over the last couple of episodes we've
  • 00:00:02
looked at how you can become the best
  • 00:00:04
defensive team in your league and we're
  • 00:00:06
going to take that one step further now
  • 00:00:07
and we're going to build a complete
  • 00:00:09
tactic but we're going to do it a little
  • 00:00:11
bit differently we're going to build a
  • 00:00:13
very very simple tactic which will be
  • 00:00:15
very very successful we're going to
  • 00:00:17
reverse engineer it let's go and kick
  • 00:00:20
    some
  • 00:00:23
balls hello and welcome back to FM with
  • 00:00:26
old man Phil and if you are a brand new
  • 00:00:28
visitor I'm Phil and well welcome to the
  • 00:00:30
channel and over the last couple of
  • 00:00:32
episodes in this series of four we've
  • 00:00:34
been looking at how to set up your team
  • 00:00:36
to become the best defensive team in
  • 00:00:38
your league and we've been very
  • 00:00:39
    successful applying a a system across a
  • 00:00:42
number of saves and we always turn out
  • 00:00:44
to be the best defensive team in the
  • 00:00:47
league and as you can see here from our
  • 00:00:49
live stream with notot County a team
  • 00:00:51
that's way overperforming we are the
  • 00:00:54
best team in terms of goals conceded we
  • 00:00:56
are the best team in the league and in
  • 00:00:59
our hero sa similar to nots County we
  • 00:01:02
are top of the league we are the best
  • 00:01:04
team in terms of attacking and the best
  • 00:01:06
team in terms of Defending and we set up
  • 00:01:09
the tactic in exactly the same way as we
  • 00:01:11
set up the tactic for NZ County and
  • 00:01:14
finally we did a test with Arsenal and
  • 00:01:17
as you can see once again with Arsenal
  • 00:01:19
very very similar story we are top of
  • 00:01:21
the league we are the best in terms of
  • 00:01:22
attacking and we are the best in terms
  • 00:01:25
of Defending and so we have set this
  • 00:01:27
tactic up to in a very similar way to
  • 00:01:30
what we did with the other two and today
  • 00:01:33
we're going to take a look at how to
  • 00:01:34
build a very very simple tactic which
  • 00:01:37
will be very very successful often
  • 00:01:40
people who are just setting out on the
  • 00:01:41
game will have a problem understanding
  • 00:01:43
how to put a tactic together and it's
  • 00:01:44
one of the hardest parts of the game
  • 00:01:46
when you first start to play this game
  • 00:01:48
but it's a very very simple way that you
  • 00:01:50
can do it and today we're going to build
  • 00:01:52
a tactic based on what we've been doing
  • 00:01:54
already so far if you can't do it don't
  • 00:01:57
do it and once you got the concept of
  • 00:01:59
this and you understand how the
  • 00:02:02
attributes play a huge part in setting
  • 00:02:04
up your tactic and tell you exactly what
  • 00:02:06
your team can do and can't do what
  • 00:02:08
they're good at and what they're not
  • 00:02:09
good at then putting together a tactic a
  • 00:02:11
formation a shape whatever call it what
  • 00:02:13
you like will be one of the simplest
  • 00:02:15
things that you have to do in this game
  • 00:02:18
it's just a case of understanding how to
  • 00:02:20
do it and in order to do it we're going
  • 00:02:22
to do it backwards we're going to
  • 00:02:24
reverse engineer a tactic and I'm going
  • 00:02:26
to select the team at random some the
  • 00:02:28
team I know no nothing about and we're
  • 00:02:30
going to show you how we set up that
  • 00:02:32
tactic and then I'm going to play Eight
  • 00:02:34
Games or so and see how that tactic gets
  • 00:02:36
on will we be the best in terms of
  • 00:02:39
attacking and will we be the best in
  • 00:02:40
terms of Defending in the league but
  • 00:02:43
just before we get into it if you are
  • 00:02:45
brand new to the channel you love FN
  • 00:02:47
content give us a like and hit that
  • 00:02:49
subscribe button and also click that
  • 00:02:51
Bell and then you will be notified when
  • 00:02:53
we upload brand new videos so I think
  • 00:02:56
it's time to get on with it now let's go
  • 00:02:57
and find out what team we're going to
  • 00:02:59
sell setup and reverse engineer this
  • 00:03:02
tactic with let's go and kick some balls
  • 00:03:05
and so the team that we have and we are
  • 00:03:07
going to set up a tactic with and play
  • 00:03:09
the first eight or so games is going to
  • 00:03:12
be Watford and I have absolutely no idea
  • 00:03:15
what the prediction is for Watford what
  • 00:03:17
I do know is that we are about to begin
  • 00:03:20
our first game of the new Championship
  • 00:03:23
season so the preseason is done and uh
  • 00:03:26
the first championship game is about to
  • 00:03:28
begin so this team is not going to have
  • 00:03:30
a lot of time to get used to the tactic
  • 00:03:32
that we're going to prepare for them and
  • 00:03:34
let's have a look at basically where
  • 00:03:36
they are predicted to finish in the
  • 00:03:39
season preview they are predicted to
  • 00:03:41
finish in sixth it's probably therefore
  • 00:03:44
going to be a fairly decent side they
  • 00:03:45
don't have many players in the dream 11
  • 00:03:47
they don't have any in the dream 11 but
  • 00:03:50
in terms of a championship team there
  • 00:03:52
are some very very good teams sitting
  • 00:03:54
above them they are in sixth place and
  • 00:03:56
they should be looking at a playoff
  • 00:03:58
place the in terms of of the Club Vision
  • 00:04:00
that is exactly what the club wants they
  • 00:04:02
want them to reach the skyb championship
  • 00:04:05
playoffs and I would say I would feel
  • 00:04:06
    very optimistic about reaching the
  • 00:04:09
playoffs if not looking for a automatic
  • 00:04:12
promotion place so we have to first of
  • 00:04:15
all now get them ready to play in the
  • 00:04:17
season remembering that our first game
  • 00:04:19
is just a few days to go and uh you can
  • 00:04:22
or cannot do this I don't always do this
  • 00:04:24
but you can go to your squad and just
  • 00:04:26
have a look this might help you in terms
  • 00:04:28
of what the squad is capable of doing it
  • 00:04:31
is it a good defensive team is it a good
  • 00:04:33
attacking team uh is it great in
  • 00:04:35
Midfield what are the what is their
  • 00:04:37
strength a lot of people use this to
  • 00:04:39
find their best players and to work
  • 00:04:41
their team around their best players I
  • 00:04:43
don't do that I just want to know are we
  • 00:04:45
good defensively are we good in attack
  • 00:04:47
are we good in Midfield and if we put
  • 00:04:49
these in terms of the their ability we
  • 00:04:51
can clearly see that a lot of their
  • 00:04:54
    players are either Central Defenders
  • 00:04:56
their top players are either attackers
  • 00:04:59
or Central Defenders so we have three of
  • 00:05:01
our top players are Defenders and the
  • 00:05:03
rest of six or seven are going to be
  • 00:05:06
attackers Midfield we are a bit light
  • 00:05:09
and therefore we have to build our
  • 00:05:10
Midfield based on the fact that at the
  • 00:05:12
moment we are a little bit light going
  • 00:05:14
into our first game in the championship
  • 00:05:17
we also don't have any money and so just
  • 00:05:19
buying players is not going to be an
  • 00:05:21
option for us we do have a spr who is
  • 00:05:23
one of our best players if not our best
  • 00:05:25
player he's wanted could bring in 10 or
  • 00:05:27
12 million we don't know what's going to
  • 00:05:29
happen and there until that happens we
  • 00:05:31
really just have to focus on building a
  • 00:05:33
team with what we've got so that's what
  • 00:05:35
we're going to do and as th we've just
  • 00:05:37
found out we are pretty good in attack
  • 00:05:39
and that's probably where we need to
  • 00:05:42
focus when we start building our tactic
  • 00:05:45
and as we said before we're going to
  • 00:05:47
build a very very simple tactic and
  • 00:05:49
therefore we're going to go with what
  • 00:05:50
the game recommends in terms of how this
  • 00:05:52
team should play and it's given us three
  • 00:05:53
options I don't really like Wing play I
  • 00:05:56
definitely don't want to be playing
  • 00:05:57
route one so we're going to go with a
  • 00:05:59
flu fluid Counterattack this don't worry
  • 00:06:01
about this this is just a setting up how
  • 00:06:04
we want to play we are going to alter
  • 00:06:06
this and change it it's not going to be
  • 00:06:08
the finished product we're not going to
  • 00:06:10
be playing in a cautious mentality so
  • 00:06:13
we're going to choose that and now we'll
  • 00:06:14
go to a formation bearing in mind that
  • 00:06:16
we are good up front and that we are
  • 00:06:18
good in defense the problem that I have
  • 00:06:21
with a 4-33 is that we may not be good
  • 00:06:23
enough in central Midfield so I'm going
  • 00:06:25
to go with a 4231 this is a much more
  • 00:06:27
attacking option and because most of our
  • 00:06:29
players are better up front than they
  • 00:06:31
are anywhere else on the pitch we're
  • 00:06:33
going to go with that and we're going to
  • 00:06:35
click confirm and we are going to set up
  • 00:06:37
our team very very Loosely because I
  • 00:06:40
don't know the team I'm just going to
  • 00:06:42
ask my assistant to pick the without
  • 00:06:45
restriction to pick the entire team and
  • 00:06:48
to just put in what he thinks is
  • 00:06:50
probably going to be our best team now
  • 00:06:53
I'm going to go through this and I'm
  • 00:06:54
going to change some things because I'm
  • 00:06:55
probably not going to agree with him and
  • 00:06:58
so I don't want wing backs to be on
  • 00:07:00
automatic I do like the idea of playing
  • 00:07:03
with wing backs because we are going to
  • 00:07:05
be playing a little bit more positive
  • 00:07:07
rather than cautious bearing in mind
  • 00:07:09
that we are an attacking team we have a
  • 00:07:11
good attacking setup let's be positive
  • 00:07:14
and so we're going to go through these
  • 00:07:15
roles one by one and we're going to
  • 00:07:17
change this team just slightly I'm going
  • 00:07:19
to have a wing back on Support over on
  • 00:07:22
this side and I'll probably have a wing
  • 00:07:24
back on attack over on this side
  • 00:07:27
basically what we're going to do is BAS
  • 00:07:28
set up a very simple very very simple
  • 00:07:31
tactic and we're not going to play with
  • 00:07:33
    a ball playing Defender we're a
  • 00:07:35
championship team we're going to play
  • 00:07:36
with two Central Defenders on defend and
  • 00:07:39
that should hopefully be enough for us
  • 00:07:41
in terms of that looking at these two in
  • 00:07:44
Midfield we could I think the ball
  • 00:07:46
winner probably not a good idea for a
  • 00:07:49
championship team I'm going to play a
  • 00:07:52
defensive midfielder on this side and
  • 00:07:54
I'm going to play a deep line playmaker
  • 00:07:56
on this side I actually know that the um
  • 00:07:59
best player in that position is going to
  • 00:08:01
be lucer who is a very good deep line
  • 00:08:04
    playmaker for Championship level so
  • 00:08:06
that's going to be our Midfield sorted
  • 00:08:08
on this side I'm going to keep this as
  • 00:08:09
an inverted Winger on support and we're
  • 00:08:11
going to play a Winger on Attack on this
  • 00:08:14
side and then we are going to have keep
  • 00:08:16
that as an attacking Midfield on support
  • 00:08:18
nothing wrong with that as a role and
  • 00:08:21
Healey can stay as the advance forward
  • 00:08:24
on attack I think that the you can
  • 00:08:27
clearly now see that up front we are
  • 00:08:29
much stronger than we are at the back
  • 00:08:31
and so this is probably the best way to
  • 00:08:33
set up the tactic and so as you can see
  • 00:08:36
this is a very very basic tactic that we
  • 00:08:39
have set up we have given each of these
  • 00:08:42
    players some additional instructions to
  • 00:08:44
what the role says that they should do
  • 00:08:47
and that is based purely on what they
  • 00:08:49
can and cannot do as individuals and so
  • 00:08:52
for example this Wing back is asked to
  • 00:08:54
Mark tighter that is because he is
  • 00:08:56
capable of doing a little bit of marking
  • 00:08:58
I also want want him to sit narrower and
  • 00:09:00
to dribble less and to shoot less often
  • 00:09:03
just purely based on what he can and
  • 00:09:05
cannot do and the DLP another example
  • 00:09:08
here he's asked to close down more he
  • 00:09:10
can close down very nicely and he is
  • 00:09:13
capable of marking cannot tackle so he's
  • 00:09:15
not asked to tackle harder and neither
  • 00:09:18
is the DM who's marking and tackling
  • 00:09:20
isn't very good so he just has the job
  • 00:09:23
of just holding his position but he can
  • 00:09:26
pass and he does have very good Vision
  • 00:09:28
so I might ask him to take more risks
  • 00:09:31
when he is on the ball and so as you can
  • 00:09:34
see I've given them some very very
  • 00:09:36
simple instructions because I am playing
  • 00:09:38
a Winger on attack in this on this side
  • 00:09:42
then what I might do is play an inverted
  • 00:09:44
Wing back on this side this means that
  • 00:09:47
he will come into Midfield he will also
  • 00:09:49
be perhaps depending on high up the
  • 00:09:51
pitch we are playing be a nuisance in
  • 00:09:53
this area up here and because he is now
  • 00:09:56
playing as an inverted Wing back on
  • 00:09:58
support and playing in this area here
  • 00:10:00
what I might do is I will adjust the
  • 00:10:03
tactic and I'll put an underlap on the
  • 00:10:05
right what this will mean is that the
  • 00:10:07
Winger will then stop look for support
  • 00:10:10
inside and this might cause problems
  • 00:10:12
with the DM with the advanced midfielder
  • 00:10:15
and the inverted Wing back in this area
  • 00:10:17
    creating huge overloads so it's
  • 00:10:20
something that we can try at the
  • 00:10:21
beginning and if it doesn't work we can
  • 00:10:23
try something else and that's the
  • 00:10:25
essence of building a tactic we're going
  • 00:10:26
to look at how this works at the
  • 00:10:28
beginning and then we will see how it
  • 00:10:31
pans out now we want to put the team
  • 00:10:33
    instructions together because this is
  • 00:10:34
really really important and this is how
  • 00:10:36
we want the team to play and we're going
  • 00:10:38
to apply the principle of if you can't
  • 00:10:40
do it don't do it because we're going to
  • 00:10:42
base it on the attributes of the team
  • 00:10:46
and as you know every team has a bunch
  • 00:10:48
of attributes there are physicals there
  • 00:10:51
are mentals and there are technicals and
  • 00:10:53
we're going to base what the team can do
  • 00:10:55
on the team averages and how good they
  • 00:10:58
are as a team at performing that
  • 00:11:00
function and each one of these things is
  • 00:11:03
about whether the team is good whether
  • 00:11:05
the team is bad whether the team can do
  • 00:11:07
it whether the team can't do it and each
  • 00:11:10
one of these will have to be adjusted
  • 00:11:13
according to what the team can do so
  • 00:11:15
let's make a start and let's go first of
  • 00:11:18
all to the ones that we've done already
  • 00:11:20
and we'll start with the reverse
  • 00:11:22
engineering it now with the out of
  • 00:11:24
    possession
  • 00:11:25
screen and so we have already looked at
  • 00:11:28
this screen before and we're just going
  • 00:11:30
to reset this because we want it to be
  • 00:11:32
from a blank screen and we don't want to
  • 00:11:34
be have anything clicked at this point
  • 00:11:36
in time and so looking at this this is
  • 00:11:38
all wrong for me remember that the line
  • 00:11:41
of Engagement is really about how good
  • 00:11:43
your team is at being an absolute
  • 00:11:45
nuisance and getting the opposition to
  • 00:11:48
make mistakes in and where you would
  • 00:11:50
like the opposition to make mistakes so
  • 00:11:52
if they're very very good at getting the
  • 00:11:54
opposition to make mistakes then we want
  • 00:11:57
to have a higher line we want to put our
  • 00:11:59
line of Engagement as high as possible
  • 00:12:01
so that they make mistakes here and not
  • 00:12:04
down in our half of the pitch this will
  • 00:12:06
make us far more dangerous the defensive
  • 00:12:08
line is about how good or bad are
  • 00:12:10
defenses and How likely they are to make
  • 00:12:13
a lot of mistakes if we have a very very
  • 00:12:15
good def defense then we'll push the
  • 00:12:17
line up higher if we are not so good
  • 00:12:19
then we're going to have to bring the
  • 00:12:20
lines back a little bit because by
  • 00:12:22
bringing the line back a little bit it
  • 00:12:24
will serve two purposes firstly if they
  • 00:12:26
are pacy and can dribble it means that
  • 00:12:28
they will not find it so easy to get
  • 00:12:31
balls over the top and to skip past us
  • 00:12:34
we will be backing off a little bit in
  • 00:12:36
order to allow them space in front of us
  • 00:12:39
but also if we're not very good as
  • 00:12:41
Defenders then by reducing the line a
  • 00:12:44
little bit it will give us more time
  • 00:12:46
when we receive the ball and we can be a
  • 00:12:49
little bit more composed we can be have
  • 00:12:51
a little bit better control of the ball
  • 00:12:53
and distribute the the ball a lot more
  • 00:12:56
efficiently if we are too high up the
  • 00:12:58
pitch then what could happen is that we
  • 00:13:00
don't when receiving the ball our
  • 00:13:02
Defenders don't have a lot of time make
  • 00:13:04
mistakes and then suddenly we are giving
  • 00:13:07
the ball away and are very vulnerable at
  • 00:13:09
the back and so where we position this
  • 00:13:12
is also very very important trigger
  • 00:13:15
press is linked to how good we are at
  • 00:13:17
being a nuisance and How likely it is
  • 00:13:20
that we are going to get the opposition
  • 00:13:22
to make mistakes this now will be all
  • 00:13:24
over the pitch whereas this line of
  • 00:13:26
Engagement is just where we are going to
  • 00:13:28
engage them when we haven't got the ball
  • 00:13:31
and so this is going to be How likely
  • 00:13:33
are the opposition to make mistakes and
  • 00:13:36
how good are we at making them make
  • 00:13:38
mistakes as for these this is about
  • 00:13:41
whether or not we can tackle and this is
  • 00:13:44
really about compressing the Midfield do
  • 00:13:47
we need to compress the Midfield I
  • 00:13:49
always would like to stop the crosses
  • 00:13:51
unless I have all Defenders over 6'6
  • 00:13:54
that I'm going to want to stop crosses
  • 00:13:57
um particularly but full back are very
  • 00:13:59
vulnerable at the far posts and so I
  • 00:14:01
don't want crosses coming into my box
  • 00:14:03
even if I have got very tall Central
  • 00:14:05
Defenders let's just stop them and uh
  • 00:14:08
they don't always stop the crosses but
  • 00:14:10
we might as well try and if I do have a
  • 00:14:12
lower defensive line then I generally
  • 00:14:14
will step up more especially if I only
  • 00:14:15
have two in Midfield because we are
  • 00:14:18
light there then and it will need to
  • 00:14:20
push up to compress the space and to
  • 00:14:22
make sure their Midfield are not getting
  • 00:14:24
the opportunity to dominate the game and
  • 00:14:26
put balls in over the top through
  • 00:14:29
through balls through the middle and so
  • 00:14:31
I need to just check where these lines
  • 00:14:33
should be and as we as we saw before
  • 00:14:36
this is about how good we are at being a
  • 00:14:39
nuisance and so we have to know about
  • 00:14:41
how aggressive we are do we have good
  • 00:14:43
    acceleration do we anticipate situations
  • 00:14:46
well and do we have good decisions and
  • 00:14:48
so we will go to our Squad planner and
  • 00:14:50
we'll check that out and we'll go to the
  • 00:14:52
comparison screen and we are looking at
  • 00:14:55
the acceleration we do have decent
  • 00:14:58
acceleration it's not brilliant um and
  • 00:15:00
we do have um decent pace but it's not
  • 00:15:03
brilliant either we are quite strong and
  • 00:15:06
we are quite fit but and our work rate
  • 00:15:08
although for this league it's quite low
  • 00:15:10
our work rate is decent it's not too bad
  • 00:15:12
it just looks bad because of this graph
  • 00:15:15
but 12.15 for a championship team is
  • 00:15:17
actually decent work great it's not
  • 00:15:19
brilliant but it is decent a Premier
  • 00:15:22
League team a very good Premier League
  • 00:15:24
    team will have 14 between 14 and 15 12
  • 00:15:27
is not bad it does mean that they do
  • 00:15:30
have a little bit of work in them
  • 00:15:31
teamwork is a little bit of a concern
  • 00:15:33
that is not very good and their
  • 00:15:35
anticipation is not very good but they
  • 00:15:37
are very aggressive and this is quite
  • 00:15:39
important for a championship team if
  • 00:15:41
    they're aggressive then probably they
  • 00:15:43
will worry the team quite quite a lot
  • 00:15:46
and so I would say of this team that yes
  • 00:15:49
they are probably very capable of
  • 00:15:51
causing teams to make mistakes at the
  • 00:15:53
back and so a high line of Engagement is
  • 00:15:56
probably a good idea especially as we we
  • 00:15:58
are going to be playing in a very
  • 00:16:00
positive way because we want to attack
  • 00:16:02
rather than to defend our attack is
  • 00:16:04
better than our defense and um so we've
  • 00:16:07
sorted out we'll play with a high press
  • 00:16:10
and probably we will trigger press more
  • 00:16:12
often and depending on whether the
  • 00:16:14
goalkeeper is good or bad in terms of
  • 00:16:17
his passing and composure we will switch
  • 00:16:20
that on or off it will depend on the
  • 00:16:22
    opposition goalkeeper and our defensive
  • 00:16:24
line will be dependent on how good our
  • 00:16:27
defense is and how capable they are of
  • 00:16:30
not making mistakes and so we're going
  • 00:16:32
    to be looking at composure
  • 00:16:34
    decisions positioning
  • 00:16:38
    anticipation passing and dribbling and
  • 00:16:40
looking at the numbers for those
  • 00:16:43
    particular attributes and that will
  • 00:16:44
determine just where that line should be
  • 00:16:48
and so we will go to our Squad planner
  • 00:16:50
and we'll have a look at those
  • 00:16:51
attributes but this time we're only
  • 00:16:53
going to be looking at our Defenders
  • 00:16:55
it's our defensive line that we want to
  • 00:16:57
    make sure
  • 00:16:59
that have the attributes and so we're
  • 00:17:01
not going to include the goalkeepers or
  • 00:17:03
the midfielders and the strikers for
  • 00:17:05
this we're just going to measure it in
  • 00:17:07
terms of how good our Defenders are and
  • 00:17:09
we can clearly see that we have good
  • 00:17:11
balance our agility is decent but it's
  • 00:17:13
not great but our balance is very good
  • 00:17:15
which means that we might be able to
  • 00:17:16
turn quite quickly and couple that with
  • 00:17:19
    decent acceleration for Defenders and
  • 00:17:22
decent pace for Defenders we're not
  • 00:17:24
super quick but we might be okay in
  • 00:17:27
terms of playing a higher defensive line
  • 00:17:29
    and particularly impressive is our
  • 00:17:31
balance our natural Fitness at the back
  • 00:17:34
is good and we are quite strong so bear
  • 00:17:36
that in mind as we're thinking about
  • 00:17:38
where our line should be placed and in
  • 00:17:40
terms of our mentals abilities we are
  • 00:17:43
quite aggressive again uh our decisions
  • 00:17:45
are okay but we are not brave and our
  • 00:17:49
composure is pretty poor and our
  • 00:17:51
    concentration is pretty poor decision-
  • 00:17:54
making is pretty poor as well and we are
  • 00:17:57
in terms of mentals not looking that
  • 00:17:59
great our positioning is decent but it's
  • 00:18:02
not great and work great at the back is
  • 00:18:05
very good bearing in mind that 14 14 and
  • 00:18:07
a half would be very good for a Premier
  • 00:18:09
League team work great is quite good and
  • 00:18:11
a teamwork at the B is quite good which
  • 00:18:13
would mean that the offside would work
  • 00:18:16
but the rest of the mentals are telling
  • 00:18:19
me that perhaps we shouldn't be playing
  • 00:18:21
too high up the pitch and so in terms of
  • 00:18:24
our Pace our jumping reach our heading
  • 00:18:27
    and in our general ability
  • 00:18:29
and the how often we are likely to make
  • 00:18:31
mistakes what I'm going to do with this
  • 00:18:33
team is I'm going to have a standard
  • 00:18:35
line and I'm going to step up more and
  • 00:18:37
we're going to have space in the middle
  • 00:18:39
but by stepping up more we're asking our
  • 00:18:41
midfielders and the Defenders to just
  • 00:18:44
step up when the opposition have won the
  • 00:18:46
ball and try to close them down and we
  • 00:18:48
hopefully have players in Midfield who
  • 00:18:51
can close them down and therefore
  • 00:18:52
eliminate a problem but the whole point
  • 00:18:54
of this is that we're not going to be
  • 00:18:57
vulnerable to both balls over the top
  • 00:18:59
and we're going to give ourselves a
  • 00:19:00
little bit more time when we receive the
  • 00:19:03
ball in order to control it and
  • 00:19:05
distribute it efficiently and not make
  • 00:19:07
mistakes and give the ball away in very
  • 00:19:09
dangerous areas and so that part of the
  • 00:19:12
tactic this screen of the tactic the out
  • 00:19:14
of possession is done that's all we need
  • 00:19:16
to do and now we'll move on to the next
  • 00:19:19
one the in transition screen and in this
  • 00:19:22
screen we are pretty much looking at
  • 00:19:24
just a few things and we're looking at
  • 00:19:25
our ability to counter press to counter
  • 00:19:27
and how we want our goalkeeper to deal
  • 00:19:29
with the ball when he has it and we
  • 00:19:31
already know that our goalkeeper is poor
  • 00:19:33
at passing he has a poor throw he's not
  • 00:19:35
very good at kicking so I don't want him
  • 00:19:37
taking any risks at all so he can just
  • 00:19:39
roll it out to anyone who happens to be
  • 00:19:42
near him and that way we'll stop him
  • 00:19:44
from making mistakes at least he still
  • 00:19:46
probably will make them but at least
  • 00:19:48
we're going to attempt to stop him
  • 00:19:51
making mistakes in terms of our ability
  • 00:19:53
to counter we have to consider a few
  • 00:19:55
things firstly do we have enough pace
  • 00:19:57
    and acceleration ation to mount
  • 00:19:59
counterattacks are we good at off the
  • 00:20:01
ball and are we good with our passing
  • 00:20:03
and distribution is our vision good we
  • 00:20:05
are working off the principle of if you
  • 00:20:08
can't do it don't do it so we're going
  • 00:20:10
to go to our Squad planner again and
  • 00:20:11
we're going to have a look at our
  • 00:20:13
ability to counter attack and so if we
  • 00:20:16
think about the four things that we were
  • 00:20:17
thinking about the first one was well
  • 00:20:20
let's look at dribbling as well we're
  • 00:20:21
not very good at dribbling and our
  • 00:20:23
technique is not brilliant and if we
  • 00:20:25
look at our mentals um although we're
  • 00:20:27
quite aggressive and that does help when
  • 00:20:29
you are counterattacking we are not very
  • 00:20:32
composed we're not very determined and
  • 00:20:34
um our work great is poor our teamwork
  • 00:20:36
is poor and so it's not really looking
  • 00:20:39
that great off the ball is poor we are
  • 00:20:41
not the fastest of teams and our passing
  • 00:20:45
and our vision they're not great so it's
  • 00:20:49
probably not a good idea for us to be
  • 00:20:53
counterattacking and so we're going to
  • 00:20:55
leave that off we are not really that
  • 00:20:57
bad bearing in mind that we are
  • 00:20:58
predicted to finish in seventh we're not
  • 00:21:00
that bad that we need to hold our shape
  • 00:21:03
in case we get ourselves into trouble
  • 00:21:05
our defense are not that bad so we're
  • 00:21:07
going to keep that off but we are not
  • 00:21:09
going to Counterattack we will sometimes
  • 00:21:12
but we're not going to click
  • 00:21:13
    Counterattack and have players just
  • 00:21:15
going up the field willy-nilly and
  • 00:21:17
    leaving ourselves a little bit
  • 00:21:19
vulnerable at the back the counter press
  • 00:21:21
we already know we've already seen that
  • 00:21:24
we are not very good at counter counter
  • 00:21:27
pressing the position we're not very
  • 00:21:29
good at putting them under pressure and
  • 00:21:31
so we are going to leave the counter
  • 00:21:33
press off for now we're not going to
  • 00:21:35
regroup either but we're just going to
  • 00:21:37
leave it off now by leaving these two
  • 00:21:39
things off as we said in the last video
  • 00:21:41
it does not mean that we are not going
  • 00:21:43
to counter press and it does not mean
  • 00:21:44
that we are not going to Counterattack
  • 00:21:46
what it means is that we are going to be
  • 00:21:48
a little less frequent over it and
  • 00:21:51
    hopefully make decisions around whether
  • 00:21:53
or not it's a good idea to do it at the
  • 00:21:55
time and so we're not going to be
  • 00:21:58
as aggressive as we would be if those
  • 00:22:00
two things were on we're going to take
  • 00:22:02
our time and it does mean that probably
  • 00:22:04
create less chances but we're going to
  • 00:22:06
be safer at the back while doing it and
  • 00:22:09
then finally it brings us and so having
  • 00:22:12
established that we're going to do very
  • 00:22:13
little here that brings us to our first
  • 00:22:16
screen and how we are going to attack
  • 00:22:18
and this is something that we haven't
  • 00:22:19
seen before and just like every one of
  • 00:22:23
the boxes that we've looked at in the
  • 00:22:25
previous two screens this one is is no
  • 00:22:28
different and we're going to start with
  • 00:22:30
our passing style and we've already
  • 00:22:32
found out that we're not the greatest
  • 00:22:33
passing team in the world we're not the
  • 00:22:35
worst passing team in the world but
  • 00:22:37
we're not good we're just an average
  • 00:22:39
passing team and so in order to make the
  • 00:22:42
most of our ability to pass then we have
  • 00:22:44
to play at a lower Tempo so we're going
  • 00:22:46
to set that to slightly lower because we
  • 00:22:49
cannot pass and if we try to start
  • 00:22:52
flashing the ball around the pitch at
  • 00:22:54
speed we're going to be turning the ball
  • 00:22:56
over quite often so by by lowering the
  • 00:22:58
tempo we're going to be able to hold on
  • 00:23:01
to the ball now we could play with a
  • 00:23:02
slightly shorter or a little bit more
  • 00:23:05
direct but probably if we are going to
  • 00:23:07
play with a slightly lower Tempo I would
  • 00:23:09
like to play with a slightly shorter
  • 00:23:11
pass and to enable that to work a lot
  • 00:23:13
better I'm going to reduce the width of
  • 00:23:16
the pitch as well and so we're going to
  • 00:23:18
play a little bit shorter with a
  • 00:23:20
slightly lower Tempo and fairly narrow
  • 00:23:22
so that our passes are going to connect
  • 00:23:24
with each other and hopefully that's not
  • 00:23:27
going to put too much pressure on the
  • 00:23:29
boys we are going to time waste
  • 00:23:31
sometimes when we have Thro inss and
  • 00:23:33
corners and allow the team to settle and
  • 00:23:36
hopefully that will buy us a little bit
  • 00:23:38
more time as well I just don't want us
  • 00:23:40
rushing things and I want us to be able
  • 00:23:42
to keep the ball quite comfortably and
  • 00:23:44
so this if would effectively enable us
  • 00:23:48
because our passing is not the greatest
  • 00:23:50
this system would enable us to do that
  • 00:23:53
quite effectively if we are not good at
  • 00:23:56
passing then we are not going to be
  • 00:23:58
passing into space as well this will
  • 00:24:00
require good off the ball and it will
  • 00:24:02
require good Vision we have neither of
  • 00:24:05
those two things and so we are not going
  • 00:24:07
to pass it into space we're going to
  • 00:24:09
pass defeat and try and control
  • 00:24:11
possession we believe that would be the
  • 00:24:13
best way of playing with this and
  • 00:24:17
playing out of Defense would that be a
  • 00:24:18
good idea for Watford where we can go to
  • 00:24:21
the squad planner and have a look again
  • 00:24:23
at our comparison this time we're only
  • 00:24:25
going to pick the Defenders and we are
  • 00:24:27
going going to look at the defender's
  • 00:24:29
ability to pass the ball out and to
  • 00:24:32
maintain possession and so in order to
  • 00:24:34
be able to do that a composure is going
  • 00:24:36
to need to be good and so our Defender
  • 00:24:38
composure it's not bad it's not
  • 00:24:40
brilliant they will make mistakes their
  • 00:24:42
decisions is exactly the same and again
  • 00:24:45
they will probably end up making
  • 00:24:47
mistakes in terms of their technical
  • 00:24:49
ability to pass the ball is not very
  • 00:24:51
good and their vision is not very good
  • 00:24:53
as well so we don't really want to be
  • 00:24:55
passing the ball out of Defense we're
  • 00:24:57
going to make more mistakes than the
  • 00:24:58
worth of it if we attempt to do that if
  • 00:25:01
we look at our dribbling as and as an
  • 00:25:04
option to bring it out of Defense our
  • 00:25:06
Defenders have only got 9.7 dribbling
  • 00:25:08
it's not very good it's not a good idea
  • 00:25:11
to be playing the ball out of Defense in
  • 00:25:14
terms of our aerial ability and if we
  • 00:25:16
look at the strikers in terms of our
  • 00:25:19
aerial ability our jumping reach our
  • 00:25:22
heading ability is 12 which is decent
  • 00:25:24
but it's not good and our jumping reach
  • 00:25:27
for the strikers is 10.67 it's not very
  • 00:25:30
good and so probably not a good idea to
  • 00:25:33
be floating crosses into the box and so
  • 00:25:36
with that information in mind we're not
  • 00:25:38
going to be playing out of defense and
  • 00:25:40
we're not going to be floating crosses I
  • 00:25:42
want them putting low crosses into the
  • 00:25:45
box to feat whether or not to play Work
  • 00:25:48
the ball into the box well that is going
  • 00:25:49
to be about our ability to finish and
  • 00:25:52
let's go and have a look at our ability
  • 00:25:53
to finish and um that will be in our
  • 00:25:56
technical abilities .67 we are not the
  • 00:25:59
best finishers in the world neither do
  • 00:26:02
we have a great long shot and neither is
  • 00:26:04
    our
  • 00:26:05
    composure exceptionally good either so
  • 00:26:09
it's probably not a good idea to be
  • 00:26:11
taking long pings from outside the box
  • 00:26:14
so I want them to work the ball into the
  • 00:26:16
box do I want them to run at the defense
  • 00:26:19
no I've already seen that their
  • 00:26:20
dribbling is very poor I would like them
  • 00:26:23
to dribble less and this one I will
  • 00:26:25
leave uh as it is at the moment because
  • 00:26:27
I don't know whether we need to be more
  • 00:26:29
disciplined or whether I need them to be
  • 00:26:31
more expressive so at the moment I will
  • 00:26:34
leave that one blank playing for set
  • 00:26:36
pieces will depend on a number of issues
  • 00:26:38
I don't have great set piece takers what
  • 00:26:41
is the point of playing for set pieces
  • 00:26:43
and that basically is how we are going
  • 00:26:45
to set up our tactic it's very very
  • 00:26:47
simple it's not very intensive and uh
  • 00:26:50
looking at it though it is a problem
  • 00:26:52
that they are not familiar with the way
  • 00:26:54
that we've set them up and that probably
  • 00:26:56
means that we're going going to have a
  • 00:26:58
bad start to the season or it won't be
  • 00:27:00
an extremely good start to the season
  • 00:27:02
but it is a way that they can play and
  • 00:27:05
we've based it all on what they can and
  • 00:27:08
cannot do and so out of possession this
  • 00:27:11
is about how able they are to play at
  • 00:27:14
the back and whether or not they will
  • 00:27:15
make lots of mistakes we've set it at
  • 00:27:17
standard we also are going to worry them
  • 00:27:20
and press them up here a little bit in
  • 00:27:22
order to try and make them to make
  • 00:27:24
mistakes but we don't want to be
  • 00:27:25
    constantly counter pressing because
  • 00:27:27
we're not capable in terms of our work
  • 00:27:29
rate especially to do that we don't want
  • 00:27:31
to be counterattacking and getting out
  • 00:27:33
of shape all the time but we don't want
  • 00:27:35
to be just holding our shape we are
  • 00:27:37
going to play positive we're going to
  • 00:27:38
play narrow and try to hold on to the
  • 00:27:41
ball our passing is good enough to hold
  • 00:27:43
on to the ball but only probably at a
  • 00:27:45
lower Tempo and we will play the work
  • 00:27:48
the ball into the box we'll do low
  • 00:27:50
crosses and dribble less and that is a
  • 00:27:52
very very simple tactic that we have set
  • 00:27:54
up now I think we should go and have a
  • 00:27:56
look at how we have got on and so this
  • 00:28:01
is where we came in the first game of
  • 00:28:03
the championship season and as you can
  • 00:28:05
see we have played eight games now in
  • 00:28:08
all competitions we have won seven of
  • 00:28:11
them and we have drawn one we were very
  • 00:28:13
unlucky in that Birmingham game we were
  • 00:28:15
had an international break here for two
  • 00:28:17
    weeks and unfortunately all our
  • 00:28:19
midfielders came back extremely tired so
  • 00:28:22
when we lined up for the game against
  • 00:28:23
Birmingham on Midfield was out on its
  • 00:28:26
feet still got a very creditable one-1
  • 00:28:28
draw though Birmingham are a good team
  • 00:28:30
and we got a one-1 draw and we are doing
  • 00:28:32
particularly well we are top of the
  • 00:28:34
league we've played six one5 in the
  • 00:28:36
league drawn one and lost none we've not
  • 00:28:38
lost all season in terms of the tactic
  • 00:28:41
these Squad are now a lot more familiar
  • 00:28:43
having played eight games or so they've
  • 00:28:45
got themselves knowing exactly how we
  • 00:28:47
want them to play and what is extremely
  • 00:28:50
exciting is that we are the best team in
  • 00:28:52
the league in terms of attacking
  • 00:28:54
potential and we are the best team once
  • 00:28:56
again in in the league in terms of goals
  • 00:28:58
conceded everything's on track for a
  • 00:29:00
very very good season here at Watford
  • 00:29:03
but in order to become the very very
  • 00:29:06
best team and we doing this consistently
  • 00:29:08
with this methodology whether it be with
  • 00:29:11
knots County Arsenal whether it be with
  • 00:29:14
hoshima or in now Watford we are
  • 00:29:16
consistently doing it but there is one
  • 00:29:18
more thing that we need to do and we are
  • 00:29:20
preparing on a game to game basis and
  • 00:29:23
what we need to be able to do is to
  • 00:29:25
interpret the information that we get in
  • 00:29:28
this screen here which is a comparison
  • 00:29:31
between ourselves and the opposition and
  • 00:29:34
I will assess use this to assess the
  • 00:29:35
    strengths and weaknesses of the
  • 00:29:37
opposition it's rather like pitting them
  • 00:29:39
attack versus defense so I'm going to do
  • 00:29:41
one more video on that screen and how I
  • 00:29:43
use that in conjunction with the team
  • 00:29:45
report and so that's it for this episode
  • 00:29:48
we will be looking at that screen in the
  • 00:29:51
next one and if you do want to have an
  • 00:29:54
explanation of how you set in individual
  • 00:29:58
player instructions based on how you
  • 00:30:00
want to play and what they're capable of
  • 00:30:02
doing then I'll do a video on that if
  • 00:30:04
you want a video on setting up
  • 00:30:07
individual instructions let me know in
  • 00:30:09
the comments and I'll put one together
  • 00:30:11
but that's it for now and if you are
  • 00:30:13
brand new to the channel then why not
  • 00:30:15
subscribe give us a like and when you're
  • 00:30:17
subscribing hit the notification Bell so
  • 00:30:20
that you'll be updated whenever we
  • 00:30:22
upload future videos in the next video
  • 00:30:25
we will be looking at that comparison
  • 00:30:26
screen and how we used that and The
  • 00:30:28
Scouting Report to set up for individual
  • 00:30:32
games and all that remains to be said
  • 00:30:34
now is stay safe take care we'll see you
  • 00:30:37
    in the next video
