In this video, the creator demonstrates how to make Rick's portal gun from 'Rick and Morty'. The process begins with measuring and cutting a piece of cardboard for the main body, followed by creating side pieces and rounding the ends of the longest pieces. The handle is crafted from a cardboard tube, shaped to fit at a slight angle. A circular button is added on top of the handle, and the creator shares a mistake made with the number of lights, emphasizing the importance of accuracy. The small portal is made using hot glue to create swirling patterns, and a clear plastic bottle is repurposed for the dome. in today's video i'm going to show you
  • 00:00:02
how i made rick's trusty portal gun from
  • 00:00:04
    rick and morty
  • 00:00:07
    [Music]
  • 00:00:11
the first thing i did was measure out a
  • 00:00:13
five inch by three inch piece of card
  • 00:00:14
that will be the main body of the portal
  • 00:00:16
    gun
  • 00:00:16
    [Music]
  • 00:00:18
i cut it out and then drew around it to
  • 00:00:22
    make another
  • 00:00:27
the next thing i needed were the side
  • 00:00:28
    pieces
  • 00:00:30
i took some scrap pieces of card cut
  • 00:00:33
them down to one inch tall
  • 00:00:36
and then placed them up against the
  • 00:00:38
pieces i'd already made to get the
  • 00:00:39
    correct length
  • 00:00:46
now the ends on the two longest pieces
  • 00:00:48
need to be rounded off on one side
  • 00:00:50
before all the pieces can be glued
  • 00:00:52
    together
  • 00:00:53
    [Music]
  • 00:00:57
making sure that the front piece is
  • 00:00:58
    slightly inset
  • 00:01:15
to create the curve around the back i
  • 00:01:17
used a sheet of card which i cut to size
  • 00:01:21
    and then glued in place
  • 00:01:29
before using more card to neaten
  • 00:01:31
    everything up
  • 00:01:32
drawing around each side cutting it out
  • 00:01:36
    and gluing them in place
  • 00:01:46
    [Music]
  • 00:01:52
then the main body of the portal gun is
  • 00:01:53
    done
  • 00:01:56
to make the handle i just used a regular
  • 00:01:58
    cardboard tube
  • 00:01:59
i cut it up the middle and rolled it up
  • 00:02:01
tightly until it was the right size
  • 00:02:03
roughly one inch wide and four inches
  • 00:02:05
    tall
  • 00:02:07
to make sure it attaches correctly place
  • 00:02:09
    it against the main body
  • 00:02:10
draw around the curved edge to get the
  • 00:02:12
right angle do the same on the other
  • 00:02:14
    side
  • 00:02:14
and then cut them out test it and adjust
  • 00:02:16
the fit if you need to
  • 00:02:18
it's also worth noting that the handle
  • 00:02:19
doesn't sit straight in line with the
  • 00:02:20
    body
  • 00:02:21
it's at a slight 170 degree angle but go
  • 00:02:24
with whatever looks and feels right
  • 00:02:25
before gluing it in place for the large
  • 00:02:28
circular button that sits on the top of
  • 00:02:30
the handle it's nice and simple
  • 00:02:31
i drew a circle onto some corrugated
  • 00:02:33
    cardboard cut it out
  • 00:02:35
and attached but making the front lights
  • 00:02:38
is where i actually made a mistake
  • 00:02:39
i used a hot glue gun to carefully make
  • 00:02:41
the bulbs and i'm pretty happy with how
  • 00:02:42
    they turned out
  • 00:02:43
but there are only supposed to be three
  • 00:02:44
of them and i made four by accident
  • 00:02:47
i'm not too worried about it and it's
  • 00:02:48
something i might fix later but when you
  • 00:02:50
make yours you can make sure you don't
  • 00:02:51
    make my mistake
  • 00:02:53
to recreate the small portal that's
  • 00:02:54
contained within the dome on top of the
  • 00:02:56
gun i squeezed out ribbons of hot glue
  • 00:02:58
    onto a non-stick surface
  • 00:02:59
    creating random swirling portal-like
  • 00:03:01
patterns that could be glued together
  • 00:03:04
i waited for them to cool peeled them
  • 00:03:07
    off
  • 00:03:09
    and attached them together
  • 00:03:15
then i glued and rolled up a sheet of
  • 00:03:16
clear plastic around 1 inch tall for it
  • 00:03:18
    to stand on
  • 00:03:21
and because it's clear hopefully it
  • 00:03:22
should give the impression that it's
  • 00:03:23
floating as it does in the show
  • 00:03:29
for the glass dome that the mini portal
  • 00:03:31
sits in i found an old clear plastic
  • 00:03:32
bottle that was the perfect size
  • 00:03:35
i cut off the end and sanded it smooth
  • 00:03:48
now all that's left to do is bring
  • 00:03:49
everything together if you wanted to at
  • 00:03:51
this point you could add some lights
  • 00:03:53
but for now at long last we can finally
  • 00:03:55
    start painting
