00:00:02
hi um this is a PowerPoint over tackling
00:00:06
employment skills with optimism and wit
00:00:08
uh what does that mean optimism and wit
00:00:11
well you'll see as we go throughout I'm
00:00:12
kind of using Ted lasso here as you see
00:00:14
in his believe statement which he has in
00:00:16
his TV series now Ted lasso is a
00:00:19
television show if you haven't seen it
00:00:21
that follows an American football CA
00:00:22
coach who unexpectedly gets hired to
00:00:25
coach a British soccer team despite
00:00:28
having any or little experience with a
00:00:30
sport this this series is very notable
00:00:33
it has a lot of humor a lot of optimism
00:00:35
and the development of its diverse
00:00:36
character cast of characters which how
00:00:38
they interact with each other is really
00:00:40
important to the show we'll look a
00:00:42
little bit about how the career is in
00:00:45
here showing adaptability and learning
00:00:47
Ted lasso embodies adaptability by
00:00:49
embracing a new sport hey culture
00:00:53
interesting and workplace environment we
00:00:55
all have those his willingness to learn
00:00:57
from others and adapt to New Challenges
00:00:59
is a crucial skill in any
00:01:01
career leadership and teamwork is
00:01:03
another thing we learned from Ted his
00:01:05
leadership style characterized by
00:01:07
empathy positivity and encouragement
00:01:10
demonstrates effective team management
00:01:12
and it motivation strategies it's
00:01:14
crucial for leadership roles in any
00:01:16
field resilience positivity this show
00:01:21
definitely emphasizes a resilience in
00:01:23
the SP of setbacks and the importance of
00:01:26
maintaining a positive out Outlook a
00:01:28
vital trait for career longevity and
00:01:32
satisfaction and fourth it gives us
00:01:34
communication and relationships its
00:01:36
effective communication and building
00:01:38
strong relationships are Central themes
00:01:40
reflecting essential skills for Career
00:01:42
Success in collaborative environments
00:01:45
overall Ted lasso offers insights into
00:01:47
the importance of soft skills such as
00:01:49
leadership adaptability interpersonal
00:01:52
relations which are increasingly
00:01:53
recognized as vital for success in in
00:01:55
any career path we have the knowledge
00:01:57
and and skills but do we have this piece
00:02:01
that we need to be employable or to keep
00:02:05
employment Bel isn't just a word it's a
00:02:07
mindset in the in the Ted lasso Series
00:02:09
in the world of Ted lasso it stands as a
00:02:11
beacon kind of like the Batman uh signal
00:02:14
reminding us that faith in ourselves and
00:02:16
others can transform the improbable into
00:02:19
the achievable in careers as on the
00:02:21
soccer field believe challenges us to
00:02:23
look beyond the immediate hurdles and
00:02:25
envision success empowering us to lead
00:02:27
with courage it inspires teamwork and
00:02:29
persevere through challenges it's not
00:02:32
merely about achieving goals but about
00:02:34
creating a culture an environment where
00:02:36
dreams dare to take shape and where
00:02:38
every setback is seen as a setup for
00:02:41
comeback believe is the heart of
00:02:44
resilience the spirit of innovation and
00:02:46
the promise of
00:02:50
growth so what are essential functions
00:02:52
we're going to talk a little bit more
00:02:54
these are definitely the important tasks
00:02:56
or activities that you need to do for
00:02:58
something to work
00:03:00
properly how can it work properly you
00:03:02
need to have those essential functions
00:03:04
for example let's just talk about a
00:03:06
phone more particularly a cell phone uh
00:03:09
that cell phone uh is very essential for
00:03:12
making calls sending texts or taking
00:03:15
pictures not that it doesn't have other
00:03:17
functions to it but these are the
00:03:19
essential now without these things the
00:03:22
phone wouldn't be very useful for most
00:03:24
people cuz that is what we usually using
00:03:26
it for we need to be useful
00:03:30
and employable very important to mention
00:03:32
some of these skills or learn make sure
00:03:34
you know about these skills when going
00:03:36
in for an interview or keeping a job or
00:03:38
just talking with uh other colleagues so
00:03:41
what you need to know is that essential
00:03:43
functions equals
00:03:45
employability the essential functions
00:03:48
I'm going to talk about in this
00:03:49
particular uh PowerPoint are the ones
00:03:52
that are needed uh for health
00:03:54
information professionals okay critical
00:03:57
thinking computer and digit skills
00:04:01
communication skills interpersonal
00:04:04
skills physical
00:04:06
considerations dependable and flexible
00:04:09
and professional attitude these seven
00:04:12
essential functions are very
00:04:14
important uh to every health information
00:04:17
professional and the careers that they
00:04:19
choose well actually the rules that they
00:04:21
choose as
00:04:23
well critical thinking this is where we
00:04:26
abstract and
00:04:27
analyze data possibly or document ation
00:04:30
assess information from all that uh that
00:04:33
we uh analyzed abstracted from solve
00:04:36
some problems possibly and we have to
00:04:38
make some informed decisions so we do
00:04:40
that in in abstracting with uh like in
00:04:43
vital coding information from multiple
00:04:44
provider documentations that's an
00:04:47
essential aspect of the hit and the
00:04:49
medical coding profession we have to
00:04:51
understand organizational policies
00:04:54
accreditation standards joint commission
00:04:57
and official Cod coding guidelines icd10
00:05:00
CPT coding hips medical coding
00:05:03
professionals must be willing to read
00:05:06
study understand and apply coding
00:05:08
guidelines related to their role you've
00:05:10
learned coding but you're going to
00:05:12
continually learn coding there's going
00:05:14
to be continually doing updates so we'll
00:05:15
always have to understand what those are
00:05:17
and how to apply them in our uh coding
00:05:20
and billing uh processes problem solving
00:05:23
that's issues related to data accuracy
00:05:26
probably maybe data retrieval or
00:05:28
information request
00:05:30
it that's a key role of the hit in
00:05:32
medical coding profession we have to be
00:05:34
attentive to detail we've said this
00:05:36
before in the program in documenting and
00:05:39
managing health information that is
00:05:41
crucial for maintaining data accuracy
00:05:44
compliance with regulations and
00:05:45
assisting patient care assuring that the
00:05:47
documentation actually is saying what
00:05:50
the patient had done for them you know
00:05:52
what did the provider do what did the
00:05:54
nurse do um progress notes operative
00:05:57
notes we have to make sure that all
00:05:58
those details are are attended
00:06:02
to so computer and digital
00:06:05
skills we need to be digital literate
00:06:09
okay we know that um but I just really
00:06:12
want to emphasize that this is something
00:06:14
that we all need to understand this is
00:06:16
an essential function this isn't a a bip
00:06:19
part by what's the word I'm looking for
00:06:21
like a
00:06:22
byproduct uh from what we do we use this
00:06:25
when in just about every profession uh
00:06:28
every role in our our uh World digital
00:06:31
literacy that's the ability and skill to
00:06:33
find evaluate utilize share and create
00:06:36
content using information Technologies
00:06:38
and the internet we have to be Adept at
00:06:41
using various software applications such
00:06:43
as the encoder and electronic health
00:06:46
records those are very important things
00:06:48
to understand so technology proficiency
00:06:51
has become increasingly important to the
00:06:52
profession due to the electronic health
00:06:54
record encoders and other Healthcare
00:06:57
technologies that we have and the
00:06:59
professional must have the ability to
00:07:00
troubleshoot technical issues and
00:07:02
communicate well with it teams when
00:07:05
needed we have to be able to talk to our
00:07:07
it team they're are they are our support
00:07:10
to us at all times we don't know
00:07:12
everything we may know some of the how
00:07:14
to use it but we don't know how to fix
00:07:17
it when the computer goes down that's
00:07:19
the IT department and we have to be able
00:07:21
to communicate that well to
00:07:24
them communication skills here's where
00:07:27
we have to be clear and concise we have
00:07:30
to be effective in how we speak in our
00:07:32
oral and our written communication this
00:07:34
supports overall health care processes
00:07:37
and patient care we need to be able to
00:07:39
communicate effective oral and written
00:07:42
communication is essential for hit and
00:07:44
medical clothing professionals as they
00:07:46
are pivotal role in maintaining accurate
00:07:48
patient records facilitating information
00:07:51
exchange within Healthcare teams and
00:07:53
ensure compliance with regulations good
00:07:56
communication ensures the quality
00:07:58
Integrity of patient records and it
00:08:00
supports overall healthare processes and
00:08:02
patient care we need to be definitely
00:08:04
clear and concise communication for hit
00:08:07
and coding professionals is integrated
00:08:09
in their roles with co-workers managers
00:08:13
Physicians administrative officials
00:08:17
patients hit and medical coding
00:08:19
professionals need to be able to
00:08:21
articulate clearly in a variety of
00:08:23
healthcare settings and with various
00:08:25
Healthcare
00:08:27
stakeholders very important
00:08:32
this one is kind of interesting to me uh
00:08:34
the little uh note there with Ted lasso
00:08:36
where he says boy I love meeting
00:08:39
people's moms it's like reading an
00:08:40
instruction manual as to why they're
00:08:42
nuts and it's not always why they're
00:08:44
nuts it's also why they're what the way
00:08:46
they are why they act the way they are
00:08:48
why they do the work the way they do it
00:08:51
uh we have to have those interpersonal
00:08:53
skills uh they contribute to the success
00:08:55
of hit but improve patient care and
00:08:58
overall Healthcare System system
00:08:59
operations so there's a couple things
00:09:01
that come from it so we have to be
00:09:02
active listeners that's integral to our
00:09:05
roles as hit professionals the
00:09:07
professional must attentively listen
00:09:09
collaborate with Healthcare Providers
00:09:11
our colleagues our co-workers and
00:09:13
patients to accurately document medical
00:09:16
information we have to uh have a
00:09:19
conflict resolution that's very
00:09:22
important to have how we can be able to
00:09:24
uh solve problems it's kind of in there
00:09:27
that conf conflict resolution takes
00:09:28
iners skills confidentiality must be
00:09:32
adhered to especially in our hippo world
00:09:35
to protect sensitive patient information
00:09:37
and follow it and the policy regulations
00:09:40
upholding ethical standards and
00:09:42
communication is essential essential I
00:09:45
think we've hit that hard and everybody
00:09:46
talks about Hippa I think the whole
00:09:48
world knows about Hippa now but it's
00:09:50
very important and time management with
00:09:53
effective workload priorities and
00:09:54
deadlines are basic skills for the
00:09:56
professional we have to be able to work
00:09:58
our PRI priorities hit our deadlines
00:10:01
turn up on time be attentive to your
00:10:03
time and
00:10:05
punctuality time management assists the
00:10:07
professional copes with demand of their
00:10:09
roles it uh medical claim submissions
00:10:11
are often held during the prospective
00:10:12
auditing process you don't want to hold
00:10:14
up a claim you don't want to hold up
00:10:15
money and it's important to know how to
00:10:17
work efficiently to minimize whole time
00:10:19
and limit the impact to the
00:10:20
organization's revenue cycle as coders
00:10:23
were very important to the revenue cycle
00:10:24
anytime we're in the revenue uh U realm
00:10:28
we hold up up monies and they don't take
00:10:31
kindly to that so we do have to be
00:10:32
careful and always and that's even kind
00:10:34
to a patient and the organization we
00:10:36
like to get our bills on time I know
00:10:37
that for sure as well and teamwork
00:10:40
here's where we're going to build
00:10:41
relationship it's essential for us to
00:10:43
work closely with a variety of
00:10:44
individuals and teams within Healthcare
00:10:46
to ensure the efficient management of
00:10:49
patient health information and data
00:10:50
working with the doctors or the
00:10:52
providers or the physical therapists or
00:10:53
the nurses we work with a variety of
00:10:56
people so we have to build those
00:10:57
relationships and we have to make sure
00:10:59
that there are positive uh relationships
00:11:03
with them and get to know them it's okay
00:11:05
to find out if they're
00:11:07
nuts learn a little bit of people skills
00:11:09
at this
00:11:12
time okay physical considerations very
00:11:15
important to the a a to be healthy in uh
00:11:19
how we uh do our jobs and now that
00:11:21
sounds weird we're probably not all
00:11:22
thinking about physical but we talk
00:11:23
about it when we're at our desks or
00:11:25
where we're a long time in front of a
00:11:26
computer uh even like with right now I
00:11:29
have blue light uh uh glasses on to help
00:11:32
me with the computer light I sit in
00:11:34
front of a computer most time during the
00:11:36
day even with work and without work so
00:11:39
we primarily work there we need to
00:11:40
maintain good health and ergonomic uh
00:11:43
practices those are crucial to our
00:11:45
well-being and Effectiveness the manual
00:11:47
manual dexterity for occasional handling
00:11:49
of physical documents some people will
00:11:51
still be handling physical documents
00:11:52
some so we have to have we have to be
00:11:55
ready for that so we have to make sure
00:11:56
we can do that and mobility in your work
00:11:59
Place accessibility whether it's at home
00:12:01
or at a workstation in your office we
00:12:03
need to be able to move around an office
00:12:05
or a hospital or even in our rooms
00:12:07
wherever we're doing our work so that we
00:12:09
can do the work that we're supposed to I
00:12:11
noted again health records on here
00:12:13
because some places still have a little
00:12:15
bit of movement with health records it's
00:12:17
not all electronic it's mostly
00:12:19
electronic but it's not all electronic
00:12:22
so some of the things we need to
00:12:23
remember uh for ergonomics is that uh
00:12:25
that we spend a lot of time again like I
00:12:27
mentioned at computers and it's
00:12:28
important to keep posture and ergonomic
00:12:31
practices to avoid strain and discomfort
00:12:33
on our back on our wrists on my eyes
00:12:37
manual dexterity is needed to
00:12:38
occasionally handle any physical
00:12:40
documents so it's helpful when you're
00:12:42
sorting filing or scanning documents you
00:12:45
have to be able to do that we may be
00:12:46
putting things into the electronic
00:12:48
record Mobility that's going to be
00:12:50
needed so you can again like I mentioned
00:12:51
so you can move around the office um uh
00:12:54
you have to be able to be physical
00:12:56
mobile within the workplace when
00:12:57
necessary so we can't uh do a lot of our
00:13:00
work if we're not um set up to do them
00:13:03
well in our
00:13:07
workstations and we have to be
00:13:09
dependable and flexible Healthcare
00:13:11
environments are Dynamic there's
00:13:13
evolving technology all the time
00:13:14
software updates all these things we
00:13:16
have to be flexible to these uh
00:13:19
technological uh advances let's say so
00:13:22
we have to contribute to the managing of
00:13:24
healthcare data and information
00:13:26
effectively we also have to be mentally
00:13:28
flexible so not just just physically but
00:13:30
mentally flexible so adaptability is
00:13:32
part of this that is adaptability to a
00:13:34
changing set or of priorities our
00:13:36
priorities could change uh the
00:13:38
priorities could change in the
00:13:39
organization which means we have to
00:13:40
change what we do in our job and we have
00:13:42
to adapt to it our job roles are
00:13:44
constantly changing and it's important
00:13:46
not to be siloed into one role you could
00:13:49
be an outpatient coder uh but then all
00:13:51
of a sudden they may need impatient
00:13:53
coders in their in the organization and
00:13:55
so you may have to uh adapt to being an
00:13:58
imp coder you would have to learn more
00:14:01
so uh on how to uh do that role you'd
00:14:05
have to be Dependable this includes
00:14:06
meeting your deadlines such as coding a
00:14:08
billing submissions we have to get those
00:14:10
done we have to be Dependable
00:14:12
professionals consistently meeting
00:14:14
deadlines ensuring accurate billing for
00:14:16
timely reimbursement in addition to
00:14:18
ensuring a complete medical role for
00:14:20
some of our uh hit professionals some of
00:14:23
us have to assure that that medical
00:14:25
record is accurate and up toate we have
00:14:27
to be flexible so to our are changing
00:14:29
roles or tasks it's an active attribute
00:14:31
of the hit and medical coding
00:14:33
professional so flexibility is
00:14:35
especially crucial when there is an
00:14:37
inundation of patients let's just say a
00:14:39
big census in a hospital a lot of people
00:14:41
are coming in or your clinic is seeing
00:14:42
more uh patients Co is a great example
00:14:45
of this we had a lot more patients
00:14:47
coming in with covid type related
00:14:49
situations so we were inundated with a
00:14:52
lot of coding and getting those patients
00:14:54
taken care of and getting that record uh
00:14:57
complete so uh we have to make sure it's
00:14:59
done and then when we have low sensus or
00:15:02
low things we have to adapt to that too
00:15:04
as well so we are always adapting and
00:15:06
being flexible to uh uh the census we're
00:15:11
flexible to a lot of things that we do
00:15:13
in our job so we have to work with data
00:15:15
management and coordination uh and
00:15:17
ensuring the continuity of care
00:15:19
especially for all this we have to
00:15:20
always make sure that our patients are
00:15:22
getting the most upto-date records and
00:15:24
billing information so that they can be
00:15:26
continued for care say at a specialist
00:15:28
or to to pay for their insurance needs
00:15:30
so we are always having to make sure
00:15:32
that uh their care is taken care of
00:15:34
whether it's financially or physically
00:15:37
we kind of forget the financial part
00:15:39
sometimes so I think that's very
00:15:40
important to always remember I kind of
00:15:42
talked a little bit about change and
00:15:44
here's a little bit a little snippet
00:15:45
from Ted lasso well again as you could
00:15:47
tell one of my favorites he just makes
00:15:49
my heart melt and he says most of the
00:15:51
time change is a good thing Embrace
00:15:54
change be brave I've listened to a
00:15:56
speaker recently who said you have to be
00:15:58
brave for change it's not for the weak
00:16:01
of heart uh and it could be a simple
00:16:03
change that disrupts our lives in in the
00:16:05
work we do so demonstrate at a high
00:16:08
level in all action interactions with
00:16:09
your patients your colleagues your
00:16:11
Healthcare Providers I think I've
00:16:13
mentioned that that a professional
00:16:15
attitude includes includes that you're
00:16:17
punctual that you get those projects
00:16:18
done uh that you're respectful you have
00:16:21
respectful communication I know we
00:16:22
pushed that a whole lot in this program
00:16:24
but respectful communication is very
00:16:25
important and a positive attitude is
00:16:28
very important uh things can get us down
00:16:30
um I know when I went to school I was
00:16:33
doing 40 to 50 hour work weeks I was
00:16:35
going to school full-time and I had
00:16:37
family to take care of um I had to have
00:16:39
a positive attitude through those whole
00:16:40
things to get through a variety of uh
00:16:44
lifetime moments okay so it's not only
00:16:48
important for your individual success
00:16:51
it's also for maintaining and Trust of
00:16:53
the organization it reflects a
00:16:55
commitment to Excellence and ethical
00:16:57
conduct in the healthcare cting we're
00:16:58
doing what's right um we have to we have
00:17:02
to really do what's right and I know
00:17:04
that's very difficult when we when we
00:17:07
have um challenges in our lives but you
00:17:10
can do it so we have to have that
00:17:11
commitment to that that professionalism
00:17:13
so uh stay stay cool and stay positive
00:17:18
that's all I can say be a Ted lasso so
00:17:20
what are my final tips and uh takeaways
00:17:23
well integration of all these essential
00:17:24
functions that we mentioned the critical
00:17:26
thinking the uh dependability the the
00:17:29
professional attitude everything that
00:17:30
you need to have to be an employable
00:17:34
person and someone they will keep on the
00:17:36
job and help Advance you in your career
00:17:39
you have to be professional at all times
00:17:41
and this is just one of the ways that
00:17:42
you have to do it using your essential
00:17:44
functions so believe which we mentioned
00:17:47
at the beginning believe that you can do
00:17:49
this believe in your career advancement
00:17:51
and become the best hit professional you
00:17:53
