure out because my
  • 00:03:44
screen was just really really dark all
  • 00:03:46
the time and i bought more lights and i
  • 00:03:48
bought more lights and i still had a
  • 00:03:49
really dark screen and then i had
  • 00:03:52
someone come over and see if he could
  • 00:03:53
figure it out and he said oh it's the
  • 00:03:54
camera on your computer you can't your
  • 00:03:57
camera is not good enough for a live
  • 00:03:58
    stream so i bought a little 39
  • 00:04:01
camera for my these live streams and it
  • 00:04:04
seemed to solve the problem um i still
  • 00:04:06
have some lighting not very much
  • 00:04:08
um but you know just one little thing
  • 00:04:11
    but
  • 00:04:12
a lot of us that um
  • 00:04:15
live here in panama we don't do live
  • 00:04:18
streams we don't do conference calls we
  • 00:04:20
don't do those kind of things and so
  • 00:04:22
it's a learning curve to learn how to do
  • 00:04:25
uh these live streams and the conference
  • 00:04:27
calls and everything else so while we're
  • 00:04:29
    waiting on
  • 00:04:31
um janine and carl who are going to be
  • 00:04:33
with us in just a little bit um can
  • 00:04:35
everybody hear me okay can you hear me
  • 00:04:37
okay let me know in the chat room if you
  • 00:04:40
    can hear me
  • 00:04:43
okay so john said that he could hear
  • 00:04:45
them but it was very low so let's go try
  • 00:04:47
    it again
  • 00:04:49
so janine and carl can let's see if we
  • 00:04:52
can hear you now say something well we
  • 00:04:54
have our mic set up can you hear me
  • 00:04:56
well because i can't hear them
  • 00:05:00
    i don't know because everything doesn't
  • 00:05:02
hear you yeah they can hear you okay
  • 00:05:07
even if i can't hear what you're saying
  • 00:05:09
they can hear what you're saying somehow
  • 00:05:11
rather in this uh cyber world i don't
  • 00:05:14
know how things work so i'm gonna ask
  • 00:05:17
jackie to turn up her volume
  • 00:05:20
even though i can't hear a word that
  • 00:05:21
you're saying so long as the audience
  • 00:05:23
can hear that's all that really matters
  • 00:05:26
so first of all let's start out with
  • 00:05:28
when did you move to panama and where
  • 00:05:31
    did you move in panama
  • 00:05:33
um so it's been let's see
  • 00:05:36
    a little over
  • 00:05:37
    a year
  • 00:05:38
uh we're in coronado area so we moved
  • 00:05:42
    here
  • 00:05:43
    um
  • 00:05:45
    we
  • 00:05:45
we kind of decided we'd never been to
  • 00:05:47
panama and we kind of just decided well
  • 00:05:49
let's just let's just try it out and we
  • 00:05:52
came here first i came here first during
  • 00:05:54
    the pandemic
  • 00:05:55
and researched a whole bunch of
  • 00:05:56
    locations and came here specifically
  • 00:05:59
because we thought it would work out
  • 00:06:00
being close enough proximity to the city
  • 00:06:03
giving us that flexibility of being able
  • 00:06:05
to go to the beach and then of course
  • 00:06:07
    coronado had schools
  • 00:06:09
so we thought maybe that would be good
  • 00:06:11
for our third now thirteen-year-old son
  • 00:06:16
so maybe someone mentioned to jackie to
  • 00:06:18
    turn up her volume
  • 00:06:20
or to say it differently to check the
  • 00:06:23
speaker okay i have your volume turned
  • 00:06:26
up all the way as high as it will go i
  • 00:06:29
    have your volume turned up
  • 00:06:31
    um
  • 00:06:32
    if someone could type
  • 00:06:34
i can't hear you but you know it doesn't
  • 00:06:36
matter if i can hear you what matters is
  • 00:06:38
that they can hear you that's all that
  • 00:06:39
really matters so they can hear you and
  • 00:06:42
that's good so when you moved to panama
  • 00:06:45
you moved here with your son and how did
  • 00:06:49
you break the news to him that hey we're
  • 00:06:51
going to move to another country oh what
  • 00:06:53
do you have to say about that you know i
  • 00:06:56
    i don't really remember
  • 00:06:59
what he had to say about it um i think
  • 00:07:02
he really misses where we used to live
  • 00:07:04
we came from southern california and
  • 00:07:07
he had gone to the same school his whole
  • 00:07:09
life pretty much and he really missed
  • 00:07:11
his friends he still does but virtually
  • 00:07:14
everything kind of worked out because he
  • 00:07:16
could still keep in touch with them
  • 00:07:17
    online
  • 00:07:18
so our son he seems pretty he's he's
  • 00:07:22
    pretty adjusted he likes it
  • 00:07:24
    he misses home
  • 00:07:26
this isn't home to him yet but i think
  • 00:07:29
    that's pretty normal
  • 00:07:31
okay so um someone said to turn your um
  • 00:07:35
i i made some edits to your sound to
  • 00:07:38
turn down any echoes that might happen
  • 00:07:40
so if anybody still hears an echo on
  • 00:07:43
janine and carl's microphone then let me
  • 00:07:45
know because once again i can't hear
  • 00:07:47
what they're saying but i'm glad that
  • 00:07:48
you can hear what they're saying so
  • 00:07:50
    hopefully that's better
  • 00:07:52
    so
  • 00:07:52
    um
  • 00:07:54
i know you you uh whenever you move to
  • 00:07:56
panama if i remember right you you
  • 00:07:58
didn't come on a panama relocation tour
  • 00:08:00
but you bought our complete panama
  • 00:08:02
relocation guide and then you went on a
  • 00:08:05
private tour did you both go on the
  • 00:08:07
private tour or was it just you jeanine
  • 00:08:10
i think just you went yeah um and you
  • 00:08:12
knew that you wanted to live somewhere
  • 00:08:15
in the coronado area because you're
  • 00:08:17
    beach people there's beach people
  • 00:08:19
there's mountain people and you guys are
  • 00:08:21
beach people so did the private tour
  • 00:08:24
help you isolate the area that you
  • 00:08:26
thought you were most interested in
  • 00:08:28
yeah for sure i i think um first of all
  • 00:08:31
    your guide
  • 00:08:32
    was super helpful
  • 00:08:34
i i mean and it just continues to even
  • 00:08:37
be helpful now i still use the guide um
  • 00:08:40
and i was able to do i'm a researcher
  • 00:08:43
and i knew that i wanted specific things
  • 00:08:46
and i was able to to find somebody to
  • 00:08:49
take me to all of those different places
  • 00:08:51
    that i wanted to see
  • 00:08:53
i only came for a week
  • 00:08:55
    so it was really um
  • 00:08:58
    we weren't sure
  • 00:08:59
it was trust a lot of trust let's trust
  • 00:09:02
and see if it works out so yes we used
  • 00:09:04
the guide and it was very very helpful
  • 00:09:08
did you find a rental while you were
  • 00:09:10
here on your um exploratory trip
  • 00:09:14
yes so i did i i found a bunch of houses
  • 00:09:19
um that we thought would work for us
  • 00:09:22
    before even coming out
  • 00:09:25
and then i used the time that i was in
  • 00:09:28
    coronado
  • 00:09:29
to look at the specific places and i
  • 00:09:32
found one that worked and then once we
  • 00:09:34
came back we started to negotiate
  • 00:09:37
um with our agent and with the
  • 00:09:41
homeowners that we're renting from right
  • 00:09:42
    now
  • 00:09:53
so one other thing that i was really
  • 00:09:55
    curious about so
  • 00:09:57
    um
  • 00:09:58
i knew you already had already decided
  • 00:10:01
that you really wanted to put your son
  • 00:10:03
into one of the international schools in
  • 00:10:05
the area as opposed to doing
  • 00:10:07
homeschooling or the public schools in
  • 00:10:09
the area the public schools by the way
  • 00:10:12
are spanish or spanish so if you don't
  • 00:10:15
know spanish fluently then it's going to
  • 00:10:18
be a real challenge for a kid to just be
  • 00:10:20
thrown into a public school situation
  • 00:10:23
and homeschooling is a good option for
  • 00:10:25
some people except you both have a
  • 00:10:28
business that keeps you super busy all
  • 00:10:30
the time anyway so homeschooling really
  • 00:10:33
wasn't a really good option because it
  • 00:10:35
would take too much time away from your
  • 00:10:37
    business
  • 00:10:38
    um
  • 00:10:40
so someone said i am unmuted so you did
  • 00:10:43
    you check
  • 00:10:45
let us know how you evaluated some of
  • 00:10:48
the different i think there's about five
  • 00:10:49
international schools in your area four
  • 00:10:51
    or five so
  • 00:10:53
um how did you evaluate them and make a
  • 00:10:56
decision on which one to go with
  • 00:10:58
okay so maybe some of you can fill
  • 00:11:00
    jackie in on this
  • 00:11:02
because we have a very interesting
  • 00:11:05
    situation
  • 00:11:06
um we came out or i came out during the
  • 00:11:09
pandemic and most of the schools weren't
  • 00:11:12
    open
  • 00:11:13
so they were not i couldn't really see
  • 00:11:16
what school looked like and so i went to
  • 00:11:20
    at that point
  • 00:11:22
    they were barely even taking
  • 00:11:24
visitors but i was able to tour a few of
  • 00:11:27
the schools on my short journey here and
  • 00:11:30
decide on the one that felt like it
  • 00:11:33
would be the best fit for our son
  • 00:11:36
    um
  • 00:11:37
so we started out with kind of going
  • 00:11:41
blindly because the schools weren't open
  • 00:11:43
we really didn't have the ability to
  • 00:11:45
truly tour to really have much of a
  • 00:11:47
discussion but we knew that there were
  • 00:11:48
schools and we felt that it would work
  • 00:11:51
so we came in we um signed him up after
  • 00:11:54
only being here for one month
  • 00:11:57
and the actual school that we we decided
  • 00:12:00
on just didn't work out for us it wasn't
  • 00:12:02
for our son it just he we found that um
  • 00:12:06
just being new to the country there was
  • 00:12:07
a lot of acclimating that was happening
  • 00:12:10
    especially for
  • 00:12:11
a 13 year old and he just needed more
  • 00:12:14
time and we wanted more time also
  • 00:12:17
the location was pretty far from where
  • 00:12:19
we were and so we were commuting back
  • 00:12:21
    and forth
  • 00:12:22
    20 minutes and so
  • 00:12:25
or 30 minutes there and back so we ended
  • 00:12:27
up taking him out of one school and
  • 00:12:29
putting him into a different school that
  • 00:12:31
was sort of home school but also at a
  • 00:12:35
    location
  • 00:12:36
and but yet we were still driving about
  • 00:12:38
30 minutes and so after all was said and
  • 00:12:41
    done
  • 00:12:42
we decided to end up homeschooling him
  • 00:12:46
so that was that was kind of where we
  • 00:12:48
came from but it's not to say that that
  • 00:12:50
will be for everybody point being is
  • 00:12:53
that we decided we really liked
  • 00:12:55
    homeschooling um
  • 00:12:57
in the situation we are because we're
  • 00:13:00
transient we're not a hundred percent
  • 00:13:02
sure we're going to stay in coronado uh
  • 00:13:04
it gives us the flexibility to
  • 00:13:07
try out different arenas and then move
  • 00:13:10
to a different place and then find the
  • 00:13:12
    right fit so
  • 00:13:15
    that's a lot and jackie probably didn't
  • 00:13:17
    hear any of it
  • 00:13:18
    [Laughter]
  • 00:13:22
    so
  • 00:13:23
what's the price range of the schools in
  • 00:13:27
    your area
  • 00:13:28
you may have already talked about that
  • 00:13:30
    but i couldn't hear you so i don't know
  • 00:13:32
so right no i didn't the project so
  • 00:13:36
the i think the least expensive
  • 00:13:38
international school in panama is eighty
  • 00:13:40
    dollars a month in vulcan
  • 00:13:42
and some of the international schools in
  • 00:13:44
panama city or you know seven eight
  • 00:13:46
hundred dollars a month plus you have to
  • 00:13:48
pay an entry fee on top of it so what
  • 00:13:51
did you find the prices like in the
  • 00:13:53
    coronado area
  • 00:13:54
so i think first of all in the city
  • 00:13:59
    there are a
  • 00:14:00
    lot of very well established
  • 00:14:04
    private schools
  • 00:14:06
the thing that you're gonna find in the
  • 00:14:07
city and and so we may actually end up
  • 00:14:09
moving closer to the city because
  • 00:14:11
there's just a lot more options for the
  • 00:14:13
kids with schooling and um but there are
  • 00:14:16
good schools here in coronado um yes
  • 00:14:20
jackie was saying about i think
  • 00:14:22
five to choose from it's just about
  • 00:14:24
    finding the right fit um
  • 00:14:27
what we found on the high end
  • 00:14:30
you're going to be looking at paying
  • 00:14:32
    about what was it 8 000 a year that's
  • 00:14:35
the high end there's a school in
  • 00:14:37
buenaventura that is a bit pricier and
  • 00:14:40
that's usually what you would find in
  • 00:14:42
    the city
  • 00:14:43
the other schools i believe are probably
  • 00:14:46
    about
  • 00:14:47
    depending on
  • 00:14:49
i think how many kids you have three
  • 00:14:51
thousand to thirty five hundred dollars
  • 00:14:54
a year which is pretty affordable
  • 00:14:57
    the homeschooling program that we're
  • 00:14:59
doing is also about about that much
  • 00:15:02
which by the way that program
  • 00:15:04
    um international virtual learning
  • 00:15:07
academy and it's the same program that
  • 00:15:10
the school in buenaventura is using too
  • 00:15:13
    and it has a full
  • 00:15:14
    uh staff of teachers
  • 00:15:16
so you're not actually teaching it
  • 00:15:18
you're just keeping the kids on task
  • 00:15:20
    so
  • 00:15:21
hope that answers some of that just to
  • 00:15:23
    be clear
  • 00:15:25
    it
  • 00:15:27
it wasn't the buena ventura school but
  • 00:15:30
that school uses the same program we now
  • 00:15:32
    are using to homeschool
  • 00:15:35
our son so you could have the option of
  • 00:15:37
being in a location or home school with
  • 00:15:41
    the same learning program
  • 00:15:43
yeah but the other schools there there
  • 00:15:45
is um there's a bunch of schools here
  • 00:15:47
and they're they're well established in
  • 00:15:48
coronado they have one of them has 250
  • 00:15:51
kids um you know why we chose not to is
  • 00:15:55
because we decided after being here for
  • 00:15:56
a little while we we like being
  • 00:15:58
transient and we like the flexibility of
  • 00:16:01
moving around and not having so much of
  • 00:16:04
a schedule so um i think until we find
  • 00:16:07
the right place that was the best option
  • 00:16:09
for us but if you're going to stay
  • 00:16:11
    there's definitely options for schools
  • 00:16:17
so you may have already talked about
  • 00:16:20
this but because i can't hear you i
  • 00:16:21
don't know so i know you had your son in
  • 00:16:24
one school and for one reason or another
  • 00:16:27
that didn't work out and then you moved
  • 00:16:29
    him to a different school
  • 00:16:31
and now you're homeschooling so um what
  • 00:16:36
were what were some of the things that
  • 00:16:39
didn't work out about the other schools
  • 00:16:41
that made you make the decision that
  • 00:16:43
homeschooling might be a better option
  • 00:16:45
for him at least right now
  • 00:16:48
well we did touch on this but um
  • 00:16:51
what what didn't work out for our son in
  • 00:16:54
particular which i think is important
  • 00:16:56
just to touch on was it was a big
  • 00:17:00
    transition and emotionally
  • 00:17:03
after getting to the new country
  • 00:17:06
we signed him up for school right away
  • 00:17:09
it was like only a month and it was just
  • 00:17:11
too much it was a lot of work
  • 00:17:14
we didn't feel like we had the
  • 00:17:16
flexibility to enjoy living here because
  • 00:17:19
it was you know we had to be up in the
  • 00:17:21
morning and then there was school and
  • 00:17:22
then there was homework and then there
  • 00:17:24
was driving and so it kind of took away
  • 00:17:26
from us being able to enjoy just
  • 00:17:29
relaxing and you know all of life in
  • 00:17:33
panama and get used to living in a new
  • 00:17:34
country and then of course the stress of
  • 00:17:37
that on our son so we took him out
  • 00:17:40
um mostly because we just wanted a
  • 00:17:43
little bit more time to adjust
  • 00:17:48
so with most of the schools the schools
  • 00:17:51
that you checked out what grade range do
  • 00:17:53
they do or some of them only
  • 00:17:56
like you know kindergarten to fifth
  • 00:17:58
grade or some of them all the way to
  • 00:18:01
    12th grade
  • 00:18:03
what's what's available in that area
  • 00:18:07
from what i've seen all of the schools
  • 00:18:09
    pretty much seem to be
  • 00:18:13
pre-k through 12th grade so they on a
  • 00:18:16
lot of them uh will matriculate into the
  • 00:18:19
school system if and you know offer
  • 00:18:22
um the ability to go on to college
  • 00:18:25
    so
  • 00:18:26
    their they're doing i mean it's it's
  • 00:18:29
    good stuff they're getting good
  • 00:18:30
education here so probably in a lot of
  • 00:18:33
    ways better than the us
  • 00:18:36
    so
  • 00:18:37
so um whenever when you did narrow it
  • 00:18:41
down to um maybe one or two schools did
  • 00:18:44
you go and interview the administrator
  • 00:18:47
to help you make your final decision on
  • 00:18:49
which one you were going to go to and
  • 00:18:51
then what's the process like and what
  • 00:18:53
paperwork do you need to bring to get
  • 00:18:56
your child enrolled in a school here in
  • 00:18:58
    panama
  • 00:19:00
    so um
  • 00:19:02
    it's an interesting thing
  • 00:19:04
as mentioned when i first came out i
  • 00:19:06
didn't have the ability to do that
  • 00:19:08
because the schools were closed um it
  • 00:19:10
    was still during quarantine and
  • 00:19:11
    everything was
  • 00:19:13
um also virtual as well as when we first
  • 00:19:15
transitioned into moving here um they
  • 00:19:18
still weren't even in school they were
  • 00:19:20
online and they were still transitioning
  • 00:19:22
into maybe a two or three day a week
  • 00:19:26
    so
  • 00:19:27
when we first came we were luckily able
  • 00:19:30
to sit down and do a tour
  • 00:19:34
    and do an interview
  • 00:19:35
and decide whether it was a good fit and
  • 00:19:38
it was pretty easy we had some papers
  • 00:19:41
that we had to fill out
  • 00:19:43
um i thought that they needed
  • 00:19:45
transcripts from previous schools but it
  • 00:19:47
    didn't seem to be necessary
  • 00:19:50
for us we just told them that we were
  • 00:19:52
interested they gave us some papers to
  • 00:19:54
fill out um we needed passports and
  • 00:19:57
identification do you remember what else
  • 00:19:59
    we needed money my money
  • 00:20:03
    so
  • 00:20:05
    and coronado
  • 00:20:06
um besides you know what it costs per
  • 00:20:09
month and i don't know if you have to
  • 00:20:10
pay one or two months in advance did
  • 00:20:12
they have any kind of a sign up fee that
  • 00:20:15
you had to pay also on top of that
  • 00:20:18
    yes
  • 00:20:19
and you don't get any of that back if
  • 00:20:20
    you leave probably right
  • 00:20:22
    no that sucks
  • 00:20:24
    that's that's that's another thing so
  • 00:20:26
it's dependent on each kids have to wear
  • 00:20:28
a uniform at those schools or can they
  • 00:20:30
    just wear civilian clothes
  • 00:20:33
there is ones there are okay one school
  • 00:20:35
in coronado i believe has a uniform
  • 00:20:39
um the schools the other schools were
  • 00:20:41
wear whatever you want some were more
  • 00:20:44
flexible than others i mean again it
  • 00:20:46
really depends on you as a parent and as
  • 00:20:49
a family what works best for your your
  • 00:20:52
desired learning style for your child
  • 00:20:55
    um
  • 00:20:56
some people thought that some schools
  • 00:20:57
were too were too easy going um there is
  • 00:21:00
some schools that were a little bit more
  • 00:21:03
    um
  • 00:21:04
rigorous with the educational side and
  • 00:21:06
so it just depends you have to pick and
  • 00:21:09
choose what works for you there are
  • 00:21:10
schools that do have a uniform i think a
  • 00:21:14
    bunch of the schools in
  • 00:21:17
panama city do require uniforms and they
  • 00:21:19
have a little bit more structure
  • 00:21:22
    but
  • 00:21:23
we haven't really checked that out so
  • 00:21:27
    yeah so
  • 00:21:29
another question is um i know we've
  • 00:21:31
talked personally about it and i'm not
  • 00:21:33
going to go into details but
  • 00:21:36
um originally the house that you guys
  • 00:21:38
are in is just absolutely amazing and a
  • 00:21:41
beautiful pool and a beautiful ocean
  • 00:21:43
view and a really nice safe neighborhood
  • 00:21:47
    and all of those things
  • 00:21:50
but are there other kids around in that
  • 00:21:52
neighborhood for your son to play with
  • 00:21:55
see that's part of the issue that we had
  • 00:21:58
was we didn't realize how isolated we
  • 00:22:01
would be we're in a beautiful house of
  • 00:22:04
    maybe there's a community of maybe 15
  • 00:22:06
homes but they're weekend homes and for
  • 00:22:09
panamanian families that live in the
  • 00:22:11
    city
  • 00:22:12
    and so um
  • 00:22:14
the and the no kids and so here at least
  • 00:22:17
when you're in the beach community
  • 00:22:19
we found the best way to meet other kids
  • 00:22:22
is to the activities um the condos
  • 00:22:26
joining groups which we really didn't do
  • 00:22:29
a lot of right away and so that is
  • 00:22:32
essential if you have a child essential
  • 00:22:35
    um and so
  • 00:22:37
we found it a bit isolating um and then
  • 00:22:40
really needed to do a lot of the extra
  • 00:22:42
    work
  • 00:22:43
    to
  • 00:22:44
go out and meet people but where
  • 00:22:47
you need to have common interests and
  • 00:22:51
and usually when people live in a
  • 00:22:53
community like the um the condos
  • 00:22:56
there's more children around and and i
  • 00:22:58
think that that if we were to do it over
  • 00:23:01
probably and live in the beach community
  • 00:23:03
would have decided to live in a condo
  • 00:23:06
    first so
  • 00:23:08
yeah you know we have some tour guides
  • 00:23:11
ellen and steve bailey and when they
  • 00:23:13
they're kind of like you they were
  • 00:23:14
moving from alabama but they had always
  • 00:23:17
dreamed of living right on the beach
  • 00:23:19
with a beautiful ocean view so when they
  • 00:23:22
first moved to panama they moved to
  • 00:23:24
    playa blanca
  • 00:23:25
and they had this amazing ocean view
  • 00:23:28
and you know the whole complex is
  • 00:23:30
beautiful the largest salt water pool in
  • 00:23:32
the world is everything was wonderful
  • 00:23:36
but their son was was not too happy um
  • 00:23:39
it was just his birthday i think his
  • 00:23:41
christmas eve and she was asking him
  • 00:23:44
well what do you want you know what do
  • 00:23:45
you want for your birthday and he was
  • 00:23:47
like i just want some friends mom i just
  • 00:23:50
    need some friends
  • 00:23:51
and of course that broke her heart and
  • 00:23:53
she started crying and who did she call
  • 00:23:56
    jackie
  • 00:23:57
christ is not happy what am i gonna do
  • 00:24:00
and i said you need to get him where
  • 00:24:01
there's a bunch of other kids
  • 00:24:03
um so you know i said maybe it's not
  • 00:24:06
going to be that ocean view that you've
  • 00:24:08
been wanting for but you know your son's
  • 00:24:11
only going to be a child for
  • 00:24:13
a certain amount of time and you need to
  • 00:24:15
make sure that they're happy because if
  • 00:24:17
they're not happy then you're not going
  • 00:24:19
    to be happy yeah so
  • 00:24:21
um so they ended up moving to bocce and
  • 00:24:24
    now
  • 00:24:25
their son is 18. i think he was 11 when
  • 00:24:28
he moved here and now he's 18. fluent in
  • 00:24:30
spanish walks around all of his friends
  • 00:24:33
    or panamanians
  • 00:24:34
um if you didn't know it you wouldn't
  • 00:24:36
know he was from the united states
  • 00:24:39
because he he speaks his spanish is so
  • 00:24:42
    good
  • 00:24:42
    but
  • 00:24:43
having chil you know investigating where
  • 00:24:46
are the places where there's other kids
  • 00:24:48
that my kid and especially in the same
  • 00:24:51
age group because if you've got a
  • 00:24:52
six-year-old and all the other kids are
  • 00:24:54
17 then that's not a good mix either
  • 00:24:57
    or vice versa so
  • 00:25:00
part of the thing when you're moving
  • 00:25:02
    here with children is definitely
  • 00:25:05
besides the beautiful house and besides
  • 00:25:07
the ocean view and all those things that
  • 00:25:09
appeal so much to mom and dad
  • 00:25:12
if you've got children you really have
  • 00:25:14
to take into consideration is where are
  • 00:25:16
the other kids um are there any social
  • 00:25:19
activities for their kids you know if
  • 00:25:21
your kid played soccer in california is
  • 00:25:24
there soccer here if they were in
  • 00:25:25
gymnastics is there gymnastics here if
  • 00:25:28
    they
  • 00:25:28
like to swim is there swimming pool
  • 00:25:30
close by for you know a public swimming
  • 00:25:33
pool that people can go in so
  • 00:25:36
um those are all some things that if
  • 00:25:38
    you're moving here with children
  • 00:25:40
yes it might be your life dream to live
  • 00:25:42
where there's a beautiful ocean view but
  • 00:25:44
    you've got to really
  • 00:25:46
take a hard look at what's available for
  • 00:25:49
your child for them to be happy and
  • 00:25:51
maybe even have a conversation with them
  • 00:25:54
as you know we're moving to this new
  • 00:25:55
    country
  • 00:25:56
    and
  • 00:25:57
people are going to speak a different
  • 00:25:59
language but there's going to be expats
  • 00:26:01
    there that speak english also
  • 00:26:03
    but um ask them
  • 00:26:06
kind of like i tell people when you're
  • 00:26:07
moving to panama make your list of the
  • 00:26:09
top five things of the top 10 10 things
  • 00:26:13
you must have in your life for you to be
  • 00:26:15
happy but ask your kids that same
  • 00:26:17
question what are some things you need
  • 00:26:20
in your life for you to be happy and
  • 00:26:22
maybe they want to be able to play
  • 00:26:25
baseball and that makes them happy or
  • 00:26:27
they want to go to a school where
  • 00:26:29
everybody speaks english and that makes
  • 00:26:31
them happy or maybe they want to be able
  • 00:26:33
    to go see grandma
  • 00:26:35
twice a year and that will make them
  • 00:26:37
happy but um just like we as adults have
  • 00:26:40
to evaluate what's going to make us
  • 00:26:42
happy in this foreign country and find
  • 00:26:44
the place that has those things we have
  • 00:26:46
    to um
  • 00:26:47
ask our children that question also and
  • 00:26:50
yes even if they're only seven or eight
  • 00:26:52
years old or 10 years old um it's going
  • 00:26:55
to affect them so you want them to be
  • 00:26:57
happy and if you ask them up front what
  • 00:27:00
    would make you happy
  • 00:27:02
then you know then you have that list
  • 00:27:04
and maybe they hit it off maybe they
  • 00:27:06
they missed a few things on the list and
  • 00:27:08
they didn't know until they get to
  • 00:27:10
panama what really makes them happy
  • 00:27:13
but um they're probably have some ideas
  • 00:27:16
or or even where they're living right
  • 00:27:18
now what are the top five things that
  • 00:27:20
you love about living in the place where
  • 00:27:22
    you are right now
  • 00:27:24
and can we transfer that into the place
  • 00:27:27
    that you're moving to
  • 00:27:29
and if you can't then maybe you need to
  • 00:27:30
find a different place in panama so i
  • 00:27:33
    know you guys are um
  • 00:27:36
    have done some
  • 00:27:37
soul searching and evaluation and you've
  • 00:27:40
kind of made some decisions that if you
  • 00:27:42
had it to do all over again instead of
  • 00:27:45
moving where you are right now you would
  • 00:27:48
have maybe moved to a different location
  • 00:27:50
also so tell us what you think might
  • 00:27:53
would have been a better place for your
  • 00:27:56
whole family including your son my cat's
  • 00:27:59
trying to get in on the action here
  • 00:28:02
    um well i think um
  • 00:28:04
it's an interesting thing i think that
  • 00:28:06
each family is different in what their
  • 00:28:10
as jackie was saying what works best for
  • 00:28:12
them um our son actually likes it here
  • 00:28:16
um he hasn't had a difficult time here
  • 00:28:19
um it's just been things that you learn
  • 00:28:22
as you go along in the journey that we
  • 00:28:24
decided okay maybe maybe we would like
  • 00:28:26
this a little better or maybe this is
  • 00:28:28
you know um more for us as as you know
  • 00:28:32
as a family what we do um where we are
  • 00:28:36
it's a big outdoorsy community you need
  • 00:28:39
to be hiking and surfing and outdoor and
  • 00:28:42
there's a lot of kids here actually
  • 00:28:44
there it's not that there aren't kids
  • 00:28:45
    here there are um
  • 00:28:47
our son's not really a surfer he's not
  • 00:28:49
really a hiker he's a computer gamer kid
  • 00:28:53
and we kind of are used to living closer
  • 00:28:55
to the city where we were um and so that
  • 00:28:58
was what our lifestyle was and so i
  • 00:29:01
think that for us we probably would move
  • 00:29:04
closer to the city and that's where
  • 00:29:07
    we're considering just because there
  • 00:29:08
there is those the soccer and the
  • 00:29:11
activities spiking and there's a lot
  • 00:29:14
more things that um i think that we'll
  • 00:29:17
    find that
  • 00:29:18
are of interest to us too
  • 00:29:21
    um
  • 00:29:22
    but
  • 00:29:22
other than that i think that you know
  • 00:29:25
it's just up to the family to find what
  • 00:29:27
what a good fit is and i think with our
  • 00:29:30
situation we realize that this is
  • 00:29:33
learning curve um to to find the right
  • 00:29:36
place right away doesn't always happen i
  • 00:29:38
know a lot of families you know maybe
  • 00:29:40
they hit they hit the jackpot and they
  • 00:29:42
they land right away and it works out
  • 00:29:45
great for them um but i think that it's
  • 00:29:48
to be flexible um and and you you try it
  • 00:29:51
and if it doesn't work that's okay you
  • 00:29:53
know and then maybe we try something new
  • 00:29:55
uh maybe there's pedese or maybe there's
  • 00:29:58
boquete or maybe we try the city for a
  • 00:30:00
few months um i know the one thing that
  • 00:30:03
    our son has gotten
  • 00:30:05
he's matured a lot wouldn't you say yeah
  • 00:30:08
    absolutely
  • 00:30:09
    for
  • 00:30:10
if you want to add in anything
  • 00:30:12
the microphone is right here and since
  • 00:30:15
no one could hear us i've been trying to
  • 00:30:17
just speak directly into them i think
  • 00:30:19
yeah i think the one thing to add is
  • 00:30:22
would i do it differently no i wouldn't
  • 00:30:25
    do it differently
  • 00:30:26
now we're ongoing is wonderful and i'm
  • 00:30:29
    happy for it
  • 00:30:30
    but
  • 00:30:31
we as individual families spend a lot of
  • 00:30:34
    time at home
  • 00:30:35
    so
  • 00:30:36
our home was our sanctuary so we wanted
  • 00:30:38
a beautiful space where we could forget
  • 00:30:40
about the world and just be in our
  • 00:30:42
    moments
  • 00:30:43
what we weren't able to do was then
  • 00:30:45
equally go out and find the individual
  • 00:30:49
so that was the hesitation but over the
  • 00:30:52
past year that we've been here the
  • 00:30:54
entire family has spent a lot of time at
  • 00:30:56
home so it's been a very
  • 00:30:58
calm relaxing time and now it's the next
  • 00:31:01
phase i think that that's part of it is
  • 00:31:04
that and our son's had a really um
  • 00:31:07
    really easy year
  • 00:31:09
i mean he's enjoyed himself walking at
  • 00:31:12
the beach and um we have met people it's
  • 00:31:15
just i think we're just the types that
  • 00:31:17
we do work from home and we have our own
  • 00:31:18
schedule and you know um and so
  • 00:31:22
fitting in the way that we work with
  • 00:31:24
    with life
  • 00:31:25
um in panama that's just been our you
  • 00:31:29
know our journey yeah for sure
  • 00:31:31
but it's been a good year and we we
  • 00:31:34
decided you know maybe that would work a
  • 00:31:35
little better and we want that so we're
  • 00:31:37
    we're moving on to
  • 00:31:39
    different
  • 00:31:40
    different journeys
  • 00:31:41
while you can try as many new things as
  • 00:31:43
    you can
  • 00:31:44
yeah so you know um i know one family
  • 00:31:48
that moved here and they were only here
  • 00:31:50
about a year and then they left um and
  • 00:31:52
they lived in a gated community with
  • 00:31:55
    their daughter
  • 00:31:56
and um she could go to the gym
  • 00:31:59
there or she could walk around that
  • 00:32:01
gated community and there were maybe one
  • 00:32:03
or two other expat kids that lived in
  • 00:32:05
the gated community but she never ever
  • 00:32:08
    had any actual inner
  • 00:32:10
    interaction with panamanian kids ever
  • 00:32:14
she never went to soccer to watch
  • 00:32:16
pandomanians play she never went to
  • 00:32:19
you know the band practice to see the
  • 00:32:21
panamanians band practice so she never
  • 00:32:24
    had enter any interaction
  • 00:32:26
and she really didn't get to enjoy
  • 00:32:29
this new culture and all these new
  • 00:32:31
people and and even have an opportunity
  • 00:32:34
to learn another language because she
  • 00:32:35
was only exposed to expat kids in
  • 00:32:38
    english
  • 00:32:40
and um the couple i was telling you
  • 00:32:42
about ellen and steve and their son
  • 00:32:45
uh whenever they first lived in playa
  • 00:32:47
blanca there were no other kids he was
  • 00:32:50
the only kid on the weekends sometimes
  • 00:32:53
people would come in on the weekend just
  • 00:32:55
to spend the weekend because it's an
  • 00:32:57
all-inclusive resort but it wasn't until
  • 00:33:00
he moved to an area where there was a
  • 00:33:02
mix of panamanian kids expat kids
  • 00:33:05
um that he started meeting people
  • 00:33:08
started making friends they asked him to
  • 00:33:11
be in the band he's homeschooled but
  • 00:33:12
they asked him to be in the band anyway
  • 00:33:15
and to march in the parade whenever they
  • 00:33:17
    had a parade
  • 00:33:18
    so
  • 00:33:19
i think it's real important that
  • 00:33:22
as much as we want to protect our
  • 00:33:24
children and share shelter our children
  • 00:33:26
from any harm that can possibly happen
  • 00:33:28
to them we also have to let go a little
  • 00:33:31
    bit um and let them
  • 00:33:34
visit with um even if they don't
  • 00:33:36
understand a word that that panamanian
  • 00:33:39
kid is saying let them hang out and you
  • 00:33:41
can be right there watching the whole
  • 00:33:43
thing but let them be exposed to the
  • 00:33:46
other culture let them be exposed to
  • 00:33:48
    other language let them
  • 00:33:50
    be
  • 00:33:51
around other people i don't know if you
  • 00:33:53
know but when i was a teenager i lived
  • 00:33:55
in germany for three years and my dad
  • 00:33:59
    was in the military
  • 00:34:01
and there was no base housing so we had
  • 00:34:03
to live off base so it was me and my
  • 00:34:06
sister and we lived off space and we
  • 00:34:07
    were the only two
  • 00:34:09
    um blond-haired
  • 00:34:11
    english-speaking children in the whole
  • 00:34:13
town so it didn't take very long of
  • 00:34:16
course we met all the other german kids
  • 00:34:18
and in like three months i was fluent in
  • 00:34:21
german of course i don't know any of it
  • 00:34:23
now because if you don't use it you lose
  • 00:34:25
    it
  • 00:34:26
    but um
  • 00:34:27
but and i'm not saying that you should
  • 00:34:29
move to a panamanian neighborhood but
  • 00:34:31
it's really good to get your children
  • 00:34:34
that's part of living in panama is being
  • 00:34:36
exposed to not just the beauty of this
  • 00:34:38
country and all the things it has to
  • 00:34:40
offer but the people and you can learn
  • 00:34:43
so much from the children and the people
  • 00:34:45
and the panamanian adults will take your
  • 00:34:49
kids in just like they're your own and
  • 00:34:51
love them just as much as you do and
  • 00:34:54
feed them you know if they're if they
  • 00:34:56
    know that you're
  • 00:34:57
um not home for lunch they'll say well
  • 00:34:59
come on over here for lunch all in
  • 00:35:01
spanish of course but your kids pick up
  • 00:35:04
on what it is that they're talking about
  • 00:35:06
    so
  • 00:35:07
it doesn't take very long for kids the
  • 00:35:10
younger they are the younger you are the
  • 00:35:13
easier it is to learn a new language i
  • 00:35:15
know that from personal experience the
  • 00:35:17
older you are the harder it is to learn
  • 00:35:20
a new language it can be done if you're
  • 00:35:22
    willing to really really practice
  • 00:35:24
practice practice all the time but i'm
  • 00:35:26
busy you're busy and it's a little bit
  • 00:35:29
harder whenever you're older but um kids
  • 00:35:32
    especially if they're under
  • 00:35:34
you know under 17 or 18 they can pick
  • 00:35:37
right up if they're exposed to it they
  • 00:35:40
can pick right up to in another language
  • 00:35:43
of spanish and it just makes them feel
  • 00:35:45
ten feet tall and so powerful like a
  • 00:35:48
superman or superwoman whenever they all
  • 00:35:50
of a sudden they can communicate in a
  • 00:35:52
    completely different languages with
  • 00:35:54
someone it really empowers them i think
  • 00:35:58
    not to do that
  • 00:36:00
    yeah so
  • 00:36:02
i think that what are some other what
  • 00:36:04
are some other plans that you have for
  • 00:36:06
    your son
  • 00:36:07
um to help him integrate with this new
  • 00:36:10
    culture now that you're here
  • 00:36:12
and kind of figuring your way around to
  • 00:36:14
different things what are some other
  • 00:36:16
    plans that you have
  • 00:36:18
yeah i was just jackie can't hear us
  • 00:36:21
    i keep forgetting um but
  • 00:36:24
the the fascinating thing for us is i
  • 00:36:26
think that we have integrated more so
  • 00:36:29
with the panamanian culture than the
  • 00:36:31
    expats
  • 00:36:32
    that's that's just i don't know where
  • 00:36:35
we just found ourselves um really having
  • 00:36:38
    more
  • 00:36:39
    panamanian connections
  • 00:36:41
    um friends with with
  • 00:36:44
    people that were born here
  • 00:36:46
and our son also has had more to do with
  • 00:36:49
    we do have
  • 00:36:51
a groundskeeper that's here and he
  • 00:36:53
brings his family and um and our son has
  • 00:36:56
gotten to know the the children and the
  • 00:36:58
family and um and so for us it's really
  • 00:37:01
    been more about integrating directly
  • 00:37:03
    with the culture
  • 00:37:05
um back to if people were going to move
  • 00:37:07
    to this area
  • 00:37:09
i just wanted to touch base on if you
  • 00:37:11
did want to have a lot more
  • 00:37:13
    children
  • 00:37:15
and expat families gorgona is a
  • 00:37:19
    much younger
  • 00:37:20
area i think you're going to find that
  • 00:37:22
there are a lot of kids um and things
  • 00:37:25
going on in gorgona and there's actually
  • 00:37:27
a lot of local culture there too
  • 00:37:30
    so um
  • 00:37:31
just adding that in for us we really
  • 00:37:34
actually like to integrate um into a
  • 00:37:38
    place that maybe
  • 00:37:39
um isn't all expats we liked the idea of
  • 00:37:43
    having
  • 00:37:44
    um
  • 00:37:45
the experience and the integration with
  • 00:37:47
the panamanian culture that's been my
  • 00:37:49
favorite part and i think our sons too
  • 00:37:52
    yeah
  • 00:37:52
i think the only thing i'll add is
  • 00:37:56
our son myself we spoke zero spanish
  • 00:37:59
    coming here
  • 00:38:01
and he still doesn't speak much spanish
  • 00:38:03
because we don't do a tremendous amount
  • 00:38:05
    of integrating
  • 00:38:06
he has picked up words but in the very
  • 00:38:09
beginning it felt overwhelming for him
  • 00:38:12
so i was able to give him certain words
  • 00:38:15
    that made him feel empowered
  • 00:38:17
certain phrases to know that if there
  • 00:38:20
was ever a need he knew something like i
  • 00:38:23
    don't understand
  • 00:38:24
i need help or whatever it may be and
  • 00:38:27
that was very useful for him
  • 00:38:29
to have at least those as he began to
  • 00:38:32
pick up the language more and more
  • 00:38:35
oh the other the last thing is safety
  • 00:38:37
um because jackie mentioned it um i i
  • 00:38:41
feel absolutely safe in this country we
  • 00:38:44
we leave our son by himself all the time
  • 00:38:47
    we feel he's totally fine it's i've
  • 00:38:49
never felt unsafe here at all um
  • 00:38:53
    you know it's
  • 00:38:55
it's it's fine you know so in regards to
  • 00:38:58
being isolated in a gated community i
  • 00:39:00
    don't think that's necessary i think
  • 00:39:02
    that um
  • 00:39:03
i think that the culture in the country
  • 00:39:05
    is
  • 00:39:06
    um definitely a place where
  • 00:39:09
you could feel safe with your children
  • 00:39:11
    so
  • 00:39:18
so one other because i can't hear you i
  • 00:39:21
think you've stopped talking right okay
  • 00:39:23
    so
  • 00:39:24
    um
  • 00:39:26
what about um are there any organized
  • 00:39:29
social activities or the with a church
  • 00:39:31
or other expats or panamanians um how
  • 00:39:35
would you if someone was going to move
  • 00:39:37
here with their children besides just
  • 00:39:39
getting on all the facebook groups and
  • 00:39:41
asking other people you know is there
  • 00:39:43
any roller skating here or is there any
  • 00:39:45
gymnastics here or is there baseball
  • 00:39:48
    here
  • 00:39:48
um how do you how can you find out
  • 00:39:51
    what social activities might be
  • 00:39:53
    available for
  • 00:39:55
your child or whenever you're moving
  • 00:39:58
here that are in their age group and how
  • 00:40:00
can they get involved in it how do you
  • 00:40:02
    find out about that
  • 00:40:04
    so
  • 00:40:05
some of that is through the schools
  • 00:40:07
i think that when if you enroll your
  • 00:40:09
children in schools you're going to just
  • 00:40:12
through word of mouth you're going to
  • 00:40:13
meet people you're going to hear about
  • 00:40:14
    things going on
  • 00:40:15
    um and
  • 00:40:17
the other part is um there are groups uh
  • 00:40:20
    church groups um
  • 00:40:23
you know if you're active in that there
  • 00:40:25
there's like youth groups for kids all
  • 00:40:28
kinds of stuff there if you're if your
  • 00:40:30
    kids into activities
  • 00:40:32
there are facebook groups mostly people
  • 00:40:34
post on the facebook groups i think
  • 00:40:36
there are moms groups and homeschooling
  • 00:40:39
groups and you just search through
  • 00:40:41
facebook and there's a group for just
  • 00:40:43
about everything um and then when you
  • 00:40:45
meet people you just talk and you just
  • 00:40:47
ask and people share um it's a very word
  • 00:40:50
of mouth type of community and then you
  • 00:40:52
hear you meet people and then people
  • 00:40:53
invite you to places um and so i think
  • 00:40:56
    just get out
  • 00:40:57
    get out join groups um
  • 00:41:00
and then just begin to socialize that
  • 00:41:02
    way
  • 00:41:04
    okay
  • 00:41:06
so um if anybody has any question for
  • 00:41:09
janine and carl if you would please post
  • 00:41:12
it in our chat room and put three
  • 00:41:14
question marks in front of it so i can
  • 00:41:16
easily spot it but while we're waiting
  • 00:41:19
for the questions to come in um what
  • 00:41:21
advice would you have for other parents
  • 00:41:24
that are thinking about moving to panama
  • 00:41:26
    with their children
  • 00:41:29
    you want to start
  • 00:41:33
    i think um
  • 00:41:35
i think you said it the the first piece
  • 00:41:37
    of advice would be to
  • 00:41:40
give yourself permission to have a
  • 00:41:42
    little bit of time
  • 00:41:43
before you start to re-integrate into
  • 00:41:46
your daily life right you don't know
  • 00:41:48
what you're going to have to deal with
  • 00:41:51
or do or or move forward with
  • 00:41:53
so if you give yourself a little bit of
  • 00:41:55
time i was starting to feel
  • 00:41:58
rushed on time because i didn't want my
  • 00:42:00
son to miss anything in school but
  • 00:42:02
looking back i could have easily given
  • 00:42:04
them two more months let everyone settle
  • 00:42:06
    in
  • 00:42:07
and then have a really positive
  • 00:42:10
    experience
  • 00:42:12
we with our son did not have a positive
  • 00:42:15
positive experience in the very first
  • 00:42:17
    interaction so for him
  • 00:42:19
it was then overcoming that feeling so
  • 00:42:21
if you have a little bit of patience i
  • 00:42:23
think that's a really good start for you
  • 00:42:26
    yeah i think um
  • 00:42:28
i guess the word would be flexibility
  • 00:42:30
    being flexible especially with children
  • 00:42:33
    especially with like
  • 00:42:34
    you know um
  • 00:42:36
lots of things change here uh i think
  • 00:42:38
    being in panama
  • 00:42:40
one of the things is is just to be open
  • 00:42:43
to you know one day you have electricity
  • 00:42:45
one day you don't one day you can you
  • 00:42:48
know we do these virtual things and we
  • 00:42:50
can't hear on the microphone there
  • 00:42:53
there's just a lot of things and you
  • 00:42:54
just kind of learn to just go with the
  • 00:42:56
    flow
  • 00:42:57
and so with children i think being
  • 00:42:59
flexible um also in their integration in
  • 00:43:02
their process and our son is a little
  • 00:43:05
bit more shy in certain ways with
  • 00:43:07
meeting kids and so we weren't very
  • 00:43:08
pushy with that we we let him just kind
  • 00:43:11
    of feel into
  • 00:43:12
the environment and and do it his way
  • 00:43:15
and if something didn't work out okay
  • 00:43:16
you know um he's still young and
  • 00:43:19
    learning and so
  • 00:43:20
um i think the flexibility for us was
  • 00:43:23
really where it was at and and um
  • 00:43:26
why the homeschooling was a good idea
  • 00:43:28
for us with just figuring out where we
  • 00:43:30
wanted to land our feet uh was because
  • 00:43:33
it was less on him to be going in and
  • 00:43:36
    out of different schools um
  • 00:43:38
so we just thought okay you know once we
  • 00:43:41
    figure it out then
  • 00:43:43
    then then we can
  • 00:43:45
integrate him more into something that's
  • 00:43:47
a little bit more stable if at all
  • 00:43:49
because this for us is an experience and
  • 00:43:51
who knows if we'll stay forever or a few
  • 00:43:53
    years
  • 00:43:54
    or
  • 00:43:55
    who knows so
  • 00:44:00
yeah so someone a couple of different
  • 00:44:03
questions you should know that in panama
  • 00:44:05
    that
  • 00:44:06
the school year in panama if you're
  • 00:44:08
going to a public school starts like the
  • 00:44:11
end of february the first part of march
  • 00:44:13
and you usually have like december
  • 00:44:15
    january february is their summer
  • 00:44:18
vacation but if you're going to an
  • 00:44:20
    international school
  • 00:44:22
if it's a french international school
  • 00:44:24
they go by the french schedule if you're
  • 00:44:27
    going to
  • 00:44:29
school some go by the american schedule
  • 00:44:32
where the summer is a completely
  • 00:44:34
    different time
  • 00:44:35
so and the schools that your son went to
  • 00:44:38
    what kind of schedule then
  • 00:44:40
how long was the school year or what was
  • 00:44:42
their schedule when did it start when
  • 00:44:44
did it end and was it possible to enroll
  • 00:44:46
your son in the middle of the year of
  • 00:44:49
    their school year
  • 00:44:51
    so um
  • 00:44:53
all of the schools that we
  • 00:44:55
    um
  • 00:44:57
were looking at were based on
  • 00:45:00
    the american
  • 00:45:01
educational system and so they started
  • 00:45:04
    school
  • 00:45:05
    based on the same time
  • 00:45:07
    schedule
  • 00:45:09
    as the u.s
  • 00:45:12
i don't know i know that as jackie was
  • 00:45:14
saying there are other schools that
  • 00:45:17
are based in you know french and i have
  • 00:45:20
no idea i didn't look at those um
  • 00:45:23
most of them had open enrollment
  • 00:45:26
although i will say that sometimes they
  • 00:45:28
could get pushy and say oh
  • 00:45:31
if you enroll by this time we have x
  • 00:45:33
amount of kids and we only have this
  • 00:45:35
amount of spots i would say be weary of
  • 00:45:38
that they will always take your
  • 00:45:39
    enrollment
  • 00:45:41
so if you need a little bit more time
  • 00:45:43
take it i wouldn't be pressured into
  • 00:45:45
    that
  • 00:45:46
but um they do most of them have an open
  • 00:45:49
enrollment um and again some will say
  • 00:45:51
that they have only a few spots for
  • 00:45:53
    different grades
  • 00:45:54
but i i don't buy that so um
  • 00:45:58
but yeah i think that because they have
  • 00:46:00
    open enrollment there's also the
  • 00:46:02
flexibility to take a little bit of time
  • 00:46:04
if you want to transition with
  • 00:46:06
homeschooling and then decide later but
  • 00:46:08
just realize that if you enroll your
  • 00:46:12
child into a school they have an
  • 00:46:15
enrollment fee and if you decide that's
  • 00:46:17
not the school of choice for your child
  • 00:46:19
or children you're not going to get that
  • 00:46:21
    back
  • 00:46:22
so even if even if it was
  • 00:46:24
a month or two they're going to keep it
  • 00:46:26
even if it was a week yeah
  • 00:46:28
    so
  • 00:46:29
just just another question that came up
  • 00:46:32
is when as what documentation is needed
  • 00:46:34
    to enroll your
  • 00:46:36
your child into school and also do you
  • 00:46:39
    need vaccine records
  • 00:46:42
    um
  • 00:46:42
no you do not need vaccine records um
  • 00:46:47
we didn't like hand any of that stuff in
  • 00:46:50
    so i don't remember
  • 00:46:52
i don't remember specifically it says on
  • 00:46:56
it says on the website now again these
  • 00:46:57
are the ones in coronado i can't speak
  • 00:47:00
for the established schools in the city
  • 00:47:02
because some of those have been around a
  • 00:47:04
long time and they may have a different
  • 00:47:06
protocol the ones that we went through
  • 00:47:09
they really just wanted you they had
  • 00:47:11
    certain paperwork through the school
  • 00:47:14
    certain
  • 00:47:15
stuff that we had to answer questions
  • 00:47:17
    forums
  • 00:47:18
um and then other than that we just
  • 00:47:20
    showed up
  • 00:47:21
    so
  • 00:47:22
    you know you need identification
  • 00:47:24
so you'll always need a passport until
  • 00:47:26
you have something like here is upset
  • 00:47:28
that he you're getting more attention
  • 00:47:30
than he is he's doing everything he can
  • 00:47:32
to try to get my attention to pet him or
  • 00:47:34
do something and quit talking to you and
  • 00:47:36
i see your dog in the background is
  • 00:47:39
    just uh really
  • 00:47:41
relaxing and enjoying it's a whole new
  • 00:47:43
way of communicating these days we have
  • 00:47:46
our pets involved in everything we do
  • 00:47:49
um well we're not talking about um
  • 00:47:53
    pets
  • 00:47:54
probably the thing that had the most joy
  • 00:47:57
moving here was our animals so if you
  • 00:47:58
    have animals
  • 00:48:00
    our animals are so
  • 00:48:02
    happy here
  • 00:48:04
    yeah they're actually
  • 00:48:05
    happiest
  • 00:48:07
    so
  • 00:48:08
so someone says show the cat i'm gonna
  • 00:48:10
show him in just a little bit when he
  • 00:48:12
comes back over here he's giving up on
  • 00:48:13
me uh giving him all the attention so
  • 00:48:17
    when you're coming as a family here's a
  • 00:48:19
    good question
  • 00:48:21
um when you're coming as a family what
  • 00:48:24
kind of a visa and now you got in just
  • 00:48:27
in the nick of a time before they
  • 00:48:29
changed the friendly nation visa right
  • 00:48:32
so you probably got the old friendly
  • 00:48:34
    nation visa
  • 00:48:35
    yeah which um
  • 00:48:37
it's sort of available still with some
  • 00:48:40
other rules and things so if you guys go
  • 00:48:42
    to my website
  • 00:48:44
    panamarelocationtours.com and in the
  • 00:48:46
    upper right hand corner
  • 00:48:48
um in the search bar um just type in
  • 00:48:51
five thousand dollars and then you can
  • 00:48:53
read about another way to get a friendly
  • 00:48:56
    nation visa the new way
  • 00:48:58
without having to buy two or three
  • 00:49:00
hundred thousand dollars worth of real
  • 00:49:02
    estate
  • 00:49:05
so good question what inspired you to
  • 00:49:07
leave southern california and why panama
  • 00:49:10
    as opposed to other locations
  • 00:49:14
well while you're doing that i'm going
  • 00:49:16
    to get buster
  • 00:49:18
    um i personally
  • 00:49:21
    love southern california
  • 00:49:23
i will probably at some point find my
  • 00:49:25
way back we will probably at some point
  • 00:49:31
    but um we
  • 00:49:33
it was just getting a little bit crazy
  • 00:49:35
the cost of living there is insane
  • 00:49:38
    um
  • 00:49:39
i think that that speaks for itself
  • 00:49:42
uh and and so we wanted an adventure we
  • 00:49:46
wanted an experience we really came here
  • 00:49:48
with the idea of nothing is permanent we
  • 00:49:50
just wanted to try something new uh
  • 00:49:53
after being quarantined and locked down
  • 00:49:55
for so long we wanted to travel
  • 00:49:58
um and so we thought behind you he wants
  • 00:50:01
    in on the action here
  • 00:50:03
    [Laughter]
  • 00:50:07
    and so we thought
  • 00:50:09
    that
  • 00:50:11
at first we thought costa rica
  • 00:50:13
    and
  • 00:50:15
we looked into i'm a type one diabetic
  • 00:50:18
and so i had very specific needs for
  • 00:50:21
medication and so when i looked at costa
  • 00:50:24
rica i realized uh one of their criteria
  • 00:50:26
    was that it was
  • 00:50:28
    illegal to bring certain medications
  • 00:50:30
into the country and one of which was
  • 00:50:33
    insulin
  • 00:50:34
and so i couldn't get my medicine in
  • 00:50:36
costa rica so that was done that was a
  • 00:50:39
done-for-deal so um then i started
  • 00:50:41
looking at panama and i saw okay this is
  • 00:50:44
a possibility um having never been to
  • 00:50:47
    the country
  • 00:50:48
    so
  • 00:50:49
    yeah yeah i i didn't i still haven't
  • 00:50:52
made the choice to move to panama i
  • 00:50:54
don't know where i am right now
  • 00:50:56
    um
  • 00:50:57
it was really just an inspired move out
  • 00:50:59
of nowhere just something is saying look
  • 00:51:01
you know what we've done this place what
  • 00:51:03
where else can we explore for a while
  • 00:51:05
and if you understand anything about the
  • 00:51:07
work we do or if you just vibe with this
  • 00:51:10
as well sometimes the message is loud
  • 00:51:13
enough and it makes no sense and you
  • 00:51:14
follow it anyway this is what we did
  • 00:51:17
yeah and it's worked out fine i think
  • 00:51:19
    that
  • 00:51:21
i think that it's a very peaceful life
  • 00:51:23
here for sure i think that um
  • 00:51:26
you know it's it's really doable it's we
  • 00:51:29
    haven't come across many challenges
  • 00:51:31
living here at all even during the
  • 00:51:33
recent protests i still got my
  • 00:51:36
    medication through fastbacks delivery
  • 00:51:39
    so
  • 00:51:40
    yeah
  • 00:51:41
however saying that um i have grown
  • 00:51:44
tremendously in the past year our entire
  • 00:51:46
    family has grown tremendously literally
  • 00:51:49
and metaphorically our son was about a
  • 00:51:51
foot shorter when we first moved to this
  • 00:51:53
country as soon as we moved here he grew
  • 00:51:57
and he's almost as tall as carl so
  • 00:52:00
    four foot three
  • 00:52:04
yeah you know whenever um whenever i was
  • 00:52:07
looking to move overseas um we'd had
  • 00:52:10
this summer in texas where for 90 days
  • 00:52:13
straight it never got below 100 degrees
  • 00:52:15
even at 2 o'clock in the morning it's
  • 00:52:16
like 105. daytime temperatures were 109.
  • 00:52:20
i said i don't want to live like this
  • 00:52:22
anymore i wanted to live someplace where
  • 00:52:24
i'd never need an air conditioner or
  • 00:52:26
heater again so i spent a lot of time
  • 00:52:29
looking at a lot of different countries
  • 00:52:31
    and
  • 00:52:32
    um
  • 00:52:33
and my number one criteria was no air
  • 00:52:36
conditioner you know to have a beautiful
  • 00:52:38
view was a big big plus
  • 00:52:40
but um as i started visiting some of the
  • 00:52:43
other countries you know i visited
  • 00:52:44
mexico of course and there was all this
  • 00:52:47
talk oh the cartel cut off those
  • 00:52:49
people's head and the cartel did this
  • 00:52:51
    and
  • 00:52:52
that made me a little bit nervous
  • 00:52:54
and then um i went to uruguay because
  • 00:52:56
i'd heard some great things about that
  • 00:52:59
and when i was there there were actually
  • 00:53:01
signs of that said americans go home
  • 00:53:04
it was like well maybe that's not a very
  • 00:53:06
mark that went off the list and then
  • 00:53:08
argentina it seems like they have one
  • 00:53:11
    economic collapse after another they're
  • 00:53:13
in the middle of another one right now
  • 00:53:15
    also so
  • 00:53:16
you have to it's not just how affordable
  • 00:53:19
is the country what's the health care
  • 00:53:21
like in the country how pretty is it how
  • 00:53:25
far is it from the united states you
  • 00:53:26
have to look at the big picture
  • 00:53:28
of how friendly are the people how much
  • 00:53:31
crime is there is there cartel activity
  • 00:53:35
    um
  • 00:53:36
those are all important things but also
  • 00:53:38
the stability of the government i even i
  • 00:53:41
never went there but i considered
  • 00:53:43
nicaragua because i heard good things
  • 00:53:45
    about it but
  • 00:53:46
there's no way i would live in nicaragua
  • 00:53:49
or like venezuela would you want to move
  • 00:53:52
    there i don't think so it's a beautiful
  • 00:53:54
country it's an abs and you can live
  • 00:53:56
    there cheap
  • 00:53:58
but the crime and the government and all
  • 00:54:00
those other things so you have to look
  • 00:54:02
at the big picture of safety
  • 00:54:05
    and the government stability
  • 00:54:08
the food supply where do they get their
  • 00:54:09
food from you if you live on an island
  • 00:54:11
everything is shipped in well what if
  • 00:54:13
there's a hurricane or bad storms for
  • 00:54:15
two weeks no food comes in so what all
  • 00:54:18
can they grow in the country that's a
  • 00:54:20
big plus for panama because they can
  • 00:54:22
grow so much food right here
  • 00:54:24
that we don't have to ship in a lot of
  • 00:54:26
food everything is grown right here but
  • 00:54:29
safety especially if you're moving with
  • 00:54:31
children even if you're not moving with
  • 00:54:33
children but safety should be way at the
  • 00:54:35
top of your list of things to consider
  • 00:54:38
and you just don't hear about
  • 00:54:41
    it's extremely rare
  • 00:54:43
that someone gets kidnapped here it's
  • 00:54:45
    extremely rare that
  • 00:54:48
    they're targeting expats for anything
  • 00:54:50
here so panama's a really really safe
  • 00:54:53
country when you take a look at the big
  • 00:54:56
picture of some of the other countries
  • 00:54:58
that are out there and when you add in
  • 00:55:00
you know the affordable health care
  • 00:55:02
    affordable housing
  • 00:55:04
    beautiful weather no hurricanes
  • 00:55:07
um all those things that just really
  • 00:55:10
it's my panama's consistently ranked at
  • 00:55:12
the top it's why i live here that's
  • 00:55:15
probably why you live here also
  • 00:55:18
yeah so i want to thank you janine and
  • 00:55:21
carl so much for sharing your
  • 00:55:23
    information about
  • 00:55:25
moving to panama with your son
  • 00:55:27
and you know sometimes it takes a little
  • 00:55:29
while to get um all the kinks out
  • 00:55:33
and like moving anywhere if you were
  • 00:55:35
just to move to northern california
  • 00:55:37
    instead of southern california there
  • 00:55:38
would be a transition time to get them
  • 00:55:41
comfortable if you would have moved to
  • 00:55:42
texas it's like learning a different
  • 00:55:44
    language if you're from southern
  • 00:55:46
california with that texas twang which
  • 00:55:49
i'm losing a little bit since i've been
  • 00:55:51
here so long so no matter where you move
  • 00:55:53
    to
  • 00:55:54
    um especially with children there's
  • 00:55:56
going to be a transition time you can't
  • 00:55:58
expect that things is like okay we moved
  • 00:56:00
here in august by september everything's
  • 00:56:04
going to be great it doesn't work that
  • 00:56:06
way it takes time and sometimes you have
  • 00:56:08
to do some course corrections you go to
  • 00:56:10
a different school you find a different
  • 00:56:12
    house
  • 00:56:13
you know you think this is the best
  • 00:56:15
grocery store then all of a sudden you
  • 00:56:16
discover another one that's so much
  • 00:56:18
better with better prices so no matter
  • 00:56:21
where you move to in panama or anywhere
  • 00:56:24
else in the world it just takes time for
  • 00:56:27
you and for your children to adjust to
  • 00:56:30
    the changes
  • 00:56:31
but if you all work together and if you
  • 00:56:34
have little family powwows every once in
  • 00:56:36
a while to talk about what's working
  • 00:56:38
    what's not working
  • 00:56:40
and if it's not working then what can
  • 00:56:42
you do to make it better if you do those
  • 00:56:45
things as a family together then the
  • 00:56:47
family is going to continue to grow
  • 00:56:49
    together and
  • 00:56:51
find the right path to happiness for
  • 00:56:53
everybody so once again thank you so
  • 00:56:55
much for joining us janine and carl
  • 00:56:58
and thank you to all the people that
  • 00:57:00
were our guests on the live stream today
  • 00:57:02
i've got this crazy fly that's after me
  • 00:57:04
    now
  • 00:57:05
so thanks again everybody have a good
  • 00:57:07
    evening
  • 00:57:08
    bye thank you
