coming today to show you just one
  • 00:00:18
intervention of the 131 interventions in
  • 00:00:22
the big behaviors and small containers
  • 00:00:24
volume that is going to be launching
  • 00:00:26
    release date may 10th
  • 00:00:28
um and it is i am so excited about it it
  • 00:00:31
is a very practical volume of dozens and
  • 00:00:35
dozens of interventions that uh line up
  • 00:00:39
with the trauma play components one of
  • 00:00:41
which is soothing the physiology and
  • 00:00:44
i work with children and their parents
  • 00:00:48
who have experienced the kinds of trauma
  • 00:00:51
    that have wired their neurophysiology
  • 00:00:54
    for continually scanning the environment
  • 00:00:56
    for signs of danger
  • 00:00:58
and so we're offering ways for that
  • 00:01:01
    child to risk relaxing
  • 00:01:05
in deeper and deeper levels of
  • 00:01:07
relaxation and the presence of their
  • 00:01:09
    caregiver potentially assuming that's a
  • 00:01:12
    non-offending caregiver and in the
  • 00:01:14
presence of the therapist and so we
  • 00:01:16
offer some playful ways to help that
  • 00:01:20
the still the struggle socks is one of
  • 00:01:22
the interventions in the book and it
  • 00:01:24
takes just a few very simple materials
  • 00:01:27
and i wanted to share it with you today
  • 00:01:29
because it's something that can be done
  • 00:01:30
even through the screen if you're doing
  • 00:01:31
telehealth with clients so i ask the
  • 00:01:34
family to find a sock that's very you
  • 00:01:36
    know
  • 00:01:37
meaningful for them a nice fuzzy sock or
  • 00:01:40
one that's got a funny saying on it or
  • 00:01:42
something for the child or teen and then
  • 00:01:45
i asked them to find dried i have hair
  • 00:01:47
    dried rice
  • 00:01:48
or dried beans you could do lavender
  • 00:01:51
seeds or even maybe even dried pasta
  • 00:01:54
    orzo grain something like that
  • 00:01:56
and they begin to fill the sock with the
  • 00:01:59
grains of rice or the dried beans
  • 00:02:02
    and it offers
  • 00:02:03
something that eventually will be able
  • 00:02:06
to add just a little weight
  • 00:02:08
    to the eyes
  • 00:02:10
in the relaxation work and that's
  • 00:02:12
    because again
  • 00:02:14
    children who've experienced trauma
  • 00:02:16
especially if it's been complex ongoing
  • 00:02:18
    trauma
  • 00:02:19
their brains and bodies have been wired
  • 00:02:21
to constantly scan the environment for
  • 00:02:23
signs of danger so asking them to
  • 00:02:27
    inviting
  • 00:02:28
    relaxation is tricky for them
  • 00:02:31
and so i never insist that a child
  • 00:02:33
closes their eyes but i do have a basket
  • 00:02:35
of invitations if you've ever seen a
  • 00:02:38
    child show up
  • 00:02:39
for a mindfulness practice session and
  • 00:02:42
    what the child does is
  • 00:02:45
you see their eyelashes flickering while
  • 00:02:47
they're trying desperately to relax but
  • 00:02:50
their body is almost betraying them
  • 00:02:53
    with the
  • 00:02:55
    pre-wiring of hyper vigilance of
  • 00:02:58
watching and scanning for signs of
  • 00:03:00
danger and so this invitation to make
  • 00:03:03
the still the struggle so it's not so
  • 00:03:05
much of a struggle um to be able to
  • 00:03:07
still their bodies and allow a deeper
  • 00:03:10
experience of relaxation we put the rice
  • 00:03:13
or dried beans in the sock we add then i
  • 00:03:16
keep a whole slew of essential oils
  • 00:03:18
around this tea tree one smells for me
  • 00:03:22
    kind of
  • 00:03:23
up regulating so maybe not the one i'd
  • 00:03:26
want to use for my uh still the struggle
  • 00:03:28
    sock
  • 00:03:29
    but this one is lavender
  • 00:03:32
and so assuming the child chose that as
  • 00:03:34
    a calming relaxing smell
  • 00:03:37
then i might add drops of that to the
  • 00:03:40
dried rice or dried beans inside the
  • 00:03:43
    sock and then
  • 00:03:45
especially if the caregiver is with me
  • 00:03:47
in the room we may together help the
  • 00:03:49
child or team be able to sew up this
  • 00:03:51
    edge of it and
  • 00:03:53
    then we have an offering
  • 00:03:56
to sort of take away the responsibility
  • 00:03:59
for the child to have to maintain their
  • 00:04:03
    own physical response
  • 00:04:05
letting them off the hook from that
  • 00:04:06
    while they enter into deeper
  • 00:04:08
risks of relaxation with a safe holder
  • 00:04:12
in the environment so that's um still
  • 00:04:14
the struggle socks one example of one of
  • 00:04:17
131 interventions that you will find in
  • 00:04:20
big behaviors and small containers so um
  • 00:04:23
just wanted to share with you today get
  • 00:04:26
your advanced copy and the release date
  • 00:04:28
    is may 10th thanks guys
