brains in this episode I'm going to talk
  • 00:00:06
about something that I think a lot of us
  • 00:00:08
struggle with which is feeling like a
  • 00:00:09
failure feeling like we're not good at
  • 00:00:13
life or at least Our Lives what I
  • 00:00:15
learned recently about why that is and
  • 00:00:18
what I'm doing about it personally but
  • 00:00:21
first speaking of which since shooting
  • 00:00:24
this video my life is still pretty
  • 00:00:25
overwhelming my daughter is in her 8mon
  • 00:00:27
sleep regression plus more stuff landed
  • 00:00:29
on my plate that I did have any control
  • 00:00:30
over so I can tell if I'm not careful I
  • 00:00:32
am going to burn out enter Sama Sama is
  • 00:00:35
my go-to app for planning my day or week
  • 00:00:37
in such a way that I can get to the
  • 00:00:39
tasks that are most important and bump
  • 00:00:41
back any tasks that can wait which right
  • 00:00:43
now is going to have to be a lot Sama
  • 00:00:45
helps combat burnout by helping you plan
  • 00:00:47
your day so that your workload is
  • 00:00:49
reasonable and doable it also helps to
  • 00:00:51
reduce workload a key factor in Burnout
  • 00:00:54
by reducing the mental load of having to
  • 00:00:56
decide what to work on next because
  • 00:00:58
you've already decided you can plan your
  • 00:00:59
day pulling in tasks from your email
  • 00:01:01
    calendar project management software
  • 00:01:03
your brain organize your tasks in the
  • 00:01:05
order in which you want to do them then
  • 00:01:06
get started you can also set weekly
  • 00:01:08
goals that you can then tie to your
  • 00:01:10
daily tasks so you can make sure that
  • 00:01:11
what you're working on is something that
  • 00:01:13
makes sense to work on based on what you
  • 00:01:15
need to achieve that week when you have
  • 00:01:16
a brain that's screaming at you that you
  • 00:01:18
need to do all the things and then gets
  • 00:01:20
decision paralysis and ends up working
  • 00:01:22
on none of them putting you even further
  • 00:01:23
behind Sama can really help I notice a
  • 00:01:26
big difference when I use Sama
  • 00:01:28
especially when I'm able to plan my work
  • 00:01:29
date in advance because then when I show
  • 00:01:31
up to work all I have to decide before I
  • 00:01:33
get started is whether or not I want to
  • 00:01:35
shift things around if not or if I'm too
  • 00:01:37
tired to decide then I can just get
  • 00:01:38
started and save my brain's energy for
  • 00:01:40
actually doing the work being able to
  • 00:01:42
check stuff off as I go reminds me that
  • 00:01:44
I am making progress and my day feels
  • 00:01:46
even more doable as I go because the
  • 00:01:48
list of to-dos gets shorter I might not
  • 00:01:50
be finished with everything that I
  • 00:01:51
wanted to accomplish by the end of the
  • 00:01:52
day but I can do my daily wrapup when
  • 00:01:54
it's time to go home and know that I'm
  • 00:01:55
done for the day which allows me to rest
  • 00:01:58
and recharge enough to show up tomorrow

this I'm failing it a lot right now I am
  • 00:02:14
showing up late to things I'm forgetting
  • 00:02:16
    things I'm dropping the ball I don't
  • 00:02:18
think I checked my email today or
  • 00:02:20
yesterday I'm messing up in a way that I
  • 00:02:22
I haven't since before I knew how to
  • 00:02:25
work with my brain not against it as a
  • 00:02:27
teenager in my 20s I was forgetting to
  • 00:02:29
pay bills and I was relate to everything
  • 00:02:30
and I was bailing on people and like I
  • 00:02:32
feel like I was messing up a lot and
  • 00:02:35
then I learned some tools and strategies
  • 00:02:37
and I was able to be successful at
  • 00:02:39
    things in a way that I hadn't before I
  • 00:02:41
still had my struggles but I wasn't
  • 00:02:43
impaired by them in the same way and so
  • 00:02:47
I kind of got used to that like I
  • 00:02:49
enjoyed that I got successful enough and
  • 00:02:51
good enough at stuff that I was able to
  • 00:02:53
buy a house I was able to maintain a
  • 00:02:55
YouTube channel I was able to maintain a
  • 00:02:58
relationship I was able to to move in
  • 00:03:00
with this guy I was able to have a baby
  • 00:03:02
I was able to write a book I was able to
  • 00:03:04
do all these things and I got used to
  • 00:03:06
being able to add things to my life in
  • 00:03:10
the way that I wanted to not that I
  • 00:03:12
didn't still struggle with a lot of
  • 00:03:14
things I did but more often than not I
  • 00:03:17
was reliable and that's just completely
  • 00:03:19
Fallen apart I'm messing up constantly
  • 00:03:22
I'm constantly apologizing to people I
  • 00:03:24
feel like I'm failing only this time I
  • 00:03:27
have the benefit of knowing that this
  • 00:03:29
isn't just inherent to my character this
  • 00:03:31
isn't just the way that I am all of the
  • 00:03:33
time because I just suck as a human
  • 00:03:35
being something's going on what's going
  • 00:03:37
    on well I had a baby I have a
  • 00:03:39
7-month-old that added a lot to my plate
  • 00:03:42
it's really taxing on my executive
  • 00:03:44
function and I was talking to my psych
  • 00:03:46
the other day and she's like well of
  • 00:03:47
course you're struggling you don't have
  • 00:03:50
the infrastructure in place to support
  • 00:03:53
how much youve built she was right like
  • 00:03:57
I have a tendency to like as soon as I
  • 00:03:59
can take on more I do because I want to
  • 00:04:02
have a full fulfilling life and that's
  • 00:04:04
what I thought it took I set out to
  • 00:04:06
learn all these tools and strategies so
  • 00:04:08
that I could do all of these things that
  • 00:04:10
    I wanted to do I wanted a career I
  • 00:04:12
wanted the house I wanted the kids I
  • 00:04:13
wanted the relationship I wanted all the
  • 00:04:15
things I wanted to do all the things
  • 00:04:17
right and that worked up until a point
  • 00:04:20
but now I've got so much going on that
  • 00:04:23
even with this really strong toolbox
  • 00:04:25
it's not enough and I'm still failing
  • 00:04:28
    and my psych told me
  • 00:04:30
when a city doesn't have the
  • 00:04:32
    infrastructure to support the buildings
  • 00:04:34
that exist it has two options it can
  • 00:04:38
Shore up the infrastructure or it can
  • 00:04:41
stop building and that had not occurred
  • 00:04:43
to me Shoring up the infrastructure yeah
  • 00:04:44
I could adjust my meds a little bit I
  • 00:04:45
could learn a couple new tools and
  • 00:04:47
strategies but really in my case the
  • 00:04:49
issue was that I had overbuilt my life I
  • 00:04:52
have added so many things to my life
  • 00:04:54
it's taking an enormous amount of
  • 00:04:56
    infrastructure essentially to support it
  • 00:04:59
I'm going to tore up the infrastructure
  • 00:05:00
but what I'm realizing I need to do is
  • 00:05:02
stop building and that's really freaking
  • 00:05:05
hard cuz I do want to do all the things
  • 00:05:07
and the whole point of me learning how
  • 00:05:10
my brain works and how to work with it
  • 00:05:11
not against it was so that I could do
  • 00:05:13
all the things and it sucks it's awful
  • 00:05:17
to be told you got to stop adding stuff
  • 00:05:19
to your life cuz I want a full and
  • 00:05:21
fulfilling life but when I think about
  • 00:05:23
it it's not a fulfilling life to be
  • 00:05:26
dropping the ball all the time it's not
  • 00:05:28
a fulfilling life to be miserable and
  • 00:05:30
stressed out running from one thing to
  • 00:05:32
another it's not a fulfilling life if
  • 00:05:33
you don't have time to enjoy the things
  • 00:05:36
that you have this infinite growth
  • 00:05:38
mindset I'm going to add more and then
  • 00:05:40
when that gets boring I'm going to add
  • 00:05:41
more and I'm going to add more and I'm
  • 00:05:42
going to add more and that's going to
  • 00:05:43
make my life better and that's going to
  • 00:05:44
make my life better realizing at some
  • 00:05:46
point like it actually objectively makes
  • 00:05:48
your life worse makes you go okay like
  • 00:05:50
so what would it look like if I stopped
  • 00:05:53
building how could I improve my life
  • 00:05:57
other than adding more and so what
  • 00:05:59
happened happens when you're at a point
  • 00:06:00
in your life where you've added too much
  • 00:06:03
it really is at the point where I need
  • 00:06:06
to stop building and I don't know what
  • 00:06:09
else to do so I'm having to solve that
  • 00:06:11
like in real time and I'm sharing this
  • 00:06:12
with you cuz I don't know it might be
  • 00:06:14
relatable to to somebody else there are
  • 00:06:16
ways to make your life fulfilling that
  • 00:06:19
don't involve adding more to it but what
  • 00:06:22
are those things and I've been having to
  • 00:06:23
think about this and I think one of them
  • 00:06:24
is curating I can improve my life not
  • 00:06:27
just by adding new and exciting things
  • 00:06:29
to it but by really thinking about what
  • 00:06:31
I want to include in it maybe taking
  • 00:06:33
some stuff off my plate unbuilding I
  • 00:06:35
guess I could unbuild unbuilding things
  • 00:06:37
that aren't serving me another way is to
  • 00:06:40
    recognize if you're overfunctioning if
  • 00:06:42
    essentially your infrastructure isn't
  • 00:06:44
enough to support the buildings in your
  • 00:06:45
city because you're sending a lot of
  • 00:06:47
those resources to another city you're
  • 00:06:48
doing things for other people that they
  • 00:06:50
should really be doing for themselves as
  • 00:06:52
a way of you know managing your anxiety
  • 00:06:54
through external control yeah yeah I
  • 00:06:56
    totally do that pulling your
  • 00:06:57
infrastructure in back into your city
  • 00:06:59
what makes City great is it like the
  • 00:07:01
number of buildings it's like does it
  • 00:07:02
have a library and a school like does it
  • 00:07:04
have the things in it that create a full
  • 00:07:06
and fulfilling life and then also
  • 00:07:08
looking at how much energy am I sending
  • 00:07:11
to any one particular building am I
  • 00:07:13
being perfectionistic about it I am
  • 00:07:16
    definitely being perfectionistic about
  • 00:07:18
being a good mom trademark I'm
  • 00:07:20
    definitely being perfectionistic about
  • 00:07:21
making sure that I'm signing her up for
  • 00:07:22
swim classes and doing mayy wearing
  • 00:07:24
dance classes and buying all the right
  • 00:07:25
toys and exposing her to all the
  • 00:07:27
allergens like I'm doing so many things
  • 00:07:29
things maybe I can do all the things but
  • 00:07:31
maybe I don't need to be doing all of
  • 00:07:32
them at the same time and it's probably
  • 00:07:34
actually important that I don't because
  • 00:07:36
I don't want to pass this on to my
  • 00:07:37
daughter this idea that like you have to
  • 00:07:39
be doing all the things to the point
  • 00:07:41
that you are exhausted and miserable
  • 00:07:42
because I kind of am cuz we live in this
  • 00:07:44
Society that's like more more more do
  • 00:07:46
more be more have more if I had the time
  • 00:07:49
and the energy and the resources to do
  • 00:07:51
all the things I'm trying to do yeah
  • 00:07:53
that would be a very nice fulfilling
  • 00:07:55
life but I don't I am stretched too thin
  • 00:07:58
I'm racing from one thing to another I'm
  • 00:08:00
not able to sit and enjoy a lot of the
  • 00:08:02
things that I would like to be able to
  • 00:08:04
be present for and enjoy I've overbuilt
  • 00:08:06
and I need to stop building what are the
  • 00:08:08
other options in terms of improving your
  • 00:08:10
life well one is to have the
  • 00:08:13
    infrastructure to support the things
  • 00:08:14
that you're doing that actually is an
  • 00:08:16
objectively better life if you can
  • 00:08:19
manage what you have on your plate
  • 00:08:21
you're going to enjoy life more so just
  • 00:08:24
by stopping building like that actually
  • 00:08:26
can improve your life being really
  • 00:08:28
    mindful of
  • 00:08:30
what you're doing and being present for
  • 00:08:32
it even if it's not a fun thing that
  • 00:08:33
you're doing just being mindful being
  • 00:08:35
present is objectively like a better
  • 00:08:38
experience than trying to do something
  • 00:08:40
while thinking about the next thing you
  • 00:08:41
have to do and worrying about tomorrow
  • 00:08:43
and you know the past and all of that
  • 00:08:44
curating what's in my life getting rid
  • 00:08:47
of some stuff that isn't serving me
  • 00:08:49
before I add something else that like
  • 00:08:51
will the reason I wanted to share this
  • 00:08:52
is because it just hadn't occurred to me
  • 00:08:55
that you could improve your life without
  • 00:08:58
adding things to it and gratitude I was
  • 00:09:00
Googling curating your life and one of
  • 00:09:02
the things that I saw is like practicing
  • 00:09:04
gratitude for things you already have
  • 00:09:06
instead of buying more there's stuff
  • 00:09:08
that I have that I really value that I
  • 00:09:09
don't even see because I don't have the
  • 00:09:12
time to engage with it and so I don't
  • 00:09:15
necessarily need to add more things or

more activities I could just revisit the
  • 00:09:20
activities and things that I already
  • 00:09:22
have and sit with them and enjoy them
  • 00:09:24
and be grateful for them I'm rotating
  • 00:09:26
right like this is the season 4
  • 00:09:29
next season maybe I can rotate something
  • 00:09:32
out and rotate something else in so my
  • 00:09:34
psych was right I don't have the
  • 00:09:35
    infrastructure currently to support
  • 00:09:37
everything that I built partly because
  • 00:09:39
like I have built these things based on
  • 00:09:42
    neurotypical standards and I'm not
  • 00:09:43
neurotypical I watched my mom have all
  • 00:09:46
of these things and so I was like well
  • 00:09:48
that's what I want to have all of those
  • 00:09:49
things and it made her happy but she was
  • 00:09:51
able to stay on top of it she was able
  • 00:09:53
to manage it in a way that I struggled
  • 00:09:55
to and so what made her happy might make
  • 00:09:57
me miserable and I think there's still a
  • 00:09:59
part of me that's like but if I'm not
  • 00:10:01
doing all the things then I am failing
  • 00:10:03
right that might be somebody else's
  • 00:10:05
measure of success right like I checked
  • 00:10:06
all the boxes I do all the things but
  • 00:10:09
understanding what your limits are and
  • 00:10:11
working within those limits is not
  • 00:10:13
failure that is success for me being
  • 00:10:17
successful means I like what I've built
  • 00:10:20
I value what I've built and I have the
  • 00:10:21
infrastructure in place to support it so
  • 00:10:23
then I don't just look successful at
  • 00:10:25
life from the outside I get to be
  • 00:10:28
successful at my life life I'm curious
  • 00:10:30
what you do if you want to improve your
  • 00:10:33
life what do you do other than get more
  • 00:10:35
perfectionistic or add more stuff to
  • 00:10:36
your life how else might you build a
  • 00:10:38
fulfilling life for yourself I would
  • 00:10:40
very very much like to know your answers
  • 00:10:43
