00:00:11
it is actually much harder to unlearn a
00:00:14
bad practice than to learn it in the
00:00:16
first place and you might think that
00:00:19
just sounds like something that you read
00:00:20
un rded but this is actually a well
00:00:23
documented part of learning new skills
00:00:25
taking the time to master the basics
00:00:29
goes a long way that's the case for
00:00:31
learning an instrument of sport how to
00:00:34
drive or how to draw which is my case I
00:00:39
am a self teing artist in the process of
00:00:43
learning how to draw by making my own
00:00:46
DIY art school with all the free drawing
00:00:50
advice that I can find online and today
00:00:52
I want to tell you exactly how I took
00:00:54
this Back to Basics approach quite
00:00:58
seriously and Drew only lines and basic
00:01:01
shapes every single day for a full month
00:01:04
I'll tell you why I did it how I did it
00:01:07
everything that I've learned and how
00:01:10
much of an amazing experience this was
00:01:13
for me just not really for the reasons I
00:01:15
was expecting it to
00:01:20
be the thought process behind drawing
00:01:22
lines and shapes a bunch of times makes
00:01:24
a lot of sense drawings are composed of
00:01:27
those so if you can make good shapes and
00:01:29
make good lines lines that's just going
00:01:31
to give your drawings a solid foundation
00:01:33
and that is what many teachers out there
00:01:35
recommend that you focus on when
00:01:37
starting out on your drawing Journey
00:01:39
sounds simple enough sign me up I am
00:01:42
doing it for a full month and the
00:01:44
results of that show
00:01:46
that I've improved I made a lot of
00:01:50
progress by practicing something every
00:01:52
day which tends to be a thing that
00:01:54
happens which in itself is pretty
00:01:57
amazing but personally I don't think the
00:02:00
improving is the most impressive part of
00:02:03
the story and I am much more interested
00:02:05
in diving into the how the hell did I
00:02:07
possibly manage to do that for 30 days
00:02:10
that sh looks
00:02:12
[Music]
00:02:18
boring telling a creative person that is
00:02:21
just starting out in that state of
00:02:24
excitement and butterflies to just sit
00:02:27
around and draw
00:02:30
lines like that's that's evil why would
00:02:35
you do that who hurt you sounds boring
00:02:37
and it looks boring so it's one of those
00:02:39
things that are just really hard to
00:02:42
recommend to someone like weightlifting
00:02:44
or season one of Doctor Who but also
00:02:47
when you get it you get it so I am here
00:02:50
today to make a case for this experiment
00:02:52
because being on the other side now I
00:02:54
can see how much value this had for me
00:02:58
from the very start because along with
00:03:00
making better lines I was actually
00:03:03
learning five big I would argue life
00:03:07
lessons that I had no idea that I would
00:03:09
be signing up for and that made the
00:03:12
whole experience very much worth
00:03:17
it I know that it looks like it'll be a
00:03:20
drag to fill up these pages but really
00:03:24
the time that I spent practicing became
00:03:26
like my favorite part of each day making
00:03:29
these shapes just feels good you don't
00:03:33
have to think about anything you just
00:03:35
have to move your arm over and over in
00:03:38
this specific way and it's nice and it's
00:03:41
relaxing and I think drawing can in
00:03:43
general have this effect on people but
00:03:47
as a beginner who's just constantly
00:03:49
trying to draw things that are pretty
00:03:52
above my league that can also bring a
00:03:54
lot of stress and frustration to the
00:03:56
experience a lot of times but
00:04:01
lines
00:04:03
circles like that's a no-brainer I can
00:04:06
do that it was a break from everything
00:04:09
else when I could get into this
00:04:10
meditative space and I was usually just
00:04:14
looking forward to it the next
00:04:18
day have you ever had a moment when
00:04:20
you're like I feel like drawing
00:04:22
something now what should I draw and
00:04:25
then you spend 40 minutes looking for
00:04:26
the perfect reference until you get so
00:04:29
overwhelmed that you end up not drawing
00:04:30
anything at
00:04:32
all well that is the beauty of exercises
00:04:36
they have this power of I am just going
00:04:39
to focus on improving my skills for a
00:04:41
little bit without all
00:04:43
the baggage and that can be liberating
00:04:46
it's fun you make a lot of progress and
00:04:49
then when you do go to actually draw a
00:04:52
subject you see how they actually did
00:04:55
really help maybe at this point I'm just
00:04:58
ere explaining how EX exercises work but
00:05:00
also maybe it's that thing that it's
00:05:02
worth being reminded of from time to
00:05:05
time it is okay to just do exercises for
00:05:09
a little
00:05:12
while and not only it's okay and it
00:05:16
feels good it actually looks pretty good
00:05:20
like it's not a put it up on your wall
00:05:23
kind of good but it's also not bad in
00:05:25
the beginning when I was thinking about
00:05:27
making this video I thought that they
00:05:28
might look a little too bland and ugly
00:05:32
for it but I actually quite liked how
00:05:36
they turn out with time I started to see
00:05:38
that I was like still being creative
00:05:41
with the spreads with like the
00:05:43
arrangement of things and the different
00:05:45
sizes and contrasts and trying to find
00:05:48
clever ways to fill up the page with
00:05:51
each page I was making creative
00:05:54
decisions and once they started to like
00:05:57
come together and pile up I saw that
00:06:00
they were actually looking pretty nice
00:06:02
they started to work well with each
00:06:04
other it's like a visual trace of my
00:06:07
growth and I think that they make like a
00:06:11
really nice
00:06:15
set around like day 10 I started to feel
00:06:19
like something magical was happening in
00:06:22
my brain I was drawing these simple
00:06:24
basic shapes every day and essentially
00:06:28
that became like the only thing that I
00:06:29
could confidently say that I knew how to
00:06:32
draw So then whenever I went and triy to
00:06:35
draw something else my brain would just
00:06:38
immediately jump to try and find those
00:06:41
shapes that I was comfortable with and
00:06:44
apparently that's like a master skill to
00:06:47
have to be able to draw well being able
00:06:49
to look at things and break them down
00:06:51
into their most simple basic shapes just
00:06:55
demystifies and simplifies the subject
00:06:59
and just makes it so much easier to draw
00:07:02
it that's like drawing one onone so if
00:07:05
you can like only draw that for now like
00:07:08
you see how that's a life
00:07:12
hack and when I say that I got good at
00:07:16
drawing these shapes don't think that
00:07:18
like by day 15 I could make the perfect
00:07:20
circle with my eyes closed because that
00:07:24
is not the case I wasn't nailing every
00:07:27
single line or getting closer to
00:07:29
Perfection that would probably take many
00:07:32
years and also completely miss the point
00:07:35
because even the teachers during these
00:07:37
lessons weren't getting it right every
00:07:40
single time cuz it's not about that
00:07:41
these are exercises to warm up and
00:07:45
loosen up and get better not to be
00:07:49
perfect I would argue there isn't even
00:07:51
like an end result to achieve some days
00:07:54
you're doing better than others you're
00:07:56
slowly seeing your improvement but it's
00:07:59
all about the practice the action of
00:08:02
showing up and making something so for
00:08:06
all of you perfectionists out
00:08:10
there seems like it's a valuable lesson
00:08:12
to learn very conveniently all the
00:08:15
lessons that I took and all the
00:08:17
exercises that I made are compiled in
00:08:19
this notion page with links and notes
00:08:23
and whatnot and anyone is welcome to
00:08:26
access that so I will just quickly rapid
00:08:28
fire what I feel like are the most
00:08:31
important things that I learned during
00:08:33
this month and that I would highly
00:08:34
recommend to people who want to give
00:08:36
this a try learn the different ways that
00:08:39
you can grip the pencil and the kinds of
00:08:42
marks that each grip makes practice
00:08:45
drawing from your shoulder and your
00:08:47
elbow to go beyond just drawing from
00:08:50
your wrists get comfortable with the
00:08:52
range of marks that the pencil makes
00:08:55
when you alter its angle and its
00:08:58
pressure practice Mak making a bunch of
00:09:01
straight lines varying Direction and
00:09:04
size and angles same thing for curved
00:09:06
lines just go crazy short long left
00:09:10
right up down every possible way learn
00:09:13
about the ghosting method and how to
00:09:15
build up your drawing by starting with
00:09:17
very light and faint marks I especially
00:09:21
use this to practice making circles I do
00:09:26
not even know how many circles and ovals
00:09:30
I made just like just just make a lot of
00:09:34
them and really practice making all the
00:09:36
basic shapes squares triangles
00:09:38
rectangles because these are the
00:09:40
building blocks of drawing of course
00:09:43
start training your eye to see those
00:09:45
shapes all around and practice breaking
00:09:48
down some reference pictures into those
00:09:51
and along with all of that I always try
00:09:53
to squeeze in making the same exercises
00:09:57
with a pen so I could get better with
00:10:00
inking and also as someone with deep
00:10:03
commitment issues to just try and
00:10:05
overall be less afraid of drawing with a
00:10:12
pen and in case you are actually
00:10:16
considering doing this I I think it's
00:10:18
important to note that while this
00:10:22
studying this thing for 30 days was a
00:10:26
very good and successful experiment for
00:10:29
me me it is also literally just a random
00:10:33
idea that I had because like that's what
00:10:36
people do on YouTube I guess like there
00:10:38
isn't much of a base for this amount of
00:10:41
days as far as I know and I do think
00:10:46
that if I were to do this again 30 days
00:10:49
is just a long ass time the same thing
00:10:51
can be learned in a much shorter amount
00:10:54
of time and then the practice I think
00:10:58
can maybe be incorporated as warm-up
00:11:00
exercises or some pages from time to
00:11:03
time but not
00:11:05
necessarily days of intense practice
00:11:08
like I did because remember drawing it's
00:11:12
just scribbling things on paper it's
00:11:15
supposed to be fun okay it is not about
00:11:19
complicating it it is literally Child's
00:11:23
Play so let's just collectively try to
00:11:26
not adult the fun out of drawing just
00:11:31
have a good time do your best and
00:11:34
remember to be patient and be kind to
00:11:37
yourself and thank you so much for
00:11:39
making this far into the video I will
00:11:42
see you next time
