  • 00:00:00
Hey everyone, welcome back to the
  • 00:00:02
channel. Well, Powa Evolve booster boxes
  • 00:00:05
are really, really starting to creep up
  • 00:00:07
in price. Today's video is all about
  • 00:00:09
that. Are we going to see some Scarlet
  • 00:00:11
and Violet booster boxes overtake Sword
  • 00:00:14
and Shield booster boxes? At the moment,
  • 00:00:15
we got some quite expensive Scarlet and
  • 00:00:18
    Violet booster boxes, considering most
  • 00:00:20
of these sets haven't been out for that
  • 00:00:22
long, and some of them are actually
  • 00:00:23
starting to creep up on Sword and Shield
  • 00:00:25
prices. So, I guess this whole video is
  • 00:00:27
dedicated to looking at both short-term
  • 00:00:29
and long-term. What is going to be the
  • 00:00:31
better investment? Are you better off
  • 00:00:32
parking your money in Scarlet and Violet
  • 00:00:34
boxes at the current prices versus Sword
  • 00:00:36
and Shield boxes at the current prices?
  • 00:00:38
What's going to give you the better
  • 00:00:39
return? What's going to be the better
  • 00:00:41
option? Before we jump into it though, I
  • 00:00:43
just wanted to give a shout out to
  • 00:00:44
today's video sponsor, which is of
  • 00:00:45
course the Collector app. I've been
  • 00:00:47
using this app for quite some time. It's
  • 00:00:49
an incredibly fun and easy app to use to
  • 00:00:51
track all your sealed and singles
  • 00:00:53
products. So you can put all your
  • 00:00:54
singles in, you can put all your sealed
  • 00:00:55
in, you can see your total inventory or
  • 00:00:57
list it from your most expensive item
  • 00:00:58
down to your least expensive. You can
  • 00:01:00
see the total amount of money you've
  • 00:01:01
spent. You can track products. So when
  • 00:01:03
you click on a product like Cosmic Clips
  • 00:01:05
booster box or revolving skies booster
  • 00:01:06
box, you can see how it's performed over
  • 00:01:08
time. And in particular, if you're a pro
  • 00:01:10
member, you can max it out and see how
  • 00:01:12
long it's performed over a total period
  • 00:01:14
of time. There's also giveaways for pro
  • 00:01:16
users on the collector app. It is such
  • 00:01:18
an easy app to use as an investor in
  • 00:01:21
particular to see your percentage gains
  • 00:01:23
across all the singles and sealed
  • 00:01:24
product that you've bought. Right onto
  • 00:01:27
today's topic. The next video I'll bring
  • 00:01:30
up here is of surging sparks and powder
  • 00:01:34
evolve booster boxes. So, at the moment
  • 00:01:36
    they're neck and neck. There's a dollar
  • 00:01:38
between them. So, a surging sparks
  • 00:01:39
booster box is currently sitting at
  • 00:01:41
$243. And a pow evolved booster box and
  • 00:01:44
everyone bags out the way I say powder
  • 00:01:46
evolved. I think it's just the accent.
  • 00:01:47
It's the Aussie accent. Sorry if you're
  • 00:01:50
in the UK, America. If you're watching
  • 00:01:52
from New Zealand, South Africa, wherever
  • 00:01:54
it might be, apologies. I cannot say Paa
  • 00:01:57
properly. Apparently, I put an R on the
  • 00:01:58
end. I don't even realize I do it.
  • 00:02:00
Again, it must be the accent. Pow valve
  • 00:02:03
    booster boxes are $242. So, there's $1
  • 00:02:05
difference between a surging sparks and
  • 00:02:07
a PE booster box. So, they're getting
  • 00:02:11
pretty pretty expensive. Now, the big
  • 00:02:14
question is, and this is one that I've
  • 00:02:16
been thinking about lately, when it
  • 00:02:18
comes to investing, what's best? Is it
  • 00:02:19
best to park our money into those
  • 00:02:21
booster boxes? Do they have more room
  • 00:02:23
for growth? Are they going to overtake
  • 00:02:24
Sword and Shield booster boxes? And if
  • 00:02:26
we look at some of the Sword and Shield
  • 00:02:27
booster boxes, they're actually not far
  • 00:02:29
behind. Pow evolved at 242 and Surging
  • 00:02:32
    Sparks at 243. Now, there's a question
  • 00:02:34
in itself which I'll answer in a second.
  • 00:02:36
You know, what's the better investment
  • 00:02:37
out of Surging Sparks and Pow Evolve? If
  • 00:02:39
you look at those two booster boxes,
  • 00:02:41
they're not far behind some what's
  • 00:02:43
deemed to be somewhat impressive Sword
  • 00:02:46
and Shield sets in Silver Tempest and
  • 00:02:48
    Astral Radiance cuz they're sitting
  • 00:02:50
    between like 260 to 270. I don't know
  • 00:02:53
the exact figure. I think Astral sitting
  • 00:02:55
around 264 and maybe Silver Tempest is
  • 00:02:58
    sitting around 266. But there's
  • 00:03:00
    literally about $20 difference between
  • 00:03:03
what feels like more modern sets and
  • 00:03:05
sets that came out some time ago.
  • 00:03:07
Albeit, there's not a great deal of
  • 00:03:09
    difference between Silver Tempest and
  • 00:03:11
Power Evolved. Now, back onto the topic
  • 00:03:13
that I said I'd answer in a second,
  • 00:03:14
which is what is the better investment
  • 00:03:15
out of Surging Sparks and Power Evolve?
  • 00:03:17
Well, the fact of the matter is, look, I
  • 00:03:20
think overall Surging Sparks is a
  • 00:03:22
stronger set, but in terms of
  • 00:03:24
    investability right now, the likelihood
  • 00:03:27
of Power Evolve booster boxes ever
  • 00:03:29
getting reprinted again are a lot
  • 00:03:30
    smaller than Surging Sparks booster
  • 00:03:32
    boxes ever getting reprinted again.
  • 00:03:35
There is every chance that Surging
  • 00:03:36
Sparks has got to be reprinted, even in
  • 00:03:39
booster box form. I know it's it feels
  • 00:03:41
like it's not the norm lately to
  • 00:03:42
reproduce booster boxes in mass amounts.
  • 00:03:44
It feels like, you know, some of those
  • 00:03:46
    ancillary products, elite trainer boxes,
  • 00:03:47
three-pack blisters, etc., etc., seem to
  • 00:03:51
be the more favorable reprint option
  • 00:03:54
    lately, particularly for stores. Like,
  • 00:03:56
you know, the old days, stores would
  • 00:03:57
have the booster box on the counter,
  • 00:03:58
they'd flip the back up, and you could
  • 00:04:00
pick your pack out and buy it. Whereas
  • 00:04:01
now, you know, you go into BigW here in
  • 00:04:03
Australia or Kmart or in the US, you
  • 00:04:05
know, we're talking Walmart or Target.
  • 00:04:06
We have them in Australia as well, of
  • 00:04:08
course, and there's all those single um
  • 00:04:10
sort of sleeved boosters, uh, you know,
  • 00:04:12
lined up on the on the metal shelf
  • 00:04:14
there. So, that seems to be like the new
  • 00:04:16
norm for retailers, whereas when I was a
  • 00:04:18
kid, it was always booster boxes flipped
  • 00:04:20
open, whether it was Target, whether was
  • 00:04:22
Kmart, where it was even the local
  • 00:04:23
supermarket. And maybe it's a theft
  • 00:04:25
thing, maybe, I don't know, maybe
  • 00:04:26
    there's 101 reasons. Maybe it's a profit
  • 00:04:28
thing for TPCI. Don't know. But either
  • 00:04:31
way, it feels like booster boxes are
  • 00:04:33
getting a little bit harder to reprint.
  • 00:04:34
But the chances to answer that question,
  • 00:04:36
    the chances of surging sparks
  • 00:04:37
essentially being reprinted again in my
  • 00:04:39
opinion is so much higher than powder
  • 00:04:41
evolved. So what's the better set? I
  • 00:04:44
think Magikarp is a beautiful chase
  • 00:04:46
card. I think overall powder evolved is
  • 00:04:49
a beautiful set with beautiful artworks
  • 00:04:50
and it really sets the tone for the
  • 00:04:52
    whole Scarlet and Violet era,
  • 00:04:53
    particularly of illustration rares and
  • 00:04:55
spe special illustration rares. Did it
  • 00:04:57
miss a trick in not having a Gyarados
  • 00:04:58
    special illustration rare? Yes, I've
  • 00:05:00
said that a h 100 times. But is it a
  • 00:05:01
good set? Of course it is. Is it as good
  • 00:05:03
a set as Surging Sparks? Probably not.
  • 00:05:06
    Look, maybe a controversial statement,
  • 00:05:08
but probably not. In my opinion, Surging
  • 00:05:10
Sparks is a stronger set. Again, could
  • 00:05:12
Surging Sparks have been better? Could
  • 00:05:13
we have seen a better Pikachu as the
  • 00:05:15
special illustration rare? Like a better
  • 00:05:16
artwork there? Yeah, probably. Maybe. Uh
  • 00:05:19
beauties in the eye of the beholder,
  • 00:05:20
isn't it? And look, when we compare
  • 00:05:22
that, so that's that question answered.
  • 00:05:24
I think if you want to go for the safe
  • 00:05:26
bet, I think the answer is to invest in
  • 00:05:27
a powder evolved booster box cuz the
  • 00:05:29
    likelihood of being reprinted compared
  • 00:05:31
to surging sparks. So shortterm, I think
  • 00:05:33
powder evolved is a better option.
  • 00:05:34
    Longterm, like I'm talking 5, 7, 10
  • 00:05:37
years, even total set value and total
  • 00:05:41
chase cards will have a big impact then.
  • 00:05:44
So in my opinion, surging sparks will be
  • 00:05:46
a more expensive booster box in the
  • 00:05:48
future. And I'm talking 5 plus years, 7
  • 00:05:50
years, 10 years even, then what a Power
  • 00:05:53
Evolve booster box will be. Now, the
  • 00:05:55
other part of this video, which is
  • 00:05:56
    comparing Scarlet and Violet booster
  • 00:05:58
boxes to Sword and Shield booster boxes,
  • 00:06:00
that's the big question because they're
  • 00:06:02
really starting to nip at the heels. And
  • 00:06:03
I wouldn't be surprised very soon,
  • 00:06:05
particularly if we saw a S a Surging
  • 00:06:06
Sparks booster box reprint, that Pad
  • 00:06:08
    Evolved easily overtakes Surging Sparks
  • 00:06:10
in the short term. And it's really
  • 00:06:12
getting very close to those other two
  • 00:06:14
booster boxes that I mentioned, Astral
  • 00:06:16
Radiance and Silver Tempest. Now, one of
  • 00:06:18
    the difficult things about Silver
  • 00:06:19
Tempest is it almost feels like a boom
  • 00:06:21
or bust set. It's like the Lugia, in my
  • 00:06:24
opinion, is a stunning Pokémon card and
  • 00:06:26
in fact probably hasn't got all the
  • 00:06:27
praise that it deserves. I think it's an
  • 00:06:29
awesome awesome card. I know there's
  • 00:06:31
16,000 PSA 10 copies, but it's just such
  • 00:06:34
a phenomenal artwork and a phenomenal
  • 00:06:36
Pokémon card. The other side of the coin
  • 00:06:39
there is though, if you don't pull that,
  • 00:06:42
you've got the Ray Trainer uh the Ray
  • 00:06:44
Trainer, the Rayquaza from the trainer
  • 00:06:46
gallery. I just joined Rayquaza and
  • 00:06:48
Trainer together. You got the Rayquaza
  • 00:06:49
from the Trainer Gallery, which is an
  • 00:06:50
awesome Chase card. But if you don't get
  • 00:06:52
one of those two, you really don't have
  • 00:06:55
much. And even the Rayquaza $80 raw,
  • 00:06:57
like, yeah, that's nothing to be um
  • 00:07:00
nothing to be laughed at, but it's not
  • 00:07:03
exactly a big hit, is it? And look, with
  • 00:07:06
that being said, if you don't get one of
  • 00:07:09
those two cards, it's like, where else
  • 00:07:12
is the value in the set? And this is
  • 00:07:14
what I wanted to show up on the screen.
  • 00:07:15
Now, if we jump into Poke data for
  • 00:07:17
argument sake, and we look at the total
  • 00:07:18
value of Pad Evolve, which is currently
  • 00:07:20
sitting at like what, $1,200 or nearon
  • 00:07:23
$1,200. Uh, of course, we got the
  • 00:07:25
Magikarp holding up there. And then
  • 00:07:27
there's just so many cards above like
  • 00:07:29
that that $10 or $15 mark. And it makes
  • 00:07:33
for a pretty deep set. And it makes for
  • 00:07:35
a good chase with Magikarp. You've also
  • 00:07:37
got the grading play that comes on top
  • 00:07:39
with Magikarp. Like, yes, it might only
  • 00:07:40
be $200 raw, but look at it in a PSA 10.
  • 00:07:44
They're so damn hard to grade that
  • 00:07:45
    you've got this huge multiplication
  • 00:07:47
effect when you gra a lot like vintage,
  • 00:07:49
like Wizards of the Coast. There's a lot
  • 00:07:51
of big hits from Wizards of the Coast
  • 00:07:52
here. Even if we're talking like
  • 00:07:54
    Expedition Base, if we're talking
  • 00:07:56
Skyidge, that might only be $200 cards
  • 00:07:58
raw in mint condition. But at a PSA 10,
  • 00:08:01
you know, the stack effect, the
  • 00:08:03
multiplier effect is insane. And that
  • 00:08:05
matters to people because PSA 10
  • 00:08:08
Magikarp's worth uh good money. If we
  • 00:08:10
compare that set value, total set value
  • 00:08:13
to Silver Tempest, it actually far
  • 00:08:14
eclipses Silver Tempest. I shouldn't say
  • 00:08:16
far eclipses, but it eclipses it by
  • 00:08:18
enough space that it's noticeable. Like
  • 00:08:20
    it's 300 or 400. No, about $300. I think
  • 00:08:23
it works out to be 8 high800s. I think
  • 00:08:25
Silver Tempest total set value is now a
  • 00:08:28
massive lover of Astral Radiance, so I'm
  • 00:08:30
not going to sit here and crap on Astral
  • 00:08:32
Radiance because I've spooked this set
  • 00:08:34
for a while. I think the Machamp is a
  • 00:08:36
beautiful Pokémon card. I think both the
  • 00:08:40
origin form, Diaga, and Palia have been
  • 00:08:42
undervalued for a while and have maybe
  • 00:08:43
only just been recognized, but they've
  • 00:08:45
also come back down to earth a little
  • 00:08:46
bit on price. And I think the trainer
  • 00:08:48
gallery is phenomenal. In fact, it's the
  • 00:08:51
second best trainer gallery out of all
  • 00:08:53
four trainer gallery sets from Sword and
  • 00:08:54
Shield. And people might go, "Hold on,
  • 00:08:56
well, Lost Origins got all the Pikachu.
  • 00:08:59
Silver Tempest has got that massive
  • 00:09:00
Rayquaza hit." Yeah, okay. But Astra
  • 00:09:03
Radiance has Stari, Garchomp, as well as
  • 00:09:06
other cards. It's the second most
  • 00:09:07
    expensive trainer gallery be behind
  • 00:09:09
    Brilliant Stars. Keeping in mind
  • 00:09:10
Brilliant Stars of course got all those
  • 00:09:12
uh those evolutions as part of the
  • 00:09:14
trainer gallery. So that adds heaps
  • 00:09:16
away. You know, Umbreon V-Max, Umbreon
  • 00:09:17
V, what's the other ones? Does it got
  • 00:09:18
Sylveon? Silon V-Max and Silon V.
  • 00:09:21
    Anyway, beside the point, Astral
  • 00:09:23
Radiance has the second most expensive
  • 00:09:25
trainer gallery, and it has three or if
  • 00:09:28
you include Bedrill, which is a 151
  • 00:09:30
Pokémon, has four strong chase cards in
  • 00:09:32
    alternate art Pokémon, whereas Silver
  • 00:09:35
Tempest just really has the one. It's
  • 00:09:37
got the Lugia, and then it's got one
  • 00:09:39
trainer gallery. And it's like, if you
  • 00:09:41
don't get one of those, well, sort of
  • 00:09:44
sucks. Whereas then you look at Astra Ra
  • 00:09:45
you go well I got four alt arts that I
  • 00:09:47
could pull that were worth you know
  • 00:09:48
decent money particularly if I grade 10
  • 00:09:51
and then I've got this really deep nice
  • 00:09:53
trainer gallery that can be worth good
  • 00:09:55
money if I pull it. So I think Astral
  • 00:09:57
    Radiance and funnily enough Astral
  • 00:09:59
Radiance is a little bit cheaper than
  • 00:10:00
Silver Tempest but I think it's a better
  • 00:10:02
set and look not everything happens
  • 00:10:05
straight away as in not every set gets
  • 00:10:07
its time in the sun straight away. At
  • 00:10:10
some stage, people might realize that
  • 00:10:12
one set is better than what it was given
  • 00:10:14
credit for at the start. And probably
  • 00:10:16
the best example of that in modern times
  • 00:10:19
is Fusion Strike. Fusion Strike, I
  • 00:10:21
wouldn't say it was crapped on, but you
  • 00:10:22
know, everyone loved the Gengar, of
  • 00:10:24
course, and the Espeon was a decent hit.
  • 00:10:25
Everyone hated the Muse inside there,
  • 00:10:28
and everyone just said, "No, it's it's
  • 00:10:29
it's garbage. It's rubbish." And it sat
  • 00:10:31
forever in a day, like probably two plus
  • 00:10:33
years at uh, you know, sub$100 US
  • 00:10:35
dollars. And then all of a sudden, bang.
  • 00:10:37
And now people are really talking
  • 00:10:38
strongly of it. So th that's going to
  • 00:10:41
happen. But to answer the question like
  • 00:10:43
where should we be parking our money,
  • 00:10:46
you know, and will Scarlet and Violet
  • 00:10:48
    sets overtake Sword and
  • 00:10:50
    Shield? Big questions. Big big
  • 00:10:53
questions. Sword and Shield has some
  • 00:10:55
really really strong Pokémon card sets.
  • 00:10:58
Sword and Shield also isn't as fun to
  • 00:11:00
    open as Scarlet and
  • 00:11:03
Violet. You might dispute that. You
  • 00:11:05
might go, "Well, trainer gallery sets
  • 00:11:06
are a little bit more fun to open."
  • 00:11:07
Like, yes, they are, but Scarlet and
  • 00:11:10
Violet pretty much promises you some
  • 00:11:13
illustration rares from a booster box.
  • 00:11:16
And yes, you know, they might be hard.
  • 00:11:17
Like, if you look at Power Evolved, you
  • 00:11:19
    got like a 1 in480 chance of pulling a
  • 00:11:21
Magikarp, whatever it is, because you
  • 00:11:23
got so many illustration rares, but
  • 00:11:25
you're definitely going to pull some
  • 00:11:26
illustration rares if you open a booster
  • 00:11:27
box. You've also got every chance of
  • 00:11:29
    pulling a special illustration rare.
  • 00:11:30
You're also going to get a heap of
  • 00:11:32
ancillary hits inside it. I just think
  • 00:11:34
Scarlet and Violet's been more fun to
  • 00:11:36
open than Sword and Shield. Does that
  • 00:11:38
matter in the long run? I mean, clearly
  • 00:11:40
not if we look at Evolving Skies cuz
  • 00:11:41
Evolving Skies goes, "Well, stuff you.
  • 00:11:43
Who cares about pull rates? I don't care
  • 00:11:45
if you open four booster boxes and get
  • 00:11:47
nothing. I'm Evolving Skies and I'm
  • 00:11:48
going to be worth $1,600 a booster box
  • 00:11:50
or whatever it's got to or $1,400 a
  • 00:11:52
booster box." So, there's so many
  • 00:11:55
questions to sort of answer there. And I
  • 00:11:58
suppose if we if we have a quick go at
  • 00:12:00
    answering them
  • 00:12:01
essentially. Scarlet and Violet has more
  • 00:12:03
    depth. The artwork's phenomenal. Sword
  • 00:12:06
and Shield. It had some weaker sets to
  • 00:12:09
start off with, but we all know it hit
  • 00:12:10
its stride and it had some phenomenal
  • 00:12:12
Pokémon card sets. Chilling Rain, Fusion
  • 00:12:14
Strike, Evolving Skies, of course. You
  • 00:12:18
know, Astral I speak strongly of
  • 00:12:19
Brilliant Stars I think is still
  • 00:12:21
    underrated. Lost Origin with that
  • 00:12:22
beautiful Gueritina as well as you know
  • 00:12:24
    the Pikachu trainer gallery. Silver
  • 00:12:25
Tempest with a beautiful Luga, although
  • 00:12:27
    not much depth to that
  • 00:12:30
set. What's the better investment? I
  • 00:12:32
mean, I I think I think some people
  • 00:12:36
might be scared because they've missed
  • 00:12:37
the boat on Sword and Shield. I think
  • 00:12:39
Pala Evolve will slowly but surely
  • 00:12:42
probably overtake some of those weaker
  • 00:12:44
Sword and Shield sets. Like I wouldn't
  • 00:12:46
be surprised if it eventually overtakes.
  • 00:12:50
Although there's some rarity attached to
  • 00:12:51
these sets, but Sword and Shield base,
  • 00:12:53
Rebel Clash, of course, Battle Styles,
  • 00:12:56
    it's already overtaken. I wouldn't be
  • 00:12:58
surprised if it starts nipping at the
  • 00:12:59
heels of a set like Silver Tempest. But
  • 00:13:02
to answer the whole question around
  • 00:13:04
this, where should you park your money?
  • 00:13:05
I mean, that is the million-dollar
  • 00:13:06
question. Keep in mind, every single
  • 00:13:08
Scarlet and Violet set is still in
  • 00:13:10
rotation, so they could be reprinted. I
  • 00:13:12
would still rather if I had to pick
  • 00:13:15
    between
  • 00:13:15
$243 on a surging sparks booster box and
  • 00:13:19
$264 or whatever it is. So $20
  • 00:13:22
difference on an Astral Radiance booster
  • 00:13:24
box. I would still put my money towards
  • 00:13:26
Astral Radiance. It's out of print. It's
  • 00:13:30
done. I still feel that that that
  • 00:13:33
argument that I made before about a set
  • 00:13:35
being, you know, maybe unrecognized for
  • 00:13:38
a while. This this will start to gain
  • 00:13:40
traction. I think this set, like I said,
  • 00:13:42
four beautiful old arts, a stunning
  • 00:13:44
    trainer
  • 00:13:46
gallery, look at Cosmian Eclipse. I
  • 00:13:48
mean, that didn't come out of the gate
  • 00:13:49
absolutely swinging. It took some time
  • 00:13:51
for people to realize, even team up, it
  • 00:13:53
took some time for people to realize
  • 00:13:55
    that, you know, there's good
  • 00:13:56
fundamentals inside a Pokémon card set.
  • 00:13:59
Uh, if we then flip the script and go,
  • 00:14:01
well, Pa Evolve versus say Silver
  • 00:14:03
Tempest, hey, my money's probably on
  • 00:14:06
Paya Evolved as a better investment over
  • 00:14:08
Silver Tempest. The likelihood of powder
  • 00:14:10
    evolve getting reprinted, particularly
  • 00:14:11
in booster box form, is getting so so
  • 00:14:13
small now. I would hedge my bets and
  • 00:14:15
place it there. Maybe that answers the
  • 00:14:17
question. I'm Michael. This is Py. Catch
  • 00:14:20
    you our next haunt.
