Timeline
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

- 00:00:00hey guys chris fix here and today i'm
- 00:00:02going to show you how to repair a deep
- 00:00:04scratch in your car's paintwork you can
- 00:00:06see right here we have a really deep
- 00:00:08scratch that goes across the entire
- 00:00:10fender which was from somebody who keyed
- 00:00:12the car they vandalized it now if you
- 00:00:14have a deep scratch cause somebody keyed
- 00:00:16the car because a shopping cart hit it
- 00:00:17because you scraped up against something
- 00:00:19or somebody scraped up against you
- 00:00:21whatever the deep scratch was caused by
- 00:00:23i'm gonna show you how to repair it
- 00:00:25inexpensively using one of these
- 00:00:27automotive paint pens now a paint pen
- 00:00:29like this is around 15 to 20 dollars and
- 00:00:31i want you to keep that in mind because
- 00:00:33this isn't gonna get you a hundred
- 00:00:34percent perfect results it's not going
- 00:00:36to be like if they re-sprayed the panel
- 00:00:38the best way to repair this would be to
- 00:00:39sand the entire panel down to remove the
- 00:00:41scratch and then respray and feather and
- 00:00:44blend your paintwork into the adjacent
- 00:00:46panels now doing all that paint work
- 00:00:47comes at a cost i actually went out and
- 00:00:49got a quote just to see how much it
- 00:00:51would cost to fix this panel only this
- 00:00:53panel with this scratch and the total
- 00:00:55cost would be
- 00:00:57775 dollars to do this properly at a
- 00:01:00body shop now depending on what car you
- 00:01:02drive in your situation you might not
- 00:01:03want to spend all that money to make
- 00:01:05this a perfect repair so instead i'm
- 00:01:07going to show you how to repair it at
- 00:01:09home using one of these paint pens and
- 00:01:11get results that are good enough get
- 00:01:13results that are they're pretty good
- 00:01:14like you're gonna stand from right about
- 00:01:15here two three feet away and you're not
- 00:01:17gonna notice that this is damaged the
- 00:01:19only way to notice its damage is if you
- 00:01:21get up close or you catch it in a
- 00:01:22certain light and you look for that
- 00:01:24scratch otherwise if you stand back here
- 00:01:26you wouldn't even be able to tell wonder
- 00:01:28what let me show you here's the panel
- 00:01:30right now before we repair it you could
- 00:01:32easily see the deep large scratch and
- 00:01:34here's the same panel after we repair it
- 00:01:36with the touch-up paint the scratch is
- 00:01:38gone and the panel looks great so i
- 00:01:40think that gives you a really good idea
- 00:01:41of the results you can expect after
- 00:01:43you're done watching this video and
- 00:01:44trying it for yourself using the tips
- 00:01:46and tricks i show you this is gonna go
- 00:01:48above and beyond everything you've seen
- 00:01:50i'm gonna show you stuff on how to get
- 00:01:52this basically to disappear and we're
- 00:01:54going to be doing that with four simple
- 00:01:55steps first we need to clean the entire
- 00:01:57panel to remove any dirt and oils so we
- 00:02:00don't contaminate the scratch the second
- 00:02:02step is to prep the deep scratch by
- 00:02:04removing any and all rust and lightly
- 00:02:06sanding the scratch to get it ready for
- 00:02:08the next step the third step which is
- 00:02:10our paint step this is where we're gonna
- 00:02:11use a simple touch-up pen to fill the
- 00:02:13scratch with paint and add a layer of
- 00:02:15clear coat and finally the fourth step
- 00:02:18is the blending step this is where we're
- 00:02:19gonna use some sandpaper and polish to
- 00:02:21blend our new touch-up paint into the
- 00:02:23original paintwork that way it doesn't
- 00:02:25stand out as much and it'll be a lot
- 00:02:27harder to see that this was ever touched
- 00:02:29up so if you follow those four simple
- 00:02:31steps you could do this at home yourself
- 00:02:33and get great results now here are all
- 00:02:36the tools and products you're gonna need
- 00:02:38again trying to keep it simple and
- 00:02:39inexpensive you're gonna need some
- 00:02:41isopropyl alcohol in this case 70 or
- 00:02:44greater you're going to need some soapy
- 00:02:46water this is just dish soap and water
- 00:02:48and you're going to need a razor blade
- 00:02:50like this along with some tape it's a
- 00:02:52good idea to have a couple of microfiber
- 00:02:54towels on hand you're going to need a
- 00:02:56kitchen sponge 2 000 3000 and then 5000
- 00:03:00grit sandpaper and then to finish it off
- 00:03:02some polish and a polishing pad and then
- 00:03:05finally you're gonna need one of these
- 00:03:07paint pens that matches the paint to
- 00:03:09your car now all these tools and
- 00:03:10products i will link in the description
- 00:03:13below so you can easily find each one
- 00:03:16now real quick before you go out and
- 00:03:17purchase an automotive touch-up paint
- 00:03:19pen like this you want to make sure it
- 00:03:21has a couple of features the first thing
- 00:03:22is obviously you want to make sure that
- 00:03:24it has the base coat the color coat that
- 00:03:27you're looking for so we have our white
- 00:03:29right there the next thing very
- 00:03:31important you want to make sure that you
- 00:03:33have automotive clear coat so if we take
- 00:03:35this off right here the bottom part has
- 00:03:37our automotive clear coat and that is
- 00:03:40important because that's going to get us
- 00:03:41those really good results and then
- 00:03:43another feature this pen has is the tip
- 00:03:45right here is good for sanding it gets
- 00:03:47the rust out of the deep scratches and
- 00:03:49then one last thing it's very important
- 00:03:51if we take a look over here at the front
- 00:03:52it shows you the different paint codes
- 00:03:54that this paint pen covers it's bright
- 00:03:56white and we need to make sure this
- 00:03:58matches our paint code for our car so
- 00:04:00how do you find the paint code for your
- 00:04:02car well it's simple to find the paint
- 00:04:04code for your car all you need to do is
- 00:04:06come to the driver's side door open it
- 00:04:08up and you're going to look at the door
- 00:04:10jam stickers located right here and if
- 00:04:12we take a look at this sticker you can
- 00:04:14see it says paint pw7 so pw7 is our
- 00:04:18paint code now let's just say for
- 00:04:19whatever reason you can't find that
- 00:04:21paint code well on this door jam sticker
- 00:04:23is always going to be a vin the vehicle
- 00:04:25identification number which is right
- 00:04:27there all you need to do is write that
- 00:04:28down and then call up the car's
- 00:04:30manufacturer in this case it's a
- 00:04:31chrysler you'd call them up and they
- 00:04:32could give you the paint code just from
- 00:04:34the vin so it's pretty simple to make
- 00:04:36sure you have the correct paint code
- 00:04:38another thing that you might run into as
- 00:04:39you're buying these paint pens is should
- 00:04:41you go after market or should you go oem
- 00:04:44but i'm here to tell you just get
- 00:04:45whichever one's cheaper you can see the
- 00:04:46paint pens look identical that's because
- 00:04:48the aftermarket actually makes the oem
- 00:04:50paint so whichever one you could buy
- 00:04:52that's cheaper go for because they're
- 00:04:54both the same now one last thing you
- 00:04:56should check is for paint fade
- 00:04:58especially if you have an older car over
- 00:04:59time the paint on your car is gonna fade
- 00:05:02because the sun is always beating down
- 00:05:04on it and although you might think your
- 00:05:06paint work looks good it's not faded
- 00:05:08over time it will fade no matter what so
- 00:05:10to check that find something such as
- 00:05:11your license plate which doesn't move
- 00:05:13this is what you've had on there since
- 00:05:14the car was bought and if we remove the
- 00:05:16plate you could clearly see there is a
- 00:05:18difference between the paint that's been
- 00:05:20protected and the paint that's been
- 00:05:21exposed to the sun which is faded
- 00:05:23another place you could check is behind
- 00:05:25the fuel filler door because again this
- 00:05:27paintwork back here isn't touched by the
- 00:05:29sun the sun isn't beating down on it
- 00:05:31because it's protected but you could
- 00:05:32compare it directly to the paintwork
- 00:05:34right next to it and you can see if your
- 00:05:36paintwork is faded in this case it
- 00:05:38doesn't look too bad but you could see a
- 00:05:39slight difference
- 00:05:41and the last example i want to give you
- 00:05:42guys is this right here because it's so
- 00:05:44drastic so for whatever reason the
- 00:05:46taillight bezels on these sn95 mustangs
- 00:05:49fade a lot quicker than the rest of the
- 00:05:51paintwork on the car and this gives you
- 00:05:53a clear depiction of what faded paint
- 00:05:55looks like look at the difference there
- 00:05:57that's huge now it is better to have
- 00:06:00touch-up paint on the car than a big
- 00:06:02black gash or a white gash or whatever
- 00:06:03color is underneath here i'm just
- 00:06:05letting you guys know if you have faded
- 00:06:07paint you're gonna see more of a color
- 00:06:09difference between your touch-up paint
- 00:06:10and your original paint so just keep
- 00:06:11that in mind now in this case our car is
- 00:06:14less than five years old so we really
- 00:06:16don't have to worry about faded paint so
- 00:06:18we could begin our repair of our deep
- 00:06:20scratch now i think it's very important
- 00:06:23to understand the different layers of
- 00:06:25paint that way you know exactly what
- 00:06:27we're doing to repair this so let me
- 00:06:29show you first you have the actual panel
- 00:06:31usually it's sheet metal or plastic then
- 00:06:33the first coat is a primer coat usually
- 00:06:36this is a gray primer and it ranges
- 00:06:38anywhere between 10 and 40 microns thick
- 00:06:40then on top of that primer is a base
- 00:06:42coat this is what gives your car a color
- 00:06:44this color coat is usually within 10 to
- 00:06:4640 microns thick as well and then
- 00:06:48finally on top of that is the thickest
- 00:06:49layer the clear coat layer and that
- 00:06:51protects the base coat and gives it a
- 00:06:53nice glossy shine this could be anywhere
- 00:06:55from 40 microns to 100 microns so in
- 00:06:57total the paint could be anywhere from
- 00:06:5960 to 180 microns and that varies a lot
- 00:07:01because different manufacturers spray on
- 00:07:03different thicknesses of paint and just
- 00:07:05to put that into perspective a plain
- 00:07:06sheet of printer paper like this is
- 00:07:08about 100 microns thick so this is about
- 00:07:10how thick your paintwork is on top of
- 00:07:12your panel so this right here is
- 00:07:14definitely a deep scratch it goes
- 00:07:16through the base coat into the primer
- 00:07:18it's not a clear coat scratch now if you
- 00:07:20do have a clear coat scratch like this
- 00:07:21one right here on my truck don't worry
- 00:07:24this is super easy to repair and i have
- 00:07:26a full in-depth video that shows you how
- 00:07:28to remove a clear coat scratch and i'll
- 00:07:30be sure to link that video in the
- 00:07:32description so you can easily find it
- 00:07:33but to verify this is actually a scratch
- 00:07:36that's in the clear coat only it's not a
- 00:07:37deep scratch or a paint transfer all you
- 00:07:39need to do is get some alcohol on a rag
- 00:07:42and then wipe it down and it should
- 00:07:44disappear like that and this is only
- 00:07:46temporary but you can see how it
- 00:07:47disappears and after a couple seconds
- 00:07:49the alcohol starts to evaporate and the
- 00:07:51scratch will start to be visible again
- 00:07:53but that's a good way to tell if you
- 00:07:54have a clear coat scratch alright so now
- 00:07:56you know the different layers of paint
- 00:07:57the different types of scratches let me
- 00:07:59show you how to repair a deep scratch
- 00:08:01like this and remember the larger the
- 00:08:03deep scratch the harder the repair if
- 00:08:04you have a smaller one it's going to be
- 00:08:06super easy so after you see how we get
- 00:08:08this done you'll be able to do yours no
- 00:08:10problem at all so the first step is to
- 00:08:12clean our entire panel we'll start off
- 00:08:14using soapy water all this is is a
- 00:08:16squirt of dish soap and fill the rest up
- 00:08:18with warm water and just spray this down
- 00:08:21and what this is going to do is this is
- 00:08:22going to remove oils waxes dirt and
- 00:08:24debris stuff like that that we don't
- 00:08:26want to get into our scratch all right
- 00:08:28so step number one is done our panel is
- 00:08:30clean so now we can move on to step
- 00:08:32number two and that is to prep our
- 00:08:34scratch now it's very very important we
- 00:08:36cannot have any rust at all in our
- 00:08:39scratch if there's any rust and you
- 00:08:41paint over that rust the paint will
- 00:08:43bubble so you have to remove all the
- 00:08:44rust luckily we don't have any rust in
- 00:08:46this scratch but let's just say you did
- 00:08:48have some rust just get some 400 grit
- 00:08:50sandpaper fold it over and get that rust
- 00:08:52out of the scratch you could also use
- 00:08:54that abrasive tip on the paint pen this
- 00:08:56is really good at removing rust as well
- 00:08:58you just want to get in that scratch and
- 00:09:00again remove all the rust if there is
- 00:09:02any so once all the rust is removed from
- 00:09:04the scratch the next thing in this step
- 00:09:06to prep the scratch is to remove the
- 00:09:09sharp edges so whenever there's a deep
- 00:09:11scratch the edge of the scratch is steep
- 00:09:13and jagged so we want to sand that edge
- 00:09:15of the scratch to round it out and make
- 00:09:17it less of a steep cliff and more of a
- 00:09:20smooth round hill this will make the
- 00:09:21touch-up paint blend in much better to
- 00:09:23the surrounding paintwork and make it a
- 00:09:25lot harder to see the repair and if you
- 00:09:27take a look at our scratch you could
- 00:09:28clearly see those sharp jagged edges
- 00:09:30that we need to smooth out to make our
- 00:09:32touch-up blend better so start by using
- 00:09:34the abrasive tip on the touch-up pen and
- 00:09:36focus your sanding on the jagged edges
- 00:09:38don't worry if you send a little bit
- 00:09:39onto the clear coat because we're going
- 00:09:40to be adding more later just focus on
- 00:09:42getting those sharp jagged edges nice
- 00:09:45and smooth then wipe down the scratch
- 00:09:47with some alcohol to remove all the dust
- 00:09:48you just created so we could get an
- 00:09:49accurate look at the progress we've made
- 00:09:52so now that the edges are sanded we want
- 00:09:54to feather out our sanding onto the base
- 00:09:55coat and onto the clear coat right next
- 00:09:57to the scratch this is going to give us
- 00:09:59a nice smooth transition and to do that
- 00:10:01you could either use 800 grit or 1000
- 00:10:03grit sandpaper and have a little trick i
- 00:10:05want to show you with the sandpaper if
- 00:10:06we just fold the sandpaper over once
- 00:10:08that's going to give us a sharp edge
- 00:10:10like that and that's not going to help
- 00:10:11us smooth this out this is just going to
- 00:10:13dig into the paint and not give us that
- 00:10:15smooth hill that we need so what we're
- 00:10:17going to do is fold it over one more
- 00:10:19time but don't crease it just lightly
- 00:10:21fold it over so it has like a
- 00:10:22semi-circle there and you can see how we
- 00:10:24don't have a sharp edge that's a nice
- 00:10:26rounded edge and we're going to use that
- 00:10:27to sand our scratch and just look at how
- 00:10:29nicely that rounded sandpaper fits in
- 00:10:32that scratch now to round it out that is
- 00:10:34beautiful that's exactly what you want
- 00:10:37now you're probably wondering how do you
- 00:10:38know when you're done sanding you don't
- 00:10:39want to remove too much well all you
- 00:10:41need to do is feel with your fingernail
- 00:10:43if you could grab the edge of the
- 00:10:44scratch with your fingernail you should
- 00:10:46sand a little bit more to make it more
- 00:10:47rounded in this case this feels nice and
- 00:10:50smooth again it's like a hill rather
- 00:10:52than a cliff i cannot grab this with my
- 00:10:54fingernail so we are done so here's what
- 00:10:56the scratch looked like before with
- 00:10:57sharp jagged edges and here's what it
- 00:10:59looks like after nice and smooth so
- 00:11:02that's all there is to our second step
- 00:11:04remove any rust from the scratch and
- 00:11:07then smooth it out to remove all the
- 00:11:08sharp jagged edges now remember the
- 00:11:11smaller the scratch the quicker and
- 00:11:12easier this is i just did that one
- 00:11:15section right there i still need to do
- 00:11:17the rest of the scratch which is pretty
- 00:11:19big it goes all the way around so i'm
- 00:11:22gonna go knock this out real quick and
- 00:11:23then we can move on to the next step
- 00:11:24which is our painting step now although
- 00:11:27i said i'm going to knock this out real
- 00:11:28quick you want to take your time here
- 00:11:29this is very important to do properly
- 00:11:32sand that scratch down remove any of
- 00:11:34those sharp jagged edges and that's
- 00:11:36going to give you the best results once
- 00:11:37we add our paint with a touch-up pen now
- 00:11:39you can see right here this scratch is a
- 00:11:41lot more narrow it's still a deep
- 00:11:42scratch it still goes all the way
- 00:11:44through the base coat into the primer
- 00:11:46but they use the sharp end of the key
- 00:11:47instead of the wide end so they created
- 00:11:49a narrow deep scratch since your scratch
- 00:11:52might look like this rather than a wide
- 00:11:53scratch that i just showed you here's
- 00:11:55how to prep this one the process is
- 00:11:57basically the same you're going to start
- 00:11:58out with your abrasive tip on the paint
- 00:12:00pen just like before but now the scratch
- 00:12:02is so narrow we're actually setting down
- 00:12:04both edges at the same time and for a
- 00:12:06tight scratch like this we don't want to
- 00:12:07make it too much wider if we could help
- 00:12:09it so keep that sanding right on top of
- 00:12:10the scratch same with the sandpaper keep
- 00:12:12the sandpaper rolled nice and tight that
- 00:12:14way we're focusing just on the scratch
- 00:12:16and don't sand too far off the sides of
- 00:12:18the scratch now here's a really good
- 00:12:20angle to show you how tight we're
- 00:12:21keeping this for sanding the narrow
- 00:12:23scratch and if you take a look even on
- 00:12:24this narrow scratch we made sure we have
- 00:12:26a nice smooth transition and it's not a
- 00:12:29sharp cliff so the same process applies
- 00:12:31we didn't have to make it extra wide but
- 00:12:33we did want to make sure you could see
- 00:12:35there is the primer you can see the base
- 00:12:37coat right there and then the clear coat
- 00:12:38right there so we have multiple layers
- 00:12:40that way when we fill this in we could
- 00:12:42fill it in and hide the scratch now
- 00:12:45after you're done sanding down your
- 00:12:46entire scratch and smoothing it out make
- 00:12:48sure you go back one more time and check
- 00:12:51for any sharp edges and i keep bringing
- 00:12:53this up because it's probably the most
- 00:12:54important part of this entire touch-up
- 00:12:56job to get the best results you should
- 00:12:58not be able to feel a difference between
- 00:13:00the clear coat and the base coat down
- 00:13:02into the primer this should feel nice
- 00:13:04and smooth and it does if there is a lip
- 00:13:07right here i promise you you will see it
- 00:13:09once you add your touch-up paint so with
- 00:13:11our entire scratch nice and smooth you
- 00:13:14can't grab it with your fingernail we
- 00:13:16are done with the prep step and we are
- 00:13:18ready for step number three the painting
- 00:13:20step so we smoothed out the deep scratch
- 00:13:23and now we need to add our touch-up
- 00:13:24paint when we add the touch-up paint
- 00:13:26don't worry about adding too much we
- 00:13:27actually want to overflow out of the
- 00:13:29scratch and be higher than the
- 00:13:30surrounding factory paint so let's go do
- 00:13:33that before you paint make sure you get
- 00:13:35some isopropyl alcohol and a towel and
- 00:13:38wipe down the entire scratch make sure
- 00:13:40you get in the scratch on the edge of
- 00:13:42the scratch and the surrounding area of
- 00:13:44the scratch this is going to remove all
- 00:13:46of those oils waxes grease any dirt any
- 00:13:50dust we want this surface to be
- 00:13:51perfectly clean so that our paint could
- 00:13:53adhere to it now with that completely
- 00:13:55clean the next step is to grab some tape
- 00:13:58and we need to tape off our scratch
- 00:14:00let's start on the bottom of the scratch
- 00:14:02and place the tape about one to two
- 00:14:03millimeters from the edge of the scratch
- 00:14:05it doesn't have to be perfect just make
- 00:14:07sure it's not touching the scratch and
- 00:14:08the reason i suggest taping it it's
- 00:14:10easier for cleanup so with the scratch
- 00:14:12surrounded by tape we don't have to
- 00:14:13worry about touch-up paint getting on
- 00:14:14the surrounding paintwork which adds
- 00:14:16more work for us later on so when we're
- 00:14:18done clean up is easy just remove the
- 00:14:20tape and that's all there is to it make
- 00:14:22sure you add tape to your scratch like
- 00:14:23that and you'll see how helpful this is
- 00:14:25going to be after we finish painting so
- 00:14:27hopefully your scratch is tiny and you
- 00:14:29just need to tape up a little area like
- 00:14:30that but in this case we have a giant
- 00:14:32scratch so
- 00:14:34beautiful so now the entire scratch is
- 00:14:36taped off top and bottom and this is
- 00:14:38what it should look like and if you're
- 00:14:39wondering don't worry about the tape
- 00:14:41lines we'll have after the paint dries
- 00:14:42we'll be sanding down the touch-up paint
- 00:14:44so it's level with the surrounding paint
- 00:14:45so paint lines don't even matter it's
- 00:14:47just a lot less work if we keep the
- 00:14:49paint contained to one small area so now
- 00:14:51we are ready to go it is time to add our
- 00:14:53paint to our scratch you want to make
- 00:14:55sure you shake it up real good this
- 00:14:57paint has primer and paint built in so
- 00:14:59we don't need to prime it so let's
- 00:15:00unscrew our brush and make sure you
- 00:15:02remove all the excess paint by wiping
- 00:15:04the brush on the edge of the container
- 00:15:06so we don't have a big blob on the end
- 00:15:07of the brush now when applying the paint
- 00:15:09it's important we start with very thin
- 00:15:11layers and apply to the top of the
- 00:15:13scratch because gravity is going to pull
- 00:15:14some of that paint down and as you can
- 00:15:16see we have a paint drip coming down the
- 00:15:18edge of our brush so let's wipe that off
- 00:15:20so it doesn't add too much paint to the
- 00:15:21scratch good and now we want to continue
- 00:15:23to work our way from one end of the
- 00:15:24scratch to the other making sure the
- 00:15:26paint is being applied as thin as
- 00:15:28possible while still getting coverage
- 00:15:30like so now you might be tempted to go
- 00:15:32back and try to touch something up but
- 00:15:34don't do it don't go over here and try
- 00:15:36to mess around with it because this
- 00:15:37dries pretty quickly might dry in like
- 00:15:4010-15 seconds and if you go back and try
- 00:15:42to mess around with it that surface skin
- 00:15:44that forms is gonna get messed up and
- 00:15:46it's not gonna look good so just wait
- 00:15:48don't worry we're gonna add some more
- 00:15:49layers and it's gonna look way better
- 00:15:51another thing is this paint is
- 00:15:52relatively self-leveling so if you start
- 00:15:54to go in there again you're gonna make
- 00:15:56it look really rough but as it dries on
- 00:15:58its own it'll self-level and be a lot
- 00:16:01smoother than the texture that the brush
- 00:16:02creates okay so five minutes later our
- 00:16:05paint is ready for the next coat just
- 00:16:07like before apply a thin coat on top of
- 00:16:09the scratch and work your way across the
- 00:16:11scratch and don't backtrack at all
- 00:16:14five more minutes later we are ready for
- 00:16:15our third coat and i think you get the
- 00:16:17idea the whole goal is we want to build
- 00:16:19up thin coats higher than the
- 00:16:21surrounding paint that way when the
- 00:16:22paint dries we could sand it down even
- 00:16:24with the factory paint and also i'm sure
- 00:16:26you've noticed you don't have to be good
- 00:16:27at using a paint brush you just need to
- 00:16:29make sure the layers are thin and even
- 00:16:31and even if it doesn't look great it
- 00:16:33will sand nice and smooth once we're
- 00:16:34done another five minutes later and
- 00:16:36we're on coat four and this coat is
- 00:16:38gonna be a little bit thicker and we
- 00:16:39don't want it to be a giant blob so you
- 00:16:41could drag that paint across the rest of
- 00:16:43the scratch to even it out just like
- 00:16:45that and this scratch looks like it's
- 00:16:46completely filled in so this is gonna be
- 00:16:48our last layer so in this case it took
- 00:16:50four layers for our paint to build up
- 00:16:52thick enough so it's above the
- 00:16:54surrounding paintwork we want it to be
- 00:16:56above because now we're gonna sand it
- 00:16:57down we're gonna sand it down so that
- 00:16:58it's level with the rest of the paint so
- 00:17:00don't worry if you add too many layers
- 00:17:02in this case it took four it might take
- 00:17:04you five it might take you six it could
- 00:17:05take you three you just wanna make sure
- 00:17:07you have more layers than you need you
- 00:17:09wanna make sure it's thicker than the
- 00:17:10surrounding paint that way when you sand
- 00:17:11it down you could sand it even with the
- 00:17:13rest of the body work so four layers
- 00:17:15later and this paintwork is looking
- 00:17:17absolutely
- 00:17:18incredible our touch-up paint came out
- 00:17:20awesome it matches really well you can
- 00:17:22see how well it matches and i cannot
- 00:17:24wait to take this tape off and finish up
- 00:17:26this job and see how awesome it came out
- 00:17:29now after letting the paint dry for
- 00:17:31about 10 minutes we could carefully
- 00:17:32remove the tape and don't just rip it
- 00:17:34off do this slowly the trick is to pull
- 00:17:36the tape back on itself as you're
- 00:17:38removing it also pull the edge at a 45
- 00:17:41degree angle away from the touch-up
- 00:17:42paint that way it's going to give it a
- 00:17:44nice sharp line without damaging the
- 00:17:46paint so take your time and carefully
- 00:17:48remove all the tape and any tape you
- 00:17:50can't peel off use a straight edge to
- 00:17:52lift the corner up so you don't damage
- 00:17:53your touch-up paint with your finger and
- 00:17:55once you get the corner up then it
- 00:17:57should peel off nice and easy like that
- 00:17:59all right and would you look at this
- 00:18:01this is looking so much better already
- 00:18:03now i know there are paint lines you can
- 00:18:05clearly see it it's not blended in yet
- 00:18:08but next step is to remove the paint
- 00:18:10lines it's to sand this down so it
- 00:18:12blends in with the rest of the paintwork
- 00:18:14and it's gonna look incredible this
- 00:18:16paint is matching super nice and you're
- 00:18:19barely gonna be able to see this this is
- 00:18:20gonna come out so good i'm so pumped
- 00:18:22okay so let's get on to the next step
- 00:18:24which is to sand down the touch-up paint
- 00:18:26okay now for the sanding step we're
- 00:18:27gonna be using 800 grit sandpaper so
- 00:18:30what i like to do with the sandpaper is
- 00:18:31i like to cut it into a small square
- 00:18:33like that and with our sandpaper we
- 00:18:36don't want to go and try to sand this by
- 00:18:38hand that's gonna damage the clear coat
- 00:18:39we're gonna get uneven marks what we
- 00:18:41need is a small sanding block a typical
- 00:18:43size sanding block is going to be way
- 00:18:45too big for this little piece so find
- 00:18:47something like a domino in this case the
- 00:18:49domino works perfect it is a small flat
- 00:18:51surface and what we're going to do is
- 00:18:53wrap our sandpaper around the domino now
- 00:18:55we have a flat small thin surface that
- 00:18:58we could use to sand away the paint
- 00:18:59lines without damaging the surrounding
- 00:19:01clear coat now our touch-up paint is
- 00:19:02completely dry it's been sitting here
- 00:19:04for over an hour you don't want to sand
- 00:19:06wet touch-up paint so let it dry and
- 00:19:08hours plenty of time and now we just
- 00:19:10need to sand these paint lines away and
- 00:19:12you can see how the domino is just the
- 00:19:13right width for sanding the touch-up
- 00:19:15paint and the technique here is to sand
- 00:19:17back and forth along the scratch until
- 00:19:19it levels off with the surrounding
- 00:19:20paintwork you want to do your best and
- 00:19:22keep that sandpaper on the touch-up
- 00:19:24paint and try not to sand the
- 00:19:25surrounding factory paint too much and
- 00:19:27once the scratch is level stop sanding
- 00:19:30so you don't remove too much paint and
- 00:19:31then run your finger across the scratch
- 00:19:33and you shouldn't feel anything it
- 00:19:35should feel nice and smooth like that
- 00:19:37beautiful
- 00:19:38now so you could appreciate what we just
- 00:19:40did and the whole point of sanding it
- 00:19:42down you can see our strong paint line
- 00:19:44goes all the way across now right here
- 00:19:46where we sanded it that section right
- 00:19:47there this is completely gone it looks
- 00:19:51perfect i mean it's not done yet we
- 00:19:52didn't polish it yet we didn't add clear
- 00:19:54coat and that scratch disappeared you
- 00:19:56can't feel it at all and it looks
- 00:19:59absolutely perfect that's exactly what
- 00:20:01you want to do for the rest of your
- 00:20:02scratch now since i'm working on a large
- 00:20:05scratch to prevent the sandpaper from
- 00:20:06gumming up with paint spray the area
- 00:20:08down with soapy water and then you could
- 00:20:10start sanding away and there really
- 00:20:12isn't anything special to this all
- 00:20:13you're doing is sanding the touch-up
- 00:20:15paint so that it's level with the
- 00:20:16surrounding paint so i'm going to work
- 00:20:17my way around the entire scratch
- 00:20:19leveling it out and just make sure you
- 00:20:21keep that sandpaper localized onto the
- 00:20:23touch of paint and then once the paint
- 00:20:24is level with the surrounding area you
- 00:20:26are done and when you think you're done
- 00:20:29wipe your hand across the panel and see
- 00:20:30if you can feel any bumps from the touch
- 00:20:32of paint if you do feel bumps you didn't
- 00:20:34sand enough keep going in this case this
- 00:20:36feels nice and smooth now although this
- 00:20:39looks great make sure you take your time
- 00:20:41and visually inspect your entire scratch
- 00:20:44if you see any spots where the paint
- 00:20:45doesn't look great it's not up to your
- 00:20:47standards you want to make it look
- 00:20:49better now's the time to do it because
- 00:20:51once you put that clear coat on it's a
- 00:20:52lot more difficult to sand the clear
- 00:20:54coat completely away and then retouch up
- 00:20:56that area for example right here you can
- 00:20:59see our scratch is pretty well blended
- 00:21:01here you can't really see it but then
- 00:21:02once you get right there there's an
- 00:21:04indentation we either didn't put enough
- 00:21:05paint in there or when we sanded it it
- 00:21:07chipped away whatever the case is that
- 00:21:09we will definitely see after we add our
- 00:21:11clear coat so let's fix it and to fix it
- 00:21:14all you need to do is fill it back in if
- 00:21:16you want you could add tape i'm not
- 00:21:17going to i'm going to just be extra
- 00:21:19careful here and i just need to fill it
- 00:21:21just a little bit so one coat should do
- 00:21:23the trick and 10 minutes later let's get
- 00:21:25some soapy water on there and wet sand
- 00:21:27the touch of paint until it's nice and
- 00:21:29level with the surrounding paintwork
- 00:21:31good let's wipe it down and that looks
- 00:21:34way better alright so once you're happy
- 00:21:36with how your touch-up paint came out
- 00:21:38the last thing we need to do is apply
- 00:21:41our clear coat to all the parts that we
- 00:21:43touched up but before we add clear coat
- 00:21:45let's get some isopropyl alcohol on a
- 00:21:47towel and wipe down the panel to remove
- 00:21:49any dust that's still on there from
- 00:21:51sanding now we can add our clear coat
- 00:21:53and just like the color coat we want to
- 00:21:55add thin layers start from one end of
- 00:21:57the scratch and work your way down to
- 00:21:59the other end and it's really difficult
- 00:22:00to get clear coat to go on smooth
- 00:22:02especially with a brush like this so
- 00:22:04don't really worry about how it looks we
- 00:22:06just want to have a complete layer
- 00:22:07covering our touch-up paint and also a
- 00:22:09little bit of overlap on the surrounding
- 00:22:11factory paint and then after letting
- 00:22:12this dry for 10 minutes apply one final
- 00:22:15coat for a total of two coats again just
- 00:22:17make sure the entire scratch is covered
- 00:22:19in clear coat that way we could sand it
- 00:22:20smooth with the surrounding clear coat
- 00:22:22so with two thin layers of clear coat
- 00:22:24coating our entire
- 00:22:26scratch sealing in our touch-up paint
- 00:22:28now i'm going to let this dry for about
- 00:22:30an hour and an hour later you can see
- 00:22:32the clear coat here is dry and has a
- 00:22:34nice gloss to it but it's uneven and
- 00:22:36there's ridges and stuff well to remove
- 00:22:38the ridges spray it down with soapy
- 00:22:40water and grab your 800 grit sandpaper
- 00:22:42and start sanding it down so it's level
- 00:22:43with the surrounding clear coat then we
- 00:22:45can move up to 1 500 grit so spray down
- 00:22:47the paint and wet sand the clear coat we
- 00:22:49applied and start feathering out your
- 00:22:51sanding into the surrounding clear coat
- 00:22:53as well then we can move up the 2000
- 00:22:55grit so spray down the paint and wet
- 00:22:57sand our touch-up clear coat as well as
- 00:22:59a little bit of the surrounding clear
- 00:23:01coat and then let's wipe this down and
- 00:23:02let's see how it came out and if you run
- 00:23:04your finger across you can't feel the
- 00:23:06clear coat it is nice and level with the
- 00:23:08factory clear coat and that's exactly
- 00:23:10what we want so at this point where you
- 00:23:12added your clear coat should feel nice
- 00:23:14and smooth we sanded it down so that
- 00:23:16it's level with the factory paint work
- 00:23:17and one way to make sure is close your
- 00:23:20eyes and just run your fingers across
- 00:23:22the panel you shouldn't be able to feel
- 00:23:24any divots any valleys any hills any
- 00:23:27bumps anything like that it should just
- 00:23:28feel like one smooth panel and that does
- 00:23:31that feels absolutely perfect so now you
- 00:23:33can probably see there is a little bit
- 00:23:35of a haze here and some of the panel's
- 00:23:37glossy some of it's not glossy we need
- 00:23:39to fix that and that's the fourth step
- 00:23:40the final step that's where we do a wet
- 00:23:42sand and then we polish it and we make
- 00:23:44this look like one perfect panel so
- 00:23:46let's get to it and to wet sand we're
- 00:23:48going to start out with 3000 grit
- 00:23:50sandpaper then we'll move our way up to
- 00:23:525000 grit sandpaper and finally to get
- 00:23:55the gloss back we'll finish up with a
- 00:23:56nice coat of polish now before you start
- 00:23:59sanding a helpful trick i want to show
- 00:24:00you don't use your bare hands to wet
- 00:24:03sand what happens is your fingers create
- 00:24:05pressure points on the sandpaper and you
- 00:24:07won't get an even sand it'll create hot
- 00:24:09spots and it won't look good so a trick
- 00:24:11is to grab a sponge lay it over the
- 00:24:13sandpaper wrap your sandpaper around it
- 00:24:15and now the sponge will absorb any
- 00:24:17pressure points so you have a nice even
- 00:24:20sand now real quick i want to show you
- 00:24:22up close what this is going to look like
- 00:24:23so you can see where we've been working
- 00:24:25right there it's all scratched up well
- 00:24:27we're going to wet sand with the 3000
- 00:24:29grit then we're going to wet sand with
- 00:24:30the 5000 grit then we're gonna buff in
- 00:24:32some polish which is a light abrasive
- 00:24:35and then we'll buff that off and then
- 00:24:36that will blend in that scratch you
- 00:24:38can't even see it anymore it literally
- 00:24:40disappears so we want to apply the same
- 00:24:43process to the entire panel and make it
- 00:24:45blend in and look uniform so spray it
- 00:24:47down with soapy water and get some on
- 00:24:49the sandpaper too and sand the entire
- 00:24:51panel down with 3000 grit sandpaper and
- 00:24:54while wet sanding make sure you move in
- 00:24:56a back and forth motion don't do any
- 00:24:58circles because circles form circular
- 00:25:00scratches and circular scratches are
- 00:25:02more difficult to remove than straight
- 00:25:03scratches then you can wipe down the
- 00:25:05panel to remove any small particles we
- 00:25:07created with the 3000 grit sandpaper and
- 00:25:09now we can spray the panel down with
- 00:25:10soapy water and move on to our 5000 grit
- 00:25:13sandpaper
- 00:25:14again make sure you sand down the entire
- 00:25:16panel don't miss any spots or you're
- 00:25:18gonna see it when we're done finally do
- 00:25:20one more wipe down and we are on the
- 00:25:22last step which is the polishing step so
- 00:25:24get some polish on the buffing pad and
- 00:25:26then spread it out over the entire panel
- 00:25:28and finally with heavy pressure buff the
- 00:25:30polish into the panel in a circular
- 00:25:32motion since polish is a very fine
- 00:25:34abrasive the circular motion attacks the
- 00:25:36scratches in all different directions to
- 00:25:38make the clear coat nice and glossy so
- 00:25:40now with the whole panel polished grab a
- 00:25:42fresh microfiber towel and buff off the
- 00:25:44polish to reveal a nice and shiny panel
- 00:25:47look at that and beautiful we brought
- 00:25:50back all that gloss to our panel and
- 00:25:53this is a real high gloss shine right
- 00:25:54now and we blend it in the scratch so
- 00:25:56you can't even see it and with that we
- 00:25:59are done and holy smokes you can't even
- 00:26:01see the scratch anymore it is gone look
- 00:26:04at that and just as a reminder this is
- 00:26:06what the scratch looked like before we
- 00:26:08started it's clearly visible doesn't
- 00:26:10look good at all and here's what it
- 00:26:12looks like after you can't even see it
- 00:26:14you would never know there was a giant
- 00:26:15deep scratch on here now although these
- 00:26:17results are absolutely amazing it's not
- 00:26:20perfect you can still see the scratch if
- 00:26:22you get to the right angle and you could
- 00:26:24kind of kind of see it right there it's
- 00:26:27a little tough to see but you get the
- 00:26:29idea if you get to the right angle if
- 00:26:30you get up close you're able to see it
- 00:26:32once you step back just a little bit it
- 00:26:34disappears it's gone and then if you're
- 00:26:36looking at the car from 5-10 feet away
- 00:26:38you'll never see it so for 15 a paint
- 00:26:41pen works so well and now you know how
- 00:26:43to get these kind of results so with
- 00:26:45your panel all touched up it's looking
- 00:26:47beautiful you might be tempted to try to
- 00:26:48add a wax or ceramic coating to protect
- 00:26:51it but don't do that just yet touch-up
- 00:26:54paint can take up to 30 days to fully
- 00:26:56cure and harden so you don't want to
- 00:26:58seal it off and prevent that from
- 00:26:59happening in the meantime you could
- 00:27:00still drive the car you could still get
- 00:27:02it wet go in the rain wash the car
- 00:27:04whatever just don't seal it with a
- 00:27:06ceramic coating or a wax so there you go
- 00:27:09now you know how to properly repair deep
- 00:27:11scratches using a simple touch-up pen
- 00:27:13and this came out absolutely amazing it
- 00:27:16looks incredible and you guys could get
- 00:27:19those same results also another thing i
- 00:27:21want to mention is if you get little
- 00:27:23rock chips on your front bumper from
- 00:27:24rocks kicking up you can follow the same
- 00:27:26exact steps and get the same amazing
- 00:27:28results so hopefully the video was
- 00:27:30helpful if it was remember to give it a
