- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
The host discusses the origins and purpose of his podcast, which is aimed at supporting black men in expressing themselves healthily to counteract stress's impact on longevity. The episode features a guest, Professor Odie, who is introduced as a mental health and wellness coach specializing in Afrocentric approaches. The planned special episode around Father's Day will focus on addressing and healing 'father wounds,' offering a webinar aimed at helping black men deal with paternal-related emotional issues.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
Professor Odie explains 'father wounds,' which refer to the unmet needs from the father or paternal figure, often resulting in feelings of abandonment and a destabilized sense of self. These wounds can cause difficulties in relationships as adults, often manifesting in an inability to accept criticism or self-examination. The conversation then explores the societal role of masculinity in these wounds, challenging common beliefs and encouraging self-reflection starting from childhood.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
They explore how societal expectations of masculinity affect black men, emphasizing the need to detach the notion that masculinity is inherently tough or void of vulnerability. The conversation highlights the difference in responding to situations with hyper or toxic masculinity compared to balanced expressions. It argues that over-commitment to hyper masculinity can be harmful, leading to stigmas around men avoiding vulnerability and self-reflection.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
The podcast delves into the terminology of "toxic masculinity," distinguishing it from constructive masculinity and discussing how a toxic approach negatively impacts both the individual and those around them. The discussion emphasizes emotional suppression as a dangerous aspect of toxic masculinity, contributing to severe health issues and early mortality in men. The dialogue stresses the importance of breaking these harmful cycles by embracing a healthier self-image and emotional openness.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
The conversation addresses the dangerous habit of avoiding medical care due to toxic masculine norms, illustrating this with examples around prostate cancer. This avoidance can have dire consequences on men's health and relationships, underlining the importance of dismantling these norms. The speakers emphasize the necessity for men to overcome societal conditioning that discourages vulnerability and self-care, advocating for self-awareness and openness to receiving emotional and physical support.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
The hosts discuss potential solutions to break free from toxic masculine norms, emphasizing the importance of identifying personal emotional needs and seeking therapy. They champion self-evaluation and accepting vulnerabilities as key steps in addressing father wounds. Additionally, embracing behaviors typically seen as 'soft' or non-masculine, such as cooking or showing emotions, is encouraged to expand one's capacity for self-care and emotional intelligence.
- 00:30:00 - 00:35:00
The guest shares personal insights and experiences, advocating for men to engage in introspection and accept their own flaws as a path to healing. There's a focus on redefining traditional roles and expectations placed on men, urging them to explore newer methods of self-expression that foster healthier relationships with themselves and others. They call for a re-evaluation of gender roles, emphasizing mutual respect and partnership within relationships.
- 00:35:00 - 00:40:00
The discussion turns towards relationships, stressing the importance of understanding and valuing the contributions of a partner beyond traditional gender roles. Men are encouraged to break out of rigid masculine roles by learning new skills and being more considerate in relationships, highlighting the importance of mutual support and collaboration as opposed to adhering to outdated norms of male dominance within a household.
- 00:40:00 - 00:45:00
The speakers reflect on the significance of emotional intelligence and its role in building healthier partnerships. They argue that men must learn to assert their emotional needs and boundaries clearly while navigating relationships, recognizing and rejecting emotionally manipulative behavior from partners. The conversation underscores the need for men to choose empowering partnerships that equally respect both partners' emotional and practical needs.
- 00:45:00 - 00:50:00
The later part of the podcast digs deep into emotional health, advocating for self-talk that is constructive rather than self-deprecating. Numerous examples and personal anecdotes reinforce the idea that the way men communicate internally is crucial to their overall mental health. The dialogue encourages men to transform negative self-narratives into more supportive and positive internal dialogues to foster personal growth and healing.
- 00:50:00 - 00:55:00
Discussion around addressing emotional wounds continues with a focus on self-compassion and acceptance. Practical advice given includes observing one's impulses and exploring the root causes behind them, in a way that is non-judgmental and nurturing. Emphasizing that healing involves patience and kindness towards oneself, the speakers affirm that every step taken towards understanding personal past traumas is a step towards relief and betterment.
- 00:55:00 - 01:00:00
The guests delve into deeply personal experiences with familial relationships, underscoring the difficulties of achieving acceptance of family dynamics that might not change. Embracing the concept of radical acceptance, the conversation illustrates the importance of moving forward positively despite unchangeable circumstances, highlighting the notion of becoming one’s own source of comfort and strength.
- 01:00:00 - 01:05:00
The conversation moves towards envisioning a fuller integration of healing into daily life through intentional self-awareness and self-care routines. Initiatives like the creation of supportive community spaces are hinted at, aiming to facilitate collective growth and healing among black men. The podcast underscores the idea that continuous efforts towards self-improvement can build a supportive network that nurtures healthier emotional environments.
- 01:05:00 - 01:13:42
The podcast concludes with a call to action for listeners to embrace their healing journeys through resources like webinars and supportive communities developed by the podcast. It reemphasizes the importance of proactive mental health care and emotional openness in fostering a resilient and compassionate black community, urging men to take steps toward their empowerment and well-being.

- 00:02:52don't lead thoughts here and there you
- 00:02:54are a thought leader bro for a fact
- 00:02:55right you are such a thought leader that
- 00:02:58I have you inside a safe haven right you
- 00:03:00facilitate the group sessions that we
- 00:03:01have with the black man
- 00:03:03um you do that two times out of the
- 00:03:05month
- 00:03:06um you're also working with Safe Haven
- 00:03:08members yes um individually so I
- 00:03:10appreciate you and everything that you
- 00:03:11do bro one thousand percent I appreciate
- 00:03:13the platform necessary of course bro of
- 00:03:15course man so I don't want to keep the
- 00:03:17people waiting too much man can you tell
- 00:03:19the people what is a father wound right
- 00:03:21let's just let's break that down first
- 00:03:22before we even to get into it because we
- 00:03:24talk about it a lot
- 00:03:26um but there's some people that don't
- 00:03:28have a definition as to what it is right
- 00:03:31um and I don't want to make any I don't
- 00:03:32want to go with the assumption that it's
- 00:03:34self-explanatory so what what is it so a
- 00:03:39father wound is not necessarily
- 00:03:40self-explanatory but it sounds
- 00:03:41self-explanatory so a father wound is
- 00:03:44specifically a set of needs that were
- 00:03:47not met
- 00:03:48um from the parental that is the father
- 00:03:51or was the uh more I guess you could say
- 00:03:54more masculinely energized of the two
- 00:03:56parents
- 00:03:57um that father wound usually comes from
- 00:03:59a space of either feelings of
- 00:04:02Abandonment feelings of not being
- 00:04:03supported feelings of being actively
- 00:04:06persecuted harmed or bullied by this
- 00:04:08masculine figure and what that usually
- 00:04:10does for a number of people is that it
- 00:04:12creates spaces or feelings that the
- 00:04:14world is hostile there's a lot of
- 00:04:16destabilization there is not a lot of
- 00:04:19self-structure
- 00:04:20um self-examination usually is painful
- 00:04:22or it feels if though it's something
- 00:04:24that is difficult to do vulnerability is
- 00:04:27not something that's easily accessed
- 00:04:28because if you get too deep in the
- 00:04:30vulnerability
- 00:04:31um it feels as if though somebody's
- 00:04:32going to harm you or if it's as if
- 00:04:34though you're not going to have the
- 00:04:35support that you need in order to
- 00:04:36regulate that um regulate that
- 00:04:38vulnerability so ultimately a father
- 00:04:41wound is usually a destabilization that
- 00:04:43comes from the space of the father and
- 00:04:45it creates uh difficulties later on in
- 00:04:49relationships in the life oh my god
- 00:04:52listen man the definition in itself just
- 00:04:55stop the podcast right there
- 00:04:56we good to go that was a
- 00:04:59you don't understand like like that
- 00:05:01Carousel slappos 10 signs to identify if
- 00:05:04you have a father when you went right
- 00:05:05into it nah facts bro now I love that
- 00:05:08bro I love that man so listen can you
- 00:05:12tell tell because you talked about it
- 00:05:13just you talked to you you gave a little
- 00:05:16hint of it right like how does it show
- 00:05:19up in black man and specifically
- 00:05:22in relationships
- 00:05:25so once again going back to that idea of
- 00:05:28um you know the lack of structure or the
- 00:05:30unwillingness to yield to not
- 00:05:33necessarily even criticism but just
- 00:05:34examination from people who are other
- 00:05:36than themselves
- 00:05:37um which then uh in terms of thought
- 00:05:39training in terms of thought train
- 00:05:41stimulation it would be once again you
- 00:05:43would have the the self-examination
- 00:05:45would usually come after somebody has
- 00:05:47examined you right so the
- 00:05:49self-examination usually
- 00:05:51um is once again it's difficult to
- 00:05:53facilitate the reason being is because
- 00:05:55you feel as if though it's a harsh
- 00:05:58criticism instead of a uh instead of a
- 00:06:01loving curiosity if that makes any sense
- 00:06:03so looking at it from that perspective
- 00:06:05it's like yo
- 00:06:07you know everybody's out to get me this
- 00:06:10does not feel like you know somebody's
- 00:06:12really being uh upfront straightforward
- 00:06:15with me like you're not going to support
- 00:06:16me x y z a b and c so it's very much so
- 00:06:19looking at it from the perspective of
- 00:06:21your foundation or your structure not
- 00:06:23being uh solid enough for you to place
- 00:06:26your own self-concept on it all right
- 00:06:28let me ask you this right what role does
- 00:06:31the way we identify with masculinity
- 00:06:34in our society play into father wounds
- 00:06:37or do you feel like it has a role oh one
- 00:06:39thousand percent so
- 00:06:40as you all know I'm a huge bell hooks
- 00:06:43Advocate huge so my book club right now
- 00:06:46in my love classroom will be reading um
- 00:06:48a world of change right and in the will
- 00:06:50to change the first sentence and the
- 00:06:51first chapter on the first page says
- 00:06:53every female wants male love right but
- 00:06:56that's the thing we as men deeply
- 00:06:58associate love with femininity we deeply
- 00:07:00associate it also with sexuality so to
- 00:07:03then take that phrase and then replace
- 00:07:06female with male a number of men
- 00:07:08immediately would you would tell the
- 00:07:11depth of their homophobia right and so
- 00:07:13say the sentence say the full sentence
- 00:07:15the full sentence the full sentence that
- 00:07:17is on the first page of the first
- 00:07:18chapter of the book A will to change
- 00:07:21literally says every female desires male
- 00:07:24love and we're saying replace that
- 00:07:25female with male every male desires male
- 00:07:27love right and usually the love that
- 00:07:31they desire is from their father they've
- 00:07:32just been hardened and separate it in
- 00:07:35psychologically and psychologically
- 00:07:36severed from their younger child self
- 00:07:39that is still probably crying for that
- 00:07:40same father
- 00:07:42Jesus Jesus man listen I don't know how
- 00:07:46many minutes and we are but it's getting
- 00:07:48deep
- 00:07:51again let's go in the defense listen now
- 00:07:54look look we gotta dive into it right
- 00:07:56because we don't have these
- 00:07:58conversations as black men enough you
- 00:08:00know what I'm saying like everybody
- 00:08:01wants to pretend like I'm so tough I
- 00:08:03don't need love I can just go out and
- 00:08:04tackle the world I don't need to come
- 00:08:06back and do anything I don't need
- 00:08:08anybody around me like I'm good I got it
- 00:08:10on my own I got I'm getting it out the
- 00:08:12mud I'm straight but wait I got it on my
- 00:08:15own I'm getting it out the mud I'm
- 00:08:17individual I'm dirty I'm good right are
- 00:08:21we not supposed to be the protectors and
- 00:08:22the providers of that structure are we
- 00:08:24not supposed to be the protectors and
- 00:08:26the providers of that resource in order
- 00:08:27to be able to once again meet our
- 00:08:29physiological needs including being
- 00:08:32clean including having an environment
- 00:08:34where you can Thrive right so I asked
- 00:08:37this question a lot to the men actually
- 00:08:39the men in the safe haven group and then
- 00:08:40a number of my other groups I asked them
- 00:08:42when did you learn that masculinity was
- 00:08:44dangerous or who did you learn it from
- 00:08:47um
- 00:08:47yeah and the first person that they
- 00:08:49usually say is their father right so
- 00:08:53even if even if your father is
- 00:08:55physically present a lot of black
- 00:08:56fathers are emotionally absent
- 00:08:58oh
- 00:09:03God say that I'm saying it again bro
- 00:09:07even though a number of black fathers
- 00:09:10are physically present they are
- 00:09:11emotionally absent right what does that
- 00:09:13do yeah so emotional absence
- 00:09:16emotional absence makes it difficult for
- 00:09:18you to connect with your child past the
- 00:09:20age of you feeling that they are
- 00:09:22children
- 00:09:24even if you can connect with them at all
- 00:09:26right so for example let's say that we
- 00:09:29look at it from the perspective of men
- 00:09:31in child rearing right a number of men
- 00:09:34say that they don't want a child rear
- 00:09:36because that's what the women does you
- 00:09:38know that's that's what they're good at
- 00:09:40like women are more nurturing what I
- 00:09:42didn't say to these men or what I ask
- 00:09:44them is okay
- 00:09:45if that's the case
- 00:09:47do you feel as if though you do not have
- 00:09:50the capacity to nurture
- 00:09:51right do you feel that you are lacking
- 00:09:54of that entity within yourself if that's
- 00:09:57the case brother that's a lack of skill
- 00:10:00set that is linked to your inability to
- 00:10:03access vulnerability right
- 00:10:07bruh
- 00:10:08first of all explain child rearing too
- 00:10:10because there's some people that's not
- 00:10:11gonna understand I got you so raising
- 00:10:13babies okay you feel me being active in
- 00:10:16that child's life but being active in
- 00:10:18that child's life also includes being
- 00:10:19active in your own self so a lot of
- 00:10:22people a lot of people don't realize
- 00:10:24that raising an external baby requires
- 00:10:26you to re-raise your internal baby
- 00:10:29you're talking about that inner child
- 00:10:32so what happens when a man that's
- 00:10:34dealing with Father wounds has to raise
- 00:10:36his child they are able to they are able
- 00:10:39to beat their child bloody either
- 00:10:40physically or emotionally and not say
- 00:10:42anything because they were beaten bloody
- 00:10:44physically or emotionally and we're told
- 00:10:46to stop talking or stop crying so
- 00:10:48they're expecting the same thing from
- 00:10:49their children and they have believed or
- 00:10:51they believe that this makes them a
- 00:10:52better man because the because the
- 00:10:55largest tenet of malevolent masculinity
- 00:10:58and patriarchy is your ability to be
- 00:11:00beaten damn near to death and not say
- 00:11:02anything or the ability to not be loud
- 00:11:04about yourself being killed in order to
- 00:11:06be a martyr
- 00:11:09I think we need to take a break
- 00:11:13nah bro listen oh my God bro
- 00:11:19oh
- 00:11:25I need to take some time to process that
- 00:11:27one before I even fire off my next
- 00:11:29question think about it my guy think
- 00:11:31about it think about it think about it
- 00:11:33there are a number of black men who are
- 00:11:34more concerned with being immortalized
- 00:11:36than mortalizing themselves there are a
- 00:11:38number of black men who are more
- 00:11:39concerned with being dehumanized and
- 00:11:42humanized and when I say dehumanize you
- 00:11:44believe that your masculinity is rooted
- 00:11:47in your ability to sustain literal
- 00:11:49torture and not say anything let's
- 00:11:52dehumanizing you are making yourself
- 00:11:54into an object an object of taking on
- 00:11:57this horrendous amount of negative
- 00:11:59energy and not dispelling it in any way
- 00:12:01shape or form
- 00:12:05that is why it is toxic masculinity
- 00:12:07because you are literally a conduit in a
- 00:12:10tank for all of the negative things that
- 00:12:12have been done to you and you do not
- 00:12:14take the time to exercise those things
- 00:12:18I'm glad that you said toxic masculinity
- 00:12:20right because I know there's a number of
- 00:12:22people that don't like that term
- 00:12:26and I've seen some conversations around
- 00:12:28like masculinity can't be toxic because
- 00:12:30when you need men to build houses
- 00:12:32y'all looking for those men to be
- 00:12:34masculine okay I I I'm not gonna lie to
- 00:12:37you brother I despise that example
- 00:12:38because that example so the the rebuttal
- 00:12:41that I give is usually this
- 00:12:43if we think about masculinity as an
- 00:12:45energy we are the vessels to that energy
- 00:12:47right so if we're thinking about let's
- 00:12:49let's use an example a parallel example
- 00:12:51of spaceships when we talk about Hyper
- 00:12:53Speed Hyper Speed is a speed that is
- 00:12:56usually larger or quicker than that
- 00:12:58vessel is created to sustain that's the
- 00:13:01reason why it's called Hyper Speed now
- 00:13:03if we think about these spaceships and
- 00:13:05these uh in these TV shows a lot they
- 00:13:07don't go for hyper speed for the
- 00:13:08entirety of that TV show they go for
- 00:13:10hyper speed for a particular distance in
- 00:13:12time in order for them to get to a
- 00:13:14destination and they usually use it in
- 00:13:15order to evade something or to engage in
- 00:13:19another type of jump that will get them
- 00:13:20closer to their destination
- 00:13:23a lot of men believe that hyper
- 00:13:25masculinity is masculinity how it is
- 00:13:27supposed to be when the reality of the
- 00:13:29situation is every single time you give
- 00:13:31an example of what hyper masculinity is
- 00:13:34you realize that you are using a
- 00:13:35hyperbolic example build a house save
- 00:13:38somebody from a burning building go you
- 00:13:41know what I'm saying prevent a robbery
- 00:13:43but
- 00:13:44let's take it a step further
- 00:13:46most of the men
- 00:13:48who do these things are men in uniform
- 00:13:51right and firefighters they're police
- 00:13:53officers the Army their uh their army
- 00:13:57their their army soldiers right are
- 00:13:59these not the same men who have the
- 00:14:00highest rates of depression suicidality
- 00:14:02and substance abuse
- 00:14:08and why is that because they constantly
- 00:14:10have to go into environments where they
- 00:14:11risk life and limb and the people around
- 00:14:13them are telling them that that's what
- 00:14:14they're supposed to do is it really
- 00:14:16or was that just necessary for
- 00:14:20what's that just was that just a skill
- 00:14:22set necessary in order to solve that
- 00:14:23particular problem at that point in time
- 00:14:25so if you as a man are always primed to
- 00:14:28respond to something like that your
- 00:14:30body's not designed to do that so the
- 00:14:32rebuttal to that question or the
- 00:14:34rebuttal to that phrasing is is your
- 00:14:36brain and your body designed to be in a
- 00:14:38burning building at all times if the
- 00:14:40answer is no then you are still
- 00:14:41utilizing a hyperbolic example in order
- 00:14:44to supplement or to justify hyper
- 00:14:46masculinity if both of those things are
- 00:14:48hyper it is still a hyper situation how
- 00:14:50is your masculinity when you when the
- 00:14:52building's not on fire
- 00:14:54do you believe that your mind is always
- 00:14:55on fire brother
- 00:14:57because if that's the case that's an
- 00:14:58internal conflict you need to figure
- 00:14:59that out somewhere else
- 00:15:01all right I'm interrupting this podcast
- 00:15:03episode to let you guys know to leave a

- 00:16:00if you just take a few seconds out of
- 00:16:01your day to leave a review right now did
- 00:16:04you leave a review yet all right let's
- 00:16:06get back to the episode we need some
- 00:16:08time we need to listen I'm not gonna I'm
- 00:16:10not gonna Rush this conversation I'm
- 00:16:12gonna take all the time I need to
- 00:16:14process everything that you say because
- 00:16:17bro you saying a lot of you saying a lot
- 00:16:19of you're you're dropping a lot of gems
- 00:16:22that was that was so well said
- 00:16:24at first I was like where the hell is he
- 00:16:26going with this damn spaceship but it
- 00:16:28made perfect sense right like
- 00:16:30you're not supposed to be in hyper speed
- 00:16:32or hyper masculinity all the time no
- 00:16:34like there are situations in which you
- 00:16:36need to be in it don't get me wrong
- 00:16:37right right and with and that's a tool
- 00:16:39we have to we need to learn how to use
- 00:16:40these tools right like
- 00:16:44um somebody said something and I thought
- 00:16:46it made perfect sense and they said when
- 00:16:48you got a hammer everything looks like a
- 00:16:50nail yes
- 00:16:51or when you got a gun everything looks
- 00:16:52like a Target you know what I'm saying
- 00:16:54like true right and that's that's how we
- 00:16:56are as men right like a lot of times
- 00:16:57what it'll be is because we don't have
- 00:17:00tools and we don't know how to respond
- 00:17:02to situations we just same response
- 00:17:05every single time we're gonna beat it up
- 00:17:07or I'm gonna struggle through it and not
- 00:17:09say anything and that's what makes it
- 00:17:11toxic right
- 00:17:12exactly right and that's what we're
- 00:17:14trying to get into the conversation of
- 00:17:15because I've I've struggled with the the
- 00:17:19the the the thought process that there
- 00:17:21isn't a such thing as toxic masculinity
- 00:17:23right I started to use hyper masculinity
- 00:17:26instead
- 00:17:27um just to make people a little bit more
- 00:17:28comfortable but at the end of the day
- 00:17:31hyper toxic we know what we're saying
- 00:17:33right what we're essentially saying is
- 00:17:35you cannot always operate in the
- 00:17:38masculine
- 00:17:39there has to be some type of balance
- 00:17:43right like if you're always operating in
- 00:17:45something that means that you're
- 00:17:46imbalanced there we go you know what I'm
- 00:17:48saying like why can't we see that
- 00:17:50that's what that's what I'm trying to
- 00:17:52figure out because we exist in a culture
- 00:17:55that
- 00:17:58how can I explain this we existed we
- 00:18:00exist in a culture that rewards
- 00:18:02masculinity that exists that way so I'm
- 00:18:04going to give you an example okay when
- 00:18:06we talk about toxic masculinity the
- 00:18:07definition of the word toxic is a
- 00:18:10substance that affects the user I'm
- 00:18:12sorry a substance that affects the
- 00:18:14afflicted
- 00:18:16past the point of contact okay right
- 00:18:18that's what toxicity is and toxicity
- 00:18:21usually is from outside coming in so
- 00:18:24when we talk about toxic and poisons is
- 00:18:26usually a a function of this toxin or
- 00:18:30this poison being ingested or injected
- 00:18:33into your body right so when we talk
- 00:18:36about it that way the way that it is
- 00:18:37that we've learned how to utilize
- 00:18:38masculinity has been in such a way to
- 00:18:40demean dehumanize and quite literally
- 00:18:43like dissect to move away from right
- 00:18:47when we look at it this way that's what
- 00:18:49makes it toxic it the toxicness is not
- 00:18:52necessarily masculinity inherently which
- 00:18:54I think a lot of brothers here it's the
- 00:18:56way that it is that you wield and apply
- 00:18:58it in situations that are not necessary
- 00:18:59for to be wielded and applied and
- 00:19:01applied that way I love that breakdown
- 00:19:04bro
- 00:19:05I love that breakdown I think that makes
- 00:19:07perfect sense oh in a toxic part I
- 00:19:09forgot the thing that makes it toxic is
- 00:19:10that it it affects everybody around you
- 00:19:13including yourself explain that so
- 00:19:17as a man if you believe that it is not
- 00:19:21your job to raise your children the
- 00:19:23emotional labor load and physical labor
- 00:19:25law goes up on your wife and your child
- 00:19:27believes that somehow they've done
- 00:19:28something wrong simply because you do
- 00:19:30not believe that it is appropriate or
- 00:19:32masculine to extend that loving and
- 00:19:35physical care to your child when that
- 00:19:36child needs it you allow that child to
- 00:19:38cry right when a baby cries it we it it
- 00:19:43it alerts the brain in a particular type
- 00:19:45of way that places it in the flight or
- 00:19:46flight space right the mother will
- 00:19:49respond to it but because the father's
- 00:19:50fight or flight space probably has been
- 00:19:52burnt out by emotional trauma
- 00:19:55there's nothing there it's called
- 00:19:56normalized mail Alexa timeia and
- 00:19:58basically what that means is that it's a
- 00:19:59socialized it is a socialized push for
- 00:20:03men to remove their emotions from
- 00:20:04themselves and it happens so often and
- 00:20:07so deeply that by the time we become
- 00:20:09fathers husbands we don't know what our
- 00:20:14emotions are we usually just feel
- 00:20:16physiological responses from it
- 00:20:21like I said bro I'm gonna take my time
- 00:20:22with this conversation
- 00:20:24because bro
- 00:20:26yeah toxic masculinity that's the reason
- 00:20:28why we die earlier it's literally toxic
- 00:20:31you don't want to go to the doctor you
- 00:20:33don't want to talk about how it is
- 00:20:34you're stressed out you don't want to
- 00:20:35take care of yourself men die from
- 00:20:36suicide homicide heart disease all three
- 00:20:40of these things have to do with
- 00:20:40emotional regulation implosion explosion
- 00:20:44lack of care for self
- 00:20:49then I just tell you I'm gonna take my
- 00:20:51time and you hit me with some more he
- 00:20:53says he said you know what I'm gonna
- 00:20:55just hit him I'm gonna hit him I'm gonna
- 00:20:56hit him with some more I don't care I
- 00:20:59don't give a damn you taking this time
- 00:21:00to process this conversation I got some
- 00:21:02more boys
- 00:21:07do not chill at oh bro I love it bro I
- 00:21:11love it because we don't have these
- 00:21:13conversations enough man we really don't
- 00:21:15like what I was just thinking about I
- 00:21:17was having a conversation with somebody
- 00:21:18he's a prostate cancer survivor yeah
- 00:21:22um or it was a different cancer but my
- 00:21:24dad has had prostate cancer you know
- 00:21:26what I'm saying
- 00:21:27um and he was talking about how he told
- 00:21:31his brother to get checked but you know
- 00:21:34when it comes to prostate cancer you
- 00:21:36know what's going on yeah you know what
- 00:21:37I'm saying
- 00:21:38um so a lot of men are scared of that
- 00:21:41right or very uncomfortable with that
- 00:21:43you know his brother told him he said
- 00:21:46nah I'd rather not even know
- 00:21:49you rather not know
- 00:21:52that you have prostate cancer
- 00:21:54then get checked
- 00:21:56you so you tell me you would rather have
- 00:21:59cancer
- 00:22:01than go to the doctor and get checked
- 00:22:03they're going to war and if they go to
- 00:22:05war and if they die in that war it's an
- 00:22:08active Valor
- 00:22:12bruh I just like to me personally I was
- 00:22:14like all right bro that's why I draw the
- 00:22:16line bro like I don't give a damn you
- 00:22:18know what I'm saying and for me like
- 00:22:20my sis my dad has had it it's like yo I
- 00:22:22gotta stay up on my on my checks I gotta
- 00:22:24make sure because what I'm not going to
- 00:22:26do is turn 45 50 55 have a bunch of
- 00:22:30people that surround me that have a
- 00:22:31family people that I love that I care
- 00:22:33for and now I'm stage three stage four
- 00:22:35prostate cancer because I decided not to
- 00:22:37get my checks would you not call that
- 00:22:40toxic I would
- 00:22:42you know what I'm saying and then that
- 00:22:43goes into the fact that goes back to
- 00:22:45your point with you saying like don't it
- 00:22:46doesn't just affect you you know what
- 00:22:49I'm saying it affects everybody around
- 00:22:50you right anybody that has a
- 00:22:52relationship with you right anybody that
- 00:22:54relies on you in any way shape or form
- 00:22:55right because you not taking care of
- 00:22:58yourself affects your entire family yeah
- 00:23:00everybody want to be Mufasa but don't
- 00:23:02nobody want to don't nobody want to be
- 00:23:04responsible for everything that the
- 00:23:05light touches bruh
- 00:23:18I
- 00:23:20absolutely love it bro because you are
- 00:23:22dropping some gems right now man I
- 00:23:24really hope that they're listening bro
- 00:23:26you know now they are they are and one
- 00:23:30of the things that I like that we do on
- 00:23:32this platform is that we're not gonna
- 00:23:33just beat into
- 00:23:35man hey this is what's toxic and you
- 00:23:38need to stop doing this
- 00:23:40like that's all good right like create
- 00:23:43an awareness creating a conversation but
- 00:23:46also being solution oriented that's why
- 00:23:47we're doing the webinar that's why I'm
- 00:23:49trying to get men to make sure that they
- 00:23:51sign up for that sign up for Safe Haven
- 00:23:52so that they can work with with Brothers
- 00:23:54like you that are well equipped to help
- 00:23:55them do everything that they're going
- 00:23:57through right you're one of the men that
- 00:23:58are in our safe haven program that work
- 00:24:00directly with the safe haven members
- 00:24:02right for 75 a session right but then on
- 00:24:05top of that right like we want to have
- 00:24:07these conversations and facilitate these
- 00:24:09conversations so that we can be able to
- 00:24:10help people think through Solutions
- 00:24:13right so in
- 00:24:14you know
- 00:24:16in that light right I wanted to ask you
- 00:24:18how can we as black men
- 00:24:21start to work on
- 00:24:24Our Father wounds
- 00:24:25like what are some things that we can do
- 00:24:27what's something that an average black
- 00:24:29man can do right now to be able to get
- 00:24:31him some tools to work on it
- 00:24:42the biggest step for a number of men is
- 00:24:44it meaning that they were even harmed by
- 00:24:47the absence of the departure of or the
- 00:24:50behaviors of their father because there
- 00:24:52are a number of men who not necessarily
- 00:24:55idolize their fathers but idolize
- 00:24:56masculinity so much that they will not
- 00:24:59identify how it is they're criticizing
- 00:25:02their father is similar to criticizing
- 00:25:04themselves right so in other words you
- 00:25:07have to do a thorough self-evaluation of
- 00:25:09where you are not happy and understand
- 00:25:11how
- 00:25:14your lack of honesty or your lack of
- 00:25:16vulnerability with yourself has
- 00:25:17contributed to that unhappiness
- 00:25:20[Music]
- 00:25:23right so in other words what are you
- 00:25:25avoiding because it's too painful to go
- 00:25:26through
- 00:25:27oh
- 00:25:29that's a hard
- 00:25:31that's a tough you know what's crazy you
- 00:25:34know what's crazy
- 00:25:38it's not a tough answer
- 00:25:41but it's hard to accept right because a
- 00:25:44lot of men have the answer to that
- 00:25:46question they just don't want to accept
- 00:25:47it they yeah they just don't want to
- 00:25:49accept it right that's why whenever I
- 00:25:51talk about Safe Haven I always say we're
- 00:25:53going to connect you with a therapist so
- 00:25:55you can heal from the things you find it
- 00:25:57difficult to talk about right because I
- 00:25:59want men to connect that right like I
- 00:26:01don't want you to just say oh I'm
- 00:26:02getting therapy right and or coaching
- 00:26:05whatever right and I'm gonna start
- 00:26:07talking and it's gonna be I'm gonna be
- 00:26:09good like no no no no bro like that's
- 00:26:11not how this works bro no don't even
- 00:26:13sign up for Safe Haven if you it like if
- 00:26:15you don't at least don't sign up for
- 00:26:17that that membership is safe haven where
- 00:26:19you're going to work with a coach if
- 00:26:22you're not ready to start talking about
- 00:26:23those things if you are coming to me
- 00:26:27specifically my first task is to get you
- 00:26:32to self-evaluate past your point of
- 00:26:34comfort and I'm going to not push but
- 00:26:38I'm going to nudge you until I see that
- 00:26:40you're getting uncomfortable and then
- 00:26:42we're going to stop okay right because
- 00:26:44what that leaves you with is a sense of
- 00:26:46why did I get that uncomfortable like
- 00:26:48I'm I'm quite Adept at pushing people's
- 00:26:50buttons I don't know if it's a good bad
- 00:26:51thing right now so I try to use it for
- 00:26:53good instead of evil right but
- 00:26:57the key in that is self-evaluation right
- 00:26:59but also
- 00:27:01the second key so there's the first key
- 00:27:03is self-evaluation but the second key
- 00:27:05and this is the one that a number of men
- 00:27:08do not do well is self-acceptance
- 00:27:12right because in a very very very very
- 00:27:14very deep way
- 00:27:16a number of us as men are ashamed
- 00:27:19of ourselves
- 00:27:21because we
- 00:27:23do not or have not actualize the men
- 00:27:27that we want to be based upon our own
- 00:27:30fears and our own
- 00:27:33negative internal narratives so if
- 00:27:35you're not ready to fight to you that's
- 00:27:36the most negative version of you don't
- 00:27:38come to me
- 00:27:41because the reality of the situation is
- 00:27:43a lot of men is out here getting their
- 00:27:45ass whooped by their most negative cells
- 00:27:47but they won't say anything because they
- 00:27:49will have to admit that they're getting
- 00:27:50they ass whooped
- 00:27:54you gotta admit that life beating your
- 00:27:56ass first
- 00:27:59I said you know and you know why that's
- 00:28:00such a hard
- 00:28:02thing to admit because of how we've been
- 00:28:04socialized yeah right we can't as a man
- 00:28:07not be good right so when we start
- 00:28:11realizing damn I might not be good it's
- 00:28:14like oh hell no you can't not be good
- 00:28:15that's why the first thing a man says
- 00:28:17when you say how you doing I'm good I'm
- 00:28:19good I'm straight how are you are you
- 00:28:21really are you really we don't even
- 00:28:23think about the answer no I'm good bro
- 00:28:25I had a conversation with somebody
- 00:28:28love love love the brother you know we
- 00:28:30just had we did a podcast episode right
- 00:28:32before he came into the podcast episode
- 00:28:34I could tell just off his energy
- 00:28:36something was off you know what I'm
- 00:28:38saying
- 00:28:39um I was just like yo like like you good
- 00:28:41what's up he's like man
- 00:28:44um you know we lost lost our grandfather
- 00:28:47today was my grandfather today
- 00:28:49I was like damn you know I'm like I'm
- 00:28:51like that's tough bro I'm like you know
- 00:28:52like if you want to talk about on the
- 00:28:54pile we could talk about it if not like
- 00:28:55it's all good like I don't want to push
- 00:28:57you or whatever the case may be right we
- 00:28:58get into the podcast we start talking
- 00:29:00and I'm like yo bro what's up like uh I
- 00:29:03normally ask like how how the guest is
- 00:29:05doing I said yo how you doing first
- 00:29:06thing he said I'm good I'm like [ __ ]
- 00:29:11oh you're not good
- 00:29:14you know what I'm saying
- 00:29:16like I'm like yo bro like but I get it
- 00:29:19though you know what I'm saying like I
- 00:29:21understood that wholeheartedly and what
- 00:29:24I love about that episode
- 00:29:26is
- 00:29:27right after that I gave him the space to
- 00:29:30be able to talk about it damn because
- 00:29:32real quick what's up I wanna I wanna
- 00:29:33interrupt you real fast because I'm just
- 00:29:35dawned on me what's up
- 00:29:37do you believe that a number of men will
- 00:29:39feel as if though their imposters if
- 00:29:41they admit that they are not as good as
- 00:29:44they say that they are yeah so in other
- 00:29:46words because masculinity is so
- 00:29:48performance-based if I cannot do this
- 00:29:50performance does that not make me a man
- 00:29:52that's one two I really don't believe
- 00:29:54that we look at just the statistics of
- 00:29:57Our Generation right because once again
- 00:29:59we a lot of us come from the generation
- 00:30:01after like what happened during snowfall
- 00:30:03cointel Pro all of that right so there's
- 00:30:05a lot of PTSD there but also there's a
- 00:30:07lot of removal I really honestly
- 00:30:10truthfully do not think we talk enough
- 00:30:13about how it is that we as men have been
- 00:30:16impacted by this
- 00:30:19how can I say the amount of men who are
- 00:30:22trying to teach us how to be men without
- 00:30:24having men in their lives themselves
- 00:30:26right so the coaches the teachers the
- 00:30:29XYZ a b and C's how many of these men
- 00:30:31had men in their lives themselves
- 00:30:33fathers specifically and how many of
- 00:30:35them have taken the time to resolve the
- 00:30:37trauma that they experience from their
- 00:30:38fathers without passing it on to the
- 00:30:40young boys in their community so in
- 00:30:41other words do you honestly believe that
- 00:30:44the men in our community have healed
- 00:30:46enough to not
- 00:30:48say to you nah just get up because
- 00:30:50that's what somebody else told them to
- 00:30:51do no we haven't that's why the the
- 00:30:54default answer to a lot of stuff is bro
- 00:30:56be a man man up
- 00:30:58you good get over it like
- 00:31:01stop being a [ __ ]
- 00:31:03stop being [ __ ] you know what we you
- 00:31:05know what what man mean when they say
- 00:31:06that yeah
- 00:31:07it's like yo bro why are you even
- 00:31:10talking about this why are you even
- 00:31:11talking about your struggles bro like
- 00:31:12why internalize it like I am what's
- 00:31:15wrong with you you're not internalizing
- 00:31:16yeah
- 00:31:17until you explode why are you not doing
- 00:31:19that we all do that right like why are
- 00:31:21you not part of the Brotherhood
- 00:31:22you know what I'm saying and then this
- 00:31:24is where we just now we getting into it
- 00:31:26right I did a podcast episode where
- 00:31:28we're talking about masculinity deeply
- 00:31:29and what I always say about masculinity
- 00:31:31is just like we have a black card we
- 00:31:34have a masculinity card as man we got
- 00:31:36two cars right and our masculinity card
- 00:31:38believe it or not is way more important
- 00:31:41to us than our Black Card yep we don't
- 00:31:43give a [ __ ] about the black card if we
- 00:31:44lose the masculinity card bro for us our
- 00:31:46life is over what you know it's crazy my
- 00:31:49boy it's over you know it's crazy my boy
- 00:31:51what's up what color is that masculinity
- 00:31:52card because it ain't black
- 00:31:55this [ __ ] is white there we go it's
- 00:31:57white and the reason why it's white is
- 00:31:58because a lot of these things that we're
- 00:32:00taught about masculinity
- 00:32:03was actually passed down from
- 00:32:06white man
- 00:32:07patriarchy things that aren't even part
- 00:32:09of our culture they come directly from
- 00:32:1119 they come a lot of them come directly
- 00:32:13from 19th century Victorian Europe
- 00:32:16I looked it up the mat the the largest
- 00:32:19amount of masculine I'm sorry gender
- 00:32:23role ideologies that we engage in right
- 00:32:25now most of them come from 19th century
- 00:32:27Victorian Europe
- 00:32:29bro you know what's so interesting I
- 00:32:31went back to um I'll be in your comments
- 00:32:34every so often I saw your comments my
- 00:32:36Comics be hilarious yeah yeah
- 00:32:38[Music]
- 00:32:42I come at you bro I'm big man alpha male
- 00:32:47energy yeah
- 00:32:50I'll tell you something right now
- 00:32:52I don't know many alpha males
- 00:32:55that are in the comments
- 00:32:57arguing with other men and women nope so
- 00:32:59if you think you are alpha and you're in
- 00:33:01the comments arguing and debating your
- 00:33:03status and your standards and your
- 00:33:04morals and your values with other people
- 00:33:05sorry brother
- 00:33:09you ain't it that ain't it I'm sorry
- 00:33:12brother you ain't one of them
- 00:33:13[Laughter]
- 00:33:24now here's what I say about that too
- 00:33:26right I'm all for affirming yourself I
- 00:33:29always have I have an affirmation black
- 00:33:30man you're him you know what I'm saying
- 00:33:33I say I'm him every so often right yep I
- 00:33:35don't give a damn if anybody else has it
- 00:33:36right and this this is my point what I'm
- 00:33:38trying to say is why do y'all care so
- 00:33:40much about what everybody else thinks
- 00:33:41about what your standards and your
- 00:33:42values are then we don't have to argue
- 00:33:44with somebody that to me says that you
- 00:33:47have some doubts some insecurities you
- 00:33:52have to bash the other person's argument
- 00:33:53I don't like me personally it used to
- 00:33:56get to me I ain't gonna lie when I see
- 00:33:57comments and people just don't get it
- 00:33:59and they're trying to argue with me
- 00:34:00about what I what my viewpoint is and I
- 00:34:03got to the point I'm like why does it
- 00:34:05matter
- 00:34:06what Tom
- 00:34:101987.65 numbers
- 00:34:12like I don't even know this guy he
- 00:34:15doesn't know me why does it matter what
- 00:34:17this person thinks you know what I'm
- 00:34:18saying so I don't have to sit here argue
- 00:34:20with that person it doesn't make sense
- 00:34:22for me to do that so like that's like I
- 00:34:25just that I personally don't understand
- 00:34:26but let me get back to the point because
- 00:34:28we did a little segue right I saw it I
- 00:34:30saw your comments
- 00:34:31somebody you were talking about
- 00:34:33something and we and then you started
- 00:34:34talking about tribes in Africa and how
- 00:34:37they have Queen mothers
- 00:34:39and I went back to Ghana Ashanti region
- 00:34:41yes we have a queen mother there we go
- 00:34:43you know what I'm saying a lot of us
- 00:34:45don't understand that a lot of our
- 00:34:48original culture
- 00:34:50women were at the head it was
- 00:34:53matrilineal you know what I'm saying
- 00:34:54matriarchal yes yes women were at the
- 00:34:57head
- 00:34:57and we come to the United States and
- 00:35:00it's like we feel like
- 00:35:02it's supposed to be male dominated male
- 00:35:05everything
- 00:35:06don't get me wrong bro
- 00:35:08I believe in being
- 00:35:10a leader you know head of the household
- 00:35:13that type of thing I get that I
- 00:35:15understand that but the way that I talk
- 00:35:17about it with Naima who's my girl we
- 00:35:19have these conversations she says her
- 00:35:22mom told her there's no head without the
- 00:35:24neck yes you know what I'm saying like
- 00:35:26it's awesome and the neck
- 00:35:29is you're a partner right right and so
- 00:35:32when we talk about leadership and we
- 00:35:33talk about relationships and how these
- 00:35:35things work we have to understand bro
- 00:35:38like until you understand the importance
- 00:35:40and the value of if we're talking about
- 00:35:43hetero relationships the importance and
- 00:35:45the value of women you will never be an
- 00:35:48effective leader as a man in that
- 00:35:50romantic relationship in my opinion
- 00:35:52right because you're devaluing
- 00:35:55a valuable a clearly valuable member of
- 00:35:59the team
- 00:36:01100 like that doesn't make sense and
- 00:36:03from for the brothers that watch sports
- 00:36:06that get upset at certain coaches that
- 00:36:08don't know how to play players right
- 00:36:10you're doing the same thing in a
- 00:36:12relationship when you have somebody
- 00:36:13that's on your team and you won't allow
- 00:36:15them to operate in their role the real
- 00:36:17operating their strength not the road
- 00:36:21hold on
- 00:36:24you gotta be recovered by that word yeah
- 00:36:29no not even you the brothers they'll be
- 00:36:33like yeah yeah you're wrong you heard
- 00:36:34that no no no play to the strengths my
- 00:36:37boy hold on now hold on I'll play to the
- 00:36:40strength and let me let me add to that
- 00:36:41remember your thought bro let me add to
- 00:36:43that because I wanna I wanna drive this
- 00:36:44point home right
- 00:36:46I always talk about cooking and cleaning
- 00:36:47I want not anyone to cook and clean I
- 00:36:49want my girl to cook and clean all these
- 00:36:50different kind of things bro most of the
- 00:36:52times when I you know because Naim and I
- 00:36:54are doing long distance most of the
- 00:36:55times when I visit her I'm the one doing
- 00:36:57a lot of the cooking right because she's
- 00:36:59working she goes out to work right so
- 00:37:01she's not in the crib how inconsiderate
- 00:37:03would I be if she's in a she's not in
- 00:37:05the crib we don't have anything to eat
- 00:37:07and I'm waiting for her to come back
- 00:37:09from work to cook extremely how
- 00:37:12inconsiderate would I be you know what
- 00:37:13I'm saying like nah get up off your ass
- 00:37:15and go cook something and go make a meal
- 00:37:17you know how to cook you know how to
- 00:37:18take care of yourself and this is the
- 00:37:19thing too right a lot of men don't know
- 00:37:21how to take care of themselves you
- 00:37:23haven't lived by yourself you don't know
- 00:37:25what it's like to live by yourself you
- 00:37:27don't know how to take care of yourself
- 00:37:28and you're expecting someone to come in
- 00:37:31and do it for you and do it for you and
- 00:37:33then you get mad when they do it when
- 00:37:35they don't do it or they don't know how
- 00:37:37to do it but you don't even know how to
- 00:37:39do it yourself how you gonna get mad at
- 00:37:40somebody for cooking something and
- 00:37:42feeding it to you when you don't even
- 00:37:43know what you want to eat
- 00:37:45man and listen And when I say all this
- 00:37:48I'm not trying to disrespect any man
- 00:37:50that's in this position I just get
- 00:37:52animated because I understand how this
- 00:37:55is negatively impacting a lot of
- 00:37:57relationships and we don't have these
- 00:37:58conversations enough a lot of men don't
- 00:38:00even think they need to learn how to
- 00:38:01cook
- 00:38:02which is crazy to me which is wild to me
- 00:38:04I don't care if you're in a relationship
- 00:38:06where the part your your partner is
- 00:38:08always cooking bro I don't care what
- 00:38:10happens if they get sick Mama keep it
- 00:38:12being with you I'm Gonna Keep it a lean
- 00:38:14being what's up
- 00:38:16what a lot of what a lot of men don't
- 00:38:19know
- 00:38:20is that if you cook for a woman bro like
- 00:38:23if you really really like sit down learn
- 00:38:26how to learn what she likes to eat learn
- 00:38:28her flavor palette learn all of that and
- 00:38:31cook for her
- 00:38:33boy what you don't gotta ask that woman
- 00:38:35for nothing else oh nothing of course
- 00:38:37right I cook for my partner on a regular
- 00:38:39basis on a regular basis baby I'm hungry
- 00:38:41okay what you want to eat right reason
- 00:38:43being is because that's so I'm gonna say
- 00:38:46it to you like this you want this woman
- 00:38:48to do all of these things for you right
- 00:38:49you realize that that requires energy it
- 00:38:53requires time it requires resource if
- 00:38:56you are not providing money if you are
- 00:38:59not providing emotional stability
- 00:39:01because you at the very least not just
- 00:39:03provide calories the caloric Surplus
- 00:39:06that is necessary in order for her to do
- 00:39:08all of the things that you are asking
- 00:39:10her to do when you break it down like
- 00:39:12that it's like damn bro you know what
- 00:39:15I'm saying like you gotta nah man I love
- 00:39:18that because that's the same thing I do
- 00:39:20with with
- 00:39:21um Naima like I know nameless favorite
- 00:39:24meal that I make personally right salmon
- 00:39:26mashed potatoes veggies
- 00:39:29they're all exact you know what I'm
- 00:39:31saying chill and salmon is like that's
- 00:39:38and have in the middle just like yeah
- 00:39:41that's enough it's only like 15 20
- 00:39:43minutes yeah but yeah you know for me
- 00:39:45but the reason why I say I was 30 is
- 00:39:47because of prep time all that other
- 00:39:48extra stuff you know what I'm saying but
- 00:39:50cooking the actual cooking of it 15 20
- 00:39:53minutes don't take long I bake it you
- 00:39:54know what I'm saying so like when you
- 00:39:56actually like really spend that time
- 00:39:58like there's I don't
- 00:40:00here's what I'll say right because I
- 00:40:02have a man I have a friend that's in a
- 00:40:04relationship right now where he does
- 00:40:06cook and she she was just having a
- 00:40:08conversation I was like listen bro
- 00:40:10you know you talk to your man you like
- 00:40:13you try to tell him like Hey Hey Hey Hey
- 00:40:15Brother Hey hey hey hey let's let's do
- 00:40:19this this is not be the one brother
- 00:40:21listen I love you to death and I'm not
- 00:40:23trying to tell you what to do bro but
- 00:40:25hey hey now hey bro my man cooked uh
- 00:40:31he cooked pineapple fried rice
- 00:40:34yeah yeah it gets crazy I'm listening
- 00:40:37Pineapple fried rice with chicken
- 00:40:39he had a sliced pineapple
- 00:40:42carved out the inside of the pineapple
- 00:40:43use that pineapple that he carved out to
- 00:40:45cook the rice put the rice back in the
- 00:40:48pineapple and served it to her you
- 00:40:49showed me a video of it so it's not cat
- 00:40:51it's fantastic show me a video of it I
- 00:40:54think I took argument a whole issue not
- 00:40:55because of that but just like they had a
- 00:40:57they had other like other disagreement
- 00:40:59and I was just like yo bro listen
- 00:41:03I ain't like the way you know I don't
- 00:41:05know I don't know about the conversation
- 00:41:06and how things went you know all these
- 00:41:08different things was happening and I was
- 00:41:10like yeah bro I don't know bro I try to
- 00:41:12give him the little you know let's try
- 00:41:14to nudge him in the right direction like
- 00:41:15bro listen I used to go through a
- 00:41:17situation and that relationship didn't
- 00:41:18end up working out so
- 00:41:22you take what you need to from that yeah
- 00:41:24I'll be trying to tell Brothers man like
- 00:41:26stop engaging with women who are
- 00:41:28dehumanizing to you simply because they
- 00:41:29got good [ __ ]
- 00:41:31oh
- 00:41:33like you would allow somebody to pay you
- 00:41:35to dehumanize you and you would allow
- 00:41:36somebody to [ __ ] you out of your
- 00:41:37Humanity that's crazy to me
- 00:41:39oh my God
- 00:41:43it's a whole different meaning to the
- 00:41:44word Soul snatch your boy dang
- 00:41:47that's crazy but you know what another
- 00:41:49thing is too that I realized for myself
- 00:41:51a lot of men aren't comfortable being
- 00:41:54alone no
- 00:41:56because they got to be alone with their
- 00:41:58own thoughts they gotta be alone with
- 00:41:59their own thoughts and also don't know
- 00:42:00how to take care of themselves
- 00:42:03my whole life I've been taught that I
- 00:42:04don't need to take care of myself
- 00:42:07a lot of men are you know it's crazy
- 00:42:09we're conditioned to believe that
- 00:42:11there's going to be a woman to come in
- 00:42:12and quote unquote complete us like I
- 00:42:14can't stand oh my brother brother I
- 00:42:17cannot stand I cannot stand the way that
- 00:42:20relationships are marketed in the United
- 00:42:22States because they are marketed so
- 00:42:23codependently it annoys me it annoys me
- 00:42:27like especially with women because when
- 00:42:29women say oh I want a man to do x y z a
- 00:42:31b and c okay
- 00:42:33let me ask you a very firm question
- 00:42:35because there's absolutely nothing wrong
- 00:42:36with asking for that reciprocation but
- 00:42:39at some point you are falling into the
- 00:42:41malevolent patriarchal role of being an
- 00:42:44infantilized woman so do you really want
- 00:42:46to be infantilized do you really want to
- 00:42:48be disempowered like that do you really
- 00:42:51because the answer for a number of women
- 00:42:52is no
- 00:42:54they do not
- 00:42:55um
- 00:42:56bro we've we've went on an amazing segue
- 00:42:59into relationships and I love it because
- 00:43:01we got to realize how these wounds
- 00:43:04impact
- 00:43:05how we see ourselves and also how we
- 00:43:08interact with other people Ryan I think
- 00:43:10initially what got us into this
- 00:43:11conversation was talking about toxic
- 00:43:13masculinity and how engaging in like
- 00:43:16hyper masculinity all the time impacts
- 00:43:18the people around you right like the
- 00:43:20relationships that you have and like I
- 00:43:22said always solution oriented so I want
- 00:43:25to get men to have some tools right what
- 00:43:29are some things that they can do
- 00:43:31if a man has identified with some of
- 00:43:33these things it's like yo I don't know
- 00:43:35how to take care of myself I may be too
- 00:43:36uh hyper masculine at times like what
- 00:43:39are some things that he can do to help
- 00:43:43so I'm a I'm a fan of like how can I say
- 00:43:46ripping off the Band-Aid okay so
- 00:43:48whatever it is that you believe to be
- 00:43:49soft immediately start trying to do that
- 00:43:51okay very simple just like you said a
- 00:43:53number of men already have the answer
- 00:43:54they just don't want to accept it learn
- 00:43:56to accept the answers that you don't
- 00:43:58want to accept right anything that your
- 00:44:00homeboys clown you for start doing it
- 00:44:02find some other homeboys right I love
- 00:44:04that understand what it is
- 00:44:07deeply
- 00:44:08understand what it means to take care of
- 00:44:10yourself get get reacquainted with your
- 00:44:13body right and what I mean by that is
- 00:44:15brother
- 00:44:17if you are constantly on go mode you
- 00:44:19don't know how your internal World feels
- 00:44:21when you stop
- 00:44:23if you are constantly hustling you do
- 00:44:26not know what it feels like when you
- 00:44:27stop
- 00:44:28right so a number of men call themselves
- 00:44:32sharks do you know that sharks have to
- 00:44:34consistently swim otherwise they will
- 00:44:36die
- 00:44:38they have to constantly swim
- 00:44:40right because the way that a shark the
- 00:44:42way because the shark is the apex
- 00:44:43predator
- 00:44:45it has no evolutionary methods to
- 00:44:47attract prey to it so it's not like a
- 00:44:50sea anemone that has multiple arms that
- 00:44:52wave in the ocean that attract
- 00:44:54particular types of Critters to it no a
- 00:44:57shark literally got to go get everything
- 00:44:58out the mud and if you don't you're
- 00:45:00gonna die
- 00:45:02that's a
- 00:45:03that's a terrifying space to be in but
- 00:45:05also sharks have the smallest brains of
- 00:45:07aquatic
- 00:45:08one of the smallest Birds is literally a
- 00:45:11being that operates solely on impulse I
- 00:45:14need you to check every single one of
- 00:45:16your impulses and identify where they
- 00:45:18come from so when you want to smoke why
- 00:45:20when you want to [ __ ] why when you want
- 00:45:23to pop a pill why when you want to drink
- 00:45:25why
- 00:45:27what are you attempting to numb what are
- 00:45:29you attempting to run from
- 00:45:31approach it softly and gently instead of
- 00:45:33trying to beat it out of yourself
- 00:45:37what would approaching it softly and
- 00:45:39gently look like because I think a lot
- 00:45:40of men don't even know what that looks
- 00:45:42like we're so accustomed to
- 00:45:44man you messing up you want to drink
- 00:45:46right now you know that's advice or you
- 00:45:48want to smoke you know that's advice
- 00:45:49like what's wrong with you like they
- 00:45:52don't know how to
- 00:45:54really like be soft in general so what
- 00:45:56are some things that they can do when
- 00:45:58they are identifying things that they
- 00:46:00need to work through and it's hard for
- 00:46:01them to be
- 00:46:02soft with himself so the illustration
- 00:46:04that I usually give
- 00:46:06um the episode of Naruto Shippuden when
- 00:46:08Naruto went to the Village of the Hidden
- 00:46:10cloud and he learned how to manage
- 00:46:13Kurama with killer bee
- 00:46:15I think you did that in Safe Haven too
- 00:46:17that was that was that was it's one of
- 00:46:20my most circulated clips that was fire
- 00:46:22genuinely every single anime protagonist
- 00:46:24has a version of himself that he has to
- 00:46:26fight in order to get to the next level
- 00:46:28they did it and Naruto they did it in
- 00:46:30Bleach they did it in Shaman King they
- 00:46:32did it in Dragon Ball Z like it's a
- 00:46:35consistent theme of the anime
- 00:46:37protagonist to be self to do a
- 00:46:39self-examination or to go into some type
- 00:46:41of cocoon or some type of deep deep they
- 00:46:45didn't avatar The Last Airbender as well
- 00:46:46going through some type of deep
- 00:46:48self-exploration Journey in order to
- 00:46:50elicit a higher order or higher Divinity
- 00:46:53version of themselves so
- 00:46:57the scene in Naruto that was specific
- 00:46:59and very just like poignant for me is
- 00:47:01that
- 00:47:03when Naruto realized that he could not
- 00:47:06beat literally he could not beat
- 00:47:07physically beat this man ass
- 00:47:10he showed him everything that he had
- 00:47:13grown into to that point he had showed
- 00:47:15him how it is that he was going to be
- 00:47:17Hokage this is my intent this is what it
- 00:47:20is that I'm going to do I have it has
- 00:47:23been written right because it showed
- 00:47:25above Naruto's head the what the
- 00:47:28signature the autograph of him being the
- 00:47:30Hokage the other Naruto got so upset he
- 00:47:33was like what are you gonna do with me
- 00:47:35what about me it's abandonment right she
- 00:47:38just gonna discard me just like
- 00:47:40everybody else did so when the shadow
- 00:47:41Naruto went to like still on him again
- 00:47:44Naruto just hug him he was like no thank
- 00:47:46you for what it is that you've done to
- 00:47:47me or for me to get me to this point the
- 00:47:50anger that I had is valid it is there
- 00:47:52but I cannot have you exist in this form
- 00:47:55anymore we have to be collaborative
- 00:47:57right so that was the last part of the
- 00:48:00demon Fox that had to be dispelled in
- 00:48:02order for Naruto and Karama to become
- 00:48:04Naruto and Karama because after that
- 00:48:06Naruto was able to cloak himself in
- 00:48:09Karama because
- 00:48:10and it gets deeper so when Naruto went
- 00:48:13inside himself to learn about Karama
- 00:48:15Karama said you are the only vessel who
- 00:48:19has ever cared enough about me to learn
- 00:48:22my name most men do not care about
- 00:48:24themselves enough to understand their
- 00:48:27own power
- 00:48:28and to understand their own Divinity so
- 00:48:31they don't seek their own name they
- 00:48:34don't seek their own intent
- 00:48:36because they would have to go through
- 00:48:37that very large and angry masculine self
- 00:48:40that they know is going to continue to
- 00:48:42beat on them they have to face that
- 00:48:44internal bully that is usually
- 00:48:47either their father or the other men
- 00:48:49around them
- 00:48:51so essentially you gotta hug yourself
- 00:48:54dog
- 00:48:55um
- 00:48:56I've got a love on yourself dog
- 00:48:58when that very loud voice comes up hey I
- 00:49:01hear you but you gotta chill right now
- 00:49:04like I appreciate it you have helped me
- 00:49:07get to this point you have helped me
- 00:49:08develop this discipline this hustle but
- 00:49:10my boy you real loud right now and I
- 00:49:13don't like the way that you're talking
- 00:49:14to me because most times our internal
- 00:49:16narrative is disrespectful but that's
- 00:49:18the only man that we don't check
- 00:49:23yo say that again bro I said our
- 00:49:26internal narrative is usually wild
- 00:49:28disrespectful but that's the only man
- 00:49:29that we don't check we literally do not
- 00:49:31check ourselves
- 00:49:35yo
- 00:49:37you know it's so wild that I tell my
- 00:49:39girl all the time
- 00:49:41I say stop saying things to yourself
- 00:49:43that you wouldn't like for other people
- 00:49:44to say to you
- 00:49:49you know what I'm saying like we sit
- 00:49:51around and we bully ourselves yes sir
- 00:49:54like we bully ourselves did you ever
- 00:49:57catch yourself saying something that you
- 00:49:59wouldn't like somebody else saying to
- 00:50:01you you are bullying yourself you need
- 00:50:03to check yourself
- 00:50:04um
- 00:50:06like you really have to check yourself
- 00:50:07and a lot of us says man we have that
- 00:50:10hard
- 00:50:12very mean internal voice that was one of
- 00:50:16the main reasons why I stayed in
- 00:50:17depression for as long as I was
- 00:50:20because as soon as I start thinking
- 00:50:21about the mistakes that I made the first
- 00:50:24thing that comes up
- 00:50:26is you a [ __ ] up
- 00:50:29stupid ass [ __ ] why the [ __ ] you made
- 00:50:33that mistake right this is how I was
- 00:50:35talking to myself
- 00:50:37so when you're talking to yourself like
- 00:50:39that and you're already going through
- 00:50:40emotional distress
- 00:50:41what you think is gonna happen
- 00:50:44you're gonna be depressed because you
- 00:50:47don't give yourself enough Grace
- 00:50:49you don't affirm you don't validate
- 00:50:50yourself that's why it's so important
- 00:50:51that's why I put the affirmations up as
- 00:50:53much as I can because men need to see
- 00:50:56that
- 00:50:57they need to read that at first I would
- 00:50:59just do one sentence for the affirmation
- 00:51:00I just say black man
- 00:51:02speak more calmly to yourself let's just
- 00:51:04say that's the affirmation I just do one
- 00:51:06sentence and you know I started doing
- 00:51:07you started doing multiples no and the
- 00:51:09reason why is because they will read it
- 00:51:11multiple times but you and they need to
- 00:51:14read it multiple times for them to
- 00:51:16really get it I'm gonna I'm gonna [ __ ]
- 00:51:18you up real quick you know you probably
- 00:51:19got that from well you know we used to
- 00:51:21write lines in elementary school in
- 00:51:22order to get something in our minds yeah
- 00:51:27a black man because when I'm looking at
- 00:51:29I was like damn this [ __ ] remind me when
- 00:51:31I had to write the word discombobulated
- 00:51:32in fourth grade shout out Dr Tiffany
- 00:51:34Farrow but yeah she was like Mr Mr Mr
- 00:51:38Encore you are discombobulated
- 00:51:41d-i-s-c-o-m-b-o-b-u-l-a-t-e-d I know how
- 00:51:42to spell that that's my favorite
- 00:51:4314-letter word I know how to spell it to
- 00:51:45this day and it means to be in a state
- 00:51:47of disarray or a state of
- 00:51:48disorganization and you learned it right
- 00:51:50earned it because you had to repeatedly
- 00:51:52you had to repeatedly say it write it
- 00:51:54right and so that's why I make sure
- 00:51:58repeatedly write the affirmation out
- 00:52:00because men will read it multiple times
- 00:52:03and it will start to get ingrained and
- 00:52:06to drive this all home it's like yo
- 00:52:08healing is going to be so much more
- 00:52:11difficult
- 00:52:12so much harder
- 00:52:14when your internal voice their internal
- 00:52:17narrative that you have around yourself
- 00:52:18is negative and you you said you said yo
- 00:52:21that I think is such a bar we check
- 00:52:25everybody hey I'm gonna let this [ __ ]
- 00:52:27disrespect me I'm gonna [ __ ] him up
- 00:52:31but you getting [ __ ] up
- 00:52:33by yourself and you won't even say a
- 00:52:36word nope you won't say a word nothing
- 00:52:40you won't advocate for yourself
- 00:52:42but any other situation you ready to
- 00:52:45beat people up
- 00:52:47you ready to cause harm just anybody
- 00:52:49that's ready to disrespect you but you
- 00:52:51saying you disrespect yourself almost
- 00:52:54every day
- 00:52:55and you don't say anything to yourself I
- 00:52:57think that is I think that is yo check
- 00:53:00yourself before you wreck yourself
- 00:53:01that's literally what that means yo bro
- 00:53:04man I think that's so profound bro
- 00:53:07like for real like that's something that
- 00:53:09I'm really gonna take away from this
- 00:53:11because we we do that
- 00:53:14we do that too often we ready yo the
- 00:53:17conversations that I've had with man bro
- 00:53:19when it comes to disrespect bro we are
- 00:53:23we are ready bro ready like some men
- 00:53:27ready to die off disrespect but it's
- 00:53:30because it hurts that bad
- 00:53:32um
- 00:53:33because it hurts that bad because if you
- 00:53:36disrespect the man in the same way that
- 00:53:37he disrespects himself you're going to
- 00:53:39get a more violent reaction
- 00:53:41why is that because it's a trauma
- 00:53:43response
- 00:53:48it's trauma response
- 00:53:50you have negatively you have created a
- 00:53:53negative sympathetic vibration that
- 00:53:57creates a feedback loop that feeds into
- 00:54:00the internal narrative that I am not
- 00:54:02valuable so like Tupac said I already
- 00:54:04know I ain't [ __ ] but when I decide that
- 00:54:06you ain't [ __ ]
- 00:54:09um right so if I come to you and I
- 00:54:12remind you that you ain't [ __ ] you're
- 00:54:14either going to implode who are you are
- 00:54:16going to explode
- 00:54:20and you know what I'm connecting that
- 00:54:21back to bro
- 00:54:23I see a lot of conversation with men
- 00:54:25where they say
- 00:54:26I don't open it up because when last
- 00:54:29time I opened up it was used against me
- 00:54:30yeah they're scared
- 00:54:32that's what the word vulnerable means
- 00:54:34the word vulnerable means to open
- 00:54:35oneself up and I had I had two of my
- 00:54:38clients look this up preview uh last
- 00:54:39week actually the word vulnerable means
- 00:54:41to open one to open to open oneself up
- 00:54:45to the potential
- 00:54:47of harm or violence
- 00:54:50that is literally what vulnerability
- 00:54:51means right so it's not just about
- 00:54:54opening yourself up it's opening
- 00:54:56yourself up in a way where you have to
- 00:54:58trust that person to not harm you
- 00:55:00that is what builds Trust
- 00:55:02right but
- 00:55:04you building the trust in yourself
- 00:55:08is verbalizing when it is that you've
- 00:55:10been harmed and allowing people to show
- 00:55:12you whether or not they have the
- 00:55:14capacity to not harm you this is the
- 00:55:17reason why I tell black men all the time
- 00:55:18you have to empathize with yourself and
- 00:55:21evaluate yourself first before you start
- 00:55:23talking about what these black women are
- 00:55:24not doing but if you are a man who
- 00:55:27already does that self-evaluation or you
- 00:55:28are a man who already works on that
- 00:55:30emotional intelligence you are doing
- 00:55:32yourself a disservice if you decide to
- 00:55:35stay with a black woman or any woman who
- 00:55:38has internalized patriarchy so much so
- 00:55:39that they cannot humanize you as far as
- 00:55:42you have humanized yourself that is a
- 00:55:44disservice leave her
- 00:55:46facts
- 00:55:48leave her 2023.
- 00:55:51you know what I'm saying that's the
- 00:55:53campaign
- 00:55:54even leaving emotionally unintelligent
- 00:55:57women
- 00:55:58#leave these women that don't want you
- 00:56:02to be anything more than just protect
- 00:56:05and provide and make sure I'm good in
- 00:56:082023 we ain't doing that no more if I
- 00:56:11can't be a human around you I don't want
- 00:56:13to be around you shoot it on shorty
- 00:56:16baby bro but the part of part of the
- 00:56:19problem is a lot of men don't know what
- 00:56:21it means to be human they don't so we
- 00:56:23get into these relationships and when
- 00:56:25she's treating you just as a man
- 00:56:28right because there's more to being a
- 00:56:30man than just being a man there's more
- 00:56:32to Being Human Than Just being a man
- 00:56:33when she's treating you as just the last
- 00:56:36three letters
- 00:56:38you get you you think that's normal
- 00:56:40when y'all arguing she's slamming the
- 00:56:42door on your face and you arguing you
- 00:56:44mad she's leaving out the crib and
- 00:56:45that's because men have told themselves
- 00:56:47that women are the more emotional
- 00:56:48creatures therefore they'll sit and be
- 00:56:50emotionally abused by women who they
- 00:56:52perceive to be hysterical
- 00:56:56that's just her nature that's just her
- 00:56:58nature that's you going that's just her
- 00:57:00nature yourself into an emotionally
- 00:57:02abusive relationship how do I know
- 00:57:04because it happened to me
- 00:57:06happened to me too brother hey that's
- 00:57:08just our nature that's a bunch of
- 00:57:09[ __ ] if you as a woman do not know
- 00:57:12how to manage your emotional responses
- 00:57:14to you not getting your needs met you
- 00:57:16are emotionally abusive if you utilize
- 00:57:20the knowledge that men respond to
- 00:57:22women's fawning emotions in order to get
- 00:57:25what you want from men you are
- 00:57:26emotionally manipulative if a man comes
- 00:57:29to you and attempts to express to you
- 00:57:30how it is that he feels outside
- 00:57:32of when you all having a conflict
- 00:57:34because a lot of women they get real
- 00:57:35hold up about that okay if man comes to
- 00:57:38you and express it to you something
- 00:57:40that's bothering him
- 00:57:41and it already took him a whole bunch of
- 00:57:43time to do that and you lose your [ __ ]
- 00:57:45or you do emotional gymnastics in order
- 00:57:47to get back to how it is that you feel
- 00:57:49about this man bringing something to you
- 00:57:50that's emotional manipulation I don't
- 00:57:53want to hear nothing about it you can
- 00:57:54cut it slice it out of the days you want
- 00:57:56to dice it baby you being emotionally
- 00:57:58manipulative and you're being
- 00:57:59emotionally manipulative because Society
- 00:58:00has socialized you to do that in order
- 00:58:02to extract the non-emotion from men
- 00:58:03that's the reason why Bill hook said
- 00:58:05there are a number of women who don't
- 00:58:06actually want to be in the same equal
- 00:58:09space with men there are just a number
- 00:58:10of women who are upset that they they
- 00:58:12could not love sex Kajol or convincement
- 00:58:14to love them
- 00:58:17and that comes from that father wound
- 00:58:19bringing it all the way back
- 00:58:21because their mothers could not control
- 00:58:23cajole sex or comfort that father into
- 00:58:26staying or being emotionally present
- 00:58:29so what does that have to do with the
- 00:58:31father you are the only person who can
- 00:58:32heal the father one you
- 00:58:35because we are the only people who have
- 00:58:37the materials and the tools to be
- 00:58:39fathers
- 00:58:43we got it we gotta
- 00:58:45like I said brother
- 00:58:48I started going fast with you we was
- 00:58:50going back and forth for a little while
- 00:58:51right
- 00:59:00oh my God yeah now I said this was going
- 00:59:04to be a classic before we sat down but
- 00:59:05geez I ain't know it was gonna be this
- 00:59:07is a this is top five I've been learning
- 00:59:10G been learning because I've been doing
- 00:59:12my own work as it relates to my own
- 00:59:14father won't gang cause like me and my
- 00:59:16father right now and that's the reason
- 00:59:18why I know like I have to move more into
- 00:59:20spaces of compassion and like acceptance
- 00:59:22me and my father right now have not
- 00:59:24talked almost four years since my
- 00:59:25birthday bro you told me about that yeah
- 00:59:27and it was crazy that's good go ahead no
- 00:59:29no why is why because I mean when you
- 00:59:31first talked to me about it it was like
- 00:59:33three months yeah you're like yeah me
- 00:59:35and my pops haven't talked for like
- 00:59:36three months all right you know they're
- 00:59:37probably talking at some point that was
- 00:59:39a year it's yeah it'll be a year
- 00:59:40actually on my birthday wow yeah yeah
- 00:59:43yeah so you know through that through
- 00:59:46that period of time I've that has that
- 00:59:48has hurt me a lot like it has been a one
- 00:59:52the most difficult things that I've had
- 00:59:55to process over time because I don't
- 00:59:57think I told you like one of my other
- 00:59:58best friends her father died two weeks
- 01:00:00before that like he dropped it like we
- 01:00:02would not expect him to die at all damn
- 01:00:04right so we uh uh you know what I'm
- 01:00:07saying RRP DJ funkyo you feel me let's
- 01:00:09go let's go this pops for real for real
- 01:00:11but no
- 01:00:12um we were there at his funeral and I'm
- 01:00:15just bawling I'm bawling I'm bawling and
- 01:00:16I'm bawling because I'm like yo
- 01:00:19what if me and my father never
- 01:00:20reconciled all right so I go in and talk
- 01:00:22to my mother I said mom how do you
- 01:00:24prepare for a parent to die she says
- 01:00:25William you can't
- 01:00:27right I did not know that Spirit was
- 01:00:29going to lead me to have to grieve the
- 01:00:31father that I wanted in order to accept
- 01:00:32the father that I have
- 01:00:34and kills without his age
- 01:00:36extremely difficult process bro because
- 01:00:39as a 29 year old man I'm sitting I'm
- 01:00:41when I say balling bro like I'm balling
- 01:00:44like a child on my mother's shoulder I'm
- 01:00:46like yo why is he like this my mother's
- 01:00:49like William you are the only person in
- 01:00:50this family who has not accepted your
- 01:00:51father for who he is right
- 01:00:54it translated into my relationships
- 01:00:56because I began feeling more
- 01:01:01not necessarily fears of Abandonment but
- 01:01:03like I became more sensitive to feelings
- 01:01:05of invalidation to feelings of
- 01:01:07minimization to feelings of not being
- 01:01:09considered I started telling people like
- 01:01:11yo if you are if if you are not going to
- 01:01:14humanize validate or identify me you
- 01:01:16don't got too many times because the
- 01:01:17person who I had all of this space and
- 01:01:20Grace for now I've closed that door so
- 01:01:22now by Design the rest of y'all doors
- 01:01:24have been slam shut you need to trade
- 01:01:26carefully because at this point in time
- 01:01:28I'm in a space where I if I'm going to
- 01:01:29be accepting this that means that there
- 01:01:31are a number of things about me that are
- 01:01:32going to change which means that my
- 01:01:34boundaries are going to be less porous
- 01:01:36because now I understand that a lot of
- 01:01:38the ways that I was behaving was based
- 01:01:40upon a codependency or it was based upon
- 01:01:41me
- 01:01:42fearing that somebody was not going to
- 01:01:45see me as valuable or me fearing that
- 01:01:47somebody was not going to validate me
- 01:01:48once again
- 01:01:51why does it matter that you know this
- 01:01:54I'm going back and forth with this
- 01:01:55person because this person invalidated
- 01:01:57you right this person made me feel as if
- 01:01:59though what it is that I was saying was
- 01:02:01not real or it made me feel as if though
- 01:02:03you know oh your your reality or your
- 01:02:06personhood is not valuable enough for me
- 01:02:08to say you know what I can feel that
- 01:02:10right but as a person as a man
- 01:02:13I cannot expect everybody to once again
- 01:02:18identify with who it is I am or even
- 01:02:20verbalize or you know validate who it is
- 01:02:22that I am that's externalizing my
- 01:02:25self-concept my responsibility is to
- 01:02:28bring that back to myself and say okay
- 01:02:30be very honest about how it is that this
- 01:02:33hurt you identify that you don't want
- 01:02:35this from anybody else including your
- 01:02:37father so what does that mean that means
- 01:02:39that you have to accept that one this is
- 01:02:40who your father is two you also have to
- 01:02:43accept the pain that it caused you but
- 01:02:45also three you have to accept that it is
- 01:02:47not anybody else's responsibility but
- 01:02:49your own to soothe this pain because you
- 01:02:51are the only person who knows how deep
- 01:02:53that pain is
- 01:02:55because of the person who calls you this
- 01:02:57pain was going to heal the pain
- 01:02:59they would have healed it if they had
- 01:03:01the tools to do it they would have done
- 01:03:03it
- 01:03:05I'm no longer expecting somebody who
- 01:03:07does not have the capacity to have the
- 01:03:08tools to do this it would be great it
- 01:03:10would be fantastic the little boy in me
- 01:03:12is always going to want his father to
- 01:03:13come back right but at this point in
- 01:03:15time the man in me has to reparent the
- 01:03:17little boy and me and say hey this man
- 01:03:19may not be the man that you are
- 01:03:20expecting him to be he may not have the
- 01:03:22capacity but you do we do so move
- 01:03:26forward in the knowledge that you are
- 01:03:27going to be okay move forward in the
- 01:03:29knowledge that they're going to be other
- 01:03:30men or other masculine figures who are
- 01:03:34going to be able to teach you some of
- 01:03:35these things that you feel that you
- 01:03:36don't know right but the reality of the
- 01:03:39situation is
- 01:03:41this is what it means to be your own man
- 01:03:44this is what it means to make your own
- 01:03:45decisions this is what it means to be
- 01:03:48reborn or to rebirth yourself into your
- 01:03:50manhood
- 01:03:51it is taking the responsibility of
- 01:03:53cleaning up the mess even though you
- 01:03:55were not the one who made it uh
- 01:04:00bro
- 01:04:01ain't gonna lie you got me emotional bro
- 01:04:03it get real deep in the African
- 01:04:05communities too yo bro
- 01:04:07I'm grateful because my relationship
- 01:04:10with my pops is not like that
- 01:04:12right
- 01:04:13um
- 01:04:14but I always feel for you when you when
- 01:04:16we have this conversation
- 01:04:18because it's like damn bro and I feel
- 01:04:20for every man because I know bro first
- 01:04:22of all
- 01:04:23before we even I even get to get into
- 01:04:25the response I want to uh salute you for
- 01:04:29just speaking on that so candidly
- 01:04:31because it's important that we talk
- 01:04:33about this openly right right and that
- 01:04:35people know that you're not just up here
- 01:04:37talking and giving wisdom and gain but
- 01:04:39you're actually you've actually gone
- 01:04:41through it and gone you're going through
- 01:04:43the process right now so not only are
- 01:04:45you expect or not only are you educated
- 01:04:47in it but you're also experienced in it
- 01:04:50that makes you like a two-headed monster
- 01:04:51when it comes to this because you can
- 01:04:53speak to it from an education standpoint
- 01:04:54but you can also connect to the feelings
- 01:04:56of it because you're going through it
- 01:04:57right so I applaud you for talking about
- 01:04:59that bro because so many men bro I'm
- 01:05:01telling you I know when I dropped this
- 01:05:03episode there's gonna be a lot of men
- 01:05:05that relate to exactly what you just
- 01:05:06said like they're gonna hear everything
- 01:05:08you said before this where they actually
- 01:05:09listened to the whole episode I think
- 01:05:11that part right there will hit the most
- 01:05:14because there's so many men that are
- 01:05:16going through the process where they
- 01:05:18have to do that radical acceptance of
- 01:05:20their father yes
- 01:05:22you know what I'm saying
- 01:05:23it's the radical acceptance of this man
- 01:05:27may not be who I have called him to be
- 01:05:30or who I think he is or who I would like
- 01:05:33him to be
- 01:05:34and I have to accept him for who he is
- 01:05:36so that I'm able to move into the man
- 01:05:38that I want to be not only for myself
- 01:05:41but for the people around me
- 01:05:43bruh
- 01:05:45wish we had more time yeah but you know
- 01:05:48I gotta get back to lately yes yes sir
- 01:05:51listen please
- 01:05:52tell people what you have how they can
- 01:05:55support you how they can get connected
- 01:05:56with you outside of Safe Haven
- 01:05:58um please please please yeah yeah so
- 01:06:00once again my name is Professor Odie um
- 01:06:02I have two virtual classrooms my first
- 01:06:04virtual classroom is my love classroom
- 01:06:07um love stands for Life understanding
- 01:06:08value and it is a classroom where it is
- 01:06:10that we focus on black self-development
- 01:06:12black spirituality and black sensuality
- 01:06:14all from an indigenous Afrocentric um
- 01:06:17philosophy and perspective and the
- 01:06:19reason why we do this is because a
- 01:06:21number of people especially a number of
- 01:06:22black people are saying that the
- 01:06:24materials that are available to them as
- 01:06:25it relates to self-development as it
- 01:06:27relates to Spiritual Development as it
- 01:06:28relates to mental health development are
- 01:06:30not black enough being very honest right
- 01:06:32they are not centered in our experience
- 01:06:34so the love classroom specifically
- 01:06:37centers all of those things once again
- 01:06:38black development black spirituality
- 01:06:40black sexuality and and Indigenous
- 01:06:43african-centered
- 01:06:44um
- 01:06:45philosophical context and we do that in
- 01:06:48order for you to basically be your black
- 01:06:51is healthy yourself right so you can
- 01:06:53access the love classroom um on my
- 01:06:55Instagram you can just send me a DM
- 01:06:57saying love in my AI bot to get right
- 01:06:59with you
- 01:07:00um the platform uh is hosted on hotmark
- 01:07:02so it is a course and also a live book
- 01:07:05club so every uh every week
- 01:07:08um Mondays we have classroom discussions
- 01:07:10and Wednesdays we have book club
- 01:07:11discussions um so once again that is the
- 01:07:14love classroom and the love classroom
- 01:07:15very much so in a short form context is
- 01:07:18it is a space where you can become your
- 01:07:21biggest blackest healthiest self in
- 01:07:23order for you to experience Blackness at
- 01:07:26its most deepest
- 01:07:28um intentional levels so that is what we
- 01:07:30do in the love classroom
- 01:07:31um the wealth classroom is a bit
- 01:07:33different so the wealth classroom uh
- 01:07:35teaches emotional regulation in order to
- 01:07:37increase your financial decision making
- 01:07:39skills and the wealth classroom is a
- 01:07:41joint effort between myself
- 01:07:43um my brother Jace banks at Bahama FX
- 01:07:45top two Trader we got a couple of other
- 01:07:47sponsors that are coming in really like
- 01:07:49make sure that the classroom is
- 01:07:50bolstered up but in the classroom it is
- 01:07:52a eight week um it is an eight-week
- 01:07:54process where we take you literally from
- 01:07:56not knowing anything about financial
- 01:07:58psychology to at the end of the at the
- 01:08:00end of the course not only do you know
- 01:08:02what Financial psychology is you know
- 01:08:04how it impacts your uh you know how it
- 01:08:06impacts your purchasing decisions you
- 01:08:08understand how it is that marketing
- 01:08:10impacts your literally your brain and
- 01:08:12how it is that they hijack your brain to
- 01:08:14make financial decisions you learn how
- 01:08:15to combat that you learn how to hack the
- 01:08:17habits around emotional regulation and
- 01:08:19how it relates to you know purchasing
- 01:08:21decisions
- 01:08:22all those types of things so once again
- 01:08:24if you want to find either one of these
- 01:08:25classrooms you can come on to my
- 01:08:27Instagram send me a message of either
- 01:08:29love Luv and all capitals or wealth w l
- 01:08:33t h in all capitals and like I said my
- 01:08:35AI body get right with you and how can
- 01:08:37they find you and connect with you so
- 01:08:39how can they find me uh my platform is
- 01:08:42on Instagram and Tick Tock those are my
- 01:08:44actually now Instagram Tick Tock and
- 01:08:46YouTube
