00:00:00
I've been dealing with vestibular
00:00:02
migraine, which is basically 24/7
00:00:06
dizziness, vertigo. Some days are are so
00:00:09
bad I can't even walk. You know, I've
00:00:12
been getting a lot of questions about my
00:00:14
health and stuff. Just know that I'm not
00:00:16
I'm not dying. I'm not like deathly ill
00:00:18
or anything, but I'm I'm making it
00:00:21
through and uh it's bearable and and
00:00:24
that's, you know, that's all I can ask
00:00:25
for right now is is to be able to
00:00:27
function. I think that it's it's even
00:00:30
more complicated for someone that
00:00:32
already has like depression and anxiety
00:00:34
like myself. It's really isolating. I
00:00:37
mean, I like being by myself, but it's
00:00:39
not healthy. It's not good for me. All
00:00:42
right, it's time to address the obvious
00:00:44
question. Where the heck is Brad? And
00:00:46
who the heck is this guy talking to us?
00:00:48
Me. I'm referring to me. We've seen your
00:00:50
comments and we love that you love Brad.
00:00:53
Some of you have made that abundantly
00:00:54
clear. Well, let me put your minds to
00:00:56
ease and explain what's going on with
00:00:58
Brad, where he's at, and of course,
00:01:00
what's going on with the channel. So,
00:01:01
Brad is very much alive and well. And
00:01:04
no, he did not sell off the channel.
00:01:06
Well, not exactly. It's a little bit
00:01:07
more complicated than that. So, let me
00:01:09
explain. Brad is still very much active
00:01:11
and working on videos and courses. After
00:01:14
all, it hasn't been that long since he's
00:01:16
posted his last video. But, there are
00:01:18
going to be some changes made to the
00:01:19
channel that are going to be good for
00:01:20
everybody who's been a supporter for
00:01:22
some time, and of course, Brad himself.
00:01:25
So, for nearly a decade, Brad has
00:01:27
dedicated his life to putting out high
00:01:29
quality videos. From in-depth series to
00:01:31
crash courses and full-on projects on
00:01:34
YouTube, totaling over 224 million views
00:01:37
to date and also being one of the top
00:01:39
Udemy instructors in the world with over
00:01:42
500,000 students. All of this while
00:01:44
raising a family and dealing with
00:01:46
personal issues that Brad has been very
00:01:48
open about. If you've been following the
00:01:50
channel for some time, you've probably
00:01:52
already noticed that Brad isn't posting
00:01:54
as much as he used to with longer gaps
00:01:57
in between these videos. And one of the
00:01:59
things that people don't realize is that
00:02:00
Brad has been a one-man operation for
00:02:02
years. So it shouldn't come as a
00:02:04
surprise to anyone that dealing with all
00:02:07
these courses and having to work on the
00:02:09
content, update them while managing
00:02:11
hundreds of thousands of students and
00:02:13
still maintaining a YouTube channel with
00:02:15
all the production that goes into it
00:02:17
would cause someone to burn out. So this
00:02:20
has been the reason for the change over
00:02:21
the last couple of years and the pace in
00:02:24
production. The good news is that Brad
00:02:26
has made impressive steps in his
00:02:27
personal life and in his health and is
00:02:30
doing much better. He's changed up his
00:02:32
diet. He's hitting the gym and honestly
00:02:34
looks like an entirely new Brad. But
00:02:37
just because things got better doesn't
00:02:39
mean that it's a good idea for him to go
00:02:41
back to the same old schedule. And this
00:02:43
is where I come in. If you haven't seen
00:02:45
my videos on this channel, I've done
00:02:47
several guest posts already here dating
00:02:49
back to over 5 years now. And I also run
00:02:52
a personal channel called Dennis Ivy
00:02:54
where I make very similar content to
00:02:56
what Brad is doing here. I also have
00:02:58
Udemy courses. In fact, Brad and I have
00:03:00
actually collaborated on a course
00:03:02
together. And Brad was actually one of
00:03:04
the main inspirations for me creating my
00:03:06
personal channel, and this has been
00:03:08
something that we've really bonded over
00:03:10
from our first collaboration. Brad and I
00:03:12
really just kind of hit it off and
00:03:14
become good friends since that time.
00:03:16
We've even met up in person one time
00:03:18
when I flew out to Boston to visit him
00:03:20
and we just went out for a couple of
00:03:21
drinks, had a great time. But we've
00:03:23
really got to know each other in this
00:03:25
process. And over the last 2 to 3 years,
00:03:28
we've constantly stayed in contact.
00:03:30
We've always shared different things
00:03:32
that we were working on and always
00:03:33
discussed what's been going on in our
00:03:35
life, our YouTube channels, and always
00:03:37
just shared ideas along with personal
00:03:39
struggles that we were both going
00:03:41
through. It was during these
00:03:42
conversations where Brad expressed the
00:03:44
desire to change something and even
00:03:47
floated the idea of potentially quitting
00:03:49
YouTube altogether. And this was because
00:03:51
it was getting unhealthy to constantly
00:03:53
try to keep up with the latest YouTube
00:03:55
algorithm changes while still trying to
00:03:57
manage his courses. Well, we both
00:03:59
realized that we actually shared a lot
00:04:02
of the same challenges where we both
00:04:04
loved making videos. We loved teaching,
00:04:06
but it was just getting too much. For
00:04:09
Brad, it was trying to keep up with
00:04:10
YouTube and courses. And for me, well, I
00:04:13
still have a full-time job that I have
00:04:14
to maintain. As these conversations
00:04:16
continued, we both realized that
00:04:18
combining our efforts actually made a
00:04:21
lot of sense and we got serious about
00:04:23
the idea of partnering together and
00:04:25
running the channel as a team and not
00:04:27
just in a collaborative effort, but
00:04:29
really strategizing and running it
00:04:31
together. One of the things that made us
00:04:33
nervous about this decision was the
00:04:35
response that we would get from you, the
00:04:37
viewers. After all, the channel doesn't
00:04:39
exist without your support. And what
00:04:41
made us more confident about this was
00:04:43
looking back at my past collaborations
00:04:45
on this channel, those videos that I've
00:04:48
posted seem to be received quite well.
00:04:50
And at this point, one of the top videos
00:04:52
on the channel is still my 7-hour Django
00:04:54
course from over 3 years ago now, I
00:04:57
think. And we've read the comments, we
00:04:59
see how those are received, and it seems
00:05:01
like a natural fit. The style that I
00:05:03
teach in, I try to keep as similar as
00:05:05
Brad as possible. After all, I did learn
00:05:08
from him a lot. So, I try to keep that
00:05:10
same format, and it seems like the right
00:05:12
fit. So, the decision was made to
00:05:14
officially partner up and take the
00:05:16
channel to the next level. And that's
00:05:18
where we're at now. So, what's changed
00:05:20
and where do we go from here? Well, for
00:05:23
starters, Brad is still going to be
00:05:25
posting videos on the YouTube channel,
00:05:26
so don't worry about him going away
00:05:28
anytime soon. What we decided on was to
00:05:31
hire a few people to help out with the
00:05:33
daily workload here at Traversy Media.
00:05:35
So for starters, we added Soloma as a
00:05:38
developer advocate and community
00:05:40
manager. And her job will be to follow
00:05:43
along with courses, see where the common
00:05:45
issues are, and provide support to the
00:05:48
community, and also make sure that she's
00:05:50
watching the Discord server and staying
00:05:52
engaged there. So, we're going to see a
00:05:54
lot more involvement in the community.
00:05:56
With that, we're also going to hire a
00:05:58
couple of developers and a few interns
00:06:00
to make sure that production goes a lot
00:06:02
faster with the project. So, anytime
00:06:04
Brad makes a video of some sort or if
00:06:07
I'm making that, it takes a lot of
00:06:09
effort to build a demo and we're going
00:06:11
to get some assistance with that. So,
00:06:13
the production could be much faster,
00:06:15
course content can be written faster and
00:06:17
we can speed up the entire production
00:06:19
process. So, the result of this is going
00:06:22
to be a massive reduction in workload
00:06:24
for myself and Brad and of course less
00:06:27
stress in making videos. Now, on the
00:06:29
channel, you're going to see a
00:06:30
collaborative effort between myself and
00:06:32
Brad. We'll both be posting videos and
00:06:34
we're even going to collaborate on some
00:06:36
courses together. So that means that
00:06:38
future courses will be produced by
00:06:40
myself and Brad. We'll both work on the
00:06:42
content, decide on what's good, and then
00:06:45
modules will be shared between the both
00:06:47
of us and we'll see what the response is
00:06:49
like. In a future course, you might see
00:06:51
Brad teach one module, then I'll jump in
00:06:53
and teach the next section, and we'll
00:06:55
just alternate between us. And this way,
00:06:57
it's going to take a lot of the stress
00:06:59
off of both of us and hopefully get the
00:07:01
production done a lot faster. In some
00:07:03
cases, one of us will go a little bit
00:07:05
quieter on the channel when we're
00:07:06
working on a course or maybe making some
00:07:08
updates. For example, over the last two
00:07:11
months, Brad has been working on the
00:07:12
modern React course, which is going to
00:07:14
launch within the next few days here of
00:07:16
posting this video. So, me making videos
00:07:19
here and filling in this gap on YouTube
00:07:21
has allowed him to dedicate 100% of his
00:07:23
effort to that specific course. So,
00:07:26
that'll be linked up in the video
00:07:27
description, by the way. Make sure to
00:07:28
check that out. Another big change that
00:07:30
you're going to see is bringing back the
00:07:32
guest creator series that was so popular
00:07:34
in 2020 and 2021. So, for those of you
00:07:37
that weren't following the channel at
00:07:38
that point, this is where we had a lot
00:07:41
of other tech YouTubers and just experts
00:07:43
in their space join the channel and
00:07:45
teach on their relative topics. So, we
00:07:47
want to go ahead and kick things off,
00:07:48
bring that series back on. And I'm
00:07:50
hoping to have Aaron Francis come on
00:07:52
here as the database expert and teach
00:07:54
about Postgress. And I'm also talking to
00:07:57
Danny Thompson, hopefully getting a
00:07:59
video out of him about interviewing in
00:08:01
the age of AI. So, I want to kick things
00:08:04
off with those two and then hopefully
00:08:05
bring on a lot of other creators. So, if
00:08:08
you have creators you want to recommend
00:08:09
and topics you want them to talk about,
00:08:11
make sure to leave that down in the
00:08:13
comment section. I would love to see
00:08:15
what your recommendations are. So,
00:08:16
that's the new direction of the channel.
00:08:18
More videos, improved courses, a slight
00:08:21
change in style, but you'll still have
00:08:23
the same old Brad. Now, I know some of
00:08:26
you won't like this, but I hope you
00:08:28
understand this is a change that needed
00:08:30
to be made in order to first of all keep
00:08:32
Brad healthy and also keep the channel
00:08:34
thriving. I know some of you will
00:08:36
unsubscribe. Totally get it. This is not
00:08:39
what you maybe originally subscribed
00:08:40
for, but I hope to keep the channel
00:08:42
thriving. And with that being said,
00:08:44
we'll see you all in the next
