The Burden of Misapplying God’s Word | Mark 2:23 - 3:6 | Pastor Daniel Batarseh (Gospel of Mark)
Summary

- 00:01:26one sabbath
- 00:01:28he was going through the grain fields
- 00:01:31and as they made their way his disciples
- 00:01:33began to pluck heads of grain
- 00:01:37and the pharisees were saying to him
- 00:01:39look
- 00:01:40why are they doing what is not lawful on
- 00:01:43the sabbath
- 00:01:45and he said to them
- 00:01:47have you never read what david did
- 00:01:49when he was in need and was hungry he
- 00:01:52and those who were with him
- 00:01:53how he entered the house of god in the
- 00:01:55time of abiathar the high priest
- 00:01:58and ate the bread of the presence which
- 00:02:00is not lawful for any but the priest to
- 00:02:02eat and also gave it to those who were
- 00:02:04with him
- 00:02:06and he said to them
- 00:02:07the sabbath
- 00:02:09was made for man
- 00:02:11not man
- 00:02:13for the sabbath
- 00:02:15so the son of man is lord even of
- 00:02:18the sabbath
- 00:02:21a careful reading of the gospels will
- 00:02:23show
- 00:02:24that one of the major controversies that
- 00:02:26centered around the person of jesus
- 00:02:28christ
- 00:02:29was his behavior
- 00:02:31on a particular day of the week
- 00:02:35that day of the week may not have much
- 00:02:36relevance to us gentiles but it is a day
- 00:02:39of the week
- 00:02:41that was and still is a trademark for
- 00:02:43the jewish people
- 00:02:45that day as you heard many times just in
- 00:02:48our reading is known as the sabbath
- 00:02:51which in the hebrew simply means to rest
- 00:02:53or to cease
- 00:02:55it was on the sabbath which defines
- 00:02:58friday sunset to saturday sunset
- 00:03:01according to jewish law that some of the
- 00:03:03most memorable miracles of jesus took
- 00:03:06place
- 00:03:08but it was also on that same day that
- 00:03:09the ever-present pharisees
- 00:03:12manifested the depths of the cruelty and
- 00:03:15coldness of their heart
- 00:03:17especially as it contrasted to the warm
- 00:03:20compassion of jesus christ toward people
- 00:03:24it's so strange to think how a day that
- 00:03:26was divinely ordained by god
- 00:03:31to cause reverential meditation and
- 00:03:33refreshment from work
- 00:03:35made these pharisees
- 00:03:37so intensely vexed
- 00:03:40and frustrated
- 00:03:43and it is in this teaching that you will
- 00:03:44see why
- 00:03:46why why was it that these pharisees were
- 00:03:48so caught up
- 00:03:50in responding to something that was holy
- 00:03:53and for the good of man
- 00:03:56but instead became a burden
- 00:03:59and something to be dreaded
- 00:04:02and it's going to be a lesson for you
- 00:04:04and i to understand that we can take
- 00:04:05god's word and misapply it
- 00:04:07we can take god's word and
- 00:04:09reinvent the purpose of it and bring
- 00:04:12harm to ourselves and to others
- 00:04:14but more than that it is the activity of
- 00:04:16jesus on the sabbath that will bring
- 00:04:18even greater support to his nature and
- 00:04:20character
- 00:04:21it was on the sabbath that the pharisees
- 00:04:24wanted to flex their empty religion
- 00:04:27their performance of piety but it was
- 00:04:29also on the sabbath
- 00:04:30and many occasions that jesus proved
- 00:04:32that he was who he said he was
- 00:04:34god in the flesh
- 00:04:36and as you as you behold that this
- 00:04:37aftertune may it pull on your heart to
- 00:04:39worship and adore him to a greater
- 00:04:41degree
- 00:04:42but on this particular sabbath that we
- 00:04:44just read the the critical pharisees
- 00:04:46vocalized their unjustified
- 00:04:49concerns not because jesus performed a
- 00:04:51miracle in fact jesus wasn't the direct
- 00:04:54object of their scorn it was his
- 00:04:56disciples and what they did
- 00:04:59and these disciples
- 00:05:00just ate some grain
- 00:05:03but that was significant to
- 00:05:05the pharisees these pseudo spiritual
- 00:05:07spies were flustered by the sight of
- 00:05:10these men snacking on some grain as they
- 00:05:13walked along a path
- 00:05:15and here's what you and i are going to
- 00:05:16do this afternoon the same way that
- 00:05:17these disciples walk by a specific path
- 00:05:20in order to nourish themselves by
- 00:05:22receiving some kind of
- 00:05:24strength from these little nuggets
- 00:05:27you and i also as we glean through this
- 00:05:28passage are going to
- 00:05:31pluck some truths from these verses and
- 00:05:33receive nourishment
- 00:05:35for our souls
- 00:05:37what do we see here in verse 23 jesus
- 00:05:39was making his way to a certain
- 00:05:41destination and we are told that his
- 00:05:43disciples accompanied him and as they
- 00:05:45accompanied him they were just pulling
- 00:05:47some grain
- 00:05:49as they passed by some fields
- 00:05:52and matthew is more specific with this
- 00:05:54exact scene by telling us that they were
- 00:05:56hungry so they plucked the grain so that
- 00:05:58they could eat and i cannot help but
- 00:06:00even at this point draw a simple
- 00:06:02principle that will hopefully help you
- 00:06:04and i
- 00:06:05as we commit ourselves to following
- 00:06:06jesus these apostles and training as
- 00:06:09they trail behind their rabbi
- 00:06:12show us that living for the lord jesus
- 00:06:16serving his purposes and his cause
- 00:06:19does not guarantee luxury or
- 00:06:22uninterrupted physical convenience
- 00:06:27these disciples not too long ago were
- 00:06:29feasting
- 00:06:30at matthew's house
- 00:06:32enjoying a banquet
- 00:06:35in just a few short hours later a few
- 00:06:38days perhaps
- 00:06:40here they are
- 00:06:41taking some kernels rubbing it in their
- 00:06:43hands and trying to make the most out of
- 00:06:45it
- 00:06:47when we follow the lord
- 00:06:49we have to understand
- 00:06:51that it is not always convenient to our
- 00:06:53flesh
- 00:06:54it does not guarantee that everything
- 00:06:56will be brought before us on a silver
- 00:06:58platter and that we will have no
- 00:06:59discomfort or no test or no
- 00:07:02concern
- 00:07:04at least immediately
- 00:07:06what i see here with these disciples is
- 00:07:08a perfect example of quiet contentment
- 00:07:10in jesus christ
- 00:07:12no complaints no squeaks no squeals
- 00:07:15here they are walking along with jesus
- 00:07:17and just enjoying what has been provided
- 00:07:19for them in the natural
- 00:07:22and there are some days where we will
- 00:07:24know feasts and there are some days
- 00:07:25where we will know some fast and fast
- 00:07:27that we do not intend to explore
- 00:07:29willingly
- 00:07:31but look at these disciples i love the
- 00:07:33fact that there is silence on their part
- 00:07:34there are no complaints from them
- 00:07:36because their rations look much more
- 00:07:38different than it was just a few days
- 00:07:40ago
- 00:07:41the celebration that they enjoyed in
- 00:07:43matthew's home
- 00:07:45and here's how i take it as long as
- 00:07:47christ is with us it doesn't matter what
- 00:07:48is before us
- 00:07:50as long as christ is our portion it
- 00:07:53doesn't matter what kind of portion we
- 00:07:54have in the natural any portion is a
- 00:07:57full portion when christ is our true
- 00:07:59portion
- 00:08:01and so there's such a plainness about
- 00:08:03this scene
- 00:08:04here they are just
- 00:08:06gazing and grazing while they walk in
- 00:08:08the shadow of their savior and the
- 00:08:10simplicity is so beautiful because what
- 00:08:13we look here and see is that the lord
- 00:08:16and following him does not mean that we
- 00:08:18will experience a series
- 00:08:21of supernatural events continually
- 00:08:25encouraged that the same way the lord
- 00:08:27was in the presence of his disciples in
- 00:08:29the grain fields so is he with you and i
- 00:08:33when we are going through seasons of
- 00:08:35what may be ordinary or mundane
- 00:08:39you see jesus knew that his servants
- 00:08:40were hungry he can see it despite the
- 00:08:43fact that he was omniscient he could see
- 00:08:45it and jesus doesn't take it upon
- 00:08:47himself to perform some kind of a
- 00:08:48miracle instead he allows his followers
- 00:08:53to pluck some grain to silence their
- 00:08:55grumbling bellies and he was just as
- 00:08:58present with them then as he would be
- 00:09:00when he would feed the five thousand
- 00:09:04and so christ is with us
- 00:09:06if i can use this word
- 00:09:08in our snacking
- 00:09:11just as much as in our serving
- 00:09:14that his watchful eye is strong
- 00:09:17even what seems to be normal
- 00:09:20routine
- 00:09:21mundane
- 00:09:23just as much as it would be when we see
- 00:09:24him do miracles in our lives
- 00:09:27and may we not reserve our praise to him
- 00:09:30only when we are promoted in an unusual
- 00:09:32way or only when we seem to have this
- 00:09:35supernatural opportunity open for us in
- 00:09:38our favor
- 00:09:40because his grace spreads out
- 00:09:43and extends far beyond the undeniable
- 00:09:46interventions that he provides for us
- 00:09:49see what these disciples are doing is
- 00:09:51what any ordinary jew would do it was a
- 00:09:53common practice but even though this
- 00:09:56this is something that we would dismiss
- 00:09:57as just going to the gas station to pick
- 00:10:00up a little thing because you're hungry
- 00:10:01and your commute was a little longer
- 00:10:03than you thought it was
- 00:10:04these disciples
- 00:10:06are experiencing and are recipients of
- 00:10:09the goodness of god
- 00:10:11even in the plucking of the grain
- 00:10:13not just filling the baskets after a
- 00:10:15miraculous provision of just
- 00:10:17a few pieces of bread and fish into
- 00:10:19feeding the multitudes even in that
- 00:10:22and the reason is because
- 00:10:24what these men are doing was only
- 00:10:26possible because god made it possible he
- 00:10:29actually made it law he actually
- 00:10:31codified it through moses
- 00:10:33so you're going to have to hear this
- 00:10:35verse and understand that understanding
- 00:10:37this verse helps us see and understand
- 00:10:39the rest of the text in deuteronomy 23
- 00:10:4425
- 00:10:45god gave instructions to the israelites
- 00:10:47and he said an interesting thing in this
- 00:10:49verse
- 00:10:50if you go into your neighbor's standing
- 00:10:53grain you may pluck
- 00:10:55the ears with your hand but you shall
- 00:10:57not put a sickle to your neighbor's
- 00:10:59standing grain
- 00:11:01so he actually created a law that these
- 00:11:04men were fulfilling that they were
- 00:11:05walking in faithfully
- 00:11:07and this was just one facet of
- 00:11:10the welfare system in israel not not a
- 00:11:12system that makes you lazy
- 00:11:15but one that gives means to strengthen
- 00:11:16the hungry traveler
- 00:11:18while at the same time not significantly
- 00:11:20stripping somebody's hard earned profit
- 00:11:24away from them
- 00:11:26and though no law exists like this for
- 00:11:28you and i in the new covenant does not
- 00:11:30this verse
- 00:11:32show us and give us a glimpse
- 00:11:34of the mindfulness of god for you and me
- 00:11:37he actually cares about going from point
- 00:11:40a to point b and making sure that your
- 00:11:42belly is full
- 00:11:44and so he creates this law that is fair
- 00:11:46and just
- 00:11:48and it shows his love for the israelites
- 00:11:50just as much as when he reigned manna
- 00:11:52from heaven for 40 years a recurring
- 00:11:56miracle day by day his love is just as
- 00:11:59strong
- 00:12:00in this law as it was in the miracle
- 00:12:03and what am i trying to propose to you
- 00:12:05and i may we love him in the natural not
- 00:12:07just in the
- 00:12:08supernatural may we praise him and
- 00:12:10credit him for his goodness in what
- 00:12:13seems to be something that his
- 00:12:14fingerprints are not on when in fact he
- 00:12:17is the supplier of all our good
- 00:12:20he is the permitter of all the things
- 00:12:22that we enjoy
- 00:12:24and so i'm refreshed by
- 00:12:27this visual
- 00:12:28of jesus walking i don't know how it
- 00:12:30look was it one line where they spread
- 00:12:32across
- 00:12:33the field
- 00:12:34there's jesus walking and his disciples
- 00:12:36plucking and maybe one disciple is
- 00:12:38trying to jokingly take the grain out of
- 00:12:39the other hand
- 00:12:41of another disciple
- 00:12:43but something happens because what's so
- 00:12:45beautiful
- 00:12:46in this scene what what showcases the
- 00:12:48goodness of god and even encourages us
- 00:12:50to know silent satisfaction as we follow
- 00:12:54jesus no matter what's in our hand
- 00:12:56was something that was totally different
- 00:12:58in the sight of these pharisees
- 00:13:02a sharp accusation arose in those fields
- 00:13:04i don't know where they were i don't
- 00:13:05know if they were in the field spying
- 00:13:07it's a pretty pathetic sight
- 00:13:09but this group of religious elite
- 00:13:11thought that they found something that
- 00:13:12would disqualify the credibility of
- 00:13:14jesus's closest students
- 00:13:17and so they say
- 00:13:18look
- 00:13:20why are they doing what is not lawful on
- 00:13:22the sabbath well you and i just heard it
- 00:13:24in deuteronomy what they are doing is
- 00:13:27lawful
- 00:13:28it was permitted it was granted there
- 00:13:29was a green light
- 00:13:31but their issue was not so much of the
- 00:13:33plucking and the eating per se as much
- 00:13:35as it was that they were doing this on
- 00:13:38the sabbath
- 00:13:41were they right
- 00:13:43were the disciples breaking the law
- 00:13:46were they working on a day that was
- 00:13:48calling for rest
- 00:13:51the short answer
- 00:13:52no
- 00:13:54no
- 00:13:56you and i should be acquainted with the
- 00:13:57pharisees enough to understand that they
- 00:14:00were masters
- 00:14:02and notorious for taking man-made
- 00:14:05tradition and elevating it to the degree
- 00:14:08that it would eclipse the simplicity and
- 00:14:10the clarity of god's word
- 00:14:12and if this is saying anything it is
- 00:14:15showing how their tradition
- 00:14:17mangled
- 00:14:19it absolutely tampered with something as
- 00:14:21holy as the sabbath until it became
- 00:14:24unrecognizable
- 00:14:26until it lost all its life-giving value
- 00:14:29until it was marred into something that
- 00:14:31was hideous instead of something that
- 00:14:32was holy
- 00:14:34legalism tends to do that
- 00:14:37you see if there was something that
- 00:14:39these pharisees were doing on the
- 00:14:40sabbath is that they utilized it
- 00:14:42as a weekly platform to
- 00:14:45pump their pride
- 00:14:48and so week after week these men would
- 00:14:50not only impose their regulations and
- 00:14:53their rituals that were out of bounds of
- 00:14:55the bible but they would they would use
- 00:14:57this time to also police the population
- 00:15:01and to
- 00:15:03criticize and to point out and to
- 00:15:04disqualify men standing with god
- 00:15:07based on the fact that they are not
- 00:15:09adhering to their own rules and so you
- 00:15:12can imagine how this day was generally
- 00:15:14dreaded by the israelite we don't want
- 00:15:16the sabbath to come because out come the
- 00:15:19cockroaches
- 00:15:20here come the pharisees sniffing and
- 00:15:22looking and we see a snippet of it even
- 00:15:25here i mean here's jesus traveling with
- 00:15:27his disciples and upcoming these
- 00:15:28pharisees popping their head out of the
- 00:15:30grains and saying ha ha look look what
- 00:15:32they're doing write it down
- 00:15:36and instead of it being a day of rest
- 00:15:37for god's people under the old covenant
- 00:15:40it was a day of unrealistic expectations
- 00:15:43in the name of
- 00:15:44righteousness quotation marks
- 00:15:47oh this is a sad thing
- 00:15:50all these rules
- 00:15:52all these ideas conjured up by
- 00:15:55men who think they are pious do we have
- 00:15:57a glimpse do we have any idea of what
- 00:15:59kind of these
- 00:16:00rules look like yes we do the mishnah
- 00:16:04which is really just a historical book
- 00:16:06of a collection of the jewish oral
- 00:16:07traditions shows us actually just some
- 00:16:10of the rules that were implemented on
- 00:16:12this day the mission is not a divine
- 00:16:14book
- 00:16:15it's a historical book and they have a
- 00:16:17section on the sabbath
- 00:16:19and it is through that that we can see
- 00:16:22what it was that the pharisees were
- 00:16:23trying to implement so strongly
- 00:16:26so on that list there are 39 works that
- 00:16:28were prohibited forbidden that would
- 00:16:31violate their idea of the sabbath and
- 00:16:34there are some things there that were
- 00:16:36obvious types of labor like hunting or
- 00:16:39plowing
- 00:16:41but then as you read on you realize that
- 00:16:42the category of work included
- 00:16:45hard to believe practices
- 00:16:48for example a legal work would
- 00:16:50constitute writing more than one letter
- 00:16:52on a on a page
- 00:16:55or god forbid you erase two letters
- 00:16:58it would mean
- 00:17:00tying a knot
- 00:17:02untying a knot
- 00:17:03sewing more than one stitch
- 00:17:06cleaning clothes
- 00:17:08walking a certain amount of steps
- 00:17:13and other paralyzing practices
- 00:17:16so with that in view it's no wonder that
- 00:17:18the pharisees were shaken by the sight
- 00:17:20of the fact that these disciples were
- 00:17:22plucking grain
- 00:17:24because it's highly possible that in
- 00:17:25this one scene alone what they estimated
- 00:17:27was that these disciples were breaking
- 00:17:30the law because they were traveling too
- 00:17:32far
- 00:17:35and they were working
- 00:17:36yes this is work according to the
- 00:17:39pharisees
- 00:17:41the plucking the removing of the shell
- 00:17:42the blowing of the chaff equated
- 00:17:45harvesting
- 00:17:47and threshing
- 00:17:48and winnowing
- 00:17:51and so they said
- 00:17:53you're working
- 00:17:55you're working sounds ridiculous is it
- 00:17:57not may i propose to you
- 00:17:59that in this day today the same spirit
- 00:18:02is at work in many ministries
- 00:18:06that might be foreign to you
- 00:18:09but just just look out into the horizon
- 00:18:12stay in this thing long enough
- 00:18:14open your networks and converse with
- 00:18:16others who are part of different
- 00:18:17denominations or different network of
- 00:18:19churches and what you'll realize is
- 00:18:21there are some churches
- 00:18:23who have required specific measurements
- 00:18:25of clothing
- 00:18:28not modesty i mean here comes the ruler
- 00:18:31and let's see how long the sleeve is
- 00:18:34let's see how far down the dress goes
- 00:18:37the same people will condemn the
- 00:18:38application of cosmetics
- 00:18:40on a woman's face or on a woman's body
- 00:18:44who demand
- 00:18:45limited technology
- 00:18:48in
- 00:18:48each family's home
- 00:18:52and who exalt these rules
- 00:18:55which have
- 00:18:56zero benefits to true sanctification
- 00:19:02and the sad part is people eat this
- 00:19:03stuff up it's attractive to some
- 00:19:06to some the temptation is lawlessness i
- 00:19:08believe that's the greater issue with
- 00:19:10american christianity but to others it
- 00:19:12is legalism
- 00:19:14and what you have is people who who live
- 00:19:16their life in this way and who adopt
- 00:19:17these strict observances to these rigid
- 00:19:20rituals because they think this is what
- 00:19:22pleases god
- 00:19:24this is what puts a smile on his face
- 00:19:29would you like to know how the holy
- 00:19:30spirit saw these pharisees would you
- 00:19:32like to know what he perceived would you
- 00:19:33like to know what concerns him the same
- 00:19:35pharisees who seem so disciplined who
- 00:19:38seemed so devoted to the cause of god
- 00:19:41on one of the teachings of jesus where
- 00:19:44the pharisees were in attendance
- 00:19:46he taught about money and the holy
- 00:19:48spirit gives us a commentary on
- 00:19:50something hidden apart from this we
- 00:19:52would not have known we would have
- 00:19:53probably assumed but the holy spirit
- 00:19:54exposes these same men
- 00:19:57who ran around bullying people with
- 00:19:59their standards turn with me to luke
- 00:20:01chapter 16
- 00:20:03and look at this short verse with me
- 00:20:12in luke 16 14-15
- 00:20:18we are told
- 00:20:22the pharisees
- 00:20:26who were lovers of money
- 00:20:30heard all these things and they
- 00:20:31ridiculed him
- 00:20:32and he said to them
- 00:20:34you are those who justify yourselves
- 00:20:36before men but god knows your hearts
- 00:20:40for what is exalted among men is an
- 00:20:42abomination in the sight of god
- 00:20:45beneath the rituals
- 00:20:47under the holy garments and quotation
- 00:20:49marks the public prayers the constant
- 00:20:52fasting the nagging criticism
- 00:20:55and the fault finding in the name of
- 00:20:57holiness
- 00:20:58was a burning
- 00:21:00infatuation
- 00:21:02for money
- 00:21:04the god that most people worship today
- 00:21:08these pharisees might have been able to
- 00:21:09fool others and they might have thought
- 00:21:11and believed that they were fooling god
- 00:21:13but this verse proves listen to me this
- 00:21:15afternoon my people my brethren my
- 00:21:18sisters my fellow followers of christ
- 00:21:24what this verse proves is that the lord
- 00:21:26looks past our daily and weekly
- 00:21:28performances and the only thing he
- 00:21:30considers is what lives in the deepest
- 00:21:33chambers of your heart and mind
- 00:21:38what a scathing statement jesus makes
- 00:21:43for what is exalted among men is an
- 00:21:45abomination in the sight of god can you
- 00:21:47imagine he's speaking about their empty
- 00:21:49religion this might not shock you until
- 00:21:51you do a comprehensive study in the word
- 00:21:53of god to see what is under the category
- 00:21:55of abomination
- 00:21:57like pervert sexual practices
- 00:21:59and yet there is a high spot for empty
- 00:22:02religion under that condemning category
- 00:22:05and imagine imagine doing all these
- 00:22:07things for for the sake of people seeing
- 00:22:09how spiritual you are and god sees it as
- 00:22:13a heap of stench and smell
- 00:22:19i cannot help but move past this text
- 00:22:21without considering the thought
- 00:22:25not just
- 00:22:26not just for those who might be
- 00:22:28pharisaical
- 00:22:30who have magnified tradition and
- 00:22:32magnified outward behavior
- 00:22:34and not what god puts weightier
- 00:22:37emphasis on
- 00:22:39but even for us in our performances in
- 00:22:41in our service to god what does it
- 00:22:43matter
- 00:22:45what benefit is it if there's no spirit
- 00:22:47inspired pulse behind it
- 00:22:51god forbid that we would go through the
- 00:22:53mechanics of christianity with
- 00:22:56hollowness
- 00:22:58with emptiness
- 00:23:00with no connection to this pleasing my
- 00:23:02lord from a position of being saved by
- 00:23:05his grace yes
- 00:23:08and i can't help but look at this verse
- 00:23:09and this is what came to mind when
- 00:23:11reading it oh lord you saw their hearts
- 00:23:14you saw their loves
- 00:23:17you didn't see the length of their
- 00:23:18beards and their garments you didn't see
- 00:23:21the lengths of the prayers you didn't
- 00:23:22see the length of their fasting you saw
- 00:23:25what they loved and this is what you
- 00:23:28look for oh if god were to come into
- 00:23:31your heart
- 00:23:33and pull it out in the open
- 00:23:36what kind of love would he find there
- 00:23:40what would he see in that heart
- 00:23:43what would he discover
- 00:23:46pass through all the practices
- 00:23:49and all the performance if god were to
- 00:23:51come just to see the pulse of your heart
- 00:23:55what would he see
- 00:23:59is there a love for him
- 00:24:03or are we just empty performers
- 00:24:05convincing ourselves and others that
- 00:24:06we're okay
- 00:24:08everything is fine
- 00:24:10what do our affections
- 00:24:12beat for
- 00:24:14what directions are our hearts set
- 00:24:16toward who is it that we are the most
- 00:24:19captivated by
- 00:24:21and who is it that we are the most
- 00:24:22fearful of disappointing and grieving oh
- 00:24:25would he see the reflection of his own
- 00:24:27face when he pulls out that heart
- 00:24:30and looks at it to see what kind of
- 00:24:32loves we have in this life
- 00:24:34and may he by his grace keep that love
- 00:24:37alive for him
- 00:24:39until this heart is transformed in the
- 00:24:42resurrection
- 00:24:43only by his grace able to perfectly love
- 00:24:45him for all of eternity
- 00:24:48and so we come back to our attacks in
- 00:24:50mark 2
- 00:24:52to see jesus's answer to the allegation
- 00:24:55made by the pharisees and he would do so
- 00:24:57by masterfully referencing a scripture
- 00:25:00you want to deal with legalistic people
- 00:25:02go to the bible you want to deal with
- 00:25:04people who love tradition go to the
- 00:25:06bible and we read it but we can read it
- 00:25:08again
- 00:25:10in verse 25 and he said to them have you
- 00:25:12never read what david did when he was in
- 00:25:14need and was hungry he and those who
- 00:25:15were with him how he entered the house
- 00:25:17of god in the time of abiathar the high
- 00:25:20priest and ate the bread of the presence
- 00:25:22which is not lawful for any but the
- 00:25:24priest to eat and also gave it to those
- 00:25:26who are with him
- 00:25:27it's a very simple story if you were
- 00:25:29with us on fridays we covered this in
- 00:25:30first samuel we're in second samuel now
- 00:25:33it's the story of david who had to flee
- 00:25:36his home his work his family
- 00:25:39because of a sudden exile because saul
- 00:25:41turned on him and was ready to kill him
- 00:25:43and because he had no time to prepare he
- 00:25:45comes to the house of god empty-handed
- 00:25:47and he seeks something to eat because he
- 00:25:49is hungry him and his men who
- 00:25:51accompanied him
- 00:25:52and so he asked the priest if there's
- 00:25:54anything for him and the priest said
- 00:25:55there's nothing here but the holy bread
- 00:25:58the holy bread was something designated
- 00:26:00for the priest alone to eat
- 00:26:02it was to be there on the table of show
- 00:26:04bread and once they would recycle the
- 00:26:06bread with fresh hot bread every week
- 00:26:08they would eat the old bread that's what
- 00:26:10david was looking for
- 00:26:12and it was granted to him
- 00:26:15now that simple story may seem
- 00:26:18straightforward but the question is
- 00:26:20why is jesus alluding to it out of all
- 00:26:22the things why this story and let me
- 00:26:25give you what perhaps you grew up
- 00:26:27understanding it to me if you grew up in
- 00:26:29the church let me give you the most
- 00:26:32popular interpretation
- 00:26:33it seems that people think that jesus is
- 00:26:36by pointing to david providing an
- 00:26:39illustration to promote
- 00:26:42a principle of mercy
- 00:26:44meaning what
- 00:26:46after the pharisees condemn the
- 00:26:47disciples the lord points to david to
- 00:26:50teach that under certain circumstances
- 00:26:53god is willing
- 00:26:55for ceremonial laws
- 00:26:57for rules to be set aside for the sake
- 00:27:00of meeting a human need it's a lesson on
- 00:27:04compassion
- 00:27:05the idea here is that
- 00:27:07observing regulations is not more
- 00:27:09important than providing assistance in
- 00:27:11emergency situations like david was in
- 00:27:16and even if our help means that we need
- 00:27:18to
- 00:27:19bend the commands of god a little bit
- 00:27:22then let's bring it about
- 00:27:25so you can imagine how a text like this
- 00:27:27is often referred to to support the
- 00:27:29notion of
- 00:27:31situational ethics
- 00:27:34all that means is that under unique
- 00:27:36situations it would be acceptable to
- 00:27:38commit
- 00:27:39if we're honest what would be known as a
- 00:27:41sin in order to promote a greater good
- 00:27:46so that's what jesus is teaching look
- 00:27:49david did what was wrong he wasn't
- 00:27:50punished for it because there was a need
- 00:27:53so why are you pharisees getting all
- 00:27:54flustered when the disciples here are
- 00:27:56just doing the same thing they're eating
- 00:27:59okay if it
- 00:28:00confuses what it means to be not working
- 00:28:02on the sabbath what's the big deal
- 00:28:06personally i do not believe that's what
- 00:28:07jesus is teaching
- 00:28:11and i may have stepped on some toes but
- 00:28:13would you bear with me
- 00:28:15because i've heard this from many people
- 00:28:16myself and
- 00:28:18as i looked further into it i realized
- 00:28:20that perhaps that is not jesus's
- 00:28:22main point maybe that's not even his
- 00:28:24point at all
- 00:28:26because
- 00:28:27this would make sense
- 00:28:30this message
- 00:28:32would fit
- 00:28:33if the disciples actually broke the law
- 00:28:37but they didn't
- 00:28:40they were guiltless
- 00:28:42but look how jesus speaks about david in
- 00:28:44verse 26 how he entered the house of god
- 00:28:47in the time of abyatha the high priest
- 00:28:49and ate the bread of the presence which
- 00:28:52is not lawful for any but the priests to
- 00:28:56eat
- 00:28:58so what david did was a clear violation
- 00:29:01of god's law
- 00:29:03he did break it it's undeniable
- 00:29:05that alone should cause us to at least
- 00:29:08question the popular understanding and
- 00:29:11interpretation of this passage
- 00:29:14why would jesus use a guilty man to
- 00:29:17justify those who are guiltless
- 00:29:22definitely not to promote situational
- 00:29:24ethics
- 00:29:25but i present to you
- 00:29:28the possibility and the strongest
- 00:29:30understanding that he is calling out the
- 00:29:32inconsistency of the pharisees
- 00:29:35in other words think about it this way
- 00:29:38as jesus brings about david he is not
- 00:29:41justifying david's
- 00:29:43trespass
- 00:29:45he is not justifying an idea that god
- 00:29:47winked at this whole thing it turned
- 00:29:48back because david was hungry and you
- 00:29:50know okay if we have to ignore the law
- 00:29:51for him to be fed then we'll do that
- 00:29:53that's not what's happening here this is
- 00:29:55jesus using the story of david to corner
- 00:29:57the pharisees in their hypocrisy
- 00:30:01here's how the argument goes are you
- 00:30:03willing to overlook
- 00:30:06what david did and how he broke the law
- 00:30:09while you at the same time are
- 00:30:10condemning my disciples for breaking
- 00:30:12your human tradition
- 00:30:15do you see
- 00:30:17it helps to go to matthew's version to
- 00:30:18see this
- 00:30:19expound it so go to matthew chapter 12
- 00:30:22and look with me here
- 00:30:26in verse 5.
- 00:30:29and the verse is proceeding he says the
- 00:30:31same thing that he does here in mark two
- 00:30:33he brings up david but we come to
- 00:30:35matthew 12 he builds on that point and
- 00:30:37he brings up another example
- 00:30:40and so in matthew 12 5 notice what jesus
- 00:30:42says
- 00:30:45have you not read in the law how the
- 00:30:47sabbath
- 00:30:48on the sabbath the priests in the temple
- 00:30:51profane the sabbath and are guiltless
- 00:30:54so what is he saying here
- 00:30:56even the strictest pharisee wouldn't see
- 00:30:58the priest guilty
- 00:31:01on the sabbath for performing more work
- 00:31:03than any other day of the week for
- 00:31:05killing animals preparing the sacrifices
- 00:31:07performing their duties
- 00:31:09but according to their laws the priest
- 00:31:11should be guilty
- 00:31:14the priest should be hey according to
- 00:31:16your standards
- 00:31:17the priests themselves should be
- 00:31:18indicted
- 00:31:20and yet they are quick to come to the
- 00:31:22disciples in their modest grain picking
- 00:31:25and to criticize them and condemn them
- 00:31:28something that took much less effort and
- 00:31:30work than what the priest did on the
- 00:31:31sabbath
- 00:31:33now
- 00:31:34some might protest those who know their
- 00:31:36bibles well and know this story well who
- 00:31:38might have used this story to justify
- 00:31:40certain things and so the protest says
- 00:31:42brother
- 00:31:44jesus quotes hosea in chapter 12 of
- 00:31:46matthew verse 7.
- 00:31:48and what do we see in matthew 12 7
- 00:31:51jesus says and if you had known what
- 00:31:52this means
- 00:31:54i desire mercy and not sacrifice
- 00:31:58you would not have condemned the
- 00:31:59guiltless
- 00:32:01you see god is trying to show us that
- 00:32:03sometimes the most compassionate thing
- 00:32:04to do is to meet a need even though we
- 00:32:07ignored a law that might hinder that
- 00:32:09mercy from being extended you see god is
- 00:32:12promoting mercy mercy's so great that it
- 00:32:15exceeds above law keeping and rule
- 00:32:18observing
- 00:32:21but is that how jesus is applying hosea
- 00:32:25is that is again is that what jesus is
- 00:32:27doing here is he trying to
- 00:32:29make a case for situational ethics
- 00:32:32all you have to do is read the verse
- 00:32:33again in verse 7 very carefully to see
- 00:32:35no he is not that's not his point
- 00:32:38look again and if you have known what
- 00:32:40this means i desire mercy and not
- 00:32:42sacrifice you would not have condemned
- 00:32:45the guiltless
- 00:32:47that's the main point that's what he's
- 00:32:49trying to drive at
- 00:32:51you are condemning the guiltless
- 00:32:56and by quoting hosea he's actually
- 00:32:59exposing how merciless their traditions
- 00:33:02are
- 00:33:04and so he says here
- 00:33:07i desire mercy and not sacrifice you're
- 00:33:10condemning the guiltless that's how we
- 00:33:11know the disciples were guiltless and
- 00:33:13you're doing this with your supposed
- 00:33:15justification that your your observance
- 00:33:18your strict standards are some kind of a
- 00:33:22sacrifice to god
- 00:33:26when in fact they are merciless you are
- 00:33:27merciless god desires mercy
- 00:33:32but as we heard
- 00:33:36loveless spiritual sacrifice especially
- 00:33:38when it violates and
- 00:33:39contradicts his word
- 00:33:41is an abomination
- 00:33:44so understand let me say this again
- 00:33:45jesus is using david
- 00:33:47as an argument to expose the hypocrisy
- 00:33:50of the pharisees who were willing to run
- 00:33:51around with their traditions and hit
- 00:33:53people over the head when they would not
- 00:33:55dare do that to the priest who worked
- 00:33:57just as hard if not twice as hard on
- 00:33:59that day and david their beloved hero
- 00:34:02who actually broke god's law
- 00:34:05let me pause and say this at this point
- 00:34:07this is an example for us to remember
- 00:34:08something so crucial and it is to
- 00:34:10rightly divide the word of god
- 00:34:14to rightly divide the word of god lest
- 00:34:15we be found guilty promoting legalism
- 00:34:17like these pharisees or lest we make the
- 00:34:19mistake
- 00:34:20of making some room for lawlessness by
- 00:34:23misunderstanding
- 00:34:24the teachings of jesus christ
- 00:34:28and legalism and lawlessness thrive on
- 00:34:31the same malpractice
- 00:34:34if you want to know how these things
- 00:34:35grow and how they become strong and how
- 00:34:37they make way in people's lives and
- 00:34:38ministries it's actually found in
- 00:34:40matthew 12. jesus
- 00:34:42in two different verses in the same
- 00:34:45confrontation with these pharisees says
- 00:34:47in verse 3 and verse 5 have you not read
- 00:34:52have you not read have you not read what
- 00:34:54the law says have you not read what is
- 00:34:57this
- 00:34:58this is an accusation of
- 00:34:59ignorance
- 00:35:02you don't know your bible
- 00:35:05and if you know about it you have
- 00:35:07misapplied it
- 00:35:08and this malpractice is what breeds
- 00:35:12either legalism or lawlessness in our
- 00:35:14lives
- 00:35:15what is extremely needed is a careful
- 00:35:17interaction with the scriptures
- 00:35:19lest we open a door for a world of
- 00:35:22sorrow to flood the lives of naive
- 00:35:24people
- 00:35:28and so jesus here says have you not read
- 00:35:30what another scathing statement to
- 00:35:31pharisees who are apparently experts of
- 00:35:33the law you clearly didn't read you
- 00:35:35clearly didn't see it
- 00:35:37listen much of the division and in our
- 00:35:39evangelical circles can be solved if we
- 00:35:41just really get to the bible
- 00:35:43and stick with the bible
- 00:35:46on any extreme on any doctrine of this
- 00:35:48is what we should do or this is what we
- 00:35:50should not do praise god that most of
- 00:35:52those feuds are secondary issues
- 00:35:55but i want to be as close to the truth
- 00:35:57as possible
- 00:35:58that's what i want
- 00:36:00i want every facet of the will of god to
- 00:36:02be in line
- 00:36:03with the truth of my life
- 00:36:05and you want to know how we can solve
- 00:36:07most of these issues between brethren
- 00:36:09who love christ
- 00:36:10just to stick with the word i'm not
- 00:36:12concerned about your denominational
- 00:36:13tradition i really am not
- 00:36:16i'm not even concerned about what the
- 00:36:17ancient fathers believed they're not my
- 00:36:19authority
- 00:36:20have you not read
- 00:36:22have you
- 00:36:23not read
- 00:36:25jesus
- 00:36:27is my example and yours i hope
- 00:36:29and if you think that the pharisees were
- 00:36:31rattled by what he just said you would
- 00:36:33be right i would love to see the sight
- 00:36:35of these spies all for a sudden becoming
- 00:36:37silent because jesus wields the sword of
- 00:36:39the spirit i remember i was on a walk
- 00:36:42not too far from here and it was on a
- 00:36:44midday morning
- 00:36:46and uh from from a distance i saw what
- 00:36:49you cannot deny to be two mormons the
- 00:36:52bicycles gave it away
- 00:36:55the bicycles and the white dress shirts
- 00:36:56i don't mean to be i'm not trying to
- 00:36:58mock them but i'm just being honest
- 00:36:59that's how i recognize them
- 00:37:01and so i just walked and walked and
- 00:37:02walked and they were sitting there and i
- 00:37:04thought you know what let me just plop
- 00:37:05beside him and they they were young i
- 00:37:06knew that they were on mission you know
- 00:37:08mormons if you don't know this mormons
- 00:37:09dedicate if they're serious mormons two
- 00:37:11years of their life they pause on
- 00:37:13everything in life to do mission they go
- 00:37:15to a different country they raise their
- 00:37:17own funds they move away from home and
- 00:37:19they preach a false gospel
- 00:37:21for two years of their lives
- 00:37:23and most of them do have the younger
- 00:37:24years of their lives
- 00:37:26and so i sat beside them and hearing
- 00:37:27their idea of the gospel and hearing
- 00:37:29what heaven is all about and it's
- 00:37:31amazing if you study cults all cults
- 00:37:33really have a fascination for sexuality
- 00:37:36study cults very carefully and you'll
- 00:37:38realize that there's this emphasis on
- 00:37:40sex
- 00:37:42look at islam
- 00:37:43mormons what's the what's the pinnacle
- 00:37:45of glory you having a celestial wife and
- 00:37:48populating planets
- 00:37:50and so we talked about that we talked
- 00:37:52about their understanding of heaven well
- 00:37:54there's no real hell there's three tiers
- 00:37:55of heaven and if you were good enough
- 00:37:57you can get to the top tier if you don't
- 00:37:58you're in this lower compartment and so
- 00:38:00we really want to get to the top and the
- 00:38:02idea of the top is in their language
- 00:38:03enjoying family and having your loved
- 00:38:06ones and you dig deep it's much more
- 00:38:08than that
- 00:38:10and here's where the argument ended and
- 00:38:12there was different arguments but this
- 00:38:13is this is all that put a stop to any
- 00:38:16idea
- 00:38:17being proposed on their part
- 00:38:19have you not read
- 00:38:22and i looked at him and says have you
- 00:38:23not read what jesus said to the
- 00:38:24sadducees who try to make a case against
- 00:38:26the resurrection that one woman had
- 00:38:29several wives
- 00:38:30whose husband will be hers in the
- 00:38:33resurrection and jesus says you do not
- 00:38:35know
- 00:38:36the scriptures or the power of god those
- 00:38:39who will be resurrected unto life will
- 00:38:40be like the angels of god
- 00:38:43so you guys are you're motivated for
- 00:38:46your works here because you want to get
- 00:38:47to the top tier of heaven which the main
- 00:38:49theme of it is populating and having a
- 00:38:51family and jesus himself said you ain't
- 00:38:53going to get married
- 00:38:55have you not read
- 00:38:57oh would we know our bibles
- 00:38:59so that we can be free from false
- 00:39:01doctrines
- 00:39:03so we come to jesus where was i
- 00:39:07and they were talking to him about these
- 00:39:08disciples
- 00:39:13and they're rattled
- 00:39:15what is jesus going to do apologize for
- 00:39:17being too strong
- 00:39:20no he's going to
- 00:39:22he's going to up up the ante
- 00:39:24if you think they're mad now he's about
- 00:39:26to make them very mad and he's going to
- 00:39:28do so with two statements we're going to
- 00:39:30stay in matthew since we're already
- 00:39:31there
- 00:39:32two of these statements are in matthew
- 00:39:34one of them is shared with mark almost
- 00:39:35word for word
- 00:39:37and so here's what he says in verse six
- 00:39:38after he talks about the priests
- 00:39:42and matthew brings up something in verse
- 00:39:43six
- 00:39:44i tell you something greater than the
- 00:39:46temple is here
- 00:39:48why doesn't mark bring that up well if
- 00:39:50you understand matthew's main audience
- 00:39:52they were jews this would mean a lot
- 00:39:53more to the jew than the gentiles that
- 00:39:55mark was writing to so he brings up the
- 00:39:57temple he brings up the that prized
- 00:40:00building for the jewish people
- 00:40:03and he says something astounding i mean
- 00:40:05he could have stopped at bringing up
- 00:40:07david and the priest and they could have
- 00:40:08moved on but like what jesus loves to do
- 00:40:11is bring up further truth using these
- 00:40:13opportunities to amplify
- 00:40:16his person
- 00:40:17i tell you something greater than the
- 00:40:21temple is here this is after he spoke
- 00:40:23about the priests who work in the temple
- 00:40:25even on the sabbath
- 00:40:27if jesus means that he is greater than
- 00:40:29the temple which is what he is saying
- 00:40:31the one an astounding claim this is
- 00:40:32because this is what he is conveying if
- 00:40:34the priests of the physical temple pay
- 00:40:36attention to this if the priests of the
- 00:40:38physical temple were allowed to be
- 00:40:40dismissed
- 00:40:42from the binding regulations of the
- 00:40:44sabbath because the nature of their work
- 00:40:46was divinely ordained how much more
- 00:40:49should these disciples of mine be exempt
- 00:40:55because they're eating as a result of
- 00:40:57their service
- 00:40:59to what the temple is pointing to
- 00:41:02you see
- 00:41:04if you're willing to overlook the priest
- 00:41:05because of their sacrificial service in
- 00:41:07the physical house of god
- 00:41:09do you not realize that these men
- 00:41:12are working because they have been
- 00:41:13serving
- 00:41:15the one who is greater than the temple
- 00:41:18and he's here
- 00:41:22greater than the temple
- 00:41:25who does this man think he is
- 00:41:28i'll tell you who he is
- 00:41:31he is the true ark of the covenant
- 00:41:34god's presence dwelling with man he is
- 00:41:37the sacrifice that fulfills
- 00:41:39all the shadows of the ceremonies and
- 00:41:42the ordinances he is the priest who does
- 00:41:44not continually stand to perform
- 00:41:46sacrifices but now is seated at the
- 00:41:49right hand of god
- 00:41:50because his shed blood suffices
- 00:41:53the standard of god's righteousness he
- 00:41:56is our omnipresent access to the father
- 00:42:00that veil has been torn and at any time
- 00:42:02and any place in the name of jesus we
- 00:42:05can come boldly to the throne of grace
- 00:42:07he is to be worthy of all praise and
- 00:42:11reverence and adoration for his beauty
- 00:42:14outshines solomon's designs and herod's
- 00:42:17expansion to that design he is greater
- 00:42:20than the temple and he is our temple
- 00:42:23jesus christ
- 00:42:26think he stopped there
- 00:42:30i mean it's possible for these
- 00:42:32pharisees to have misunderstood what he
- 00:42:34said they did that many times
- 00:42:36maybe he did register
- 00:42:38but what jesus is about to say in his
- 00:42:40second statement shared by matthew and
- 00:42:42mark would be clear as day because
- 00:42:44how he ends this whole discourse how he
- 00:42:46ends this dialogue with these men is by
- 00:42:49saying
- 00:42:50so the son of man
- 00:42:52is lord even of the sabbath
- 00:42:57mark says it almost word for word
- 00:42:59here's the translation and it's a
- 00:43:01beautiful translation
- 00:43:03he looks at these pharisees who are
- 00:43:04running around jerusalem and the
- 00:43:06different streets of israel to try to
- 00:43:09try to find people who are breaking
- 00:43:10their law and he says you
- 00:43:13don't get
- 00:43:15to make the rules
- 00:43:17about the sabbath
- 00:43:20i do
- 00:43:22i am the lord of the sabbath i am the
- 00:43:25one who has authority over it
- 00:43:27i created it
- 00:43:29i instituted it i declared it and i
- 00:43:32alone determined what happens on it
- 00:43:36i mean i
- 00:43:38to see their faces
- 00:43:40these men who who who made so much about
- 00:43:43who they were around the sabbath and
- 00:43:45here's jesus looking at them
- 00:43:47and saying i'm the lord of the sabbath
- 00:43:50even i yes i'm lord over the sabbath up
- 00:43:52to this point in mark we've seen him
- 00:43:53lord over so many things
- 00:43:56lord over temptation lord over sin lord
- 00:43:59over demons lord over disease
- 00:44:02and here he is now saying i'm lord even
- 00:44:04of the sabbath
- 00:44:08i want to end here
- 00:44:10because again we we could be tempted to
- 00:44:13just
- 00:44:14look at that as an observation and
- 00:44:15admire the insight and not realize how
- 00:44:17it
- 00:44:18has direct instruction for our lives
- 00:44:21we get into a lot of trouble
- 00:44:23in our spiritual endeavors when we feel
- 00:44:25confident like the pharisees to add or
- 00:44:28remove rules or interpretations to the
- 00:44:30things that god has made clear in his
- 00:44:32word
- 00:44:34we get into a lot of trouble
- 00:44:38but what kind of blessing and purity
- 00:44:40comes
- 00:44:41and is assessed and is maintained in
- 00:44:44every believer
- 00:44:46especially leaders in the church
- 00:44:49who would live in light of the lordship
- 00:44:50of jesus christ in all things
- 00:44:54who would really believe that as jesus
- 00:44:56highlights the sabbath he says yes i'm
- 00:44:58even lord of the sabbath
- 00:45:01what do we what do we know
- 00:45:04what would we know
- 00:45:06if we believe that christ is lord over
- 00:45:09yes everything
- 00:45:11even fill in the blank
- 00:45:15lord you have the final say you are the
- 00:45:19lord of what we preach at this church
- 00:45:22you have
- 00:45:24complete lordship over what we sing how
- 00:45:27we deal with one another how we build
- 00:45:29our lives in your name teach us to see
- 00:45:32that your way is the only way and it is
- 00:45:35the best way teach us to understand your
- 00:45:37word that we may apply it so that you
- 00:45:40may be maximally glorified and we may be
- 00:45:42maximally blessed teach us to understand
- 00:45:45that your decrees were designed to be
- 00:45:47adorned to a certain degree for you are
- 00:45:50our lord yes the lord of everything
- 00:45:54do you want to know what happens when
- 00:45:55you and i make our own rules
- 00:45:58and i bump into a lot of christians who
- 00:45:59do
- 00:46:00about what it means to be a true
- 00:46:01follower of jesus christ you want to
- 00:46:03know what happens when we come up with
- 00:46:05our own convictions and standards
- 00:46:08that contradict this book
- 00:46:10that violate the clear teachings of
- 00:46:12jesus we get exactly what the pharisees
- 00:46:15produced
- 00:46:16by promoting their rules
- 00:46:18burdens
- 00:46:21burdens
- 00:46:25legalism clear burden it's obvious
- 00:46:30miserable people
- 00:46:32miserable ministries no joy no freedom
- 00:46:35and it doesn't even it doesn't even heal
- 00:46:38you
- 00:46:40some of the most
- 00:46:42heinous people come from legalistic
- 00:46:44backgrounds
- 00:46:46but lawlessness
- 00:46:47being loose and light with god's word
- 00:46:50that also brings burden into our lives
- 00:46:53it does
- 00:46:55of a guilty conscience
