- 00:20:30co-owned by Jerry Jones and John Goff

- 00:21:29the numbers are even stranger when
- 00:21:31stacked up against traditional media

- 00:21:34that all these streamers and content
- 00:21:36creators are actually also gamees square

- 00:21:40only ones getting richer they land huge
- 00:21:42deals that they never would have gotten

- 00:21:45profit for themselves as the company is

- 00:21:51secure those deals in the first place
- 00:21:53with massive losses worthless stock and
- 00:21:55R&D led by a ninja the fortnite streamer
- 00:21:58games Square seems destined to run out
- 00:22:00of cash just like FaZe and Enthusiast it
- 00:22:03all raises the same questions do these
- 00:22:05companies exist to profit off the talent
- 00:22:07or is the talent there to milk money out
- 00:22:09of the company and how can the
- 00:22:11individual success of a content creator
- 00:22:13or streamer whose followings are rooted
- 00:22:15in parasocial interactions ever
- 00:22:17translate into a faceless corporate
- 00:22:23entity when we look at less capitalist
- 00:22:25regions like the EU the same
- 00:22:27unsustainability appears heroic is a
- 00:22:29Norway org that Rose to Global
- 00:22:31prominence on the heels of its
- 00:22:32Counter-Strike team many consider their
- 00:22:34undefeated performance in the 20121 ESL

- 00:23:41hero had to pay if they wanted a
- 00:23:42guaranteed spot on the biggest stage in
- 00:23:44Counterstrike as a fixed asset heroic
- 00:23:47could only write off a quarter of the
- 00:23:48cost of membership as depreciation
- 00:23:51membership fees and player salaries
- 00:23:53combined sink the company to an
- 00:23:54operating loss of $5 million in business

- 00:24:41Russian gambling
- 00:24:43company while heroic was hoping to
- 00:24:45establish itself on a shoestring budget
- 00:24:47astralis over in Denmark was Esports
- 00:24:49royalty they had the best CS team in the
- 00:24:51world with four major championships and
- 00:24:53secured permanent slots in proleague
- 00:24:55blast and LDC all of which were paid
- 00:24:58with Venture Capital like heroic
- 00:25:00astralis had pegged its commercial hopes
- 00:25:02on the shift to close leagues despite
- 00:25:04leading in tier one competitive success
- 00:25:06Asis still posted loss after loss the
- 00:25:08only year where astralis has ever posted
- 00:25:10a profit was in 2023 when they sold
- 00:25:13their LEC slot for $19 million to a VC
- 00:25:16backed French team when segmented by
- 00:25:18title every team in business division at
- 00:25:20astralis including the physical gaming
- 00:25:22Cafe has lost money in every year of its
- 00:25:25existence in four years asus's stock has
- 00:25:27plummeted to just 17 cents a share
- 00:25:30despite racing to be the very first
- 00:25:31Esports team in the world to IPO the

- 00:29:59and the future monetization
- 00:30:01opportunities that came with them the
- 00:30:03only way to accomplish that would be to
- 00:30:04control everything the Starcraft 2
- 00:30:06Community could not be allowed to
- 00:30:08self-organize like the Koreans had done
- 00:30:10with brood War Activision embedded
- 00:30:12itself into every aspect of SC2
- 00:30:14operating tournaments forcing battl net
- 00:30:162.0 onto every player and pushing teams
- 00:30:18to join the only official Blizzard
- 00:30:20sanction Championship League the company
- 00:30:22persisted with the same heavy-handed
- 00:30:24approach with Heroes of the Storm
- 00:30:26Hearthstone Call of Duty and OverWatch
- 00:30:28watch under the belief that if they did
- 00:30:29it for enough titles they could own
- 00:30:31Esports in the west by the mid-20s
- 00:30:34Activision was regularly Fanning the

- 00:31:43millions of dollars that Activision had
- 00:31:44invested into Esports was just a drop in
- 00:31:47the ocean compared to what it was making
- 00:31:48off microtransactions alone still
- 00:31:51Activision pocketed these entry fees for
- 00:31:53itself and they embarked on a global
- 00:31:55Road Show selling League spots to glal
- 00:31:57billionaire and VC back teams under the
- 00:31:59promise of eyeballs and revenue that
- 00:32:01simply never existed by 2021 Bobby had
- 00:32:04completely forgotten about Esports
- 00:32:06free-to-play live Services had taken off
- 00:32:08and they offered comparable monetization
- 00:32:11engagement and viewership without the
- 00:32:12overhead of Esports war zone was the
- 00:32:15hottest game in town it was bigger than
- 00:32:16Diablo OverWatch World of Warcraft and
- 00:32:19Starcraft combined in 2024 Activision
- 00:32:22shuttered the OverWatch league and paid
- 00:32:23out $6 million to each team to kick them

- 00:32:35their focus was mass Market monetization
- 00:32:37as long as Competitive Gaming was
- 00:32:39driving players to buy more Ultimate
- 00:32:41Team packs the publisher was happy to
- 00:32:43invest in a bit of marketing or
- 00:32:44contribute to a prize pool every now and
- 00:32:46then but as sales improved and the
- 00:32:48relationship between Esports viewers
- 00:32:50players and microtransactions proved
- 00:32:52worthwhile EA ramped up its Investments
- 00:32:54accordingly organizing leagues acquiring
- 00:32:57sponsors and building their own
- 00:32:58broadcast Studios for FIFA Madden
- 00:33:01Battlefield and Apex tournaments but
- 00:33:03similar to Activision live Services took
- 00:33:05priority after 2022 and EA has since
- 00:33:08remained half committed to Competitive
- 00:33:09Gaming with one foot in and one foot out

- 00:39:48one video game for the rest of their
- 00:39:49life and building a billion dooll
- 00:39:51business on that assumption is like

- 00:39:57play players never really needed huge
- 00:39:59prize pools and six-figure salaries to
- 00:40:01compete they didn't need stadiums or
