- 00:01:54serves as the board of various companies
- 00:01:56across the globe including the global

- 00:02:05have such an
- 00:02:07iconic person like yourself here in

- 00:02:23of your stay Madrid so Jeff I wanted to
- 00:02:26jump in and how did you start like like
- 00:02:29going back back the the furthest where
- 00:02:32you kind of Lemonade Stand entrepreneur
- 00:02:35almost so I I will tell you because I
- 00:02:36grew up uh in the United States in the
- 00:02:39Arizona desert um but I had a single mom
- 00:02:43uh who had four kids and three jobs
- 00:02:46right never had any money um so as a kid
- 00:02:49um I never knew the word entrepreneur or
- 00:02:51anything what what it was was like for
- 00:02:54example I played every sport and when
- 00:02:56the season changes and the sport changes
- 00:02:58from basketball uh to football you need
- 00:03:01different shoes and Equipment but I
- 00:03:02didn't want to ask my mother who didn't
- 00:03:04have money so what I would do was find a
- 00:03:06way to make money I would literally I
- 00:03:09literally remember one time as a child I
- 00:03:11walked to somebody's house knocked on
- 00:03:14their door and he said can I help you
- 00:03:16and I said your garage is embarrassing
- 00:03:18and he said what and I said your garage
- 00:03:21it's a mess you never clean it it's
- 00:03:22embarrassing and he said you knocked on
- 00:03:25my door to tell me my my my house is
- 00:03:27embarrassing and I said yes and and I
- 00:03:29said you ever going to clean it and then
- 00:03:31his wife came to the door she said who
- 00:03:33is that isn't that the kid from down the
- 00:03:34street I saides she said what do you
- 00:03:35want and I said you guys never clean
- 00:03:38your garage and she says to her husband
- 00:03:40you need to clean it already and he said
- 00:03:42it's too hot out I said I'll do it for
- 00:03:43$20 so that's always I was trying to
- 00:03:47make money so I didn't have to ask my
- 00:03:49mother um and then I started to realize
- 00:03:51that entrepreneurship never heard the
- 00:03:53word but there's a relationship between
- 00:03:55wanting something working really hard
- 00:03:58and doing something someone will pay you
- 00:03:59for pay you for so that's the formula
- 00:04:02but I I learned it young wow and just to
- 00:04:05actually jump into the the analogy I
- 00:04:07made with lonardo Vinci and and yourself
- 00:04:10which it's amazing how how do you manage
- 00:04:12like you just said that you you played
- 00:04:14every sport is this something that has
- 00:04:17accompied you in your more or less DNA
- 00:04:19to wanting to excel in difference and
- 00:04:21why or what motivates you yes but
- 00:04:22there's a really important well I I
- 00:04:24think there's a couple factors um one is
- 00:04:27probably a little bit of add I guess
- 00:04:29right I can't stay I can't just do one
- 00:04:32thing for too long uh because then I
- 00:04:34start to get bored um but more it's that
- 00:04:37that's the negative the positive side um
- 00:04:40is and this is what I always encourage
- 00:04:42people to be especially entrepreneurs my
- 00:04:43favorite entrepreneurs are lifelong
- 00:04:46Learners they're curious right and so I
- 00:04:49have a I have a a TED Talk out there and
- 00:04:51it's called The Power of childlike
- 00:04:52Wonder right 5-year-olds try to ask you
- 00:04:55a million questions why do we have to go
- 00:04:57to the store why do we need food why do
- 00:04:58we why do we have to eat why will we die
- 00:05:01if we don't eat 5-year-olds never stop
- 00:05:03asking you questions my favorite adults
- 00:05:05and the most successful entrepreneurs
- 00:05:07are the ones that don't lose that
- 00:05:09childlike curiosity how does that work
- 00:05:12and so that I think for me was the
- 00:05:14driver I always wondered about
- 00:05:15everything and instead of wondering why
- 00:05:16don't you just go try I'll go try this
- 00:05:19new thing so all along I always wondered
- 00:05:22about music the process of creating a
- 00:05:24song the process of making a movie the
- 00:05:27process of creating a television show in
- 00:05:29addition to creating products as an
- 00:05:31entrepreneur so creating having a space
- 00:05:34to let your curiosity drive you and try
- 00:05:36stuff right the worst thing in life is
- 00:05:39not failing the worst thing in life is
- 00:05:41in not trying because then you spend
- 00:05:42your whole life wondering if that would
- 00:05:44have worked so I've always been curious
- 00:05:47I've always liked learning and I've
- 00:05:48always said I'm just going to go find
- 00:05:50out how that works and a lot of my
- 00:05:52favorite sort of business Role Models uh
- 00:05:54that became friends like um like Steve
- 00:05:57gnak from Apple right I noticed W is
- 00:06:00always saying I wonder how that
- 00:06:02everything he sees he's wondering about
- 00:06:04it another friend of mine Nolan Bushnell
- 00:06:06he's the inventor of video games right
- 00:06:08Atari was his company Nolan and I were
- 00:06:11sitting at a we were doing media after
- 00:06:13we both spoke at something and we were
- 00:06:15sitting in someone's office waiting for
- 00:06:17the cameras to come and all of a sudden
- 00:06:19I looked down and he took apart
- 00:06:21something on this person's desk I said
- 00:06:24what are you Nolan what are you doing I
- 00:06:25said this is not your office and he said
- 00:06:27I'm trying to figure out how this thing
- 00:06:29works I said okay but you took apart a
- 00:06:31machine on someone else's desk his
- 00:06:33curiosity drives him so that's been my
- 00:06:35thing I want to learn something new I
- 00:06:37want to see how things work I want to
- 00:06:39take stuff apart and I was just never
- 00:06:41afraid to fail at it that's great I I I
- 00:06:44listened to you in a in a podcast where
- 00:06:47you H said tools or things you Ed to
- 00:06:50keep that Curiosity alive which was
- 00:06:51perhaps doing a sentence can you share a
- 00:06:54little bit of how to keep curiosity uh
- 00:06:57sure and that comes from emul I so many
- 00:07:00years ago I got this question what is it
- 00:07:03that the world's most successful people
- 00:07:05are doing that everybody else isn't why
- 00:07:08are some people really successful right
- 00:07:10and I started wondering is there there
- 00:07:13must be doing something that everybody
- 00:07:15else isn't doing right that's what I
- 00:07:17started to wonder so I made it kind of a
- 00:07:18lifelong study every time I'm around
- 00:07:20somebody that I admire that's been
- 00:07:22successful and whatever they do by the
- 00:07:24way I started to ask the same set of
- 00:07:27questions to understand and it turns out
- 00:07:30that there are habits and disciplines
- 00:07:33practices that successful people do
- 00:07:35everywhere and that's when I started to
- 00:07:37notice that for example uh you know I I
- 00:07:40I mentioned somebody like Steve gnak or
- 00:07:42Mark Randolph who I'll be with tomorrow
- 00:07:44that uh invented Netflix but then
- 00:07:47friends of mine like Pitbull the singer
- 00:07:48is a friend of mine they're similar in
- 00:07:51ways you'd never guess right Pitbull is
- 00:07:53a singer Mark's an engineer but they
- 00:07:55have similar attitudes habits and
- 00:07:57practices so one of those is that these
- 00:08:01people are trying to absorb information
- 00:08:05from a world broader than their own
- 00:08:07right and and so to answer your question
- 00:08:10that the Habit is I created I I just
- 00:08:12made up this word I call it infos
- 00:08:14sponging but I challenge myself like for
- 00:08:17example the first time Pitbull called me
- 00:08:18I was like okay you're really you're Mr
- 00:08:20worldwide why are you calling me and he
- 00:08:22said because I want to learn business
- 00:08:23now right and he said all my friends are
- 00:08:25in music you're in business teach me
- 00:08:27business and I thought that's pretty
- 00:08:29smart that he's wants to continue to
- 00:08:31grow his lifelong learning the most
- 00:08:34successful people don't just study in
- 00:08:36their field they look to see what
- 00:08:37everyone else is doing so really quick
- 00:08:39info sponging the idea that I created
- 00:08:42was every day I'm going to challenge
- 00:08:45myself to learn one new thing every day
- 00:08:47but here's the important thing that I
- 00:08:48don't need to know so for 10 minutes
- 00:08:51every day this is what I'll challenge
- 00:08:52your your your you know your listeners
- 00:08:54for 10 minutes every day um and I
- 00:08:57usually do this first thing in the
- 00:08:58morning 15 minutes if you can't do it
- 00:09:00every day do it once a week um I go out
- 00:09:03to learn one thing that is not in my
- 00:09:05industry so if you were in travel so for
- 00:09:08these 10 minutes you're not in travel
- 00:09:10and you don't work for your company go
- 00:09:12read one article watch one video talk to
- 00:09:14one person and at the end I write down
- 00:09:16one sentence of what I learned today but
- 00:09:18when I write it down I'm like I have no
- 00:09:20idea what that even means right today
- 00:09:22but I I want you to think of knowledge
- 00:09:24like puzzle pieces if I gave you a piece
- 00:09:26of a puzzle and I said hey what is this
- 00:09:28you'd say you gave me one piece Jeff if
- 00:09:30I gave you two or three you wouldn't
- 00:09:31know but if every day I kept giving you
- 00:09:34pieces out of the box of the puzzle and
- 00:09:36you moved them around the table one day
- 00:09:37you would call me right and you would
- 00:09:39say oh this is a cathedral that's what
- 00:09:41it's going to be you would see the
- 00:09:42pattern forming that's what the most
- 00:09:45successful people do with knowledge they
- 00:09:47collect bits of knowledge and they push
- 00:09:48it around the table and they oh I see a
- 00:09:50trend coming that no one else sees so
- 00:09:53info sponging learn one new thing a day
- 00:09:55that you don't need to know write down
- 00:09:57one sentence of what you learned and
- 00:09:58then some days just stare at that list
- 00:10:01and you will start to see patterns
- 00:10:02before anyone else sees them yeah when
- 00:10:04when you see patterns is that you more
- 00:10:06or less like they saying connect the
- 00:10:08dots and and then abut those pieces of
- 00:10:10information you you okay they're
- 00:10:12relevant in a near future you connect
- 00:10:13the dots and you apply them in a way
- 00:10:15that before anyone else saw it and that
- 00:10:17was the common element when I saw these
- 00:10:19successful people I was like how'd you
- 00:10:21get there and I realized something
- 00:10:22because they were studying the world and
- 00:10:23putting connecting the dots before
- 00:10:25anyone else connected them wow so you
- 00:10:28know and you yourself of our our iconic
- 00:10:30in in entrepreneurial ecosystem history
- 00:10:33what would be the best advice you've
- 00:10:37ever got and the worst advice you've
- 00:10:39ever got sure so I'll I'll I'll go with
- 00:10:41the best uh
- 00:10:43well the worst I don't know if it was
- 00:10:46advice so much as my own I'll do the
- 00:10:48worst first so we'll close on the
- 00:10:49positive note um the the worst was
- 00:10:53people telling me that's a great idea go
- 00:10:56for it okay and I'll tell you why that
- 00:10:58was the worst advice
- 00:10:59because they were giving me their
- 00:11:01opinion and validating mine and and I
- 00:11:04this board where I write down the
- 00:11:06lessons I've learned and I'll tell you
- 00:11:08the lesson from that of it being wrong
- 00:11:10one day I wrote down we get our advice
- 00:11:13from proximity not relevance and the
- 00:11:15reason I said that is I was listening I
- 00:11:18was getting advice from people whose
- 00:11:20only qualification is there near me it
- 00:11:22could be uh husband wife mother father
- 00:11:24brother sister your best friend so the
- 00:11:26people around me were telling me that's
- 00:11:28a good ide AA or that's a bad idea and I
- 00:11:31was getting advice from them because
- 00:11:33they were the people around me and then
- 00:11:35one day I realized wait a minute uh
- 00:11:37somebody actually it was my mom my
- 00:11:39mother was commenting on some internet
- 00:11:42idea I was telling her about and my mom
- 00:11:43was saying why she didn't think it was a
- 00:11:45good idea and all of a sudden I thought
- 00:11:47to myself so that actually was bad
- 00:11:49advice she was saying don't do it it's a
- 00:11:51bad idea but what I realized was I said
- 00:11:54mom you're telling me that because of
- 00:11:55all the internet companies you built my
- 00:11:57mom's like I never built an internet
- 00:11:58company I'm like like exactly and then I
- 00:12:00realized Jeff it's your fault why are
- 00:12:01you listening to the wrong people so
- 00:12:04advice from people who are not relevant
- 00:12:06to your Market if you're building a
- 00:12:08travel product don't listen to your best
- 00:12:10friend unless she is a person that
- 00:12:12travels all the time and knows a lot
- 00:12:14about travel that was the bad advice the
- 00:12:17best advice uh was when when I had a
- 00:12:20mentor that told me it's never about you
- 00:12:23it might be your idea and you might be
- 00:12:25the founder but the only path to success
- 00:12:28is through building a team of people
- 00:12:30smarter than you around you so I I
- 00:12:33originally thought it's my idea I'm the
- 00:12:35founder I'm the Creator no one can do it
- 00:12:37better than me whatever all that crap
- 00:12:39and and the truth is one day somebody
- 00:12:41said you will never get anywhere until
- 00:12:43you surround yourself with people
- 00:12:44smarter than you so that's the best
- 00:12:46advice I ever got was stop trying to
- 00:12:48build a company and spend more time
- 00:12:50building a team they'll build the
- 00:12:51company totally but wonderful you you
- 00:12:54mentioned advises and then you referred
- 00:12:56to the word even in the second question
- 00:12:58Mentor so what importance do you give I
- 00:13:01know you yourself is are a mentor of
- 00:13:03great entrepreneurs what importance and
- 00:13:06how do you see mentorship in in sure
- 00:13:08that's a great question and and you know
- 00:13:10I wish someone had told me that and can
- 00:13:11you still be mentored when you're in
- 00:13:13your level at say okay so absolutely you
- 00:13:16never stop learning in fact if you think
- 00:13:18you're done learning you're you're
- 00:13:20already irrelevant you're over you you
- 00:13:22never ever stop learning and you can
- 00:13:24always be mentored because there's still
- 00:13:26something you don't know how to do
- 00:13:27you've never done and somebody's done it
- 00:13:28successfully
- 00:13:29that you can learn from so I think a
- 00:13:31mentor is critically important um the
- 00:13:34mistake that I made early on first of
- 00:13:36all I didn't have any mentors early then
- 00:13:38later I thought a mentor was somebody
- 00:13:41that's just the qu the only
- 00:13:43qualification I thought was they've done
- 00:13:45this so I was building travel technology
- 00:13:47for travel and Hospitality right that's
- 00:13:48what we did at Price Line booking Etc um
- 00:13:51that's what those companies do um I was
- 00:13:53building technology for travel so for a
- 00:13:55mentor I thought I just needed someone
- 00:13:57maybe they work for an airline Hotel
- 00:13:59company the lesson that I learned about
- 00:14:02picking a mentor is the best Mentor is
- 00:14:05someone you want to be like when you
- 00:14:06grow up so that's a a holistic view the
- 00:14:10person when you look at somebody not say
- 00:14:12he used to be the CEO of an airline
- 00:14:15that's not the qualification for a
- 00:14:16mentor when you look at somebody and say
- 00:14:18man someday I want to be just like him
- 00:14:20that's who you pick because it it
- 00:14:23entrepreneurship as we all know is a
- 00:14:25difficult Journey it's a lonely Journey
- 00:14:28right there's a lot a risk involved you
- 00:14:30alienate people that you know are around
- 00:14:33you if you're going to do all that stuff
- 00:14:36it better be taking somewhere taking you
- 00:14:38somewhere you want to be so when you
- 00:14:40pick a a mentor that you say I want to
- 00:14:42wind up where she is someday that's how
- 00:14:44you select your Mentor find someone you
- 00:14:46want to be like someday I don't care how
- 00:14:47old you are somebody you want to be like
- 00:14:49when you grow up and talk to reach out
- 00:14:51to that person to be your Mentor they
- 00:14:53may have no knowledge of the industry
- 00:14:55you're in but they have knowledge of how
- 00:14:57do you make you an effective leader a
- 00:14:58better Communicator a good person lead a
- 00:15:01good life all that stuff's way more
- 00:15:02important than did they work for an

- 00:15:06know there's a story I I really like the
- 00:15:09pretty girl high school story I don't
- 00:15:10know if you so how can young
- 00:15:13entrepreneurs get in contact sure so you
- 00:15:17know I'm glad you said that well I I'll
- 00:15:19explain I'll explain what that story is
- 00:15:22um and that is part of the quote that I
- 00:15:24said get your advice from uh don't get
- 00:15:27your advice from proximity get it from
- 00:15:29relevance but I thought of that one day
- 00:15:31because I was sitting in a football
- 00:15:32stadium American football but in any
- 00:15:35given I started to wonder this
- 00:15:36afterwards so I'm sitting in this
- 00:15:38football stadium in one little town and
- 00:15:40on the team in American football the
- 00:15:42head person's the quarterback right and
- 00:15:45the quarterback is playing well and
- 00:15:47everybody's around me is saying he's
- 00:15:48going to go pro he's going to be a
- 00:15:50professional football player and then
- 00:15:52they have dancers and cheerleaders and
- 00:15:54one girl's by definition there's always
- 00:15:56a prettiest girl at that event and
- 00:15:58everyone saying she's going to be a
- 00:15:59famous movie star and I was sitting
- 00:16:01there and I was thinking and and I then
- 00:16:03I went and looked it up right now on a
- 00:16:05Friday night in the United States there
- 00:16:06are 177,000 high schools so that means
- 00:16:10divided by two right there's like
- 00:16:1489,000 games going on on any Friday
- 00:16:16night so in 9,000 stadiums someone's the
- 00:16:19prettiest girl and someone's the best
- 00:16:20athlete and all the people are saying
- 00:16:23he's going to be Pro and she's going to
- 00:16:24be a movie star and yet none of those
- 00:16:27people have any qualific to say that I
- 00:16:30like do you run do you own a
- 00:16:32professional football team are you a
- 00:16:33scout no so how do you know they're
- 00:16:35going to make it in the same way that
- 00:16:37girl none of these people are a talent
- 00:16:38agent right in the in Hollywood that's
- 00:16:41when I started to think about a mentor
- 00:16:42right and I need somebody that's been
- 00:16:45that's had the the career path that I
- 00:16:47want to have that's been around that if
- 00:16:49I want advice on playing football I want
- 00:16:51advice from somebody who played football
- 00:16:53professionally so anyway the mentor I
- 00:16:56mean you personally or are are a a
- 00:16:58LinkedIn genius you know how to use it
- 00:17:00you know how to work it you've created
- 00:17:02so much value and following you use
- 00:17:04LinkedIn really well I know that people
- 00:17:06learn from you and people that are
- 00:17:08listening if you don't know that you
- 00:17:09should they should learn from you the
- 00:17:10way you do LinkedIn but that's by far
- 00:17:13the best tool out there people are on
- 00:17:15LinkedIn because they want to do
- 00:17:16business and they want to be contacted
- 00:17:19so going through Linkedin reading about
- 00:17:21people and finding someone that you say
- 00:17:23man I want to be like that person one
- 00:17:25day that's how you find your Mentor go
- 00:17:27out and reach out old reach and and tell
- 00:17:30people I really admire you and I would
- 00:17:31love to talk to you someday most people
- 00:17:34won't respond somebody will why are the
- 00:17:37key qualities you would Envision into
- 00:17:40that figure of great leader or Mentor
- 00:17:42for you personally what are the
- 00:17:43qualities that every successful or Mar
- 00:17:47has um so uh there's a few the first one
- 00:17:50the biggest one is humility when people
- 00:17:52think they know everything and they're
- 00:17:54smarter than everyone you can't learn
- 00:17:55from them and they can't they stop
- 00:17:56learning so the first one is humility
- 00:17:59right I like working with people that
- 00:18:00say you know they might have been
- 00:18:02immensely successful right but they're
- 00:18:05still saying can you teach me something
- 00:18:07can I grow more can I learn more so
- 00:18:09humility pay attention to that if
- 00:18:11somebody we were listening to a speaker
- 00:18:13earlier today uh I will not mention the
- 00:18:16name um that that came across like he
- 00:18:19already knows everything and he's
- 00:18:20already smarter than everyone and you
- 00:18:22know what happens to me I just tuned
- 00:18:23that out I'm already not interested in
- 00:18:24listening uh I somebody with the
- 00:18:27humility to know that you never stop
- 00:18:28growing and you never sto learning and I
- 00:18:30don't know everything that's a big
- 00:18:33characteristics so you want your mentor
- 00:18:34to be open-minded too not the one
- 00:18:37because some people think I need to find
- 00:18:38a mentor that already knows everything
- 00:18:39nobody does right the second one I would
- 00:18:42say is empathy um is people with
- 00:18:45listening skills and by the way I didn't
- 00:18:47know that till I failed one of the
- 00:18:49companies I launched um we were trying
- 00:18:51to sell products that stay-at-home moms
- 00:18:53to Housewives at the time none neither
- 00:18:56me nor none none of my employees
- 00:18:59were were stay-at-home moms none of them
- 00:19:01were Housewives and we launched a
- 00:19:03product and no Mom at all liked the
- 00:19:06product and
- 00:19:07later we we launched an early internet
- 00:19:10company uh that was that was I I won't
- 00:19:12say the name of it I don't want
- 00:19:13embarrass the other people but um we
- 00:19:15thought that instead of going to the
- 00:19:17mall a mom instead of packing up all the
- 00:19:19kids could use her computer to order
- 00:19:21something on this brand new thing called
- 00:19:23the internet and here's what happened in
- 00:19:25real life no one bought anything the
- 00:19:26company failed and I had to tell the
- 00:19:28investor s and the employees you're all
- 00:19:30I have to let you all go home we're done
- 00:19:31with this shopping company but I reached
- 00:19:33out to some of the people because you
- 00:19:35could see them on the website so this is
- 00:19:36a true story H this m mom replied and I
- 00:19:39said I saw you looking at my products
- 00:19:42but you didn't buy anything and I said
- 00:19:44why not I said the company failed um and
- 00:19:47this is where the empathy the listening
- 00:19:49skills came in and she said to me she
- 00:19:52said well your products are good I
- 00:19:53wanted to buy this sweater but I'm not
- 00:19:55going to type my credit card into your
- 00:19:58computer so you this is what she said so
- 00:20:00you and your nerd friends can buy more
- 00:20:02computers I said okay ma'am that's fine
- 00:20:04but we can't see your credit card she
- 00:20:05said of course you can I'm typing it on
- 00:20:07your website and I said no we use
- 00:20:10something called RSA 128bit encryption
- 00:20:13and this woman said uh sorry man I only
- 00:20:15speak English and I said I'm speaking
- 00:20:17English and she said I don't know what
- 00:20:19that is and I said you don't know what
- 00:20:20encryption is because all my friends and
- 00:20:23everybody I know know what it means to
- 00:20:24encrypt something and she said I said
- 00:20:27you don't know what encryption is this
- 00:20:28woman said to me unless that's the way
- 00:20:31Egyptians bury their dead then I don't
- 00:20:33know what encryption is and I said no
- 00:20:36that's not it and so I walk I I went
- 00:20:39back she goes and I don't have any idea
- 00:20:40what you're talking about and I realize
- 00:20:42I'm a bad listener I'm telling people
- 00:20:44what to do but I'm not listening so
- 00:20:46empathy how well do you listen to the
- 00:20:48world around you what I started doing on
- 00:20:50that when I was a CEO I would tell
- 00:20:52people I'm going on a listening tour I'm
- 00:20:54going to go talk to 50 or 100 moms and
- 00:20:57if they don't even know what encryption
- 00:20:59is I got a problem and I need to figure
- 00:21:00out how to solve it that's that's crazy
- 00:21:03and in parenthesis I think you this is
- 00:21:06real life case scenario I came here
- 00:21:08sweating all nervous and you started
- 00:21:10asking me questions about myself when
- 00:21:12I'm like trying to GA your information
- 00:21:14so so it's just that like that constant
- 00:21:16curiosity humility like it's you truly
- 00:21:20have it in you in you I really
- 00:21:22appreciate those are the things I've
- 00:21:23learned along the
- 00:21:24way that's great um well be before I
- 00:21:29wanted also to talk a little bit more
- 00:21:30about H well matter of fact I want to
- 00:21:33talk about the import you mentioned lots
- 00:21:34of key figures like Nolan from Atari
- 00:21:39Steve bosnak Mar Randol like friends of
- 00:21:41yours who also changed the world like
- 00:21:43yourself what important do you give ER
- 00:21:47to networking um and what importance do
- 00:21:51you give
- 00:21:52to like for example Silicon Valley has
- 00:21:55something special that's going on where
- 00:21:56lots of Founders that you even mentioned
- 00:21:58come from that bay area so do you find
- 00:22:01it important also that location where
- 00:22:03you you're you're okay those a great
- 00:22:05questions um no location doesn't matter
- 00:22:08anymore and it turns out it never did
- 00:22:10but the reason it worked for Silicon
- 00:22:12Valley because they had an ecosystem
- 00:22:16that no one else had it turns out you
- 00:22:17can build that EOS I'll explain you can
- 00:22:19build that ecosystem anywhere it wasn't
- 00:22:21they didn't own it but no one else was
- 00:22:23doing it so that ecosystem has a couple
- 00:22:25of elements in it um that that are
- 00:22:29answer your question and and so the the
- 00:22:31short answer is networking is critically
- 00:22:33important but here's why every problem
- 00:22:36you're trying to solve in business
- 00:22:37someone probably has already done that
- 00:22:39someone knows something you don't
- 00:22:41somebody could help you so if you're
- 00:22:42sitting in your office alone or with
- 00:22:44three people trying to solve problems
- 00:22:46and meanwhile someone's already done
- 00:22:47that one right but why would they help
- 00:22:50you right you say to yourself well why
- 00:22:51would they tell me how to do that and it
- 00:22:53helped me the answer is because you
- 00:22:54probably have done something they're
- 00:22:56struggling with so what Silicon Valley
- 00:22:58did it wasn't the location they created
- 00:23:01something that people didn't realize
- 00:23:03they socialized business here's
- 00:23:06something interesting if you go into a
- 00:23:07restaurant in Silicon Valley back in the
- 00:23:10day especially um you and I would come
- 00:23:12in you and I are about to have a meeting
- 00:23:14as just a two of us and I'd say table
- 00:23:15for two they'd put us at a table with
- 00:23:17eight other people a table for 10 and
- 00:23:19the first time I said it's just two of
- 00:23:21us and they're like you're right you're
- 00:23:22sitting here and I'm like there's all
- 00:23:23these other people at the table and in
- 00:23:25Silicon Valley like that's right because
- 00:23:26we all want to hear each other's ideas
- 00:23:28is so they socialize business in Silicon
- 00:23:31Valley even the restaurants you all sit
- 00:23:34together everybody talks and you say
- 00:23:36wait a minute you have that problem I
- 00:23:37can fix that and then you say to me okay
- 00:23:40what can I do for you and I say well I
- 00:23:41don't know how to do this and you say ah
- 00:23:43I know him he can do that and then he
- 00:23:45says well if she'll help me with this
- 00:23:47that's what worked they understood the
- 00:23:49attitude was that a rising tide lifts
- 00:23:52all boats everybody else didn't get that
- 00:23:55so the network effect of meeting all
- 00:23:57these people and sharing and helping
- 00:23:59each other in Silicon Valley it was
- 00:24:02everybody's goal for everybody to win
- 00:24:04and that's what made it work because
- 00:24:06people interact so much there I I
- 00:24:08literally did something one of the times
- 00:24:10I was there I was everybody wanted to
- 00:24:12meet with me and I didn't have any time
- 00:24:13left and so I met as many as I could but
- 00:24:16the last meal all I had left was a
- 00:24:18dinner and there were five different
- 00:24:19entrepreneurs or startups that wanted to
- 00:24:21meet so I sent a note to all five of
- 00:24:23them the same note I said I only have
- 00:24:25one time slot left it's dinner you can
- 00:24:27all have it and all five of them without
- 00:24:30hesitation came to the same dinner and
- 00:24:32they're all at the I did get a table for
- 00:24:3310 makes sense and they're all like
- 00:24:35sharing with each other and saying I can
- 00:24:37help you with that the network is
- 00:24:39critically important for being able to
- 00:24:41help you at times where you're stuck on
- 00:24:44something and you need to learn
- 00:24:45something totally now talking on on that
- 00:24:48concept of ambition so you've had on
- 00:24:51your name your founded H companies that
- 00:24:54literally have changed the world and are
- 00:24:56Global no when you started those
- 00:24:59Ventures what was that that motivated
- 00:25:02you is it still the same thing that
- 00:25:03keeps on motivating you to keep doing
- 00:25:05things which we'll touch later and how
- 00:25:08was your ambition like was it I'm I want
- 00:25:10to change the world or or how how do you
- 00:25:12so yeah yeah you're right um impact
- 00:25:14matters right um part of the way I
- 00:25:16attracted talent in early days why was
- 00:25:19by saying wouldn't you like to look in
- 00:25:22an industry one day and it's completely
- 00:25:24different because of your work the
- 00:25:26things that you did we created the uh so
- 00:25:28one of the things I was building way
- 00:25:30before there was a priceline.com or
- 00:25:32Expedia or booking or any of those
- 00:25:34things was these check-in chios that are
- 00:25:36in the airports when you go and you
- 00:25:38check in um I was telling the team then
- 00:25:41wouldn't you like to walk into an
- 00:25:42airport and no one's in line anymore
- 00:25:44they're just walking up to kiosk and
- 00:25:45checking in and you can nod and say
- 00:25:47you're welcome right because you build I
- 00:25:49still get people from us building the
- 00:25:51early ones that will'll take a picture
- 00:25:53of themselves at a kiosk with a boarding
- 00:25:55pass and they'll just text me thanks
- 00:25:57because we help Pioneer that so when we
- 00:26:00were doing that we've always talked
- 00:26:01about impact you really want to look
- 00:26:04back at your life and say I help make
- 00:26:06something better somewhere impact is a
- 00:26:08big deal and and the the rock stars in
- 00:26:11an industry they they don't want just a
- 00:26:13paycheck they want to look back and know
- 00:26:15they've made an impact so that does
- 00:26:16matter um it's a it's a a win for
- 00:26:19everybody an impact still matters to me
- 00:26:21to be able to look back and say did we
- 00:26:22do anything that mattered do we make did
- 00:26:24we make something better for somebody
- 00:26:27else how do you see uh present
- 00:26:31Generations young generations of
- 00:26:32entrepreneurs in glow in general and
- 00:26:34with that that you just referred us
- 00:26:36seeking more impact or is it what
- 00:26:38motivates us how do you ambition what
- 00:26:40I'm really excited about with this
- 00:26:42generation um is the focused on two
- 00:26:45things impact and experiences that
- 00:26:48previous My Generation it was title and
- 00:26:51salary oh wait you're a vice president
- 00:26:53that makes you great right and what's
- 00:26:55your salary your generation there's uh
- 00:26:58Focus much more on am I having an impact
- 00:27:01am I making any difference in the world
- 00:27:02but you also care about experiences
- 00:27:04right this this this generation wants to
- 00:27:08grow they want to learn they don't just
- 00:27:09want a job right they actually want an
- 00:27:12experience in addition and I think that
- 00:27:13is phenomenal we did this crazy
- 00:27:15experiment so I'm part of a couple of
- 00:27:17nonprofits and and we can touch on that
- 00:27:19later if we have time but one of them is
- 00:27:20called the unreasonable group and we
- 00:27:22were trying to kind of prove a point
- 00:27:24that the entrepreneurial Spirit are
- 00:27:26people that want to have an impact and
- 00:27:27want to make things better so we
- 00:27:28actually chartered a ship that sailed
- 00:27:32around the world full of
- 00:27:33entrepreneurs um showing entrepreneurs
- 00:27:36the way the the world's real problems
- 00:27:38and challenging them to fix it and it it
- 00:27:40it was a success meaning we proved the
- 00:27:42point that people like you that said
- 00:27:44well I didn't know that was a problem
- 00:27:45saw the problem and said I'm going to
- 00:27:47design a solution and I'm going to make
- 00:27:48it better impact matters totally I want
- 00:27:51to go back a little on on for those
- 00:27:55young entrepreneurs that are starting um
- 00:27:57uh their Ventures uh what would be some
- 00:28:01not at advice but what what would be the
- 00:28:02rookie mistakes that most entrepreneurs
- 00:28:06sure how can they avoid them I I
- 00:28:08obviously work with thousands of
- 00:28:10startups all over the world now so I see
- 00:28:12them all and I hear them all and I live
- 00:28:13them all we made every mistake you can
- 00:28:15make three times myself along the way um
- 00:28:19uh the first rookie mistake is being
- 00:28:21blinded by your own Brilliance you think
- 00:28:23it's a great idea who cares because
- 00:28:26you're expecting the stay-at-home mom to
- 00:28:27buy it
- 00:28:28and she has no idea what you're talking
- 00:28:29about so that's the first one I hear
- 00:28:31these people like I got this great idea
- 00:28:34and I'm thinking who thinks it's great
- 00:28:35you do your mom does right your brother
- 00:28:37does who thinks it's great and then when
- 00:28:39I say who are you going to sell it to
- 00:28:41and they'll say I'll make up an example
- 00:28:43schools and I'm like okay can you go get
- 00:28:45me some school administrators to tell me
- 00:28:47it's great they're like well they
- 00:28:48haven't seen it yet and I said but you
- 00:28:49haven't even talked to them being
- 00:28:51blinded by your own Brilliance is the
- 00:28:53first mistake you're excited about your
- 00:28:55idea people around you remember what I
- 00:28:57said proximity not relevance are telling
- 00:28:59you it's a good idea and not one of them
- 00:29:01is the person you expect to buy this so
- 00:29:04stop listening to your opinion and go
- 00:29:06talk to that Mom or that school
- 00:29:08administrator that that you want um the
- 00:29:12uh probably a second rookie mistake we
- 00:29:15touched on a little bit is believing
- 00:29:17that you can wear Seven Hats because at
- 00:29:20the beginning you have to you're paying
- 00:29:22the bills you're doing the marketing
- 00:29:23you're building the product you're
- 00:29:25answering the phone so all of a sudden
- 00:29:27you're good at customer service finance
- 00:29:29marketing operations no you're not
- 00:29:31you're actually only good at one thing
- 00:29:32so figuring out the one thing you have a
- 00:29:35strength in and then getting out of the
- 00:29:37way and letting other people do the
- 00:29:39other things that's the mistake I people
- 00:29:41say I they say look man I'm doing I wear
- 00:29:44six hats and it's going well and I was
- 00:29:46like okay that's bad news right the fact
- 00:29:48that it's going well is actually a
- 00:29:49problem because you think you're good at
- 00:29:51stuff that you're actually not those are
- 00:29:53those are rookie mistakes people make
- 00:29:55and and in the end that whole product
- 00:29:56Market fit thing right going and talking
- 00:29:58to those moms before you build them a
- 00:30:00product ures product but I don't see
- 00:30:03that people build a product then they
- 00:30:05mistake IM made they take it out and say
- 00:30:07how come no moms like this and the mom's
- 00:30:09like if you had told me you were
- 00:30:10building that I would have told you not
- 00:30:11to waste your time I was like I wish I
- 00:30:12talked to you first what would be the
- 00:30:15the key ingredients now to build a
- 00:30:18global brand and also like to get those
- 00:30:21perhaps 1,000 clients is does it change
- 00:30:24or are they different it does change
- 00:30:26yeah okay um early on uh I'll answer
- 00:30:30those separately early on to get those
- 00:30:32early clients um you've got to do
- 00:30:34something special for them right you
- 00:30:36don't treat your initial clients uh we
- 00:30:39always call them reference clients and
- 00:30:40the reason why is they're the ones
- 00:30:42everyone's going to go to for a
- 00:30:43reference it's a social media world so
- 00:30:45in the beginning you don't need lots of
- 00:30:47clients that's another mistake companies
- 00:30:49make they're like we need 10,000 clients
- 00:30:52I said no you need 1,000 clients 10,000
- 00:30:55clients that give you a five out of 10
- 00:30:58net promoter score right is not helpful
- 00:31:011,000 clients that give you a 9.8
- 00:31:04launches a business that's a mistake
- 00:31:06they focus on quality quantity of
- 00:31:10clients early on early on you don't need
- 00:31:12quantity you need quality you need 9.8
- 00:31:15out of 10 because it's a social media
- 00:31:16world and everybody's going to go out
- 00:31:18there and and and kind of look so that's
- 00:31:21part of the brand is you need virality
- 00:31:24right we live in this social media world
- 00:31:25where people don't say uh you know uh
- 00:31:29they don't look at your ad and say I
- 00:31:31have to buy this product they call their
- 00:31:33friends and say what product do you use
- 00:31:35and they look at social media and they
- 00:31:36say man all my friends love this I'm
- 00:31:38going to do that so in that validating
- 00:31:40World your brand has to be this viral
- 00:31:43thing that happens because the ear
- 00:31:47people that first encounter you can't
- 00:31:49stop talking about you and absolutely
- 00:31:50love you and the other part of brand is
- 00:31:53that Brands need to be simple and
- 00:31:55resonant right don't tell a comp ated
- 00:31:58story tell a really simple story all the
- 00:32:01Best Brands were just really simple
- 00:32:04message of why do I care about you what
- 00:32:05do you do for me what is the simple
- 00:32:07message I learned that by the way from
- 00:32:09uh the F Fred Smith the founder of FedEx
- 00:32:12okay uh because I had a chance to spend
- 00:32:13some time with him and his brand was
- 00:32:16this at the beginning it said when it
- 00:32:18absolutely positively has to be there
- 00:32:20overnight that's all he said he didn't
- 00:32:22talk about the cost or or the
- 00:32:24convenience of finding a FedEx all he
- 00:32:26said was if you absolutely need this
- 00:32:29package delivered overnight call me
- 00:32:31super simple his brand resonated because
- 00:32:34it wasn't complicated simple wins wow
- 00:32:37that's crazy talking about hats I wanted
- 00:32:40to ask how how do you balance your role
- 00:32:43as CEO film producer author entrepreneur
- 00:32:46motivational speaker H how do you
- 00:32:48balance this this hat all right so I'm
- 00:32:50glad you asked that because that's
- 00:32:52another hard-learned lesson and the
- 00:32:54answer is and part of this I learned
- 00:32:56from Richard Branson at virgin um
- 00:32:58uh and because I asked Richard that once
- 00:33:01you have all these companies and he
- 00:33:02turned to me and he said not at once and
- 00:33:05so all those things that I've done were
- 00:33:07Ser I'm not a parallel entrepreneur I'm
- 00:33:09a Serial entrepreneur okay each of those
- 00:33:12things when I when I was doing the music
- 00:33:14stuff uh there was a point when we were
- 00:33:16building the first travel company where
- 00:33:18if you had called me and said hey I want
- 00:33:20to show you this idea you know what I
- 00:33:21would have said if you don't have an
- 00:33:23idea to help us get more heads on
- 00:33:25pillows in hotel rooms call me next year
- 00:33:27then later I was doing music and if you
- 00:33:29had called me I would have said if you
- 00:33:31don't have an idea for selling out
- 00:33:33Friday night's concert call me next year
- 00:33:35or whatever it was you're working on so
- 00:33:37the answer is one thing at a time the
- 00:33:39good news about that Jorge is that when
- 00:33:41you fail you fail fast because you're
- 00:33:42not trying to do five things you're all
- 00:33:44in on this one thing so it's important
- 00:33:47each of those things I did were were
- 00:33:50serial not parallel I finish one thing
- 00:33:53before I started I never tried to run
- 00:33:54two or three companies at once and you
- 00:33:56recommend that to Young entrepreneurs
- 00:33:58who have because it's very typical in my
- 00:34:00generation speaking that we have lots
- 00:34:03going on very parallel what would be
- 00:34:05your advice to those so like me okay so
- 00:34:08there's a question first which is what's
- 00:34:10your end goal and and you know in the
- 00:34:12entrepreneurial world there's there's
- 00:34:13sort of these two terms behind the
- 00:34:15scenes more on the investor side we
- 00:34:16label these things a lifestyle business
- 00:34:19or growth business a lifestyle business
- 00:34:22if if you want to make half a million
- 00:34:24euros a year and live a great life then
- 00:34:26you can have four businesses and four
- 00:34:28projects that's a lifestyle but if you
- 00:34:30want to build the next Amazon booking
- 00:34:33Netflix way if your goal is to build
- 00:34:37something big and Global every one of
- 00:34:39those people only did one thing none of
- 00:34:41them had multiple projects that so by
- 00:34:43the way I studied that right because way
- 00:34:45back in the early internet days I used
- 00:34:46to talk to Bezos a lot because there was
- 00:34:48like three groups building a companies
- 00:34:50Jeff and Pierre were building eBay we
- 00:34:52were launching Price Line and the other
- 00:34:54Jeff was building um Amazon at the time
- 00:34:57so we used to talk a lot and I learned a
- 00:34:59lesson he kept saying right now if
- 00:35:02people forget this for years on Amazon
- 00:35:04you could only buy a book and he what
- 00:35:07Jeff told me back then is one day I'm
- 00:35:09going to sell a lot of stuff but right
- 00:35:11now I want to be the this is what he
- 00:35:12literally said best DN book seller on
- 00:35:14the planet and then I ran into another
- 00:35:16friend Tony Shay his company was zap
- 00:35:18host did you know what zap and Tony said
- 00:35:21one day I'm going to do other things but
- 00:35:23right now I have to be the best darn
- 00:35:24shoe seller on the planet so our Focus
- 00:35:27was let's just be the best darn
- 00:35:29something today as an example
- 00:35:30booking.com is the world's largest it's
- 00:35:33price on and booking are all one company
- 00:35:35the world's largest seller of hotel
- 00:35:36rooms but it really only has one product
- 00:35:39really all the company sells his hotel
- 00:35:40rooms and it's the world's largest Bezos
- 00:35:42now sells everything on Amazon but not
- 00:35:45until he was the best at something so
- 00:35:48when I then I started looking at all
- 00:35:50these companies right the net the ones I
- 00:35:52said just pick those the Apple Story the
- 00:35:53Netflix story pick a story the people
- 00:35:56that achieved the highest levels did did
- 00:35:57not have multiple projects they picked
- 00:35:59one and they were all in on the one
- 00:36:01thing they knew they could do best and
- 00:36:03Jeff how would you define your
- 00:36:05philosophy in life or north star
- 00:36:08purpose what's yours I I I think that if
- 00:36:12you don't have a North star if you don't
- 00:36:14have a purpose um uh a a a bigger reason
- 00:36:18for doing this so I'm going to tell a
- 00:36:20story um uh specifically about my
- 00:36:23daughter who is in the studio with us
- 00:36:25today um because there was a time where
- 00:36:29I was just gone a lot working really
- 00:36:31hard um and when you do that there's
- 00:36:34sacrifice to family members right and
- 00:36:36and you know you have a daughter saying
- 00:36:37man you're gone a lot right um and so
- 00:36:41one of the times uh I was the chairman
- 00:36:44of a a charity that provided physical
- 00:36:47activities sports for disabled children
- 00:36:50but for the most disabled children you
- 00:36:51can't play wheelchair basketball if
- 00:36:53you're blind or you have no arms right
- 00:36:55so we created a league of sports
- 00:36:58for children that that that could not
- 00:37:01participate in anything else um but it's
- 00:37:03a nonprofit it's a charity um and I was
- 00:37:06doing this with a friend of mine who was
- 00:37:07an athlete and one of the times I'm
- 00:37:10working really hard at work which means
- 00:37:11there's a sacrifice to yourself
- 00:37:13personally into your family but I took
- 00:37:15her we were doing a softball game and I
- 00:37:18I took my daughter out there and we're
- 00:37:21pushing these kids around like when they
- 00:37:23quote hit the ball in softball then
- 00:37:25someone has to push them down to the
- 00:37:27base and were pushing these kids around
- 00:37:28in the sun having an absolutely great
- 00:37:30time and parents were thanking me and
- 00:37:34they weren't just thanking me for the
- 00:37:35league but some of them were saying
- 00:37:37thanks and they were going by in these
- 00:37:38brand new Wheelchairs and my daughter
- 00:37:40said why does everybody thank you and I
- 00:37:43was saying well because we created this
- 00:37:44league and I'm the chairman of it and we
- 00:37:46created this opportunity and she's like
- 00:37:48what are they mentioning the Wheelchairs
- 00:37:50and I said because my partner in this it
- 00:37:53was a a boxer named Evander Holyfield
- 00:37:56Evander and I were doing this together I
- 00:37:57said because ivander and I bought all
- 00:38:00these Wheelchairs and my daughter who
- 00:38:03was helping push people that day stopped
- 00:38:06and said wait a minute you guys paid for
- 00:38:08all this and you bought all these
- 00:38:09Wheelchairs and you created all this I
- 00:38:11said yes and she said is that why you
- 00:38:14work this hard and I said absolutely
- 00:38:16because if I don't work hard and run a
- 00:38:17good business and make money these kids
- 00:38:19don't have wheelchairs and she just
- 00:38:21looked at me different then and said you
- 00:38:24know her attitude was more let me know
- 00:38:25how I can help right she came to the
- 00:38:27office a lot of times instead of why are
- 00:38:29you doing this she was like now that
- 00:38:31makes sense if you don't have a North
- 00:38:33star a reason then you're just working
- 00:38:35hard and wasting your life and paying
- 00:38:37sacrifice we were doing it because we
- 00:38:39wanted to leave an impact and do bigger
- 00:38:41things and it was just cool the day my
- 00:38:43daughter said this is why you're working
- 00:38:45this hard yeah that's my North Star is
- 00:38:47at the end I don't want people to
- 00:38:49remember the businesses I want people to
- 00:38:50remember the the lives we made better
- 00:38:53that's why we do gen right we just want
- 00:38:55to make other people's lives better but
- 00:38:56you have to work hard to do that totally
- 00:38:58well my next question was specifically
- 00:39:00that what inspired you to start World JS
- 00:39:02Horizon on Reon group all these
- 00:39:04philanthropies I don't know if you want
- 00:39:05to add something more to sure yeah just
- 00:39:08to kind of summarize that it was it was
- 00:39:11that entrepreneurship isn't a job it's a
- 00:39:14mindset and a tool set right a skill set
- 00:39:16and it was because I chose to be an
- 00:39:19entrepreneur and not follow I started in
- 00:39:21a corporate engineering job it's because
- 00:39:23I chose to be an entrepreneur that gave
- 00:39:26me the opportunity
- 00:39:28to create value that we got paid for
- 00:39:30that enabled us to create these
- 00:39:32nonprofits if we didn't create value in
- 00:39:34the world right and we didn't get paid
- 00:39:36for it we don't have the money to buy
- 00:39:38the wheelchairs or anything else so uh
- 00:39:40uh the businesses were the I was tell
- 00:39:43people success is not a destination even
- 00:39:46though everyone thinks it is success is
- 00:39:48a platform if you work hard and you have
- 00:39:50a successful business then you have a
- 00:39:52business that can actually go out and
- 00:39:53buy wheelchairs a business that can go
- 00:39:55out in the price line day
- 00:39:58um we did a lot of Charity Price Line
- 00:40:00sponsored a lot of Charities we were
- 00:40:01making internet money and we were using
- 00:40:03it to make other people's lives better
- 00:40:05and I realized that the harder I work
- 00:40:07the more of a difference I can make and
- 00:40:08that that's what the inspiration was
- 00:40:10crazy how your DNA extrapolated to the
- 00:40:13business's DNA it's it's it's amazing uh
- 00:40:16yes to to to we're ending now I have a
- 00:40:19couple questions and then some quick
- 00:40:20questions also okay sure so in Broad
- 00:40:22terms what would be that one advice you
- 00:40:24would give young Spanish entrepreneurs
- 00:40:27who are listening to you um the the
- 00:40:29biggest advice I'd give you is when you
- 00:40:31have a good idea get out of your office
- 00:40:34go out into the world and show it to the
- 00:40:36people that you think are going to buy
- 00:40:38that product or service spend more time
- 00:40:40out of your office talking to people uh
- 00:40:43and and too many people spend too much
- 00:40:45time working in their office and on
- 00:40:46their whiteboard and not enough time
- 00:40:48validating their ideas for product
- 00:40:50Market fit in the world totally what
- 00:40:52would be that one advice you would give
- 00:40:54to a child if you could give only one
- 00:40:56advice to child oh no I absolutely and
- 00:40:59that one is to never stop being curious
- 00:41:02wonder about everything go pick up a
- 00:41:04shiny object instead of walking by it
- 00:41:06and wondering I I know what that is just
- 00:41:07turn around and go pick it up and see so
- 00:41:10never stop wondering and never stop
- 00:41:11being curious that's great yes for
- 00:41:14context also what's next for Jeff
- 00:41:15Hoffman what are you you doing what are
- 00:41:18your Ventures I know you're here in in
- 00:41:20Madrid South Summit as a headliner um
- 00:41:24but apart from that if you could tell
- 00:41:25our um really the the Focus now is on
- 00:41:28teaching people how to help themselves
- 00:41:30um so uh the not business part of my
- 00:41:34life is again serving as chairman of the
- 00:41:36global entrepreneurship Network we're on
- 00:41:37the ground in 200 countries now and
- 00:41:39we're teaching people how to get a
- 00:41:41better life by turning their idea into a
- 00:41:43money-making business so it's not about
- 00:41:45money or business it's about you don't
- 00:41:47like the life you have go create the one
- 00:41:49you want the question is how do I do
- 00:41:51that and the answer is through the skill
- 00:41:53set of Entrepreneurship so we teach
- 00:41:55people how to turn an idea into a
- 00:41:56business that's the global
- 00:41:57entrepreneurship Network um the one I
- 00:41:59mentioned before that I was the founding
- 00:42:01board member of I'm still a partner in
- 00:42:03is called the unreasonable group it's
- 00:42:05named after a George Bernard Shaw quote
- 00:42:08about the fact that all progress is
- 00:42:10dependent upon unreasonable people right
- 00:42:12that are crazy enough to think they can
- 00:42:13change the world um that one is similar
- 00:42:16but unreasonable focus is only on social
- 00:42:18good we're aligned with the United
- 00:42:20Nations 17 stgs the goals um and then
- 00:42:24the last one world youth Horizons is the
- 00:42:26the Youth Foundation I set up and that
- 00:42:29one's focused on you know I was born a
- 00:42:32white male in the United States so I'm
- 00:42:34already way ahead of people through no
- 00:42:37you know no design of my own I just was
- 00:42:40born there but I was in a village in
- 00:42:42Africa one day talking to this brilliant
- 00:42:44young man and thinking why is he born in
- 00:42:46a village in Africa and I'm born in the
- 00:42:48United States as a white male it's not
- 00:42:50really fair he's a smart as I am he's
- 00:42:52probably smarter but I was born here and
- 00:42:54he was born somewhere else so the focus
- 00:42:56of world youth is we're trying to create
- 00:42:58Pathways for children who don't have a
- 00:43:01shot at a better life to have a path to
- 00:43:03a better life that's what we do at World
- 00:43:04youth so those are the things that are
- 00:43:06most important to me now truly amazing
- 00:43:09and inspiring thank you je for for
- 00:43:11adding value and also I'll put in and
- 00:43:13plug in your social media your websites
- 00:43:15and so people can find your projects and
- 00:43:17yourself so quick questions that I have
- 00:43:20if you could have a dinner with anyone
- 00:43:23in the world Dead or Alive which is
- 00:43:25quite curious because probably Walt
- 00:43:27Disney Walt Disney because I wanted I
- 00:43:29wanted to comprehend the way that he
- 00:43:31took imagination and creativity and
- 00:43:33turned it into business as fascinating
- 00:43:35to me that's awesome a book or or movie
- 00:43:38or song you would recommend yeah uh for
- 00:43:41me it was The Alchemist nice because the
- 00:43:43Alchemist actually made me think about
- 00:43:45what do you actually want in life why
- 00:43:46are you doing what what are you chasing
- 00:43:48but I I hadn't really thought deeply
- 00:43:50until I read The Alchemist what's the
- 00:43:52best investment you've made in your life
- 00:43:55and the best investment you've made for
- 00:43:56on under $50 or Euros oh that's a hard
- 00:44:00one um because it wasn't quite under 50
- 00:44:04but it's F I'm just going to tell you
- 00:44:06the first thing that came to mind
- 00:44:07because it wasn't a business investment
- 00:44:08it was headphones because music actually
- 00:44:12helps me get inspired so when I finally
- 00:44:15bought some decent headphones and put
- 00:44:17them on the music like if I'm not
- 00:44:19energized I put on the right music and
- 00:44:21I'm ready to go to the office and do
- 00:44:23something if something makes me sad
- 00:44:25right the music lifts me back up if I
- 00:44:27need to calm down cuz I'm worried about
- 00:44:29something the music calms me down so
- 00:44:31when you said that I'm just answering
- 00:44:32the first thing that came to my mind
- 00:44:33headphones and then uh uh the uh best
- 00:44:37investment I've ever made in my life is
- 00:44:41a pretty easy one it's time with my
- 00:44:43children that's great uh that that's
- 00:44:45that you get to keep that forever they
- 00:44:47can take everything else away from you
- 00:44:49but they can't take away moments and
- 00:44:50memories totally and yes to end one
- 00:44:54quote speech word that imagine every
- 00:44:57everyone 8 billion people are listening
- 00:44:59to you what would be that one thing that
- 00:45:02you would I'll just pick one I have a
- 00:45:03lot of quotes that I that I uh really
- 00:45:06really like in fact my favorite quote
- 00:45:08machine is Mark Twain okay right he had
- 00:45:11so many great quotes um but I'm gonna
- 00:45:14I'm GNA do something that that fits kind
- 00:45:17of for this moment um your attitude this
- 00:45:20isn't the quote your this is what I
- 00:45:21wrote on my wall that your attitude
- 00:45:24determines your outcome and I started to
- 00:45:25notice that people that believe that
- 00:45:28have the biggest attitude achieve the
- 00:45:30most right and the people are like that
- 00:45:32probably won't work they're always
- 00:45:33negative and looking for a way out so I
- 00:45:35was doing television commercial a public
- 00:45:38service announcement on Univision okay
- 00:45:41and and on uh a telmundo and stuff um
- 00:45:44yeah but it was me and pitpull and we
- 00:45:46were sitting side by side and I said
- 00:45:49somebody said as asking about attitude
- 00:45:52and I said you have to believe that the
- 00:45:54sky is the limit and pitpull sitting
- 00:45:57right next to me and he turned and
- 00:45:58looked at me and he goes yeah Jeff I
- 00:46:00used to believe the sky was the limit
- 00:46:01too but then I saw footsteps on the moon
- 00:46:05and I was like thanks man for making me
- 00:46:07here right and that was it he said I
- 00:46:09used to think the sky was the limit
- 00:46:10until I saw footprints on the moon and I
- 00:46:13was like that's the attitude I love that
- 00:46:15quote because there's always another
- 00:46:17step you could go if you just keep
- 00:46:19looking and believe crazy let's end this
