Are you a Nurse Entrepreneur or Intrepreneur
الملخص

الجدول الزمني
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

- 00:00:44Nicole is a member of the international
- 00:00:47coaches Federation Nicole Welcome to the
- 00:00:51microphone thanks very much
- 00:00:54Sue so today what we're going to talk
- 00:00:57about is the concept of entrepreneurial
- 00:01:00ISM and how it can be um applied to our
- 00:01:04nursing
- 00:01:05careers really entrepreneurialism is
- 00:01:08about taking an opportunity and
- 00:01:10exploiting it either to our benefit or
- 00:01:13to our organization's benefit and then
- 00:01:15the last few um years there's been a
- 00:01:18concept that has developed about
- 00:01:20entrepreneurialism where we take an idea
- 00:01:23and exploit it for our own business game
- 00:01:26or intrapreneurial ISM where we exploit
- 00:01:29an idea for our organizational um
- 00:01:31organizations game either way whether
- 00:01:34you're doing it for your own business or
- 00:01:36somebody else's business the thought
- 00:01:38processes and the way in which our
- 00:01:41neural grooves are thinking is is
- 00:01:44distinctly an entrepreneurialism thought
- 00:01:47process and it's about exploiting an
- 00:01:50idea or an
- 00:01:51opportunity and that's about there's
- 00:01:54either you know you think one way or
- 00:01:56another you're either an entrepreneur
- 00:01:58and an ideas person or you're a career
- 00:02:02employee and you're excellent at
- 00:02:04executing somebody else's idea there's
- 00:02:06usually two types of people in the world
- 00:02:09for us um in our world there's not a lot
- 00:02:12of nurse entrepreneurs for whatever
- 00:02:15reason doctors in our world are
- 00:02:17exceptional at it they're running very
- 00:02:19profitable and very healthy private
- 00:02:22practices in surgeons in private
- 00:02:24emergency medicine in the Physicians and
- 00:02:29um pretty much every specialty that
- 00:02:31there is in medicine there is an way to
- 00:02:34exploit that opportunity for a private
- 00:02:36practice in their own business our wide
- 00:02:39Health practitioners are great at it
- 00:02:41again they either have the option of
- 00:02:42being career employees in the public or
- 00:02:45the private sector or they set up their
- 00:02:48own private clinics and you have
- 00:02:51optometrists having their own clinics
- 00:02:53and you've got obviously
- 00:02:55physiotherapists exercise physios um
- 00:02:58you've got um
- 00:03:00stal therapists and an an enormous body
- 00:03:05of Allied Health practitioners who are
- 00:03:06running their own clinics and practices
- 00:03:10and they're using those entrepreneurial
- 00:03:12ways to exploit an opportunity but in
- 00:03:15nursing it is actually pretty rare and
- 00:03:18it's more of a cultural thing than lack
- 00:03:21of opportunity it's just something that
- 00:03:23we're not taught to necessarily think in
- 00:03:25the way that entrepreneurs think and
- 00:03:28this is what this next hour is about is
- 00:03:32exploring who an entrepreneur is as
- 00:03:34opposed to who a career employee is and
- 00:03:37the traits of each of those categories
- 00:03:40and it will be the traits in terms of
- 00:03:42The Good the Bad and the Ugly for each
- 00:03:43of those the entrepreneur and the career
- 00:03:47employee and it will help you discern
- 00:03:49about where you intuitively sit where
- 00:03:52innately are you an entrepreneur who's
- 00:03:55actually trapped in a career employees
- 00:03:56body or are you very very happy being
- 00:03:59the career employee because that's
- 00:04:00certainly a perfectly exceptional way of
- 00:04:04carrying out your career the other thing
- 00:04:07is that this even if you are a career
- 00:04:10employee understanding how an
- 00:04:12entrepreneur thinks may give you the
- 00:04:14opportunity to leverage some great ideas
- 00:04:17and opportunities that you see in an
- 00:04:19entrepreneurial way and see how you
- 00:04:22might be able to exploit an idea or
- 00:04:24concept for your organization's benefit
- 00:04:27and start to think innovatively and it's
- 00:04:30a great way of um exploiting another
- 00:04:33Avenue of your career but within an
- 00:04:36organization so that's what we're going
- 00:04:37to cover today who is a career employee
- 00:04:40who is an entrepreneur and what do you
- 00:04:42need to do if you actually are an
- 00:04:44entrepreneur and you want to exploit
- 00:04:48that so first of all we're going to
- 00:04:50explore who the entrepreneur
- 00:04:53is so these are the characteristics of
- 00:04:56what an entrepreneur and it pretty much
- 00:04:58is Universal whether you're an engineer
- 00:05:02or whether you're an accountant or
- 00:05:04whether you're a plumber or whether
- 00:05:06you're a tech guy sitting there and
- 00:05:08you've come up with the next Facebook or
- 00:05:10the next Pokémon go these
- 00:05:13characteristics are the same whether
- 00:05:15you're a nurse or anything
- 00:05:17else entrepreneurs enjoy seeing
- 00:05:19something new and they really enjoy
- 00:05:22seeing and exploring whether it will
- 00:05:25succeed they like the
- 00:05:27unknown they thrive on being different
- 00:05:31they spend a great deal of energy on
- 00:05:33time proving themselves because there's
- 00:05:35a lot of doubt and a lot of people going
- 00:05:37that's stupid who's going to play
- 00:05:39Pokémon go and they spend a lot of time
- 00:05:42going I think lots of
- 00:05:44people for entrepreneurs few are truly
- 00:05:48successful in their entrepreneurial
- 00:05:50Adventures some are able to build
- 00:05:52incredibly strong businesses just and
- 00:05:55live an enormously wealthy life on the
- 00:05:58back of their idea
- 00:06:00another body are able to build a strong
- 00:06:03enough business to support themselves
- 00:06:05but most entrepreneurs fail in this
- 00:06:08endeavor and often entrepreneurs will
- 00:06:12try many a different iteration and many
- 00:06:14a different idea and many a different
- 00:06:17business plan business strategy and
- 00:06:19concept before they actually do find a
- 00:06:21successful one that's either successful
- 00:06:23enough just to be self- sustaining or
- 00:06:26incredibly
- 00:06:27profitable recogniz traits of the
- 00:06:30entrepreneur are usually things like
- 00:06:31they're really fast-paced they often
- 00:06:34work alone because other people can't
- 00:06:35really keep up with them because they
- 00:06:37tend to be a little bit sporadic in
- 00:06:38their thought process they are creative
- 00:06:42and they're creative in the sense of
- 00:06:43they're not too dissimilar to the artist
- 00:06:45in that very left of center thinking
- 00:06:49sometimes they're confident and perhaps
- 00:06:51they have confidence when there's no
- 00:06:53reason to be
- 00:06:55confident universally they are
- 00:06:57resourceful and they have an incredible
- 00:06:59knack for solving problems and they are
- 00:07:01always very persuasive they can convince
- 00:07:04others to trust them they can convince
- 00:07:06others to buy their ideas they can
- 00:07:08therefore convince other people to buy
- 00:07:10their products and services and at the
- 00:07:14other end they can build trust so that
- 00:07:17people invest in their
- 00:07:19idea for the entrepreneur common
- 00:07:21problems is that their business is often
- 00:07:23in crisis or they're in denial and
- 00:07:26they're Paralyzed by how overwhelmed
- 00:07:29they can be they're successful but often
- 00:07:32at a cost of too many working hours they
- 00:07:34struggle more for that need to feel um
- 00:07:38that judgment in then the counter the
- 00:07:41Judgment that they feel about that
- 00:07:43relates to their products their people
- 00:07:45and their methods they're always
- 00:07:47starting something new the bright shiny
- 00:07:49object syndrome is profound with this
- 00:07:51particular group they're frustrated and
- 00:07:54bored by the administration side of
- 00:07:56their business their relationship with
- 00:07:58their product or their Serv service is
- 00:08:00often quite skewed they either overvalue
- 00:08:02or they undervalue their
- 00:08:05product they're motivated by things like
- 00:08:08dissatisfaction with the way things are
- 00:08:09currently done just because that's the
- 00:08:11way we've always done it doesn't
- 00:08:13necessarily mean it's a good idea to
- 00:08:15continue with it and that
- 00:08:17dissatisfaction is the mother of their
- 00:08:20creation they love new things new ideas
- 00:08:23new methods products Services anything
- 00:08:26that's new is fascinating to them they
- 00:08:29incredibly motivated by their need for
- 00:08:31achievement and recognition and they're
- 00:08:33often very motivated by that need to
- 00:08:35prove something because so many people
- 00:08:37have said no just just do what everybody
- 00:08:40else does and go to work and have a job
- 00:08:42and they want to prove that there's an
- 00:08:44opportunity to do things quite
- 00:08:46differently to the way that other people
- 00:08:48have done
- 00:08:50them that's in contrast to who the
- 00:08:53career employee
- 00:08:55is the nature of the career employee is
- 00:08:59that you work for someone and you work
- 00:09:02to achieve their Vision their idea their
- 00:09:06goal and their big
- 00:09:08picture usually a career employee varies
- 00:09:11in their level of responsibility and
- 00:09:13Authority but irrespective of who you
- 00:09:16are and what job you do as a career
- 00:09:18employee you are managed and supervised
- 00:09:21by someone else whether you're the
- 00:09:23cleaner or whether you're the CEO you
- 00:09:26are still managed by the board and the
- 00:09:28board is still managed by the
- 00:09:30shareholders so it just goes around and
- 00:09:33goes around irrespective of whatever
- 00:09:35role you hold in an organization as an
- 00:09:37employee you are supervised and you are
- 00:09:40managed often career employees there is
- 00:09:44a distinction between working hard and
- 00:09:46producing results there are lots of
- 00:09:49people that can toil away unnecessarily
- 00:09:52and they're working hard and they're The
- 00:09:54Little Engine That Could but they're not
- 00:09:56actually delivering anything whereas
- 00:09:59there are a lot of employees that are
- 00:10:01producing results and that they not
- 00:10:03necessarily working all that hard but
- 00:10:05ultimately their performance and their
- 00:10:08remuneration isn't necessarily linked
- 00:10:11with each other and it depends on the
- 00:10:12way in which you're employed but where
- 00:10:14an entrepreneur is absolutely rewarded
- 00:10:17for the results that they produce a
- 00:10:21career employee quite conversely might
- 00:10:24work hard they might produce results but
- 00:10:27irrespective they pay whatever it is
- 00:10:30that they get
- 00:10:31paid recognizable traits about the
- 00:10:34career employee things like they are
- 00:10:36usually linear that's not so relevant
- 00:10:39for nurses nursing career employee
- 00:10:42aren't necessarily linear we're able to
- 00:10:44think very broadly and very promptly
- 00:10:48about what's going on in our setting
- 00:10:50with different patients and clients and
- 00:10:52demands that are going on but for the
- 00:10:55general career employee they're usually
- 00:10:57very linear thinkers they start at the
- 00:10:59beginning of a project and they work
- 00:11:00towards
- 00:11:02completion very task orientated that is
- 00:11:05something inherently recognizable about
- 00:11:07nursing as we move away from that
- 00:11:10thought process still we are often quite
- 00:11:13task
- 00:11:15orientated as career employees the
- 00:11:18career employee is focused on doing
- 00:11:20things the right way this is the way we
- 00:11:22do it this is the protocol this is the
- 00:11:24procedure this is the policy this is the
- 00:11:26standing operated procedure whereas in
- 00:11:30entrepreneurs turn that on its head and
- 00:11:32do things completely conversely to the
- 00:11:35way that it's historically been
- 00:11:37done again compensation may not be
- 00:11:39linked to Performance career employees
- 00:11:42are inherently implementers and they are
- 00:11:45doers and not necessarily the ideas
- 00:11:47people but where the ideas people can't
- 00:11:49execute the career employee does an
- 00:11:52excellent job of executing their vision
- 00:11:54and they're able to deliver what the
- 00:11:56entrepreneur and the ideas person
- 00:11:58necessarily can
- 00:12:00not often they're a coordinator and
- 00:12:03they're always dependent and always
- 00:12:05reactive in their
- 00:12:07role common problems that the career
- 00:12:10employee um experiences and again this
- 00:12:14is universal but for um us in our
- 00:12:17nursing world is that the organization
- 00:12:21or for us the hospital um or Healthcare
- 00:12:23delivery service can often be
- 00:12:26reorganizing and Ever Changing and the
- 00:12:29career employee needs a strategy for
- 00:12:31always protecting their job and
- 00:12:33protecting their status quo and
- 00:12:35protecting the way in which we've always
- 00:12:37done things so that we can continue to
- 00:12:39deliver and we've definitely seen that
- 00:12:41in nursing and how our role has changed
- 00:12:44and we have given away certain
- 00:12:45responsibilities to Allied health
- 00:12:47professionals that were were inherently
- 00:12:49nursing roles so we're ever protecting
- 00:12:52what we do and who we are and what we
- 00:12:55represent the career employee recognizes
- 00:12:58that their philosophy
- 00:12:59May no longer be a fit within
- 00:13:01organization and that can be a
- 00:13:03significant problem for them because
- 00:13:05what they believe and particularly for
- 00:13:07us in nursing world what we believe is
- 00:13:09right for the patient and what we
- 00:13:11believe might be right in the way
- 00:13:13forward may not necessarily be lined
- 00:13:15with what the hospital wants or in the
- 00:13:17direction that they're going and
- 00:13:19certainly in organizations that are for
- 00:13:21profit I hear that a lot when I talk to
- 00:13:23nurses that you know the career employee
- 00:13:26says my hospital is always talking about
- 00:13:28money I'm not in the money I just want
- 00:13:30to deliver great patient
- 00:13:32care and that grind between the values
- 00:13:36and the Visions starts to have an impact
- 00:13:39on whether you want to be a part of that
- 00:13:41organization and their Vision any
- 00:13:43longer career employees are motivated by
- 00:13:46security they want to know that they're
- 00:13:48going to get paid every fort night on a
- 00:13:50Wednesday the entrepreneurial Spirit
- 00:13:52doesn't have any of that security I
- 00:13:54might get paid this month and not that
- 00:13:56month but the career employee needs that
- 00:13:59security and know that they have a job
- 00:14:02and they've got a lot of constructs and
- 00:14:05Industrial relations and Human Resources
- 00:14:07around them to support them and secure
- 00:14:09them in the world in which they want to
- 00:14:11live they're motivated by the sense of
- 00:14:14achievement and they're motivated Often
- 00:14:16by
- 00:14:20advancement so for us we need to work
- 00:14:24out if if you actually are have heard
- 00:14:27those um um two definitions of what an
- 00:14:31entrepreneur is and what a career
- 00:14:32employee is and you're starting to hear
- 00:14:35some bells ringing for yourself to think
- 00:14:38I'm a entrepreneur trapped in a career
- 00:14:40employes body then how you're going to
- 00:14:44exploit that needs to start taking shape
- 00:14:47in your head so that you can exploit it
- 00:14:50for your own gain and that may be
- 00:14:52financial and it may be just simply job
- 00:14:55satisfaction but irrespective that
- 00:14:57realization that you've got some of
- 00:14:59those traits they're not going to go
- 00:15:01away and you need to for your own sanity
- 00:15:05and your own satisfaction be able to use
- 00:15:07them for good instead of
- 00:15:09evil so the way these are the ways in
- 00:15:12which you might be able to exploit those
- 00:15:15and it's not necessarily starting a
- 00:15:16business tomorrow um but it's still ways
- 00:15:19that you can use those
- 00:15:21skills and that's what I talked about
- 00:15:23from the very um beginning of this is
- 00:15:25that the entrepreneur is someone who
- 00:15:27takes a great idea and builds their own
- 00:15:29own business to make it profitable
- 00:15:31whereas sometimes there's simply the
- 00:15:33entrepreneur that they still want the
- 00:15:35security and they still want the
- 00:15:37opportunity for advancement but they do
- 00:15:40have some of those those skill sets so
- 00:15:43an entrepreneur will take a really great
- 00:15:45idea and make it profitable and
- 00:15:46successful for their
- 00:15:48organization and in fact how to leverage
- 00:15:51that is something that I've spoken
- 00:15:52recently about in another webinar about
- 00:15:55how you might use those um thought
- 00:15:57processes for a career dis disruption
- 00:16:01and how you might work through that from
- 00:16:03a step-by-step
- 00:16:05basis but irrespective of whether you're
- 00:16:08looking to exploit an idea for your
- 00:16:09financial gain or for your organizations
- 00:16:12the facts are that this is about finding
- 00:16:15a problem to
- 00:16:17solve any business that has been
- 00:16:19successful in any Market that you look
- 00:16:22at is about solving a problem they've
- 00:16:24solved a problem that people want to pay
- 00:16:25money to have solved and they will pay
- 00:16:28it and The Business business is
- 00:16:29successful and that's how you're going
- 00:16:31to build your solution and that's how
- 00:16:32you're going to build your
- 00:16:35Innovation so if you were thinking about
- 00:16:39right I'm a bit of an entrepreneur what
- 00:16:41does that mean then you need to have a
- 00:16:44look at what problems you were solving
- 00:16:45and like we talked about last time in
- 00:16:47career disruption you need to have a
- 00:16:49look in your own um Health Care backyard
- 00:16:53to see what opportunities May lie
- 00:16:54because you already have a significant
- 00:16:56body of knowledge here and you could go
- 00:16:58and own Baskin and Robin's ice cream
- 00:17:00store but that's not something that you
- 00:17:03know a lot about but you do know a great
- 00:17:05deal about Healthcare
- 00:17:07delivery so if we take a snapshot of
- 00:17:09what's going on in our current health
- 00:17:11care today then problems that we need to
- 00:17:14solve are things like this we have a
- 00:17:17considerable growth in chronic disease
- 00:17:20we have a considerable growth in our
- 00:17:21aging
- 00:17:22population the stability and decline in
- 00:17:25our community needing acute care
- 00:17:27services is rapidly declining and that
- 00:17:30need is now moving across out of acute
- 00:17:33care into primary care and in community
- 00:17:36care and in home care we have a
- 00:17:40declining Workforce there is a greater
- 00:17:42need on the training Pipeline and
- 00:17:45arguably International recruitment than
- 00:17:46we've ever needed
- 00:17:48before there is a changing models of
- 00:17:51funding changing models of care so that
- 00:17:53we can do more for less and
- 00:17:55geographically across our country
- 00:17:57Australians have ever increasing
- 00:17:59challenges about accessing the care that
- 00:18:02they need particularly in the rural and
- 00:18:03the remote where they are need they have
- 00:18:06the same Healthcare needs as we have in
- 00:18:08Metropolitan Sydney but a smidgen of the
- 00:18:13resources that the same have in those
- 00:18:15sort of
- 00:18:16areas those problems are opportunities
- 00:18:21and they opportunities to exploit and
- 00:18:23there are opportunities that people are
- 00:18:25exploiting already to leverage as they
- 00:18:28entrepreneurial ways entail so that they
- 00:18:31can exploit that to make profit for
- 00:18:34themselves or for their
- 00:18:36organization and again even in your own
- 00:18:39specialty not necessarily broadly from
- 00:18:41the whole of Australia you might see in
- 00:18:44your own specialty in your own backyard
- 00:18:47where there are problems that need to be
- 00:18:50solved I'm from a traditional acute care
- 00:18:52background myself and there are enormous
- 00:18:55unmet needs in the hospitals that I have
- 00:18:57worked in every single day we
- 00:19:00continuously have problems with patient
- 00:19:01flow we continuously have problems with
- 00:19:04ambulance uh ramping and access block
- 00:19:08our Fe weit times can be enormous we
- 00:19:11have delayed discharge which is even
- 00:19:13worsening our problems with access block
- 00:19:16and intern ambulance ramping length of
- 00:19:18stay with patients staying longer is
- 00:19:21becoming
- 00:19:22problematic we have patients which which
- 00:19:25have far more complex needs now than
- 00:19:27they used to 20 or 30 years ago gone of
- 00:19:30the single disease diagnosis where
- 00:19:32someone comes in for their
- 00:19:34appendicectomy now they come with their
- 00:19:36appendectomy at 99 years of age with
- 00:19:39every comorbidity Under the Sun and have
- 00:19:42acute confusion and now can't go home
- 00:19:45for 58 days and they should have been in
- 00:19:49overnight we've got blocks to Community
- 00:19:51Care which is increasing our length of
- 00:19:53stay and the everchanging conversation
- 00:19:57about budget blowouts
- 00:19:59all of these problems present an
- 00:20:01opportunity where we have expert
- 00:20:04knowledge and we have expert um
- 00:20:07opportunities and we have expert
- 00:20:09networks where if we are finding that we
- 00:20:12have a Synergy and those traits around
- 00:20:15the entrepreneur start to resonate with
- 00:20:17us where there is fertile ground for us
- 00:20:20to exploit
- 00:20:23that by way of example I'll give you a
- 00:20:27case study of a nurse who done just that
- 00:20:31um but first by uh there are lots of
- 00:20:33examples there's a website that um is
- 00:20:37that showcases exactly what nurses do in
- 00:20:41terms of um opportunities that they have
- 00:20:44exploited and there are some really
- 00:20:46really great examples and these are not
- 00:20:48necessarily All American or the website
- 00:20:51that I refer to as American some of
- 00:20:53these examples are nurses that have
- 00:20:56exploited an idea that they've come
- 00:20:58cross found a niche need and made a very
- 00:21:02profitable business some of them are
- 00:21:04multinational companies and some of them
- 00:21:07just support their lifestyle know more
- 00:21:10than what nursing did but they have
- 00:21:12control over their own world and it's
- 00:21:14more Synergy with who they are as a
- 00:21:17person there's a website called pocket
- 00:21:20nurse that was started by a nurse pocket
- 00:21:23nurse.com and this particular nurse
- 00:21:25sells around
- 00:21:27$85,000 um 8 and a half thousand
- 00:21:29different products that are specifically
- 00:21:32designed for nurses watches stethoscopes
- 00:21:37scrubs pencil belts all sorts of things
- 00:21:40shoes um theater attire whole range of
- 00:21:44things that are just perfect to solve
- 00:21:46nurses problems that they experience
- 00:21:48every single
- 00:21:49day amren.com disseminates forensic
- 00:21:53information and resources to those who
- 00:21:55work in the forensic field
- 00:21:58uniforms proper is a scrub supplier that
- 00:22:01was started by a nurse First Choice

- 00:22:06that was um started by a nurse and it's
- 00:22:09simply providing agency nurses to acute
- 00:22:12hospitals and Subacute Healthcare
- 00:22:14delivery service Karen bom.com is an
- 00:22:19internationally recognized expert and

- 00:22:29nurse and a shift worker in a

- 00:23:08net.au is started by a local Brisbane
- 00:23:11nurse who saw a need for child care
- 00:23:14centers and parents of young children
- 00:23:17who had no idea about how to resuscitate
- 00:23:20their child in the event that the worst
- 00:23:22case scenario happened and she runs a
- 00:23:26business across the entire Eastern seab
- 00:23:28board of Australia where she teaches
- 00:23:31Child Care Centers and parents how to do
- 00:23:34CPR there are stal therapists out there
- 00:23:37that are running very successful
- 00:23:39businesses delivering care ICU in the
- 00:23:43home is a Melbourne uh nurse that
- 00:23:45started a long-term ICU ventilated
- 00:23:49patient care service so that those
- 00:23:51patients didn't have to be
- 00:23:52institutionalized
- 00:23:54anymore there is an enormous body of
- 00:23:56Home Care home birth midwives that are
- 00:23:58in private practice and then there's
- 00:24:01organizations like jees angels.com
- 00:24:03that's providing support to adult
- 00:24:05children who are trying to navigate an
- 00:24:08incredibly complex Health Care system
- 00:24:09for their aging parents an amazingly
- 00:24:12Niche area that specifically targets
- 00:24:17children that just are accountants and
- 00:24:19their lawyers and their cleaners and
- 00:24:22their their child care workers and they
- 00:24:26have no idea when their aging parent
- 00:24:28gets sick what doctors to go to what any
- 00:24:31what x-rays mean why they need an MRI
- 00:24:34how to get care for their parent never
- 00:24:36even thought about any of that and she
- 00:24:38set up a business so that she could just
- 00:24:40help adult children navigate the Health
- 00:24:43Care system not delivering care just
- 00:24:45helping them understand
- 00:24:47it conversely that brings me to Linda
- 00:24:51delot um she did her nursing training
- 00:24:54here in Brisbane at the rural Brisbane
- 00:24:55in the late 80s and worked as an irn in
- 00:24:58a iety of roles throughout Queensland
- 00:25:00and New South Wales for about 15 years
- 00:25:03just from in her words a gun variety RN
- 00:25:07doing what we all
- 00:25:10do after her kids were a bit older she
- 00:25:12went back to tertiary education and her
- 00:25:15career diverted into the corporate world
- 00:25:17oddly and to her surprise where she
- 00:25:19actually took on a human and and human
- 00:25:22resources and business management
- 00:25:24roles after 2009 she graduated with an
- 00:25:27MBA and a year after that decided to
- 00:25:30combine her business and her nursing
- 00:25:32experience to create a business and
- 00:25:34that's called your home care your home
- 00:25:37care is a company that provides
- 00:25:39personalized support to children and
- 00:25:40adults with very complex disability and
- 00:25:43mental health needs to enable them to
- 00:25:45live quality of life your home care
- 00:25:48employs personal carers and right
- 00:25:50through up to registered nurses and
- 00:25:53provide continuity care to clients as
- 00:25:56their needs change as their health care
- 00:25:58needs
- 00:25:59change after establishing that 5 years
- 00:26:02ago liinda managed an saw an incredible
- 00:26:05growth in her your home care business
- 00:26:08with service delivered delivered through
- 00:26:10all of Southeast Queensland and she
- 00:26:13expands ever each year on year as that
- 00:26:16demand
- 00:26:18Rises Linda saw that there was a massive
- 00:26:21need for Community Care and home care
- 00:26:24because we were moving away from our
- 00:26:25needs in in acute care she saw that
- 00:26:28opportunity very early on and she saw at
- 00:26:32the beginning the increasing chronic
- 00:26:34disease and aging population and saw
- 00:26:37that as an
- 00:26:38opportunity in
- 00:26:402015 these things aren't necessarily a
- 00:26:43surprise but in 2009 it was definitely
- 00:26:46something that we would have all gone hm
- 00:26:49really is that really going to be a
- 00:26:51thing and she has seen enormous
- 00:26:54opportunity and she has um Untold growth
- 00:26:57in that se
- 00:26:58sector it's a perfect example where that
- 00:27:01entrepreneurial Spirit was constantly
- 00:27:04knocking on the door and she saw an
- 00:27:06opportunity and she exploited that
- 00:27:09opportunity to for her gain but also She
- 00:27:13is delivering amazing client care in the
- 00:27:16community in the way that she wants it
- 00:27:19to be seen and find finds that
- 00:27:21incredibly
- 00:27:22fulfilling she's a perfect example of
- 00:27:25someone who saw a problem as an
- 00:27:27opportunity
- 00:27:29and it's probably one of the most
- 00:27:30notable characteristics about
- 00:27:32entrepreneurs as opposed to Career
- 00:27:34employees and professionals is that they
- 00:27:37universally see challenges as
- 00:27:40opportunities entrepreneurs are early
- 00:27:43adopters and they easily adopt massive
- 00:27:46problems but intuitively see it as an
- 00:27:49opportunity the career employee in the
- 00:27:51traditional nursing Mo role tend to see
- 00:27:54their workload for example as a massive
- 00:27:57problem and career employees are
- 00:27:59generally talking a lot about their
- 00:28:02workload particularly in the clinical
- 00:28:04setting but they really see that as an
- 00:28:07opportunity they see it as a
- 00:28:10problem entrepreneurs deal with the
- 00:28:12exact same workload issues their
- 00:28:14workload in fact is enormous to the
- 00:28:17point where they're working to their
- 00:28:19detriment um long long long hours and
- 00:28:23often seven days a week but they often
- 00:28:26language it quite differently they see
- 00:28:28their workload as and they use terms
- 00:28:31like capacity constraint they realize
- 00:28:33that if they're working 20 hours a day
- 00:28:35and they're generating revenue for that
- 00:28:3620 hours a day seven days a week then
- 00:28:39they've maxed out their capacity and
- 00:28:41they need to do something about that so
- 00:28:43they start to think about how they might
- 00:28:45delegate and en and and employ people in
- 00:28:49certain capacities so that they can free
- 00:28:51up their time so that they have more
- 00:28:54capacity to build the business whereas a
- 00:28:57career employee
- 00:28:59struggles through and pushes through and
- 00:29:01doesn't necessarily come up with the
- 00:29:03ideas about how to continue through and
- 00:29:06solve those
- 00:29:07problems it's definitely career um
- 00:29:10entrepreneurs have an intuitive sense of
- 00:29:13working smarter not
- 00:29:15harder and it's in it's a quite distinct
- 00:29:18characteristic for
- 00:29:20them the other thing about entrepreneurs
- 00:29:23is that they've generally learned a
- 00:29:25lesson that per Perfection is the enemy
- 00:29:29of progress and it's something that's
- 00:29:31also quite unique to
- 00:29:33entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs while
- 00:29:36they're busy if they were very very
- 00:29:38committed to Crossing every T and
- 00:29:40dotting every single eye that they have
- 00:29:43so that they could perfect the ideal
- 00:29:46product or service that they want to get
- 00:29:48out and sell so that they can leverage
- 00:29:51it to build a business it means very
- 00:29:53likely that they're going to miss the
- 00:29:55market and someone else is going to have
- 00:29:56moved in and picked up all their market
- 00:29:59share entrepreneurs tend to go to market
- 00:30:04with what they call minimal viable
- 00:30:06product it is the bare minimum and
- 00:30:08sometimes it's not even functional they
- 00:30:10might go to the Apple store to sell an
- 00:30:14app with something that is barely
- 00:30:16functional but they want to put it out
- 00:30:18there with minimal expense and minimal
- 00:30:21time so that they can see if is anyone
- 00:30:22going to buy this thing and if they are
- 00:30:25then we'll put what we need to put into
- 00:30:26it
- 00:30:28the and it's often and in fact it's
- 00:30:32rarely the best version of the product
- 00:30:34that it can be but it delivers value
- 00:30:38that's their measure of success does it
- 00:30:39deliver value does it make someone's
- 00:30:41life better than it is today is it
- 00:30:43everything it could be no but it does
- 00:30:45have some function and offers some
- 00:30:48value career employees and in particular
- 00:30:52nurses have an incredible commitment to
- 00:30:55best patient outcomes and the patient
- 00:30:58care and it's a black and white scenario
- 00:31:01if it's not the best care that it can be
- 00:31:04or their team is not the best care that
- 00:31:06it could be then we have no business
- 00:31:08delivering it
- 00:31:10care of course in our setting we want to
- 00:31:13be delivering everything that we can and
- 00:31:15it's incumbent upon us to do
- 00:31:17that but nurses as career employees
- 00:31:20carry the weight of the world on their
- 00:31:22shoulders and feel like the best care is
- 00:31:24the only care entrepreneurs however get
- 00:31:27out there and they take a risk and for
- 00:31:30many it can be poorly planned and it can
- 00:31:32be poorly executed and so there's often
- 00:31:34failures and iterations and moving on to
- 00:31:37something that's more
- 00:31:39successful it may not be as good as it's
- 00:31:41going to be in two or five years but
- 00:31:43they've still helped people and they've
- 00:31:45solved a problem I imagine for Linda
- 00:31:48when she started and the care that she
- 00:31:49was delivering to the her clients in the
- 00:31:53community the way the in which that it
- 00:31:55is done now is not the way that it was
- 00:31:58done back there and that the systems and
- 00:32:01processes are unbelievable compared to
- 00:32:03how she
- 00:32:05started but she was still adding value
- 00:32:07and she was still delivering Safe Care
- 00:32:10it just wasn't the best care as it can
- 00:32:12be compared to as today but it met some
- 00:32:16Bare Basics and some some minimums that
- 00:32:18it was these patients were getting a
- 00:32:20better quality of life because she was a
- 00:32:22part of their
- 00:32:23Journey nurses of course need to deliver
- 00:32:26safe care and that's a non-negotiable
- 00:32:28but realizing that a thing moves and
- 00:32:30improves is something to be celebrated
- 00:32:33and not treated like a failure looking
- 00:32:36for where an example um where people
- 00:32:38have delivered a a solution that wasn't
- 00:32:41the best can to be can be seen
- 00:32:42everywhere in our particularly in our
- 00:32:44Acute Care Service the way in which we
- 00:32:47deal with an appendicitis today is
- 00:32:50vastly different to how we dealt with it
- 00:32:52in
- 00:32:531942 and it's not necessarily that it
- 00:32:55was wrong then it's just that things
- 00:32:57evolved back then it was a minimal
- 00:32:59viable product and we've learned them
- 00:33:01we've grown and if we didn't treat it
- 00:33:05back then because it wasn't everything
- 00:33:06that it was going to be then a lot of
- 00:33:09people would have suffered for it so
- 00:33:11entrepreneurs have an incredible ability
- 00:33:13to see that Perfection is the enemy of
- 00:33:19progress
- 00:33:21similarly they make mistakes a lot of
- 00:33:25them and they have a lot of very tough
- 00:33:29lessons to learn when you're on this
- 00:33:31entrepreneurial
- 00:33:32journey and they've learned that M
- 00:33:35mistakes are healthy that's actually
- 00:33:36where the growth is that's where your
- 00:33:38stretch zone is career employees treat
- 00:33:42and them and carry their mistakes like a
- 00:33:44personal
- 00:33:45failure in Industries such as um
- 00:33:48software development the experts in that
- 00:33:51field adopt a seven-step process where
- 00:33:54they start right through to where they
- 00:33:57finish the start seven steps to where
- 00:33:59they finish they recognize that there
- 00:34:01are seven iterations of a product from
- 00:34:04beta to completed from concept to
- 00:34:08perfected we actually have the same
- 00:34:11model in our own nursing industry if we
- 00:34:15take Patricia Benner's model and her
- 00:34:17work where she identified and defined
- 00:34:20nurses how we transition from novice to
- 00:34:22expert and we might apply the same
- 00:34:25thinking that there are four or five
- 00:34:28iterations and inherently those
- 00:34:31iterations come with mistakes where we
- 00:34:34transition from being a novice to an
- 00:34:36advanced beginner to an intermediate to
- 00:34:39an
- 00:34:40expert on every single given nursing
- 00:34:42function that we perform and of all of
- 00:34:45the time that I've spent with nurses
- 00:34:47through education or or management or
- 00:34:50talking and coaching with nurses they
- 00:34:52all tell me that with each stage that
- 00:34:55they progress to be the expert that they
- 00:34:57are today is peppered with their
- 00:34:59mistakes and not necessarily with their
- 00:35:01failures it is a fundamentally
- 00:35:04entrepreneurial thought process that we
- 00:35:07do own our mistakes and see that's where
- 00:35:10our growth and learning happened and
- 00:35:12entrepreneurialism is exactly the same
- 00:35:15when you step out there and you take on
- 00:35:17this opportunity and you exploit it for
- 00:35:19your benefit then where you learn and
- 00:35:23where you progress and where you iterate
- 00:35:25to make this amazing thing that you
- 00:35:27never thought of from in the beginning
- 00:35:29comes from the mistakes that we make
- 00:35:32carrying them as failure will be toxic
- 00:35:36and entrepreneurial nurses rethink those
- 00:35:39mistakes and see them to get them closer
- 00:35:41to the perfect solution and the perfect
- 00:35:44Sol service and the perfect
- 00:35:49product one thing that again the nursing
- 00:35:54career employee and the entrepreneur
- 00:35:56have in incredible similarity and
- 00:35:59Synergy with is the concept of
- 00:36:02discipline it takes enormous discipline
- 00:36:05and tenacity and determination to stay
- 00:36:08the course and start up a business
- 00:36:11nurses possess a level of discipline in
- 00:36:14in that in as a career employee that I
- 00:36:17believe I'm unlikely to ever see at the
- 00:36:20same level an execution in any other
- 00:36:23industry the nurses that I know and have
- 00:36:26educated and have managed over 15 20
- 00:36:29years are truly committed and harder
- 00:36:31working than is probably good for their
- 00:36:33own
- 00:36:34health nurse entrepreneurs take that
- 00:36:37exact passion that they have and the
- 00:36:40discipline that they have but they just
- 00:36:43take it that one step further in that
- 00:36:45they see that maybe the care that we're
- 00:36:48delivering isn't exactly the way I would
- 00:36:51do it if I had total control and I want
- 00:36:53to see it and feel it and know it
- 00:36:56differently to how it is being done
- 00:36:58before and that's the
- 00:37:01next iteration is that I know what I'm
- 00:37:05doing I know how to deliver great care
- 00:37:07I'm committed to having exceptional
- 00:37:09patient outcomes now I want to do it for
- 00:37:11myself to know that I can do it better
- 00:37:14and they take total control over the
- 00:37:15outcomes that they're able to deliver P
- 00:37:18to patients in whatever form that might
- 00:37:21take in an education business or a care
- 00:37:24delivery business or in the many ations
- 00:37:28that they have for exploiting a business
- 00:37:32and exploiting an idea and solving a
- 00:37:34problem if you own a home care agency
- 00:37:37like Linda does then you're able to
- 00:37:39control everything that goes with that
- 00:37:41for the clients that you have and for
- 00:37:44any nurse that's
- 00:37:45appealing without any restriction of the
- 00:37:48bureaucracy and the funding and the
- 00:37:50politicking that we do see every day in
- 00:37:52our world then you're able to apply that
- 00:37:55to your discipline to your group of
- 00:37:57clients and patients that you have in
- 00:37:59your business in your own little patch
- 00:38:02of the healthcare World your cognitive
- 00:38:04processes are innately different and
- 00:38:07therefore your actions around what
- 00:38:08problems that you have are also innately
- 00:38:11different simply as a result of having
- 00:38:13complete control of how health care is
- 00:38:15delivered to your people we already have
- 00:38:18the discipline around that that's the
- 00:38:20nature of what we do as registered nurse
- 00:38:22every day but entrepreneurial nurses
- 00:38:25take it that step further now they take
- 00:38:27that discipline so that they can take
- 00:38:29control and complete control of Health
- 00:38:32Care
- 00:38:35outcomes there the sorts
- 00:38:38of
- 00:38:40um qualities and I guess innate sense of
- 00:38:44um what a career employee is as opposed
- 00:38:46to an entrepreneur but usually when
- 00:38:49people are get to this phase of had this
- 00:38:52conversation about who they are an
- 00:38:54entrepreneur or whether they're a um a
- 00:38:57career employee the fear starts to kick
- 00:38:59in so they're actually starting to think
- 00:39:02I might have some ENT entrepreneurial
- 00:39:04streaks that are running through me but
- 00:39:06the fear of what that means in terms
- 00:39:10of starting a new business is incredibly
- 00:39:14terrifying so they start to things think
- 00:39:17about things like what do I need to know
- 00:39:20um and what do I need to have that I
- 00:39:22don't have right
- 00:39:24now and so one of the things that you
- 00:39:26have is there some if you're going to be
- 00:39:29a business owner and start up this thing
- 00:39:31then there are some qualities above and
- 00:39:34beyond just being an an entrepreneurial
- 00:39:37and creative spirit that you do need to
- 00:39:40have and According to fors which is a
- 00:39:43well-respected website that does a great
- 00:39:45job of business
- 00:39:47writing is that they um talk about eight
- 00:39:51key qualities that you need to have in
- 00:39:54terms of um the journey to
- 00:39:59entrepreneurialism
- 00:40:00so one is
- 00:40:04resiliency
- 00:40:06um are you able to cope with the roller
- 00:40:09coaster of the ups and downs that small
- 00:40:12business
- 00:40:13is the second is focus there is a
- 00:40:18sizable Gap it is a dip between this
- 00:40:22great idea that you have that keeps you
- 00:40:24up at night you're so excited about it
- 00:40:26and the thriving business at the other
- 00:40:28end and simply maintaining the
- 00:40:30concentration through that dip is beyond
- 00:40:33what most human beings are capable of
- 00:40:35it's tough It's fraught with self-doubt
- 00:40:38and it can be actually really really
- 00:40:40tedious what's more is that there are so
- 00:40:43many bright shiny objects of promise and
- 00:40:45potential along the way that it can be
- 00:40:48really hard to stay on message and stay
- 00:40:52true to the vision that you had when you
- 00:40:54were lying awake or night with this idea
- 00:40:56of this Home Care agent in your neck of
- 00:40:58the woods and then all of a sudden you
- 00:41:00start to think maybe I'm should just do
- 00:41:02shopping for people at home and not do
- 00:41:04this nursing thing and all of these
- 00:41:07clouds of self-doubt and other ideas and
- 00:41:10other opportunities come along the way
- 00:41:12and it's incredibly
- 00:41:14distracting the very nature of the
- 00:41:17entrepreneur is to be attracted to the
- 00:41:19new and the fun so staying true to an
- 00:41:22original concept can be nigh on
- 00:41:24impossible for the entrepreneurial
- 00:41:26spirit
- 00:41:29the third is investing in the long term
- 00:41:32again the entrepreneurial spirit is a
- 00:41:33creative it is an artist at heart and
- 00:41:37not innately about the
- 00:41:39unforeseeable overnight success can be a
- 00:41:43two to sevene journey and sometimes at
- 00:41:45best being able to stop and eat this
- 00:41:48elephant one bite at a time can be very
- 00:41:51very
- 00:41:53difficult finding the right people and
- 00:41:56managing those people
- 00:41:58is difficult nurses actually come with
- 00:42:00this skill intuitively by nature of what
- 00:42:02we do we don't think we do but our role
- 00:42:05is about managing situations risk and
- 00:42:08delegating tasks we are excellent
- 00:42:10excellent
- 00:42:12managers but the mental leap from when
- 00:42:14we're doing it in our own business and
- 00:42:16the technicalities of paying people in
- 00:42:18HR and Industrial relations and all of
- 00:42:21that can be very
- 00:42:24challenging number five is is cell
- 00:42:28and I think this for nurses is the
- 00:42:32hardest we do this
- 00:42:35dreadfully not necessarily because we're
- 00:42:37bad at it I think just psychologically
- 00:42:40it is so foreign to what we do that it
- 00:42:43just doesn't sit well with our very core
- 00:42:47gut there isn't a single skill in our
- 00:42:50native nursing world that is
- 00:42:52transferable to Skilling selling worse
- 00:42:55we have a core belief that everyone in
- 00:42:57our healthare world is entitled to the
- 00:42:59same health care whether your public or
- 00:43:00private or overseas or a refugee whoever
- 00:43:03you are you should get health
- 00:43:05care if you now put yourself in a
- 00:43:08position where you own a home care
- 00:43:10agency and you can see someone who
- 00:43:12desperately needs the skills and the
- 00:43:14resources that you have but they need to
- 00:43:16pay you for it and if they're not going
- 00:43:18to pay you for it then they can't have
- 00:43:20it and they just can't afford it that's
- 00:43:23incredibly difficult we desperately want
- 00:43:25to give away our knowledge and our
- 00:43:26skills to people in need but that's not
- 00:43:29business it's charity and selling and
- 00:43:32most notably taking money is a learned
- 00:43:36skill learn is the six skill that you
- 00:43:39always need to be a lifelong
- 00:43:41learner we're good at this we're all
- 00:43:43over this one this isn't a challenge for
- 00:43:45for us we're amazing at being able to
- 00:43:48identify gaps in our knowledge in our
- 00:43:50clinical situation we know what we know
- 00:43:52and we know what we don't know and more
- 00:43:54of the point the expert nurse know know
- 00:43:57that she that he or she is standing on
- 00:43:59the abyss of everything that they don't
- 00:44:01know so owning the fact that we're
- 00:44:03lifelong Learners is okay with us the
- 00:44:06trick for nursing entrepreneurs is to
- 00:44:08know when to
- 00:44:09Outsource doctors are great at
- 00:44:11Outsourcing that's kind of their Core
- 00:44:13Business and so are Allied Health they
- 00:44:15have a very clear scope of practice but
- 00:44:18if nurses we're often the ones that are
- 00:44:20there 24/7 and we're the one holding the
- 00:44:23bag at the end of the day so we're the
- 00:44:24ones there at the end of the day to sort
- 00:44:26everything perspective of what bizarre
- 00:44:29and miscellaneous sorts of things crop
- 00:44:31up but in business we can't know
- 00:44:34everything and we shouldn't be doing
- 00:44:36everything because we have a core
- 00:44:37knowledge that we're exploiting and if
- 00:44:40we're running around with minutia then
- 00:44:43we're never going to grow our business
- 00:44:44and never going to be successful so
- 00:44:46learning to know what we need to know
- 00:44:49and what we don't need to know is
- 00:44:50probably the challenge for us as
- 00:44:53nurses seven is self-reflection again I
- 00:44:56think a nurse are intuitively really
- 00:44:58good at this by nature of what we do can
- 00:45:01be a really confronting process um when
- 00:45:03we make a mistake then we know that that
- 00:45:06mistake impacts our client and our
- 00:45:09patient that's right in front of us if
- 00:45:10we give them the wrong drug then it's us
- 00:45:13that have caused harm and maybe a poor
- 00:45:17outcome so we have spent many and many a
- 00:45:20year in our nursing Journeys
- 00:45:22self-reflecting on what we do and what
- 00:45:25we can potentially do
- 00:45:28um so taking a minute to think for us
- 00:45:31not difficult number eight self-reliance
- 00:45:35again easy streight for us
- 00:45:37resourcefulness is absolutely fine for
- 00:45:39us we're professional problem solvers so
- 00:45:43this skill is really easy for us as
- 00:45:46well the next thing is knowledge it's
- 00:45:50great got the entrepreneurial spirit and
- 00:45:53of those eight qualities you know you
- 00:45:55might be thinking that you've got five
- 00:45:57or six and the rest you'll learn on the
- 00:46:00way but then there was universally the
- 00:46:03question about you know there is a
- 00:46:06enormous amount out there about running
- 00:46:08a business that you don't know anything
- 00:46:09about the actual nuts and bolts
- 00:46:12mechanics about what you need to do and
- 00:46:16it's true it can be a significant amount
- 00:46:20um of things that you've never even had
- 00:46:22a need to think about or know about
- 00:46:24before and there're things like cash
- 00:46:27flow and Taxation where you know every
- 00:46:31time we need to go and get a pen there's
- 00:46:33uh a nice little corporate Express order
- 00:46:37that someone has done for us and we've
- 00:46:38got rings of paper and folders if we
- 00:46:41need them and a ward clerk that knows
- 00:46:43how to get it if we do need something
- 00:46:45else so even getting supplies we on our
- 00:46:47own is
- 00:46:50complicated um so there's an enormous
- 00:46:53amount of you know cash flow taxation
- 00:46:55how to pay for supply
- 00:46:57about financial knowledge that we need
- 00:46:59to know you need things like opening a
- 00:47:02bank account and bookkeeping and
- 00:47:04sourcing Finance um managing the cash
- 00:47:07flow and financial reporting and when to
- 00:47:10seek some financial help with things
- 00:47:13like that it's again like one of the
- 00:47:15qualities that we were talking about in
- 00:47:17the earlier slide in terms of um learn
- 00:47:21you know what you know and you know what
- 00:47:23you don't know the trick is not sitting
- 00:47:25for Endless hours youtubing videos on
- 00:47:29how to build your own website and you
- 00:47:32know Australian bookkeeping
- 00:47:34101 it's just a fact that you can't
- 00:47:37build that knowledge and it would be a
- 00:47:40waste of your core knowledge in the what
- 00:47:43you're going to do to be spending that
- 00:47:46time and you have to accept that you're
- 00:47:48not going to know anything and you need
- 00:47:49to get on the phone and say I need a
- 00:47:50bookkeeper I need an accountant I need
- 00:47:53someone to tell me how I get a loan to
- 00:47:57cover these costs and if I am going to
- 00:47:58get a loan how do I know how much for
- 00:48:01all of those resources and advices out
- 00:48:03there and a lot of it is for free as
- 00:48:05well Australian government is incredibly
- 00:48:07committed to small business and startups
- 00:48:11so there is a lot of resources out there
- 00:48:13that you can access for
- 00:48:15free there are decisions that you need
- 00:48:17to make about bricks and mortar versus
- 00:48:20online are you going to be a disruptive
- 00:48:23service and be the next Uber to the Home
- 00:48:26Care world or the agency World um and so
- 00:48:30like uber you're the greatest provider
- 00:48:32of taxi services and don't own any taxes
- 00:48:35and so you maybe you're the greatest
- 00:48:37provider of Health Care and nurses that
- 00:48:40don't actually employ
- 00:48:42anybody um or is this an idea that you
- 00:48:44have that can be administered online and
- 00:48:47you're selling products to nurses that
- 00:48:50they need they want scrubs that look
- 00:48:52good and not Buri back of house and
- 00:48:55poorly made so you're going to make
- 00:48:56scrubs that are fabulous it's something
- 00:48:59that can be done online and you don't
- 00:49:01need to go and get a shop front
- 00:49:04for um marketing is something that of
- 00:49:07course as nurses we have no interest in
- 00:49:11knowing in the core business when we're
- 00:49:13a uh career employee and again it's
- 00:49:16something that we shouldn't necessarily
- 00:49:17know about we know what we know and
- 00:49:19we're trying to deliver it to clients
- 00:49:22and if that's what we're doing that's
- 00:49:24what we should be doing and Outsource
- 00:49:27those sorts of um tasks is fundamental
- 00:49:30because there are people with as much
- 00:49:32knowledge about marketing as we have
- 00:49:33about nursing so let them do that
- 00:49:35because it's much easier for them to do
- 00:49:37it than it is for us business planning
- 00:49:40and finding investment is something
- 00:49:42that's important and that you need some
- 00:49:44help with but the important part is
- 00:49:48probably coming up with you know how
- 00:49:50you're going to deliver and what you're
- 00:49:52going to deliver and why you're going to
- 00:49:53deliver it more than any of these tasks
- 00:49:57all of these tasks can be very easily
- 00:50:00consumed by expert knowledge paying
- 00:50:02other people or finding resources around
- 00:50:05and not something that should be
- 00:50:07crippling to the
- 00:50:10greater journey and really indulging
- 00:50:14that entrepreneurial spirit that lies
- 00:50:19within so that's who we are as an
- 00:50:22entrepreneur and if that's something
- 00:50:24unusually that you're starting at the
- 00:50:26end of this presentation to think um
- 00:50:30that it is something that lies within
- 00:50:32you there are lots of ways that people
- 00:50:35have um indulged those little
- 00:50:38entrepreneurial urges that um are within
- 00:50:41them and so at my website at that that
- 00:50:44you can see on here at n manager.com um
- 00:50:47entrepreneurs I've got some resources
- 00:50:51and some of them are nuts and bols
- 00:50:52resources that will send you to things
- 00:50:54that are worrying you that keeping up
- 00:50:56like that night like how do you write a
- 00:50:58a business loan um so that you can see
- 00:51:02that it's easy and it's
- 00:51:04consumable um but more importantly some
- 00:51:07of the other resources and some
- 00:51:08interviews that I've done with um
- 00:51:10entrepreneurs including Linda delot um
- 00:51:13and how she
- 00:51:15started um and how she enjoys her life
- 00:51:20as an entrepreneur and how she can't
- 00:51:22imagine going back and mainly because
- 00:51:25she feels that she can do so much more
- 00:51:28when she has complete control over what
- 00:51:30she can do for her clients as opposed to
- 00:51:33how she could do it as a career
- 00:51:35employee um she's incredibly um
- 00:51:39motivational for those who actually do
- 00:51:41have a bit of an entrepreneurial streak
- 00:51:43within them and so there are some other
- 00:51:46resources there as well about um some
- 00:51:49fantastic case studies about nurses who
- 00:51:51have started their own businesses which
- 00:51:54hopefully will be a help
- 00:51:59Nicole thank you very much for a very
- 00:52:02interesting
- 00:52:03presentation um if you're attending this
- 00:52:06session live and you have a question
- 00:52:09that you would like to put to Nicole you
- 00:52:11just need to click on that question mark
- 00:52:13button and a little box will appear for
- 00:52:15you you can type it into the box and hit
- 00:52:18send and it will come
- 00:52:20through so Nicole as I was listening to
- 00:52:23you I was thinking um
- 00:52:27as a nurse we do have a very large uh
- 00:52:31diverse skill base and for those who are
- 00:52:34listening I would recommend that you um
- 00:52:37go to nurse manager HQ because there are
- 00:52:40some exceptional resources located on
- 00:52:42that
- 00:52:43website is that part of nurse coaching
- 00:52:47to assist
- 00:52:49nurses identify the skills that they've
- 00:52:52got yeah I think so I think there are
- 00:52:55lots of nurses out there that have got a
- 00:52:57very diverse um skill set um and
- 00:53:02character traits that aren't
- 00:53:04necessarily um well um exploited I guess
- 00:53:10in that career employee um and the you
- 00:53:13Garden vary career path that we have um
- 00:53:16but it's not something that we often
- 00:53:18talk about like I don't know that 5 or
- 00:53:2110 years ago I'd really given any
- 00:53:23thought to how many nurses had started
- 00:53:25businesses
- 00:53:27um just seems almost so foreign doesn't
- 00:53:30it um but seeing that there are so many
- 00:53:33nurses out there that are really got
- 00:53:35thriving practices and thriving
- 00:53:38businesses um but making you know
- 00:53:41pointing that out to people I think is
- 00:53:42an important part of you know that shift
- 00:53:46from I've could give something more and
- 00:53:49differently to how I'm doing it now
- 00:53:52certainly look a very interesting
- 00:53:54presentation Nicole and
- 00:53:56the um resources that Nicole has
- 00:53:59identified to you are available via that
- 00:54:02link thank you
- 00:54:06again to everyone who's listening I wish
- 00:54:09you an absolutely exceptional day and I
- 00:54:11look forward to seeing you online at
- 00:54:14another webinar very soon goodbye
