00:00:00
when I got in the car I noticed this
00:00:01
right away most of you are probably
00:00:03
seeing red flags already so guys in
00:00:04
today's video we've got a brand new car
00:00:06
to look at a brand new customer for me
00:00:08
this is a 2017 Outback 2.5i limited and
00:00:11
we don't know the service history of the
00:00:13
car we've never seen this car before so
00:00:14
we're going to do a full inspection
00:00:15
front to back as a courtesy to this
00:00:18
customer but we're going to address two
00:00:19
main concerns that they have the first
00:00:21
one you might see is going to be
00:00:23
something dealing with the cooling
00:00:24
system which is they think they might
00:00:26
have a crack cylinder head or a head
00:00:28
gasket issue based on uh someone saying
00:00:31
they had a bunch of white smoke coming
00:00:32
out of their tailpipe so we're going to
00:00:34
diagnose and see if there's a head
00:00:35
gasket concern with this car the second
00:00:38
major concern was they were feeling like
00:00:40
the car was holding back it wasn't
00:00:42
accelerating the way it should and just
00:00:44
felt sluggish so we're going to look
00:00:45
into those two main concerns and do a
00:00:47
full inspection on this car with that
00:00:49
said let's go ahead and dive into
00:00:52
[Music]
00:00:58
it
00:01:01
so guys when the customer brought me the
00:01:02
car there were two main concerns one was
00:01:05
a possible cracked cylinder head head
00:01:07
gasket issue Etc the other was an issue
00:01:12
where they felt like the car was holding
00:01:14
back it wasn't accelerating like it was
00:01:15
they thought maybe there was an issue
00:01:17
with the CVT never underestimate a
00:01:20
visual inspection when I got in the car
00:01:22
I noticed this right away most of you
00:01:24
are probably seeing red flags already
00:01:26
double stack floor mats you never ever
00:01:28
want to put a floor mat over a existing
00:01:31
Factory floor mat that a recipe for
00:01:33
disaster so no kind of belate whatsoever
00:01:36
to the customer so many people don't
00:01:38
realize this and how this is a safety
00:01:40
issue but this is what I found I went on
00:01:44
test drive of course to confirm the
00:01:46
result but uh as I was driving it I knew
00:01:49
exactly what the issue was it felt like
00:01:51
the car wouldn't accelerate well the
00:01:54
throttle response was low and it was due
00:01:55
to this this secondary floor mat on top
00:01:59
of the factory floor mat this is what
00:02:01
happens they slide and they jam up under
00:02:03
your pedals luckily it only jammed up
00:02:05
under the gas pedal on this car which is
00:02:07
dangerous nonetheless if you're trying
00:02:09
to pull out in front of somebody or
00:02:10
something like that and can't accelerate
00:02:12
that's dangerous but the real danger
00:02:15
comes in if it jams up behind your brake
00:02:17
pedal and you cannot break that is not
00:02:20
something you want to do I'm going to
00:02:21
remove this and uh Shake all the sand
00:02:24
and stuff out of it probably back out
00:02:26
this and put it somewhere else if the
00:02:28
customer wants to put it back in under
00:02:31
my advisement not to that's on them but
00:02:33
I won't have this in here after I've
00:02:36
worked on it it's too much of a
00:02:38
liability in case slid back under there
00:02:41
and they had an issue and had an
00:02:42
accident I'm not going to have that on
00:02:44
me so I'm going to remove this correct
00:02:46
that issue I slid it back during the
00:02:48
test drive and confirmed that that was
00:02:50
the issue that it was uh the floor mat
00:02:53
hanging up not allowing the gas pedal to
00:02:54
move freely but I just stuffed it back
00:02:57
under here to show you guys exactly what
00:02:58
it looked like when I found it so again
00:03:01
never double stack floor mats it's
00:03:04
extremely dangerous and this is the
00:03:05
reason why because it'll slide on that
00:03:08
other mat and get hung up under your gas
00:03:11
pedal and your brake pedal and you don't
00:03:13
want to lose your ability to stop the
00:03:16
car so everything under the hood is
00:03:18
pretty clean no oil leaks really visible
00:03:21
from the top side which you'd expect for
00:03:22
100,000 mile 2017 we got a little bit of
00:03:26
corrosion and build up on the battery
00:03:27
that needs to be cleaned up uh belt
00:03:29
hoses everything looks pretty dagam good
00:03:31
nothing is jumping out at me as anything
00:03:34
concerning uh the belt is a little bit
00:03:36
old but there isn't any cracking or
00:03:39
fraying on it just the grooves are
00:03:41
getting kind of deep and uh probably is
00:03:44
the original belt uh these belts are
00:03:46
pretty good at holding up to some
00:03:48
mileage and some age from Subaru so I'll
00:03:50
ask the customer if they know when the
00:03:52
last time the belt was replaced and if
00:03:54
they don't know I will put it on the
00:03:56
list of recommendations looking at the
00:03:58
PCV h hose and valve PCV hose is hard as
00:04:01
a rock it would break if I took it off
00:04:04
of there so definitely going to
00:04:05
recommend a PCV valve and PCV hose have
00:04:10
not pulled off the intake duck but I can
00:04:12
just about guarantee you this car needs
00:04:14
a throttle body cleaning I will take
00:04:17
that off look at that put that on the
00:04:19
list of uh Services advised other than
00:04:23
that nothing else really jumping out on
00:04:25
the top side here so we're going to go
00:04:27
ahead and pull out a spark plug jump in
00:04:31
here and uh see if we got any oil on the
00:04:34
uh coil packs any kind of leakage from
00:04:36
the spark plug tube seals and uh look at
00:04:39
the state of the spark plugs I believe
00:04:41
they bought the car at 60 70,000 mies
00:04:45
and haven't done any major Services
00:04:47
since then but apparently the dealer
00:04:49
they bought it from did the 60,000 Mi
00:04:51
service so we're just going off of their
00:04:54
word on that so check the coolant
00:04:56
coolant is a little low customer stated
00:04:59
three they think that they have a
00:05:00
cracked head or a head gasket issue is
00:05:02
because they've had to add some coolant
00:05:04
and they did see some white smoke out
00:05:06
the tailpipe I don't know if they were
00:05:08
just seeing regular condensation
00:05:11
starting it on a cold day or a humid day
00:05:14
or if it was really like churning out a
00:05:16
ton of white smoke like it was drinking
00:05:18
coolant uh there's no contamination
00:05:21
cross contamination I've seen between
00:05:22
the oil and the coolant nothing really
00:05:24
scuzzy looking in the uh Reservoir or
00:05:27
under the cap nothing in the oil that's
00:05:30
alarming so just going to go ahead and
00:05:34
uh skip the
00:05:37
uh cylinder leakage test and we'll just
00:05:40
put a l spill free funnel in here run
00:05:42
the car up the temp and see if we got
00:05:43
any bubbling in the radiator should be
00:05:47
pretty conclusive there all right guys
00:05:49
so we've got a little bit more pulled
00:05:50
apart in the engine bay a little bit
00:05:52
more probing than a normal inspection uh
00:05:55
noted we have a dirty air filter going
00:05:58
to recommend replacement of of the
00:06:00
engine air filter went ahead and pulled
00:06:03
out one of the spark plugs we had oil
00:06:07
all over the end of the coil I'll put a
00:06:09
picture in of that we had oil sitting at
00:06:13
the edge of the bar for the spark plug
00:06:17
pull spark plug out oil on the spark
00:06:20
plug oil on the spark plug
00:06:23
socket uh here's a quick look at that
00:06:27
spark plug try to put in some steel
00:06:29
pitch is a little bit closer uh check
00:06:31
the Gap not too worn down so they're
00:06:35
probably replaced at 60,000 mies or
00:06:37
around about uh we're at 113,000 Mi now
00:06:41
so uh we're closing in on another 60,000
00:06:43
Mi so might go ahead and recommend these
00:06:46
ngks uh to be replaced uh might as well
00:06:49
if we're going to go ahead and pull
00:06:51
apart the uh pull the coils out and do
00:06:56
the cam cover reseal here because those
00:06:58
spark plug tube seals are leaking might
00:07:00
as well do it all at once save on the
00:07:02
labor just throw in the parts for those
00:07:05
spark plugs uh but other than that we're
00:07:07
going to put this back together continue
00:07:09
our inspection on the car and uh get
00:07:12
underneath see if we see any oil leaks
00:07:14
from the cam carriers timing chain uh
00:07:16
cover all that kind of stuff and there's
00:07:18
our confirmation on throttle body
00:07:20
needing to be clean we got a ridge of
00:07:21
carbon right there on the outside of the
00:07:23
butterfly all right guys check on the
00:07:25
cabin air filter I'm assuming it's going
00:07:27
to be bad from that pine needle already
00:07:30
see and yeah she's pretty bad going to
00:07:34
advise cabin air filter replacement all
00:07:37
right guys now we're doing our visual
00:07:38
inspection underneath the front of the
00:07:40
car looking at the bottom of the engine
00:07:42
it is pren it is dry no leaks no nothing
00:07:46
perfect exactly what you want to see cam
00:07:49
carriers dries a bone nothing at the
00:07:52
head gasket line just perfect exactly
00:07:56
what you want to see under here no
00:07:58
issues with with the engine no issues
00:08:01
with the front differential transmission
00:08:03
everything's bone dry no leakage we do
00:08:05
have some uh vegetation and a little bit
00:08:07
of mud but uh we live out in the country
00:08:09
so it's expected everything looks great
00:08:11
with the ball joint uh CD axle tie rod
00:08:15
in uh sway bar in links but I'll Jack It
00:08:18
Up and Shake the tires make sure there's
00:08:20
nothing going on there during the test
00:08:22
drive I did notice that one or both of
00:08:24
the rear wheel bearings are making noise
00:08:27
uh we'll try to figure out exactly which
00:08:29
side it is whether it's passenger side
00:08:31
or driver side but other than that
00:08:33
everything's looking great on this car
00:08:35
which you'd expect if it only have
00:08:37
13,000 mil on it there shouldn't be any
00:08:39
leaks or any issues going on under here
00:08:42
so let's go ahead and get into the back
00:08:43
and see if we can see
00:08:45
anything uh you know out of place back
00:08:47
there yeah these uh front brake pads are
00:08:51
getting really really low uh very much
00:08:54
near the end of life so we'll be
00:08:56
recommending front brakes as well all
00:08:58
right guys onto the rear of the vehicle
00:09:00
and everything looks great back here no
00:09:02
rust no corrosion the exhaust system is
00:09:05
in great shape with no rust no leaking
00:09:07
axle seals no torn boots on the CV
00:09:12
axles all the Fasteners are tight no
00:09:16
broken connectors on the electric uh
00:09:17
rear calipers bushings all tight ball
00:09:22
joint tight up there everything's
00:09:24
good just letting you see I already
00:09:27
checked it over before I started filming
00:09:28
this clip
00:09:30
differential bushings just you know
00:09:31
everything's the way it should be based
00:09:33
on mileage and the lack of service
00:09:36
information going to advise a rear
00:09:37
differential uh service a front
00:09:40
differential service and a CVT fluid
00:09:43
service so uh going to add those to the
00:09:45
list we'll check the rear brakes and
00:09:47
pretty much be wrapped up with this
00:09:48
inspection so rear brake inspection on
00:09:50
these is much easier through the wheel
00:09:53
we're about 50% maybe 40% wear on the
00:09:56
brake pad so not as bad as the front but
00:09:58
uh still going to make note of that for
00:10:00
the customer so we're going to go ahead
00:10:01
now and put that L spill free funnel in
00:10:04
the radiator run the car up to
00:10:05
temperature and check for any bubbling
00:10:06
to see if we have a head gasket issue or
00:10:08
not all right guys so we've got the L
00:10:09
Spiel free funnel installed we're going
00:10:11
to run this car up to temperature and
00:10:13
check for any bubbling in our cooling
00:10:15
system so guys we've been running for
00:10:17
quite a while now we're not quite up to
00:10:19
full operational temperature but no
00:10:20
bubbling whatsoever pretty much
00:10:23
confirming there's no combustion gases
00:10:25
getting into the cooling system we'll
00:10:26
let the thermostat open and fully
00:10:28
confirm that there's nothing going on
00:10:30
here but I didn't think there was there
00:10:31
was no issue with overheating or
00:10:33
anything uh they just had to add a
00:10:35
little bit of coolant into the reservoir
00:10:37
sporadically which is kind of normal
00:10:39
some of it evaporates off some of it
00:10:42
just gets lost through time uh but again
00:10:46
the main thing here is the f-s series
00:10:48
engine doesn't have head gasket issues
00:10:50
as a rule compared to the older Singler
00:10:52
over head Cam and dual overhead cam
00:10:54
naturally aspirated 2.5
00:10:56
ejs and uh you know it's only got
00:10:59
113,000 Mi I wouldn't expect to see any
00:11:01
kind of head gasket issue without some
00:11:03
kind of catastrophic failure of the
00:11:05
cooling system like a blown radiator
00:11:07
blowing right your hose running the car
00:11:08
with no coolant and overheating it and
00:11:10
cooking the head gaskets that's about
00:11:12
the only place you'll see those head
00:11:13
gaskets fail this new and this low of
00:11:16
mileage especially on the f-s series
00:11:17
engine so again we're going to let it
00:11:19
get up the temperature but looks like
00:11:21
we're AOK here looks like they just need
00:11:23
some routine service and maintenance
00:11:24
called up uh the front brakes rear
00:11:27
brakes getting closed P of the hose some
00:11:30
filters maybe a belt and uh Services of
00:11:33
the front rear differential and the CVT
00:11:36
fluid and they should be good to go
00:11:37
aside from the spark plug tube seals and
00:11:39
a set of plugs while we're in there so
00:11:42
uh we'll get back to you confirmed 100%
00:11:45
on this and we get it fully up to
00:11:46
temperature but looks like this customer
00:11:48
is in the clear and not going to have a
00:11:50
huge repair bill for this 2017 Outback
00:11:53
so guys we are up to operational
00:11:54
temperature thermostat has opened and
00:11:56
closed several times we're probably
00:11:58
going to see see some bubbling now
00:12:00
because the fluid is getting close to
00:12:02
the boiling point but there hasn't been
00:12:04
any bubbling anything going on otherwise
00:12:07
with the cooling system pretty sure we
00:12:10
can 100% confirm there are no head
00:12:13
gasket issues on this car there isn't a
00:12:15
cracked head on this car we're good to
00:12:17
go again just wanted to confirm that
00:12:20
with this test so one last service I'm
00:12:22
going to put on the list is a cooling
00:12:24
system service cuz it just occurred to
00:12:25
me that with 113,000 Mi on this car and
00:12:29
the fact that they probably haven't
00:12:30
serviced the cooling system since they
00:12:32
bought it uh this stuff is good but it's
00:12:34
only good for 10 years or 100,000 mil
00:12:36
according to Subaru 8 years 80,000 mi in
00:12:38
my opinion and we're well past that so
00:12:40
we need to do a cooling system service
00:12:42
which is Flushing out the old coolant
00:12:44
going ahead while we have the coolant
00:12:46
drained out replacing the thermostat
00:12:49
both of the thermostats the one for the
00:12:50
CVT and the one for the engine and
00:12:52
putting some new fresh Subaru super
00:12:54
coolant in the cooling system so I'm
00:12:56
going to put that down on the list of
00:12:57
recommended services as well because we
00:12:59
don't want to develop a head gasket
00:13:01
issue due to neglect of our cooling
00:13:03
system there you go guys thank you so
00:13:05
much for watching hope you enjoyed the
00:13:07
video I'll see you all in the next one
00:13:10
with maybe some more videos on what
00:13:11
services the customer decided to pick
00:13:13
and do to this
00:13:20
[Music]
00:13:27
car
00:13:33
come
