00:00:00
many of you have been asking for a video
00:00:02
explaining how to connect zoto to
00:00:04
obsidian so in this video I'll be going
00:00:07
over how to get set up in zoto with the
00:00:09
better bibtex plugin which allows you to
00:00:12
do this and generate your Source notes
00:00:16
by pulling data from
00:00:19
zoto and making them look real nice and
00:00:22
clean like this and then they get
00:00:25
automatically added to the source note
00:00:28
Hub which is available in my second
00:00:30
brain Vault you can download it in the
00:00:32
link in the description and this sorts
00:00:35
all the source notes by item type so it
00:00:39
won't pull in everything that you have
00:00:41
in zoto in your reference manager it
00:00:43
just pulls in the notes that you
00:00:47
generate as Source notes from zoto so
00:00:51
let's dive in and I'll show you exactly
00:00:53
how to do all this the first thing
00:00:55
you're going to do is obviously download
00:00:57
zoto then once it's installed
00:01:00
it's going to look more like this and
00:01:03
we'll just click done here and if you
00:01:05
press command comma to open the settings
00:01:08
menu same as obsidian you can see that
00:01:12
there's light and dark mode now so I
00:01:14
like dark mode I'm a dark mode
00:01:16
maximalist I'm going to keep it this way
00:01:19
uh so how do we add references to zoto
00:01:22
now there's two ways that we can do that
00:01:24
the first is through zoto you can press
00:01:27
this uh identifier wand it looks looks
00:01:30
like and enter the ISBN or the DOI uh
00:01:34
there's a number of other uh codes that
00:01:37
you can enter here that I don't know
00:01:39
about but uh I usually use ISBN or DOI
00:01:43
so you can add them that way and then if
00:01:45
zoto does detect that reference material
00:01:48
it will pull in all the metadata now the
00:01:50
other way you can do this is by
00:01:52
downloading the zoto browser connector
00:01:54
and you can do that through zoto so if
00:01:56
you go up to
00:01:57
tools and install browser
00:02:01
connector it will open up the page for
00:02:04
you to install this browser extension
00:02:07
and it's available on Safari Firefox
00:02:11
Edge Chrome all of the major browsers uh
00:02:15
you can install the zoto connector so
00:02:18
you would just press install there I
00:02:20
already have it set up and what I do is
00:02:23
I have it pinned to my top bar so I'll
00:02:27
just show you how this works if I happen
00:02:29
to come acoss Ross a web article a PDF a
00:02:33
journal uh even an ebook anything like
00:02:36
that that I am able to get a digital
00:02:39
version of uh what I will do is go in my
00:02:42
browser and click the zoto
00:02:45
connector and so if you can see it's
00:02:48
this icon up here and once I click this
00:02:52
it's going to automatically add it to
00:02:54
zoto so I clicked it there and now I
00:02:58
want to actually add some tab tags to
00:03:00
this because I like to tag all of my
00:03:01
references so I'm going to click the
00:03:03
drop down here and now I can place this
00:03:06
in a different uh Library if I wanted to
00:03:10
I'm going to keep it in the zoto video
00:03:12
library but normally I would put this in
00:03:14
the web articles
00:03:15
Library uh so I'm going to just add some
00:03:18
quick tags here we'll say
00:03:21
PKM personal Knowledge
00:03:24
Management uh information
00:03:28
Theory productivity so you get the idea
00:03:32
you're just going to add bunch of tags
00:03:34
this is just what I do makes the
00:03:36
reference material more searchable as
00:03:37
your library grows so I'll click done
00:03:41
and now if we go over to zoto you can
00:03:43
see that it popped it right in there
00:03:45
automatically and it took a snapshot of
00:03:48
that article so this is an offline
00:03:50
snapshot it archived that web page for
00:03:53
me so I can access this anywhere now if
00:03:56
I click this it'll open it in zoto
00:04:00
and this is a local file so I can do
00:04:04
whatever I want with this it's frozen in
00:04:06
time and I'll never lose this reference
00:04:08
material this is why I use a reference
00:04:10
manager and not a readit later app so I
00:04:13
can consume this Source in zoto now I
00:04:16
don't have to go back to my web browser
00:04:18
but I'll show you another thing that you
00:04:19
can do if you wanted to make this more
00:04:21
readable let's say it's on a website
00:04:23
like the New York Times that has all
00:04:25
these ads all over the place and you
00:04:27
don't want to Archive the page that way
00:04:29
so what I would do is I use this other
00:04:32
extension that's called reader View and
00:04:35
this is a free browser extension I just
00:04:37
click this and it will make a readable
00:04:39
form of this article and now this is
00:04:43
more printable it's more legible and
00:04:46
what I can do is even change the font if
00:04:48
I wanted
00:04:50
to and change the theme as well so I can
00:04:54
just kind of pick a theme that I want to
00:04:57
use to freeze this article in time and
00:05:00
archive it in my reference manager so
00:05:05
let's say I like this one so what I'll
00:05:07
do is press command P to print this and
00:05:11
make sure that it's selected as save as
00:05:13
PDF and then we're going to save that
00:05:16
and I'll save it to my
00:05:18
desktop now if I go back to
00:05:22
zoto and I go
00:05:25
to this reference that I just captured
00:05:30
I can go over to the right side menu and
00:05:34
press this paperclip here for
00:05:37
attachments going to click add and file
00:05:41
and then here is the printable PDF that
00:05:44
I just downloaded and we're going to
00:05:46
open that and now I have a more reader
00:05:49
friendly version of this archived and
00:05:53
you can do all of your highlighting in
00:05:54
here there's different highlighting
00:05:57
Styles there's
00:05:58
underlines uh you can draw on it so all
00:06:03
kinds of stuff you can do that is all
00:06:04
built into zoto now which is really
00:06:07
great and if you want to delete it you
00:06:09
just select it and delete so let's close
00:06:12
out of there so now the question is how
00:06:14
do we connect this all to obsidian well
00:06:16
the first thing we're going to do is
00:06:18
download the better bibtex plugin for
00:06:20
zoto I will leave a link to this in the
00:06:23
description but you're going to go to
00:06:25
the download link here and this will
00:06:28
take you to the latest update on their
00:06:30
GitHub page this is a very active
00:06:32
project they're constantly pushing
00:06:34
updates and even just after zoto 7
00:06:37
released the other day they had an
00:06:39
updated better bibtex plugin because
00:06:42
what happened was the previous version
00:06:44
broke in the zoto 7 update so the better
00:06:49
bib Tex team quickly released an update
00:06:51
and it's all working back to normal now
00:06:53
so you're going to download the xpi file
00:06:56
here we'll just click that and it
00:06:59
download it already it's a very quick
00:07:01
download and we're going to go back to
00:07:03
zoto here go to tools
00:07:07
plugins and you're going to click this
00:07:10
gear at the top right and install plugin
00:07:12
from file then select the xpi file you
00:07:17
just downloaded click
00:07:20
open and there's better bib Tex so
00:07:22
that's all set up you may have to
00:07:24
restart the application I'm not sure but
00:07:28
this looks like it's all connected and
00:07:30
ready to go and as you can see it now
00:07:33
has a field for citation key now if you
00:07:36
don't have this displaying what you
00:07:38
would do is rightclick the menu here on
00:07:41
the top where it has all the different
00:07:43
fields and you would click citation key
00:07:46
so you want to make sure that you have
00:07:47
citation key displayed as a field here
00:07:51
and the reason for this is this is how
00:07:53
we're going to name our source notes and
00:07:56
refer back to the reference in zoto so
00:07:59
this is not a complete citation key
00:08:02
because I'm missing the author name so
00:08:05
sometimes when you pull in an article
00:08:07
into zoto it doesn't have all the
00:08:10
metadata and you need to manually add it
00:08:12
yourself and the way that my bib Keys
00:08:15
get titled is by author last name and
00:08:18
then year of the publication so I need
00:08:22
the author's name in this article and I
00:08:25
don't know what that is so we have to go
00:08:26
back to the article and see what his
00:08:29
name name is it's Sebastian gsky I'm
00:08:31
just going to copy this so I don't
00:08:33
misspell it and I'll paste it in here
00:08:37
there's gebski
00:08:43
and Sebastian so now it's properly cited
00:08:49
and we've got the citation key as you
00:08:51
can see it's r. gebski
00:08:53
2019 that's exactly how I want it now
00:08:56
the reason I use r dot is that it's
00:08:58
telling me that this is a reference in
00:09:01
zoto because I'm linking my sources all
00:09:04
over the place I have an analog note box
00:09:07
uh I'm referencing material in my pocket
00:09:09
notebook and in obsidian so I'm cross
00:09:12
referencing my source material all over
00:09:14
the place and by having the r dot it's
00:09:17
telling me that this is a reference that
00:09:19
I've captured in zoto so uh you don't
00:09:23
have to have this this is just how I do
00:09:25
it and I'll just show you real quick how
00:09:26
I have that added uh you're just going
00:09:28
to go to the settings so we're going to
00:09:30
press command comma again and a great
00:09:33
feature of the new version of zoto is
00:09:36
that it's added a menu in the main menu
00:09:39
for your plugins so this is a really
00:09:42
great addition um you don't have to go
00:09:44
to the separate menu anymore uh but this
00:09:47
is where I have the custom formula for
00:09:49
my site key so I'll also include this in
00:09:52
the description um so you don't have to
00:09:55
go through and pause the video and all
00:09:57
that but uh this is the formula I use
00:10:00
and if you wanted to remove the r dot if
00:10:02
that doesn't make sense to you you just
00:10:04
go like that and keep it as author
00:10:07
year so we'll close out of here now that
00:10:10
you have better bib deex connected let's
00:10:11
go into obsidian and get this all
00:10:14
synchronized so I have this all
00:10:17
preconfigured in my obsidian Vault that
00:10:19
you can download in the link in the
00:10:21
description but if you want to do this
00:10:23
on your own you're just going to press
00:10:25
command comma to pull up the menu and we
00:10:28
want to install a community plugin
00:10:30
that's called zoto integration now I
00:10:33
already have this installed there is an
00:10:35
update it looks like so let's just
00:10:37
update this real quick and as you can
00:10:40
see this is telling you that it requires
00:10:42
the better bib Tex plugin so we just
00:10:44
installed that and we're good to go now
00:10:47
that this is installed all we have to do
00:10:49
is go over to the zoto integration
00:10:54
settings and you're going to want to
00:10:57
include a Loc that you're importing your
00:11:01
Source notes to all of my source
00:11:03
material goes to the same folder because
00:11:05
I'm organizing it with this here in case
00:11:09
I need to navigate uh the source
00:11:12
material I'll do it this way um you can
00:11:15
also just search for it in obsidian as
00:11:17
well so I keep that all in the same
00:11:20
folder I don't get into all the folder
00:11:22
hierarchies with the different types of
00:11:24
sources uh I also like to have this
00:11:26
option toggled on here because it will
00:11:30
automatically open the source note as
00:11:32
soon as you generate it and we also want
00:11:35
to so we also want to select a citation
00:11:38
format uh this may not be showing on
00:11:41
your menu if it's if you've just
00:11:43
installed the plugin so you want to add
00:11:45
citation format this way I use Chicago
00:11:49
17th Edition you can use whatever you
00:11:51
want but you want to make sure that
00:11:52
you're consistent with zoto because zoto
00:11:56
also has a citation
00:12:00
manager and you want to make sure that
00:12:02
you're using the same style so so that
00:12:05
way when you generate bibliographies
00:12:07
from zoto it's consistent with the
00:12:10
citation format in obsidian and I'll
00:12:13
show you what I mean by that so if I
00:12:15
wanted to grab this citation I can just
00:12:18
rightclick and select this option here
00:12:22
that says create bibliography from
00:12:24
item and you can select your citation
00:12:27
style here but if you have it selected
00:12:30
in the settings it will pre-select your
00:12:33
preferred citation style so I just go
00:12:36
ahead and click okay and now it's on my
00:12:38
clipboard and if I go into
00:12:40
obsidian and let's say this is at the
00:12:43
bottom of a main note I would just press
00:12:46
command V and that's pasted in uh
00:12:49
formatted and cited exactly how it is in
00:12:52
zoto so we'll just get rid of that and
00:12:58
let's go back to the the zoto menu here
00:13:01
and just see what else we need so this
00:13:04
is the import format now this is saying
00:13:07
how do you want your Source notes to be
00:13:09
titled where do you want them to go
00:13:12
where should the images be stored when
00:13:13
you pull in your reference material if
00:13:16
you're doing that and what kind of
00:13:18
template are you using and this is
00:13:20
basically the command that you're going
00:13:22
to use to create a source note so I just
00:13:25
named mine add Source note and then the
00:13:28
output path is going going into zc/
00:13:31
sourc notes SL site key so it's just
00:13:34
being named after the site key exactly
00:13:37
how it is in zoto and it's not named
00:13:40
after the article titles the reason for
00:13:42
that is because when you start naming
00:13:44
your Source notes after the article
00:13:46
titles it's going to become very
00:13:49
difficult to discern as your knowledge
00:13:50
base grows the difference between a
00:13:53
source note and a main note so if I
00:13:56
titled my main note something that's
00:13:58
similar to the tit of an article in my
00:14:00
reference manager it's going to cause
00:14:02
some confusion when I go to search for
00:14:04
that material in obsidian um but let's
00:14:07
just continue on here so now the other
00:14:10
thing is you'll need a zoto template in
00:14:12
obsidian so this is another thing that
00:14:14
I've included in My Vault I spent a lot
00:14:17
of work formatting my zoto template so
00:14:20
that it's consistent with the way that
00:14:22
I'm pulling in all of my source material
00:14:24
and so this is where you would select
00:14:26
that template file then again you're
00:14:28
going to select your bibliography style
00:14:32
and that should be it as far as the
00:14:35
settings go now let me just minimize
00:14:38
this window here because it's going to
00:14:40
pull up an overlay so now if I press
00:14:43
command shift L it's going to open a
00:14:46
zoto search bar and I can just type in
00:14:49
the reference material I'm looking for
00:14:51
so that one is already selected in this
00:14:53
case because it knows it's the most
00:14:55
recent capture that I have in zoto and
00:14:59
and then I just press enter so now it's
00:15:01
in there and I press enter
00:15:02
again and we've got ourselves a source
00:15:07
note so let's look at what this looks
00:15:09
like here now the first thing you'll
00:15:12
notice is there's a link what does this
00:15:15
do if we click this it's going to open
00:15:19
the link in zoto to this file so it just
00:15:25
highlighted it here and it's pointing me
00:15:28
directly to to this Source material so
00:15:31
this is what I mean by we're leaving a
00:15:33
paper trail directly back to the source
00:15:35
material with our source notes and so
00:15:38
there's also a place here for metadata
00:15:41
now this is just going to pull in
00:15:43
whatever metadata is available in zoto
00:15:46
so if you have a lot of metadata in your
00:15:48
reference in zoto it's going to populate
00:15:51
all of that so in this case it's really
00:15:53
only five properties that it's populated
00:15:56
uh which is fine this is the bare
00:15:58
minimum of what would need in obsidian
00:16:01
so I also include a field here for
00:16:03
selection intent and this is to Define
00:16:06
what it is that I intend to do with this
00:16:08
Source material how does this relate to
00:16:10
my creative goals what do I plan to do
00:16:12
with this is this going to be published
00:16:15
is this something for uh academic work
00:16:18
what is the intent in selecting this
00:16:20
material among all of the other material
00:16:22
I could have been bringing into my
00:16:25
knowledge base so then this is where you
00:16:29
write your Source notes the way that I
00:16:31
do this and the traditional zle Casten
00:16:33
way to do this is to start with the page
00:16:35
number so if you're reading a book uh a
00:16:38
PDF that has page numbers you would add
00:16:40
that here uh I just simply type the
00:16:43
number like this and then the note that
00:16:46
way and then you just keep going 29
00:16:49
here's the note
00:16:51
32 and then this might be a
00:16:57
link this is a
00:17:00
linked note so just like that that's all
00:17:04
there is to it to writing Source notes
00:17:06
you're just making these quick jots of
00:17:08
key terms and ideas that you can
00:17:10
reference back to later so that's
00:17:13
basically all there is to writing a
00:17:16
source note so the other thing that this
00:17:17
is doing is if I go over to my source
00:17:20
note Hub I can now see that at the top
00:17:24
of this table here is my latest Source
00:17:28
note so this gives me a bird's eye view
00:17:30
of all my reference material as I write
00:17:33
Source notes in obsidian with it and if
00:17:36
I go to web articles it's also in there
00:17:39
because this is a web article and if I
00:17:42
go to books it's not listed here because
00:17:44
it's not a book uh so this is displaying
00:17:47
all of my source notes as the item type
00:17:50
so that's about it that's all you need
00:17:52
to do to get zoto connected to obsidian
00:17:56
