摘要

I compose a lot of music for different
  • 00:00:01
projects there's one rule I use that
  • 00:00:03
helps me write better music with less
  • 00:00:05
stress less overwhelm more fun and
  • 00:00:08
creativity when I forget this rule which
  • 00:00:10
is too often writing gets harder more
  • 00:00:12
overwhelming less creative not so fun so
  • 00:00:15
I'm going to show you that rule plus
  • 00:00:16
three different examples of how I've
  • 00:00:18
used it and how you can use it too so
  • 00:00:20
here's the rule the more limits you set
  • 00:00:23
the more freedom you get this comes from
  • 00:00:25
    the legendary composer Igor Stravinsky
  • 00:00:27
he said The more constraints one impose
  • 00:00:30
es the more one frees oneself of the
  • 00:00:32
chains that shackle the spirit and he
  • 00:00:34
goes even further he says my freedom
  • 00:00:36
will be so much the greater and more
  • 00:00:38
meaningful the more narrowly I limit my
  • 00:00:41
field of action and the more I surround
  • 00:00:43
myself with obstacles and this is one of
  • 00:00:45
the greatest composers of the 20th
  • 00:00:46
century so the reason I'm making this is
  • 00:00:48
cuz I was producing for a client
  • 00:00:49
recently and I was getting overwhelmed
  • 00:00:51
by the scope of the project you know I
  • 00:00:53
work in a modern Daw I've got literally
  • 00:00:56
hundreds if not thousands of instruments
  • 00:00:57
to choose from it sometimes feels like
  • 00:00:59
when I scroll through my library I just
  • 00:01:01
have infinite options and in reality
  • 00:01:03
it's just too much what winds up
  • 00:01:04
happening is you get decision fatigue
  • 00:01:06
and it can make a project feel really
  • 00:01:08
overwhelming and daunting so the answer
  • 00:01:10
is to set limits this Narrows your focus
  • 00:01:13
down instead of thinking how do I make
  • 00:01:15
this song with infinity options it
  • 00:01:17
becomes how do I make this song with
  • 00:01:19
only four instruments or with only these
  • 00:01:22
notes or with only these plugins and
  • 00:01:24
then the whole creative act becomes this
  • 00:01:26
fun challenge or problem to solve rather
  • 00:01:28
than an overwhelming obst obstacle to
  • 00:01:30
overcome so let me walk you through
  • 00:01:32
three ways that I've used limitations
  • 00:01:33
recently in my own music and how you can
  • 00:01:35
do it too the first limit is limit your
  • 00:01:38
instruments I find it interesting that
  • 00:01:40
so many of the great composers wouldn't
  • 00:01:42
mainly write just for orchestra and I
  • 00:01:44
think it's so tempting for amateur
  • 00:01:45
composers to always want to write for
  • 00:01:47
full massive Orchestra but the great
  • 00:01:48
composers were so often writing for very
  • 00:01:51
few instruments string quartets or trios
  • 00:01:54
or quintets just three four five
  • 00:01:56
    instruments I remember talking with
  • 00:01:58
Austin wintery and he says I'm composing
  • 00:01:59
my next game score for four tubers I
  • 00:02:02
said why four tubers and he said cuz I
  • 00:02:04
want to and I sort of get that because
  • 00:02:06
when you create these constraints or
  • 00:02:08
limitations it makes the rest of the
  • 00:02:10
creative act a lot more fun how do I
  • 00:02:12
make this game score work with just four
  • 00:02:14
tubers so here's how I used it I had to
  • 00:02:16
write this arrangement of In The Bleak
  • 00:02:18
Midwinter at Christmas Carol for only
  • 00:02:20
three High voices and weirdly I found
  • 00:02:23
this much more fun than when I've
  • 00:02:25
written Coral music for eight voices or
  • 00:02:27
16 voices writing for just three voices
  • 00:02:29
creates all these mini challenges you
  • 00:02:31
know how do I create Harmony and Melody
  • 00:02:34
from only three voices how do you create
  • 00:02:36
motion and momentum from three voices
  • 00:02:39
and there are other things like how do I
  • 00:02:40
make sure each voice gets to sing one
  • 00:02:42
verse and then how do I smoothly change
  • 00:02:45
key so that here the alto can sing a
  • 00:02:47
verse in her range how many different
  • 00:02:49
textures can I create with just three
  • 00:02:51
lines I loved finding this one for the
  • 00:02:53
    final verse where it goes
  • 00:02:59
    [Music]
  • 00:03:07
I guarantee I wouldn't have come up with
  • 00:03:09
that kind of texture or something nearly
  • 00:03:11
as nice if I'd been writing for 16
  • 00:03:13
voices and writing in this way also
  • 00:03:15
created more surprises for me it
  • 00:03:17
reminded me of the beautiful Simplicity
  • 00:03:19
that you can create from just three
  • 00:03:21
lines like if you listen to this ending
  • 00:03:27
    [Music]
  • 00:03:37
that all comes from limiting your scope
  • 00:03:40
if I hadn't limited it that would never
  • 00:03:42
have been written I'll put the whole
  • 00:03:43
piece on my channel in case you want to
  • 00:03:44
listen to that or if you want to perform
  • 00:03:46
it write to me you know I'd love that
  • 00:03:48
the next way I impose limits on my
  • 00:03:49
composing is by limiting the number of
  • 00:03:52
notes limit the scale so I wanted to
  • 00:03:54
write something huge and orchestral you
  • 00:03:56
    know shamefully I actually never
  • 00:03:58
finished this project because real life
  • 00:03:59
got in the way but in order to set a
  • 00:04:02
limit I decided to limit how many notes
  • 00:04:04
I was allowed to use in the scale this
  • 00:04:06
was inspired by Alan Silvestri I've been
  • 00:04:08
studying his score to Back to the Future
  • 00:04:10
and I loved how he would use the
  • 00:04:12
octatonic scale in action sequences and
  • 00:04:14
I wrote them on a piece of paper so I
  • 00:04:16
    think it was E F G A B flat C CSH and
  • 00:04:23
dsh and I wasn't allowed to use any
  • 00:04:25
other notes and I was amazed at the
  • 00:04:27
    harmonies and chords and progressions
  • 00:04:29
and key changes that you can come up
  • 00:04:31
with when you're only using eight notes
  • 00:04:33
and that limitation made composing a
  • 00:04:35
whole lot more fun it made it like a
  • 00:04:37
game like a challenge you know you're
  • 00:04:38
    problem solving it's no longer
  • 00:04:40
overwhelming but it becomes a fun
  • 00:04:41
constraint so here's a little snippet of
  • 00:04:43
how far you can go with just eight notes
  • 00:05:00
so the next kind of limitation I would
  • 00:05:02
call A Creative challenge or a creative
  • 00:05:04
limitation Challenge and you can go wild
  • 00:05:07
with what kind of limits you set here so
  • 00:05:09
during covid I was literally locked in a
  • 00:05:11
friend's house for months but the cool
  • 00:05:14
thing was her downstairs was filled with
  • 00:05:16
    really interesting instruments so I
  • 00:05:18
thought what if I compose something
  • 00:05:19
using only her instruments plus any
  • 00:05:22
other free instruments that other people
  • 00:05:24
have created during Co and so I looked
  • 00:05:26
through websites like piano book to find
  • 00:05:28
    free instruments that were created
  • 00:05:30
during lockdown so I wasn't limiting the
  • 00:05:33
number of instruments I was using I
  • 00:05:34
wasn't limiting the number of notes I
  • 00:05:36
could use it was a creative limit create
  • 00:05:39
music using only the free things that I
  • 00:05:41
have around me in isolation and that
  • 00:05:43
made the whole thing so much more fun
  • 00:05:45
and it also created a really cool piece
  • 00:05:46
of content that did pretty well on my
  • 00:05:48
    Instagram
  • 00:05:51
    [Music]
  • 00:05:57
    [Music]
  • 00:06:22
so that's the rule and that's just three
  • 00:06:24
of infinite ways that you can use this
  • 00:06:26
rule so let me know in the comments if
  • 00:06:27
you have other cool ideas or constraints
  • 00:06:29
that you could use to make your music
  • 00:06:31
more creative and that's what I'm going
  • 00:06:32
to do now I'm going to create some
  • 00:06:34
constraints to make my current project
  • 00:06:36
more fun creative and less overwhelming
