00:00:00
the last couple of videos we've been
00:00:01
talking about the protestant reformation
00:00:02
but you didn't think all the religious
00:00:04
change in europe wasn't gonna cause
00:00:05
christians to start killing each other
00:00:07
in the name of jesus did you don't be
00:00:09
crazy so if you're ready to get them
00:00:10
brain cows milk then let's talk about
00:00:12
europe's wars of religion i reckon we
00:00:14
ought to start in france so in the first
00:00:15
half of the 1500s most of the french
00:00:17
people were catholic but by the 1560s
00:00:19
protestantism had spread into france
00:00:21
thanks printing press and again a pretty
00:00:23
strong foothold now the particular
00:00:24
flavor of protestantism that had taken
00:00:26
root in france was calvinism and french
00:00:28
calvinists were known as huguenots now
00:00:30
this wouldn't have posed much of a
00:00:31
problem except that something like half
00:00:32
of the french nobility were now huguenot
00:00:35
and they started agitating for
00:00:36
recognition and rights within france but
00:00:38
the catholic majority were in no mood to
00:00:40
do so and that is when charles ix took
00:00:42
the throne and he was a wee lad coming
00:00:44
in at 11 years old so his mother
00:00:46
catherine de medici essentially ruled in
00:00:48
his place until he came of age now
00:00:50
catherine was a very catholic and she
00:00:52
was pretty saucy about these french
00:00:54
noble huguenot demanding recognition and
00:00:56
writing so she decided that she wanted
00:00:57
to purge france of this cranky
00:00:59
non-conforming nobility not least
00:01:01
because they were a threat to her power
00:01:03
and so the french wars of religion began
00:01:04
in 1562 with an event known as the
00:01:06
massacre of vastly essentially a group
00:01:08
of huguenots were at a worship service
00:01:10
you know just minding their own business
00:01:11
and singing to jesus when a duke of the
00:01:13
catholic geese family ordered them all
00:01:16
killed now the huguenot were not a
00:01:17
strong enough force to take over france
00:01:18
at this point but they fought
00:01:19
defensively for 10 years and held their
00:01:21
own until the next massacre orchestrated
00:01:23
by catherine de medici namely the saint
00:01:25
bartholomew's day massacre at this point
00:01:27
it's 1572 and all the religious tensions
00:01:29
seemed to be solved in the marriage of
00:01:31
the catholic sister of charles ix and
00:01:33
the calvinist henry of nevada now
00:01:34
because henry was the kind of de facto
00:01:36
leader of the huguenot many of them came
00:01:38
to paris for the wedding big mistake
00:01:40
he's family who if you will remember
00:01:41
were responsible for the huguenot
00:01:43
massacre of vassi convinced catherine de
00:01:45
medici that all these filthy calvinists
00:01:47
were a threat to catholic friends so
00:01:49
under her influence charles ix went
00:01:50
ahead and ordered the mass killing of
00:01:52
these huguenots and that unleashed a
00:01:54
three-day killing spree in which
00:01:55
catholics slaughtered thousands of
00:01:57
huguenots throughout paris now henry of
00:01:58
navarre the champion of the huguenot
00:02:00
their leader went ahead and saved his
00:02:02
own life by promising to convert to
00:02:04
catholicism i admire your cowardice but
00:02:07
don't worry he showed true moral
00:02:08
fortitude by converting back to
00:02:10
calvinism just in time for the next
00:02:12
phase of france's wars of religion the
00:02:13
war of the three henrys now class how
00:02:15
many henries do you think were involved
00:02:17
in this war three that is correct so as
00:02:19
the religious and political tension
00:02:20
continued to build three different
00:02:21
henry's vied for the throne of france by
00:02:23
1574 henry iii was on the throne having
00:02:26
succeeded charles ix but apparently he
00:02:28
was not catholic enough for henry of
00:02:30
geese who was the leader of the ultra
00:02:31
catholic holy league and wanted to
00:02:33
assume the throne himself so henry of
00:02:35
geese with the help of the spanish
00:02:36
throne took the french throne by force
00:02:38
relegating henry iii to his chief
00:02:40
minister as a result of that henry iii
00:02:42
had henry of geese assassinated and then
00:02:45
joined henry of navarre to rid paris of
00:02:47
the holy league and he did it but in
00:02:48
1589 a disgruntled monk assassinated
00:02:50
henry iii and that left henry of navarre
00:02:53
to take the throne now remember he had
00:02:54
converted back to calvinism but he
00:02:56
understood that such an arrangement
00:02:58
would be none too popular and so he went
00:03:00
ahead and converted back to catholicism
00:03:02
man doesn't know principles regardless
00:03:04
by the time of his ascension in 1594 as
00:03:06
henry iv the french wars of religion had
00:03:09
come to an end one of henry of the
00:03:10
fourth major achievements was the move
00:03:12
towards religious toleration in france
00:03:13
embodied in the edict of nant in 1598 it
00:03:16
officially established france as a
00:03:17
catholic state but also provided the
00:03:19
hugo no freedom to worship without the
00:03:21
fear that they will be massacred or
00:03:23
otherwise harassed but my dear pupils
00:03:25
religious wars were not just occurring
00:03:26
in france spain was a major player too
00:03:29
now spain was ruled by the habsburgs who
00:03:30
have been in power across europe for a
00:03:32
very long time and spain was as catholic
00:03:34
as catholic can be now by the time
00:03:35
philip the second rose to power in 1556
00:03:38
spain was having some ottoman empire
00:03:40
trouble in 1453 the ottomans had
00:03:41
completed their conquest of the
00:03:43
byzantine empire by capturing its crown
00:03:45
jewel constantinople and with that
00:03:46
victory the ottomans decided that the
00:03:48
next best thing to do would be to expand
00:03:49
into central and eastern europe so spain
00:03:51
with the help of the king of poland and
00:03:53
the duke of lorraine repelled the
00:03:54
ottoman forces and that put the kibosh
00:03:56
on the ottoman expansion into europe now
00:03:58
philip ii was pretty upset about the
00:04:00
fracturing of christianity across europe
00:04:02
and it's hard to overestimate just how
00:04:03
much he hated protestants he decided
00:04:05
that he wanted to restore catholic unity
00:04:07
across europe and he set his sights on
00:04:09
the netherlands and england to rid them
00:04:11
of their filthy protestant influence in
00:04:12
the netherlands there was a growing
00:04:13
calvinist contention especially in the
00:04:15
middle class now philip's dad charles v
00:04:17
was relatively tolerant of this group
00:04:19
and he let them do their thing but not
00:04:20
phillip when dutch calvinist began
00:04:22
destroying catholic religious images and
00:04:24
the word for that is iconoclasm philip
00:04:26
ii unleashed targeted persecution on
00:04:28
them so william of orange rose to the
00:04:30
leadership of the dutch calvinist and in
00:04:32
1581 they declared themselves
00:04:34
independent of spanish rule now spain
00:04:36
also had england problems by this point
00:04:38
elizabeth the first was on the throne
00:04:39
and she was all about the protestantism
00:04:41
she supported the dutch protestant
00:04:42
rebellion that i just mentioned and to
00:04:44
that philip of spain said no no you
00:04:46
didn't so because of that and because
00:04:48
england had been messing with spain's
00:04:49
merchant ships philip sent the spanish
00:04:50
armada to invade england and teach them
00:04:53
a lesson but as it turns out the english
00:04:54
navy gave the spanish armada a smackdown
00:04:57
and that victory combined with the dutch
00:04:58
protestant rebellion meant that
00:05:00
protestantism was gaining a foothold in
00:05:01
europe now the last religious war you
00:05:03
need to know might be the most
00:05:04
significant and it was called the 30
00:05:06
years war and it occurred in the holy
00:05:07
roman empire now in order to understand
00:05:09
this you have to understand the piece of
00:05:10
augsburg of 1555 which offered some
00:05:13
degree of religious toleration in the
00:05:14
holy roman empire this document decreed
00:05:16
that the princes of the many territories
00:05:18
of the holy roman empire could decide
00:05:19
whether their subjects would be catholic
00:05:21
or protestant but and here's the problem
00:05:23
when i say protestant i mean lutheran
00:05:25
now as you no doubt know by now
00:05:27
calvinism and lutheranism were separate
00:05:29
but related strains of protestantism and
00:05:31
calvinism was exerting some major
00:05:33
influence in the holy roman empire but
00:05:34
since the peace of augsburg had only two
00:05:36
options catholic or lutheran in the holy
00:05:38
roman empire the calvinists were like
00:05:40
yeah that ain't gonna work so when
00:05:42
catholic ferdinand became king in the
00:05:43
calves territory of bohemia things
00:05:45
started getting saucy as ferdinand
00:05:47
started a program of re-catholicizing
00:05:49
bohemia the calvinist nobility were like
00:05:52
and to emphasize their point the
00:05:53
nobility threw two of ferdinand's
00:05:54
messengers out a window in an event
00:05:56
known as the defenestration of prague
00:05:58
defenestration being a fancy word for
00:06:00
throwing someone out a window now these
00:06:01
officials fell something like 70 feet
00:06:05
and survive catholics said they survived
00:06:06
because of the intercession of the
00:06:08
virgin mary protestants pointed out that
00:06:09
their fall was broken by a giant pile of
00:06:12
manure now whether it was mary's
00:06:13
intercession or the poo i'm not
00:06:15
qualified to answer but this event set
00:06:16
off the 30 years war now there are four
00:06:18
phases of this war you need to know and
00:06:20
that can be confusing but the big idea
00:06:22
to notice here is that as we go through
00:06:23
the phases like as we move from phase
00:06:25
one to phase four the motivations for
00:06:27
fighting go from being primarily
00:06:29
religious to primarily political so
00:06:31
phase one the bohemian phase in this
00:06:33
phase the holy roman emperor and
00:06:34
catholic ferdinand ii defeated
00:06:36
protestant forces led by frederick the
00:06:38
first at the battle of white mountain
00:06:39
the result of this phase is that the
00:06:41
catholics gain the upper hand and
00:06:42
re-establish catholicism across many
00:06:44
places in the holy roman empire then
00:06:46
came phase two namely the danish phase
00:06:48
in this phase king christian iv of
00:06:50
denmark you know that's the danish part
00:06:51
he took up the protestant cause not
00:06:53
least because he was involved in an
00:06:55
anti-catholic anti-habsburg alliance
00:06:57
with england you can see here the
00:06:58
political motive starting to bleed in
00:07:00
now despite this help on the protestant
00:07:01
side the catholics still won this phase
00:07:03
of the war and then came phase three the
00:07:05
swedish phase in this phase the war
00:07:06
begins to extend beyond the borders of
00:07:08
the holy roman empire and king gustavus
00:07:10
adolphus of sweden organizes the
00:07:12
protestant cause and armies and scores a
00:07:14
major victory for the protestants now
00:07:16
one reason the protestants fared so well
00:07:17
is because gustavus adolphus was a
00:07:19
military genius but the other reason is
00:07:21
because the protestants received no
00:07:23
smaller financial help from france wait
00:07:25
a minute if i remember correctly from
00:07:26
the beginning of this video france was
00:07:28
catholic so what in the fresh heck are
00:07:30
they doing financing the protestant
00:07:32
struggle against the catholics well this
00:07:34
is the major turning point where we can
00:07:35
see that the religious character of the
00:07:36
war has clearly taken a back seat to
00:07:38
political concern you see the only thing
00:07:40
the catholic french leadership hated
00:07:42
more than protestants was the habsburgs
00:07:44
and so they didn't care that the
00:07:45
protestants were fighting against them
00:07:47
they just wanted to weaken the habsburg
00:07:48
influence anyway the fourth and final
00:07:50
phase of the war was the french phase
00:07:52
and here france entered into the war on
00:07:54
the side of the protestants and fought
00:07:55
mainly with spain to assure that the
00:07:56
habsburgs would not rebound from their
00:07:58
defeats and in 1648 the 30 years war
00:08:00
finally came to an end with the signing
00:08:02
of the peace of westphalia and there are
00:08:04
a couple of things you need to know
00:08:05
about this major turning point in
00:08:06
european history first it essentially
00:08:08
marked the end of the religious wars of
00:08:10
europe second it amended the peace of
00:08:11
augsburg to include calvinism as a
00:08:13
legitimate fate third with that further
00:08:15
splintering of protestantism it
00:08:16
officially marked the end of the
00:08:18
medieval idea of a universal christendom
00:08:20
and fourth it kept the holy roman empire
00:08:22
weak and the rulers of individual states
00:08:24
strong and in that way it hastened the
00:08:25
decline of the holy roman empire i know
00:08:27
that was a lot but if you need more help
