what if I told you that thing you're
  • 00:00:02
chasing isn't really what you're looking
  • 00:00:05
for whether it's that promotion a raise
  • 00:00:09
    the perfect
  • 00:00:11
body that's just a drop in the bucket to
  • 00:00:14
    what you really
  • 00:00:16
need I spent the last 40 years of my
  • 00:00:19
life as an adult going through life
  • 00:00:22
    figuring things
  • 00:00:23
out and I like to share those
  • 00:00:25
perspectives with you and I'd like to
  • 00:00:28
spend a few minutes with you
  • 00:00:30
letting you know what I've learned in
  • 00:00:32
    the last 40
  • 00:00:34
years Jim where did this come from well
  • 00:00:38
    I'll tell
  • 00:00:40
you I was asked to give the midyear
  • 00:00:42
    graduation
  • 00:00:43
speech 40 years after I graduated high
  • 00:00:49
school where did the time go and it
  • 00:00:52
    really got me thinking about
  • 00:00:55
    life what I've
  • 00:00:57
    accomplished what I've learned
  • 00:01:02
and let me start with this if I could go
  • 00:01:05
back and tell my 18-year-old self this I
  • 00:01:07
    would tell
  • 00:01:08
him time is the most precious commodity
  • 00:01:11
    you've
  • 00:01:14
got you can't get one single second back
  • 00:01:17
    to play
  • 00:01:18
    again live every single
  • 00:01:21
    second like it
  • 00:01:24
matters because you're going to blink
  • 00:01:26
    your eyes
  • 00:01:27
Jim and you're going to be 40 years
  • 00:01:30
removed from high school and that time's
  • 00:01:33
going to have flown by like it was
  • 00:01:36
yesterday and one thing about time is
  • 00:01:40
you get to choose how you spend it how
  • 00:01:42
you live it who you spend it
  • 00:01:46
with and if you're spending it with
  • 00:01:48
    people who don't value your
  • 00:01:50
    time reconsider
  • 00:01:53
that because maybe they're not worth
  • 00:01:55
    your
  • 00:01:57
time time is the most precious commodity
  • 00:02:00
it's the only one we can't make more of
  • 00:02:03
and it's going to continue to pass
  • 00:02:06
on whether you like it or
  • 00:02:08
    not so
  • 00:02:10
Jim and folks out there choose your time
  • 00:02:14
wisely spend your time wisely make every
  • 00:02:18
    second
  • 00:02:19
count in my adult life I've had about
  • 00:02:23
    eight or 10 different
  • 00:02:26
careers and I throw up the air quotes
  • 00:02:28
because none of them for more than a few
  • 00:02:31
years you see I spent 20 years bouncing
  • 00:02:35
around from stock broker to house
  • 00:02:39
    painter to self-employed painting
  • 00:02:42
contractor to chemical salesman to cell
  • 00:02:45
phone salesman to project manager to
  • 00:02:49
remodeling contractor and now a teacher
  • 00:02:52
and in each and every one of those they
  • 00:02:54
were a vehicle to help me pay my bills
  • 00:02:57
to support my family and most most
  • 00:03:00
importantly teach me about life teach me
  • 00:03:03
that it doesn't matter what you do who
  • 00:03:06
    you are matters
  • 00:03:08
more your work ethic the kind of
  • 00:03:11
    impression that you
  • 00:03:13
leave that's going to make a lasting
  • 00:03:15
impression on folks and it's going to
  • 00:03:17
help you succeed or in some cases
  • 00:03:22
fail and in those eight or 10 different
  • 00:03:25
jobs I had what I was really seeking was
  • 00:03:28
    this thing called purpose
  • 00:03:31
purpose what am I alive for what am I
  • 00:03:33
here for what am I trying to do because
  • 00:03:36
deep down we all want a sense of
  • 00:03:39
    purpose we all want
  • 00:03:42
to be fulfilled we want to belong we
  • 00:03:46
want to make a difference I genuinely
  • 00:03:49
feel that most folks out there want to
  • 00:03:51
make a difference and if you've got a
  • 00:03:54
purpose and a reason to get up and do
  • 00:03:57
your thing life is a whole lot easier
  • 00:04:00
another thing I've learned is the
  • 00:04:02
    process of achieving cannot be
  • 00:04:04
discounted I've trying to find purpose
  • 00:04:06
    in so many
  • 00:04:08
    things in so many different
  • 00:04:10
    areas
  • 00:04:12
    volunteering giving of my
  • 00:04:14
    time helping people offering
  • 00:04:19
advice and I think deep down deep down
  • 00:04:22
what I was trying to do
  • 00:04:24
    was fill something in here
  • 00:04:29
I was trying to help others because I
  • 00:04:31
heard a long time ago that if you've got
  • 00:04:34
problems help other folks solve theirs
  • 00:04:37
    and yours will seem rather
  • 00:04:40
small so I think what I did
  • 00:04:42
inadvertently was when I had challenges
  • 00:04:44
I would try to find other folks with
  • 00:04:46
challenges and help them solve theirs if
  • 00:04:48
nothing else had took my mind off my
  • 00:04:50
    challenges for a short
  • 00:04:53
time put them a little bit further away
  • 00:04:55
    if you
  • 00:04:56
will but ultimately what I was looking
  • 00:04:59
    for
  • 00:05:00
    was
  • 00:05:04
self-respect I wanted to be proud of
  • 00:05:06
myself I wanted to love myself I wanted
  • 00:05:08
to be happy with who I am so for 40
  • 00:05:13
years I've bounced from job to
  • 00:05:16
job I've given my time I've given my
  • 00:05:20
    energy I've given my
  • 00:05:22
resources when in reality what I was
  • 00:05:24
    looking for was always right
  • 00:05:27
    here it was inside me
  • 00:05:31
I just had to discover it I had to tap
  • 00:05:33
    into
  • 00:05:35
it and I had to be happy with who I
  • 00:05:40
was see I think we were all
  • 00:05:44
built to be part of the greater good see
  • 00:05:48
I genuinely believe that when you love
  • 00:05:51
yourself you can give that love to other
  • 00:05:55
people and you're not trying to look for
  • 00:05:57
something in return you're not not
  • 00:05:59
trying to get a benefit from helping
  • 00:06:01
    them solve their
  • 00:06:03
problems what you're trying to do is
  • 00:06:06
    show them
  • 00:06:07
    love and
  • 00:06:10
    kindness and help
  • 00:06:12
them find their own self-respect and
  • 00:06:15
    self
  • 00:06:16
love because as crazy as this world is
  • 00:06:19
out there right now as divided as it is
  • 00:06:21
I really believe that most of us love
  • 00:06:24
one another we care for one another and
  • 00:06:27
    we believe in one another
  • 00:06:30
I don't like the divisive nature of
  • 00:06:32
    everything
  • 00:06:34
    and I can't solve
  • 00:06:37
it but I think if we all loved ourselves
  • 00:06:40
a little bit more and turn and in turn
  • 00:06:43
    loved each
  • 00:06:46
other this world would be a much better
  • 00:06:48
place that's just my two cents anyway
  • 00:06:52
so how do you sum up 40 years in a few
  • 00:06:56
    minutes
  • 00:06:59
    watch how you spend your
  • 00:07:03
time watch how you give of
  • 00:07:07
    yourself most importantly love
  • 00:07:09
yourself because if you love yourself it
  • 00:07:12
makes it easier to love other people so
  • 00:07:14
I'd love it if you're still around to
  • 00:07:16
    hit that subscribe
  • 00:07:18
button maybe drop me a comment about how
  • 00:07:22
    you
  • 00:07:23
feel that would do me a solid and I
  • 00:07:26
greatly appreciate it if you're still
  • 00:07:27
here I greatly appreciate you I
  • 00:07:29
appreciate every single one of you
  • 00:07:30
    that's watching
  • 00:07:31
    this so thanks for sticking
  • 00:07:34
around 40 years in a few
  • 00:07:38
    minutes I cannot believe it
