- 00:01:06understand your motivations and whether
- 00:01:08they align with the Creator first or the
- 00:01:10business first approach to starting and
- 00:01:12growing a YouTube channel then we're
- 00:01:13going to talk about how to actually get
- 00:01:14started with the seven video Challenge
- 00:01:16and then we're going to end by setting
- 00:01:17some realistic expectations for the
- 00:01:19journey ahead and I'll share some
- 00:01:20practical tips that'll hopefully help
- 00:01:21you stay on track stay consistent and
- 00:01:23ultimately have success whatever success
- 00:01:25means to you part one understanding your
- 00:01:27motivation okay so the very first thing
- 00:01:29I would say to someone who's considering
- 00:01:31starting a YouTube channel is great you
- 00:01:33should totally do it and the main reason
- 00:01:34for that is that starting and growing a
- 00:01:36YouTube channel is a fantastic personal
- 00:01:38growth and spiritual growth and
- 00:01:40skills-based growth Journey whether or
- 00:01:42not it ever makes money it will make
- 00:01:45something of you to start and try and
- 00:01:46grow a YouTube channel making videos
- 00:01:48where you put yourself out on the
- 00:01:49internet and to debase yourself in
- 00:01:50public and dealing with all the emotions
- 00:01:52associated with that and the fact that
- 00:01:54people might say mean things and having
- 00:01:56to overcome imposter syndrome and
- 00:01:57overthinking and then also learning some
- 00:01:59of the technical skills around cameras
- 00:02:01and lights and editing and all that kind
- 00:02:02of stuff getting better at presenting to
- 00:02:04a camera all of these are incredibly
- 00:02:06valuable skills that would help anyone
- 00:02:09in any kind of business or any kind of
- 00:02:10Walk of Life and that's why partly I
- 00:02:12think you should just go for it if you
- 00:02:14want to start a YouTube channel but if
- 00:02:15you and I were having a coffee for
- 00:02:17example and we were talking about you
- 00:02:18starting a YouTube channel I would try
- 00:02:20and dig in and understand your
- 00:02:21motivations and this is where the
- 00:02:23motivation Matrix comes in and the thing
- 00:02:25we want to understand is that to what
- 00:02:27extent is your primary motivation for
- 00:02:29doing YouTube to what extent is it money
- 00:02:31and to what extent is it fun now I am
- 00:02:33simplifying a lot of things by using
- 00:02:35money and fun money could be like I want
- 00:02:37to build a business I want to generate
- 00:02:38leads for my existing business you know
- 00:02:39ultimately I want to be able to quit my
- 00:02:40job etc etc and fun I'm talking about
- 00:02:43you know creative fulfillment personal
- 00:02:45satisfaction the joy of creation and the
- 00:02:47impact and potential fulfillment you can
- 00:02:49get from helping other people by
- 00:02:51teaching them stuff on the internet so
- 00:02:53let's first start by getting quadrant
- 00:02:54number one out of the way now quadrant
- 00:02:55number one is where your motivation or
- 00:02:57the result of your YouTube channel is
- 00:02:59you make lots of lot of money and also
- 00:03:00you have a lot of fun now this is
- 00:03:02obviously the dream life this is where
- 00:03:03everyone wants to get to where you're
- 00:03:05making money and you are also having fun
- 00:03:07but generally this is not where anyone
- 00:03:10starts when you start off your YouTube
- 00:03:12Journey you do not start off making lots
- 00:03:13of money and you generally don't start
- 00:03:15off having lots of fun if you are
- 00:03:16motivated by making lots of money and
- 00:03:18having lots of fun then you got to
- 00:03:19recognize this is a destination to get
- 00:03:21to to Aspire to a destination that
- 00:03:23you're always going to be working in the
- 00:03:24direction of rather than the starting
- 00:03:27point so there are two viable starting
- 00:03:29points okay so let's move on to quadrant
- 00:03:30number two where your primary motivation
- 00:03:32for starting a YouTube channel is money
- 00:03:35now obviously you still want to have fun
- 00:03:36because you want to enjoy your life but
- 00:03:37fun is not the primary motivation behind
- 00:03:39why you're doing a YouTube channel money
- 00:03:40is the primary motivation behind why
- 00:03:42you're doing a YouTube channel and this
- 00:03:43would be what I call the business first
- 00:03:45approach to YouTube you start off with a
- 00:03:47business first and then you start or
- 00:03:49grow a YouTube channel in order to
- 00:03:51generate leads and drive traffic to that
- 00:03:53particular business if you are taking a
- 00:03:55business first approach to YouTube you
- 00:03:57kind of already need to have some kind
- 00:03:59of product to sell some kind of way of
- 00:04:00making money and YouTube is purely a
- 00:04:02marketing vehicle this is the quadrant
- 00:04:04that is most suitable for existing
- 00:04:05business owners there is a danger zone
- 00:04:08here the danger zone is what if your
- 00:04:10primary motivation for doing YouTube is
- 00:04:12money but you are not already a business
- 00:04:14owner you do not already have a product
- 00:04:15to sell this is where if you and I were
- 00:04:17having a conversation I would be
- 00:04:19encouraging you to think a little bit
- 00:04:21deeper about this because it is really
- 00:04:23really really really hard to make money
- 00:04:25on YouTube if your primary motivation is
- 00:04:27money and you're viewing YouTube as a
- 00:04:29getrich quick quick or whatever scheme
- 00:04:31there are far more efficient ways to
- 00:04:32make money than doing YouTube if your
- 00:04:35goal is to make money and you do not
- 00:04:36have a product YouTubers is a gamble
- 00:04:38I've been doing YouTube for 7 years I've
- 00:04:39made over a thousand videos but if I
- 00:04:41lost everything went completely broke
- 00:04:43had to get a day job again like working
- 00:04:44as a doctor or whatever and then I was
- 00:04:46trying to build something on the side
- 00:04:47where the primary motivation was money I
- 00:04:49would not start a YouTube channel I
- 00:04:51would start a business I would build
- 00:04:52some sort of product I would find a
- 00:04:53market for that product I'd get to the
- 00:04:55point where I'm making a few th000 or
- 00:04:57maybe $10,000 a month with the product
- 00:04:59and then I would use YouTube as an
- 00:05:00organic content marketing engine for my
- 00:05:02business there are people who say yeah
- 00:05:04but what about AdSense and what about
- 00:05:05brand deals and stuff and then yeah
- 00:05:06again I would say that if the primary
- 00:05:08goal is to make money trying to make
- 00:05:10money directly from YouTube just it just
- 00:05:11takes a lot of time and if the primary
- 00:05:14motivation is money you are not going to
- 00:05:15bother sticking to it for long enough to
- 00:05:17actually see that money come to fruition
- 00:05:19and also there's no guarantee if there
- 00:05:21was a guarantee everyone everyone would
- 00:05:22be a YouTuber and everyone would be rich
- 00:05:24and so if you do not already have an
- 00:05:25existing product or service or business
- 00:05:27then your YouTube channel is going to
- 00:05:29need a lot of time to grow organically
- 00:05:30and that is going to need a lot of
- 00:05:31patience and a lot of consistency and a
- 00:05:33willingness to create content just for
- 00:05:36its own sake with absolutely no
- 00:05:38guarantee of a payoff in the future and
- 00:05:39the litus test for this is would you do
- 00:05:42YouTube if you knew you were never ever
- 00:05:44going to make money from it this is an
- 00:05:46interesting question to ask would you be
- 00:05:47an investment banker if you knew you
- 00:05:49would never make money from it obviously
- 00:05:51not no one in their right mind would be
- 00:05:52an investment banker if they knew they
- 00:05:54were never going to make money from it
- 00:05:56would you be an accountant if you knew
- 00:05:57you were never going to make money from
- 00:05:58it obviously not you'd have to be really
- 00:06:00weird to want to be an accountant
- 00:06:02without making money from it but would
- 00:06:04you learn the guitar knowing that you're
- 00:06:05never going to make money from it yeah
- 00:06:07you can imagine yourself wanting to
- 00:06:08learn the guitar just for its own sake
- 00:06:10you are intrinsically motivated to learn
- 00:06:12the guitar rather than instrumentally
- 00:06:13motivated I.E by money to become an
- 00:06:15investment banker would you want to
- 00:06:16learn a language if you knew you were
- 00:06:17never going to make money from it yeah
- 00:06:19why not like it's kind of cool I want to
- 00:06:20learn Japanese and Mandarin my wife
- 00:06:22speaks Mandarin so that's kind of cool I
- 00:06:23can impress a parents I want to learn
- 00:06:25Japanese cuz I like anime and I can
- 00:06:27connect with the culture I have reasons
- 00:06:28for learning Japanese that are not
- 00:06:29trying to make money so for you your
- 00:06:31YouTube channel if you knew it was never
- 00:06:33going to make money would you still want
- 00:06:35to do it if the answer is no then it
- 00:06:36means you're primarily motivated to do a
- 00:06:38YouTube channel for the money which
- 00:06:40again I would say if you're a business
- 00:06:41owner fantastic but if you are not a
- 00:06:43business owner please steer clear of
- 00:06:44YouTube If the primary motivation is
- 00:06:46money okay so that was quadrant number
- 00:06:47two let's move on to quadrant number
- 00:06:48three now this is where I imagine most
- 00:06:51people who watch my YouTube channel are
- 00:06:52at I'm going to assume that you are
- 00:06:54you've got a job of some sort maybe you
- 00:06:56work 9 to5 as a corporate employee and
- 00:06:58you kind of like your job but you really
- 00:06:59like your job that much and so you Vibe
- 00:07:01with the idea of maybe starting a
- 00:07:03YouTube channel so that you know you
- 00:07:04like the idea of maybe teaching and
- 00:07:05sharing educational stuff on the
- 00:07:07internet maybe you like the idea of
- 00:07:08building a business around it eventually
- 00:07:09and you maybe like the idea of
- 00:07:11potentially someday being able to quit
- 00:07:12your job okay so if you answered yes to
- 00:07:14that question of would you do YouTube
- 00:07:16even if you knew you were never going to
- 00:07:17make money from it then you might be in
- 00:07:19quadrant number three where your primary
- 00:07:20motivation for doing YouTube is fun and
- 00:07:22this would be what I call the Creator
- 00:07:24first approach where the goal is to be a
- 00:07:26Creator first and monetize and create a
- 00:07:29business second in quarter number two
- 00:07:30the goal is to be a business first and
- 00:07:32then start weaving in the Creator stuff
- 00:07:34by using YouTube to generate organic
- 00:07:36content for your for your business or
- 00:07:37whatever but here we are starting out as
- 00:07:39a YouTuber or a Creator first most
- 00:07:41YouTubers who I know who are now
- 00:07:42successful in the platform and building
- 00:07:43have built thriving businesses around it
- 00:07:45have started off as creators first they
- 00:07:47started off making YouTube videos for
- 00:07:49the joy of it for the enjoyment for the
- 00:07:50passion for the Fulfillment for the
- 00:07:51impact that they could potentially have
- 00:07:53making free videos on the internet and
- 00:07:54over time as they stayed consistent and
- 00:07:55as the channels grew they started
- 00:07:57getting monetization opportunities
- 00:07:58through YouTube ads ad and through brand
- 00:08:00deals maybe some of them eventually
- 00:08:01built their own products like courses
- 00:08:03and merge and apps and all that fun
- 00:08:04stuff and you can get to this place
- 00:08:05where you have lots of money and also
- 00:08:07lots of fun but you start off as a
- 00:08:09Creator and then you move into that
- 00:08:10particular quadrant but the key to the
- 00:08:12Creator first approach is that you've
- 00:08:13got to want to do it even if you weren't
- 00:08:15going to make money from it so if you
- 00:08:16were to for example make one video every
- 00:08:18single week for the next 2 years I can
- 00:08:19guarantee that your life will change I
- 00:08:21cannot guarantee how much money you're
- 00:08:22going to make but I can 100% guarantee
- 00:08:24that your life will change at the very
- 00:08:25least you'll learn valuable skills
- 00:08:27you'll overcome some emotional hurdles
- 00:08:28it'll be an exercise in personal and
- 00:08:30Spiritual Development and you might make
- 00:08:32a bunch of friends along the way as well
- 00:08:33and then obviously if you don't want
- 00:08:34money and you don't want to have fun
- 00:08:36while growing a YouTube channel I would
- 00:08:37be asking the question well then why do
- 00:08:38you want to grow a YouTube channel maybe
- 00:08:40you want to do it for like nonprofit
- 00:08:42reasons where you're like grinding away
- 00:08:43and trying to make videos even though
- 00:08:45it's not going to make any money CU you
- 00:08:46care about impact but the key thing I
- 00:08:48would say is that the thing that makes a
- 00:08:49YouTube channel sustainable is you
- 00:08:51enjoying the process of doing it this is
- 00:08:53why it's difficult to succeed on YouTube
- 00:08:54if you are Money Motivated but you don't
- 00:08:56have a way of making money because for
- 00:08:58the first year or two or three or
- 00:09:00sometimes even five of making YouTube
- 00:09:01videos where you're not making any money
- 00:09:03it will suck all of the motivation and
- 00:09:05joy out of you and if you're not
- 00:09:06enjoying the process it's just never
- 00:09:07going to happen so please I would avoid
- 00:09:09trying to start a YouTube channel if
- 00:09:11you're not intending to make money from
- 00:09:12it and also you don't intend to have fun
- 00:09:14doing it along the way now as we talked
- 00:09:15about business owners start with the
- 00:09:16business first approach and then
- 00:09:18eventually become this dream life
- 00:09:20Creator preneur as I call it where
- 00:09:22you're an entrepreneur but you're also
- 00:09:23Creator and you know that's kind of
- 00:09:24where I am right now thankfully but a
- 00:09:26lot of people will start creative first
- 00:09:27where they start making YouTube videos
- 00:09:28and stuff for the fun the Fulfillment
- 00:09:30and the joy of the craft and over time
- 00:09:32we'll find a way to monetize that and
- 00:09:34that is the creative first approach to
- 00:09:35building a YouTube channel and so if you
- 00:09:37and I were having a conversation I'd
- 00:09:39really be trying to understand the
- 00:09:40motivations behind it and of course I
- 00:09:42would be trying to discourage you from
- 00:09:43attempting to use YouTube as a
- 00:09:45money-making opportunity when you don't
- 00:09:47already have a business around the thing
- 00:09:48and this video is getting very long but
- 00:09:49that's okay it's fine if you're here
- 00:09:51with me then you're probably the sort of
- 00:09:52person who would vibe with the way that
- 00:09:54I teach stuff anyway I'm not going to
- 00:09:55try any of this retention editing and
- 00:09:56all this to try and keep you
- 00:09:57engaged to the video if you don't want
- 00:09:59to stick around that's totally fine
- 00:10:00anyway I'm just using that as a note for
- 00:10:02myself because when you become a
- 00:10:04YouTuber or if you are a YouTuber as you
- 00:10:05will know there's always this thing in
- 00:10:06the back of your mind of like ah should
- 00:10:08I do this thing like what if the
- 00:10:10audience drops off the video what if my
- 00:10:11retention plummets and what if I look at
- 00:10:13my graph and like I need to make it more
- 00:10:15engaging and stuff but you know a big
- 00:10:17part of building a YouTube channel that
- 00:10:19you actually enjoy is doing what you
- 00:10:22want in it and trying to then trying to
- 00:10:24that trying to align that to your
- 00:10:26business goals rather than to chase
- 00:10:28something like views or engage
- 00:10:29engagement or retention or any of this
- 00:10:30stuff anyway side point um I have a bit
- 00:10:32of a story to tell this so it's not it's
- 00:10:34not much story but most people think if
- 00:10:36you've been following my channel for any
- 00:10:37length of time most people think that I
- 00:10:38started out creative first that oh he
- 00:10:40was a doctor and they medical student
- 00:10:42and then he was a doctor and then while
- 00:10:44working full-time as a doctor and stuff
- 00:10:45he started the YouTube channel and was
- 00:10:47making YouTube videos and eventually the
- 00:10:49YouTube channel grew and then the money
- 00:10:51started rolling in and he became a
- 00:10:52millionaire and all this sort of stuff
- 00:10:54it's not actually true I actually
- 00:10:55started YouTube with a business first
- 00:10:57approach to it and the first business
- 00:10:59that I had was called sixed and it was a
- 00:11:01company that was helping people get into
- 00:11:02medical school so I'd be traveling up
- 00:11:04and down the country here in the UK I
- 00:11:06also taught a course in Singapore and
- 00:11:07one in the Netherlands and I was
- 00:11:08teaching people how to prepare for the
- 00:11:10bmat which used to be a medical school
- 00:11:12entrance exam to get you into like
- 00:11:13Oxford and Cambridge University and
- 00:11:14Imperial and UCL and a few other medical
- 00:11:16schools and that was how I made money
- 00:11:18when I was in medical school I was
- 00:11:19making like £440,000
- 00:11:21$50,000 a year profit from that business
- 00:11:23so that basically funded my entire
- 00:11:25University experience which was awesome
- 00:11:27but around 2017 we started to store in
- 00:11:29terms of business growth and I reasoned
- 00:11:31that like wait a minute why don't I
- 00:11:33start a YouTube channel and make
- 00:11:35educational content about getting into
- 00:11:37med school because if enough people
- 00:11:39watch that hopefully some of them will
- 00:11:41think I'm a legit guy and will sign up
- 00:11:42to my course the primary motivation was
- 00:11:46actually money there was part there was
- 00:11:48a big part of me that was like oh it'
- 00:11:49just be cool to be a YouTuber because
- 00:11:50I've been wanting to be a YouTuber since
- 00:11:51like 2010 and I sort of had a few full
- 00:11:53starts with like music videos and stuff
- 00:11:55you can see them on the channel if you
- 00:11:56like but really the reason I started my
- 00:11:58YouTube channnel was was because I
- 00:11:59wanted to increase the amount of leads I
- 00:12:01was getting to my business and I did
- 00:12:03manage to increase the amount of leads I
- 00:12:04was getting to my business but then very
- 00:12:06quickly I realized actually this YouTube
- 00:12:07thing is more fun than actually running
- 00:12:09this business so then in 2019 I sold
- 00:12:10that business I'm still very slightly
- 00:12:12involved with it and actually if I
- 00:12:14didn't start YouTube with a business
- 00:12:15first approach if I was making no money
- 00:12:17at all for the first year which I wasn't
- 00:12:19I like lost money for my for the first
- 00:12:20year of 90 videos of growing on YouTube
- 00:12:23it would have been hard to keep going it
- 00:12:25would have been hard to have the
- 00:12:26motivation to keep going if I didn't
- 00:12:27know that like okay for every every view
- 00:12:29that any of my med school videos gets
- 00:12:31there is a slightly increased chance
- 00:12:32that someone might sign up to one of my
- 00:12:34courses and that was the thing that I
- 00:12:35was using to make money to fund my med
- 00:12:36school experience now to be clear
- 00:12:38there's nothing wrong with doing the
- 00:12:39Creator first approach there's nothing
- 00:12:41wrong with doing the business first
- 00:12:42approach but I don't want you guys I
- 00:12:44don't want you to think that oh Ali
- 00:12:46abdal succeeded by just starting a
- 00:12:48YouTube channel and just randomly
- 00:12:48talking about random and then
- 00:12:49eventually it blew up it was actually
- 00:12:51quite a strategic decision based on
- 00:12:53driving leads to my business so if you
- 00:12:54are a business owner and you're still
- 00:12:55here then fantastic you know a YouTube
- 00:12:58channel is a much more guaranteed path
- 00:13:00to success if you have a business on the
- 00:13:01back end because now you can be super
- 00:13:03Niche with your content you can just
- 00:13:04Target exactly your ICP your ideal
- 00:13:06customer profile you can make content
- 00:13:08that really appeals to them and then you
- 00:13:09can do call to actions that say Hey if
- 00:13:11you want to sign up to my med school
- 00:13:12admissions course or hey if you want to
- 00:13:14sign up to my marketing agency or
- 00:13:15whatever the thing is you can drive
- 00:13:16traffic directly to the thing honestly
- 00:13:18to be like it is not in my interest to
- 00:13:21tell you this I make money I make
- 00:13:23millions every year from teaching people
- 00:13:24how to how to start and grow YouTube
- 00:13:25channels I would probably be able to
- 00:13:27double my income if I leaned heavily
- 00:13:29into the messaging that you right now
- 00:13:31you can if you start a YouTube channel
- 00:13:32you'll be able to quit your job and make
- 00:13:34money there's all sorts of people who
- 00:13:36are teaching you how to quit your job
- 00:13:37and make money on the internet everyone
- 00:13:39wants to do that you can charge
- 00:13:40extortionate amounts of money for online
- 00:13:42courses and systems and stuff if you
- 00:13:43just tell people you can make money from
- 00:13:45this thing and it's in my interest to
- 00:13:47tell you that hey if you want to make
- 00:13:48money you should start a YouTube channel
- 00:13:50but I'm going against my commercial
- 00:13:51interest here and I'm just telling you
- 00:13:53it is really really hard to grow on
- 00:13:55YouTube if your primary motivation is
- 00:13:56money if you are not enjoying the
- 00:13:57process and the reason I'm going about
- 00:13:59this so much is because I have dozens
- 00:14:01and dozens and dozens of conversations
- 00:14:02every single year with people who I know
- 00:14:05in real life and some people I don't
- 00:14:06know in real life you know someone comes
- 00:14:07up to me on the street and say do you
- 00:14:08want to grab a coffee and I'm like yeah
- 00:14:10I'm free why not so many people want to
- 00:14:12start YouTube channels and I I spend a
- 00:14:15lot of time trying to talk people out of
- 00:14:18viewing YouTube as a get-rich quick
- 00:14:19scheme unless you already have a
- 00:14:21business obviously caveat trying to talk
- 00:14:22people out of viewing YouTube as a
- 00:14:24getrich quick scheme and trying to
- 00:14:25encourage people to focus on the joy and
- 00:14:27the satisfaction and the Fulfillment and
- 00:14:29the learning of skills and the personal
- 00:14:31growth that you get from starting a
- 00:14:32YouTube channel and trying to get people
- 00:14:34to do it for a reason other than money
- 00:14:37this has gone on for a very long time
- 00:14:39but if you're watching this video and
- 00:14:40you're thinking of starting a growing a
- 00:14:41YouTube channel and you have money in
- 00:14:42the back of your mind please let it be
- 00:14:44the one thing you take away from this
- 00:14:45bloody video do not try and do YouTube
- 00:14:48If the primary goal is money if you
- 00:14:50actually find a way to enjoy the craft
- 00:14:52of making videos and you focus on being
- 00:14:53of service being creating valuable
- 00:14:55content that will hopefully help people
- 00:14:56and if you're watching this then
- 00:14:57hopefully you think that you know you
- 00:14:59know this video is kind of helping you
- 00:15:00in some way focusing on creating
- 00:15:01valuable content that might help people
- 00:15:03and focusing on enjoying the journey
- 00:15:04along the way you are way more likely to
- 00:15:06actually make money from your YouTube
- 00:15:08channel compared to if you have a
- 00:15:09primary goal of making money from your
- 00:15:11YouTube channel and you don't already
- 00:15:13have a business around it and now you're
- 00:15:14just going to be firing blanks you're
- 00:15:15going to be struggling with consistency
- 00:15:17you're going to be having to use
- 00:15:18discipline you're going to be trying to
- 00:15:19whip yourself every time you haven't
- 00:15:20made a video because you have this
- 00:15:22extrinsic motivation that's driving you
- 00:15:24to do the thing an extrinsic motivation
- 00:15:26is way less powerful than the intrinsic
- 00:15:27motivation that you get the joy of the
- 00:15:29craft the joy of Creation The Joy of
- 00:15:31being able to help people please please
- 00:15:32please please do not do YouTube just for
- 00:15:34the money for goodness
- 00:15:36sake this is I'm getting super
- 00:15:38passionate about this this is kind of
- 00:15:39fun okay now at this point if you're a
- 00:15:41business and you know that you want to
- 00:15:42do YouTube for the money to drive leads
- 00:15:43to your business you should 100% sign up
- 00:15:45for our YouTuber Academy we we'll just
- 00:15:46save you time along the way and we
- 00:15:48really help business owners drive more
- 00:15:49lead to their business and make more
- 00:15:50money and all that kind of stuff but if
- 00:15:52you're not then the rest of this video
- 00:15:53is going to be for you hopefully part
- 00:15:55two the seven video challenge okay so
- 00:15:57here's the thing um
- 00:15:59if you are watching this far you're
- 00:16:01probably thinking of starting a YouTube
- 00:16:02channel and the biggest thing that holds
- 00:16:04people back is just not actually doing
- 00:16:06the thing in my case I've been wanting
- 00:16:08to start a YouTube channel since 2010
- 00:16:10and it was only really when I had the
- 00:16:12money thing focused on driving lad
- 00:16:14through my business that I actually
- 00:16:15managed to succeed with it uh or
- 00:16:16actually managed to start it but it took
- 00:16:18me like seven years to make my first
- 00:16:19YouTube video because I spent so much
- 00:16:21time overthinking and thinking I needed
- 00:16:23the right camera and the Right
- 00:16:24microphone and then 7 years later
- 00:16:27eventually I managed to get a friend of
- 00:16:29mine called durka to sing on camera and
- 00:16:31I wasn't even in that video I was like I
- 00:16:33was so shy about showing myself on
- 00:16:34camera that I was behind the camera
- 00:16:36filming my friends singing songs for me
- 00:16:39video number like six or seven was when
- 00:16:40I was on camera playing the guitar uh
- 00:16:43with my friend Katherine while she was
- 00:16:44singing and then the next video I made
- 00:16:46was a video where I was singing and that
- 00:16:47was my first time actually speaking to a
- 00:16:48camera and it was really scary and I I'd
- 00:16:51actually unlisted that video for like 7
- 00:16:54years because I was embarrassed it got
- 00:16:55like five views and it got three
- 00:16:57dislikes three dislikes and five views
- 00:17:00and I was so demotivated I was like you
- 00:17:02know what you know I've been trying to
- 00:17:04be a m music YouTuber for the last s
- 00:17:06years and now after seven years later
- 00:17:08I've finally plucked up the courage to
- 00:17:09put myself on camera and sing a freaking
- 00:17:11song and I've got five views and three
- 00:17:14dislikes so I unlisted that video so no
- 00:17:16one could see it and it it was only a
- 00:17:18couple of months ago that I I remembered
- 00:17:19that I unlisted that video and I just
- 00:17:21put it public again because now it's
- 00:17:22just kind of fun it's not it's fun now
- 00:17:23that I'm a big YouTuber and people look
- 00:17:25to me for YouTube advice to see you know
- 00:17:27my shitty singing
- 00:17:29uh not knowing anything about cameras
- 00:17:31and stuff and the fact that I felt so
- 00:17:33bad about that video that I chose to
- 00:17:34unlist it for years anyway all this to
- 00:17:36say is that I have seen this pattern
- 00:17:39play out in myself and I've seen this
- 00:17:41pattern play out in a lot of people I've
- 00:17:42seen um where honestly if you're
- 00:17:44watching this part in the video and you
- 00:17:45haven't yet started your YouTube channel
- 00:17:47I imagine you didn't just think about it
- 00:17:49right I imagine you've been thinking
- 00:17:50maybe for some time maybe even for years
- 00:17:52maybe even for over a decade that hey it
- 00:17:54would be cool to start a YouTube channel
- 00:17:56maybe you have most people I speak to
- 00:17:57have been thinking about it it for
- 00:17:59months if not years before they finally
- 00:18:01take that plunge and so the seven video
- 00:18:04challenge is that I would implore you to
- 00:18:07stop watching videos like this stop
- 00:18:09overthinking and just make your first
- 00:18:11seven videos seven is the magic number
- 00:18:14no one starts off being perfect from day
- 00:18:16one seven is the magic number because
- 00:18:17once you've actually made seven videos
- 00:18:19you have a way better sense of how it
- 00:18:21how the process actually works now I'm
- 00:18:22going to tell you another story here
- 00:18:24which may or may not be relevant to this
- 00:18:25but actually I think I think it's kind
- 00:18:26of relevant so back when I was in
- 00:18:28medical school I you know we had to
- 00:18:30learn how to save lives by doing CPR you
- 00:18:32know cardiopulmonary resuscitation and
- 00:18:34following kind of this life support
- 00:18:36algorithm where you know like in TV
- 00:18:37shows and stuff when someone's heart
- 00:18:39stops and it's like and then everyone
- 00:18:41comes in and like you know the chest
- 00:18:44compressions and then they take
- 00:18:46the clear and then you know all all of
- 00:18:49that kind of stuff so I'd seen that
- 00:18:50in like gry's Anatomy forever obviously
- 00:18:52everyone has seen that on TV and when I
- 00:18:54got to med school I was really excited
- 00:18:55to learn about this and you know for the
- 00:18:58first three years of med school out of
- 00:18:59six we just do a lot of Science and a
- 00:19:01lot of theory and then my fourth year it
- 00:19:02was like finally time to go into the
- 00:19:04hospitals and see what this stuff would
- 00:19:06be like in real life now I was I was
- 00:19:08like I'm going to save all the lives
- 00:19:10right I'm going to save all the lives
- 00:19:11I'm going to learn how to do the thing
- 00:19:12and I spent ages reading about how to do
- 00:19:15CPR and watching videos about it and
- 00:19:18reading lecture notes about it and
- 00:19:19speaking to people about it
- 00:19:21and nothing could have possibly prepared
- 00:19:24me for the moment where I was involved
- 00:19:26in a a cardiac arrest scenario myself
- 00:19:28nothing could have prepared me for that
- 00:19:30all of the reading all the watching all
- 00:19:31of that it just was I was like oh
- 00:19:34okay this is what it actually is in real
- 00:19:37life I understand now it's like I'd been
- 00:19:40using this tiny percentage of my brain
- 00:19:42capacity or like capacity to like
- 00:19:44understand the thing and having the
- 00:19:46experience of it made me
- 00:19:47think okay I get it now and then when I
- 00:19:50started reading and watching and
- 00:19:51listening to the stuff and understanding
- 00:19:53the algorithms and like you know the
- 00:19:54dose of adrenaline and like you know do
- 00:19:56you which which cardiac rhythm is the in
- 00:19:59to you know whatever it all suddenly
- 00:20:01started to make sense the reason I'm
- 00:20:03using this example is because it's the
- 00:20:04same thing with YouTube videos you can
- 00:20:06read and overthink and analyze and watch
- 00:20:08all the tutorials all you want about
- 00:20:10making videos but unless you've made a
- 00:20:12few videos you are missing out any on a
- 00:20:15huge amount of context that your brain
- 00:20:16and body will otherwise have around the
- 00:20:18process of creating YouTube videos so
- 00:20:20that's why the thing I would say is
- 00:20:22pause this video right now and just make
- 00:20:24your first YouTube video you can
- 00:20:25literally just open up the YouTube app
- 00:20:26on your phone you can hit record and you
- 00:20:29can just do a video talking to the
- 00:20:30camera where you're like hey I'm
- 00:20:32starting a YouTube channel and actually
- 00:20:33if you look back to my first Vlog that's
- 00:20:35basically what I did I was lying on the
- 00:20:36bed holding up my iPhone and that was my
- 00:20:39first Vlog because I knew that if I
- 00:20:40didn't take action there and then it was
- 00:20:42not going to happen and I'd be
- 00:20:43overthinking it so the key thing is to
- 00:20:46actually start taking the action and
- 00:20:48actually making the videos and by the
- 00:20:50time you've made about 7 you have a lot
- 00:20:52of context of what it takes to make
- 00:20:54YouTube videos and crucially you have a
- 00:20:55lot of context about whether you
- 00:20:57actually enjoy it the point I made
- 00:20:58earlier was that if you don't enjoy
- 00:21:00making YouTube videos it's just not
- 00:21:02going to like you're just not going to
- 00:21:03stay consistent with it this is not the
- 00:21:05sort of thing that you want to rely on
- 00:21:06discipline for you're going to get some
- 00:21:08Bros in the comments being like oh screw
- 00:21:09this guy you's saying you need to enjoy
- 00:21:10the thing like discipline good luck none
- 00:21:13of those people have YouTube channels
- 00:21:14because it's really really really hard
- 00:21:16to sustain any kind of habit unless you
- 00:21:18enjoy the process and you won't know
- 00:21:19whether you're going to enjoy the
- 00:21:20process until you made those first few I
- 00:21:23think seven is a good number those first
- 00:21:24seven videos so the thing that I would
- 00:21:26encourage you to do from this video is
- 00:21:27to give yourself a seven video challenge
- 00:21:30where you challenge yourself to just
- 00:21:31make seven videos they can be about
- 00:21:33whatever the hell you want but you are
- 00:21:35challenging yourself to make seven
- 00:21:36videos and then along the way you can
- 00:21:38sure watch the tutorials and overthink
- 00:21:40about the thing and take my course and
- 00:21:41all that kind of stuff but you got to
- 00:21:43make the seven videos if you're
- 00:21:44interested in doing this as part of a
- 00:21:46community challenge we actually have a s
- 00:21:48video challenge as part of our part-time
- 00:21:49YouTuber foundations course basically
- 00:21:51the idea is that you pay
- 00:21:52$297 and you take our little course
- 00:21:55where we give you prompts for all these
- 00:21:56seven videos but if you actually take
- 00:21:58action and make the seven videos we will
- 00:22:00refund every penny you've paid for the
- 00:22:02course you get the course for free you
- 00:22:04get the challenge for free if you
- 00:22:05actually do the work you want to be a
- 00:22:07YouTuber right you could probably make
- 00:22:09seven videos in the next seven months
- 00:22:10and if you can't then you're definitely
- 00:22:11not going to make it as a YouTuber but
- 00:22:13having a little bit of accountability
- 00:22:14having that little push and having a
- 00:22:16community of other YouTubers from around
- 00:22:17the world including me and my team kind
- 00:22:19of helping out along the way to help
- 00:22:21support you on that Journey might be
- 00:22:22helpful and like I said you pay
- 00:22:24$297 you complete seven videos in 7
- 00:22:26months and we will refund every single
- 00:22:28penny you get the whole thing for free
- 00:22:29when you get to Seven video number seven
- 00:22:32and Beyond video number seven at that
- 00:22:33point you have to make a decision if
- 00:22:35you've seen my previous videos on how to
- 00:22:36grow on YouTube you know you know what's
- 00:22:38coming part three what is your
- 00:22:39relationship with YouTube basically I
- 00:22:41have a whole framework for growing on
- 00:22:42YouTube we've got level one we got level
- 00:22:46two and we've got level three level one
- 00:22:49is get
- 00:22:51going level two is get
- 00:22:54good and consistent and level three is
- 00:22:56Get Smart
- 00:22:59so level one is kind of your first seven
- 00:23:00videos and the goal there is to just get
- 00:23:03going to not overthink it you don't need
- 00:23:04to worry about your Niche for the record
- 00:23:06everyone's always like what Niche did I
- 00:23:07have you can just make seven videos
- 00:23:09about whatever the hell you want and in
- 00:23:10our challenge we're going to give you
- 00:23:11prompts for those seven videos so you
- 00:23:12don't need to think about it we want to
- 00:23:14be thinking about our Niche a little bit
- 00:23:15sort of further down the line but when
- 00:23:16you get to this cross point between
- 00:23:18level one and level two once you've made
- 00:23:19your first seven videos now you have to
- 00:23:21ask yourself a question which is what
- 00:23:22sort of relationship do I want with
- 00:23:24YouTube do I want a casual relationship
- 00:23:27with my YouTube channel or do I want a
- 00:23:30committed relationship now a casual
- 00:23:32relationship is one where you make
- 00:23:34videos whenever you feel like it you
- 00:23:35make videos when it's convenient to you
- 00:23:37you're bored on a Friday night and you
- 00:23:39say hey you up and you hit record on the
- 00:23:42camera and you make a video randomly
- 00:23:44when you're free on a Friday night
- 00:23:45you're probably not free on a Friday
- 00:23:46night maybe you are who knows um but you
- 00:23:48have a casual relationship with YouTube
- 00:23:49right that kind of thing a committed
- 00:23:51relationship is one where you show up
- 00:23:53even when you don't feel like it a
- 00:23:54committed relationship is one where
- 00:23:56you're like you know what we're going to
- 00:23:57do a date night once a week or twice a
- 00:23:58week and I'm going to commit to that I'm
- 00:24:00going to commit to seeing you regularly
- 00:24:02I'm going to commit to publishing and
- 00:24:03uploading videos regularly regularly can
- 00:24:06be as regular as you like some YouTubers
- 00:24:08succeed by publishing once a month some
- 00:24:09YouTubers succeed by publishing once
- 00:24:11every 3 months it's a lot harder to
- 00:24:12succeed publishing once every 3 months
- 00:24:14cuz now every single video has to be a
- 00:24:15freaking Bango which is really hard to
- 00:24:16do I personally recommend once a week
- 00:24:18once every two weeks if you're really
- 00:24:20busy and you really can't make the time
- 00:24:21to do videos but you want to commit to
- 00:24:23some sort of schedule if you're really
- 00:24:24going to take this stuff seriously and
- 00:24:26if you don't have a committed
- 00:24:27relationship ship with YouTube then you
- 00:24:30know you can't really expect to be able
- 00:24:32to build a business around it you can't
- 00:24:33really expect to make money you can
- 00:24:35still have fun with a casual
- 00:24:36relationship from what I hear casual
- 00:24:37relationships can be fun but really the
- 00:24:40depth en Joy you get from a committed
- 00:24:41relationship I would know now that I'm
- 00:24:43married um is like nothing that you
- 00:24:44would get from casual relationships
- 00:24:46similar thing with YouTube yes you can
- 00:24:47have fun making YouTube videos every now
- 00:24:49and then but if you really want YouTube
- 00:24:51to be able to change your life like in
- 00:24:52the way it's done for me and a bunch of
- 00:24:53other people that I know where you get
- 00:24:55into that dream quadrant where you're
- 00:24:56making a ton of money and also
- 00:24:58having a lot of fun it needs to be a
- 00:25:00committed relationship part four the
- 00:25:01five C's of YouTube success I have these
- 00:25:05five c's for building a YouTube channel
- 00:25:07well underneath that the first C is
- 00:25:09courage it takes a lot of courage to
- 00:25:11start a YouTube channel and it
- 00:25:12constantly takes courage to show up even
- 00:25:14when you don't feel like it to deal with
- 00:25:15negative comments all that kind of stuff
- 00:25:17deal with your own imposter syndrome and
- 00:25:18overthinking and emotional hurdles that
- 00:25:19are holding you back it takes courage to
- 00:25:21feel all those feelings and do it anyway
- 00:25:23so courage is the first C the second one
- 00:25:26is consistency it takes a lot of
- 00:25:27consistency to see any kind of growth on
- 00:25:29YouTube if you are not consistent on
- 00:25:31YouTube it's very difficult for YouTube
- 00:25:33to change your life yes there are
- 00:25:34examples of people who have succeeded
- 00:25:36without being consistent my wife and one
- 00:25:38of our former students of our parttime
- 00:25:39YouTuber Academy is actually one of them
- 00:25:40she's only made about 50 videos in the
- 00:25:42last 3 years it's not very consistent
- 00:25:44she's been very sporadic with it but her
- 00:25:45YouTube channel has blown up um mostly
- 00:25:47because she has a lot of value to teach
- 00:25:50when it comes to doing videos about
- 00:25:51learning Mandarin and really focuses on
- 00:25:53the quality of her videos so yes you can
- 00:25:56sort of maybe succeed without being
- 00:25:58consider
- 00:25:59but I can count on one hand the number
- 00:26:01of YouTubers I know who have succeeded
- 00:26:02without being consistent and I know
- 00:26:04dozens dozens and dozens and dozens of
- 00:26:05YouTu of YouTubers who succeed while
- 00:26:07being consistent so consistency is the
- 00:26:09second thing the third thing is Clarity
- 00:26:11and this is where you have clarity about
- 00:26:12who you're trying to go after like what
- 00:26:13your videos are actually about who's the
- 00:26:15target audience what's the value
- 00:26:16proposition what are your competitive
- 00:26:18advantages in the space why should they
- 00:26:19why should people care about watching
- 00:26:20your videos compared to other people's
- 00:26:22videos this is also kind of the stuff we
- 00:26:24want to be thinking about once we've
- 00:26:25already made our first seven videos once
- 00:26:27we're beyond that GetGo stage at that
- 00:26:29point we can now worry about like okay
- 00:26:30cool how like what videos should I
- 00:26:32actually make then of course we have
- 00:26:35content the content itself in order to
- 00:26:38grow on YouTube your videos have to
- 00:26:40actually be good and there is an
- 00:26:41enormous list of things that we need to
- 00:26:42do to try and make our videos better
- 00:26:44over time there is writing there's
- 00:26:46scripting there's filming there's like
- 00:26:47set design there's audio design there's
- 00:26:49editing there's like the proof of work
- 00:26:51that goes into the video itself there's
- 00:26:52how much research that goes into it
- 00:26:53there's your persona and presence on
- 00:26:55camera if you have a channel where you
- 00:26:57show your face there's like dozens and
- 00:26:58dozens of these things and over time the
- 00:27:00idea is that as you keep on making these
- 00:27:02videos with a Bedrock of consistency
- 00:27:04without consistency none of this
- 00:27:05actually works but well my voice broke
- 00:27:07there I'm just super passionate about
- 00:27:08this topic without consistency none of
- 00:27:10this is going to work but as you keep on
- 00:27:11making videos on your whatever Cadence
- 00:27:14of consistency you've decided works best
- 00:27:15for you whether it's once a week or
- 00:27:16twice a week or once a month the goal is
- 00:27:18that with each video you're trying to
- 00:27:20improve one thing about it slightly you
- 00:27:23know the whole thing of like make 1%
- 00:27:25improvements over time the mistake that
- 00:27:26I see a lot of people make is that they
- 00:27:27focus on the improvements and they
- 00:27:29sacrifice the consistency but you cannot
- 00:27:32be in the early days of a YouTube
- 00:27:33channel you cannot be sacrificing
- 00:27:35quantity for the sake of quality but
- 00:27:37once you've got this Bedrock of
- 00:27:38consistency and you have a bit of a
- 00:27:39sense of who you're actually making
- 00:27:40videos for and what's the point and I
- 00:27:41guess your Niche then we want to be
- 00:27:43thinking about how do we make the
- 00:27:44content as good as possible and then
- 00:27:46finally the final King bit of this
- 00:27:49process is C4 cache this is the fifth c
- 00:27:53um if you interested in diving more into
- 00:27:55details about these 5 C's I have a
- 00:27:57completely free training webinar where I
- 00:27:59explored all these in like a whole hour
- 00:28:00where I give a bunch of stories and a
- 00:28:02bunch of practical tips on how to build
- 00:28:04up these 5c's over time that will also
- 00:28:06be linked down below if you want to
- 00:28:07check it out it is completely free and
- 00:28:08so whatever your approach to YouTube is
- 00:28:09whether it's business first or creative
- 00:28:11first or whether you're like I really
- 00:28:12want to make money from this or whether
- 00:28:14you're like I just want to kind of have
- 00:28:15fun it's still kind of useful to
- 00:28:17understand the framework and the road
- 00:28:19map for How To Succeed on YouTube I say
- 00:28:22How To Succeed on YouTube this is you
- 00:28:24know there's no one siiz fits-all
- 00:28:25approach here again it's not in my
- 00:28:27commercial interest to say say this but
- 00:28:28I don't have all of the answers with my
- 00:28:30course and with these YouTube videos and
- 00:28:32with everything that I do on my channel
- 00:28:33I think of myself as a guide rather than
- 00:28:35a guru my goal is to just share
- 00:28:38whatever's worked for me and what I've
- 00:28:39seen work for people that I know and
- 00:28:41what I've seen work for my students I'm
- 00:28:43not saying it's the perfectly right
- 00:28:44answer for you I'm not saying these 5c's
- 00:28:46are the only way you could possibly
- 00:28:47succeed on YouTube I'm saying they've
- 00:28:49worked for me it's a good framework
- 00:28:50that's work that's worked for a bunch of
- 00:28:51my students if you look at my website
- 00:28:53you can see a bunch of reviews from
- 00:28:54students including some pretty big
- 00:28:55high-profile people that we've had as
- 00:28:57alumni of the podast YouTuber Academy
- 00:28:59it's a framework that works for a lot of
- 00:29:00people but of course a a big part of
- 00:29:03succeeding on YouTube is that you've got
- 00:29:04to take these Frameworks and these sort
- 00:29:06of principles that other people are
- 00:29:07teaching you and you got to apply them
- 00:29:08to your own life and your own channel
- 00:29:10maybe you don't have a talking head
- 00:29:11educational Channel which means some of
- 00:29:13the stuff that I say about building a
- 00:29:14brand or scripting and all this kind of
- 00:29:16stuff might not work for you that's okay
- 00:29:18it's sort of like you learn from what
- 00:29:20other people are doing and you take the
- 00:29:21bits that Vibe with you that resonate
- 00:29:24with you that work with your values and
- 00:29:25what you actually personally want from
- 00:29:26your YouTube channel and you apply them
- 00:29:28to your own creative business okay this
- 00:29:29video has gone on for long enough but if
- 00:29:31you want to see more details about this
- 00:29:32life three part framework and exactly
- 00:29:34what I would do if I was starting a
- 00:29:35YouTube channel from scratch today check
- 00:29:37out this video over here and that will
- 00:29:38give you way more detail thank you so
- 00:29:40much for getting to the end of this
- 00:29:41enormous video and hopefully I will see
- 00:29:43you in the next one bye-bye
