Cronologรญa
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
The video begins by introducing the concept of "psychic entropy," a state of mental disorder and chaos that individuals often experience when they lack direction and purpose. The speaker, a co-founder of the Flow Research Collective, explains how his personal experiences of losing direction after a severe head injury, which haltered his ambitions of becoming a rugby player, led him to a state of despair. This was a result of having no clear goals to orient his consciousness.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
The speaker discusses how reading a self-help book about goal setting helped him regain clarity and purpose. He emphasizes the importance of being "goal-directed," which means having a clear, long-term objective that aligns various life activities. This alignment counters the disorder of psychic entropy and enables access to flow statesโa state where peak performance and satisfaction occur. Goals act as a guide, giving structure to our consciousness and reducing mental chaos.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
To be effective and reach flow states, one must have goals that create a structured consciousness. He highlights the importance of structuring one's consciousness with a "goal stack"โa hierarchy from broad purpose to specific daily actions. The speaker promises a guide to constructing such a goal stack to ensure every action aligns with a long-term vision, helping in utilizing one's potential fully. He uses personal anecdotes and professional insights to emphasize this point.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
The speaker introduces the concept of "possibility space," which is the range of potential outcomes one believes can be achieved. He illustrates how people with broader possibility spaces take actions that others might dismiss. Examples include his brother, who aspired to captain a national team and succeeded, and Elon Musk, who aims to colonize Mars. Expanding oneโs possibility space can lead to unexpected and significant achievements.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
The video explains methods to expand one's possibility space, including surrounding oneself with ambitious people (belief contagion), challenging assumed limits (big thinking), and building self-efficacy through goal attainment. These broaden what is seen as possible, creating a larger field for personal and professional growth. The speaker relates these methods back to the importance of being goal-directed.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
A process of reverse-engineering goals is introduced, helping individuals align their daily actions with long-term objectives. By starting with a grand vision and breaking it down into sequential steps, individuals can systematically pursue their high hard goals. This transforms abstract aspirations into concrete actions, ensuring progress towards significant achievements.
- 00:30:00 - 00:35:00
The next segments focus on practical strategies, like the "power down ritual" which includes planning and aligning daily tasks with long-term goals to ensure productivity and workflow. The speaker uses the metaphor of dominoes to illustrate how daily activities can be structured to progress towards a larger vision efficiently. This planning prevents wasted effort and promotes flow states.
- 00:35:00 - 00:44:24
In conclusion, the video summarizes the framework for becoming goal-directed by establishing a clear pyramid of goals: the goal stack providing aspiration, goal-directed actions driving progress, and clear goals facilitating focus. Each part plays a role in achieving flow states that enhance personal satisfaction and productivity. The speaker encourages viewers to adopt these strategies for greater clarity and fulfillment in life.

- 00:00:33rugby player I was weight training with

- 00:00:37was surfing with religious dedication
- 00:00:39and these Pursuits were a tunnel through

- 00:00:43funneled the world made sense because it

- 00:00:50everything changed a head injury nearly
- 00:00:52killed me for a year I couldn't get out
- 00:00:53of bed there would be no more rugby no
- 00:00:55more surfing even a 30-minute walk
- 00:00:57became a serious Challenge and for 6
- 00:00:59years I was chronically debilitated
- 00:01:01blurred vision Amnesia barely able to
- 00:01:04function at all but worst than the
- 00:01:06physical pain was the hollow in my chest
- 00:01:09by the time I was 15 2 years into that
- 00:01:12accident my mind started to subtly
- 00:01:14unravel there were no goals anymore no
- 00:01:17future point to orient my Consciousness
- 00:01:19around and make meaning out of the
- 00:01:21daytoday with the identity that I had
- 00:01:24built disintegrated I was unmowed lost
- 00:01:26and unclear on who I was what I was here
- 00:01:28to do and why it was even worth waking
- 00:01:31up in the morning and one day on the way
- 00:01:32to school I had an overwhelming impulse
- 00:01:35an image flash in my mind me hopping off
- 00:01:37the train disappearing into the fields
- 00:01:40beside the Train on the way to school
- 00:01:41and just walking and walking and walking
- 00:01:43until I couldn't take another step the
- 00:01:45vision was to sleep under a tree wake up
- 00:01:48and start walking again and repeat I
- 00:01:49just wanted to break free of everything
- 00:01:51in a single desperate act and there's a
- 00:01:54name for this sort of aimless chaotic
- 00:01:56seeking this desperate grasping for
- 00:01:59something that feels perpetually Out Of
- 00:02:01Reach I was experiencing what
- 00:02:03psychologist Mii chmi called psychic
- 00:02:06entropy now psychic entropy refers to
- 00:02:08the Natural tendency of our
- 00:02:10Consciousness to drift into a state of
- 00:02:12disorder chaos and even despair if it is
- 00:02:16left unstructured Shmi argues that
- 00:02:18psychic entropy is not just a temporary
- 00:02:21State it's actually the human mind's
- 00:02:23default setting without Direction our
- 00:02:26Consciousness wanders aimlessly we
- 00:02:28ruminate on path mistakes worry about
- 00:02:31the future get lost in unproductive
- 00:02:33Daydreams and overwhelmed with
- 00:02:35existential angst it's like a leaf being
- 00:02:38tossed by the wind no Direction no
- 00:02:40control and a nagging sense of wasted
- 00:02:42potential that compounds on itself every
- 00:02:45day we spend in this state and the pain
- 00:02:47of knowing you have more to give but not
- 00:02:49knowing how to unlock it eats away at
- 00:02:52you with every misaligned action
- 00:02:54confidence arod and you start to
- 00:02:55question your worth especially as you
- 00:02:57see others who seem to have clarity and
- 00:03:00properly channeled ambition with their
- 00:03:02lives seemingly all figured out now
- 00:03:04there are two main ways to address
- 00:03:06psychic entropy internally through
- 00:03:08mastering the mind with meditation
- 00:03:11Mantra and prayer the second is
- 00:03:13externally by finding a goal or a focal
- 00:03:16point outside of ourselves that we can
- 00:03:18Orient to so as to bring order to our
- 00:03:20Consciousness for most the external
- 00:03:22approach is more practical easier to
- 00:03:25implement and there's a surprisingly
- 00:03:26simple way that Peak performers use this
- 00:03:29external approach to structure their
- 00:03:31Consciousness so they can ignore
- 00:03:33distraction mitigate existential angst
- 00:03:35and channel their energy with Precision
- 00:03:37we cover that in a moment but at the
- 00:03:39peak of my psychic entropy as a teen
- 00:03:41lost confused identity list I read a
- 00:03:44musty old self-help book that had
- 00:03:46survived my mom's last bookshelf Purge
- 00:03:48for the first time in ages something
- 00:03:50clicked the book was about goal setting
- 00:03:52and how setting goals can help you focus
- 00:03:55classic self-help kind of stuff it seems
- 00:03:57simple enough I thought maybe it could
- 00:03:59work I just need a different goal than
- 00:04:01becoming a professional rby player given
- 00:04:03my current condition my inability to
- 00:04:06exert or function with the head injury
- 00:04:08and I picked a goal as distant as could
- 00:04:10be fairly arbitrarily I decided I'm
- 00:04:12going to become a doctor at the time
- 00:04:15that felt like my way out a path back to
- 00:04:17stability as I committed to that goal
- 00:04:19something interesting happened the chaos
- 00:04:22in my mind slowly began to recede as
- 00:04:24this sense of purpose this desire to
- 00:04:27become a doctor increased my conscious
- 00:04:29experience became increasingly
- 00:04:30harmonious I studied harder I ate
- 00:04:32healthier so that I could study better I
- 00:04:35became more selective with who I spent
- 00:04:36time with I even slept more diligently
- 00:04:38with all of my behavior starting to
- 00:04:40recalibrate with intentionality around
- 00:04:42this goal each chunk of previously
- 00:04:44disorganized experience in my day
- 00:04:47started clicking into place orienting
- 00:04:49toward this North Star of eventually
- 00:04:52becoming a doctor I had discovered the
- 00:04:53surprisingly simple way all PE
- 00:04:55performance structure their
- 00:04:57Consciousness and bring Harmony to The
- 00:04:59Human Condition
- 00:05:00as articulated by Mii Chi semii decades
- 00:05:03ago and it's called becoming gold
- 00:05:06directed when you become goal directed
- 00:05:08you gain the quality of being
- 00:05:09purposefully oriented towards specific
- 00:05:12long-term goals as professionals
- 00:05:14approach work like a pinball they're
- 00:05:15bouncing around from one task to another
- 00:05:18ricocheting off obstacles and
- 00:05:20distractions with goals you're a guided
- 00:05:22missile locked onto your Target and
- 00:05:25empowered to conquer them beyond that
- 00:05:27becoming gold Ed is a prerequisite for
- 00:05:29Flow State as Mii chihi the man who
- 00:05:31popularized the term Flow State puts it
- 00:05:34when an important goal is pursued with
- 00:05:36resolution and all one's varied
- 00:05:38activities fit together into a unified
- 00:05:41flow experience the result is that
- 00:05:43Harmony is brought to Consciousness
- 00:05:45someone who is in harmony no matter what
- 00:05:47he does no matter what is happening to
- 00:05:48him knows that his psychic energy is not
- 00:05:50being wasted on doubt regret guilt and
- 00:05:52fear but is always usefully employed
- 00:05:56gold directedness funnels attention
- 00:05:58organizes experience and imuse life and
- 00:06:01The Human Condition with meaning
- 00:06:03extinguishing the thrashing pain of
- 00:06:05psychic entropy it's also a prerequisite
- 00:06:07for peig performance and access to Flow
- 00:06:09State you simply can't perform at your
- 00:06:11best if your Consciousness isn't
- 00:06:13structured through goals the goals of
- 00:06:15pipe through which your Consciousness
- 00:06:16flows without goals there's no flow and
- 00:06:19goals activate your prefrontal cortex
- 00:06:21enhancing decision- making and focus
- 00:06:23they reduce the negative chatter of your
- 00:06:24brain's default mode Network combating
- 00:06:26worry and rumination and most
- 00:06:28importantly go is light up your brain
- 00:06:29reward centers giving you a sense of
- 00:06:31purpose and fulfillment as you progress
- 00:06:33toward them now interestingly as I
- 00:06:35became goal directed as a teen I didn't
- 00:06:37end up becoming a doctor but that's not
- 00:06:38the point it doesn't matter so much that
- 00:06:41the initial goal is accurate as you'll
- 00:06:43see one of the biggest blockers to
- 00:06:45becoming goal directed and to PE
- 00:06:46performance r large is wanting to feel
- 00:06:49certainty around the goal you're
- 00:06:51pursuing and it being the right one for
- 00:06:52you instead what matters most is
- 00:06:54structuring your Consciousness with a
- 00:06:57goal sometimes any goal now becoming
- 00:06:59goal Ed is just the starting point the
- 00:07:01peak of goal edness is when as high a
- 00:07:04percentage of your daily actions as
- 00:07:06possible are tied directly to your
- 00:07:10long-term Vision that's what we're about
- 00:07:12to cover now you might have a decent
- 00:07:14idea of what your goals are already but
- 00:07:16we're about to dive far beyond goal
- 00:07:17setting we're about to build you what's
- 00:07:19known as a goal stack the goal stack
- 00:07:22involves you building out Direction and
- 00:07:24go all the way up from an unattainable
- 00:07:26infinite purpose down to what are called
- 00:07:29go directed actions that you'll execute
- 00:07:31on a weekly daily hourly even minute to-
- 00:07:34minute basis I've put together a free
- 00:07:37guide that reveals the three key pillars
- 00:07:39of becoming gold directed so you can
- 00:07:41access Flow State more regularly and
- 00:07:43boost your performance to access the
- 00:07:45free guide just click the link in the
- 00:07:47description below and you'll be able to
- 00:07:48download it right away and you want to
- 00:07:50think of this go stack as a set of
- 00:07:52stairs that you construct with the right
- 00:07:54structural Integrity to lead you to the
- 00:07:57eventual end State each step has to
- 00:07:59actually lead to the place you want to
- 00:08:01go if a single step is missing you can't
- 00:08:03get to your destination and for most
- 00:08:05people their ultimate goal remains a
- 00:08:07lofty idea in their head with no
- 00:08:08staircase or one that's partially
- 00:08:11finished leading nowhere to avoid this
- 00:08:13we'll ensure each goal builds upon the
- 00:08:15one before it will architect this goal
- 00:08:17stack together based on each of these
- 00:08:19layers first off we've got purpose which
- 00:08:21is an overarching reason for your
- 00:08:24Pursuits then there's High hard goals
- 00:08:26then you've got your annual goals
- 00:08:27breaking down your high hard goals into
- 00:08:29what you can achieve within a given year
- 00:08:31we've got quarterly goals monthly goals
- 00:08:33and then weekly goals and then of course
- 00:08:35we have to execute these on a daily
- 00:08:36basis now don't worry if this seems a
- 00:08:38little overwhelming I'm going to take
- 00:08:39you through it step by step and show you
- 00:08:41how to actually construct this so you
- 00:08:43can become gold erected so that you're
- 00:08:45always living and working in a way
- 00:08:47that's on track towards your greatest
- 00:08:49goal this brings us to the first
- 00:08:51preliminary step for building your goal
- 00:08:53stack which is to expand your
- 00:08:54possibility space now growing up in
- 00:08:56Ireland my little brother kin and his
- 00:08:58friends shared a passion for rugby they
- 00:09:00were equally skilled but as they grew
- 00:09:01their paths took wildly different turns
- 00:09:04one of the boys set his sights high he
- 00:09:06wanted to play for his local County team
- 00:09:08given a skill he believed this was
- 00:09:09possible he trained accordingly
- 00:09:11following a standard regimen and playing
- 00:09:13in local leagues his actions aligned
- 00:09:14with his belief and he achieved his goal
- 00:09:17of making the county team the other boy
- 00:09:19dreamed even bigger he told the other
- 00:09:20two boys that he planned to play for the
- 00:09:22provincial team he knew would take much
- 00:09:24more practice but he believed it was
- 00:09:26possible so he sought out better
- 00:09:27training he traveled further for tougher
- 00:09:29competition he invested his Savings in
- 00:09:32higher quality Equipment all thanks to
- 00:09:34his expanded thinking his belief that he
- 00:09:36could reach the provincial team but my
- 00:09:38brother kin he was a little different as
- 00:09:40an 8-year-old he didn't just dream of
- 00:09:42County or provincial Glory he saw
- 00:09:44himself captaining the Irish national
- 00:09:46team even competing in the World Cup it
- 00:09:49was a ludicrous goal for a little kid
- 00:09:51kind adults would dismiss with a
- 00:09:53condescending smile but because he
- 00:09:56believed the seemingly impossible future
- 00:09:58was possible he didn't just train harder
- 00:10:01he uprooted his life taking actions that
- 00:10:04the other two boys would never have even
- 00:10:06conceived of as worth taking or possible
- 00:10:10to take Kellen sought out legendary
- 00:10:12coaches that pushed his body to the
- 00:10:14Limit his expanded belief in what was
- 00:10:16possible led him to Black Rock College a
- 00:10:18renowned institution known for producing
- 00:10:20Elite rugby Talent without this
- 00:10:22expansive belief Kell wouldn't have
- 00:10:24taken these actions he easily could have
- 00:10:26peaked playing rugby against his friends
- 00:10:28or the local team team he simply
- 00:10:29wouldn't have seen any other option as
- 00:10:32viable and years later as I watched kin
- 00:10:34lead the Irish national team and play in
- 00:10:37Paris for the Rugby World Cup I marveled
- 00:10:39at the width and expansiveness of his
- 00:10:42conviction and how it had led him to
- 00:10:43this point he had turned an improbable
- 00:10:45go into a reality and it struck me that
- 00:10:48these three boys all started with the
- 00:10:50same raw skill the difference was in
- 00:10:53what they believed they could become
- 00:10:54their possibility space their internal
- 00:10:56map of what they saw as possible for
- 00:10:58themselves dictated the roads they saw
- 00:11:01and the routes they dared to take the
- 00:11:02bigger your thinking The Wider your
- 00:11:05possibility space this concept
- 00:11:06possibility space comes from complexity
- 00:11:08science and possibility space refers to
- 00:11:10the full range of potential States or
- 00:11:12outcomes that a complex system can
- 00:11:14occupy similarly your possibility space
- 00:11:16holds your belief about the potential
- 00:11:19paths your life could take the career
- 00:11:21outcomes that you see as viable for
- 00:11:24yourself the relationships you think you
- 00:11:26could realistically engage it the skill
- 00:11:29you feel you may be able to possess
- 00:11:32think of it like the beam of light you
- 00:11:33use to navigate the world it determines
- 00:11:35what you can see and what remains hidden
- 00:11:37in the shadows like a flashlight the
- 00:11:39first boy could only illuminate a narrow
- 00:11:42possibility space the boy who played for
- 00:11:43the provincial team he had a wider
- 00:11:46flashlight Spotlight revealing more of
- 00:11:48the possibility space but still leaving
- 00:11:50some areas unexplored kin's flot light
- 00:11:52however bathed every corner in light
- 00:11:54exposing paths to extraordinary success
- 00:11:56that others might have dismissed as
- 00:11:58impossible and again it's not that Kenan
- 00:12:00had more resources or Talent he was just
- 00:12:03an eight-year-old just my little brother
- 00:12:04he simply had a larger sense of what was
- 00:12:06possible and worthwhile his possibility
- 00:12:09space turned what looked like
- 00:12:10unrealistic options or actions to the
- 00:12:13other boys into viable ones for Kalin
- 00:12:15that he ended up pursuing which ended up
- 00:12:17resulting in that extraordinary outcome
- 00:12:20another example of how your possibility
- 00:12:22space determines your reality can be
- 00:12:23seen with Elon Musk Elon musk's wildly
- 00:12:26ambitious goal of making Humanity a
- 00:12:28multiplanetary species stems from his
- 00:12:30expansive possibility space he believed
- 00:12:32it was possible to establish human life
- 00:12:34on Mars This belief opened up previously
- 00:12:36unseen options such as flying to Russia
- 00:12:38to speak with rocket engineers and
- 00:12:40calculating the cost difference between
- 00:12:41raw materials and assembled Rockets Elon
- 00:12:44musk's belief in radically cheaper
- 00:12:45Rockets led to the Falcon 1 its success
- 00:12:47fueled more launches more data and
- 00:12:49ultimately the first commercial
- 00:12:51spacecraft to dock with the ISS this
- 00:12:53Relentless pursuit of lower costs paved
- 00:12:55the way for reusable Rockets a feat musk
- 00:12:57achieved with the falcon today the same
- 00:13:00belief drives the development of
- 00:13:01Starship a reusable spacecraft designed
- 00:13:04to carry humans to Mars however if musk
- 00:13:06had a narrow possibility space he might
- 00:13:08have just taken his Paypal fortune and
- 00:13:11decided to invest it in a fairly boring
- 00:13:14tame SAS compy or if he had a slightly
- 00:13:16broader possibility space maybe he would
- 00:13:17have focused only on incremental
- 00:13:19improvements to NASA's efficiency rather
- 00:13:21than pioneering a transformative
- 00:13:22approach to space exploration without
- 00:13:24his expansive possibility space musk
- 00:13:26wouldn't have taken the actions that
- 00:13:28revealed the solution that ultimately
- 00:13:30ended up matching his vision the
- 00:13:31possibility space is the invisible force
- 00:13:33that shapes Our Lives it determines what
- 00:13:35you see as possible to pursue in the
- 00:13:38first place the actions that are
- 00:13:40available to you to follow and of course
- 00:13:42those actions that end up creating the
- 00:13:44outcomes that are available to you or
- 00:13:45not so when building your goal stack to
- 00:13:48become goal directed you want to expand
- 00:13:49your possibility space otherwise you
- 00:13:51will create blindness to options that
- 00:13:53would unlock order of magnitude greater
- 00:13:55outcomes now here are three ways to
- 00:13:57expand your possibility space first
- 00:14:00there's belief contagion belief
- 00:14:01contagion also known as social contagion
- 00:14:04is the most widely recognized way to
- 00:14:06expand your possibility space it turns
- 00:14:07out that all of those old self-help
- 00:14:10quotes you've probably heard like show
- 00:14:11me your friends and I'll show you your
- 00:14:12future you become The Five People You
- 00:14:14spend the most time with or proximity as
- 00:14:16power they're actually accurate at a
- 00:14:18neurological level the science shows
- 00:14:20that beliefs are stored in the same part
- 00:14:22of the brain of social interaction which
- 00:14:24is why surrounding yourself with people
- 00:14:27who have a larger possibility space can
- 00:14:29be transformative your brain's
- 00:14:30ventromedial prefrontal cortex acts kind
- 00:14:33of like a belief vampire strengthening
- 00:14:36beliefs that match what you already
- 00:14:37think and changing beliefs when faced
- 00:14:40with new information especially when it
- 00:14:42comes from credible sources it matches
- 00:14:44what your social group believes or
- 00:14:46triggers an emotional response this
- 00:14:48shows just how much our social
- 00:14:50interactions and connections shape what
- 00:14:52we believe and proximity to people
- 00:14:54drives belief expansion or contraction
- 00:14:56more than almost anything else the
- 00:14:58second way way to expand your
- 00:15:00possibility space is through Brute Force
- 00:15:03big thinking just pushing yourself to do
- 00:15:06what Kalin did to think big by asking
- 00:15:10questions like what would 100 times this
- 00:15:12goal or outcome look like or what would
- 00:15:15I attempt if I knew I couldn't fail what
- 00:15:17goals have I dismissed as unrealistic or
- 00:15:20impossible philosopher and psychonaut
- 00:15:22Terren McKenna who explored the outer
- 00:15:24edges of human consciousness and
- 00:15:26returned to Rave about what he saw like
- 00:15:28to ask this really simple but profound
- 00:15:30question what would I do if I could do
- 00:15:34anything and bear in mind a good goal is
- 00:15:37impossible to reach with current
- 00:15:39resources imagine a startup a new
- 00:15:41company with three team members what if
- 00:15:43they set goals based on the assumption
- 00:15:46that this company would always only have
- 00:15:48these three team members that would be
- 00:15:50absurd when a business sets long-term
- 00:15:52goals it assumes it will add resources
- 00:15:55people Capital capabilities to make the
- 00:15:58goal possibility assume the same for
- 00:16:00yourself you may not have the knowledge
- 00:16:02the skills the work ethic the traits the
- 00:16:05connections the resources to hit your
- 00:16:06goal right now but don't set the goal as
- 00:16:09limited by that assume that you will
- 00:16:11amalgamate them along the way as you go
- 00:16:13if you set goals based on current
- 00:16:14resources skills contacts abilities
- 00:16:17whatever it is you're forever going to
- 00:16:19be anchored to these and limited by them
- 00:16:21instead set goals that seem impossible
- 00:16:23given your current situation your
- 00:16:25resources will change on route to the
- 00:16:26goal from there your big thinking will
- 00:16:29become easier over time through goal
- 00:16:32attainment which will expand your
- 00:16:34selfefficacy and that's the third way to
- 00:16:36expand your possibility space through
- 00:16:38goal attainment and building
- 00:16:40self-efficacy now self-efficacy is your
- 00:16:42belief in your ability to achieve goals
- 00:16:44simple as that as you set and Achieve
- 00:16:46goals your possibility space expands
- 00:16:48like running towards a receding horizon
- 00:16:50line each success reinforces and expands
- 00:16:53your possibility space allowing you to
- 00:16:54set and Achieve even bigger goals take
- 00:16:57Elon Musk for example building and
- 00:16:58selling first company then founding and
- 00:17:00selling PayPal expanded his possibility
- 00:17:02space he didn't start with the goal of
- 00:17:04sending humans to Mars but each success
- 00:17:07made that seemingly impossible goal
- 00:17:09achievable thus widening his possibility
- 00:17:11space this is why it's so key to have a
- 00:17:13goal stack in the first place you have
- 00:17:15to set goals in order to become goal
- 00:17:17directed but you also have to set them
- 00:17:18in order to attain them so you can build
- 00:17:21the increased self-efficacy the
- 00:17:23reinforcing sense that you can achieve
- 00:17:26goals which will lead over time to a
- 00:17:28bigger possibility space and bigger and
- 00:17:29bigger goals from there on out and this
- 00:17:31brings us to the next step of building
- 00:17:33your goal stack the difference between a
- 00:17:35dreamer and a doer is the dreamer stays
- 00:17:37stuck in the big thinking not knowing
- 00:17:40what steps to take next even with big
- 00:17:42thinking they remain a leaf in the wind
- 00:17:46fantasizing rather than executing one of
- 00:17:48the main reasons dreamers don't achieve
- 00:17:50their goals is that the goals weren't
- 00:17:52reverse engineered such that there's
- 00:17:54alignment between your minute to- minute
- 00:17:56actions and your decade to decade Vision
- 00:17:58the goal direct the doer Bridges this
- 00:18:00Gap by reverse engineering goals this
- 00:18:04involves starting with a desired outcome
- 00:18:05or goal and working backwards
- 00:18:07systematically to determine every
- 00:18:09necessary step to achieve that outcome
- 00:18:12this brings us to the Second Step which
- 00:18:14is reverse engineering your goal stack
- 00:18:17now it's time to actually build out your
- 00:18:19goal stack this is what will Orient your
- 00:18:21Consciousness and structure it for Flow
- 00:18:23State but to orient you again here's
- 00:18:25another quick overview of each layer of
- 00:18:26the goal stock we've got that infinite
- 00:18:28purpose then High hard goals annual
- 00:18:30goals quarterly goals monthly goals
- 00:18:31weekly goals and daily goal directed
- 00:18:33actions and we're going to reverse
- 00:18:34engineer from an infinite and
- 00:18:36intentionally unattainable purpose all
- 00:18:39the way down to the actions you need to
- 00:18:41take hour to hour first let's pinpoint
- 00:18:44your purpose now earlier I told you how
- 00:18:46at the age of 13 I experienced a head
- 00:18:48injury that had profound effects on my
- 00:18:50mental state and I stumbling across that
- 00:18:52book on goal setting gave my life
- 00:18:54Direction just before I stumbled upon
- 00:18:56the book I was at the peak of my psychic
- 00:18:58and as a teen lost confused identityless
- 00:19:02reading books about life's purpose and
- 00:19:04this led me to believe that purpose was
- 00:19:07a static entity something that you
- 00:19:09discover through introspection but this
- 00:19:11approach left me plagued with endless
- 00:19:14uncertainty then having struggled with
- 00:19:16my health so much I decided I wanted to
- 00:19:18help others with theirs so I chose to
- 00:19:19pursue becoming a doctor in doing this
- 00:19:21my understanding of purpose began to
- 00:19:23shift I realize the purpose isn't
- 00:19:24necessarily something that finds you
- 00:19:26rather it's something that you simply sh
- 00:19:28choose and then iterate upon as you
- 00:19:30engage with life in other words I
- 00:19:31realize that purpose is more a verb than
- 00:19:34a noun it's something you do not
- 00:19:37something that you have I didn't need to
- 00:19:40find it at a treasure chest lying deep
- 00:19:43in my psyche it's subject to constant
- 00:19:45revision and may change with the seasons
- 00:19:47of life it's not something to overly
- 00:19:49identify with or even get overly
- 00:19:51anchored to it's a functional tool so
- 00:19:53instead of finding my purpose I realized
- 00:19:55that I could just pick a problem I asked
- 00:19:58myself something messed up about the
- 00:19:59world that I wish wasn't so messed up
- 00:20:02that I resonate with personally and the
- 00:20:03idea that anyone out there could
- 00:20:05struggle with their health like me
- 00:20:07bothered me and this changed everything
- 00:20:09it instantly lowered the stakes around
- 00:20:11finding some lofty purpose and gave my
- 00:20:13life Direction becoming a doctor as I
- 00:20:15said before even though I didn't end up
- 00:20:18becoming a doctor in the end it gave my
- 00:20:20life meaning purpose and Direction and
- 00:20:21creative movement and momentum this
- 00:20:23approach actually reminded me of rby how
- 00:20:26the hell do you know what position your
- 00:20:28best start on the Rugby field without
- 00:20:30getting on the field where you got to
- 00:20:31get into play there's no way to know but
- 00:20:33once you're in Play Your Role will
- 00:20:35self-correct and clarify itself fast the
- 00:20:38assumption that conviction certainty and
- 00:20:40confidence in your goals or direction
- 00:20:43are prerequisites to determining a
- 00:20:45direction is a misconception that
- 00:20:47seriously hinders progress limits
- 00:20:50potential and wastes years of many
- 00:20:52people's lives so here's the rule pick a
- 00:20:54problem not a purpose ask if I could
- 00:20:57change one thing about the world what
- 00:20:58would it be maybe it's something you see
- 00:21:00personally with your friends family or
- 00:21:02the World At Large the key is to not
- 00:21:04overthink it this also addresses the
- 00:21:06common problem of picking a niche for
- 00:21:08wouldbe entrepreneurs for example you're
- 00:21:10walking along a beautiful beach but
- 00:21:12instead of pristine sand you find it
- 00:21:14littered with plastic bottles that has
- 00:21:16washed ashore problem here is plastic
- 00:21:18pollution in the oceans your potential
- 00:21:20purpose to create a world where oceans
- 00:21:22and marine life Thrive free from the
- 00:21:25negative impact of human activities or
- 00:21:26you see a news report about a community
- 00:21:28where children have to walk miles every
- 00:21:30day just to collect water from a
- 00:21:31polluted river risking their health and
- 00:21:33missing out on school the problem access
- 00:21:35to clean water your potential purpose to
- 00:21:37build a world where basic human rights
- 00:21:39are respected and upheld for all or
- 00:21:41maybe your friend has been struggling
- 00:21:43with depression but they're afraid to
- 00:21:44seek help because they don't want to be
- 00:21:46seen as weak or Crazy by others the
- 00:21:48problem here may be mental health stigma
- 00:21:51your potential purpose is to ensure that
- 00:21:53every person on Earth has the resources
- 00:21:55they need to live a healthy and
- 00:21:56dignified life or you might already be
- 00:21:58working on a problem you picked maybe
- 00:22:00you're an athlete and you want to
- 00:22:02advance the frontier of human
- 00:22:03performance maybe you work for Google
- 00:22:04and the problem you're picking is to
- 00:22:06pursue their mission of organizing the
- 00:22:08world's information the key here is to
- 00:22:10realize that clarity about your
- 00:22:11direction in life is a choice it's
- 00:22:13similar to order of food off a dinner
- 00:22:15menu maybe you come to the restaurant
- 00:22:17and you already know what you want but
- 00:22:18the chances are if you're like most
- 00:22:19people you don't you get there you look
- 00:22:22at the menu you order something and then
- 00:22:24you eat it believe it or not it's kind
- 00:22:26of similar with choosing a direction or
- 00:22:29a purpose in life some people come to
- 00:22:31life knowing what they want to eat on
- 00:22:32the menu or they figure it out really
- 00:22:34early on but most have to look at the
- 00:22:36menu and just pick Unsure how it's
- 00:22:40actually going to taste just pick so you
- 00:22:42don't become starved with purpose and
- 00:22:44over time the problem you pick can
- 00:22:46evolve into a purpose all right so
- 00:22:48you've picked a problem to give your
- 00:22:50life purposeful Direction at a high
- 00:22:52broad level now let's turn your purpose
- 00:22:55into a plan through reverse engineering
- 00:22:57The Next Step is to set what's called a
- 00:22:59high hard goal to illustrate how to set
- 00:23:02High hard goals consider the Strange
- 00:23:03Case of the man who ate an airplane the
- 00:23:06first time he swallowed glass he was 9
- 00:23:08years old thus began Michelle lao's
- 00:23:11fondness for eating dangerous objects in
- 00:23:131959 gastroenterologist examined him his
- 00:23:16condition Pika a taste for unusual
- 00:23:20nonnutritive items this launched an
- 00:23:22incredible career mure Mau Mr edol which
- 00:23:25was his nickname was known to eat 2
- 00:23:27pounds of
- 00:23:28every day how well he would reduce metal
- 00:23:32objects into smaller pieces and keep his
- 00:23:35throat lubricated with mineral oil
- 00:23:37throughout his career his diet included
- 00:23:3918 bicycles seven TV sets two beds 15
- 00:23:43Supermarket trolleys one must wonder
- 00:23:46what was going through his mind as he
- 00:23:47munched through the 14th trolley by the
- 00:23:49way a computer a coffin including the
- 00:23:52handles skis and six chandeliers but the
- 00:23:56Pinnacle in 1978 he ate an entire Cessna
- 00:24:00150 airplane more precisely he began
- 00:24:03eating it in 1978 it was a piece by
- 00:24:06piece process that took 2 years in 1980
- 00:24:10he emerged Victorious from the Battle of
- 00:24:12man versus flying machine now how the
- 00:24:14hell did he do this how did Michelle
- 00:24:16manage to pull this off well he used the
- 00:24:17same process we're going to use for
- 00:24:20architecting your goal stack reverse
- 00:24:21engineering reverse engineering turns
- 00:24:24large goals into small achievable steps
- 00:24:26it clarifies the tiny task involved in
- 00:24:29achieving a Titanic goal and sets a
- 00:24:31timeline to get them done but first what
- 00:24:33is your high hard goal what's your
- 00:24:34equivalent of Michelle's airplane well
- 00:24:36in the 1960s Dr Edwin lock conducted
- 00:24:39groundbreaking research on goal setting
- 00:24:41and motivation he found that setting
- 00:24:43specific challenging goals led to higher
- 00:24:45performance than setting easy vague or
- 00:24:48no goals at all Lock's research laid the
- 00:24:50foundation for understanding the
- 00:24:51psychological mechanisms behind
- 00:24:53motivation and performance then the term
- 00:24:56High hard goals coined by sports
- 00:24:57psychologist Stanley beum encapsulates
- 00:25:00the type of goals that lock found most
- 00:25:02effective and that can facilitate flow
- 00:25:04experiences High hard goals are both
- 00:25:06challenging and require significant
- 00:25:08effort pushing individuals to the edge
- 00:25:10of their abilities and demanding full
- 00:25:12concentration and engagement a high goal
- 00:25:15is an ambitious long-term objective that
- 00:25:17takes 1 to 5 years to achieve High hard
- 00:25:19goals force you to grow and develop new
- 00:25:21skills when you pursue High hard goals
- 00:25:23you create the conditions necessary for
- 00:25:25entering Flow State and achieving
- 00:25:26Optimal Performance in Michelle Mr eols
- 00:25:30story eating the airplane was the high
- 00:25:32hard goal Michelle deconstructed the
- 00:25:34parts of the plane with its
- 00:25:35subcomponents then he started with the
- 00:25:37most manageable part ground it down and
- 00:25:40then took his first spoonful of lead you
- 00:25:42want to do the same with your goals from
- 00:25:44airplane to spoonful of dust now let's
- 00:25:47ground it with another example suppose
- 00:25:49you want to start a billion dooll
- 00:25:50climate tech company your high hard goal
- 00:25:52could be build a climate tech company
- 00:25:54that reaches a valuation of a billion
- 00:25:56within 5 years to achieve this high goal
- 00:25:58you need to reverse engineer it and
- 00:26:00break it down to smaller annual goals
- 00:26:02the high hard goal is your airplane but
- 00:26:04we need to work backwards from the
- 00:26:05outcome and grind it down to a spoonful
- 00:26:07of dust in order to eat it using this
- 00:26:10example here are some example annual
- 00:26:13goals year one is to validate problem
- 00:26:16and solution to develop prototypes and
- 00:26:18secure initial funding in year two maybe
- 00:26:20you want to build the team refine the
- 00:26:23product and establish Partnerships and
- 00:26:24in year three you decide you're going to
- 00:26:26scale the business and secure
- 00:26:28significant funding now you can see that
- 00:26:30each year builds upon the previous one
- 00:26:32then the next step is to take the year
- 00:26:33one annual goal and break it down into
- 00:26:35quarterly goals here are examples of
- 00:26:37what your quarterly goals for the year
- 00:26:39one may be maybe you decide that in
- 00:26:42quarter 1 you're going to conduct market
- 00:26:43research identify target market and then
- 00:26:45Define the problem to be solved and in
- 00:26:47quarter 2 based on the defined problem
- 00:26:49you're going to develop a prototype
- 00:26:50solution and gather user feedback maybe
- 00:26:52in quarter three you're going to refine
- 00:26:54the Prototype based on user feedback and
- 00:26:56each quarter builds upon the
- 00:26:58achievements of the previous one
- 00:26:59creating a logical progression towards
- 00:27:01the ultimate goal now continuing with
- 00:27:03our reverse engineering let's create
- 00:27:04monthly goals that directly support the
- 00:27:06q1 goal month one maybe you identify
- 00:27:09target market and conduct 40 customer
- 00:27:11interviews to gather insights about
- 00:27:13their needs and pain points in mode two
- 00:27:16maybe you analyze interview data to
- 00:27:17identify common themes and Define a
- 00:27:19clear problem statement and maybe mode
- 00:27:20three you ideate potential solutions to
- 00:27:23the defined problem and craft a unique
- 00:27:25value proposition that sets Your
- 00:27:26solution apart now next next let's plan
- 00:27:29weekly goals that directly lead to
- 00:27:30achieving the month one goals week one
- 00:27:33maybe you decide you're going to create
- 00:27:34a customer interview script and identify
- 00:27:3650 potential interviewees who fit the
- 00:27:38target market criteria week two you're
- 00:27:40going to conduct the first 10 customer
- 00:27:42interviews using the script you get the
- 00:27:44idea for week three and for week four by
- 00:27:47ensuring that each level of the goal
- 00:27:49stack directly supports and leads to the
- 00:27:51next completing each goal set the stage
- 00:27:53for the next much like Domino's falling
- 00:27:55in a precisely planned sequence now bear
- 00:27:58in mind as you do this you don't want to
- 00:28:00get too caught up in perfecting every
- 00:28:02detail up front your reverse engineering
- 00:28:04doesn't need to be Flawless things will
- 00:28:06become clearer As you move forward think
- 00:28:08of it less like waterfall project
- 00:28:10development where you plan out
- 00:28:11everything in detail before even
- 00:28:13starting and then follow that plan
- 00:28:14exactly despite learning new things and
- 00:28:17much more like The Lean Startup approach
- 00:28:19you set a Direction but you hold the
- 00:28:21plans lightly refining as you go the AC
- 00:28:24of moving ahead will illuminate the
- 00:28:26right path the skill is to approximate
- 00:28:29as close as possible to what the next
- 00:28:32step may be and as far as possible out
- 00:28:34in the chain of course it's not going to
- 00:28:36be perfect you can't read the future but
- 00:28:37you want to map it out in a lot more
- 00:28:39detail than most do regardless so don't
- 00:28:42put too much pressure on yourself sketch
- 00:28:43out your best estimation of the reverse
- 00:28:45engineered sub goals needed to reach
- 00:28:47your high hard goals with that in mind
- 00:28:49at this point you should have built out
- 00:28:50a goal stack comprised of a series of
- 00:28:53steps that lead to your high hard goal
- 00:28:55with the goal stack you've anchored
- 00:28:57yourself to a goal to structure your
- 00:28:59Consciousness the first step in becoming
- 00:29:01goal directed but now how do we convert
- 00:29:03this goal stack into daily hourly and
- 00:29:05minute by- minute actions that actually
- 00:29:07lead us up the staircase and attain that
- 00:29:09critical minute to decade alignment well
- 00:29:12this brings us the absolute core driver
- 00:29:14of Peak Performance and productivity
- 00:29:16which is to commit the goal directed
- 00:29:19actions now that you've built your goal
- 00:29:20stack you've given some longer term
- 00:29:22structure to your Consciousness you
- 00:29:24still have to deal with what to do in
- 00:29:25any given moment what's right in front
- 00:29:27of you you still to deal with the
- 00:29:28demands of the day and the dozens of
- 00:29:30decisions that come along with that how
- 00:29:31do you ensure that the actions you take
- 00:29:33and what you work on will actually lead
- 00:29:35to you reaching your goals well think of
- 00:29:37your productivity as a car Elite
- 00:29:39performers spend nearly all their time
- 00:29:41driving directly to their destination
- 00:29:43taking the best route possible on the
- 00:29:45other hand most people spend a tiny
- 00:29:47percentage of their time actually
- 00:29:49driving directly to the destination 90%
- 00:29:51of it is spent driving in circles down
- 00:29:53culdesac turning down the wrong roads or
- 00:29:55crashing into trees and having to
- 00:29:56reverse the this I remember during my
- 00:29:59early years in business I was at a
- 00:30:01business Mastermind at Powder Mountain
- 00:30:02in Utah I was observing two different
- 00:30:05entrepreneurs who had the same goal of
- 00:30:07building their business to eight figures
- 00:30:09in the same industry and I'll keep their
- 00:30:11names private but here's a snapshot how
- 00:30:13they spent their day aor a wakes up and
- 00:30:15spends 15 minutes wondering what the
- 00:30:17most important thing might be to work on
- 00:30:19then takes a break from wondering about
- 00:30:21it and answers all her email that has a
- 00:30:23hunch that it might be good to improve
- 00:30:24her branding because one of the emails
- 00:30:26she just responded to mentioned that
- 00:30:27branding in her company has some room
- 00:30:29for improvement so she spends 90 minutes
- 00:30:31on that then she gets a call from her
- 00:30:33team and oversees what they're doing
- 00:30:34then decides it could be good to explore
- 00:30:36expanding their social media presence so
- 00:30:38she spends a few hours researching
- 00:30:39vendors calling a few of them up but
- 00:30:41then she decides not to continue with
- 00:30:42that she's floating through her day like
- 00:30:44a leaf in the wind without clear
- 00:30:46direction or orientation around gold
- 00:30:48directed actions while entrepreneur B
- 00:30:50knows that from the day before the
- 00:30:52single goal for the business right now
- 00:30:55for this quarter is to increase lead
- 00:30:57generation she also knows that for this
- 00:30:59month the single most important way to
- 00:31:01do that is to focus on the most
- 00:31:02effective marketing channel which is
- 00:31:03Facebook ads she also knows that the
- 00:31:06most important way to improve Facebook
- 00:31:08ads is by rewriting all the ad creative
- 00:31:10so she sits down for 3 hours drops into
- 00:31:13flow and rewrites every ad sends them
- 00:31:15out to her team members to implement and
- 00:31:17then ties up the rest of the Loose Ends
- 00:31:19and finishes her day the night before
- 00:31:21she had determined everything and before
- 00:31:23checking anything she attacks that one
- 00:31:25thing that she knows isn't the thing
- 00:31:27that will drive her her toward that goal
- 00:31:29of getting her business to a figures so
- 00:31:31think of your goal stack as a towering
- 00:31:32stack of dominoes the top of the whole
- 00:31:34structure you need to identify the one
- 00:31:36key Domino that will trigger the best
- 00:31:39cascading Chain Reaction unlike everyday
- 00:31:41tasks that keep you busy but not truly
- 00:31:43progressing these are the tasks that
- 00:31:46directly Propel you toward where you
- 00:31:48want to go with maximum speed these
- 00:31:50Domino toppling tasks are called go
- 00:31:52directed actions a gold directed action
- 00:31:55is simply the action that will progress
- 00:31:57you more toward a given goal than any
- 00:31:59other possible action conceivable it's
- 00:32:02an action that when completed directly
- 00:32:04brings you one step closer to your high
- 00:32:07hard goal or whatever goal it is that
- 00:32:09you're pursuing it's the Domino that
- 00:32:10knocks down the next domino in line most
- 00:32:12effectively tasks that aren't gold
- 00:32:14directed action are the equivalent of
- 00:32:17being hamster on a wheel there's a lot
- 00:32:18of activity and movement But ultimately
- 00:32:20the hamster isn't going anywhere
- 00:32:22performing goal directed actions while
- 00:32:23in a flow state is the Cornerstone of
- 00:32:25Peak Performance now as you're learning
- 00:32:26about goal setting when a quick tell you
- 00:32:28about a goal we have for the channel
- 00:32:30which is to get to a million subscribers
- 00:32:32by the end of the year we're growing
- 00:32:33rapidly and we think we're going to be
- 00:32:35able to do it but only with your help
- 00:32:37and if you're able to help us pull that
- 00:32:38off we will release a free chapter of
- 00:32:41our upcoming book on Flo at the end of
- 00:32:44the year when we hit the million
- 00:32:45subscribers thanks so much for your
- 00:32:46support much love and go ahead hit
- 00:32:49subscribe so we can continue leveling up
- 00:32:51your ability to access Flow State with
- 00:32:53more consistency and reliability once in
- 00:32:56flow within a gold r that action our
- 00:32:58productivity and creativity increases so
- 00:32:59we are both working on the best possible
- 00:33:01thing we can work on then lead us
- 00:33:04directly to the goals and our goal stack
- 00:33:06while also in the most effective State
- 00:33:08of Consciousness possible in doing the
- 00:33:10work go directed actions also ramp up
- 00:33:12what's called perceived importance
- 00:33:14perceived importance is the personal
- 00:33:16significance we assign to an activity
- 00:33:18this Alters our neurochemistry
- 00:33:20increasing dopamine which heightens your
- 00:33:22motivation commitment and concentration
- 00:33:24leading to Greater attention paid to the
- 00:33:26task when you perceive it as more
- 00:33:28important which in turn leads to faster
- 00:33:30entry into Flow State so the more goal
- 00:33:32directed your actions are the greater
- 00:33:34the dopamine release the more flow you
- 00:33:36will get and the easier it will become
- 00:33:38to get into a flow state in the first
- 00:33:40place and this is much of the reason why
- 00:33:41we focused on developing a minimum
- 00:33:43viable purpose by picking a problem
- 00:33:45within the goal stock purpose increases
- 00:33:47the perceived importance of the task the
- 00:33:48meaningfulness of the given goal
- 00:33:50directed action which attracts our
- 00:33:52attention and drives us into a flow
- 00:33:54State at this point you've grasped the
- 00:33:56significant impact that go directed
- 00:33:58actions have on entering Flow State and
- 00:34:00boosting your productivity so how do you
- 00:34:02know what your go directed actions are
- 00:34:03well that brings us to the last step in
- 00:34:06becoming gold directed which is to
- 00:34:08separate planning from doing most
- 00:34:10professionals approach their work like
- 00:34:12shotgunners against a herd of zombies in
- 00:34:15a video game they pray and spray and the
- 00:34:17pray having to react to every zombie as
- 00:34:19a matter of life or death when you
- 00:34:21become gold erected you become more like
- 00:34:23a sniper you're high up in the sniper's
- 00:34:25net able to survey the whole landscape
- 00:34:28on your time with no hurry you can take
- 00:34:31a deep breath hone in and then bam knock
- 00:34:34out the target with maximum efficiency
- 00:34:38to move from reacting to deciding we
- 00:34:40need to separate planning from doing
- 00:34:44Each of which require different modes of
- 00:34:46cognition Divergent thinking is creative
- 00:34:48where we link disperate and farf flowing
- 00:34:50ideas to form something new on Virgin
- 00:34:53thinking is when our attention Narrows
- 00:34:55in on a single thing but both states are
- 00:34:58critical but they don't blend well
- 00:35:00together we want to use one or the other
- 00:35:02diverge when planning converge when
- 00:35:05doing separating these two brain States
- 00:35:08through separating planning from doing
- 00:35:11free us to act without questioning
- 00:35:14whether or not that we're about to do is
- 00:35:17the best thing we could do now according
- 00:35:18to Dr canan's dual process Theory our
- 00:35:22cognition involves two distinct systems
- 00:35:24the fast intuitive system one for doing
- 00:35:27and the slow analytical system to for
- 00:35:29planning separating planning and doing
- 00:35:31allows each system to function optimally
- 00:35:32without interference and John sw's
- 00:35:34cognitive load Theory posits that are
- 00:35:36working memory has limited capacity and
- 00:35:39trying to plan and act simultaneously
- 00:35:41increases cognitive load the amount of
- 00:35:43information we're trying to hold our
- 00:35:44minds at any given time which
- 00:35:46dramatically impairs performance and
- 00:35:47blocks flow conversely decreasing
- 00:35:50cognitive load increases our ability to
- 00:35:52slide into a flow state so separating
- 00:35:54planning from doing is critical because
- 00:35:57it all so eliminates reactivity the more
- 00:36:00strategic you are the less often
- 00:36:02reactionary tasks will occur you then
- 00:36:04get to treat each gold directed action
- 00:36:06as an event this Clarity reduces
- 00:36:07overwhelm and prevents you from working
- 00:36:09excessive hours and improves your
- 00:36:11quality of life immensely you don't need
- 00:36:13to do as many things when you find gold
- 00:36:15directed actions that maximally Advance
- 00:36:17you toward your goals all the wasted
- 00:36:19effort that is non- gold directed and
- 00:36:22start to drop
- 00:36:24away now as things get overwhelming and
- 00:36:27busy to invest even more in planning to
- 00:36:29do this at the end of each work day take
- 00:36:3110 minutes to plan tomorrow's gold
- 00:36:33directed actions this will ensure you
- 00:36:35always working on the most go directed
- 00:36:37actions while in Flow State which
- 00:36:38amplifies your productivity while
- 00:36:40working on those go directed actions
- 00:36:41think of it kind of like a power down
- 00:36:43ritual there's a few steps to it the
- 00:36:45first is to avoid gold drip this this
- 00:36:47step involves revisiting your goal stock
- 00:36:49review your long-term goals at the end
- 00:36:50of each day the purpose is to check your
- 00:36:52daily activities against your high hard
- 00:36:54goals to ensure alignment it helps in
- 00:36:56identifying gos drift deviations from
- 00:36:59your long-term objectives so you can
- 00:37:00course correct this review acts as a
- 00:37:02compass keeping you truly focused on
- 00:37:05what matters most all you do here is
- 00:37:07pull up your goal stock and make sure
- 00:37:09that you're on course hitting your goals
- 00:37:11based on all of the reverse engineering
- 00:37:13you've already done the next step in the
- 00:37:14power down ritual is to line up The
- 00:37:16Dominoes this is where you find and line
- 00:37:17up The Dominoes such that you can flick
- 00:37:20one and it'll knock down the next and
- 00:37:22the next most effectively identify the
- 00:37:24three maximum three most critical your
- 00:37:27directed actions for the following day
- 00:37:30these should be tasks that have the
- 00:37:31greatest movement toward your long-term
- 00:37:33goals that you can possibly conceive of
- 00:37:35these tasks should ideally be
- 00:37:36challenging yet achievable aligning with
- 00:37:38your skills to do this take the weekly
- 00:37:41goals you've identified as part of your
- 00:37:42goal stack and break them down as a
- 00:37:44daily goal directed actions what we'll
- 00:37:46do here is focus on one to three
- 00:37:48critical tasks no more than three each
- 00:37:50day that will move you closer to your
- 00:37:52weekly Target building on our example of
- 00:37:54a climate tech company here are the
- 00:37:56example daily go directed actions for
- 00:37:59week one of the goal stack Monday it
- 00:38:01might be to draft customer interview
- 00:38:03scripts create a list of 50 potential
- 00:38:05interviewees Tuesday it might be to
- 00:38:07revise and finalize our interview script
- 00:38:09based on team feedback and prioritize
- 00:38:11our top 20 interviewees and fine contact
- 00:38:14info and so forth for Wednesday and
- 00:38:16onward now daily go directed actions
- 00:38:19turn your high hard goals into bit-sized
- 00:38:21achievable tasks the next part is to set
- 00:38:24clear goals each goal directed action
- 00:38:27clear goals are quintessential flow
- 00:38:29trigger unlike bigger goals like those
- 00:38:31you set on a daily and weekly level and
- 00:38:33Beyond a clear goal is an action to take
- 00:38:36like kicking a soccer ball into the net
- 00:38:38not broad outcomes like winning the
- 00:38:40soccer match now the trouble most people
- 00:38:42have when trying to set clear goals is
- 00:38:44they don't set them anywhere near
- 00:38:45clearly enough the key is to set wildly
- 00:38:49specific clear goals for each of your
- 00:38:50big gold directed actions that way the
- 00:38:53brain doesn't have to expend resources
- 00:38:54in wondering how why or what to do to
- 00:38:57achieve this you want to break the task
- 00:38:59down into micro goals even if the task
- 00:39:01will only take an hour this way you get
- 00:39:03a steady drip of dopamine for example
- 00:39:05maybe the first step is to write the
- 00:39:07intro to the presentation the second
- 00:39:08clear goal is add the data from past
- 00:39:11client results into the presentation
- 00:39:12third clear goal is to design the
- 00:39:14graphics with our brand colors this
- 00:39:16doesn't need to take long you can write
- 00:39:17these clear goals down within 60 seconds
- 00:39:20then take the first step to the first
- 00:39:22step building on the presentation
- 00:39:23example the first step to the first step
- 00:39:25is opening up a word processor how in
- 00:39:27the document and saving it in the right
- 00:39:29folder it's part of your power down
- 00:39:30ritual when you map out your gold
- 00:39:32director actions with these wildly clear
- 00:39:34minuscule clear goals within the task
- 00:39:37and take the first step of the first
- 00:39:38step you can dive right into work the
- 00:39:40next day and get into flow think of it
- 00:39:42like having a personal trainer in the
- 00:39:44gym all you need to do is lift the
- 00:39:45weights they move you each machine load
- 00:39:48up the weights and all you need to do is
- 00:39:49push compare this to wondering around
- 00:39:51the gym trying to configure different
- 00:39:53machines wondering how many sets you
- 00:39:54should do of each thing how much weight
- 00:39:56you should add whether you did too many
- 00:39:58bicep curls or not enough legs on and on
- 00:40:00and on clear goals are would help you
- 00:40:02turn gold directed actions into
- 00:40:03something similar the final step of this
- 00:40:05power down ritual is to clear out any
- 00:40:07undone tasks and tie down all Loose Ends
- 00:40:10so you have a free and clear runway for
- 00:40:12working on gold directed actions the
- 00:40:14next day the average knowledge worker
- 00:40:16never does anything close to this power
- 00:40:18down ritual at best they'll make a
- 00:40:20somewhat arbitrary bullet list on a
- 00:40:22Monday often determined by a superior or
- 00:40:24whatever mood they happen to be in in
- 00:40:25the moment it's not all anchored to the
- 00:40:27long longterm Vision it's not reverse
- 00:40:28engineered and it's not scheduled into
- 00:40:30the calendar so that it actually gets
- 00:40:32done on the other hand the most elite
- 00:40:34performance on Earth are the most gold
- 00:40:36directed that's just how it is there's a
- 00:40:38conscientiousness about how each moment
- 00:40:40is being spent and the degree to which
- 00:40:41it actually has to be thought out as to
- 00:40:45whether it will move them maximally
