  • 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

The speaker shares a personal journey beginning with their childhood in Niger, West Africa, emphasizing the scarcity of resources like electricity. Despite early successes in life, including founding a consulting business and studying electric guitar, the speaker faced significant personal setbacks, losing their job, money, and home. This led to a life reset where they chose to pursue meaningful work over merely profitable opportunities. Eventually, the speaker took a role with an energy company in crisis, leveraging their experience in dealing with crisis situations, and began questioning and redefining the fundamentals of energy consumption and sustainability.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:10:00

In their quest for understanding energy, the speaker uncovers a disconnect between perception and reality, such as unsustainable practices posed as 'green'. They challenge traditional sales views and emphasize a paradigm shift towards decreasing fossil fuel usage and embracing renewable sources, critiquing the illusion of endless consumption. The speaker then embarks on a mission to redefine energy companies' roles. Inspired by Richard Buckminster Fuller's idea of building new models over fighting old ones, they develop a unique business model for an energy company that profits when clients consume less energy, integrating ecological and societal benefits into its core operations to address energy poverty.

  • 00:10:00 - 00:17:09

Returning to Niger, the speaker distributes solar-powered lights and phone chargers to empower students, insisting on a pay-it-forward system where children plant trees in return. This visit illustrates their commitment to long-term change and the viability of renewable energy in resource-scarce areas. They highlight Niger's solar-powered mobile network and street lighting as examples of innovation. The talk concludes with the aspiration that access to clean energy should become a universal human right, urging businesses and individuals to innovate towards a sustainable future with tangible actions rather than intentions.

    thank
  • 00:00:08
you so wonderful to be here
  • 00:00:15
um if all the work in the world were
  • 00:00:19
    voluntary
  • 00:00:20
    work what would you
  • 00:00:24
do I've had to ask myself that question
  • 00:00:27
a number of times anyways let me start
  • 00:00:30
with this picture this picture here was
  • 00:00:33
taken by my mother in the early 80s in a
  • 00:00:36
    country called ner in West
  • 00:00:40
Africa and the boy in the middle is
  • 00:00:43
me CU that's where I grew up and I'm
  • 00:00:47
sitting next to my brother and our
  • 00:00:50
neighbor and as you can see we're
  • 00:00:52
    watching
  • 00:00:53
TV now watching TV in ner is a big thing
  • 00:00:59
CU in our town there were two
  • 00:01:03
TVs right now in newer 90% of all the
  • 00:01:07
    people have no access to
  • 00:01:09
electricity so you could say that we
  • 00:01:11
    were
  • 00:01:14
blessed now I took that blessing of
  • 00:01:16
    electricity very very seriously cuz
  • 00:01:19
after a number of years we returned to
  • 00:01:21
the Netherlands and I enrolled in
  • 00:01:24
    Conservatory to study electric
  • 00:01:28
    guitar here's the proof
  • 00:01:34
and then a few years went ahead passed
  • 00:01:38
by and uh I founded this little
  • 00:01:41
Consulting business and life was going
  • 00:01:44
well and I became father of two amazing
  • 00:01:47
    little
  • 00:01:50
boys and a little while later things
  • 00:01:53
    went
  • 00:01:56
South what happened was I lost my
  • 00:02:02
    work I lost my
  • 00:02:05
relationship I lost my money lost my
  • 00:02:09
house lost a whole number of
  • 00:02:12
things it was time for a big
  • 00:02:16
reset and I was sitting in this tiny
  • 00:02:19
little room wondering about what to do
  • 00:02:25
next and at that moment I
  • 00:02:28
realized that I had a lot of power cuz
  • 00:02:33
i' lost everything so I could win
  • 00:02:37
anything and um what I decided to do
  • 00:02:41
there was use this word a lot I would
  • 00:02:45
get all these job opportunities for
  • 00:02:46
instance and I'd say no to them why
  • 00:02:50
because I decided that I would do work
  • 00:02:53
that I deemed useful in some sense so I
  • 00:02:57
turned down all these work opportunities
  • 00:02:59
where I I would do work just for the
  • 00:03:01
    sake of earning
  • 00:03:03
money now we're going to fast forward a
  • 00:03:05
little bit and I stole a little logo
  • 00:03:07
    here a
  • 00:03:09
little um a number of years later and
  • 00:03:12
    this is a little while
  • 00:03:15
ago I was looking at my life and I was
  • 00:03:18
    the owner of an energy
  • 00:03:22
company and I was doing all these media
  • 00:03:25
things and I was meeting with uh
  • 00:03:28
    Greenpeace CEOs
  • 00:03:30
and TV appearances and growing a beard
  • 00:03:33
in the meantime and winning prizes at
  • 00:03:37
MIT and um what happened there was
  • 00:03:41
    really
  • 00:03:43
interesting CU I wanted to know how did
  • 00:03:46
    I get
  • 00:03:50
    here going from
  • 00:03:52
    music to this whole
  • 00:03:55
situation well let's rewind a little bit
  • 00:03:58
    again
  • 00:04:01
in 2006 I apparently had said no enough
  • 00:04:05
times to say yes to the right
  • 00:04:08
    opportunity and the right opportunity
  • 00:04:11
being answering the question would you
  • 00:04:13
    lead an energy
  • 00:04:15
company what yes so that's what I
  • 00:04:18
started to do it was an energy company
  • 00:04:21
    in very very bad
  • 00:04:23
shape sales were bad people were not
  • 00:04:25
motivated and they needed a change so
  • 00:04:28
they asked somebody who had some
  • 00:04:30
    experiences with
  • 00:04:33
crisis to do something about it and I
  • 00:04:37
was a complete newcomer to the business
  • 00:04:39
I didn't know anything about energy
  • 00:04:41
itself I knew something about people
  • 00:04:42
though so I would ask all these people
  • 00:04:45
    around me these energy professionals
  • 00:04:47
    questions such as what is
  • 00:04:49
energy now the answers I got to these
  • 00:04:52
questions to this one started sounded a
  • 00:04:56
bit like this some other people would
  • 00:04:58
    answer me
  • 00:05:02
I would get answers like these I was in
  • 00:05:04
    Barcelona they gave me this
  • 00:05:09
    answer apparently something really
  • 00:05:11
    really interesting was going on
  • 00:05:14
here we had lost connection to the
  • 00:05:18
    product we were
  • 00:05:21
selling I went on and ask about
  • 00:05:26
sustainability and I found this one
  • 00:05:28
particular example of a school in
  • 00:05:32
Japan where they wanted to do something
  • 00:05:35
    about their sustainability
  • 00:05:38
image so what they do they bought
  • 00:05:41
    windmills makes sense
  • 00:05:43
right now apparently in that area the
  • 00:05:46
wind wasn't too good so these windmills
  • 00:05:48
    would not turn by
  • 00:05:50
themselves so what did they do for the
  • 00:05:54
sake of upholding this sustainable image
  • 00:05:57
they connected them to the power grid
  • 00:05:59
    and made made them
  • 00:06:03
    turn so that was
  • 00:06:05
sustainability good I went on and ask
  • 00:06:08
    even more questions about consumption
  • 00:06:11
for instance or sales if you
  • 00:06:13
will and of course sales people would
  • 00:06:15
    show me charts like this
  • 00:06:19
    one you all know these
  • 00:06:22
charts sales are going to go up why well
  • 00:06:25
because people all around the world are
  • 00:06:27
going to consume more and more and more
  • 00:06:29
and more energy and I thought to myself
  • 00:06:31
    wait a
  • 00:06:33
minute if we are selling a fossil
  • 00:06:37
    resource and we're basically depleting
  • 00:06:39
    the
  • 00:06:40
resource how can we sell more and more
  • 00:06:42
    and more and
  • 00:06:44
more isn't it the case that the church
  • 00:06:47
    should look like
  • 00:06:50
this in fact scientists that I spoke to
  • 00:06:54
    have proved that we are
  • 00:06:58
here we're on the verge of the big
  • 00:07:02
turnaround we're going to consume less
  • 00:07:04
and less and less and less fossil
  • 00:07:07
fuels this particular picture taught me
  • 00:07:10
    so
  • 00:07:11
    much for one I found
  • 00:07:15
out that what whatever we call
  • 00:07:18
    alternative energy is not
  • 00:07:20
    alternative Sun
  • 00:07:22
wind water have been energy resources
  • 00:07:26
that we've been using for thousands of
  • 00:07:28
years oil coal gas are the actual
  • 00:07:33
    alternative energy
  • 00:07:36
resources CU we've only been using them
  • 00:07:38
for aund and some years and in a little
  • 00:07:41
    while they'll be
  • 00:07:43
gone now this big turnaround is a very
  • 00:07:45
interesting thing and they call a
  • 00:07:49
transition and um there are only three
  • 00:07:53
reasons why we are going to get back to
  • 00:07:56
this situation where we're going to rely
  • 00:07:58
    on renewable resources
  • 00:08:01
first is that we run out of fossil
  • 00:08:04
fuels second is that we run out of
  • 00:08:07
people who are not there anymore I don't
  • 00:08:10
    like that
  • 00:08:12
option third is we find something
  • 00:08:16
better and I like the third option in
  • 00:08:19
fact the Stone Age did not end because
  • 00:08:21
    we ran out of stones
  • 00:08:25
right but then what were we going to do
  • 00:08:28
because in the meantime three and a half
  • 00:08:30
    billion people in the
  • 00:08:31
world still suffer from what we call
  • 00:08:34
    Energy
  • 00:08:37
poverty and I believe that all humans
  • 00:08:40
    are
  • 00:08:41
equal why not give them access to
  • 00:08:45
energy learning about all these numbers
  • 00:08:48
made me really sad it made me angry I
  • 00:08:51
wanted to do something about it and I
  • 00:08:53
didn't know what and I learned this
  • 00:08:56
quote by Richard Buckminster Fuller who
  • 00:08:58
said you don't change things by fighting
  • 00:09:01
the existing realities if you want to
  • 00:09:03
change something build a new model that
  • 00:09:05
    makes the old model
  • 00:09:07
obsolete now I wanted to know what is
  • 00:09:09
    this new
  • 00:09:13
model and I figured energy companies
  • 00:09:17
    make money as they sell
  • 00:09:19
energy the more they sell the more they
  • 00:09:25
earn but in doing that they only serve
  • 00:09:28
    one stakeholder being themselves
  • 00:09:31
    couldn't we find a
  • 00:09:33
way to design energy companies in such a
  • 00:09:36
way that they serve every stakeholder in
  • 00:09:38
    a positive
  • 00:09:40
    way including the environment including
  • 00:09:43
Society including human beings such as
  • 00:09:45
    you and
  • 00:09:48
me and I thought of this Energy company
  • 00:09:51
that would actually earn more money when
  • 00:09:54
    it would sell less
  • 00:09:57
energy sounds impossible right I like
  • 00:10:00
impossible so I started to think about
  • 00:10:03
this model and somehow it happened to
  • 00:10:06
    work
  • 00:10:08
out without going into all kinds of
  • 00:10:12
    details it finances your energy
  • 00:10:15
    transition and you become completely
  • 00:10:17
independent of other people's Fuel and
  • 00:10:20
in the meantime your energy bill is
  • 00:10:21
going to turn all the way to zero this
  • 00:10:24
    is very good for
  • 00:10:25
us nobody believed it but I decided did
  • 00:10:29
I believed enough to quit my job found
  • 00:10:33
    this
  • 00:10:34
company start it up get it going a few
  • 00:10:38
    years
  • 00:10:39
later the path to zero as I called it
  • 00:10:42
    became
  • 00:10:43
successful got a lot of attention and
  • 00:10:46
this was the view from my
  • 00:10:49
office so apparently this very very
  • 00:10:52
crazy plan worked and as I was looking
  • 00:10:56
    over the city of
  • 00:10:57
rdam and think of all these thousands of
  • 00:11:00
buildings that were engaging on their
  • 00:11:01
    path to energy
  • 00:11:04
Independence I decided to quit my
  • 00:11:09
job again it was time for a big
  • 00:11:12
    reset
  • 00:11:14
    why what just
  • 00:11:22
happened I believe that a company is a
  • 00:11:24
    means to an
  • 00:11:25
end it's never an end in itself
  • 00:11:32
and um I wanted to serve the end but I
  • 00:11:37
needed to find out what the end was the
  • 00:11:40
    higher
  • 00:11:41
purpose now in order to get there I
  • 00:11:45
decided to go back to ner
  • 00:11:49
first for the first time in 26 years I
  • 00:11:52
was there exactly there where I grew up
  • 00:11:54
    this is my old
  • 00:11:56
school and this is my brother and I in
  • 00:12:00
    front of our
  • 00:12:02
classroom and this is my brother and I
  • 00:12:04
    in front of our
  • 00:12:09
classroom and I went inside the
  • 00:12:11
classroom and I saw that despite the
  • 00:12:13
    fact that they have no
  • 00:12:16
electricity they do have Excel vintage
  • 00:12:20
    Excel which is really really
  • 00:12:26
cool I found my old teacher M toodo
  • 00:12:31
great great guy remembered all my grades
  • 00:12:33
    even the bad
  • 00:12:35
ones and as you can see was holding a
  • 00:12:38
mobile phone now in ner most of the
  • 00:12:40
people in the streets are playing around
  • 00:12:43
    with their mobile
  • 00:12:45
phones how would you do that in a
  • 00:12:47
country where 90% of the people have no
  • 00:12:49
    access to
  • 00:12:51
electricity well wherever you go you
  • 00:12:55
find shops like these where somebody
  • 00:12:56
connects a diesel generator to number of
  • 00:12:59
AC Outlets that's where you charge your
  • 00:13:01
    phone smart isn't
  • 00:13:07
    it I went there not
  • 00:13:11
    empty-handed I brought a suitcase filled
  • 00:13:14
    with lights solar powered
  • 00:13:17
lights and some phone chargers also and
  • 00:13:20
I wanted to distribute them among
  • 00:13:22
children and students why children and
  • 00:13:24
students because I believe that the
  • 00:13:25
Nobel Prize winner of the future needs
  • 00:13:27
light now the fact is that these kids go
  • 00:13:31
to school during the day then they come
  • 00:13:33
home they have to help out their parents
  • 00:13:34
    on the
  • 00:13:36
    land then the sun
  • 00:13:40
sets and they can do no
  • 00:13:43
homework so by giving them light from a
  • 00:13:47
    renewable
  • 00:13:49
resource you give them the power to
  • 00:13:51
    educate themselves and build a
  • 00:13:55
future I brought these lights to a
  • 00:13:57
number of villages such as this one
  • 00:14:01
Koo and in this particular Village I
  • 00:14:03
gave away 25 lights but I didn't give
  • 00:14:05
    them away for

free I wanted them to be worth something
  • 00:14:10
so I wanted something in exchange not
  • 00:14:12
    money I didn't want to have a payback I
  • 00:14:15
wanted to have a pay forward I wanted
  • 00:14:18
these kids to do something that their
  • 00:14:20
Community would benefit from so for
  • 00:14:23
every kid that received a light that kid
  • 00:14:26
would commit to plant a tree and
  • 00:14:29
    maintain
  • 00:14:31
it so that in turn the positive yield
  • 00:14:34
    would be
  • 00:14:36
larger that said and done one of the
  • 00:14:38
    villagers thought that wasn't
  • 00:14:41
enough so that afternoon he came to me
  • 00:14:44
    and he gave me his
  • 00:14:46
    sheep I named her
  • 00:14:49
Shawn and I decided not to eat
  • 00:14:54
her Shawn is doing very well in fact cuz
  • 00:14:57
    a few days ago I received a message M
  • 00:14:59
that Shawn had given birth to
  • 00:15:02
    Timmy I have two sheep
  • 00:15:06
now which means I've got to go
  • 00:15:11
    back and
  • 00:15:14
um as I was in theer I saw these stories
  • 00:15:17
    of
  • 00:15:19
    positivity amazing positivity that whole
  • 00:15:22
big change that we need that whole
  • 00:15:24
    transition is already
  • 00:15:27
happening I found found out for instance
  • 00:15:29
that the whole mobile network in N is
  • 00:15:32
powered by sunlight and as you can see
  • 00:15:36
sometimes one or two of these panels are
  • 00:15:38
    borrowed for other
  • 00:15:40
purposes the very first street Lighting
  • 00:15:43
in the town that I grew up in is powered
  • 00:15:46
    by the
  • 00:15:49
Sun so yes we found something
  • 00:15:54
better we are on that third option the
  • 00:15:56
    one that I liked good
  • 00:16:01
so to end this talk energy I believe is
  • 00:16:05
    a basic
  • 00:16:07
need nobody can go without therefore it
  • 00:16:11
    should be a basic
  • 00:16:13
    right my
  • 00:16:15
wish is to see if we can get clean
  • 00:16:20
    energy included in the Universal
  • 00:16:22
    Declaration of Human
  • 00:16:26
Rights and I know for a fact that every
  • 00:16:29
company every Energy company but even
  • 00:16:31
    every individual can reshape their
  • 00:16:34
business model in such a way that it
  • 00:16:37
    positively affects every
  • 00:16:40
stakeholder not only themselves not only
  • 00:16:43
    themselves and customers but themselves
  • 00:16:45
    as shareholders customers employees
  • 00:16:48
    employees families suppliers society and
  • 00:16:51
    the
  • 00:16:53
environment and in the end it's not our
  • 00:16:56
intentions that make the difference it's
  • 00:16:58
not our ideas that make the difference
  • 00:17:01
    yes our
  • 00:17:02
    actions thanks a
  • 00:17:07
    lot
