Vídeo de preguntas y respuestas

  • What is the difference between saturation and vibrance?

Saturation increases the intensity of all colors equally, while vibrance selectively boosts less saturated colors and protects skin tones from becoming oversaturated.

  • How do you identify oversaturated colors in an image?

By using a vibrance adjustment layer set to difference blend mode, you can see which colors are popping through a black layer, indicating oversaturation.

  • Why is vibrance preferred over saturation in some cases?

Vibrance prevents skin tones from becoming oversaturated and adjusts less saturated colors more than already saturated ones.

  • What is the purpose of the difference blend mode?

The difference blend mode subtracts colors to create a black image, revealing oversaturated colors as you increase saturation.

  • How can I prevent oversaturation in my photos?

Use the vibrance adjustment layer with the difference blend mode to monitor color saturation and stop adjusting when colors start to poke through.

  • Can this technique be used for portrait photography?

Yes, it helps maintain natural skin tones while enhancing other colors in the image.

  • What should I do if my colors look unnatural?

Walk away from your work and return later to reassess; using the vibrance technique can help avoid 'circus vomit' colors.

  • Is this technique suitable for all types of photography?

Yes, it can be applied across various genres of photography to manage color saturation effectively.

  • What tools do I need to use this technique?

You need Photoshop and access to the vibrance adjustment layer.

  • How can I learn more about color theory?

what in the world could this all black
  • 00:00:02
layer teach us about the saturation in
  • 00:00:04
    our photographs well
  • 00:00:06
i'm about to show you working with color
  • 00:00:08
especially saturation can be a difficult
  • 00:00:10
thing to handle in any genre of
  • 00:00:11
    photography especially when you're first
  • 00:00:13
starting out many of us seasoned
  • 00:00:14
photographers have been doing this for a
  • 00:00:16
while can just look at an image and say
  • 00:00:18
that color is too oversaturated and the
  • 00:00:20
person who produces like wait a sec i
  • 00:00:22
like how beautiful that color is how do
  • 00:00:23
you know it's oversaturated and we just
  • 00:00:25
say well i can just tell is that really
  • 00:00:27
    helping someone who doesn't understand
  • 00:00:29
color no i've got this really weird
  • 00:00:32
physical thing that happens to me with
  • 00:00:33
color hear me out and don't try this at
  • 00:00:35
home please i did this when i was a kid
  • 00:00:38
as a kid my brother dared me to take a
  • 00:00:40
9-volt battery and stick both ends on my
  • 00:00:42
tongue and see what happens i got this
  • 00:00:44
    kind of jolting shock
  • 00:00:46
well that's what happens when i see
  • 00:00:48
images that are a little over saturated
  • 00:00:50
is that a superpower that i gained from
  • 00:00:52
    a 9 volt battery as a child i don't know
  • 00:00:55
but what i can tell you is that when
  • 00:00:56
colors in an image are over saturated it
  • 00:00:58
makes me physically feel something that
  • 00:01:00
i don't like all jokes aside not
  • 00:01:02
everyone has that superhuman ability so
  • 00:01:04
let's take a look at how this works
  • 00:01:06
first i'm going to show you this
  • 00:01:07
technique that i've just developed and
  • 00:01:09
i'm going to show you why it works and
  • 00:01:11
why it can be helpful to you this will
  • 00:01:12
give you data as to how an image is over
  • 00:01:15
saturated and i think you're really
  • 00:01:17
going to appreciate it so take a look at
  • 00:01:19
this image it doesn't appear as if the
  • 00:01:21
colors in the image are over saturated
  • 00:01:24
at first glance it might seem as if
  • 00:01:26
maybe the greens are a little bit on the
  • 00:01:28
saturated side but our magentas and our
  • 00:01:30
blues and our purples and even some of
  • 00:01:32
our yellows are not quite there yet so
  • 00:01:34
this technique i've developed you go
  • 00:01:35
down to the adjustment layers you put a
  • 00:01:38
    vibrance adjustment layer on there
  • 00:01:40
now we're going to change the blend mode
  • 00:01:42
to the difference blend mode you should
  • 00:01:45
    see an all black image
  • 00:01:47
now as you move the saturation up
  • 00:01:50
you should start to see colors start to
  • 00:01:52
appear here we might have to look really
  • 00:01:54
closely at this i'm going to zoom in you
  • 00:01:56
see how blue starts to appear here the
  • 00:01:58
color blue is not important in this case
  • 00:02:01
what is important is seeing what colors
  • 00:02:03
    are
  • 00:02:04
poking through this black layer think
  • 00:02:06
about this like a mask okay when you put
  • 00:02:08
a mask on something and you make it all
  • 00:02:10
black the things that you reveal through
  • 00:02:12
there with the color white or even gray
  • 00:02:14
for that matter are the things that are
  • 00:02:16
going to receive the effect of whatever
  • 00:02:17
it is that you're doing so in this case
  • 00:02:18
as we increase the saturation we start
  • 00:02:20
to see a color kind of popping towards
  • 00:02:23
us that's not actually the color blue if
  • 00:02:25
we make this the normal blend mode
  • 00:02:27
and then turn this on and off you can
  • 00:02:29
see it's these colors here that are
  • 00:02:31
starting to get a little bit over
  • 00:02:32
saturated i'm going to change that back
  • 00:02:34
to the difference blend mode here okay
  • 00:02:36
    we'll zoom back out
  • 00:02:39
and now if we increase the vibrance you
  • 00:02:40
can also see other colors in the image
  • 00:02:42
that are starting to get a little bit
  • 00:02:44
more saturated up here in the sky
  • 00:02:46
changes to the normal blend mode
  • 00:02:48
    congratulations we have a successfully
  • 00:02:51
saturated image but we have no idea what
  • 00:02:53
we just did or what any of that means to
  • 00:02:55
get it to this point so let's take a
  • 00:02:57
deeper dive into this i'm going to use
  • 00:02:58
    this test image here
  • 00:03:00
first off we're going to be using the
  • 00:03:01
    vibrance adjustment layer i have
  • 00:03:03
experimented with this with the hsl
  • 00:03:05
adjustment layer and it does not work
  • 00:03:07
    the same way
  • 00:03:08
not the same way at all so we're going
  • 00:03:10
to want to use the vibrance adjustment
  • 00:03:12
    layer okay
  • 00:03:13
with the vibrance adjustment layer we
  • 00:03:15
are going to change that to
  • 00:03:17
    the difference blend mode
  • 00:03:19
now before we talk about vibrance and
  • 00:03:21
    saturation the difference between the
  • 00:03:22
two let's talk about the difference
  • 00:03:24
blend mode in consulting with the
  • 00:03:25
    helpx.adobe.com
  • 00:03:27
blog which i frequently use anytime i
  • 00:03:29
need a detailed explanation about what
  • 00:03:31
is happening in photoshop the difference
  • 00:03:33
blend mode it looks at the color
  • 00:03:35
information in each channel and it
  • 00:03:37
    subtracts either the blend color
  • 00:03:39
from the base color or the base color
  • 00:03:42
from the blend color depending on which
  • 00:03:45
    has the greatest brightness value
  • 00:03:48
    okay blake explain that
  • 00:03:50
all right so what's happening here when
  • 00:03:52
we set this vibrance to the difference
  • 00:03:54
    blend mode essentially what's happening
  • 00:03:56
is it's creating a copy of all of the
  • 00:03:59
things that we have in the background
  • 00:04:01
    layer here
  • 00:04:02
    that's what this vibrance adjustment
  • 00:04:03
layer is it's basically think of it like
  • 00:04:05
a carbon copy of everything that's
  • 00:04:07
happening underneath it that's when it's
  • 00:04:09
set to the difference blend mode it is
  • 00:04:10
subtracting all colors all light to make
  • 00:04:13
it black so remember here it says
  • 00:04:16
subtracts either the blend color from
  • 00:04:18
the base color or the base color from
  • 00:04:19
the blend color depending on which has a
  • 00:04:21
greater brightness value at this point
  • 00:04:23
neither of them have a greater
  • 00:04:24
    brightness value and that's because
  • 00:04:25
they're both the exact same thing but as
  • 00:04:28
we increase the saturation in this you
  • 00:04:31
can start to see that something is
  • 00:04:32
    getting brighter
  • 00:04:34
in this case the colors are getting more
  • 00:04:36
saturated which does actually bring on a
  • 00:04:38
little bit more brightness with that
  • 00:04:39
    color as well
  • 00:04:41
so what this is telling us is that as we
  • 00:04:43
    increase the saturation
  • 00:04:44
anything that is remaining black is not
  • 00:04:47
as saturated as the colors that are
  • 00:04:49
    pulling through and popping forward
  • 00:04:51
so when we look at this we can see in
  • 00:04:52
our test image here that these colors
  • 00:04:54
because they are the purest form of
  • 00:04:55
    saturation
  • 00:04:56
even as we barely adjusted this we
  • 00:04:58
started to see that these colors were
  • 00:05:00
    popping through why because they're
  • 00:05:02
already the full potency of that color
  • 00:05:04
they can possibly be they're already
  • 00:05:06
full 100 saturation okay now what
  • 00:05:09
happens we increase the vibrance as we
  • 00:05:11
increase the vibrance you'll see that
  • 00:05:12
    these colors remain the same
  • 00:05:15
what the heck is happening here
  • 00:05:17
    this explains what vibrance is
  • 00:05:19
vibrance is a very unique slider that
  • 00:05:22
adobe has included in many of their
  • 00:05:24
    applications to include lightroom and
  • 00:05:26
adobe camera raw what vibrance is again
  • 00:05:29
    consulting with the helpx.adobe.com
  • 00:05:31
it adjusts the saturation so that
  • 00:05:33
clipping is minimized as colors approach
  • 00:05:35
    full saturation
  • 00:05:37
    this adjustment increases the saturation
  • 00:05:39
of less saturated colors more than
  • 00:05:42
    colors that are already saturated
  • 00:05:44
vibrance also prevents skin tones from
  • 00:05:46
    becoming over saturated we will
  • 00:05:48
definitely talk about how this technique
  • 00:05:49
can help portraits in a minute here but
  • 00:05:51
what we're seeing here with this
  • 00:05:52
technique that i'm laying out for you
  • 00:05:54
now the difference blend modes sets the
  • 00:05:56
base for us the base color or base
  • 00:05:59
    colors are what's underneath this
  • 00:06:01
    vibrance adjustment layer the blend
  • 00:06:03
colors are what's inside this vibrance
  • 00:06:05
adjustment layer so now we're doing here
  • 00:06:07
let's go ahead and reset all of this
  • 00:06:08
okay we have just made a direct copy of
  • 00:06:10
everything that's below that's what an
  • 00:06:12
adjustment layer does until you make an
  • 00:06:13
adjustment to it it's just a carbon copy
  • 00:06:15
    of everything that's underneath it
  • 00:06:17
    we're subtracting all colors out
  • 00:06:19
as we increase the vibrance you'll see
  • 00:06:20
the colors that are not very saturated
  • 00:06:22
in the background that are starting to
  • 00:06:24
    become more saturated
  • 00:06:26
we can use this as a checks and balance
  • 00:06:28
system when we change this back to the
  • 00:06:29
normal blend mode you can see here that
  • 00:06:31
our blues are definitely more saturated
  • 00:06:34
    now and so are yellows
  • 00:06:36
and that's only with the vibrance
  • 00:06:37
    adjustment layer
  • 00:06:38
what's happened here is that those are
  • 00:06:40
the colors that were not as saturated as
  • 00:06:41
the other colors in the image therefore
  • 00:06:43
as we increase the vibrance they get
  • 00:06:45
    more saturated
  • 00:06:47
why do we need to use this difference
  • 00:06:48
blend mode then blake well with this
  • 00:06:50
technique what it does is it gives us a
  • 00:06:51
    baseline to show us
  • 00:06:53
how much saturation we can give
  • 00:06:55
    something before it gets oversaturated
  • 00:06:57
let's use this as an example here what
  • 00:06:59
i've done with this example is i've made
  • 00:07:01
the exact same image of behringer winery
  • 00:07:04
on the left hand side was the original
  • 00:07:05
on the right hand side as an over
  • 00:07:07
saturated maybe someone who went a
  • 00:07:09
little heavy a lot heavy-handed with
  • 00:07:11
    their saturation
  • 00:07:12
let's see what this means here
  • 00:07:14
if we turn on this vibrance adjustment
  • 00:07:16
layer that is set to the difference
  • 00:07:18
blend mode you'll notice that everything
  • 00:07:19
is black and then you'll scratch your
  • 00:07:21
head and say wait a second blake
  • 00:07:23
you just told me in this example
  • 00:07:25
that when this was set to the difference
  • 00:07:27
blend mode the things that were more
  • 00:07:28
saturated started to pop through why is
  • 00:07:30
this not doing that how can i use this
  • 00:07:31
as a checks and balance system well this
  • 00:07:33
is doing exactly what the difference
  • 00:07:34
blend mode is supposed to do it's taking
  • 00:07:37
all the base information which is below
  • 00:07:39
and subtracting it from the blend
  • 00:07:41
information which is happening here so
  • 00:07:43
    we're getting black
  • 00:07:45
but watch what happens as we start to
  • 00:07:47
    increase the saturation
  • 00:07:49
ah this is where things get a little
  • 00:07:50
    interesting
  • 00:07:52
you can see here in this image here
  • 00:07:53
we're starting to get some artifacting
  • 00:07:55
in the colors here the blue in the
  • 00:07:57
foreground it's not even blue it's
  • 00:07:58
actually the inverse color of that which
  • 00:08:00
is yellow but that color is starting to
  • 00:08:02
get very bright but in the image on the
  • 00:08:05
left it actually looks okay and almost
  • 00:08:08
pure black if we zoom in here we can see
  • 00:08:09
    the difference here between what's
  • 00:08:11
happening in this sky area there's a
  • 00:08:12
little bit of haze right here of blue
  • 00:08:14
but then this has a lot okay what this
  • 00:08:16
is telling us if we take a look at the
  • 00:08:18
normal blend mode on this change it from
  • 00:08:20
difference to normal is that this is
  • 00:08:22
    clearly getting oversaturated
  • 00:08:24
using this method as a base right here
  • 00:08:27
we can see that this image on the right
  • 00:08:29
    doesn't need this much saturation
  • 00:08:32
so as we increase the saturation on this
  • 00:08:34
if you start to see color poking through
  • 00:08:36
a little bit more than a faint amount of
  • 00:08:38
    color that's that's where you're going
  • 00:08:40
to have your stopping point on the
  • 00:08:41
saturation level now why i'm moving
  • 00:08:44
saturation up vibrance here i'm trying
  • 00:08:46
to set the baseline of the most potent
  • 00:08:48
    color
  • 00:08:49
and increasing the saturation of that
  • 00:08:51
most potent color and then i can use
  • 00:08:53
vibrance to increase the saturation of
  • 00:08:56
the less potent colors that are around
  • 00:08:58
    it
  • 00:08:58
if i don't want to increase the potent
  • 00:09:00
colors at all i just drop the saturation
  • 00:09:02
down and use vibrance as my adjustment
  • 00:09:05
and then when i change this to the
  • 00:09:07
normal blend mode you'll see that
  • 00:09:08
especially if we look at the image on
  • 00:09:09
the left we get a boost of color that is
  • 00:09:12
    again appealing and not off-putting
  • 00:09:15
let's look at this one more time but on
  • 00:09:17
    a portrait image
  • 00:09:19
this woman looks like she is ready to go
  • 00:09:21
to target i'm just kidding if my wife
  • 00:09:23
went to target like this i think i would
  • 00:09:25
ask her where she was actually going but
  • 00:09:27
i'm going to go ahead and put a vibrance
  • 00:09:30
adjustment layer on here i'm going to
  • 00:09:31
change this to the difference blend mode
  • 00:09:34
why i chose this image is because it's
  • 00:09:35
got skin tones in it and from what we
  • 00:09:37
recall from the vibrance adjustment it
  • 00:09:39
    increases saturation while preventing
  • 00:09:43
    skin tones from becoming oversaturated
  • 00:09:46
so let's see how this works with the
  • 00:09:47
difference blend mode with this checks
  • 00:09:49
and balance system that we've created
  • 00:09:50
    here for increasing our saturation
  • 00:09:52
    without blowing out our viewer's
  • 00:09:53
eyeballs okay so watch what happens i
  • 00:09:56
increase the vibrance you'll start to
  • 00:09:57
see here that we get this faint outline
  • 00:09:59
of the face but what colors are starting
  • 00:10:01
    to pop through
  • 00:10:02
the colors on her fingernails the color
  • 00:10:04
of her makeup that is really starting to
  • 00:10:07
    pop through
  • 00:10:08
her skin tone is not popping through as
  • 00:10:10
much it clearly is not as potent as what
  • 00:10:13
we see on her makeup on her face her
  • 00:10:15
lips and her fingers but as we increase
  • 00:10:17
the saturation it is not going to
  • 00:10:19
account for that skin tone there it's
  • 00:10:21
just going to say brighten all the
  • 00:10:23
    colors
  • 00:10:24
this is where you need to play this
  • 00:10:25
    healthy game of balance
  • 00:10:27
    balance between vibrance and saturation
  • 00:10:30
we'll use the saturation adjustment to
  • 00:10:32
increase all of the colors equally
  • 00:10:34
regardless of their potency and we'll
  • 00:10:36
use vibrance to only increase those ones
  • 00:10:39
that we want to get a little bit more
  • 00:10:40
potent but leave the higher saturated
  • 00:10:43
ones not necessarily alone but don't
  • 00:10:45
have them increase as much it's kind of
  • 00:10:47
like a governor that is set on your most
  • 00:10:50
    saturated colors in your image
  • 00:10:52
so if we change this to the normal blend
  • 00:10:54
mode you'll see the difference between
  • 00:10:55
    saturation
  • 00:10:57
how it's boosting all the colors plus
  • 00:10:59
    the colors in her face
  • 00:11:00
    and vibrance how it's definitely
  • 00:11:02
boosting the colors in her face
  • 00:11:04
but it's making sure that the colors
  • 00:11:06
that are around her face boost more
  • 00:11:08
prominently and more powerfully than the
  • 00:11:10
skin tones in her face but if we move
  • 00:11:13
this vibrance up and it only made all of
  • 00:11:15
the colors more saturated except for the
  • 00:11:17
skin tones this would look really odd it
  • 00:11:19
would almost make her face look pale and
  • 00:11:21
ghostly so there's a slight amount of
  • 00:11:24
boost that is in that is given to skin
  • 00:11:26
    tones within the vibrance adjustment
  • 00:11:27
    layer this technique is incredibly
  • 00:11:29
simple and easy a vibrance adjustment
  • 00:11:32
layer with the difference blend mode
  • 00:11:35
    that's it
  • 00:11:36
then as we increase the saturation
  • 00:11:38
increase the vibrance we can see our
  • 00:11:40
colors as they get more saturated
  • 00:11:42
it gives us a checks and balance because
  • 00:11:44
we can't always see the colors by
  • 00:11:46
themselves getting bright in our face
  • 00:11:49
especially if we sit here and work on it
  • 00:11:50
long enough those colors will lie to us
  • 00:11:52
our brain will lie to us and it'll start
  • 00:11:54
to make all those colors appear normal
  • 00:11:56
it's not until we walk away and come
  • 00:11:57
back that we're like oh my gosh what was
  • 00:11:59
i thinking this looks like circus vomit
  • 00:12:00
and i put it on instagram i want to
  • 00:12:02
prevent you from circus vomit saturated
  • 00:12:04
colors this is a quick clever technique
  • 00:12:06
let me show you one more time on this
  • 00:12:08
image okay so i'm gonna go and add a
  • 00:12:10
vibrance adjustment layer set this to
  • 00:12:12
    the difference blend mode
  • 00:12:14
now i want this image to be a little bit
  • 00:12:16
more potent but i don't want it to be
  • 00:12:18
over saturated so i'm gonna start with
  • 00:12:20
my vibrance because that's the colors
  • 00:12:21
that don't quite have that i'm gonna
  • 00:12:23
stop once i start to see those colors
  • 00:12:25
poking through i can see them kind of
  • 00:12:26
poking through this little black mask
  • 00:12:28
here i'll zoom in so you can see that
  • 00:12:30
    okay
  • 00:12:31
and then i'm gonna increase my
  • 00:12:32
    saturation just a little bit
  • 00:12:34
that's it once i start to see colors
  • 00:12:36
start to poke through this black veil
  • 00:12:38
that we have here i've gone far enough
  • 00:12:42
i'll turn this back to normal and you
  • 00:12:43
    can see the difference
  • 00:12:45
beautiful color saturation every time in
  • 00:12:48
