- 00:01:04to click we're going to show you in the
- 00:01:06whole video how to access these sample
- 00:01:09essays so let's start off with five
- 00:01:12don'ts these are five things that you
- 00:01:15should not do when using any IELTS
- 00:01:19sample essays number one is the most
- 00:01:21common one which is don't use fake
- 00:01:24sample essays I say that more than 95
- 00:01:27percent of the supposed band line essays
- 00:01:30that you'll find online are not anywhere
- 00:01:33near band 9 and if you are reading and
- 00:01:37copying people that have never even got
- 00:01:40close to the score that you're hoping to
- 00:01:42get then you're learning lots of bad
- 00:01:44habits but don't worry we've solved that
- 00:01:46for you by giving you these real sample
- 00:01:49essays we'll show you how to get those
- 00:01:51in the rest of the video number two
- 00:01:53don't just pick up the essay read it and
- 00:01:57think that you will magically through
- 00:01:59osmosis become better at writing you
- 00:02:02cannot read an essay and become better
- 00:02:05at writing by just passively reading it
- 00:02:08I think a lot of people have been
- 00:02:10convinced that all you have to do is
- 00:02:13read the essay and some magic thing will
- 00:02:15happen in your brain and you will
- 00:02:17improve that is simply not going to
- 00:02:19happen if you don't believe me think
- 00:02:21back to last month when the World Cup
- 00:02:24was on I think something more than a
- 00:02:27billion people watch the World Cup final
- 00:02:30were any of those people better at
- 00:02:33football after the World Cup final after
- 00:02:36watching two of the greatest footballers
- 00:02:39that have ever lived no you would think
- 00:02:42that that's ridiculous but thousands of
- 00:02:45students every single month fail the
- 00:02:47test because they believe all they have
- 00:02:49to do is just read lots and lots of
- 00:02:52sample essays it is not going to help
- 00:02:54you but the good news is we're going to
- 00:02:56give you these 10 strategies these 10
- 00:02:58techniques that will actually help you
- 00:03:01in the rest of this video another thing
- 00:03:03that you should not do is look at the
- 00:03:05essays and try and figure out why you're
- 00:03:09better than these students in some way
- 00:03:12or why these students are not good or
- 00:03:15these students are not high level let me
- 00:03:17tell you a little story about a trick
- 00:03:19that I used to play on my students in
- 00:03:22the British Council so on the first day
- 00:03:24of a new IELTS class with new students
- 00:03:27what I would do is I would give them
- 00:03:30band Six essays Bond seven essays Bond
- 00:03:33eight essays and ban nine essays and I
- 00:03:35wouldn't tell them which were which and
- 00:03:37I would put them around the room and I'd
- 00:03:40ask the students to go and look at these
- 00:03:41essays and give them a score and every
- 00:03:46single time and this is like hundreds
- 00:03:48and hundreds of students every single
- 00:03:50time they thought the band Six was band
- 00:03:539 and they thought the band 9 was band
- 00:03:56Six
- 00:03:57you are a student you are not an IELTS
- 00:04:00examiner if you had the knowledge of an
- 00:04:02IELTS examiner you wouldn't be watching
- 00:04:04this video most students look at a bond
- 00:04:066 essay which normally has lots of
- 00:04:10complicated words and complex language
- 00:04:12and think that it is very very high
- 00:04:14level most students look at band 9
- 00:04:16essays and think that they are low level
- 00:04:19band 9 essays are actually quite simple
- 00:04:22and easy to understand and very very
- 00:04:24clear most students look at bonds seven
- 00:04:27essays and think there's lots of grammar
- 00:04:29mistakes there's lots of vocabulary
- 00:04:31mistakes this must be a really low level
- 00:04:33student band 7 essays have mistakes in
- 00:04:37them please do not waste your time and
- 00:04:40your energy trying to find out why you
- 00:04:43think these are not good if you were an
- 00:04:46expert you wouldn't be watching this
- 00:04:47video the fourth thing that you should
- 00:04:49not do is look for things that you can
- 00:04:52copy from these essays and there's a
- 00:04:55very simple reason for that number one
- 00:04:57you are not doing a memorization test I
- 00:05:01know many of you come from educational
- 00:05:04backgrounds where the emphasis in your
- 00:05:06education system is just on memorizing
- 00:05:09things and that's how they test
- 00:05:10intelligence this is not a memorization
- 00:05:13test this is a writing in English test
- 00:05:16this is a can you communicate clearly an
- 00:05:20English test you cannot memorize words
- 00:05:23and phrases and chunks of essays and
- 00:05:26hope to just put those in on test day
- 00:05:29and get a higher score that is not how
- 00:05:32it works you can use these to improve
- 00:05:35your grammar and your vocabulary and
- 00:05:36we'll show you how to do that in the
- 00:05:38rest of the video but don't just
- 00:05:40memorize them it is not going to help
- 00:05:42you and number five this might sound
- 00:05:44really silly but a lot of students do
- 00:05:46this do not copy the entire essay and
- 00:05:50put it in to your response on test day a
- 00:05:54lot of students believe that if they
- 00:05:56copy a high level essay and then just
- 00:05:59put it in no matter what the question is
- 00:06:01that they're magically going to get a
- 00:06:04high score I don't know why students do
- 00:06:06this but they do please do not do this I
- 00:06:09don't want to be responsible for
- 00:06:10students failing the test so please
- 00:06:12please please do not do those five
- 00:06:15things it is a waste of your time and it
- 00:06:18is a waste of money these days the IELTS
- 00:06:20costs a lot of money don't throw it away
- 00:06:22by using these incorrectly but there are
- 00:06:26now 10 ways that we're going to show you
- 00:06:28that you can use them correctly to
- 00:06:31improve your rating skills and improve
- 00:06:33your rating score so this is how to find
- 00:06:35the 100 sample essays on our website
- 00:06:39I've purposely hidden them so that only
- 00:06:42students that are serious about getting
- 00:06:45the scores that they need will find them
- 00:06:47first thing you want to do is go to
- 00:06:49Google and type in IELTS writing task 2.
- 00:06:53it will bring up a list of different
- 00:06:56websites and what you want to do is find
- 00:06:59the IELTS Advantage One it might be
- 00:07:02number one it might be somewhere on this
- 00:07:04page just click on the IELTS Advantage
- 00:07:07one that should bring you to this page
- 00:07:09on our website ieltsrading task 2 in
- 00:07:122023 that's step one now I continue to
- 00:07:15watch the video and I'll show you in
- 00:07:18step two how to find the essays so I'm
- 00:07:21going to give you these 10 things that
- 00:07:22you can do these 10 techniques but you
- 00:07:25don't have to use all 10 of them what I
- 00:07:28would recommend doing is watching them
- 00:07:30all I'm picking the one that you think
- 00:07:33is your biggest weakness that's what you
- 00:07:35should always start with not just for
- 00:07:37writing but for all areas of the test
- 00:07:39don't work on things that you're already
- 00:07:42comfortable doing don't work on your
- 00:07:45strengths work on your weaknesses I know
- 00:07:48that's tough and I know as human beings
- 00:07:50we don't like to do difficult things but
- 00:07:53this is the best way for you to pass the
- 00:07:56test as quickly as possible and then
- 00:07:58move on with your life when you never
- 00:08:00have to think about this silly test
- 00:08:02again so I'm going to go through these
- 00:08:0410 now watch them all and then pick the
- 00:08:06ones that you think are most difficult
- 00:08:08for you or you think that you need to
- 00:08:11work the most on so the first thing that
- 00:08:13we're going to teach you is how to use
- 00:08:15sample essays for improving your idea
- 00:08:18generation a lot of students really
- 00:08:21struggle with this area and once you
- 00:08:24start to see what real band 7809 ideas
- 00:08:27look like it removes a lot of the stress
- 00:08:30because what you will notice is most of
- 00:08:32them are a lot simpler than you think
- 00:08:35you don't get extra marks for coming up
- 00:08:39with complex ideas you get extra marks
- 00:08:42for thinking of ideas that answer the
- 00:08:44question that are relevant to the
- 00:08:46question and most of the time these are
- 00:08:48going to be simple ideas so the first
- 00:08:50thing that you can do to improve your
- 00:08:52idea generation is don't look at the
- 00:08:56answer to the question don't look look
- 00:08:57at the actual essay take each one and
- 00:09:01cover up the actual essay and just look
- 00:09:05at the question and what we've done here
- 00:09:07is we've limited the number of questions
- 00:09:09we're giving you like a hundred essays
- 00:09:11but I think there are only like 10
- 00:09:13questions
- 00:09:14um so that will mean that you see a wide
- 00:09:17variety of different ideas so what
- 00:09:19you're going to do is you're going to
- 00:09:22look at the questions
- 00:09:23and think of ideas yourself so what I
- 00:09:28would recommend doing is not
- 00:09:29brainstorming what I would recommend
- 00:09:31doing is simply look at the question and
- 00:09:34think what is the simplest idea that
- 00:09:37answers this question what is the most
- 00:09:38obvious idea the most straightforward
- 00:09:40idea if I asked a hundred people this
- 00:09:44question what would be the most popular
- 00:09:46answer and if you write down a few of
- 00:09:49them and then look at the answer
- 00:09:53identify the main ideas they will
- 00:09:56normally be in the introduction in and
- 00:09:58they will be in the main body paragraph
- 00:10:00and they will be normally in the
- 00:10:02conclusion identify those main ideas and
- 00:10:05then compare with your ideas if you're
- 00:10:08getting similar ideas to these students
- 00:10:11the garban seven eight and nine then
- 00:10:13you're probably on the right track if
- 00:10:15you have different ideas that doesn't
- 00:10:17mean that you're wrong doesn't mean that
- 00:10:20your ideas aren't relevant but think
- 00:10:22about whether they are relevant or not
- 00:10:25are you getting different ideas because
- 00:10:27they're just different relevant ideas or
- 00:10:30think about whether your ideas are
- 00:10:33relevant or not if they're you think
- 00:10:35about them and you compare them and
- 00:10:36you're like actually my ideas are
- 00:10:38completely irrelevant that might mean
- 00:10:41that you didn't understand the questions
- 00:10:42you have to work on that more or it
- 00:10:45could mean that you're just complicating
- 00:10:46everything and making your ideas way
- 00:10:49more complicated than they need to be so
- 00:10:51that's Technique One the second thing
- 00:10:53that you can work on would be idea
- 00:10:55development so so this is taking ideas
- 00:10:58and developing them into main body
- 00:11:01paragraphs so step one look at the
- 00:11:04question understand the question and
- 00:11:06then identify the main ideas so for this
- 00:11:09person focus on their careers idea
- 00:11:12number one and
- 00:11:14have more time for themselves
- 00:11:16idea number two so there's two benefits
- 00:11:19two advantages here and then what you do
- 00:11:22is you do not
- 00:11:24look at the main body so you just
- 00:11:27identify those two main ideas and then
- 00:11:30what you could do on this blank piece of
- 00:11:32paper you could pick one so for example
- 00:11:35you could write an explanation you could
- 00:11:38write an example and then you could
- 00:11:40compare that with what the student has
- 00:11:43done in this essay so here focus on the
- 00:11:46careers this is because they have less
- 00:11:48responsibility and distractions in their
- 00:11:50lives compared to the couples that have
- 00:11:52a child so if it's the same then you're
- 00:11:55probably on the right track but you
- 00:11:57could also make this better you might
- 00:11:58think well I could maybe explain this a
- 00:12:01little bit more again you're not looking
- 00:12:03for exact matches what you're doing is
- 00:12:06thinking about what they have done and
- 00:12:08what you have done and this is just one
- 00:12:10essay you might look at five six seven
- 00:12:12other essays for this question and then
- 00:12:15look at all of the explanations and
- 00:12:17compare those with your explanations
- 00:12:19compare those with your examples and
- 00:12:21then that's going to help you develop
- 00:12:23your own the next thing you can work on
- 00:12:24is structure so what you can do is read
- 00:12:28the question read the whole essay and
- 00:12:31then think about the structure that they
- 00:12:33used so for example this is their
- 00:12:36introduction this is their main body
- 00:12:40paragraph one this is their main body
- 00:12:43paragraph two and this is their
- 00:12:46conclusion so what we're going to do
- 00:12:48here is discuss both views and give your
- 00:12:51own opinion this is the type of question
- 00:12:53that we're talking about here so they're
- 00:12:55using this four paragraph structure but
- 00:12:57then within each paragraph what are they
- 00:13:00doing so here in the first sentence what
- 00:13:03they have done is they have paraphrased
- 00:13:05the question they have given their
- 00:13:07opinion here
- 00:13:11they've talked about the first point
- 00:13:14here
- 00:13:17and they've given the reason for the
- 00:13:19latter point
- 00:13:21here
- 00:13:22so what you could do is look for more
- 00:13:25discussable views essays for example
- 00:13:28this one and you could compare them so
- 00:13:31are they using a similar structure here
- 00:13:33well it seems like they actually are
- 00:13:36they've paraphrased the question in the
- 00:13:39first sentence here
- 00:13:45they've given their opinion
- 00:13:47and they've said why
- 00:13:52they believe that here
- 00:13:54they are slightly different but again if
- 00:13:56you look at 7 8 9 10 of those you'll be
- 00:13:59able to see similar structures and then
- 00:14:01that is going to help you write your own
- 00:14:03structure so what you could do is
- 00:14:05actually go through them all if you
- 00:14:07wanted analyze the structures and then
- 00:14:11look at all of the differences between
- 00:14:13the different types of essays so you
- 00:14:16could go and look at for example here we
- 00:14:18have a causes and solutions essay where
- 00:14:21do they put the causes where do they put
- 00:14:22the solutions what do they put in their
- 00:14:24conclusion are there any similarities
- 00:14:26between the different students answering
- 00:14:29this same question and you'll start to
- 00:14:31learn the different structures and then
- 00:14:32use them yourself it's a great way to
- 00:14:35actually learn structures rather than
- 00:14:38just looking at them as if you give
- 00:14:40students just a bunch of structures they
- 00:14:43tend not to be able to use them on test
- 00:14:45day but if you do it this way it kind of
- 00:14:47internalizes it a lot better and they're
- 00:14:51able to use them rather than memorize
- 00:14:54rise them okay so when you're on this
- 00:14:56page what you want to do is scroll down
- 00:15:01there's a lot of information on this
- 00:15:03page so keep scrolling keep scrolling
- 00:15:06until you get
- 00:15:08to here sample essays
- 00:15:12now we have a lot of different options
- 00:15:13here continue to watch the video and I'm
- 00:15:16going to show you which one to click in
- 00:15:17step three the next thing you could do
- 00:15:19is work on your coherence and cohesion
- 00:15:21by identifying linking words or cohesive
- 00:15:25devices some people call them cohesive
- 00:15:27devices some people call them linking
- 00:15:29words so for example with this one you
- 00:15:31could identify that there are only
- 00:15:33really four linking words or cohesive
- 00:15:36devices here in other words for example
- 00:15:38for instance an in conclusion if you
- 00:15:41were to look at another 10 band 789 real
- 00:15:44essays and you only seen linking words
- 00:15:48are used very sparingly there are not
- 00:15:51that many then that would be a clear
- 00:15:52indication that that's what you should
- 00:15:55do most of these essays are not going to
- 00:15:57have lots and lots and lots of linking
- 00:16:00words in them because lots and lots and
- 00:16:02lots of linking words actually lower
- 00:16:04your score they don't increase it
- 00:16:06another thing that you could do is think
- 00:16:09about why
- 00:16:10they used
- 00:16:15each cohesive device so for example why
- 00:16:19did they use that well they were giving
- 00:16:21an example did they use it correctly
- 00:16:23well in this instance they seem to have
- 00:16:25that is helping you understand okay if
- 00:16:28I'm giving an example that's what I
- 00:16:30should use or you might Identify some
- 00:16:34linking words that they used incorrectly
- 00:16:36that is going to help you improve
- 00:16:38because identifying other people's
- 00:16:40mistakes is helping you improve
- 00:16:43your knowledge and your use of linking
- 00:16:46words as well remember these are real
- 00:16:48essays which means that they have
- 00:16:51mistakes in them they are not perfect
- 00:16:53perfect essays are not actually going to
- 00:16:55help you as much as real students that
- 00:16:58are at your level and have got the
- 00:17:01scores that you need and that brings us
- 00:17:03on to number five which is identify
- 00:17:06grammar mistakes as I've just said one
- 00:17:08of the best ways to improve is to
- 00:17:11identify other people's mistakes so what
- 00:17:13you would do is you would go through and
- 00:17:16highlight any mistakes that they have
- 00:17:18made
- 00:17:18so for example this one
- 00:17:21you could write here this is an article
- 00:17:23mistake
- 00:17:25here's another article mistake
- 00:17:29so by identifying these mistakes and
- 00:17:31correcting them you can think about the
- 00:17:33rules of Articles and your knowledge and
- 00:17:36your ability to use them correctly will
- 00:17:39improve not just articles but any
- 00:17:41mistakes so identify the mistakes and
- 00:17:44then think about why those mistakes were
- 00:17:47made or categorize the mistakes into is
- 00:17:50it a preposition mistake an article
- 00:17:52mistake a punctuation mistake and then
- 00:17:55you will improve too the sick thing you
- 00:17:57can do is also related to grammar and
- 00:18:00thinking about the different grammatical
- 00:18:02structures and tenses that were used in
- 00:18:04the essay on why they were used so for
- 00:18:07example if we take this essay
- 00:18:10obtaining this type of information in
- 00:18:13most cases means breaking the law why
- 00:18:16did they use obtaining Ing and breaking
- 00:18:20ing rather than furthermore up to obtain
- 00:18:24this information in most cases means to
- 00:18:27break the law and this will force you to
- 00:18:30think about whether this is correct or
- 00:18:33incorrect if you think that it is
- 00:18:35incorrect what is a better way to use it
- 00:18:38and why do you think that or if it's
- 00:18:40correct why did they use that here's
- 00:18:43another one however not only are
- 00:18:46Paparazzi hard to invade properties
- 00:18:49belonging to politicians take photos
- 00:18:52without their permission but also
- 00:18:55not only but also what does that not
- 00:18:59only but also grammatical structure
- 00:19:02allow this student to do why did they
- 00:19:04choose this grammatical structure what
- 00:19:06were they able to do is it correct could
- 00:19:09you use this grammatical structure in
- 00:19:11your essay again not copying it not
- 00:19:15blindly copying this and inserting it
- 00:19:17into your essay but adding tools to your
- 00:19:20toolbox the more tools that you have in
- 00:19:23your toolbox grammatically and for
- 00:19:25vocabulary then the better able you are
- 00:19:27able to build your essay on test day
- 00:19:30yourself number eight is vocabulary and
- 00:19:33improving the range of your vocabulary
- 00:19:35and you can do that simply by reading
- 00:19:38the question reading the essay and
- 00:19:41identifying any unknown vocabulary or
- 00:19:44vocabulary or collocations or phrases
- 00:19:47that you're unsure about you're not a
- 00:19:49hundred percent sure what they mean or
- 00:19:51how to use them in a sentence so so for
- 00:19:54example you might see the collocation
- 00:19:56discover their talents what does that
- 00:19:59mean to discover their talents
- 00:20:02here's another one potential talents
- 00:20:04what's the difference between
- 00:20:06discovering your talent and a potential
- 00:20:09Talent what does potential mean what
- 00:20:11does potential Talent as a collocation
- 00:20:13actually mean
- 00:20:15so you would note down those words or
- 00:20:17phrases or collocations and then you
- 00:20:20would guess the meaning from the context
- 00:20:23so you would read the whole sentence
- 00:20:25read the whole paragraph and try and
- 00:20:28guess what that word means that is going
- 00:20:30to help with your reading skills it's
- 00:20:31going to help you identify and
- 00:20:34understand unknown words in the reading
- 00:20:36test and it will also help you improve
- 00:20:38your vocabulary because you can take
- 00:20:40those new words or phrases put them into
- 00:20:43a vocabulary book add all the new
- 00:20:46information like the meaning the
- 00:20:48synonyms the example sentences and then
- 00:20:51after a while if you do this you're
- 00:20:54going to have a massive Bank of new
- 00:20:57words and new phrases and then if you
- 00:20:59review those and use those in your own
- 00:21:01essays then you're improving your
- 00:21:03ability to write essays another thing
- 00:21:06you could do with vocabulary number nine
- 00:21:08is identify any vocabulary errors so for
- 00:21:13example in this essay if we look at this
- 00:21:16sentence recently the pictures of a
- 00:21:18famous politician of Milan while playing
- 00:21:21football with local children were
- 00:21:23published in many newspapers and he
- 00:21:25instantly became famous so there's a
- 00:21:28problem here because it's saying a
- 00:21:30famous person became famous well they
- 00:21:33were already famous so either there is a
- 00:21:37meaning error here with this word or we
- 00:21:41need to change this word to something
- 00:21:43different another thing that you could
- 00:21:44do is look for repetition are there
- 00:21:48words that are maybe repeated a few many
- 00:21:50times and then you could try and change
- 00:21:53it to a synonym that means the same
- 00:21:55thing but has a different you know a
- 00:21:58different word that means the same thing
- 00:22:00and last but not least number 10 what
- 00:22:03you can do is look at the question write
- 00:22:07the whole essay and then compare your
- 00:22:09essays compare everything with what the
- 00:22:12students have done but I wouldn't
- 00:22:14recommend doing that right away what I
- 00:22:16would recommend doing is use you know
- 00:22:18one or two of the other nine techniques
- 00:22:21work on your weaknesses and then once
- 00:22:24you are more confident then you can
- 00:22:25write the whole essay and then compare
- 00:22:27it with what the other students have
- 00:22:29done and but please please please don't
- 00:22:32think that if your essay is different
- 00:22:34that it's wrong there are hundreds of
- 00:22:36different ways that you can write a bond
- 00:22:38seven or a Band-Aid essay it is not
- 00:22:41mathematics it is not you know there's
- 00:22:44only one answer to the question so don't
- 00:22:46look at these essays and think that
- 00:22:48you're on the wrong track just because
- 00:22:49yours are different what you're looking
- 00:22:52for is are the main things like the
- 00:22:55ideas are they relevant is the structure
- 00:22:58similar did you develop your ideas in a
- 00:23:01similar way if you focus on those big
- 00:23:04things then your essays will be fine and
- 00:23:06you will really really improve okay so
- 00:23:09you should be here the one that you want
