- 00:01:28hello everyone Dennis CH here it's my
- 00:01:29last video video of the Year guess what
- 00:01:31I'm feeling really really sick right now
- 00:01:33I'm not feeling good at all but you know
- 00:01:35I still manage to smile that's how good
- 00:01:37I am at this um you you got to do it for
- 00:01:39the algorithm if you don't do it YouTube
- 00:01:41punishes you please don't punish me but
- 00:01:44uh I'd really appreciate if you could
- 00:01:46like And subscribe I have a massive
- 00:01:48massive headache I don't know what's
- 00:01:49going on been sick for the last few days
- 00:01:51and I have a flight tomorrow
- 00:01:53anyway um lately I've been
- 00:01:58practicing up to 12 hours a day it's I
- 00:02:01haven't done this in a long long long
- 00:02:04time in maybe over 20
- 00:02:06years and I kind of just want to share
- 00:02:09some of uh my observations with you the
- 00:02:12difference between now and then was that
- 00:02:14in those days when I practiced up to 10
- 00:02:16hours 12 hours a day I didn't really
- 00:02:18know how to practice efficiently whereas
- 00:02:21now I know how to practice very very
- 00:02:23efficiently in order to get maximum
- 00:02:26results uh as fast as possible of course
- 00:02:29uh progressing as a musician is not a
- 00:02:31race but as many of you might know as
- 00:02:34you get older responsibilities pile up
- 00:02:37and you have to be very efficient with
- 00:02:39your time uh and this is a skill that I
- 00:02:42acquired over many years from
- 00:02:45teaching so many people around the world
- 00:02:48uh through online lessons workshops
- 00:02:51private lessons Homestay
- 00:02:53students um and then
- 00:02:56also being in this kind of unique
- 00:02:58situation where I get to hang out with
- 00:02:59someone of the most famous play famous
- 00:03:01doesn't mean anything but some of the
- 00:03:03most uh respected players in the world
- 00:03:05ber LR Angelo Dear Pat Martino Ula kenos
- 00:03:09uh Mike Stern people with whom I spent a
- 00:03:13lot of time working and people whose
- 00:03:15brain I got to pick we had a lot of
- 00:03:18interesting convers and I learned so
- 00:03:20much I asked them a lot of questions
- 00:03:21about how they practice and I realized I
- 00:03:24kind of extracted you know um the common
- 00:03:28the common points between all these
- 00:03:30artists and I I I've been talking about
- 00:03:32that in my previous videos so if you're
- 00:03:34new to my channel be sure to like be
- 00:03:36sure to subscribe
- 00:03:39please um but definitely the past few
- 00:03:41weeks that's been the topic uh how to
- 00:03:45practice efficiently now here's the
- 00:03:47thing it's not a
- 00:03:49secret it's actually not very very
- 00:03:51complicated but what makes it so hard is
- 00:03:55that it
- 00:03:57requires um a certain certain sense of
- 00:04:01humility and willing to accept that this
- 00:04:05is the way to do
- 00:04:07things and on paper it's very very
- 00:04:11simple but to put into practice is
- 00:04:13extremely extremely hard which is why
- 00:04:14statistically most people fail and I was
- 00:04:17compelled to do this video because of
- 00:04:19this these comments um that I saw on my
- 00:04:22YouTube channel I'm going to put them on
- 00:04:24the screen here clearly this guy is very
- 00:04:27very upset with me but why don't shoot
- 00:04:30the
- 00:04:31messenger like how dare you sorry Greta
- 00:04:35but okay so obviously this guy is very
- 00:04:38very upset then a friend of mine also in
- 00:04:41another video posted this comment which
- 00:04:43I'm going to share right
- 00:04:45now oh he's a cool dude I like them and
- 00:04:48um but I want to clarify certain things
- 00:04:51about that statement it's not that I
- 00:04:54disagree but it's not that I agree
- 00:04:56either it's we have to uh clarify
- 00:04:58certain things so there we go let's
- 00:05:01let's talk about that so this first
- 00:05:03person was
- 00:05:04complaining how dare he dares me to name
- 00:05:07people I can name many people I will but
- 00:05:10um talking about the factor of talent
- 00:05:13which obviously exists I actually made a
- 00:05:15video about this as well I've been
- 00:05:17putting a lot of thought into these
- 00:05:18topics over the the past few years hold
- 00:05:20on feeling
- 00:05:22dizzy hey who knows maybe this is my
- 00:05:24last
- 00:05:26video oo dark humor
- 00:05:29[Music]
- 00:05:35beautiful okay well what was I talking
- 00:05:38about oh yes yes yes okay so
- 00:05:42listen I was one of those people uh who
- 00:05:46was not taught correctly who was very
- 00:05:49eager to learn who practiced so hard and
- 00:05:53it took me many years to achieve what
- 00:05:54most people can now achieve in just
- 00:05:57months so what this person takes offense
- 00:06:00to is the statement that I constantly
- 00:06:02I've been making for the past few years
- 00:06:04cuz I I believe it to be so true that
- 00:06:06within three 3 years one can become a
- 00:06:09fairly decent musician within 5 years
- 00:06:11one can be very good and even surpass a
- 00:06:14lot of quote unquote PR musicians now
- 00:06:16here's the thing a pro musician has very
- 00:06:20little to do with being good PR musician
- 00:06:24in the sense that you make money from
- 00:06:26musical activities means basically that
- 00:06:28maybe you're good at at marketing
- 00:06:30yourself there are lots of amazing
- 00:06:34ridiculously amazing musicians out there
- 00:06:36in the world who barely scrap by some
- 00:06:40Sometimes some of them have day jobs
- 00:06:43they can
- 00:06:44outplay quote unquote Pro musicians then
- 00:06:47you have Pro musicians who are very very
- 00:06:50limited in what they could do
- 00:06:51musically um we're talking about jazz of
- 00:06:53course but it applies to almost any
- 00:06:55style of music um you guys all know this
- 00:06:57right so I don't have to really say this
- 00:06:59so so what I'm saying within 5 years you
- 00:07:00can be like really really good m a
- 00:07:02really really high level musician I
- 00:07:05stand by it however I'm not talking
- 00:07:08about musicians of the caliber of say uh
- 00:07:13Keith Jarrett
- 00:07:15uh pasal Gro ber
- 00:07:19Len those like these are the musicians
- 00:07:24that the top musicians look up to those
- 00:07:26people are of a separate category and
- 00:07:29and I've shared this story before but
- 00:07:32the first time I worked with silv Luke
- 00:07:33who is also of that category who
- 00:07:36unfortunately passed away Bean of the
- 00:07:37year the first time I met him um he
- 00:07:41walks into the studio and one of the
- 00:07:43first things he says he told me he
- 00:07:45checked on my YouTube channel he checked
- 00:07:46out my play and he said to me in French
- 00:07:49Dennis you're a really really really
- 00:07:52good guitar player you're really really
- 00:07:54good I was like wa that made me feel so
- 00:07:57happy but also like kind of shy and
- 00:07:59awkward because I'm in front of a giant
- 00:08:01like obviously I cannot compare myself
- 00:08:03to him at all and I was like oh thank
- 00:08:07you but uh like you know next to guys
- 00:08:09like you and beell I'm nothing and what
- 00:08:12he replied was so funny of but it's true
- 00:08:16it's not arrogant of him to say this but
- 00:08:17he said ah but you know of course not
- 00:08:20berelli and I we are of are of another
- 00:08:23category
- 00:08:24altogether and I like that so I'm not
- 00:08:27talking about people like that I'm
- 00:08:29talking about just like the average
- 00:08:31generic musician you can be very very
- 00:08:34good within 5 years I know so because
- 00:08:37I've I've seen it happen regularly with
- 00:08:41people who knew how to apply the right
- 00:08:43method which I've been sharing with you
- 00:08:45over the past few weeks over the past
- 00:08:47month I've been practicing up to 12
- 00:08:49hours a day of course sometimes I have
- 00:08:50life responsibility so sometimes but
- 00:08:52minimum minimum 5 hours a day between 5
- 00:08:55and 12 hours a
- 00:08:56day um been practicing flamco I got into
- 00:08:59that recently I I'll save that for
- 00:09:02another time I I was kind of reluctant
- 00:09:04about learning flamco and I don't know
- 00:09:06to be honest I don't know how far I want
- 00:09:07to go with it because to me this is such
- 00:09:09a huge commitment if I if I want to get
- 00:09:11even decent I have to spend at least
- 00:09:14three years I'm talking about de I'm not
- 00:09:16good just 3 years I can tell I have to
- 00:09:18spend 3 years practicing at least 3 to 4
- 00:09:23hours a
- 00:09:24day um but you know just a month ago I
- 00:09:28couldn't even do things like this
- 00:09:29[Music]
- 00:09:36I couldn't do
- 00:09:40this I had to practice it like
- 00:09:44this you like how my guitars Out Of Tune
- 00:09:50amazing I spent hours doing just that
- 00:09:54okay I'll T my guitar
- 00:09:57fine um
- 00:09:59and here I'm not warmed up that I spent
- 00:10:01all day in bed I just decided I had to
- 00:10:02make this video
- 00:10:04now cuz I'm leaving Tokyo tomorrow I'm
- 00:10:07going to the west coast of Japan I'm not
- 00:10:08bringing my I'm not going to work while
- 00:10:10I'm there but if I'm warmed up I could
- 00:10:13do this
- 00:10:23faster I couldn't do what we call abano
- 00:10:26raso
- 00:10:33[Music]
- 00:10:34lot of things are a lot of like Compass
- 00:10:36didn't know PA I didn't
- 00:10:39[Music]
- 00:10:56know Alia
- 00:10:59of different Rhythm SE for
- 00:11:08[Music]
- 00:11:10example tons of different things as
- 00:11:20AA tons of different techniques that
- 00:11:22I've been working on the main difference
- 00:11:25between then and now is in order to be
- 00:11:28efficient I know that I have to work on
- 00:11:30actual music I have to think about the
- 00:11:32music I have to be very careful about
- 00:11:34the technique about the sound
- 00:11:36production um and I've been you know
- 00:11:39I've actually hit up some musicians for
- 00:11:41lessons watch a lot of YouTube tutorials
- 00:11:43read a lot about the history and all
- 00:11:45that
- 00:11:46stuff o it's getting hot burning
- 00:11:50up
- 00:11:52okay but this video is not about flamco
- 00:11:55it's just about the act of practice
- 00:11:57being efficient and being able to
- 00:11:58progress
- 00:12:00well in a whole month I managed to
- 00:12:03acquire a lot of new skills a lot of
- 00:12:06knowledge this from practicing at least
- 00:12:095 hours a day um but not just practicing
- 00:12:135 hours but also like listening to the
- 00:12:16music all day while going for a walk I
- 00:12:18put on you know a
- 00:12:20YouTube uh channel of they tons of
- 00:12:23there's a lot of great resources for
- 00:12:25learning flamco online it's amazing it's
- 00:12:27insane a lot of it is in Spanish but
- 00:12:28there's some good English material but I
- 00:12:30watch a lot of tutorial videos watching
- 00:12:31all day listening so even though
- 00:12:33physically practicing maybe 5 hours at
- 00:12:35least but all day listening to the music
- 00:12:38all this while studying Japanese as well
- 00:12:40at the same time multitasking anyway of
- 00:12:42course the best thing for me to do would
- 00:12:44be to move to Spain to learn Spanish and
- 00:12:46all that
- 00:12:54stuff but I that's kind of like the
- 00:12:57problem for me is like I don't I don't
- 00:12:58know how far I want go with it obviously
- 00:13:00if I if I really love it that much
- 00:13:01that's what I would have to do but uh
- 00:13:03probably don't love it that much so it's
- 00:13:06these two comments I want to
- 00:13:09address uh one from my friend who says
- 00:13:12that even 3 hours is not going to cut it
- 00:13:15you have to do it all
- 00:13:17day now to reach the level of someone
- 00:13:20like s van or B yes um definitely you
- 00:13:24have to do it all day for quite a number
- 00:13:27of years between I would say between 5
- 00:13:30to 8 years to start to reach this kind
- 00:13:33of level of uh
- 00:13:37Ridiculousness but for people who manage
- 00:13:39to physically practice three hours a day
- 00:13:43but even like two hours a day two to 4
- 00:13:45hours a day you can reach a very very
- 00:13:49high level I I I firmly believe this you
- 00:13:52guys know this George Benson technique
- 00:14:01[Music]
- 00:14:04well this George Ben sing I didn't spend
- 00:14:0710 hours a day practicing it I I might
- 00:14:09have practiced it
- 00:14:11like you know half an hour a day 1 hour
- 00:14:14a day for few
- 00:14:16months it's not as good as my other
- 00:14:19techniques but it's decent
- 00:14:21[Music]
- 00:14:35I would sound better on an electric
- 00:14:37guitar with a narrower neck but see I
- 00:14:42didn't practice that hard but I got
- 00:14:45decent at it uh that's the key word
- 00:14:47decent don't have to
- 00:14:49be a God you just have to be good so the
- 00:14:54standard is significantly low lower so
- 00:14:57the person complaining why aren't all my
- 00:15:01students uh achieving these
- 00:15:03results and I have said these in my
- 00:15:06videos and I'll say it again here a lot
- 00:15:09of
- 00:15:10people on paper the thing the the the
- 00:15:13advice is very simple but to actually go
- 00:15:16through with it is not easy for so many
- 00:15:19reasons a lot of it is
- 00:15:22psychological and um you have to go
- 00:15:26through uh
- 00:15:29I mean for lack of a better word
- 00:15:31hopefully it doesn't come off the wrong
- 00:15:32way but you have to torture yourself to
- 00:15:35acquire the skill it's kind of like boot
- 00:15:37camp you have to work for it you have to
- 00:15:40desire it so badly so badly that you're
- 00:15:43willing to do anything for it you're
- 00:15:45going to sacrifice a lot of your
- 00:15:46personal life in order to acquire these
- 00:15:49skills and this is a skill these are
- 00:15:51skills that are not developed overnight
- 00:15:53not over a week uh every time you kind
- 00:15:57of level up it takes about 6 months and
- 00:16:00then you have to do it for like I said
- 00:16:03at least 3
- 00:16:04years
- 00:16:06minimum consistently and you can't be
- 00:16:09half F about it for example I had one
- 00:16:12person who came to me wanted to learn
- 00:16:14gypsy jazz guitar
- 00:16:16technique and I I I don't remember but I
- 00:16:19I I I do seem to remember telling that
- 00:16:21person you know your Technique is fine
- 00:16:23as it is why do you want to change it to
- 00:16:26kind of quote unquote the traditional
- 00:16:28pure way I guess that person just had
- 00:16:30this idea that they they should do it
- 00:16:33just because that's how all the best
- 00:16:35players play but that person is already
- 00:16:37like a semi-professional musician but he
- 00:16:41came to me spent a week with
- 00:16:44me and I gave them I gave him the the
- 00:16:48instructions on how to practice what to
- 00:16:50look out for and after a week I told
- 00:16:53them if you continue this way for at
- 00:16:56least 6 months doing it like you know
- 00:16:58maybe 2 hours a day 3 hours the more you
- 00:17:01do it of course uh you'll start to get
- 00:17:04the hang of it but not that's that's not
- 00:17:06enough what's going to make the biggest
- 00:17:09difference because you're a
- 00:17:10semi-professional musician is if you
- 00:17:12start playing gigs you're going to have
- 00:17:14to switch to your new tech to the
- 00:17:17technique that you want to develop
- 00:17:19develop because if you revert back to
- 00:17:22your old you're going to your brain's
- 00:17:23going to get confused the muscle memory
- 00:17:24is going to have a lot of
- 00:17:25trouble so we spent one week it was
- 00:17:29highly successful but a year later when
- 00:17:32I saw that person play they were back to
- 00:17:33their old technique I didn't want to
- 00:17:35talk to that person about why they gave
- 00:17:37up or anything but you see uh maybe that
- 00:17:41person didn't want it that badly after
- 00:17:43all fair enough how badly do you want to
- 00:17:47do things quote unquote uh I don't want
- 00:17:50to use the word correctly that's not
- 00:17:51what I mean I'm not saying that that
- 00:17:52person has bad technique but that person
- 00:17:55specifically came to me for something
- 00:17:57but eventually gave up because like I
- 00:17:59said it's torture uh but the thing is
- 00:18:04you enjoy this torture you have to enjoy
- 00:18:06the process for me for a lot of like the
- 00:18:10most talented people it doesn't feel
- 00:18:12like torture it's just so much joy to
- 00:18:14spend hours and hours figuring stuff out
- 00:18:18and being very very diligent being very
- 00:18:20strict with oneself to make sure that
- 00:18:21they're doing correctly with a good
- 00:18:23sound good mechanics Etc I remember
- 00:18:26talking to Pat Martino he told me when
- 00:18:28he was a kid like how you just spend all
- 00:18:30day sometimes I think he was in the back
- 00:18:32of a truck or something on tour and he
- 00:18:34would just had his guitar and just be
- 00:18:36practicing lines and things like that
- 00:18:38all day all day you have to be so
- 00:18:41obsessive with it you have to have kind
- 00:18:43of something wrong with you those who
- 00:18:45are willing to go through this kind of
- 00:18:48training maybe there's something wrong
- 00:18:50with us so I don't blame anyone for not
- 00:18:53wanting to go through with this this
- 00:18:56process I'm assuming it's kind of the
- 00:18:58same if you want to be a surgeon it's
- 00:19:00not
- 00:19:01like you're good right away you probably
- 00:19:04spend a lot of time practicing
- 00:19:05practicing practicing being very strict
- 00:19:07to get that medical license to become a
- 00:19:11surgeon you have to make sure you're
- 00:19:13doing it correctly CU if not you're
- 00:19:14screwed you can't be a surgeon right
- 00:19:18um in in some ways it's it's stressful
- 00:19:23but I don't feel the stress when I pra
- 00:19:26when I've been practicing 10 hours a day
- 00:19:28I I love every moment of it it's just
- 00:19:30like it was so therapeutic for me but I
- 00:19:33wasn't practicing la la la practicing I
- 00:19:35was really really zoning make sure I was
- 00:19:37doing things
- 00:19:38[Music]
- 00:19:41properly this abaniko I
- 00:19:44was paying attention to the
- 00:19:47mechanics to the sound putting on the
- 00:19:56metronum right a whole month ago I do
- 00:19:59this same thing with picato you know I
- 00:20:02went to a jam session the other day
- 00:20:03where I just used picato the whole way
- 00:20:05through didn't use pick um it wasn't
- 00:20:08perfect but you know it's like if you
- 00:20:10really want to get good at something you
- 00:20:12have to adopt the new mindset and you're
- 00:20:14going to have to accept that you're not
- 00:20:15going to be as
- 00:20:16good um for the next few months maybe
- 00:20:20the next two years
- 00:20:44[Music]
- 00:20:58e
- 00:21:29n
- 00:21:32[Music]
- 00:22:09I think it'd be pretty cool if I faint
- 00:22:10it on camera because it would be
- 00:22:11captured Live on YouTube you can take
- 00:22:13pity on me and buy something on DC music
- 00:22:16school just having its end of year
- 00:22:18sale how was
- 00:22:22that so there are two things one people
- 00:22:26are afraid of practicing correctly
- 00:22:29some people don't know how to practice
- 00:22:30correctly they weren't taught
- 00:22:32how and some people were taught how but
- 00:22:35they're afraid to go through with it and
- 00:22:38then there are people who are taught how
- 00:22:40and they go through with it to a certain
- 00:22:43degree because it's not just an on and
- 00:22:44off switch it's actually a spectrum you
- 00:22:48choose how hard you want to go like to
- 00:22:50be honest I would say my Flamingo
- 00:22:53studies are about 70% serious if I want
- 00:22:57to be even more serious I'd be while I
- 00:22:59move to Spain seek out the musicians
- 00:23:02look for dance studios and ask if I can
- 00:23:04practice like just find a a mentor and
- 00:23:08everything but still I'm practicing
- 00:23:10fairly seriously same thing with this uh
- 00:23:12George Benson
- 00:23:15[Music]
- 00:23:21technique um I didn't go all the way
- 00:23:25through so I'm not as proficient as
- 00:23:28someone Cecil Alexander George Bon or
- 00:23:30Dan Wilson but I can use the technique I
- 00:23:33can play pretty fast if you give me
- 00:23:34electric guitar and if I'm warmed
- 00:23:36[Music]
- 00:23:37up um yeah yeah yeah so it's a spectrum
- 00:23:42you now it's true among the people that
- 00:23:44I've taught
- 00:23:46very uh very few people
- 00:23:49committed to doing things to even let's
- 00:23:54say up to
- 00:23:5550% of the advice that I gave them I
- 00:23:58remember I gave lessons to some people
- 00:24:02who are fantastic soloists they're such
- 00:24:04good soloists but when they have to play
- 00:24:06Rhythm it was not so good like their
- 00:24:08Tempo was like dragging significantly
- 00:24:12and to this day they still haven't
- 00:24:13corrected
- 00:24:15that because I I I feel to to correct
- 00:24:18that again you're going to have to spend
- 00:24:20hours and hours for months at least one
- 00:24:23year of practicing it very seriously
- 00:24:26with so much conscious effort to correct
- 00:24:28Ed and it's frustrating because you play
- 00:24:31solo so
- 00:24:33well but you have this other fundamental
- 00:24:36skill that you're not willing to to
- 00:24:39correct for various reasons it's kind of
- 00:24:43a crush on your ego so you have to kind
- 00:24:44of just like humble yourself
- 00:24:47significantly I worked a lot on
- 00:24:49accompanyment because I figured that's
- 00:24:51one of the ways I could make money as a
- 00:24:53musician so I learned to learn fast it's
- 00:24:57a skill that I acquired
- 00:24:59I learned to accompany as well as I
- 00:25:01could in the gypsy jazz styles and
- 00:25:03that's how I was able to accompany
- 00:25:05people like Angelo dear sta Rosenberg B
- 00:25:07all these great players sometimes I was
- 00:25:10flown out all the way just to another
- 00:25:12country just to play Rhythm for them
- 00:25:13that's how it was with Moses rosener
- 00:25:15they flew me to Hong Kong to play Rhythm
- 00:25:16for
- 00:25:17him um so you have to choose your B
- 00:25:20battles what's it worth to you
- 00:25:27[Music]
- 00:25:29that said I want to mention a few people
- 00:25:31that I know who know the right way to
- 00:25:34practice and who have implement it to
- 00:25:37whatever degree that they chose to
- 00:25:39implement it to so the first one I want
- 00:25:40to talk about is my friend Guan
- 00:25:42compuesto from Wisconsin I've talked
- 00:25:44about him in previous videos he watches
- 00:25:46this YouTube channel is someone that I
- 00:25:48admire very much he's a family man two
- 00:25:51kids got a dog a wife he's got a
- 00:25:53full-time
- 00:25:54job and um he plays semi-professionally
- 00:25:58but like he barely has time to practice
- 00:26:01but he learned how to learn and for a
- 00:26:03guy who barely has any time to practice
- 00:26:05he managed to reach a certain level like
- 00:26:08a decent level I must say and he chose
- 00:26:12to focus on certain things that are
- 00:26:14realistic they like I I've already
- 00:26:16repeated I'm repeating the same story
- 00:26:18but he chose to focus a lot on acc
- 00:26:20compan so he plays rhythm guitar for a
- 00:26:21lot of bands in Madison Wisconsin but
- 00:26:25he's actually pretty decent solo player
- 00:26:26and that's not bad for a guy who
- 00:26:29probably only has time to practice 20
- 00:26:31minutes maybe one hour a day it's
- 00:26:34amazing another guy I want to talk about
- 00:26:37is Will
- 00:26:38Dickerson I met this guy randomly while
- 00:26:40he was a College University student
- 00:26:42doing his Masters in engineering the
- 00:26:45first time I met him I kind of blew him
- 00:26:47off just because statistically most
- 00:26:50people who are busy doing something else
- 00:26:53like engineering or have a full-time job
- 00:26:56if they like I said if you really want
- 00:26:57to get good you have to sacrifice
- 00:27:00something and statistically most people
- 00:27:02are not willing to put in that effort so
- 00:27:05I blew him off the first time but then I
- 00:27:07ran him to him randomly again another
- 00:27:09time while I was in the streets playing
- 00:27:12and he's kind of like man I really love
- 00:27:14just I love it so much and he
- 00:27:15showed me what he managed to learn on
- 00:27:17his own and I was very impressed wow you
- 00:27:20learned this on your own without a
- 00:27:21teacher so I said all right I'm going to
- 00:27:23show you some things I showed them kind
- 00:27:26of the way and now
- 00:27:29he's uh well he's uh he's he's living in
- 00:27:32Austin Texas now I think he has a
- 00:27:33full-time job as an engineer whatever
- 00:27:35but he's also playing
- 00:27:36semi-professionally and he's recording
- 00:27:38an album of which I heard it is amazing
- 00:27:41his his soul Ling is so good and
- 00:27:43actually his rhythm playing is also very
- 00:27:45good he's a very uh well-balanced
- 00:27:47musician now again he's focusing on
- 00:27:50gypsy jazz and he does it very very well
- 00:27:53he's a really really good gypsy jazz
- 00:27:55player so that's one guy
- 00:27:59uh another one is my friend Zach Martell
- 00:28:01this guy moved to Montreal just to be my
- 00:28:04neighbor just to live just to live close
- 00:28:05to me so he can learn from me so so when
- 00:28:08someone's that dedicated of course I'm
- 00:28:11going to show them the way so we focused
- 00:28:13a lot on accompaniment on learning how
- 00:28:17to
- 00:28:17learn and when he first came to me he
- 00:28:20had a degree in I think Jazz but if
- 00:28:24you're watching this sorry but I think
- 00:28:25you'll agree with me you were taught
- 00:28:27wrong
- 00:28:29but I taught you the right way and again
- 00:28:32you're playing very very very well great
- 00:28:35gypsy jazz player you can find these
- 00:28:37people on YouTube type Zack Martell z a
- 00:28:41k or z a k m a r TL uh will Dickerson um
- 00:28:47probably don't have to spell that for
- 00:28:48you Gan
- 00:28:51compuesto those are three
- 00:28:54names that uh that that I can think of
- 00:28:58off the top of my head of people who
- 00:29:00were willing to sacrifice
- 00:29:02something cuz man will Dickerson when he
- 00:29:05was doing his Masters in
- 00:29:07engineering he would wake up every
- 00:29:09morning just to practice one hour or two
- 00:29:11hours go to school then go home and
- 00:29:14practice another hour hour or two and he
- 00:29:17did that for a number of years so he was
- 00:29:19doing three four hours despite being a
- 00:29:21busy master student engineering Zach
- 00:29:24Martell practiced so much as well
- 00:29:29um yeah these are people who were
- 00:29:31willing to sacrifice something who
- 00:29:32accepted that there's going to be pain
- 00:29:34and you have to do it and you have to be
- 00:29:36very strict with yourself so getting the
- 00:29:39good in the right instruction it's not
- 00:29:42even a secret is not enough you have to
- 00:29:44really be willing to go through with it
- 00:29:48um so about this Talent thing now Talent
- 00:29:51certainly does exist some people learn
- 00:29:54faster than others but what's one thing
- 00:29:55that's in common like I talked to B sto
- 00:29:59uh mik Stern whatever all these players
- 00:30:01what's one thing they all had in common
- 00:30:03is they spent hours and hours like there
- 00:30:05was a period of their life where they
- 00:30:06were practicing 10 hours a day so talent
- 00:30:10in itself is not because actually I've
- 00:30:11met people who I think are more talented
- 00:30:13than me but they will never catch up to
- 00:30:16me because they're not willing to
- 00:30:19sacrifice something you have to pay the
- 00:30:21price
- 00:30:23unfortunately um I was willing to pay
- 00:30:25the price up to a certain extent on
- 00:30:28unfortunately I I don't I no longer have
- 00:30:30goals of being like a Godlike player or
- 00:30:33anything I'm I've kind of decided that
- 00:30:38I'm I don't want to say satisfied but
- 00:30:40like I've accepted my level I've made
- 00:30:43peace with it obviously I can be way way
- 00:30:46better but I've made peace with it cuz
- 00:30:47I'm I realize now the price to reach the
- 00:30:50other the next level is spend another
- 00:30:53three or five years practicing 10 hours
- 00:30:56a day
- 00:30:58and I don't know if I'm willing to do
- 00:31:00that for for jazz guitar right now I'm
- 00:31:03doing for Flamingo I don't know how long
- 00:31:05that's going to last to be honest maybe
- 00:31:06it's going to last another year or so
- 00:31:08we'll see definitely at one point
- 00:31:10because uh I have to make money I have
- 00:31:13to write books I have to make content
- 00:31:16Etc
- 00:31:18so it's not realistic for me to be
- 00:31:20practicing 10 hours a day I did it for
- 00:31:22this one past month because I kind of no
- 00:31:24I didn't have time I shouldn't have I
- 00:31:27need money
- 00:31:28but I I just got carried away I couldn't
- 00:31:31help myself definitely if I had the
- 00:31:33knowledge that I have now when I when I
- 00:31:35was 20 or 25 years younger then yes I
- 00:31:38would have gone for it at that time so
- 00:31:40see it's not the age
- 00:31:42thing it's not about the age in itself
- 00:31:45but as many of you know like
- 00:31:47statistically as you get older you have
- 00:31:48responsibilities you have a lot of
- 00:31:50different things in life that that come
- 00:31:52into play that it's better to do this
- 00:31:54when you are younger
- 00:31:58and then that's why there's some people
- 00:32:00I've met I'm going to work hard so that
- 00:32:02I can retire and spend all day
- 00:32:04practicing to get good well I don't
- 00:32:07agree with that either because like I
- 00:32:10said let's say you retire even if you
- 00:32:12retire early let's say you're 50 years
- 00:32:14old you have a lot of
- 00:32:16money but are you going to go are you
- 00:32:19willing to go through Boot Camp style
- 00:32:23training you know you've had a long life
- 00:32:25you worked real hard and then to go
- 00:32:27through this kind of like excruciating
- 00:32:30like training regimen for 5 years there
- 00:32:35statistically no no one like that
- 00:32:38theoretically it's possible but
- 00:32:40statistically uh name someone who kind
- 00:32:44of started From almost scratch past the
- 00:32:47age of something I don't know let past
- 00:32:48the age of 50 say who was willing to
- 00:32:51practice like a madman and with the
- 00:32:55correct method and who reached the level
- 00:32:56of uh
- 00:32:59of ber LR or not okay maybe not B but
- 00:33:02let's say My Level that's not to say
- 00:33:06that people who are older cannot
- 00:33:07progress of course they can but to to
- 00:33:11Really as my friend says in this comment
- 00:33:13like he that's where he's correct in
- 00:33:15saying that you have to spend like a
- 00:33:16lifetime not a lifetime but like
- 00:33:18immerses of 10 hours and it's so
- 00:33:21hardcore uh it's it's not in some ways
- 00:33:24it's not pleasant but if you spend 2
- 00:33:27hours a day 3 hours okay then you can
- 00:33:29get decent and yes in that case I do
- 00:33:32know a few people over the age of 50 who
- 00:33:36are like that but not many there's a guy
- 00:33:38in Montana he used to be from Texas his
- 00:33:42name is
- 00:33:43Max forgot his what is I think his name
- 00:33:45is Max forgot what his last name is he's
- 00:33:48someone every year I see him at the
- 00:33:50gypsy jazz Camp I always see him getting
- 00:33:52better and better so that's but he's an
- 00:33:55exception he's not the rule
- 00:33:56statistically as you get older you kind
- 00:33:57of like psychologically fed up with like
- 00:34:00putting in so much effort right you want
- 00:34:03to enjoy life you should enjoy life
- 00:34:07um so I don't blame anyone for not want
- 00:34:10willing being willing to go through with
- 00:34:13certain things because is the reward
- 00:34:15even worth it what you get for it um
- 00:34:19besides self-satisfaction you're just
- 00:34:20going to be impressing other nerds like
- 00:34:23yourself who are a minority in life you
- 00:34:25just don't want to be a minority
- 00:34:30[Music]
- 00:34:34guys don't cancel me please I'm feeling
- 00:34:36really really sick I really am feeling
- 00:34:37really sick
- 00:34:41okay I've made peace with the fact that
- 00:34:43there are all these young kids who could
- 00:34:44out shred me but I can still hold my own
- 00:34:48I I I hold on to that thing that silv
- 00:34:51Luke said you know for just the average
- 00:34:54musician I'm pretty good I'm pretty
- 00:34:56decent and I'm just I'm I'm content with
- 00:34:58that I'm just not going to I'm not
- 00:35:00willing to
- 00:35:01spend over over six hours a day for the
- 00:35:04next 5 years to reach the next level
- 00:35:06asking too much of me at this point of
- 00:35:08my life now that I'm 42 years old for a
- 00:35:10lot of I think for a lot of these
- 00:35:12talented people I asked ber
- 00:35:14LR when you were younger was there any
- 00:35:16moment in your life where you felt oh
- 00:35:19this is so hard like I'm struggling with
- 00:35:21this I better like pay attention to this
- 00:35:22and B said no guitar was always very
- 00:35:26easy for me I just couldn't help but
- 00:35:28laughing I was like oh okay now I I I
- 00:35:33made a video about Talent you should
- 00:35:35watch this but um just to summarize
- 00:35:38let's let's put it this way let's talent
- 00:35:41for me is not being aware that you are
- 00:35:45doing things the correct way and when
- 00:35:47you're not aware you get kind of you get
- 00:35:49to bypass this step where you have to
- 00:35:52think a lot like for example let's say
- 00:35:55the most efficient way to play this
- 00:35:58phrase is like this let's just say it is
- 00:36:01right now let's say for some reason you
- 00:36:04you don't know you can play this way you
- 00:36:05think you have to play like
- 00:36:06[Music]
- 00:36:09this so you spent many years practicing
- 00:36:13this
- 00:36:14phrase but that's only as fast as you
- 00:36:16can get hor
- 00:36:19me right so the talented person
- 00:36:23realized this is the best way to do it
- 00:36:26the
- 00:36:27[Music]
- 00:36:36or like there are some people who never
- 00:36:38practiced with a metronome because they
- 00:36:41just
- 00:36:42naturally felt the Rhythm in the right
- 00:36:45way in the pocket whereas some people
- 00:36:48like myself I had to put on the
- 00:36:50metronome I had to be very very mindful
- 00:36:52to really concentrate I had to fight my
- 00:36:54urges not to do the thing that I
- 00:36:57shouldn't be doing and that took a lot a
- 00:37:00lot a lot of
- 00:37:02concentration I managed to fix that
- 00:37:05mistake because that was one of the the
- 00:37:07complaints that I used to get from
- 00:37:08people who whom I admired so much they
- 00:37:10used to complain about my time F so I
- 00:37:12addressed
- 00:37:13it I mean it's still not perfect but
- 00:37:17it's way way better than it used to be
- 00:37:19so I'm proof that if you're willing to
- 00:37:22go for it you can do it but like I said
- 00:37:24I had to quote unquote torture myself
- 00:37:27and I went through periods where I did
- 00:37:29have brain fatigue but again I was never
- 00:37:31really depressed I just like I just
- 00:37:33accepted I just said all right I'm
- 00:37:35screwing up I need to practice I need to
- 00:37:38address it because if I don't address it
- 00:37:40then I won't fix it it's just as simple
- 00:37:42as that but boy that I spent hours for
- 00:37:46months for years just to just to fix it
- 00:37:51just to correct it are you guys willing
- 00:37:53to do that I don't know so I think also
- 00:37:57Talent exists on a spectrum some people
- 00:37:59are talented for technique some people
- 00:38:01are talented for rhythm some people are
- 00:38:03talented for harmony for Melody blah
- 00:38:05blah blah blah blah now very very few
- 00:38:08people are kind of talented across all
- 00:38:10Fields like b
- 00:38:13g uh and though so those for those our
- 00:38:16weakness areas then we kind of have to
- 00:38:18find help we have to get some guidance
- 00:38:22somewhere and then we have to put in
- 00:38:24some thought and so it's true that let's
- 00:38:27say someone who is not talented across
- 00:38:29all boards who has weaknesses in Rhythm
- 00:38:32Harmony Melody blah blah blah that
- 00:38:34person will require a lot of help a lot
- 00:38:36of instruction and then that person will
- 00:38:38have to very very strictly follow those
- 00:38:43instructions for 3 years practicing 3 to
- 00:38:46four hours a day are they willing to do
- 00:38:50that and if they're not I don't blame
- 00:38:52them but I do believe that those people
- 00:38:56can be decent and can be good good
- 00:38:58because again I have met people
- 00:39:02uh if I if he doesn't mind me saying
- 00:39:05Zack Marell was one such person he had
- 00:39:06like certain difficulties with quite a
- 00:39:08number of different things but I told
- 00:39:09him right you got to practice this way
- 00:39:11you got to do it very strictly like this
- 00:39:13and he overcame them but again those
- 00:39:16people are the minority he loves music
- 00:39:18that much and he's willing to face the
- 00:39:20facts so if you're willing to face the
- 00:39:23facts and being be honest with yourself
- 00:39:25then yes you you can get good so the
- 00:39:28person who was complaining he is
- 00:39:29definitely right that a lot of people
- 00:39:33there's a reason why people don't manage
- 00:39:37to get
- 00:39:38good um but it's not necessarily Talent
- 00:39:43itself it's just like maybe they don't
- 00:39:46want to they don't want it that badly
- 00:39:48it's causing them too much emotional
- 00:39:51mental damage to to to get good and
- 00:39:55that's important too take care of
- 00:39:56yourself if maybe music being good at
- 00:39:59music or being decent is not for you
- 00:40:02it's it's totally fine because there
- 00:40:03actually there are people there are
- 00:40:04mediocre musicians out there gigging
- 00:40:06they're living happy lives they're
- 00:40:08content with their level that that's
- 00:40:10totally fine too man there's nothing
- 00:40:12wrong with that I'm not making this
- 00:40:13video to scare anyone away to be honest
- 00:40:15but I want to be truthful to be very
- 00:40:17honest I also want to be truthful with
- 00:40:19myself that I really worked so hard and
- 00:40:23I'm very strict with myself when I
- 00:40:26practice and and so that that's how I'm
- 00:40:28being I can be very efficient how I can
- 00:40:30make progress really quickly 2 and 1
- 00:40:33half years ago I spoke almost no
- 00:40:36Japanese but now I get by people think
- 00:40:39that I've been studying longer than I
- 00:40:40have but it's not true I I I haven't
- 00:40:42mastered the language but uh actually
- 00:40:45see I'm decent at Japanese nowhere near
- 00:40:47native definitely not but I could
- 00:40:50actually choose to stop my studies today
- 00:40:52and live a relatively comfortable life
- 00:40:55in Japan I could do almost everything I
- 00:40:58need to do with my current level but I'm
- 00:41:00not satisfied with this level I want to
- 00:41:02go higher get better I told myself I
- 00:41:04want to study another at least another
- 00:41:06two years like really really
- 00:41:09hard so you have to set the bar you have
- 00:41:12to set the limit how far do you want to
- 00:41:14go and how how much are you willing to
- 00:41:17pay the price I've mentioned this as
- 00:41:20well before because uh I've met people
- 00:41:25who have been practicing who say they've
- 00:41:27practicing 2 3 hours a day for 30 years
- 00:41:3140 years plus but they're not
- 00:41:34progressing so I do know this one guy as
- 00:41:37a full-time job as a family he spends
- 00:41:40two hours a day Apparently after work
- 00:41:43practicing and after 30 years his
- 00:41:47playing has not
- 00:41:49changed his playing is exactly the same
- 00:41:5220 years as it was 20 years ago when the
- 00:41:55first time I heard him play as it is
- 00:41:57today 25 years ago exactly the
- 00:42:01same so I think that
- 00:42:05person well I've said this before when
- 00:42:08you grab the
- 00:42:10guitar what is your purpose is it you
- 00:42:13play the guitar for for therapy then if
- 00:42:16that's the case yeah do whatever you
- 00:42:19want don't have to progress you just
- 00:42:20have fun that's your therapy that's your
- 00:42:22hobby you're just enjoying the moment
- 00:42:25but to say that this person is
- 00:42:27practicing would be a lie they're
- 00:42:29wasting their time if their goal was
- 00:42:31actually to reach the next level then
- 00:42:33they've been wasting their time for 25
- 00:42:35years and that's what kind of why I'm
- 00:42:37making this video I don't want you guys
- 00:42:38to waste your time I want you to be
- 00:42:40honest yourselves with yourselves do you
- 00:42:42truly want to progress if you really
- 00:42:44want to progress you should be seeing
- 00:42:46results fairly noticeable results almost
- 00:42:49every month es significant results every
- 00:42:526 months remember 6 months ago I
- 00:42:54couldn't do this
- 00:42:57or things like
- 00:42:58[Music]
- 00:43:03this I couldn't do any of that six
- 00:43:05months ago so you see the difference
- 00:43:07between six months and
- 00:43:09today
- 00:43:11um you need to see differences like that
- 00:43:14every six month if you truly want to
- 00:43:16progress and practicing two hours a
- 00:43:19day that's enough to see some kind of
- 00:43:23difference and there's no difference
- 00:43:24from 25 years ago and today then you're
- 00:43:26doing something very very very wrong and
- 00:43:29that's what it was with me you know it's
- 00:43:30it's a bit frustrating but that's what
- 00:43:32life was I don't come from a musical
- 00:43:34family I didn't have the resources like
- 00:43:37the the natural
- 00:43:39resources to be learning in the best
- 00:43:42environment everything I had to do I had
- 00:43:44to fight for myself out of my own love
- 00:43:47for the
- 00:43:48music so in the beginning when I did
- 00:43:50practice 10 hours a day some of that
- 00:43:54maybe 9 hours of those who probably
- 00:43:58useless um it took a lot of time for me
- 00:44:02to learn how to learn properly lot there
- 00:44:03are a lot of people
- 00:44:05achieving uh in 6 months what took me 5
- 00:44:11years it's
- 00:44:13just a reality that I have to accept but
- 00:44:17that's great I'm very happy that there
- 00:44:19now so so much like uh material
- 00:44:22available to to people around the world
- 00:44:25it makes me really really happy so I
- 00:44:27make these videos to kind of hopefully
- 00:44:30give some of you guys some hope some
- 00:44:32things to think about to hopefully
- 00:44:33inspire you to work hard to accept that
- 00:44:37you have to work hard but you should
- 00:44:40enjoy the process you don't if you don't
- 00:44:42enjoy the process it's totally be it's
- 00:44:44totally fine be honest with yourself
- 00:44:46because I don't want to see you suffer
- 00:44:48from mental health issues because some
- 00:44:50there are some players I'm not going to
- 00:44:51name names like great players who have
- 00:44:54significant uh mental health issues now
- 00:44:57whether they had those mental health
- 00:44:59issues before or they started practicing
- 00:45:03or it happened because they practice so
- 00:45:05much who knows it's a chicken and egg
- 00:45:07kind of thing um because I know that I
- 00:45:10have OCD I'm the kind of guy who gets
- 00:45:12kind of like really upset that's how
- 00:45:14it's easy for me to put in so many hours
- 00:45:17and if you're not OCD that's totally
- 00:45:20fine maybe in the comments you can tell
- 00:45:21me what kind of what your shortterm and
- 00:45:23long terms go like within 3 years I wish
- 00:45:25to be able to do this within 5 years I
- 00:45:27want to do this tell me what your goals
- 00:45:29are your realistic goals let's be
- 00:45:31realistic as well not saying I'm going
- 00:45:32to be the next B but cuz probably if
- 00:45:34you're going to be the next berelli
- 00:45:35you're not you don't need to be watching
- 00:45:37my videos you already have this kind of
- 00:45:39talent you already know how to practice
- 00:45:41correctly but yeah so guys Happy New
- 00:45:45Year thank you so much for supporting my
- 00:45:46channel and see you in
- 00:45:492025 and guess what I didn't faint but I
- 00:45:52need to lie down I'm not feeling well
