00:00:00
namaskar hello and welcome to P gurus
00:00:02
Channel I'm your host Shri joining me
00:00:04
today is utso chakrabarti as we take a
00:00:06
closer look at how Indian Americans
00:00:08
voted in the recently concluded us
00:00:11
elections to know all that and more
00:00:13
let's welcome utsav chakrabarti but
00:00:15
before that please like this video and

Namar
00:00:23
Namaste I'm doing
00:00:25
good so um this this is a game that I
00:00:28
play with every every gu make sure that
00:00:30
they are on their toes switch languages
00:00:32
on them and see how they respond it just
00:00:35
gives a little bit of banter and fun so
00:00:38
G I requested you to put together like a
00:00:41
five point uh uh summary of how the
00:00:44
indian-americans voted people say it's
00:00:46
between four to 4.6 million
00:00:48
indian-americans who can vote in US
00:00:50
elections and about 50% typically vote
00:00:53
so let's say around number of two
00:00:54
million people voted actually voted so
00:00:57
I'm going to let you talk to your slide
00:00:59
de that you brilliantly put together and
00:01:01
then we can take it from there so I'm
00:01:03
just bringing it up now here we go over
00:01:05
to
00:01:06
you so sh something that is very
00:01:09
interesting in this election is that
00:01:11
there is already a lot of conversation
00:01:13
going on about the shift in the
00:01:16
indian-american or as I would call it
00:01:18
American Hindu vote because most of them
00:01:20
are American citizens uh all of them are
00:01:23
American citizens if they voted and and
00:01:26
how the votes made a difference and uh I
00:01:29
think there has been been a major shift
00:01:31
it could be as high as 12% or so in
00:01:34
across the country in terms of the
00:01:35
people who voted who shifted towards
00:01:38
Trump and what is interesting is that
00:01:40
not only has that made difference big
00:01:42
difference in the Battleground States
00:01:44
you know the states that flipped pretty
00:01:47
much all all over to the Trump side but
00:01:50
even in places like California uh New
00:01:52
York New Jersey uh Maryland places which
00:01:56
otherwise are blue States but have
00:01:58
significant Indian American or American
00:02:01
Hindu communities in them there was a
00:02:03
big shift in the number of votes pulled
00:02:05
towards the Republicans so all in all uh
00:02:09
I do believe that the the shift in the
00:02:11
vote from the indian-american side made
00:02:13
a huge difference in favor of the
00:02:15
Republicans uh and a lot of people
00:02:18
including many
00:02:20
Democrats are in disbelief first because
00:02:24
they never believed that this could
00:02:25
happen to this level there was a small
00:02:27
shift happening many people knew that
00:02:29
but this degree of shift they never
00:02:31
expected it and so many of them are
00:02:33
trying to figure out why it happened
00:02:35
besides the usual you know tripe of oh
00:02:38
they hate women and you know everybody
00:02:40
hates women kind of if you filter out
00:02:42
that uh narrative I think the we the
00:02:46
Democrats need to understand and they
00:02:47
are reaching out to us including to
00:02:49
Hindu action uh to figure out what's the
00:02:52
community's analysis you know what what
00:02:54
people like us who usually work within
00:02:57
the community uh felt and why this ch
00:02:59
change happened so I thought it's
00:03:01
important that we discuss this
00:03:03
absolutely the first one you mentioned
00:03:05
is the constant hounding and harassment
00:03:07
of Hindus correct that was a huge deal
00:03:12
uh most people did not understand most
00:03:14
people in the current White House most
00:03:16
people in the Democratic party
00:03:19
leadership including those who are of
00:03:21
Indian origin or are of Hindu origin did
00:03:23
not pay attention to the anger within
00:03:26
the community and trust me you you know
00:03:29
it takes a lot to make our community
00:03:30
pissed off uh so the the the anger
00:03:34
within the community was palpable so two
00:03:37
things I believe made a clear def you
00:03:40
know clear demarcation and made the
00:03:43
American Hindu Community feel that they
00:03:45
were being targeted the first is the is
00:03:48
the raid on the baps Mand in Robinsville
00:03:50
uh you New Jersey for you know many of
00:03:53
your viewers are fully aware of this
00:03:55
within four months of the Biden Harris
00:03:57
Administration in 2020
00:04:00
the Mand the the largest Hindu Mand in
00:04:03
the Western Hemisphere the Robinsville
00:04:05
baps Mand was raided by SWAT teams so
00:04:10
and it happened within the first four
00:04:11
months of the new new Administration
00:04:13
coming so there was amongst the baps
00:04:16
Community amongst the Gujarati community
00:04:18
and largely amongst the Hindu Community
00:04:20
there was this this understanding that
00:04:22
this was brewing up and it was a
00:04:25
premeditated as if like let's come to
00:04:27
power and do something uh approach
00:04:29
approach to this issue and I think that
00:04:32
made made quite a bit of difference and
00:04:34
it put fear in the minds of the American
00:04:36
Hindus to cap that off you know to top
00:04:39
it off further after the new
00:04:42
Administration came there was a series
00:04:43
of movements around America all led by
00:04:46
democrats all left by the extreme Fringe
00:04:49
the left Fringe of the Democrats first
00:04:51
in Seattle then in California and then
00:04:53
in many other places to designate
00:04:55
American Hindus and you know trap them
00:04:57
under the so-called cast narrative and
00:05:00
SB 403 was the culmination of that
00:05:02
effort in California and and for those
00:05:05
of you who have been following that it
00:05:08
almost reached a within a hair's length
00:05:10
of becoming a law and you know Governor
00:05:13
Gavin knew some vetoed it at the last
00:05:15
moment because it was so against the law
00:05:17
that it wouldn't have stood scrutiny in
00:05:19
the courts but the fact that SB 403 made
00:05:22
it that far uh also created a lot of
00:05:27
anger in the minds of the Hindus it was
00:05:28
so blatantly anti- India and anti- IND
00:05:31
indianamerican and anti-hindu that the
00:05:34
community really took a step back and it
00:05:36
was not just the Hindu community in
00:05:38
California which obviously was at the
00:05:39
Forefront of the of the brunt of this
00:05:42
attack but it was the Hindu Community
00:05:45
across the country which responded
00:05:47
because it felt that this is a creeping
00:05:50
attack and a creeping uh you know
00:05:52
discrimination that was spreading all
00:05:54
across the country and the Democrats
00:05:56
fully embraced it and that was the
00:05:59
reason why I believe that there was a
00:06:01
big section of the community who
00:06:02
genuinely questioned their allegiance to
00:06:04
the party and almost felt helpless at
00:06:08
their predicament because many people
00:06:10
across the country uh from Indian origin
00:06:12
have been lifelong Democrats and you
00:06:15
know as a community organizer as an
00:06:17
organ you know as a leader of Hindu
00:06:20
action I meet people across the country
00:06:22
and because you know we are nonpartisan
00:06:24
so we we we are equally friendly with
00:06:26
both supporters of both the parties and
00:06:29
that was the main message we got from
00:06:31
the people who were Democrats that I
00:06:33
spent 30 years being a Democrat but I
00:06:36
can't stand it anymore and that was that
00:06:39
was the reason I believe the so the
00:06:41
first point I think is very important if
00:06:43
any Democrat thought leader in DC or
00:06:46
anywhere is listening they should pay
00:06:47
attention to this and now the next point
00:06:51
that you pointed out is the willful
00:06:53
neglect of legal immigrants from India I
00:06:56
had the pleasure of Congressman rajak
00:06:58
krishnam morti come on my Channel and he
00:07:01
jokingly said that the wait time for
00:07:04
green card for Indians now is 100
00:07:08
years 100 years I mean that means that
00:07:11
you are not going to get green card
00:07:12
period and then I also brought up the
00:07:15
issue of children who have turned 18 but
00:07:18
they were not born in the United States
00:07:20
and if the parents don't have a green
00:07:22
card then they get stuck in limbo they
00:07:24
have to return back to their Homeland
00:07:26
which means the family gets split
00:07:28
usually the mother takes the children
00:07:30
back to uh India and uh this is
00:07:33
something that needs to be fixed and he
00:07:35
said well this is what we call as
00:07:37
documented dreamers daa is undocumented
00:07:42
dreamers this is documented dreamers I'm
00:07:45
like you know dude do something about it
00:07:48
I didn't say that I was being nice to
00:07:50
Congressman rajak Krishna MTI if he's
00:07:52
watching or if his team is watching I
00:07:53
mean I felt a little you know funny
00:07:56
about the way that conversation was
00:07:58
going because years is come on now and
00:08:02
and who who amongst them made sure that
00:08:05
that would not get shortened they should
00:08:08
they should introspect there are many
00:08:09
Democrats who didn't want that to happen
00:08:11
they didn't want to reduce the wait time
00:08:13
for Indians to something more reasonable
00:08:15
like five years maybe even five years is
00:08:18
too long in my opinion so anyway so you
00:08:20
your take on what is happening about
00:08:23
this neglect of illegal legal immigrants
00:08:27
in from India
00:08:29
yes so you know as somebody who himself
00:08:32
you know I I came here as a student I I
00:08:35
worked on H1 Visa I was an H1 visa for
00:08:38
14 years before you know my green card
00:08:41
came so I personally know the Pains of
00:08:44
the the the suffering pains and the
00:08:46
sufferings of the indian-american
00:08:47
community in terms of the Visa Green
00:08:49
Card weight line and you know and it
00:08:51
gets worse you know I am not I I am on
00:08:55
I'm okay now because you know I got it
00:08:57
10 years ago but now people are still
00:08:59
still suffering so what I felt in this
00:09:02
situation happened was there were
00:09:04
Congress members from the
00:09:06
indian-american community from the
00:09:07
American Hindu Community who tried to
00:09:09
solve this people like Raja people like
00:09:11
Rana people like sh tanar they tried to
00:09:15
help the community out but they were
00:09:17
just powerless and at a time when kamla
00:09:20
Harris was the white president and and
00:09:23
she was in the White House it would have
00:09:25
taken very little a couple of executive
00:09:29
orders
00:09:30
to fix this or to at least reduce the
00:09:32
suffering for the people and in four
00:09:35
years those executive orders never came
00:09:38
it did not require a comprehensive
00:09:40
immigration Bill to fix all the problems
00:09:43
some of these problems for you know
00:09:45
especially the legal uh the dala as as
00:09:48
as you call it the children of the legal
00:09:50
immigrants they had to pay international
00:09:53
fees at universities because now they
00:09:54
are stud on a student visa after living
00:09:56
in that state for 15 years growing up in
00:09:59
in California for 15 years going to
00:10:02
school there and then now paying as an
00:10:04
international student fees uh and being
00:10:06
on student visa so that tragedy was
00:10:09
never addressed despite all the powers
00:10:12
that the White House had to address it
00:10:14
and I think the community a big section
00:10:17
of the community could not look away
00:10:20
from it especially the responsibility
00:10:21
that vice president Harris could have
00:10:23
taken in this regard and it was not like
00:10:25
they didn't know about it there were
00:10:27
enough people in the community informing
00:10:29
them beseeching them to do something
00:10:31
absolute silence uh so that I think was
00:10:34
a big big issue and I can tell you that
00:10:37
that issue needs to be solved quickly
00:10:39
and I hope that the the Republican uh
00:10:42
team that is coming right now even
00:10:44
though president Trump has been quite
00:10:45
open about saying that legal immigrants
00:10:48
especially those who go to universities
00:10:49
in America should get green card as
00:10:52
quickly as possible and all of them have
00:10:54
been making positive noise you know VI
00:10:56
has been making positive noise obviously
00:10:58
uh Elon Musk has been quite supportive
00:11:00
of legal immigrants so it needs to be
00:11:02
seen how the current the coming
00:11:04
Administration addresses it but I think
00:11:06
the Democrats miss the bus by a mile on
00:11:09
this one and it was tragic it was almost
00:11:11
as if they made an extra effort not to
00:11:13
address this issue then just miss it so
00:11:17
that that was very bad on their part um
00:11:20
the next one you said is growth in
00:11:22
perception that Biden Harris aligned
00:11:24
with non-government entities like Soros
00:11:28
correct so that was a that is a global
00:11:30
perception and and it's not just F
00:11:33
related to India it's related to Europe
00:11:35
like you know Hungary has been very
00:11:37
vocal about this as a country there are
00:11:40
they also banned
00:11:42
him yeah so so so India has been a
00:11:46
victim of that and there was a growing
00:11:49
perception within America that much of
00:11:51
the anti-hindu activism going on in
00:11:53
America by nonprofits that are closely
00:11:57
linked to the Democrats where being
00:12:00
greenlighted by billionaires like Soros
00:12:04
and and you know I I can go into one
00:12:06
hour conversation on it on its own but
00:12:09
and we have done that in the past but I
00:12:12
genuinely believe that the big section
00:12:14
of the community felt that this is
00:12:16
something that the Democrats could have
00:12:17
avoided or at least tried to balance it
00:12:20
out but they did never did so Point
00:12:23
number one which you know which is a
00:12:26
which is the biggest reason in my
00:12:27
opinion that and point number three are
00:12:29
interconnected and people felt like
00:12:31
Point number one was being driven by the
00:12:34
point number three and that led to Big
00:12:37
alienation within the community and even
00:12:39
those Hindus American Hindus or Indian
00:12:42
Americans who were part of the Biden
00:12:45
haris team who had access to their to
00:12:47
their ears you know who travel with them
00:12:49
on on Air Force One in private would
00:12:53
Express their inability to impress upon
00:12:55
the leadership because they were like
00:12:57
okay well some in New York or some
00:13:00
billionaire somewhere who runs a big
00:13:02
nonprofit is overruling our concerns and
00:13:06
that also I have heard from people so so
00:13:08
that was something that that was not
00:13:10
taken well by the community even even
00:13:12
their own allies within the Democratic
00:13:14
Party from the indian-american community
00:13:16
uh felt exasperated by this this
00:13:20
situation um next one is Rise of
00:13:23
American Hindus in the Republican
00:13:25
leadership yes and uh and and this is
00:13:28
where very openly visible now I mean
00:13:30
most people can see this it was a series
00:13:32
of events that made people feel that the
00:13:35
Republicans despite their you know being
00:13:38
Infamous of not being a party that is
00:13:40
open to diversity uh of certainly having
00:13:43
people who are more white supremacist uh
00:13:45
more Christian right-wing leaning having
00:13:48
said all of those things the fact that
00:13:50
VI ramaswami who did face discrimination
00:13:53
within the party but remained relevant
00:13:56
and a very powerful voice in the
00:13:58
Republican leadership that was part of
00:14:01
the Trump team and VI ramaswami was a
00:14:04
very you know he was quite open about
00:14:05
being a proud Hindu that along with the
00:14:08
fact that JD van Vance's wife was a
00:14:11
practicing Hindu and Usha Vance was
00:14:14
highlighted by the Republicans know all
00:14:16
of them face discrimination too I agree
00:14:18
to that but the fact that they were
00:14:20
embraced by the leadership along with of
00:14:23
course in the end Tuli gabard who is who
00:14:25
is a very proud Hindu who has been on
00:14:26
record saying that Democrats have
00:14:28
discriminated against her on the basis
00:14:30
of her faith being embraced by Trump
00:14:32
himself in the last days of the campaign
00:14:34
all of these made an impact and those
00:14:37
American Indian Americans or those
00:14:39
American Hindus who were kind of on the
00:14:42
edge you know who had experien or who
00:14:45
have narratives being fed to them that
00:14:47
the Republicans are discriminatory
00:14:49
against Hindus or Indians you know all
00:14:51
those people kind of stepped a little
00:14:54
bit towards the Republican side even
00:14:55
more after they saw these young leaders
00:14:57
come up and rised to the stage with
00:15:00
Trump and I think that made a big
00:15:02
difference you know I particularly like
00:15:05
the Poise he exhibited Vive Ras Swami
00:15:08
when he was confronted by people were
00:15:09
actually very hostile in their
00:15:12
description of the Hinduism religion
00:15:14
corre and he was very very poised and he
00:15:17
made sure that his answer actually hit
00:15:20
home it was it takes some you know you
00:15:22
have to think on your feet to come up
00:15:23
with the right answer that will resonate
00:15:26
with the viewer who had some you know
00:15:29
preconceived notions about the whole
00:15:30
thing so I really like the way he
00:15:32
handled all those things and he never
00:15:34
shered away from admitting that he was a
00:15:37
Hindu and he was proud of being a Hindu
00:15:39
and that that makes a big difference in
00:15:41
fact he raised the intellectual
00:15:43
discourse to a new level and you know I
00:15:47
you know at one time we even tweeted
00:15:49
that the way VI responds to the attacks
00:15:52
on him and his Hindu Faith reminded us
00:15:56
of the earlier days when when Scholars
00:15:58
of ad and Vish and different schools of
00:16:01
Hindu and Jane and both both the
00:16:03
philosophies would debate each other and
00:16:06
raise the discourse at the to the
00:16:08
philosophical level I mean his responses
00:16:10
were so well made and you know people
00:16:12
may like to hear that or not like to
00:16:14
hear that but that's what we are all
00:16:16
proud of and I think that made an impact
00:16:18
that made an impact not just on
00:16:20
indian-americans but also on mainstream
00:16:22
Americans uh for every you know white
00:16:25
supremacist nut case who questioned VI
00:16:28
on his ideas and his faith and his
00:16:30
background there were 10 others non-
00:16:33
Indians in in some red State who became
00:16:36
his fans and I think that that made an
00:16:39
impact in the in the community and
00:16:41
lastly out of control
00:16:43
Dei spooked the new
00:16:47
liberals correct so that I felt a lot
00:16:50
most liberal I'm sorry the most Li sorry
00:16:52
the most liberal amongst the
00:16:53
indian-americans so you know younger
00:16:56
people tend tend to be more liberal they
00:16:58
need you know when they go to
00:16:59
universities they're obviously they're
00:17:00
starting off from a left of center
00:17:02
position uh lot of younger people felt
00:17:06
the effect of
00:17:07
Dei in their college admissions they
00:17:10
felt the effect of Dei after graduating
00:17:12
from college and it hit them home they
00:17:16
may have been liberal on many other
00:17:17
issues they may have been super liberal
00:17:19
on you know and were quite against Trump
00:17:22
in many cases but when the super Dei
00:17:26
narrative hit their personal lives their
00:17:29
you know bank accounts HIIT their
00:17:32
pockets they kind of started questioning
00:17:34
the rest of the narratives that were
00:17:35
being fed to them and I think many young
00:17:39
indian-americans uh shifted or at least
00:17:41
became sympathetic towards the
00:17:43
Republicans after their personal you
00:17:46
know hatred and the personal
00:17:47
discriminations they face based on
00:17:49
Dei thank you so much viewers I hope you
00:17:52
got a gist of what the Indian American
00:17:54
voter was thinking before he voted or
00:17:56
she voted in the 2024 elections is this
00:17:59
going to continue perhaps yes because
00:18:01
the interesting study the analysis of
00:18:03
the vot says that the older the Indian
00:18:07
American the more the preponderance that
00:18:09
that person voted for the Democrat the
00:18:11
younger ones de voted for the
00:18:13
Republicans so this is not good news for
00:18:15
the Democrats we will leave it at that
00:18:17
we are as always like you said we have
00:18:19
our ears open anyone wants to come and
00:18:21
talk to us about where where they stand
00:18:23
and how they would like to steer the
00:18:25
Democratic party or the Republican party
00:18:27
for that matter we are always is open at
00:18:29
