what the show is about it's about
  • 00:00:42
allowing people to listen to the wisdom
  • 00:00:44
and the life lessons of others so they
  • 00:00:46

  • 00:00:47
performance whatever that might be and
  • 00:00:49
you know you have had the incredible
  • 00:00:51
pleasure to work with one of the
  • 00:00:54
greatest performers the world has ever
  • 00:00:55
seen LeBron James for 20 plus years so
  • 00:00:58
if this show is about how people can get
  • 00:01:00
the most out of themselves let me ask
  • 00:01:03
you how you have got the most out of
  • 00:01:06
    LeBron I think the
  • 00:01:09
    um it's been a marriage it's been a
  • 00:01:11
20-year marriage and our goals align our
  • 00:01:15
goals are align because we know what
  • 00:01:16
what the end result we we know what the
  • 00:01:19
end result is to be and that's just to
  • 00:01:21
be the greatest and to be a champion and
  • 00:01:23
so every day we challenge each other you
  • 00:01:26
know you need to be the best athlete you
  • 00:01:28
need to be the best basketball player I
  • 00:01:30
need to be the best athletic trainer for
  • 00:01:32
you and so every day we challenge each
  • 00:01:34
other and you know we we've we've uh you
  • 00:01:38
know we've had this 20-year marriage if
  • 00:01:39
you want to call it and because we
  • 00:01:41
challenge each other each and every day
  • 00:01:43
so do you remember the day that you had
  • 00:01:44
the conversation about what LeBron wants
  • 00:01:46
to be and the answer was the greatest of
  • 00:01:49
all time the greatest yes MH when did he
  • 00:01:51
first say that to you uh it it was
  • 00:01:53
really early on in his career it was
  • 00:01:55
probably he was 19 or 20 years old when
  • 00:01:56
we had that conversation and um I said
  • 00:01:59
okay well Let's uh you know and then
  • 00:02:01
again I was only 24 25 at the time as
  • 00:02:03
    well you know I'm only 8 years I'm I'm 8
  • 00:02:07
years older older than he is and so but
  • 00:02:09
it was my second year in the MBA so I
  • 00:02:11
was just learning as well and so I said
  • 00:02:13
okay let's do the research you know what
  • 00:02:15
others have done what has failed for
  • 00:02:17
others and so let's let's just learn
  • 00:02:19
from other people's mistakes and let's
  • 00:02:21
build let's build our own journey and
  • 00:02:22
when you say you challenge each other
  • 00:02:24
every day can you give me an insight and
  • 00:02:26
our audience an insight into what that
  • 00:02:27
actually looks like what are behaviors
  • 00:02:30
what are the conversations sure so you
  • 00:02:32
know we challenge each other each and
  • 00:02:34
every day but I say day but the
  • 00:02:36
challenge Begins the night before how
  • 00:02:38
much sleep did you get you need to be in
  • 00:02:39
bed by a certain amount by by a certain
  • 00:02:41
time in order for you to get a full 8 to
  • 00:02:44
10 hours of sleep which is ideal for
  • 00:02:46
someone who's burning all these calories
  • 00:02:47
and who's pushing themselves each and
  • 00:02:49
every day so uh every day starts with
  • 00:02:53
nighttime the night before come in sleep
  • 00:02:55
well rested well hydrated you know did
  • 00:02:57
you hydrate the night before did you
  • 00:02:58
hydrate before you came came in did you
  • 00:03:00
have a little snack before before we uh
  • 00:03:02
before we uh lift weights Etc and do our
  • 00:03:05
workouts so all those are challenging
  • 00:03:07
    yourselves and challenging your
  • 00:03:08
accountability so it's just an ongoing
  • 00:03:11
process I think you can you can follow
  • 00:03:12
our our our step now in our process it's
  • 00:03:15
not really cut and dry it's just it's
  • 00:03:18
    overlapping it's constantly overlapping
  • 00:03:20
and it's it's an entirety it's an entire
  • 00:03:22
process that just overlaps each other
  • 00:03:24
and is there ever a day where he says
  • 00:03:25
yeah I had 8 hours sleep I've had my
  • 00:03:27
nutrition I drunk my water and you're
  • 00:03:28
    thinking I don't think you're
  • 00:03:31
    telling there's there there's been a few
  • 00:03:33
days like that there been a few days but
  • 00:03:35
uh luckily he's very transparent with me
  • 00:03:37
and and and and he's he takes full
  • 00:03:39
accountability you know he'll look at me
  • 00:03:40
and say well Mike you know we had some
  • 00:03:43
some some guests over last night we you
  • 00:03:44
know we had because I think this is an
  • 00:03:45
important place to almost begin the
  • 00:03:47
conversation that even LeBron James is
  • 00:03:49
flawed the greatest people in the world
  • 00:03:51
are flawed people aren't perfect you
  • 00:03:52
know corre they slip correct yes yes yes
  • 00:03:54
you know and and it's and it's all part
  • 00:03:56
of the journey it's all part of the
  • 00:03:57
journey you know we're not robots you
  • 00:04:00
know and I'll talk about it in my book
  • 00:04:01
as well you know we're not we we're
  • 00:04:03
going to have you know days where you
  • 00:04:05
know we don't we don't hit hit a glams a
  • 00:04:07
grand slam you know so we we're going to
  • 00:04:09
have days like that so but what what
  • 00:04:12
matters and what's important is how
  • 00:04:14
quickly do you get back up how quickly
  • 00:04:15
do you do you start your process again
  • 00:04:18
uh for greatness if this is how you push
  • 00:04:20
him how does he push you uh he pushes me
  • 00:04:24
by just you know he he questions um you
  • 00:04:28
know Mike and I read something there or
  • 00:04:30
I saw this on on on on a on a on a TV
  • 00:04:32
show about training or about this or
  • 00:04:34
about that why aren't we doing that or
  • 00:04:36
do we do some of that you know so he'll
  • 00:04:38
question some of the things that he sees
  • 00:04:40
or he overhears we're always uh you know
  • 00:04:43
trying to evolve in what we're doing and
  • 00:04:45
uh educating each other and I think that
  • 00:04:47
that idea of evolution is important you
  • 00:04:49
know we had a a guest on the podcast
  • 00:04:51
Professor Brian Cox who said you need to
  • 00:04:52
think like a scientist you have to be
  • 00:04:54
proved wrong love that yes does that
  • 00:04:57
does that speak to you absolutely
  • 00:04:58
    absolutely yes because
  • 00:05:00
on once you think you you got all the
  • 00:05:01
answers and you know everything well
  • 00:05:03
then you're definitely going to fail
  • 00:05:05
because uh science is evolving training
  • 00:05:08
is evolving you know the the way uh the
  • 00:05:11
these men and women now they play the
  • 00:05:13
game of basketball that's evolving and
  • 00:05:15
so you know you really have to be uh on
  • 00:05:17
on The Cutting Edge if you will you know
  • 00:05:19
to to borrow catch rates you really have
  • 00:05:22
to be on on The Cutting Edge and do your
  • 00:05:23
research and with all of these years of
  • 00:05:26
you two pushing each other and you
  • 00:05:27
holding him to account him holding you
  • 00:05:29
to account and looking for new ways to
  • 00:05:31
evolve when you reflect what do you
  • 00:05:33
think is the is the greatest lesson that
  • 00:05:36
    you've taught
  • 00:05:37
him the greatest lesson that I have
  • 00:05:40
taught him I believe is just consistency
  • 00:05:43
you know being consistent I I I actually
  • 00:05:45
think we've taught each other that
  • 00:05:47
because again we challenge each other
  • 00:05:49
each and every day you know I'm not
  • 00:05:51
going to back down he's not going to
  • 00:05:52
back down so what what what has happened
  • 00:05:55
here is now we both become Uber
  • 00:05:57
consistent in in in our process and what
  • 00:05:59
we're doing so consistency has been I
  • 00:06:02
think the key to everything and why does
  • 00:06:03
consistency matter so much because you
  • 00:06:07
you know what you're going to get out of
  • 00:06:08
your body and and when when you're in a
  • 00:06:12
team sport in a team setting then others
  • 00:06:15
know that you're going to be there for
  • 00:06:17
them as well okay you know because if
  • 00:06:20
you're consistent with your with your
  • 00:06:21
behavior if you're consistent with your
  • 00:06:24
uh you know with your attitude with with
  • 00:06:27
    your um performance
  • 00:06:30
then there's there's no question on uh
  • 00:06:33
you know the teammates don't have to
  • 00:06:34
question what you're what you're going
  • 00:06:35
to bring to the table that particular
  • 00:06:37
day they know what you're going to get
  • 00:06:39
now I want to delve into the specifics
  • 00:06:40
that you and LeBron have worked on over
  • 00:06:41
the years but I think it's also
  • 00:06:43
important to make it clear to the
  • 00:06:44
audience that are watching this that you
  • 00:06:46
didn't just rock up when LeBron was some
  • 00:06:48
Global Mega star like this has been a
  • 00:06:51
long journey yes so you were there right
  • 00:06:53
at the very beginning is that right I
  • 00:06:55
was there when uh when the Cavaliers
  • 00:06:57
just drafted him they had just drafted
  • 00:06:59
him and I was was the summer league
  • 00:07:00
intern athletic trainer uh for for the
  • 00:07:03
Cleveland Cavaliers and you know we just
  • 00:07:04
started at at the same time um I was
  • 00:07:08
done after the summer league uh and he
  • 00:07:10
he did his his rookie year I went back
  • 00:07:12
to to University and I came back his
  • 00:07:15
second season fulltime and how did you
  • 00:07:17
end up in the NFL what was your route
  • 00:07:18
into that world it was really just a lot
  • 00:07:21
of uh interning a lot of cold calls a
  • 00:07:24
lot of just volunteer work uh it was it
  • 00:07:26
it was probably a five to six year
  • 00:07:29
Journey For Me of volunteering of of
  • 00:07:32
taking jobs at high schools of taking
  • 00:07:34
jobs at physical therapy clinics of
  • 00:07:37
working with minor league baseball you
  • 00:07:39
know U again interning with with
  • 00:07:43
    paramedics with hospitals with clinics
  • 00:07:45
and just just to try to get as much
  • 00:07:47
experience as I could in the field of
  • 00:07:49
sports medicine and so finally uh the
  • 00:07:52
Cavaliers they said okay come on and
  • 00:07:53
we'll give you a chance uh to be our
  • 00:07:55
summer league intern and um you know the
  • 00:07:58
    rest is history
  • 00:08:00
yes did you know that less than half of
  • 00:08:03
Brits eat breakfast every day of the
  • 00:08:05
week I mean that's amazing but why well
  • 00:08:07
it's cuz we're all time poor especially
  • 00:08:09
in the mornings so we compromise my fix
  • 00:08:12
    is hu's nutritionally complete high
  • 00:08:14
protein shake a complete meal in a
  • 00:08:16
bottle that slots perfectly into my life
  • 00:08:19
head to the link in the description for
  • 00:08:20
a free t-shirt on your first order with
  • 00:08:22
    hu how can you resist
  • 00:08:25
that so you must have written loads of
  • 00:08:28
letters made of loads of phone calls it
  • 00:08:30
was it was letters it was phone calls it
  • 00:08:32
was before email it it was right it was
  • 00:08:35
right before email was really popular I
  • 00:08:37
don't know I don't know how how you know
  • 00:08:38
how to use email hours and hours of
  • 00:08:40
letters letters you know like in the
  • 00:08:42
envelope you know go to go post office
  • 00:08:44
send you know put you know anyone under
  • 00:08:46
    21 is thinking what's an envelope what's
  • 00:08:47
    a letter I don't understand what this
  • 00:08:49
    guy talking
  • 00:08:51
about what kept you going in those times
  • 00:08:54
CU I think look LeBron story is amazing
  • 00:08:55
we'll talk about it but I think you know
  • 00:08:57
let's let's do do service to you your
  • 00:09:00
story as well Mike is amazing how you
  • 00:09:02
ended up in the world of of the NBA yeah
  • 00:09:04
well you know it was just um I come from
  • 00:09:07
from from a small town Brownsville Texas
  • 00:09:09
which is right on the border is right on
  • 00:09:11
the US Mexico border and so you know we
  • 00:09:13
don't have access to a lot of you know
  • 00:09:15
Big Time pro pro sporting teams Etc or
  • 00:09:17
programs and so we um I've always had
  • 00:09:22
lofty aspirations you know to to to be
  • 00:09:25
    involved in professional sports at
  • 00:09:26
whatever level you know I was I know I
  • 00:09:28
wasn't going to play cuz uh you know
  • 00:09:30
after after high school I run out of
  • 00:09:31
talent and so and so you know I said
  • 00:09:33
okay I really love uh medicine and
  • 00:09:36
biology and Anatomy physiology why don't
  • 00:09:38
I why don't I merge the two so I did
  • 00:09:40
    that I said you know I I can I can get a
  • 00:09:42
job in in sports medicine and then when
  • 00:09:45
I got to college and I was an intern I
  • 00:09:47
said well why can't I do this at the pro
  • 00:09:49
level and so right then and then I
  • 00:09:52
decided you know I'm I'm going to I'm
  • 00:09:53
going to I'm going to do this I'm I'm
  • 00:09:56
going to I'm going to become uh a sports
  • 00:09:58
medicine uh you know the athletic
  • 00:10:00
trainer for for a professional sports
  • 00:10:03
team and I'm going to do all do all the
  • 00:10:05
leg work and the ground work that that I
  • 00:10:06
need to do to get there and did you
  • 00:10:09
think that the dream of of a life in the
  • 00:10:11
NBA was never going to happen at any
  • 00:10:13
point there was a couple times where you
  • 00:10:16
    know I I was I was a little dejected I
  • 00:10:18
was a little you know turned off by uh
  • 00:10:21
by U you know some of the responses I
  • 00:10:22
was getting you know even some of the
  • 00:10:24
people RH like oh you know maybe it's
  • 00:10:26
just not meant for you but all that did
  • 00:10:28
was really fuel me I said what no you
  • 00:10:31
know it is for me okay and you're not
  • 00:10:33
going to tell me that it's not for me so
  • 00:10:35
you know that that only fueled me more
  • 00:10:37
once I heard comments like that that you
  • 00:10:39
know maybe this isn't for you yeah or
  • 00:10:41
you know or you know maybe a small town
  • 00:10:42
kid can't can't really get it done so
  • 00:10:44
what is high performance then high
  • 00:10:46
performance to me is is is is something
  • 00:10:50
special to me a high performance is the
  • 00:10:52
end result of a journey is the sum of
  • 00:10:54
all these parts so so high high
  • 00:10:57
performance comes from doing all the
  • 00:10:59
necessary work all the grunt work all of
  • 00:11:01
the sacrificing and all the discipline
  • 00:11:03
and accountability it takes to get there
  • 00:11:05
and then and once once you master all
  • 00:11:07
that and go and go through the process
  • 00:11:10
then then you can achieve high high
  • 00:11:11
performance so let's talk then about
  • 00:11:13
your journey with LeBron um uh there's a
  • 00:11:16
lovely line in your book where you say I
  • 00:11:18
could see he was a blank canvas with
  • 00:11:20
    literally every paint color
  • 00:11:23
available so tell us about the day that
  • 00:11:25
you met LeBron James so we we when
  • 00:11:29
initially met in Orlando Florida you
  • 00:11:31
know I feela went to do the uh the NBA
  • 00:11:33
Summer League for the Cavaliers LeBron
  • 00:11:35
had just been drafted and we come in and
  • 00:11:38
to be honest guys I I I never knew who
  • 00:11:41
LeBron was until until right before I
  • 00:11:43
went to Summer League you know and a
  • 00:11:45
buddy of mine who follows you know the
  • 00:11:46
NBA kosi is oh you're going to work with
  • 00:11:49
the LeBron James I said oh the high
  • 00:11:51
school kid I said yeah yeah I think so
  • 00:11:53
and so uh you know all I knew he was
  • 00:11:55
this famous high school kid who was
  • 00:11:56
really really good and we were going to
  • 00:11:58
draft him I said okay cool you know I
  • 00:12:00
was just happy to be in the NBA and so I
  • 00:12:02
said okay if I meet him great if if not
  • 00:12:05
you know I just want to do a really
  • 00:12:06
really good job for the team and so we
  • 00:12:08
met and just he walked in the hotel room
  • 00:12:13
uh to do a little little treatment and
  • 00:12:14
therapy and he was I I was kind of taken
  • 00:12:18
back by him because he was he was for an
  • 00:12:20
18 19 year old kid he this huge kid and
  • 00:12:23
you know there's there's a lot of tall
  • 00:12:25
kids and you know tall guys that come
  • 00:12:26
into the NBA obviously but this guy was
  • 00:12:28
just massive just and well proportioned
  • 00:12:31
just shoulders his back and his his legs
  • 00:12:34
just really really proportional he walks
  • 00:12:35
in the door and I oh this guy's special
  • 00:12:38
this guy's pretty special oh this is
  • 00:12:40
this is the high school kid you know so
  • 00:12:42
okay you know here he is and uh you know
  • 00:12:45
just just very very business-like you
  • 00:12:47
know at 18 19 years old he was very very
  • 00:12:49
business-like and just he would talk
  • 00:12:51
about you know my body feels this right
  • 00:12:54
I think I need to do this tonight okay
  • 00:12:56
you know to to to help me get right uh
  • 00:12:58
but low lowkey you know just kind of
  • 00:13:01
very very professional so that that that
  • 00:13:03
was the very very first time that that
  • 00:13:05
that we met so physically he had
  • 00:13:07
everything oh yeah yeah yeah yeah he was
  • 00:13:09
he was just amazing what about mentally
  • 00:13:11
mentally um I I think he was getting
  • 00:13:15
there he was getting there you know he
  • 00:13:16
was still 18 19 years old like I said so
  • 00:13:18
he was still getting there he wasn't
  • 00:13:20
obviously you know the um you know the
  • 00:13:22
professional he is now or the
  • 00:13:23
professional he was 10 years ago you
  • 00:13:25
know he was still a kid you know in in
  • 00:13:27
in a man's world and trying to figure F
  • 00:13:29
this out and so you two what do you
  • 00:13:30
click straight away we clicked I believe
  • 00:13:33
we clicked uh when I was when I when I
  • 00:13:36
got on the Cavaliers full-time during
  • 00:13:38
training camp is when I was doing some
  • 00:13:40
stretches and some Mobility work with
  • 00:13:42
some of the veterans on on the team and
  • 00:13:44
I can see him kind of looking and said
  • 00:13:46
hey you know he didn't know my name he
  • 00:13:48
said hey man you know show show me that
  • 00:13:50
exercise or what does that do what is
  • 00:13:52
that for very very inquisitive early on
  • 00:13:55
and so you know so we started to
  • 00:13:57
gravitate to toward each other and he
  • 00:13:59
said well how can we do this well you
  • 00:14:01
know this is for your back this is for
  • 00:14:02
your hips with you know which which in
  • 00:14:04
turn will help your legs and your ankle
  • 00:14:06
etc etc you know whatever the case may
  • 00:14:08
be he said okay okay I kind of like that
  • 00:14:10
stuff all right cool and then then we go
  • 00:14:12
off and practice and then every before
  • 00:14:14
every practice it started to like hey
  • 00:14:16
man you know let me get let me get that
  • 00:14:18
stretch you know hey man let's try that
  • 00:14:20
exercise and it was always hey man hey
  • 00:14:23
man and so finally he says uh it's Mike
  • 00:14:25
right say yeah Mike all right cool all
  • 00:14:27
right Mike let's do this let's do this
  • 00:14:28
and then finally the night before our
  • 00:14:31
home opener I think it was Halloween
  • 00:14:33
2007 I believe he said uh what are you
  • 00:14:36
doing tonight that's nothing he goes
  • 00:14:38
well why don't you come to the house and
  • 00:14:40
we'll do some of these exercises uh at
  • 00:14:43
the house because I like the way I feel
  • 00:14:45
it's okay cool in preparation for the
  • 00:14:47
next day so his body his mind was
  • 00:14:49
already thinking yeah you know I need to
  • 00:14:51
do the extra work in order in order to
  • 00:14:54
to to get to where I want to be you know
  • 00:14:56
I need to do the extra work at night
  • 00:14:58
time a nighttime rout or something to
  • 00:15:00
kind of get me give me that edge and so
  • 00:15:02
I drove over to the over to the house
  • 00:15:04
and I think it was Halloween night like
  • 00:15:06
I said and uh you know he open the door
  • 00:15:08
he was dressed as Batman was he yeah he
  • 00:15:11
so this giant Batman you know opening
  • 00:15:13
the door Edge so uh and then you know he
  • 00:15:17
changes and we start doing all the
  • 00:15:18
stretches and stuff uh in front of about
  • 00:15:20
20 people at the house and they're W you
  • 00:15:23
know they're all looking at me with
  • 00:15:24
these eyes hey you know don't mess them
  • 00:15:25
up kid you know you know that's that's
  • 00:15:27
our guy you know but you know make sure
  • 00:15:29
you make sure you don't hurt him and so
  • 00:15:31
but that that became the routine the
  • 00:15:33
night before every game I would drive
  • 00:15:34
down to akan Ohio uh to his home and we
  • 00:15:37
do our exercises our stretching any
  • 00:15:40
icing or any little therapy if he has a
  • 00:15:42
little injury then we do that and then
  • 00:15:44
he hey want to stay for dinner and we
  • 00:15:46
would talk over dinner and that's when
  • 00:15:47
bronnie James was in a in in a high
  • 00:15:50
chair he was spoon feeding them now now
  • 00:15:51
he's in the NBA you know so it's been
  • 00:15:55
quite a journey but that that's been uh
  • 00:15:57
I remember those times were very very
  • 00:15:59
special yeah and I think you can read so
  • 00:16:00
much into the the mindset of of a young
  • 00:16:02
player that wanted to do that how many
  • 00:16:04
other players were asking you to go over
  • 00:16:06
the night before matches to the house
  • 00:16:07
and do all these extras with them oh I
  • 00:16:09
mean you know now you know that that the
  • 00:16:11
more and more the of these stories are
  • 00:16:12
out there you know you might get a
  • 00:16:14
handful now but then but well but then
  • 00:16:16
it was it was you know
  • 00:16:19
it was really unheard of there's a great
  • 00:16:22
line in your book game plan where you
  • 00:16:24
say mind first grind later correct tell
  • 00:16:28
us what that correct so you know I I
  • 00:16:31
believe when when when we heard we were
  • 00:16:33
talking about uh you know LeBron's
  • 00:16:34
LeBron and mik writing a book and and
  • 00:16:36
co-authoring a book together Etc you
  • 00:16:38
know everybody wanted oh what's the
  • 00:16:39
secret sauce what what are LeBron's
  • 00:16:41
workouts and what are all these things
  • 00:16:43
well we'll get to that later but before
  • 00:16:46
you before you you know you go through
  • 00:16:48
and become a high performer and to have
  • 00:16:50
high performance it starts with the mind
  • 00:16:53
all right so you need to have the mental
  • 00:16:54
War withal and the mental discipline to
  • 00:16:58
to do to do all the sacrificing and to
  • 00:17:01
do all the little all the little tidbits
  • 00:17:03
that uh that it takes to become great so
  • 00:17:06
you know we we we don't want to start
  • 00:17:07
with exercise we want to start with the
  • 00:17:08
mind and and and what what is the right
  • 00:17:11
mindset for greatness so for people that
  • 00:17:14
want to achieve greatness what is the
  • 00:17:16
right mindset how do we begin having
  • 00:17:17
that conversation number one you begin
  • 00:17:19
with a self assessment okay you're
  • 00:17:21
different I'm different LeBron James is
  • 00:17:23
    different Michael Jordan is different
  • 00:17:24
everybody's different so what is high
  • 00:17:26
performance for you you know so the
  • 00:17:29
    first thing you do
  • 00:17:30
is you know a SWAT analysis for yourself
  • 00:17:34
you know what are my strength weaknesses
  • 00:17:35
where do I want to be that that that's
  • 00:17:37
number one what what is high performance
  • 00:17:39
mean to me what is my goal why did I
  • 00:17:41
pick up this book all right why do I
  • 00:17:43
want to be we better so figure that part
  • 00:17:45
out first then then we could then we
  • 00:17:47
could dive in uh to okay all right start
  • 00:17:50
do by doing this eliminate this add this
  • 00:17:52
etc etc so a needs analysis is is is
  • 00:17:56
vital before before we do anything else
  • 00:17:57
and when you first had the anal with
  • 00:17:59
LeBron what what was the answer that the
  • 00:18:00
two of you came up with uh it it was it
  • 00:18:03
was uh number one he he wanted to be the
  • 00:18:06
greatest that that that was the you know
  • 00:18:09
that's that's the goal is to be the
  • 00:18:11
greatest ever and so okay well we we
  • 00:18:14
both know that that's going to take a
  • 00:18:15
ton of sacrifice commitment and you have
  • 00:18:17
to be able to play this game for a long
  • 00:18:20
period of time you know because I we
  • 00:18:22
both believe that greatness is measured
  • 00:18:24
by you know a handful of years greatness
  • 00:18:27
is you know can you sustain greatness
  • 00:18:29
and and that that that's for us that's
  • 00:18:30
the definition of of being great you
  • 00:18:32
know how long can you sustain this
  • 00:18:34
because it's not it's not always fun
  • 00:18:35
it's not always sexy you know it's uh it
  • 00:18:38
is a grind so if the first thing that we
  • 00:18:40
do is think about where we want to be
  • 00:18:42
what is the dream for us what's next
  • 00:18:45
because for 99.9% of people who are
  • 00:18:47
enjoying this conversation the answer is
  • 00:18:49
not going to be to be the greatest NBA
  • 00:18:51
player the world's ever seen it's going
  • 00:18:52
to be something very different yeah so
  • 00:18:53
what's the next what's the next step
  • 00:18:55
after doing that kind of self assessment
  • 00:18:57
if you like okay so uh the first step
  • 00:19:00
where do I want to be like we just
  • 00:19:01
talked about okay now where am I now you
  • 00:19:04
know what where what what am I now and
  • 00:19:06
what what is stopping me from from from
  • 00:19:08
getting there you know what what what
  • 00:19:10
steps am I what steps are hindering my
  • 00:19:13
my my process you know that that are
  • 00:19:15
getting in the way of you know for me to
  • 00:19:17
get to to get there and so you know you
  • 00:19:20
have to do uh you know you have to be
  • 00:19:22
real with yourself which I talk about in
  • 00:19:24
the book and just look at yourself in
  • 00:19:25
the mirror and say okay I I should be
  • 00:19:27
doing this I should be adding this I
  • 00:19:28
should omit this cuz you know the way
  • 00:19:31
that I that I eat the way the way that I
  • 00:19:33
move you know am I exercising and am I
  • 00:19:35
doing the right things am I networking
  • 00:19:37
the right way you know in business to
  • 00:19:39
get me you know that to to be CEO of my
  • 00:19:41
own company you know to etc etc and why
  • 00:19:44
is it so important to make sure that
  • 00:19:45
you're real with yourself well be
  • 00:19:48
because again we talked about sustain uh
  • 00:19:50
longevity and so you know a flash in a
  • 00:19:54
pan you know everyone can have a quick
  • 00:19:56
uh a great weekend and and close the
  • 00:19:58
deal but can you close multiple deals
  • 00:20:00
for a long period of time and so you're
  • 00:20:03
if you're not real with yourself then
  • 00:20:05
then you're your your success will be
  • 00:20:08
shortlived and when you looked at LeBron
  • 00:20:10
all those years ago and you'd made the
  • 00:20:11
plan you not be the greatest ever right
  • 00:20:14
where are you not delivering what
  • 00:20:15
answers did you come up with then I I
  • 00:20:17
believe with um we talked about what are
  • 00:20:20
we doing each and every day all right
  • 00:20:22
are are you are and how much are you
  • 00:20:24
actually taking care of your body what
  • 00:20:26
are you eating and so you know
  • 00:20:29
back then 1819 you know it was he would
  • 00:20:31
pick up uh you know fast food and and go
  • 00:20:34
to the arena eat eat some fast food in
  • 00:20:36
the locker room and then go out there
  • 00:20:37
and and score 20 30 points but you know
  • 00:20:40
but that was great back then and then
  • 00:20:42
but now now you know you can't you can't
  • 00:20:45
you can't get get get away with the with
  • 00:20:47
doing stuff like that anymore you know
  • 00:20:49
that was great when you're 1920 but in
  • 00:20:51
order to sustain a high performance that
  • 00:20:53
you you you're just going to be shooting
  • 00:20:55
yourself in the foot if you keep doing
  • 00:20:56
that okay so you've made the self
  • 00:20:59
assessment you've looked at where you're
  • 00:21:01
not quite delivering yes and you've
  • 00:21:03
worked out those areas to improve what's
  • 00:21:05
the next step after that the next step
  • 00:21:07
is and this is this is one that that
  • 00:21:08
gets a lot of folks is share your idea
  • 00:21:13
all right tell share your idea because
  • 00:21:16
um I believe and we believe and and the
  • 00:21:18
the proof is there that a group of
  • 00:21:20
people working to to accomplish a goal
  • 00:21:23
is much way more effective than just an
  • 00:21:25
individual trying to do by him or
  • 00:21:27
herself and so you want to share your
  • 00:21:29
idea share your plan talk to someone
  • 00:21:31
either a spouse a parent or a really
  • 00:21:34
really close friend that's going to help
  • 00:21:36
you to get there that's going to make
  • 00:21:38
you accountable we talked about earlier
  • 00:21:40
about LeBron and I challenging each
  • 00:21:41
other each and every day well it's easy
  • 00:21:44
because we're challenging each other you
  • 00:21:46
know to to be to to be the the best to
  • 00:21:48
be to be the greatest each and every day
  • 00:21:50
and so if you have someone along with
  • 00:21:51
you for the journey it's going to be a
  • 00:21:53
lot easier and you who else did you tell
  • 00:21:56
that this was your plan like did you go
  • 00:21:58
    to the
  • 00:21:59
head coach of the Cavaliers at the time
  • 00:22:00
and say listen this guy wants to be the
  • 00:22:02
greatest NBA player of the world's ever
  • 00:22:03
seen you need to help us get there or
  • 00:22:05
yeah yeah yeah no you know it initially
  • 00:22:07
it was just he and I initially it was he
  • 00:22:09
and I you know I'm sure he he you know
  • 00:22:11
maybe he spoke to his mother or or spoke
  • 00:22:14
to to his spouse but um it was really
  • 00:22:17
just just just he and I early on and
  • 00:22:20
people around us didn't quite get you
  • 00:22:22
know why are these guys here you know
  • 00:22:23
four hours before the game you know why
  • 00:22:26
are these guys why is Mike driving to
  • 00:22:27
his house the night before a game
  • 00:22:29
you know what is that really doing for
  • 00:22:30
him you know why is he doing all these
  • 00:22:32
actual lifts why is he doing all what is
  • 00:22:34
that so a lot of people didn't
  • 00:22:35
understand what he and I were working on
  • 00:22:38
    we're working on a project and a
  • 00:22:39
long-term project and when we still are
  • 00:22:41
    you know 20 21 years 22 years later it's
  • 00:22:44
a great quote from Mark Weber the former
  • 00:22:45
Formula 1 driver I know you're into your
  • 00:22:47
Formula One yeah he said to us once on
  • 00:22:49
high performance average is easy that's
  • 00:22:51
why it's popular I love it absolutely
  • 00:22:54
but what's really interesting is you
  • 00:22:55
weren't doing the average there you
  • 00:22:57
weren't doing what was popular you were
  • 00:22:58
kind of outliers at this point oh yeah
  • 00:23:00
yeah at that particular time you know we
  • 00:23:02
were doing stuff that not a lot of folks
  • 00:23:04
were were were doing you know and and so
  • 00:23:07
it was extra time in the gym it was
  • 00:23:08
extra time in the weight room extra time
  • 00:23:09
in the in the at his home doing U you
  • 00:23:12
know therapy exercises you know crowd
  • 00:23:14
therapy Etc and also researching you
  • 00:23:17
know what what is this new modality
  • 00:23:19
about you know what are they doing in
  • 00:23:20
Europe you know what are they doing in U
  • 00:23:23
in in in football in rugby you know how
  • 00:23:25
can we how can we get some some of these
  • 00:23:27
ideas to help benefit us in what you
  • 00:23:30
know what we're trying to achieve and I
  • 00:23:32
understand why you would read a lot
  • 00:23:33
research a lot look at the latest um
  • 00:23:36
studies that are coming out of the world
  • 00:23:38
of you know biomechanics and Physiology
  • 00:23:41
and things was LeBron doing the same
  • 00:23:44
LeBron was doing the same from a
  • 00:23:45
basketball perspective and and from a
  • 00:23:47
business perspective you know he uh um
  • 00:23:49
if we're just talking about performance
  • 00:23:51
    in in
  • 00:23:52
    basketball I I I I can't you know
  • 00:23:55
promise you but I can I I can assure you
  • 00:23:58
that there's no one that has seen more
  • 00:24:01
tape or that that that studies uh more
  • 00:24:04
basketball games than than LeBron he
  • 00:24:06
    he's really is a
  • 00:24:08
    basketball Savant he's a basketball
  • 00:24:10
encyclopedia because he he he knows the
  • 00:24:13
offensive uh schemes he knows the
  • 00:24:15
defensive schemes of other teams of
  • 00:24:16
other players tendencies of other teams
  • 00:24:19
of other players of other coaches you
  • 00:24:22
know he will study he just he has done
  • 00:24:24
his homework for years now and he
  • 00:24:26
studies you know different tactics from
  • 00:24:29
not only players but from coaches as
  • 00:24:31
well would you would you tell us a story
  • 00:24:32
about the maybe the first time or one of
  • 00:24:34
the Early times you realized the the
  • 00:24:36
length that he's going to to understand
  • 00:24:38
the game of basketball and most
  • 00:24:39
    importantly understand his opponents
  • 00:24:41
understand other coaches yeah well I
  • 00:24:42
mean I would I would be at the house and
  • 00:24:45
uh you know I would show up maybe half
  • 00:24:46
hour early before our before our
  • 00:24:47
treatment time and uh you know someone
  • 00:24:50
would open the door and you know where's
  • 00:24:52
he at oh he's he's in his office uh I
  • 00:24:54
don't know what he's doing so open the
  • 00:24:56
door knock and he's watching film he's
  • 00:24:58
watching film he's got his son with him
  • 00:25:00
uh he's got Bry Jr but he's you know
  • 00:25:02
he's tending to him but he's watching a
  • 00:25:04
game out on the west coast somewhere you
  • 00:25:06
know like uh I don't know the Lakers are
  • 00:25:09
playing the you know Utah Jazz or
  • 00:25:11
something just a random game that night
  • 00:25:13
but he's studying it he's watching
  • 00:25:15
because because we're playing Utah you
  • 00:25:17
know in three nights so he's already
  • 00:25:18
scouting he's already doing his homework
  • 00:25:21
uh another thing is you know we'll be
  • 00:25:23
doing we'll be doing therapy and
  • 00:25:25
treatment I got him on the treatment
  • 00:25:26
table table and he's watching games on
  • 00:25:29
his iPad you know he's he's watching
  • 00:25:30
games because uh you know we have a game
  • 00:25:33
in again in two three days so he was
  • 00:25:34
doing that 20 years ago he's still doing
  • 00:25:37
that now so nothing has changed so it's
  • 00:25:41
he's still prepping man yeah and and how
  • 00:25:44
I suppose what I'd be wondering if I was
  • 00:25:46
him and you like is what we're doing the
  • 00:25:48
right thing and I think often that
  • 00:25:50
derails a lot of people because it takes
  • 00:25:51
time for the evidence to become clear
  • 00:25:54
yes so how did you know that the extra
  • 00:25:56
work you were doing was going to pay off
  • 00:25:57
you know how did LeBron know that
  • 00:25:59
watching all these games or doing these
  • 00:26:00
extra sessions with you the night before
  • 00:26:02
was actually going to make a difference
  • 00:26:03
yeah yeah you know it it initially it
  • 00:26:06
was a little trial trial and error you
  • 00:26:08
know like like like like most things in
  • 00:26:10
its uh in their infancy are so it it was
  • 00:26:12
a lot of trial and error early on but at
  • 00:26:15
the end of the day you know it could
  • 00:26:17
only make you better if you do if you do
  • 00:26:19
if you do if you sacrifice if you add
  • 00:26:21
things that that'll make you feel better
  • 00:26:23
that that are healthier for you at the
  • 00:26:25
end of the day you're just going to get
  • 00:26:26
more positive results and so with him it
  • 00:26:28
was yeah it's trial and error but it's
  • 00:26:31
you know what um mentally it's an
  • 00:26:34
    advantage already over your opponent
  • 00:26:36
because you come to the game way more
  • 00:26:38
prepared than than than uh than your
  • 00:26:40
opponent because you know you've been
  • 00:26:41
doing stuff the night before to prep you
  • 00:26:43
for tonight so how much of LeBron's
  • 00:26:46
success do you think is raw talent and
  • 00:26:49
how much do you think it's down to this
  • 00:26:50
work ethic I believe it's gosh if I had
  • 00:26:54
to put a number on it I'd
  • 00:26:56
say 65% of it is just raw talent but but
  • 00:27:00
the other percentage is just how much he
  • 00:27:03
dedicates himself to his craft Yeah man
  • 00:27:06
so inspiring though for the two of you
  • 00:27:08
to keep on lifting each other up all the
  • 00:27:09
time and be this kind of oh yeah I
  • 00:27:11
almost look at it as like a cool little
  • 00:27:12
gang that no one else knows you're in
  • 00:27:13
where you've got this plan to be the
  • 00:27:14
greatest in the world and you're doing
  • 00:27:16
all of this what was secret work it's
  • 00:27:18
not so secret now cuz you're telling us
  • 00:27:19
about it but it must have been such an
  • 00:27:21
exciting time to try and build this guy
  • 00:27:24
it's uh you know like I like I mentioned
  • 00:27:26
the book it was it was this blank canas
  • 00:27:28
and and uh for him to to acknowledge you
  • 00:27:30
know what I want to be the greatest and
  • 00:27:32
um you know K you know can can we go on
  • 00:27:35
on the journey together let's go and so
  • 00:27:38
it was uh it's funny we we we we didn't
  • 00:27:41
celebrate too much you know some of the
  • 00:27:43
big accomplishments he because for us it
  • 00:27:45
was just part of the journey it's part
  • 00:27:47
of where we want to be so it's not like
  • 00:27:49
we we you know we're MVP one year and
  • 00:27:52
went out and had this huge party it was
  • 00:27:54
just okay this is part of where you want
  • 00:27:56
to be even even now you know 20 years 20
  • 00:27:58
    years in he's he's he's the longer he's
  • 00:28:01
done it he's you know every every other
  • 00:28:02
game like he's breaking a record you
  • 00:28:04
know at most points or most this or most
  • 00:28:06
most games played or most minutes and or
  • 00:28:08
this and that or the oldest to be this
  • 00:28:10
or you know he was the youngest to
  • 00:28:11
achieve things now he's the oldest to
  • 00:28:12
achieve things and so every other game
  • 00:28:15
    you know we're we're um they're
  • 00:28:16
acknowledging him but it does not it
  • 00:28:19
doesn't change his um his his
  • 00:28:21
preparation or or or My preparation or
  • 00:28:23
our mentality we we had a conversation a
  • 00:28:25
few weeks ago um it was it was a little
  • 00:28:28
before the Olympics and he had just won
  • 00:28:30
this great award or or what have you and
  • 00:28:33
he said you know I really don't even
  • 00:28:35
think about it anymore because it's part
  • 00:28:37
it's still part of the journey you know
  • 00:28:39
maybe one day after I'm done I'll go
  • 00:28:41
back and say oh yeah I did that oh yeah
  • 00:28:43
I did that but right now it's not really
  • 00:28:46
it's not really phasing him right now so
  • 00:28:48
when he won his first title right yeah
  • 00:28:51
    that wasn't I've achieved everything I
  • 00:28:52
wanted to achieve um it it was for for a
  • 00:28:55
brief second it was for for that for
  • 00:28:57
that you know yeah we did celebrate but
  • 00:29:00
but then it became well I got to do this
  • 00:29:02
again if I want to be considered the
  • 00:29:04
greatest I got to do this multiple times
  • 00:29:07
you know it can just be like I said you
  • 00:29:08
know you know I'll win it once and then
  • 00:29:11
you know right off the sunset and I've
  • 00:29:12
done it yeah I've had a hell of a hell
  • 00:29:14
of a career no this is I need to be
  • 00:29:16
doing this more often now you know in
  • 00:29:19
order for me to be in those
  • 00:29:20
conversations you know as the greatest
  • 00:29:21
ever doing and we're having this
  • 00:29:23
conversation just a few days after the
  • 00:29:25
Olympics has happened in yes in Paris
  • 00:29:27
I'd love an into what LeBron james'
  • 00:29:29
mindset is like at an Olympic Games at
  • 00:29:32
this stage because there's part of me
  • 00:29:34
    that thinks well he's achieved
  • 00:29:35
everything there is to achieve in the
  • 00:29:36
game surely he just goes to France and
  • 00:29:37
looks to enjoy himself now no well uh
  • 00:29:41
initially that that was kind of the the
  • 00:29:43
thinking you know we we had a meeting
  • 00:29:45
during during the season and he says you
  • 00:29:47
know what Mike I'm not gonna I'm not
  • 00:29:49
going to be doing much I'm I'm not going
  • 00:29:50
to be playing much you know I'm gonna
  • 00:29:51
let some of the young guys you know get
  • 00:29:53
get get some more experience stuff and I
  • 00:29:55
said okay well me knowing you
  • 00:29:58
we'll we'll we'll see if that if that if
  • 00:30:00
that holds true uh cuz I knew you know
  • 00:30:02
once once uh you know the game started
  • 00:30:05
that that was not going to be the case
  • 00:30:06
and so sure enough you know he wanted to
  • 00:30:08
set the tone early his he had a mind
  • 00:30:10
shift change and you say you know what
  • 00:30:12
he he he took inventory of the team
  • 00:30:15
around him and uh how much experience
  • 00:30:17
they had you know in in in um with feeba
  • 00:30:20
Etc and so he said well I still have to
  • 00:30:23
set the tone until from day one we were
  • 00:30:25
in Las Vegas having training camp and he
  • 00:30:27
was was first one in the weight room
  • 00:30:30
first guy up you know at you know 7:30
  • 00:30:32
in the morning he's out there lifting
  • 00:30:33
weights in the hotel and um first one to
  • 00:30:37
breakfast first one to uh you know for
  • 00:30:39
for therapy for stretching Etc and then
  • 00:30:42
first one in the layup line in the
  • 00:30:43
warm-up line and just setting the tone
  • 00:30:46
early and I said okay this guy's not
  • 00:30:47
here just to hang out you know this
  • 00:30:49
guy's going to be you know a true leader
  • 00:30:52
and so and he end he end up being the
  • 00:30:54
most valuable player for for for all of
  • 00:30:57
uh the you know the Olympic basketball
  • 00:31:00
games I'm going to tell you a secret
  • 00:31:03
that I've noticed about high performers
  • 00:31:05
they are laser focused on the power of
  • 00:31:08
the gut you heard me right the gut
  • 00:31:10
because the gut and overall health are
  • 00:31:12
intrinsically linked and that's why so
  • 00:31:14
many high performers take a probiotic
  • 00:31:16
and one which keeps on being discussed
  • 00:31:18
is this biotic by Heights I've been
  • 00:31:21
taking it for over a year now and it is
  • 00:31:23
so good it's one of only three products
  • 00:31:25
    in Europe that's informed Sports
  • 00:31:27
certified that means it's taken by
  • 00:31:28
    Olympians Premier League footballers
  • 00:31:30
    Guinness world record holders
  • 00:31:32
    International Rugby players quite simply
  • 00:31:34
this is gut health for Champions so
  • 00:31:36

  • 00:31:52
the difference that Heights could make
  • 00:31:54
    to your
  • 00:31:56
health and how much does he pass on what
  • 00:31:58
he's learned to those younger players
  • 00:32:00
how much is he coaching them discussing
  • 00:32:01
with them explaining to them what he's
  • 00:32:02
doing and why he's doing it um I believe
  • 00:32:04
he's always been an open book yeah to
  • 00:32:07
those who seek his advice okay so he's
  • 00:32:09
not he's not just standing there and
  • 00:32:11
dishing it out to the group no no no no
  • 00:32:13
    he'll he'll he's definitely open book
  • 00:32:15
but you have to you have to be
  • 00:32:17
accountable you have to take um
  • 00:32:19
ownership in your own process to go up
  • 00:32:22
to him and talk to him track up a
  • 00:32:24
conversation if he's lifting weights at
  • 00:32:25
7:00 a.m. well you need to be there at
  • 00:32:28
6:45 as well you know to meet him and
  • 00:32:30
say you know whether it irritates him or
  • 00:32:33
not you know hey LeBron I want to go
  • 00:32:34
lift with you I want to go work out with
  • 00:32:35
you I'll be there at 6:45 you know
  • 00:32:37
whatever but sometimes we get that
  • 00:32:39
sometimes we don't I love that though
  • 00:32:40
because I think that I you know I spend
  • 00:32:42
a lot of time giving advice to people
  • 00:32:43
that tell me they want to work in the TV
  • 00:32:46
industry right yeah or they want to be a
  • 00:32:48
set up a podcast or be a broadcaster or
  • 00:32:50
something yeah and then very quickly you
  • 00:32:53
give them a bit of advice or you share
  • 00:32:54
one or two things with them and then you
  • 00:32:55
see the behavior doesn't change they
  • 00:32:57
don't come for any more there's and you
  • 00:32:59
kind of think God kind of a waste of
  • 00:33:01
that meeting that nothing happened and I
  • 00:33:04
can understand how LeBron would be
  • 00:33:05
almost looking to them to say well if
  • 00:33:07
you want this you can have this but
  • 00:33:08
absolutely you have to show me that you
  • 00:33:10
want this is that fair yeah absolutely
  • 00:33:12
yeah you then you hit the nail on the
  • 00:33:14
head it was if that individual doesn't
  • 00:33:16
take ownership in the process like he
  • 00:33:18
did when he was 19 then you know good
  • 00:33:22
luck to you I'm sure you'll have a great
  • 00:33:23
career but you know you know when I knew
  • 00:33:26
we were having this conversation was
  • 00:33:28
thinking of a bit of footage I watched
  • 00:33:30
quite a few years ago of LeBron and he
  • 00:33:31
was walking off a court and I don't know
  • 00:33:34
enough to tell you the the game or the
  • 00:33:35
court or where he was but it was a fan
  • 00:33:38
filming on their phone and they just
  • 00:33:39
said LeBron how do you keep doing it and
  • 00:33:42
    he just went
  • 00:33:43
intention and carried on walking and I
  • 00:33:46
    remember thinking I don't really
  • 00:33:47
understand quite what he is saying there
  • 00:33:49
yeah I'd love you to explain that well
  • 00:33:51
that that that uh that that intention
  • 00:33:53
started again when he was when it was 19
  • 00:33:56
    20 years old being
  • 00:33:58
I want to be the greatest and so I know
  • 00:34:02
that I have to sacrifice each and every
  • 00:34:04
day and so you know the fan asked him
  • 00:34:06
you know how how do you keep doing it
  • 00:34:08
how you keep doing it well because that
  • 00:34:11
that's my intention is to be the
  • 00:34:12
greatest and so every day I know I have
  • 00:34:15
to sacrifice every day I know I have to
  • 00:34:17
do things that that aren't comfortable
  • 00:34:20
that that aren't always fun and exciting
  • 00:34:22
and do do the things that that most
  • 00:34:24
people aren't doing so intention then is
  • 00:34:27
quite quite powerful because it informs
  • 00:34:28
every every Behavior I believe so yes
  • 00:34:32
yeah and how do we all get to a point
  • 00:34:34
where we can live with intention what
  • 00:34:35
questions should we be asking ourselves
  • 00:34:37
how should we be operating if we want to
  • 00:34:39
if we want to have this intentional
  • 00:34:41
lifestyle how does it feel what do we do
  • 00:34:43
well you really again you just have to
  • 00:34:45
take take ownership in in in your
  • 00:34:47
decision-making and and be okay with not
  • 00:34:51
being the most popular be okay with not
  • 00:34:53
with not being being a little separate
  • 00:34:56
    and being um
  • 00:34:58
not not a recluse but uh you know being
  • 00:35:00
being away from the group you know
  • 00:35:02
because uh the sacrific that that you
  • 00:35:04
have to do you know aren't always
  • 00:35:06
    popular the decisions aren't always
  • 00:35:08
popular within within a group and so you
  • 00:35:10
have to be okay with just setting your
  • 00:35:12
own path by yourself could you explain
  • 00:35:14
to us or share with us a time when a
  • 00:35:16
decision that you and LeBron have come
  • 00:35:18
to isn't popular with the group and
  • 00:35:19
you've had to just stick to your guns to
  • 00:35:21
    get it
  • 00:35:24
through I believe leaving Cleveland for
  • 00:35:27
the first time time that that that was
  • 00:35:30
as you know as the world knows now you
  • 00:35:31
know that was very was a very unpopular
  • 00:35:33
thing to do but it's something that he
  • 00:35:35
needed to do for himself was for and for
  • 00:35:37
his journey because he needed to
  • 00:35:39
challenge himself get away from home if
  • 00:35:41
you will uh compared to to to to a young
  • 00:35:45
man or a young girl leaving leaving
  • 00:35:47
school to go to college you know they go
  • 00:35:49
to college for four years you know to
  • 00:35:51
grow up you know to gain accountability
  • 00:35:53
to to to kind of be self-sustainable for
  • 00:35:55
a minute uh and and and see you mature
  • 00:35:57
and see you grow up so for for him he
  • 00:36:00
needed to leave home you know he got
  • 00:36:02
drafted you know from with the Cavaliers
  • 00:36:04
and he grew up you know 45 minutes away
  • 00:36:06
from the city so you know he never
  • 00:36:07
really left home and so this was that
  • 00:36:09
experience for him to grow up and when
  • 00:36:11
was the first time you had a
  • 00:36:12
conversation with him where he was
  • 00:36:13
thinking maybe I need something new in
  • 00:36:15
my life it was probably a couple weeks
  • 00:36:17
before he made the decision so that was
  • 00:36:20
quick yeah you know it was um I think he
  • 00:36:23
he was thinking about it you know you
  • 00:36:26
know throughout the season is weighing
  • 00:36:28
weighing all his options talking talking
  • 00:36:30
to his you know his his close friends
  • 00:36:32
close family um but uh when he and I
  • 00:36:35
first had first had the conversation of
  • 00:36:37
hey you know what I I could be leaving
  • 00:36:40
here you know and I I may need that uh
  • 00:36:43
it was probably about a week a week or
  • 00:36:47
two before the actual decision was made
  • 00:36:48
and what does he look for from you in
  • 00:36:50
that situation when he's trying to come
  • 00:36:52
to a decision what are the questions he
  • 00:36:53
asks you uh you know he he'll he'll ask
  • 00:36:55
for for my opinion on on on on on
  • 00:36:57
certain matters now it's changed now he
  • 00:36:59
has wife grownup kids you know so he has
  • 00:37:02
that ecosystem but early on in his
  • 00:37:04
career he kind of had uh you know just
  • 00:37:06
kind of a small group or a small circle
  • 00:37:09
and so back then it was what do you
  • 00:37:11
think of this you know what what what
  • 00:37:13
would you do about this and and and so
  • 00:37:16
we would um communicate a lot on on on
  • 00:37:18
certain things like that but now you
  • 00:37:20
know he's got his wife he's got his
  • 00:37:21
family now now all all decisions go go
  • 00:37:23
go through the prop the proper channels
  • 00:37:26
he knows what he needs to do yes and
  • 00:37:29
when he makes a decision with intention
  • 00:37:31
which is really important and he does
  • 00:37:33
get the criticism and you know he was
  • 00:37:34
being booed by fans it was it was it was
  • 00:37:37
a big period in his life yes how does he
  • 00:37:40
    deal with that
  • 00:37:42
psychologically I think it just really
  • 00:37:44
fuels him it just really fuels him but
  • 00:37:47
also it's it's more pressure on him to
  • 00:37:50
    to make sure that this
  • 00:37:51
decision you know he has to make the
  • 00:37:54
decision the right decision you know
  • 00:37:56
when you come to to a um to a Forin Road
  • 00:37:59
    you take
  • 00:38:00
it so how how do we do that in our own
  • 00:38:03
lives well you really again be be
  • 00:38:05
intentional okay you know you know where
  • 00:38:07
you want to be you know so goal setting
  • 00:38:10
is number one like like like we we
  • 00:38:12
discussed earlier goal goal setting is
  • 00:38:14
number one uh and making sure that
  • 00:38:17
that's where you want to be are you sure
  • 00:38:20
you want to you want you want to get
  • 00:38:21
there and do that and why do you want to
  • 00:38:24
do that okay cool if if that's where you
  • 00:38:26
want to be and you know that's that's
  • 00:38:27
your goal okay then every decision again
  • 00:38:30
that you make has has to help you along
  • 00:38:33
the way and it's not going to be like
  • 00:38:34
ear it's it's not going to be popular
  • 00:38:36
but you just you have you have to live
  • 00:38:38
with it because you know that that's
  • 00:38:40
going to help you achieve your goal how
  • 00:38:42
does how does LeBron work with you to
  • 00:38:44
deal with failure to deal with setbacks
  • 00:38:46
to deal with getting things wrong um I I
  • 00:38:50
think he's very accountable you know if
  • 00:38:53
if we messed up on on something okay
  • 00:38:55
we'll we'll discuss it briefly yeah okay
  • 00:38:58
we learn from it and we move on you know
  • 00:39:02
very rarely does he just um just Linger
  • 00:39:06
on oh I made a bad decision and I don't
  • 00:39:08
know if that's the right you know he
  • 00:39:09
    doesn't Mill around you know it's it's
  • 00:39:12
an explay mentality as far as he and I I
  • 00:39:15
I think you know from doing a different
  • 00:39:18
    exercise routine or different Mobility
  • 00:39:21
routine or something you know that that
  • 00:39:23
didn't quite feel right okay M you know
  • 00:39:25
and and I didn't really move well all
  • 00:39:26
right cool we know we we tried it
  • 00:39:28
together we're done let's move on next
  • 00:39:30
we live and learn and we move on I want
  • 00:39:33
to talk to you about the rules of
  • 00:39:35
regimen MH would you first of all
  • 00:39:37
explain what they are to the audience or
  • 00:39:39
describe what we mean by rules of
  • 00:39:41
regimen it all it all goes goes back to
  • 00:39:43
goal setting and that that's something
  • 00:39:45
that cannot sway you know depending on
  • 00:39:48
the day and so you know you establish
  • 00:39:50
your own recipe your own regimen for for
  • 00:39:53
    success and
  • 00:39:54
so again it's all about account ility
  • 00:39:57
accountability so you know you set your
  • 00:39:59
own rules up for what what you want to
  • 00:40:02
become and uh it's an everyday Journey
  • 00:40:05
okay so I want to talk to you about a
  • 00:40:07
couple of the key things that I think
  • 00:40:08
really stand out in your book that will
  • 00:40:10
have a big impact on people the first
  • 00:40:12
one is nutrition you know we've all
  • 00:40:14
heard the phrase you can't outtrain a
  • 00:40:16
bad diet yes so from all the work that
  • 00:40:18
you've you and LeBron have done together
  • 00:40:20
what does a what does a good diet look
  • 00:40:22
like uh balanced a balanced diet you
  • 00:40:26
    know and then again
  • 00:40:28
all all all goes back to what your goal
  • 00:40:30
is yeah you know uh you know what works
  • 00:40:33
for for me may not work for for the next
  • 00:40:35
individual Etc but whatever your goal
  • 00:40:37
what what do you want to achieve okay so
  • 00:40:39
say say you want to I lose 10 pounds and
  • 00:40:42
and and uh you know be more toned Etc
  • 00:40:44
well you know you got to you got to eat
  • 00:40:46
more protein okay you know you got to
  • 00:40:47
cut out some of the fast foods you know
  • 00:40:49
you got to come out some of the soft
  • 00:40:50
drinks you know that's all basic things
  • 00:40:52
so just stay balanced in what you're
  • 00:40:53
doing you know more and just make Common
  • 00:40:56
    Sense decisions
  • 00:40:57
what does a a day's nutrition look like
  • 00:40:59
for someone like LeBron for someone like
  • 00:41:01
um like LJ you know it's a it's a heavy
  • 00:41:05
breakfast you know during the season
  • 00:41:07
    it's a heavy breakfast because he's
  • 00:41:08
going to need those calories he's going
  • 00:41:09
to need those calories come 7 o'clock 8
  • 00:41:11
o'clock at night and so it's a heavy
  • 00:41:13
breakfast and his Chef does an amazing
  • 00:41:15
job she she's wonderful um you know of
  • 00:41:17
of uh it's more high protein also eggs
  • 00:41:20
uh lots of eggs you know some some some
  • 00:41:23
turkey bacon Etc um you know don't be
  • 00:41:25
afraid to sprinkle in a couple you know
  • 00:41:27
small pancakes in there as well you know
  • 00:41:29
you know you need those carbohydrates
  • 00:41:30
and you need to feel good about what
  • 00:41:32
what you're eating you know reward
  • 00:41:33
yourself because you know you just had 8
  • 00:41:35
to 10 hours of sleep you know you're
  • 00:41:36
well hydrated you know you've worked out
  • 00:41:39
the night before and you know you're
  • 00:41:40
going to burn that uh that that night as
  • 00:41:42
well because you you're about to play 40
  • 00:41:44
minutes a night but it's a ton of
  • 00:41:45
hydration you know he carries around um
  • 00:41:48
a gallon of uh you know the giant jug of
  • 00:41:51
water that that that's that's one gallon
  • 00:41:53
he carries around everywhere he goes he
  • 00:41:55
has a couple of those every day really
  • 00:41:57
oh yeah why is that so important well
  • 00:41:59
it's just hydration hydration is key for
  • 00:42:02
obviously preventing um failure on the
  • 00:42:05
court you know failure can mean um
  • 00:42:07
fatigue failure can mean muscle cramping
  • 00:42:10
um or just lack of focus you know from
  • 00:42:13
being uh dehydrated uh so it being
  • 00:42:16
dehydrated can really really play play a
  • 00:42:18
key role in uh in in why you why you
  • 00:42:22
would lose a game or why your
  • 00:42:23
performance can be can um you know can
  • 00:42:25
be a failure and is it the same for for
  • 00:42:27
you and I for you know Ben who's in the
  • 00:42:29
    corner recording this conversation like
  • 00:42:31
do we all need to pay particular Focus
  • 00:42:33
to that to our we we all need to H I
  • 00:42:36
would say at least a gallon a day at
  • 00:42:38
least a gallon a day um in order for our
  • 00:42:41
um for our our digestive you know our
  • 00:42:43
    digestive system to work functionally
  • 00:42:46
and um and for again hydration muscle
  • 00:42:49
cramping and just overall Clarity you
  • 00:42:52
know you you you you you'll be amazed of
  • 00:42:54
how uh how clear your mind thinks when
  • 00:42:57
when you're well hydrated and you also
  • 00:42:59
talk in your book about scoring our
  • 00:43:00
meals yeah again this is about living
  • 00:43:03
    intentionally thinking ABS about the
  • 00:43:05
things that are going into our body so
  • 00:43:07
how how should someone go about scoring
  • 00:43:09
their meals for the first time how do we
  • 00:43:10
do that I would say um is your plate
  • 00:43:13
well balanced okay you know the more
  • 00:43:16
balanced it is the higher the score if
  • 00:43:18
it's just all pancakes well you're going
  • 00:43:19
to have a low have a low score you know
  • 00:43:23
do do you have an element of fruit do
  • 00:43:25
you have an element of veggies do you
  • 00:43:26
have you know how is your protein over
  • 00:43:29
uh is your protein heavier than your
  • 00:43:31
carbohydrate intake well then you know
  • 00:43:33
then that that would be a a really high
  • 00:43:35
high scoring uh meal you know if it's uh
  • 00:43:38
if it's more more protein okay that's
  • 00:43:40
great but you know you need some fruits
  • 00:43:42
and veggies as well so is LeBron going
  • 00:43:44
through life like this sort of always
  • 00:43:46
reviewing was that the best I could do
  • 00:43:49
in that training session was that the
  • 00:43:50
best meal I could eat was that the best
  • 00:43:52
sleep I could get was that the best
  • 00:43:54
hydration I could deal with was that the
  • 00:43:56
best nutrition was that the best
  • 00:43:57
conversation with my coach yes he is but
  • 00:43:59
he's not taking time right right as soon
  • 00:44:02
as he's done to sit and and go over
  • 00:44:04
    everything he's he's he's again it's
  • 00:44:07
it's all overlapping and so before he
  • 00:44:09
gets on the court he's reviewing what we
  • 00:44:11
just did in the waight room you know was
  • 00:44:12
that exercise beneficial was was this
  • 00:44:14
you know how was that how was that going
  • 00:44:16
but part of that is is my job as well
  • 00:44:18
you know making sure that he's doing the
  • 00:44:19
right things in the weight room the
  • 00:44:21
right the right exercise routine you
  • 00:44:22
know so what we do in the weight room
  • 00:44:24
will enhance what he's doing on the
  • 00:44:25
    basketball court you mentioned about
  • 00:44:27
recovery quite a few times yes where on
  • 00:44:30
the list of the most important things to
  • 00:44:32
get us to our own version of high
  • 00:44:33
performance sits recovery you know it's
  • 00:44:36
it's mindset number one mental awareness
  • 00:44:38
mindset it's uh nutrition it's Mobility
  • 00:44:43
exercising and then it's recovery so how
  • 00:44:45
do all of us go about improving our
  • 00:44:47
recovery what are the steps we can take
  • 00:44:49
right now to make our recovery better
  • 00:44:52
okay this this is now um um assuming
  • 00:44:55
that that you have your road map already
  • 00:44:57
res set you have your road map you have
  • 00:44:58
your goal already and so um you know
  • 00:45:02
let's say the goal is to run a marathon
  • 00:45:04
and so um today I I really you know I I
  • 00:45:06
ran 15 miles today well what what was my
  • 00:45:10
goal tomorrow you know so so Bas based
  • 00:45:12
on on your goal based on your plan um
  • 00:45:16
how how can you be best suited to to run
  • 00:45:20
either to run the next day or or is next
  • 00:45:22
day recovery day or is next day uh
  • 00:45:24
session in the weight room what can you
  • 00:45:26
do right after you're done in order to
  • 00:45:28
to to make sure that you're ready for
  • 00:45:30
the next day uh you know to to to
  • 00:45:32
perform at your maximum and what are the
  • 00:45:35
what are the things that we should do I
  • 00:45:37
mean from from making sure you're well
  • 00:45:38
hydrated making sure you know all goes
  • 00:45:40
back to that recipe of hydration
  • 00:45:42
utrition Mobility you know how how how
  • 00:45:45
mobile are you you know are you doing
  • 00:45:46
your stretches are you doing the
  • 00:45:48
mobility work are you doing some of the
  • 00:45:50
small difference makers what I'm talk
  • 00:45:51
about in my book uh difference makers
  • 00:45:53
are these small minimal exercises that
  • 00:45:56
you can do throughout the day to help
  • 00:45:57
strengthen your joints you know are you
  • 00:45:59
are you doing that are you getting
  • 00:46:00
    enough rest and
  • 00:46:02
sleep how do we improve our
  • 00:46:05
sleep I I would say um by by shutting
  • 00:46:09
shutting off your uh your phones or your
  • 00:46:11
iPads you know but an hour an hour
  • 00:46:14
before you uh you know you plan on
  • 00:46:16
sleeping you know and and just work
  • 00:46:18
backwards if you know you have meeting
  • 00:46:19
    at at 9:00 a.m. okay
  • 00:46:22
well make sure you have eight hours of
  • 00:46:25
of of sleep like locked in there make
  • 00:46:27
sure you give yourself you know uh time
  • 00:46:28
in the morning to do a little Mobility
  • 00:46:30
15 minutes if you will uh and and
  • 00:46:33
however long you need to eat something
  • 00:46:34
and so work backwards in order for you
  • 00:46:37
to to help prepare you for for the next
  • 00:46:40
day and there's a few things you
  • 00:46:41
mentioned in your book that I just want
  • 00:46:43
to pick up on at bedtime you talk about
  • 00:46:45
the importance of magnesium yes what
  • 00:46:47
does that do for us it just really
  • 00:46:49
relaxes and and um really Cal calms your
  • 00:46:53
muscles calms your body calms your um
  • 00:46:56
your your your brain a little bit it
  • 00:46:57
really puts you in a nice sense of um
  • 00:47:01
relaxation and I've heard a lot of
  • 00:47:03
people talk about magnesium I've not had
  • 00:47:05
very many people talk about 6 to eight
  • 00:47:06
ounces of tart cherry juice M talk to me
  • 00:47:10
about the importance of cherry juice
  • 00:47:11
before tart cherry juice definitely can
  • 00:47:14
be a a uh a sleep aid it helps with um
  • 00:47:18
    you know as an
  • 00:47:19
    anti-inflammatory um medicine if you
  • 00:47:21
will but you know it's all natural it's
  • 00:47:23
all T tart cherries and so that's
  • 00:47:25
something that's a concoction that we
  • 00:47:26
use on the road is tarte cherry juice
  • 00:47:29
with some magnesium as well in order for
  • 00:47:32
you just especially after games just to
  • 00:47:33
kind of relax you and and go to sleep
  • 00:47:36
you know naturally without the you know
  • 00:47:39
without the the melatonins and all this
  • 00:47:40
other stuff out there so that's what
  • 00:47:42
LeBron's taking after a game to take
  • 00:47:44
bring himself into on on summer most
  • 00:47:46
days yes when he's busy yeah um you also
  • 00:47:48
talk about the room being completely
  • 00:47:50
black and lowering the temperature why
  • 00:47:52
is a completely black room important
  • 00:47:55
well it it minim it minimizes
  • 00:47:57
distractions so so the the eyes play
  • 00:47:59
play a key role in in in in you you know
  • 00:48:01
falling asleep and shutting off the
  • 00:48:03
brain you know getting yourself in a
  • 00:48:04
morbid relaxed State that's why you know
  • 00:48:06
phones are so phones are a major
  • 00:48:09
detriment you know to to to sleeping you
  • 00:48:11
know we all love to scroll you know
  • 00:48:13
right before bed etc you know get back
  • 00:48:14
our text messages and our emails but uh
  • 00:48:17
the more we can shut off light
  • 00:48:19
    especially artificial light you know
  • 00:48:21
before bed the more the more relaxed
  • 00:48:23
you're going to have and a deeper sleep
  • 00:48:25
you're going to get well love about this
  • 00:48:27
conversation is is not that we're
  • 00:48:28
talking about a year of success or 18
  • 00:48:31
months or two years of success it's
  • 00:48:33
about longevity I think the true high
  • 00:48:35
performance is being able to do
  • 00:48:36
something and then being able to sustain
  • 00:48:38
that thing and I was just I was you
  • 00:48:41
reading in my research for this that
  • 00:48:42
LeBron is the last player of his draft
  • 00:48:45
season to remain in the NBA yes that's
  • 00:48:47
out of 58 players half of the players
  • 00:48:51
drafted when he was drafted didn't make
  • 00:48:53
    it past five years that's that's that's
  • 00:48:56
an amazing stat you guys have just
  • 00:48:58
finished the year 21 yes so what would
  • 00:49:01
you share with us is the secret to
  • 00:49:03
    LeBron's
  • 00:49:05
    longevity daily
  • 00:49:07
    accountability the decisions you make
  • 00:49:09
each and every day uh will affect you in
  • 00:49:12
the long run yeah and so if you make the
  • 00:49:14
the right decisions for most of those
  • 00:49:16
days and obviously we're talking about
  • 00:49:17
you know we're not robots but uh you
  • 00:49:20
know if you make those decisions and
  • 00:49:22
have the right people around you is also
  • 00:49:24
is also another one have the right
  • 00:49:25
    people around you
  • 00:49:27
then that's going to lead you know to to
  • 00:49:30
whatever your your goal may be yeah you
  • 00:49:32
know that's going to help you achieve
  • 00:49:33
whatever goal that that you set out for
  • 00:49:35
yourself and what I think that you can't
  • 00:49:37
say often enough is having the having
  • 00:49:40
the thing the moment is here and too
  • 00:49:42
many people may be focus on this is what
  • 00:49:44
I want but they don't take it right back
  • 00:49:46
to here yeah which is which is the work
  • 00:49:49
right at the very beginning yes yes
  • 00:49:51
doing the ground work MH um we've talked
  • 00:49:54
    about evolving and learning
  • 00:49:57
I'd love to know not just you know we've
  • 00:49:59
spoken about how LeBron deals with
  • 00:50:01
setbacks and issues and things that have
  • 00:50:03
gone wrong what about dealing with
  • 00:50:04
success how how has he not got to the
  • 00:50:07
point where he's won his first title or
  • 00:50:10
he's had his first big moment of success
  • 00:50:12
or he's got his first million in the
  • 00:50:13
bank and then he's taken his foot off
  • 00:50:16
the gas how's that not happened how has
  • 00:50:18
he kept on going for all this time the
  • 00:50:21
early starts pushing his body the
  • 00:50:23
sacrifices of not seeing his family the
  • 00:50:25
the constant need to be the best well it
  • 00:50:28
it it all stems from from that decision
  • 00:50:30
that that one decision that that he made
  • 00:50:33
he he now has to live with and that
  • 00:50:36
decision is to be the greatest and and
  • 00:50:38
so you need it's still not done so you
  • 00:50:41
know everyone expects him to to take his
  • 00:50:43
foot off the gas but you know you're
  • 00:50:45
you're here to show people what what
  • 00:50:48
they haven't seen yet yeah like like
  • 00:50:51
nothing they've ever seen before and so
  • 00:50:53
that that's on his mind I'm I'm still
  • 00:50:55
playing I'm still working hard cuz I'm
  • 00:50:57
    still showing people something that
  • 00:50:58
they've never seen before what's the
  • 00:51:00
thing that he's done in all of your time
  • 00:51:01
    working together that's taking your
  • 00:51:03
breath away that's amazed you the
  • 00:51:06
most his uh his humility his humility um
  • 00:51:11
amongst all all of the success that he's
  • 00:51:12
had he's still you know very much a a
  • 00:51:15
dad at the end of the day you know he's
  • 00:51:18
still he's still very much a family man
  • 00:51:19
so you know sometimes with uh with
  • 00:51:22
success you kind of you put that off to
  • 00:51:24
the side a bit and and you and come back
  • 00:51:27
and and haunt you but you know he's
  • 00:51:29
still dead does he not feel he's the
  • 00:51:31
    best
  • 00:51:32
already he he might but uh you know it's
  • 00:51:36
not stopping his uh his drive you know
  • 00:51:39
is definitely it's not stopping his
  • 00:51:40
Drive he's he's here to to again to to
  • 00:51:43
show folks that you know yeah you can
  • 00:51:46
you can achieve greatness you know at
  • 00:51:47
whatever age but and and I'm here you
  • 00:51:50
know on the show to tell you that it's
  • 00:51:52
it's not easy it's not easy and there's
  • 00:51:55
    a reason why only
  • 00:51:57
    1% of people are
  • 00:51:59
really true high performance uh true
  • 00:52:02
High performers they can do this for
  • 00:52:04
long period of time what are the hardest
  • 00:52:07
parts of it the sacrifice the sacrifice
  • 00:52:11
of uh especially if you're a family man
  • 00:52:13
you know you're you're and and I go
  • 00:52:14
through it as well you know you
  • 00:52:16
    sacrifice family time you sacrifice
  • 00:52:17
family loved ones um but if that's your
  • 00:52:21
goal that's what you set out to do and
  • 00:52:23
you've shared your goals with with your
  • 00:52:25
family if you shared your goals with
  • 00:52:27
loved ones and they're all helping to do
  • 00:52:29
it well you know hopefully they they
  • 00:52:32
they understand and neither of you have
  • 00:52:34
ever got sick of each other you've
  • 00:52:35
enjoyed each other's company all this
  • 00:52:36
time oh we we get sick of each other all
  • 00:52:38
the time do you yeah all the time you
  • 00:52:40
know we we there's there's times
  • 00:52:43
especially during the middle middle of
  • 00:52:44
the Season we're like oh gosh you know I
  • 00:52:46
got I have to see Mike again oh yeah
  • 00:52:48
well you know you're no picnic either
  • 00:52:50
pal you know after after 20 years of of
  • 00:52:53
uh seeing each other you know for for
  • 00:52:55
for all this time but we we know what
  • 00:52:57
the journey is we we know what the goal
  • 00:52:59
is and that that's to be the greatest
  • 00:53:01
and how far and Advance did the two of
  • 00:53:03
you plan like what does what does
  • 00:53:05
planning look like for you I I will plan
  • 00:53:08
stuff for him as far as performance-
  • 00:53:10
wise um a couple of weeks in advance
  • 00:53:13
because this is the NBA this this is you
  • 00:53:17
know some nights you can play you know
  • 00:53:19
32 minutes a game okay great you know in
  • 00:53:21
one game next night we can go to double
  • 00:53:23
overtime so I don't want to play too far
  • 00:53:25
    ahead
  • 00:53:27
because the uncertainty of the game we
  • 00:53:30
know we know we know what the game
  • 00:53:31
schedule is you know that comes out you
  • 00:53:32
know in August but it's you know we
  • 00:53:35
don't know what the game itself would
  • 00:53:36
look like it's going to be a double
  • 00:53:37
overtime is it going to be you know an
  • 00:53:39
easy game for him so and so uh I need to
  • 00:53:42
plan at the most a couple weeks in
  • 00:53:44
advance knowing that things can change
  • 00:53:47
you've worked with some other incredible
  • 00:53:49
athes as well you know obviously we
  • 00:53:50
spoken a lot about LeBron yes tell us
  • 00:53:53
some of the other greates that you've
  • 00:53:55
you've coached and worked with I had a
  • 00:53:57
chance early on when I was in Miami to
  • 00:53:58
work with Rory melroy who was just
  • 00:54:01
amazing an amazing individual very very
  • 00:54:04
focused you know we first um uh came
  • 00:54:08
together through m a mutual friend and
  • 00:54:10
his his goals were very very much the
  • 00:54:12
same you know I I want to be the
  • 00:54:14
greatest I want to do this you know and
  • 00:54:17
and so um you know we we talked about uh
  • 00:54:20
you know kind of the mindset number one
  • 00:54:22
and then doing some of the little things
  • 00:54:24
uh do doing all the prep work etc and
  • 00:54:26
then it and then um recently I guess
  • 00:54:28
about three years ago now um I was
  • 00:54:31
introduced to Miles Garrett uh Cleveland
  • 00:54:33
Cleveland Browns player uh who's just an
  • 00:54:36
awesome individual just a very very
  • 00:54:38
special individual and and uh I love him
  • 00:54:40
    to death he's a he's just a phenomenal
  • 00:54:42
person and one heck of an athlete I mean
  • 00:54:46
you know we've all seen the highlights
  • 00:54:47
and whatever and so we started our our
  • 00:54:50
our process and he said could you
  • 00:54:52
oversee some of the stuff that I'm doing
  • 00:54:54
or could you could we put a team
  • 00:54:55
together around me you know we we all
  • 00:54:58
know you're busy with the with LJ
  • 00:55:00
fulltime but can you kind of oversee and
  • 00:55:02
give me some tidbits on on on what
  • 00:55:04
things to to change or to add or you
  • 00:55:07
know what am I missing from my prep my
  • 00:55:09
prep work because I want to take my my
  • 00:55:12
training my performance to the next
  • 00:55:13
level and then grow from there and so I
  • 00:55:16
said yeah let's do it so I was able to
  • 00:55:18
put a team around them um and oversee
  • 00:55:21
some of the things that he's doing and
  • 00:55:23
um you know with his hard work with his
  • 00:55:25
commitment uh uh not only did he talk
  • 00:55:27
about it but he did alter some of the
  • 00:55:30
things he was doing he altered his his
  • 00:55:32
training he altered his mindset he
  • 00:55:34
altered some of the daily habits and uh
  • 00:55:38
you know he's had some really really
  • 00:55:39
good successes this past year he was
  • 00:55:41
voted uh NFL defensive player of the
  • 00:55:43
year so love that and when you're
  • 00:55:45
working with someone like him or with
  • 00:55:46
Rory what's the what's the most valuable
  • 00:55:48
question you you can ask them what's
  • 00:55:50
your goal and what's stopping you from
  • 00:55:52
getting there yeah you know you're
  • 00:55:54
you're asking me for help you're asking
  • 00:55:55
me for advice what's stopping you from
  • 00:55:57
from from getting there then then you
  • 00:56:00
turn back you turn the ownership back on
  • 00:56:01
them and say well now now I got to be
  • 00:56:04
    self accountable now [ __ ] yeah I mean I
  • 00:56:07
think you know the the true Mastery of
  • 00:56:09
yours is working with Incredible people
  • 00:56:12
giving them your knowledge and your
  • 00:56:13
    understanding but also learning from
  • 00:56:15
them as well yeah and I know you know
  • 00:56:17
early on you had the opportunity to work
  • 00:56:18
with Tim Grover yes um who is you know
  • 00:56:21
again lorded is one of the greats in
  • 00:56:23
this world Michael Jordan's trainer of
  • 00:56:25
    course
  • 00:56:27
what what was the biggest thing you
  • 00:56:28
learned from working with Tim I love
  • 00:56:30
that question because you know everyone
  • 00:56:32
says oh you know you you're around Tim
  • 00:56:33
Grover and Michael Jordan um well I was
  • 00:56:36
around him for two weeks yeah two
  • 00:56:39
summers in a row when Jordan was coming
  • 00:56:41
back to play for the Wizards so in those
  • 00:56:43
four weeks total in the two years I
  • 00:56:46
learned it wasn't about the exercises it
  • 00:56:48
wasn't about the working out it was it
  • 00:56:50
was about uh how to handle myself around
  • 00:56:54
greatness and and and how it's so I
  • 00:56:56
watched Tim how he handled himself
  • 00:56:59
around greatness and around around MJ
  • 00:57:01
and so I I took more I learned more from
  • 00:57:04
that than than I did the exercises you
  • 00:57:06
know it wasn't about the squats or the
  • 00:57:07
bench press or anything like it was more
  • 00:57:09
about how to handle myself and how to
  • 00:57:11
make sure that Tim was matching
  • 00:57:14
Michael's energy when he walked in the
  • 00:57:15
room or Tim would even supersede it and
  • 00:57:18
bring more energy you know if if if one
  • 00:57:21
day MJ came in you know in a mood or or
  • 00:57:24
what have you you know Tim was there and
  • 00:57:26
he would provide the energy for Michael
  • 00:57:28
and you've taken that on that's
  • 00:57:29
something that you've yes yes yes yeah
  • 00:57:31
so I I learned more about about handling
  • 00:57:35
greatness you know tell us what else you
  • 00:57:36
learn about handling greatness I think
  • 00:57:38
that's fascinating yeah I think just
  • 00:57:39
just really patience and um and and I
  • 00:57:42
spoke about it uh in a in a conference
  • 00:57:45
recently about matching the energy in
  • 00:57:47
the room reading The Energy in the room
  • 00:57:50
and especially if I'm just working
  • 00:57:51
oneon-one with an individual uh if he or
  • 00:57:54
she comes in and you know if they're in
  • 00:57:56
a mood or what have you okay I kind of I
  • 00:57:59
don't do any digging and po hey what's
  • 00:58:01
wrong yeah you know I just if they want
  • 00:58:03
to talk then then they they'll talk
  • 00:58:05
about it but uh my energy doesn't
  • 00:58:09
    doesn't change meaning I I don't bring
  • 00:58:10
it down or not I I bring it even I push
  • 00:58:13
them even more because by by me
  • 00:58:16
    challenging them then they're forgetting
  • 00:58:18
about about their about their problems
  • 00:58:21
and then they at the end of the day and
  • 00:58:22
I talk about in the book they feel
  • 00:58:24
better after a hard work workout or
  • 00:58:26
after a challenging session with me then
  • 00:58:29
they feel better you know what okay yeah
  • 00:58:31
this is the way I should address the
  • 00:58:32
problem that I had you know before I
  • 00:58:34
came in you know they usually figure out
  • 00:58:36
    a way you know and and it's it's it's
  • 00:58:38
    interesting what exercise does to
  • 00:58:40
stimulate the mind and the thought
  • 00:58:42
processes around it so I think something
  • 00:58:44
that's really interesting here is that
  • 00:58:45
so many of us see other people doing
  • 00:58:47
more or achieving great things and it
  • 00:58:49
derails us it's almost like their
  • 00:58:51
success is our failure but it sounds
  • 00:58:53
like LeBron is able to look at other
  • 00:58:56
people doing great things or doing more
  • 00:58:58
or finding an edge and be inspired by
  • 00:59:00
that rather than knocked back by that is
  • 00:59:02
that fair Yes yes again it goes back to
  • 00:59:04
the mindset what is your mindset with
  • 00:59:06
with with all of this you know how
  • 00:59:07
serious are you about achieving that
  • 00:59:09
goal well don't don't look at
  • 00:59:11
competition as a you know look at it fly
  • 00:59:14
yes you know you want to dominate your
  • 00:59:15
competition but you also want to learn
  • 00:59:16
from them don't let your ego get in the
  • 00:59:18
way of of your uh progress yeah you know
  • 00:59:21
so learn learn from your mistakes learn
  • 00:59:23
from your defeats and learn from some of
  • 00:59:25
    the uh
  • 00:59:26
Le learn from your competition as well
  • 00:59:28
so one of the most common questions I
  • 00:59:30
get asked if I'm walking down the street
  • 00:59:31
is I listen to your podcast what is the
  • 00:59:33
thing that unites everyone that's been
  • 00:59:35
on there you know what what do high
  • 00:59:37
performers all have in common you know
  • 00:59:38
people are looking for a shortcut right
  • 00:59:40
you spent a little bit of time with Kobe
  • 00:59:43
a bit of time with Michael Jordan plenty
  • 00:59:46
of time with LeBron James some time with
  • 00:59:48
Rory maroy some some NFL greates as well
  • 00:59:51
so when you look at the plethora of
  • 00:59:53
talent at the very highest level that
  • 00:59:55
you've spent spent decades working with
  • 00:59:58
what do you believe unites them
  • 01:00:01
all when they finally make a
  • 01:00:04
decision that they were willing to
  • 01:00:06
sacrifice to be the greatest once they
  • 01:00:09
make that decision then it's it's came
  • 01:00:11
over they're willing to to face down
  • 01:00:14
that uh uh that that Journey that
  • 01:00:17
journey of sacrifice but the only way
  • 01:00:19
they get there is by believing the
  • 01:00:20
greatness is possible so do they all
  • 01:00:22
have that innate belief that they can
  • 01:00:25
they can be the Great is yes yeah yeah
  • 01:00:28
once you once you decide that you you
  • 01:00:30
have to uh you know then then everything
  • 01:00:32
else is easy because you know where you
  • 01:00:34
want to be yeah all right so now make
  • 01:00:37
make the make the Daily Commitment to it
  • 01:00:39
listen before we wrap this up and I've
  • 01:00:40
love this conversation there was a great
  • 01:00:42
quote from Asha which I feel I need to
  • 01:00:44
share um Asha said um Mike is more than
  • 01:00:48
just a teacher or a trainer his approach
  • 01:00:50
to health and wellness is an approach to
  • 01:00:51
life if you stay ready you ain't got to
  • 01:00:54
get ready yes um look Usher is he's not
  • 01:00:58
quite a normal guy is he I mean he looks
  • 01:00:59
    incredible he's a he's a talented guy
  • 01:01:01
    but he's not he's not a professional
  • 01:01:03
athlete so for people like me people
  • 01:01:05
like Usha people who are listening and
  • 01:01:07
    watching this conversation right now
  • 01:01:10
what advice would you like to give to us
  • 01:01:13
about how we can find our own Edge how
  • 01:01:15
we can find our own version of greatness
  • 01:01:17
I I would say uh stay centered and stay
  • 01:01:19
occupied in what what would what makes
  • 01:01:23
you happy and what makes you um um want
  • 01:01:27
to be great and so you figure out your
  • 01:01:29
own Journey okay figure out your own
  • 01:01:31
journey and be accountable to yourself
  • 01:01:34
um throughout that Journey you know know
  • 01:01:36
that you're going to have some uh yeah
  • 01:01:37
you're going to have some days where
  • 01:01:38
you're just not feeling it or you got
  • 01:01:40
some days where it's just not not coming
  • 01:01:42
together as you would like but but
  • 01:01:44
continue with the journey and don't lose
  • 01:01:46
the belief on those tough days don't
  • 01:01:47
lose the belief absolutely not does
  • 01:01:49
LeBron have tough days absolutely yeah
  • 01:01:52
absolutely but you know he he he takes
  • 01:01:54
it on the chin and he knows that there's
  • 01:01:58
that that today today will be gone
  • 01:01:59
tomorrow okay so do the best you can
  • 01:02:02
today and tomorrow start fresh and in
  • 01:02:04
all your years of coaching him how many
  • 01:02:06
times has he turned up to the gym and
  • 01:02:08
gone I'm not having it today I'm going
  • 01:02:09
to just toss this off it's happened as
  • 01:02:11
it's happened a few times where he comes
  • 01:02:13
in and the energy isn't quite there but
  • 01:02:15
he battles through it because he knows
  • 01:02:17
in his mind he does not lose sight of
  • 01:02:18
that goal to be the greatest and he
  • 01:02:20
knows it's not easy he knows it's not
  • 01:02:22
going to be easy you know and and and uh
  • 01:02:25
he's fueled by you know by
  • 01:02:28
by by being able to to show folks
  • 01:02:31
    something different again that they
  • 01:02:32
    haven't experienced before it wasn't
  • 01:02:34
long ago that Michael Johnson was in the
  • 01:02:35
very chair you're in now and he said he
  • 01:02:36
never missed a training session he said
  • 01:02:38
why would why would I ever miss a
  • 01:02:40
training session it's just was not part
  • 01:02:41
of my mindset for being the greatest
  • 01:02:44
love it yeah exactly it's it's not part
  • 01:02:46
of that of that of that that that
  • 01:02:48
Journey that they should just they just
  • 01:02:49
laid out for yourself you've given so
  • 01:02:52
much to LeBron so much of your knowledge
  • 01:02:53
so much of your experience you know
  • 01:02:55
you've youve kind of helped to each
  • 01:02:56
other um after all your time together
  • 01:02:58
all these years the highs the lows the
  • 01:03:00
    successes the
  • 01:03:02
struggles if you could say one thing to
  • 01:03:04
LeBron what would you want to tell
  • 01:03:08
him I just just that I'm proud of him
  • 01:03:12
I'm I'm proud to be u a part of this
  • 01:03:15
journey that's it love that and when you
  • 01:03:17
when you think about how proud you are
  • 01:03:19
    where does your brain take
  • 01:03:22
you it takes you always back to our to
  • 01:03:24

would you recommend as a apart from your
  • 01:05:37
