00:00:00
at least 13 kids were killed and four
00:00:02
others were injured in air strikes
00:00:04
recently according to UNICEF the
00:00:06
location not Lebanon not occupied
00:00:09
Palestine but Sudan yes the genocide
00:00:12
that gets little to no coverage in
00:00:14
today's media because of that here is a
00:00:17
short refresher in 2019 Sudan was
00:00:19
supposed to welcome a new era of
00:00:21
democracy after overthrowing then
00:00:23
dictator in Chief Omar Al Basher two
00:00:25
years later however it all fell apart
00:00:27
when Sudan's military together with the
00:00:28
paramilitary rapid support forces the
00:00:31
rsf for short arrested the country's
00:00:33
primee Minister and threw civilians out
00:00:35
of their power sharing agreement that
00:00:37
top chair however was not big enough for
00:00:39
both groups as the Army and the rsf
00:00:42
started a war that continues to kill
00:00:43
thousands while displacing Millions
00:00:45
we've talked about humanitarian crisis
00:00:47
on this show several times before but to
00:00:49
give you an idea of how bad the
00:00:51
situation is in Sudan right now Reuters
00:00:53
reported just recently that residents
00:00:56
displaced by fighting or under siege in
00:00:58
their homes have resorted to eating dirt
00:01:01
and
00:01:02
leaves yes dirt and leaves and look as I
00:01:05
said before it didn't get this bad only
00:01:07
recently it's been this bad for months
00:01:09
we just haven't been paying attention in
00:01:11
February the Associated Press reported
00:01:13
that 13 children died of die of
00:01:15
malnutrition each day at a camp for the
00:01:18
displaced in Northern darur more than
00:01:20
75% of health facilities are out of
00:01:22
operation more than 20,000 cases of
00:01:24
color recorded this year alone people
00:01:26
have no idea across the world that this
00:01:28
is happening in Sudan in fact according
00:01:30
to a new poll by data for Progress here
00:01:33
in the United States when Americans were
00:01:34
asked how much they knew about what was
00:01:36
happening in Sudan 36% said they knew a
00:01:39
little 59% said nothing at all well
00:01:43
joining me on this show today is someone
00:01:44
that knows a lot more about what is
00:01:46
happening in Sudan Khaled ala is a
00:01:48
Sudanese artist producer writer and
00:01:51
Soros fellow and he joins me now from
00:01:53
Italy KH thanks so much uh for coming on
00:01:56
the show um people don't know very much
00:01:59
about what has happening in Sudan as I
00:02:00
mentioned the polling shows that
00:02:02
Americans are pretty ignorant about it
00:02:04
we know the Army a few weeks ago
00:02:06
launched a major offensive to regain
00:02:07
territory in the capital in in carum
00:02:09
that they lost to the rsf but just big
00:02:12
picture how bad are things right now in
00:02:15
Sudan as a whole given so much focus is
00:02:18
on Gaza Lebanon Ukraine uh it's it's big
00:02:22
picture and small picture is very bad in
00:02:24
Sudan right now uh in terms of the um
00:02:27
it's it's basically a displacement
00:02:30
um a hugee displacement situation crisis
00:02:34
uh we have a Health crisis uh we have uh
00:02:36
epidemics like a lot of colera right now
00:02:38
is is is turning up there's uh not
00:02:41
enough hospitals for everyone it's it's
00:02:43
it's a really bad situation um in all
00:02:46
areas of Sudan even even in the safe
00:02:49
areas of where the Army is located and
00:02:52
of course the ignorance about Sudan
00:02:54
abroad is partly manufactured by the
00:02:57
military and the militias because they
00:02:59
as in Gaza have blocked journalists from
00:03:01
going into places they have targeted
00:03:03
journalists they've killed journalists
00:03:04
detained journalists done internet
00:03:07
blackouts it's very hard for people to
00:03:09
find out what's happening on the ground
00:03:10
in Sudan how do people like yourself
00:03:12
people in the diaspora how do they keep
00:03:14
touch with family friends back home how
00:03:15
do you get updates as to what's going on
00:03:17
how hard is it it's it's extremely hard
00:03:21
it's extremely hard uh one of my friends
00:03:23
who recently uh moved from the rsf areas
00:03:26
to the uh the safe Army areas he said
00:03:29
it's more dangerous to have a camera
00:03:31
than to have a weapon wow in in in the
00:03:34
rsf areas so that's that's one of the
00:03:36
main reasons why there's not enough
00:03:38
footage coming out of of of Sudan and
00:03:40
sadly because you know news at the end
00:03:42
of the day became entertainment and you
00:03:43
need to be killed in four four four you
00:03:45
know for the 4G or whatever it's called
00:03:47
to to 4K for you to be um you know uh
00:03:51
broadcasted and that's and that's one of
00:03:53
the issues so um there's there's lack of
00:03:57
footage coming out because it's it's
00:03:58
very dangerous to have camera
00:04:00
and there's not a lot of people that
00:04:02
feel safe uh to be in Sudan there's very
00:04:05
brave journalists right now you know you
00:04:07
can you can count them in one hand
00:04:09
basically journalist from Al jaer
00:04:10
journalist from Al Arabia that are
00:04:12
located in Kum right now but it's it's
00:04:14
it's it's incredibly hard to find any
00:04:17
source of credible news and uh that
00:04:19
makes even the situation worse because
00:04:21
the the the war became kind of a media
00:04:24
War uh between the videos that the rsf
00:04:26
soldiers uh shoot about themselves and
00:04:28
the videos that the army solders sh
00:04:30
about themselves so this is all you got
00:04:31
and it's basically WhatsApp family
00:04:34
groups yes and of course the distrust
00:04:36
between the rsf and the Army is so high
00:04:38
that the price is being paid by innocent
00:04:40
civilians caught in the middle um a
00:04:42
recent un fact-f finding Mission found
00:04:43
that 63 out of 65 people Tried by Army
00:04:47
convened Courts for working for the rsf
00:04:49
were actually Aid workers and
00:04:52
activists absolutely absolutely I mean
00:04:55
that you really don't know what is the
00:04:57
truth and it's it's exactly the same
00:05:00
situation that is happening everywhere
00:05:02
else it's it's um you know very uh kind
00:05:06
of even football holigans uh kind of
00:05:08
looking at the war you know if you're
00:05:10
with the Army you're 100% with the Army
00:05:12
no matter how many people they killed no
00:05:14
matter how many mistakes they make they
00:05:16
still cheer for the Army if you were the
00:05:18
rsf it doesn't matter if they are you
00:05:20
know genocidal it doesn't matter if
00:05:22
they're killing innocent people if
00:05:23
doesn't matter if they're shooting at
00:05:24
schools and hospitals they're still with
00:05:26
the rsf it's it's incredible and that
00:05:29
again back to the lack of real trusted
00:05:32
news coming out of Sudan KH you of
00:05:34
course are an artist and you use your
00:05:36
art to tell the story of Sudan in ways
00:05:38
that word simply cannot um the war in
00:05:41
Sudan is one with several players
00:05:42
involved from outside of the country uh
00:05:45
you displayed so much of the that aspect
00:05:47
of the story in a drawing that you
00:05:49
posted uh in August that we're putting
00:05:51
up on screen could you explain to our
00:05:53
audience the meaning behind this piece
00:05:55
and give us some of the background on
00:05:57
the actors playing puppeteers in all of
00:06:00
this I mean it's it's really the same
00:06:03
players uh in the whole region right you
00:06:06
have you have two teams you have the the
00:06:08
of course from the Arab Spring until
00:06:11
today uh these two teams have learned to
00:06:15
um how to play the game sadly and uh in
00:06:19
Sudan because the revolution happened in
00:06:21
Sudan in
00:06:22
2013 and uh and later on again and then
00:06:25
again finally in 2019 with the
00:06:28
revolution so uh when the revolution
00:06:31
happened I think uh the
00:06:33
counterrevolution forces whether it's
00:06:34
you know the Saudis the emiratis the the
00:06:37
the Egyptians on one side really kind of
00:06:41
um were ready to see what the next move
00:06:44
is right so they did the same moves that
00:06:47
they did in Yemen they did in Libya they
00:06:49
did in Egypt yeah it's the same scenario
00:06:53
right so they put on a a
00:06:55
military uh uh uh two leaders of the
00:06:58
military and and uh military Council uh
00:07:02
they put the civilians that they would
00:07:03
like to see um on the table the ones
00:07:06
they don't like to see are pushed out
00:07:08
and they create of course the lack of
00:07:10
media the we saw the you know the the
00:07:12
war on uh Twitter uh the fake accounts
00:07:15
the the troll Farms it's exactly the
00:07:18
same thing that keeps happening every
00:07:21
time right and uh they played a a big
00:07:24
role in the in the way that uh the war
00:07:27
tend up today and uh how it happened and
00:07:31
where it happened it's literally they're
00:07:33
reading from the same
00:07:34
book I mean one country in particular
00:07:36
that even American politicians are now
00:07:38
singling out in Congress is the UAE
00:07:40
which is an ally of the US United Arab
00:07:41
Emirates which has been supporting
00:07:43
militias on the ground what do you make
00:07:45
of the role of a country like the UAE
00:07:47
when it comes to the fighting on the
00:07:49
ground in
00:07:52
Sudan I mean of course they're denying
00:07:54
it but everybody knows it there were
00:07:56
there were weapons found and even before
00:07:58
the war had started they have took on
00:08:01
hamiti as their kind of child prodige
00:08:04
their next ha you know and what they
00:08:06
wanted to do I think with HTI was avoid
00:08:09
that the mistake that they've done in
00:08:11
Yemen uh they didn't want to create
00:08:14
another houthi so they got thei on their
00:08:16
side and ouri was basically right so
00:08:19
they have him on his side they grew him
00:08:21
they grew his forces he was fighting the
00:08:23
war for in Yemen for them they had so
00:08:25
many plans for them because at the end
00:08:27
of the day he was uh Young he was
00:08:29
ambitious and this is really what uh the
00:08:32
Arab Spring or the young people want
00:08:34
everywhere right in in the region a
00:08:36
young person and uh so they wanted him
00:08:40
you know PR uh there was a a Canadian uh
00:08:44
company run by an exmad that was doing a
00:08:48
whole lot of whitewashing for HTI even
00:08:50
though he is the same person that
00:08:52
committed uh the 2003 and 2006 genocides
00:08:55
in in Dar
00:08:56
War all of that disappeared you know and
00:08:59
then he was a new person and then the
00:09:02
the emiratis basically kind of made him
00:09:04
play this this new role of the Savior uh
00:09:07
after after uh the Revolution and when
00:09:11
uh the when the when the war started you
00:09:14
know when the war started they basically
00:09:15
were behind them they uh they had an and
00:09:19
in the in in the in the surrounding
00:09:21
countries as well so they had an airport
00:09:23
in Chad that delivers weapons and of
00:09:26
course they have uh um the on the other
00:09:30
side so they were basically surrounding
00:09:32
it from from all sides and this kind of
00:09:34
now broke Sudan into different players
00:09:35
so you have uh the libyans the chadin uh
00:09:39
on one side and of course you have Ahmed
00:09:41
in Ethiopia on one side and then you
00:09:42
have the Egyptians who want more um the
00:09:45
Army than uh than the rsf because the
00:09:49
the the Sudanese Army and the the the
00:09:50
Egyptian Army always work together it
00:09:52
was always an extension of each other
00:09:54
and they see um HTI as more of um more
00:10:00
of chaos than than what the Army is
00:10:02
supposed to represent which is more of
00:10:04
just securing the area making sure that
00:10:07
U you know you mentioned the army during
00:10:10
his speech at the UN General Assembly in
00:10:12
New York recently Sudan's military
00:10:13
leader Abdul Fat Al bran he claimed that
00:10:16
the military is still committed to a
00:10:17
transfer of power to an elected
00:10:19
government a coalition government if
00:10:20
need be uh with the prerequisite being
00:10:22
the complete disarmament of this militia
00:10:24
the rsf the withdrawal of their forces
00:10:27
do the people of Sudan if I can even
00:10:29
make a sweeping Claim about such a big
00:10:31
group of people do they trust the
00:10:33
current government the military to bring
00:10:35
an end to this war and do you think any
00:10:36
of that can even happen do they think it
00:10:38
can happen without external
00:10:42
intervention most of the people of
00:10:44
Sudan most of the people that had to
00:10:46
escape Sudan are now very happy with the
00:10:50
advancements that the Army is making not
00:10:52
because we love the Army but because of
00:10:54
we know how dangerous the rsf is and
00:10:58
what and how they're back by the UAE
00:11:00
with and we see the situation that any
00:11:02
country that was backed by the UAE
00:11:03
whether it's uh Egypt or Libya we see we
00:11:05
see what happens the country divides and
00:11:08
then you you you know you lived under
00:11:09
the good dictator for you know we don't
00:11:11
know how how long uh so most of the Army
00:11:15
is willing um and kind of cheering for
00:11:19
uh most of the country is kind of
00:11:20
cheering for the Army right now because
00:11:22
they know that if the Army wins we're
00:11:24
going right back to the street to fight
00:11:26
that Army it's not it's not for the love
00:11:28
of the army yeah right and and this is
00:11:30
it's it's a small thing that happened
00:11:32
less of
00:11:33
two people from the old regime came back
00:11:36
to Port Sudan where the Army uh where
00:11:38
it's basically the new capital Now And
00:11:41
the rsf tried to make that as see the
00:11:43
old regime is coming back they're part
00:11:44
of the part of the Army and the whole
00:11:47
the internet the Sudanese internet came
00:11:49
back and said we are still for the
00:11:52
revolution we don't care if they come
00:11:54
back we will still fight them we are
00:11:56
here for December and we will still be
00:11:59
here for
00:12:00
debly last question just sticking to the
00:12:02
issue of intervention that same data for
00:12:04
Progress poll I cited a moment ago asked
00:12:07
Americans what they think their
00:12:08
country's role should be in Sudan 51%
00:12:11
said the US should help end the war
00:12:12
through diplomatic efforts 133% said
00:12:15
they should do the same using military
00:12:16
efforts what role if any can the US play
00:12:19
in bringing the war to an end in
00:12:22
Sudan I think just putting pressure real
00:12:25
pressure would would would really end
00:12:28
this war
00:12:29
uh at the end of the day the the UAE
00:12:32
should be pressured into stopping uh
00:12:35
supplying weapons to the rsf right and
00:12:38
the Army I think will sit down if if
00:12:41
they feel that the the rsf doesn't have
00:12:43
enough power uh to fight them for longer
00:12:46
if there is real pressure put on both
00:12:49
the Army and the rsf and their suppliers
00:12:51
this war will stop we can only hope khed
00:12:54
