The video introduces a jazz piano lesson aimed at providing a structured practice plan to help learners improve their jazz piano skills. The lesson highlights the importance of focusing on five pillars: scales, chords, voicings, lead sheets, and improvisation. The presenter promises that following this plan will yield significant improvements over a year.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
The first pillar discussed is learning scales, which form the basis of jazz harmonic language. Beginners should focus on major and minor scales, practicing these in a specific way that includes chords and rhythms important in jazz. The video emphasizes practicing in one key per month to eventually cover all keys in a year.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
For intermediate players, scales should expand to modes, such as Dorian and Mixolydian. Major scales are altered slightly to create different modes, useful for soloing over specific chords. Practicing these modes also follows the one-key-per-month approach, ensuring the mastery of these scales in all keys within a year.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
Advanced players should focus on altered scales like the whole tone, dominant diminished, and fully altered scales, essential for creating sophisticated jazz solos. Practicing these scales involves resolving to a major chord, aiming for a specific tempo and moving through all keys over the course of a year.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
The second pillar is mastering basic jazz chords. Beginners start with major and minor chords and their inversions, practicing these over a year in each key. Intermediate players focus on seventh chords, which are prevalent in jazz. Advanced players delve into chord extensions and alterations, adding complexity to basic chords.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
Chord exercises include inversions and the circle of fifths for seventh chords. Advanced exercises involve understanding and applying chord extensions and alterations to create richer sounds. Practicing these daily will help build familiarity and proficiency in all keys throughout the year.
- 00:30:00 - 00:35:00
The third pillar is mastering chords, focusing on practical application. Beginners often start with chord shells, simplifying jazz chords by omitting certain notes. Exercises include playing these in various keys and using them to understand the fundamentals of jazz harmony over the year.
- 00:35:00 - 00:40:00
Intermediate pianists move to rootless voicings, which sound more contemporary and add complexity to accompaniment. Advanced players apply these concepts in practical settings, aim to use quartal voicings, building chords in fourths rather than the usual thirds for a more modern jazz sound.
- 00:40:00 - 00:45:00
Pillar four concerns lead sheets, turning them into polished performances. Beginners use chord shells to play jazz standards, easily adapting tunes. Intermediate and advanced players add complexity by using rootless voicings and walking bass lines, transforming simple lead sheets into full jazz arrangements.
- 00:45:00 - 00:50:00
The final pillar focuses on improvisation skills. Beginners start with major scales to create simple, effective solos by targeting chord tones in short phrases. The exercise emphasizes developing a sense of melody and timing. Intermediate players introduce neighbor tones, while advanced players use multiple scales for variety.
- 00:50:00 - 00:59:45
Advanced improvisation involves using different scales for varying chord progressions, enhancing solos with diverse colors. Exercises train musicians to switch scales fluidly, aiming to explore jazz standards deeply through improvisation and complete skill development over a one-year practice routine.

- 00:01:31one is scales and whether you want to
- 00:01:33play the
- 00:01:34[Music]
- 00:01:36blues okay or more traditional
- 00:01:41Jazz okay it all starts with learning
- 00:01:44scales because scales are what give you
- 00:01:46the harmonic language of jazz tunes so
- 00:01:50all of the chords and jazz tunes and all
- 00:01:52the melodies come from these parent
- 00:01:55scales and so if you learn the scales
- 00:01:58you're going to have a much easier time
- 00:01:59playing jazz by the way if you're
- 00:02:01enjoying this video please hit the like
- 00:02:03button and if you're new to the channel
- 00:02:04be sure to subscribe for more videos
- 00:02:06just like this so if you're a beginner
- 00:02:08pianist what should you practice when it
- 00:02:10comes to scales well the most important
- 00:02:12scale for you to learn is your major and
- 00:02:15minor scales and you might already know
- 00:02:17your major scale in the key of C it's
- 00:02:20all white notes but if you have a
- 00:02:23teacher that's told you to practice
- 00:02:25it like this this is not what I
- 00:02:28recommend there's actually a much better
- 00:02:30exercise to practicing your major and
- 00:02:32minor scales that will help you become a
- 00:02:34jazz pianist by the way I wanted to
- 00:02:36mention that the lesson sheet music is
- 00:02:39downloadable and printable you can also
- 00:02:41change the key of this entire lesson
- 00:02:43with the click of one button with our
- 00:02:45smart sheet music so I'll put a link to
- 00:02:48that below here's how the exercise goes
- 00:02:50it actually sounds really
- 00:02:51[Music]
- 00:02:58cool
- 00:03:03this is an amazing exercise because
- 00:03:05you're not only learning the notes of
- 00:03:07the scale and building your Technique
- 00:03:09but you're also learning all of the
- 00:03:11chords that come from the scale you're
- 00:03:14learning how to swing your right hand
- 00:03:17which is really important in jazz and
- 00:03:19you're practicing one of the most
- 00:03:21important rhythms in jazz called the
- 00:03:22charlon so for the exercise you're
- 00:03:25basically coming up the C
- 00:03:27scale and then you're going to the next
- 00:03:29next chord the D minor on the
- 00:03:32F and then you're going to come down on
- 00:03:35the E
- 00:03:36minor and then on the F you're going to
- 00:03:38go to an F chord does that make sense
- 00:03:41and then you're going to do a little
- 00:03:41crossover B and then you're going to
- 00:03:44play the same exercise but continue your
- 00:03:46chords in the left hand so
- 00:03:49g a right and then
- 00:03:54B and then on the F you go to your c
- 00:03:57chord then you play the same thing but
- 00:04:00this time you're going to go down with
- 00:04:02your chords so we
- 00:04:04have
- 00:04:06B and then
- 00:04:09a g you see that here's a little
- 00:04:13crossover to the
- 00:04:15F here's the E
- 00:04:18chord okay and then the D
- 00:04:21chord and the C with the
- 00:04:24F in addition to your major scale you
- 00:04:27also want to make sure you can play your
- 00:04:30minor scale because in jazz you use a
- 00:04:33lot of minor scales when you're
- 00:04:40soloing okay it's a very important scale
- 00:04:42to learn so your minor scale is actually
- 00:04:44very simple you start with the major
- 00:04:47scale you lower the third note you lower
- 00:04:50the sixth note and you lower the seventh
- 00:04:53note and you have what's called a c
- 00:04:55natural minor scale but again I don't
- 00:04:58recommend that you practice it it like
- 00:05:00this because you're just working on your
- 00:05:02Technique instead it's much better to
- 00:05:05play this
- 00:05:06[Music]
- 00:05:17exercise and once again with this
- 00:05:19exercise you're not only mastering your
- 00:05:21minor scale the fingering and your
- 00:05:24Technique but you're also learning all
- 00:05:26of the chords that come from your your
- 00:05:29natural minor scale and this is very
- 00:05:32important if you want to play jazz
- 00:05:34because remember the chords in jazz come
- 00:05:36from your scales now when it comes to
- 00:05:39practicing your major and minor scales I
- 00:05:41recommend that you focus on one key each
- 00:05:44month so for the first month you'll
- 00:05:46focus on the c major and the C minor
- 00:05:49scales I recommend 5 to 10 minutes of
- 00:05:52practice each day and your goal Tempo is
- 00:05:5580 beats per minute now once you've
- 00:05:58reached your goal tempo Tempo and you've
- 00:06:00practiced for the month then in your
- 00:06:02next month I recommend that you focus on
- 00:06:04a new key so you can try a key like f
- 00:06:08and practice your major
- 00:06:10scale right and then your minor
- 00:06:15scale until you reach your goal of 80
- 00:06:18beats per minute and if you do one key
- 00:06:21each month then by the end of the year
- 00:06:23you will have covered all 12 of your
- 00:06:25major and minor scales by the way if you
- 00:06:27want to do a deep dive on your major
- 00:06:29scales and you want to learn them in all
- 00:06:3212 keys with the best fingering and
- 00:06:34exercises to master your scales plus all
- 00:06:38of the chords that come from your scales
- 00:06:40and how to use them in Tunes check out
- 00:06:42our beginner foundations learning track
- 00:06:45in this learning track you learn
- 00:06:47everything that you need to know about
- 00:06:49your major skills and mastering them
- 00:06:52playing them in different keys and
- 00:06:54playing really fun tunes that use these
- 00:06:56skills you'll also learn about ear
- 00:06:58training and hand coordination so I'll
- 00:07:01put a link to this learning track below
- 00:07:03all right if you are an intermediate
- 00:07:04level pianist and you want to play jazz
- 00:07:06with confidence then you need to
- 00:07:08practice your scales but I'm assuming
- 00:07:10that you already know your major and
- 00:07:12your minor scales if you don't then you
- 00:07:14definitely want to do the beginner
- 00:07:16exercise so if you're on the
- 00:07:17intermediate side the best scales for
- 00:07:19you to practice are your modes and your
- 00:07:23modes are the scales that you use on
- 00:07:25particular types of chords like if you
- 00:07:27have a C Minor 7 chord you can use a
- 00:07:30scale called your Dorian
- 00:07:36scale okay or if you have a chord like a
- 00:07:38C7 you can use your C mixian
- 00:07:45scale this is why the modes are
- 00:07:47important because you can take different
- 00:07:49chords and use different modes to solo
- 00:07:51over them so quick review on your modes
- 00:07:54if you play a C major scale starting on
- 00:07:56C we call this C ionian and then then if
- 00:07:59you play the same scale starting on D we
- 00:08:01call this D Dorian and e frian and f
- 00:08:05lydian and g melidian and a aolon and
- 00:08:10finally B locan now this is a great way
- 00:08:13to get started learning your modes but a
- 00:08:15better way of understanding your modes
- 00:08:17is by which notes you alter of your
- 00:08:20major scale so if you play your C major
- 00:08:23scale and you lower the seventh you have
- 00:08:25your C mixian scale and if you lower the
- 00:08:28Third third now you have the C Dorian
- 00:08:31scale and we have C aolan and then we
- 00:08:35have C Fran and then you have C locen
- 00:08:40and then finally if you take your C
- 00:08:42major scale and you just raise the four
- 00:08:44you have what's called C lydian and so
- 00:08:47you want to practice each of these seven
- 00:08:49modes if you want to be comfortable
- 00:08:51soloing in jazz so I'll play the
- 00:08:53exercise for you and then break it
- 00:08:58down
- 00:09:07so we're going to come up the scale C
- 00:09:11ionian notice we have a C major 7 in our
- 00:09:14left hand to match the scale then we're
- 00:09:17going to add one flat coming down for C
- 00:09:20mixian here's the B flat okay we'll do a
- 00:09:24little connector here on the B flat now
- 00:09:26we're going to add another flat our E
- 00:09:28flat
- 00:09:29making it C
- 00:09:32Dorian notice we use a C Minor 7 in our
- 00:09:35left hand and we're going to add another
- 00:09:37flat making this C
- 00:09:41aolan okay now we're going to add
- 00:09:43another flat the d flat making the C
- 00:09:49Fran and then we're going to go locen
- 00:09:52coming down with the G flat and we're
- 00:09:54going to match the chord
- 00:09:57here okay and finally we're going to end
- 00:10:00with c
- 00:10:02lydian with that F sharp and we finish
- 00:10:06coming down this is a great exercise
- 00:10:09because it makes you really understand
- 00:10:11your modes for each key and also
- 00:10:14switching between your modes very
- 00:10:16quickly which is something that jazz
- 00:10:17musicians do when they're soloing now I
- 00:10:20recommend that you practice this
- 00:10:21exercise for one month focusing on the
- 00:10:25key of C major I recommend that you play
- 00:10:27this for 5 to 10 minutes per day and I
- 00:10:30want you to reach a goal tempo of 100
- 00:10:33BPM once you've done all of this then in
- 00:10:36the next month I recommend that you
- 00:10:38focus on a new key so you can go to the
- 00:10:40key of G major and then practice all of
- 00:10:43your seven modes using the same exercise
- 00:10:46this way by the end of 12 months you
- 00:10:48will have mastered all of your seven
- 00:10:51modes for all 12 keys by the way if you
- 00:10:54want to do a deep dive on mastering your
- 00:10:56musical modes we have some really good
- 00:10:59courses on each of the most common
- 00:11:01musical modes including your Dorian mode
- 00:11:04your aolan mode mixian lyan modes so
- 00:11:08I'll put a link to those courses below
- 00:11:10all right if you're an advanced pianist
- 00:11:12and you want to master your scales to
- 00:11:14play jazz some of the best scales to use
- 00:11:16are what are called altered scales and
- 00:11:19when you listen to a jazz pianist you
- 00:11:21might hear them play a phrase like
- 00:11:27this what are those cool scales that I'm
- 00:11:30playing well they're called altered
- 00:11:32scales and there are three altered
- 00:11:34scales that you really need to know if
- 00:11:36you're an advanced jazz pianist and they
- 00:11:38are the whole tone scale which is
- 00:11:41basically all whole steps the dominant
- 00:11:44diminished scale which is a halfstep
- 00:11:48whole step scale it's kind of a strange
- 00:11:51looking scale and then finally your
- 00:11:53altered scale which is a lot like your
- 00:11:56dominant diminished scale except we're
- 00:11:59going to put an A flat in there on the
- 00:12:01top and these scales sound amazing when
- 00:12:04you use them to improvise over a
- 00:12:06dominant seven chord for example I can
- 00:12:08take each one of these scales and play
- 00:12:10them over C7 and it'll sound really cool
- 00:12:13like here's the whole tone
- 00:12:19scale here's the dominant diminish
- 00:12:26scale and here's the fully altered scale
- 00:12:29[Music]
- 00:12:34so here's the exercise that I recommend
- 00:12:36you practice to master these scales I'll
- 00:12:38play it for you and then break it
- 00:12:47down so what I'm doing is I'm playing
- 00:12:50each one of these altered scales coming
- 00:12:52up on the C7 chord and then I'm
- 00:12:54resolving to an F major chord using the
- 00:12:57F major scale so for the first one we
- 00:13:00use C
- 00:13:02altered that's that whole tone scale I'm
- 00:13:05going to come down and then end with a
- 00:13:07little line on
- 00:13:10F okay and then we do the same thing
- 00:13:13this time using dominant
- 00:13:16diminished slightly different and then
- 00:13:19end with the same line on the F okay and
- 00:13:22then finally we're going to use the C
- 00:13:24fully altered
- 00:13:27scale slightly different and then end
- 00:13:30with the same
- 00:13:32line now I recommend that you practice
- 00:13:35this for one month in one key so
- 00:13:37practice on all of your C altered scales
- 00:13:41I do encourage you to practice this for
- 00:13:42maybe 5 to 10 minutes per day and a goal
- 00:13:45Tempo is 110 BPM so once you've hit that
- 00:13:50goal Tempo you've practiced it for 1
- 00:13:52month then in the next month pick a new
- 00:13:55key so you might go to a different key
- 00:13:57maybe the key of B flat okay well what's
- 00:13:59the five chord and B flat it's an F7 so
- 00:14:03you practice your faltered skilles
- 00:14:05resolving to B flat by the way if you
- 00:14:07want to learn all of the scales that I
- 00:14:09like to use when I'm soloing over
- 00:14:11different types of chords we have a
- 00:14:14really great course on this topic called
- 00:14:16scales for improv on Seventh chords I'll
- 00:14:19put a link to that below all right
- 00:14:21pillar two to playing jazz piano is to
- 00:14:23master your chords and if you're a
- 00:14:25beginner pianist and you want to play
- 00:14:27cool Jazzy chord like this well guess
- 00:14:30what all of the chords that we
- 00:14:32use okay in jazz they come from major
- 00:14:36and minor chords and if you can't play
- 00:14:38your major and minor chords then you
- 00:14:40won't be able to play some of these
- 00:14:42other jazzier sounding chords now your
- 00:14:45yearly goal is to be able to play all 12
- 00:14:47of your major chords minor chords and
- 00:14:50chord inversions and if you listen to
- 00:14:53most teachers they'll say okay here's a
- 00:14:55C major chord and then you have these
- 00:14:58inversions so this is called first
- 00:15:00inversion and then this is called second
- 00:15:03inversion and then if you play minor
- 00:15:05chords you have C minor root position
- 00:15:08and then you have first inversion and
- 00:15:10then second inversion and this is a
- 00:15:12great way to get started with inversions
- 00:15:14but I don't think it's the best way to
- 00:15:16practice them if you want to play jazz
- 00:15:18it's much better to practice them like
- 00:15:25this okay doesn't it sound so much more
- 00:15:28interesting and you're not only learning
- 00:15:30your inversions but you're swinging the
- 00:15:33notes in your right hand and you're
- 00:15:35playing them over different chords in
- 00:15:37your left hand so it sounds a lot better
- 00:15:39so basically what I'm doing is I'm just
- 00:15:41playing each
- 00:15:43inversion I'm playing a little
- 00:15:44Charleston rhythm in the left hand and
- 00:15:47then I go to the next
- 00:15:49inversion Charleston Rhythm and I finish
- 00:15:52okay and then I play the same thing
- 00:15:54coming
- 00:15:57down
- 00:16:00you see that and then you can do the
- 00:16:01same thing for
- 00:16:08minor okay same Rhythm one and two and
- 00:16:12three and four
- 00:16:16and and then you bring it
- 00:16:19down
- 00:16:20right same
- 00:16:24thing so I recommend that you focus on
- 00:16:27one key for one month so in month number
- 00:16:30one focus on the key of C major I
- 00:16:33recommend that you practice this 5 to 10
- 00:16:35minutes per day and you really want to
- 00:16:37hit a goal tempo of 90 beats per minute
- 00:16:40once you've practiced this for 1 month
- 00:16:42and you've hit your goal Tempo then in
- 00:16:44the next month you can try a new key so
- 00:16:47you can jump to the key of D and
- 00:16:49practice the same thing and after you do
- 00:16:51this for 12 months you will have learned
- 00:16:54all of your major and minor chords in
- 00:16:57all inversions in all 12 Keys all right
- 00:16:59if you're an intermediate level pianist
- 00:17:01and you want to master your chords to
- 00:17:03play jazz the most important chords in
- 00:17:07jazz and I mean like 99% of jazz tunes
- 00:17:11use a chord type called seventh chords
- 00:17:14and it really doesn't matter the tune if
- 00:17:15you're
- 00:17:16doing you know Fly Me to the
- 00:17:20Moon the way you look tonight if you
- 00:17:23look at the lead sheets and you look at
- 00:17:24the chords you're going to see all of
- 00:17:26these seventh chords and so if you want
- 00:17:28to play jazz you really need to
- 00:17:30understand seventh chords now there are
- 00:17:32five types of seventh chords that you're
- 00:17:34going to see 99% of the time you have
- 00:17:37what's called a C major 7 you have a c
- 00:17:41dominant 7 you have a C Minor 7 you have
- 00:17:46a c half diminished 7 and you have a c
- 00:17:50diminished 7 and there's a really good
- 00:17:52exercise that will help you master each
- 00:17:54of these seventh Chords it's called the
- 00:17:56inverted seventh exercise and it sounds
- 00:17:59like
- 00:18:07this basically I'm starting on a C major
- 00:18:107 chord and I'm going down in fifths so
- 00:18:13I'm going to go to C to F and play an F
- 00:18:16major 7 you see that and this is an
- 00:18:19inverted F major 7 and then down from F
- 00:18:21A fifth to B flat play B flat major 7
- 00:18:25and then B flat to E flat I play an E
- 00:18:29flat major 7 and you continue this cycle
- 00:18:32so next is a flat major 7 to a d flat
- 00:18:35major 7 g flat major 7 B major 7 you're
- 00:18:39basically going around your circle of
- 00:18:41fifths is your a major 7 D major 7
- 00:18:45finally down to G major 7 now I
- 00:18:47recommend that you practice this for 5
- 00:18:49to 10 minutes per day and you set a goal
- 00:18:52tempo of 100 BPM and each month I
- 00:18:56recommend that you focus on one type of
- 00:18:58chord so in the first month you're going
- 00:19:00to do your major seven chords and then
- 00:19:03in the next month you can do your
- 00:19:05dominant seven chords does that make
- 00:19:08sense and then in the next month you
- 00:19:10could do your minor seven chords so this
- 00:19:12is going to take you five months to
- 00:19:14master now in months 6 through 11
- 00:19:16there's another really good exercise
- 00:19:18that you can practice to master your
- 00:19:20seventh chords and it goes like
- 00:19:27this
- 00:19:34for this exercise I'm practicing all my
- 00:19:36seventh chords but I'm playing all of
- 00:19:39the dionic seventh chords that belong to
- 00:19:42a key and so this is another way to
- 00:19:45practice each of your seventh chords is
- 00:19:47to mix them up so we have C major 7 D
- 00:19:50Minor 7 E minor7 F major 7 and so you
- 00:19:54can practice these all the way up the
- 00:19:56scale and then the other thing that I do
- 00:19:58is is I break the right hand up in
- 00:19:59triplets triple it triple it triple it
- 00:20:03triple it triple it you see what I'm
- 00:20:05doing okay and then I also do a
- 00:20:08Charleston rhythm in my left hand 1 2 3
- 00:20:124 1 2 3 4 now I recommend that you
- 00:20:18practice this for 5 to 10 minutes per
- 00:20:20day with a goal tempo of 150 bpm now if
- 00:20:25you practice two keys per month then
- 00:20:28after 6 months you will have practiced
- 00:20:31all 12 of your dionic 7th chords in all
- 00:20:34of your keys once you've practiced this
- 00:20:36exercise then you'll have one more month
- 00:20:38where you can review both of your
- 00:20:40exercises by the way if you want to do a
- 00:20:42deep dive on Seventh chords and really
- 00:20:45Master them check out our level four
- 00:20:47foundations learning track in this
- 00:20:49learning track we have fulllength
- 00:20:51courses where you'll learn how to master
- 00:20:54each type of seventh chords you'll learn
- 00:20:56essential exercise
- 00:20:58how to apply them to Tunes we have a
- 00:21:01really great lead sheet course where you
- 00:21:03learn how to use seventh chords on lead
- 00:21:04sheets lots of exercises over the 251
- 00:21:08chord progression plus you can learn how
- 00:21:10to start identifying seventh chords by
- 00:21:13ear with our ear training courses so
- 00:21:16I'll put a link to that learning track
- 00:21:17below all right if you're an advanced
- 00:21:19pianist and you want to play Beautiful
- 00:21:21Jazz chords like
- 00:21:27this
- 00:21:30then you must understand chord
- 00:21:32extensions and chord alterations
- 00:21:34extensions and alterations are basically
- 00:21:36the notes that you can add to simple
- 00:21:38chords like this to make them sound like
- 00:21:41that and there are some simple rules to
- 00:21:44extensions and alterations that will
- 00:21:46make them much easier to understand
- 00:21:48basically if you have a major seven
- 00:21:50chord or a minor seven chord you can add
- 00:21:55three different extensions to these
- 00:21:57chords the D the F and the a we call
- 00:22:01these the 9 the 11 and the 13 now if you
- 00:22:04have a dominant seven chord like a C7
- 00:22:08there are four alterations that you can
- 00:22:10add to this chord which are called the
- 00:22:12flat nine the sharp n the sharp 11 and
- 00:22:16the flat 13 now as a quick side note on
- 00:22:19Major seven chords typically you won't
- 00:22:21add the 11 in and on minor seven chords
- 00:22:25you typically will not add the 13 so
- 00:22:28what you want to do is you want to
- 00:22:29practice playing chord progressions
- 00:22:32using extensions and alterations and so
- 00:22:35here's the exercise that I love to use
- 00:22:37with my students I'll play it for you
- 00:22:38and then break it
- 00:22:51down I'm basically playing a two five 1
- 00:22:56chord progression in the the key of f
- 00:22:59but instead of playing ordinary seventh
- 00:23:01chords like this I'm going to add every
- 00:23:03possible chord extension to each of
- 00:23:06these chords so for the first
- 00:23:09one that G minor 7 I'm adding the ninth
- 00:23:13and the 11th then on the C7 I'm adding
- 00:23:17some chord
- 00:23:18alterations okay these are basically all
- 00:23:21of the alter notes I could add on a C7
- 00:23:24chord and then I resolve to my F chord
- 00:23:27but again I'm adding all of the possible
- 00:23:29chord extensions so I have the 13 here
- 00:23:33and then I have the nine then I'm going
- 00:23:34to shift the same thing up so instead of
- 00:23:37starting on the C I'm going to start on
- 00:23:39the F and do the same thing so we have G
- 00:23:43minor 11 and then C7 there are my alter
- 00:23:48notes alter notes and I resolve once
- 00:23:51again to my F chord so I'm playing the
- 00:23:53same chords I'm just moving it up to
- 00:23:56explore different inversions of these
- 00:23:57chord chords and then finally you can
- 00:23:59bring it up again okay G minor 11 here
- 00:24:04C7 there are my alter notes and I end on
- 00:24:08my F major 13 just like with the other
- 00:24:10exercises I recommend that you focus on
- 00:24:13one key per month you can practice this
- 00:24:16for 5 to 10 minutes per day and I
- 00:24:18recommend that you set a goal tempo of
- 00:24:2175 BPM once you've hit your goal Tempo
- 00:24:24and you've practiced it for a month then
- 00:24:26in the next month pick pick a new key so
- 00:24:29you might go to the key of E flat and
- 00:24:31practice your 251 in E Flat and by the
- 00:24:35end of 12 months you will have practiced
- 00:24:37adding your chord extensions and
- 00:24:39alterations to all 12 of your keys using
- 00:24:42the most common Jazz progression which
- 00:24:44is your 251 by the way if you want to do
- 00:24:47a deep dive on chord extensions and
- 00:24:49chord alterations then I recommend that
- 00:24:51you check out our level five foundations
- 00:24:54learning track in this learning track
- 00:24:56you'll learn all about extend extensions
- 00:24:58and alterations and specifically how to
- 00:25:01apply them to basically every type of
- 00:25:03chord you'll learn how to combine notes
- 00:25:06the best voicings how to use them in
- 00:25:08chord progressions in lead sheets you'll
- 00:25:11also learn about hand coordination plus
- 00:25:14how to add passing chords and
- 00:25:17reharmonize basically any chord
- 00:25:19progression so I'll put a link to that
- 00:25:21learning track below all right pillar
- 00:25:22three of playing jazz piano is mastering
- 00:25:25your chords and if you're a beginner
- 00:25:27jazz pianist you might be thinking you
- 00:25:29know Johnny I don't think I can learn
- 00:25:31jazz chords there is way too much going
- 00:25:34on but you might not know that you can
- 00:25:36actually get started playing jazz chords
- 00:25:38by using some very simple chords called
- 00:25:41chord shells and they're super easy to
- 00:25:44play so a chord shell is basically when
- 00:25:47you take a jazz chord like a major
- 00:25:497eventh chord and you remove one or two
- 00:25:53notes from the chord usually you remove
- 00:25:55the fifth from the chord the G and you
- 00:25:57end up with this partial chord or a
- 00:26:00chord shell now there are two ways to
- 00:26:02play chord shells one is to play the
- 00:26:05root and the third on the bottom and the
- 00:26:07right hand plays the seventh okay this
- 00:26:09is called a closed position chord shell
- 00:26:12because it's contained within an octave
- 00:26:15the other way to play a chord shell is
- 00:26:17to play the root with your left hand and
- 00:26:19play the seventh and the third with your
- 00:26:21right hand you get this beautiful chord
- 00:26:24this is called an open chord shell
- 00:26:27because the outer notes are further than
- 00:26:30one octave apart and so you can do this
- 00:26:32on each type of chord like on a C7 chord
- 00:26:36you could play your chord shell using a
- 00:26:38closed position chord or an open
- 00:26:40position chord or a C Minor 7 okay same
- 00:26:44thing you can play a closed position
- 00:26:46chord like this or an open position
- 00:26:49chord so there's a really good exercise
- 00:26:51to help you master your chord shells and
- 00:26:53it goes like
- 00:26:56this
- 00:27:00I'm basically playing a 251 chord
- 00:27:03progression in the key of C major so I'm
- 00:27:06starting on a two chord then going into
- 00:27:08a five chord and then a one chord and
- 00:27:11I'm using these seventh chords that we
- 00:27:14often times play in jazz but instead of
- 00:27:17playing these ordinary chords I'm
- 00:27:19playing them as chord shells so for the
- 00:27:21first chord I'm playing my D Minor 7
- 00:27:24chord shell then for the G chord check
- 00:27:26it out
- 00:27:28I play it like this this is that open
- 00:27:30position G7 kind of sprinting the notes
- 00:27:33out and then I end on my C major 7 chord
- 00:27:36isn't that beautiful and then you can do
- 00:27:39your open position 251 so I can start up
- 00:27:42here on my D Minor 7 notice I'm
- 00:27:45spreading the notes out from the
- 00:27:47original chord then my
- 00:27:50G7 there it is kind of looks like a root
- 00:27:52position chord and then on my C major 7
- 00:27:55I end here and once again this is that
- 00:27:57open position C major 7 chord now I
- 00:28:01recommend that you practice this for 5
- 00:28:03to 10 minutes per day with a goal tempo
- 00:28:06of 150 bpm and I recommend that you
- 00:28:09focus on one key per month so in this
- 00:28:12case you're focused on the key of C
- 00:28:15major once you've practiced this for one
- 00:28:17month then in the next month go to a new
- 00:28:20key and practice your 251 in that key
- 00:28:23using your cord shells and by the end of
- 00:28:2512 months you will have PR practice all
- 00:28:28of your cord shells in all 12 keys by
- 00:28:30the way if you want to do a deep dive on
- 00:28:32cord shells we have two really good
- 00:28:35courses on these topics including our
- 00:28:37chord shell and guide tones exercises
- 00:28:40course and our play piano lead sheets
- 00:28:43with shells and guide tones and in these
- 00:28:45courses you'll learn how to master these
- 00:28:47cord shells how to use them in Tunes so
- 00:28:50I'll put a link to those below all right
- 00:28:52if you're an intermediate level pianist
- 00:28:54and you want to master your Jazz chords
- 00:28:56there are a lot of of different chords
- 00:28:58that you're going to play in jazz but
- 00:28:59one of the most important types that
- 00:29:01you'll play at an intermediate level are
- 00:29:03what are called rootless voicings and
- 00:29:06they sound like
- 00:29:13this they are these beautiful crunchy
- 00:29:18chords that you use when you're
- 00:29:20accompanying Jazz and you can even use
- 00:29:22them in the left hand for a
- 00:29:26melody
- 00:29:29you hear those crunchy chords those are
- 00:29:31rootless voicing chords now there are
- 00:29:33two types of chords for rootless
- 00:29:35voicings there are AV voicing chords and
- 00:29:38B voicing chords so on a C major 7 if
- 00:29:42you add the ninth to this chord and get
- 00:29:44rid of the root you have your a voicing
- 00:29:48it is a rootless voicing chord so
- 00:29:50there's no root in the chord now if you
- 00:29:52put the seventh on the bottom you have
- 00:29:54What's called the B voicing so a a
- 00:29:57voicing B voicing you can do this on
- 00:30:00your other chord types as well like your
- 00:30:02C Minor 7 if you put a nine on the top
- 00:30:05and you get rid of the root you have
- 00:30:07your a voicing for a C minor and if you
- 00:30:10put the seventh on the bottom you have
- 00:30:12your B voicing same with your dominant
- 00:30:14chord it's like a C7 if you add a nine
- 00:30:18on the top and you substitute the fifth
- 00:30:21for the 13 and you get rid of the root
- 00:30:25you have a beautiful chord called a c
- 00:30:27e13 and if you put the root on the
- 00:30:29bottom sounds really nice so this is
- 00:30:31your a voicing for a dominant chord and
- 00:30:34then if you put the seventh on the
- 00:30:36bottom you end up with your B voicing
- 00:30:39okay this is a
- 00:30:40C13 it's a very Jazzy way of playing a
- 00:30:43C7 chord so there's a great exercise to
- 00:30:46mastering your rootless voice and chords
- 00:30:48and it goes like
- 00:30:56this so basically I'm playing a 2 5 1
- 00:31:01chord progression in the key of C
- 00:31:03remember this is the most common chord
- 00:31:05progression in jazz and then I'm going
- 00:31:07to play my rootless voicings on the 251
- 00:31:10so on the D Minor 7 I'm going to play
- 00:31:12that a voicing on the D then on the
- 00:31:15G ooh I'm going to play a B voicing on
- 00:31:19that G7 remember the B voicing looks
- 00:31:22like this okay 1 3 5 7 9 you put the 13
- 00:31:26instead of the five and get rid of the
- 00:31:28root that's your G chord that's a b
- 00:31:30voicing and then my a voicing on my C
- 00:31:34chord and then I'm going to use a little
- 00:31:36six chord there as a substitute okay so
- 00:31:39that's the full chord progression 2 5 1
- 00:31:43one and then I'm going to play the same
- 00:31:45exercise but I'm going to start on a b
- 00:31:47voice sing on the D so we have a two
- 00:31:50five it's the same chord as this one but
- 00:31:54it's an a voicing and then one is is a b
- 00:31:57voicing and one the other really good
- 00:32:00exercise is to practice your rootless
- 00:32:02voicings in your left hand and so a
- 00:32:05great way to do this is to mix it with
- 00:32:06your
- 00:32:09scale okay basically I'm playing the 25
- 00:32:13one starting with a B voicing playing
- 00:32:16the C scale coming
- 00:32:18up and then here's my G chord okay and
- 00:32:22then my one chord
- 00:32:24c and then my sixth chord on the C
- 00:32:27and then you're going to bring it
- 00:32:32down so you're starting on an a voicing
- 00:32:35on the
- 00:32:37D there's your B voicing on the
- 00:32:40G A voicing on the C to your C6 chord
- 00:32:45now I recommend that you practice both
- 00:32:47of these
- 00:32:49exercises
- 00:32:51right and then the
- 00:32:53scale right and do them in one key per
- 00:32:57month so you're going to focus on the
- 00:32:59key of C major I recommend that you
- 00:33:01practice this for 5 to 10 minutes per
- 00:33:03day and that you set a goal tempo of 140
- 00:33:07BPM once you've practiced this for a
- 00:33:09month and you've hit your goal Tempo
- 00:33:12then I recommend that you move on to
- 00:33:13another key and by the end of the year
- 00:33:16you will have practiced all of your
- 00:33:18rootless voicings in all 12 keys by the
- 00:33:21way if you want to do a deep dive on
- 00:33:22rootless voice and chords I recommend
- 00:33:25that you check out our level six
- 00:33:27Foundation Learning track in this
- 00:33:29learning track you'll learn everything
- 00:33:31that you need to know to master rootless
- 00:33:33voice and chords and we have fulllength
- 00:33:35courses on each chord so major seven
- 00:33:38chords minor seven chords dominant seven
- 00:33:41chords half diminished chords altered
- 00:33:44chords how do you play rootless voicings
- 00:33:46on each of these chords we also show you
- 00:33:49how to use rootless voicings in chord
- 00:33:51progressions like your 251 chord
- 00:33:53progression and how to use rootless
- 00:33:55voicings in lead sheets so I'll put a
- 00:33:58link to that learning track below all
- 00:34:00right if you're an advanced pianist and
- 00:34:01you want to master your Jazz chords I
- 00:34:04think the most important chords for you
- 00:34:05to learn are called qual voicings and
- 00:34:08they sound like
- 00:34:16this a qual voicing is basically a chord
- 00:34:20that is stacked in primarily fourth
- 00:34:23intervals so instead of a chord being
- 00:34:25stacked in thirds like we're
- 00:34:27traditionally taught you end up with
- 00:34:28these
- 00:34:30chords that have lots of fourth
- 00:34:32intervals in them and they have a very
- 00:34:35cool Jazzy sound to them so as an
- 00:34:38example instead of C major like this
- 00:34:40you'd play it e a d g and C all fourth
- 00:34:45intervals okay instead of a C minor
- 00:34:48chord like this like a C Minor 7 you'd
- 00:34:51play it like
- 00:34:52this ooh all fourth intervals and we're
- 00:34:56adding some notes to these chords like
- 00:34:58chord extensions and chord alterations
- 00:35:01finally on a dominant chord like this if
- 00:35:03you want to play a qual
- 00:35:05voicing you could play it like this okay
- 00:35:08fourth interval fourth interval fourth
- 00:35:10interval the best way to practice your
- 00:35:12qual chords are to harmonize each of the
- 00:35:16notes of your scale using a qual voicing
- 00:35:21so for example let's say you wanted to
- 00:35:22harmonize a C major 7 chord and you
- 00:35:26wanted to be able to use any Melody note
- 00:35:28of the c major scale well here's how you
- 00:35:31would harmonize it for the first note of
- 00:35:33the scale we play all fourth intervals
- 00:35:36down and you have a beautiful chord
- 00:35:38called a
- 00:35:39c69 okay the next one you play it like
- 00:35:42this okay fourth fourth and a fourth
- 00:35:45okay it's a c69 then like this okay
- 00:35:49fourth fourth Fourth okay for the F
- 00:35:52you're going to harmonize it like a D
- 00:35:54Minor 11 okay a little bit different
- 00:35:57then on the fifth you're going to
- 00:35:58harmonize it like this fourth fourth
- 00:36:01Fourth then on the sixth going to
- 00:36:03harmonize it like this lots of fourth
- 00:36:06intervals okay and then on the seventh
- 00:36:08we going to harmonize it like this
- 00:36:10fourth fourth Fourth okay beautiful so
- 00:36:13the full
- 00:36:17scale what about a minor seven chord
- 00:36:20like a C Minor 7 how would you harmonize
- 00:36:23each of these notes using qual chords
- 00:36:26well most most Melodies on a minor 7
- 00:36:28chord use notes from the C Dorian scale
- 00:36:32so you want to be able to harmonize any
- 00:36:34one of these seven notes using qual
- 00:36:37chords so for the first Melody note the
- 00:36:40C we're going to play it like this this
- 00:36:43is called a C minor 11 then for the next
- 00:36:45one we just move the top note up then
- 00:36:49for the third the E flat going to play
- 00:36:52like this
- 00:36:53okay all fourth intervals really nice
- 00:36:56sound then for the F I'm going to play
- 00:36:58it like this fourth fourth Fourth then
- 00:37:02the G ooh really pretty fourth fourth
- 00:37:05Fourth the a we're going to harmonize as
- 00:37:08a D Minor 11 so we're going to just
- 00:37:10change the chord a little bit because it
- 00:37:12harmonizes better then the seven
- 00:37:14harmonize like this fourth fourth Fourth
- 00:37:17okay this is a C minor 11 chord and
- 00:37:20finally same chord that we started with
- 00:37:22for dominant seven chords I recommend
- 00:37:24that you use your C Mixel in scale and
- 00:37:28so you're going to harmonize each note
- 00:37:29of the scale like this starting from the
- 00:37:32C lots of fourth intervals fourth fourth
- 00:37:36Fourth by the way this is an augmented
- 00:37:38fourth okay next one top three notes
- 00:37:42move
- 00:37:43up next one little different here fourth
- 00:37:47fourth Fourth little crunch on the
- 00:37:50top harmonize the next one as a D Minor
- 00:37:5411 then the next one okay move this back
- 00:37:57up again all fourths you do have this
- 00:38:00augmented
- 00:38:02fourth top note moves
- 00:38:04up then on the seventh we play it like
- 00:38:07this and finally move the top note up
- 00:38:10for the last chord so I recommend that
- 00:38:12you practice these three exercises in
- 00:38:14one key each month so in month number
- 00:38:17one focus on the key of C major first on
- 00:38:20your major seven chord Minor 7 chord and
- 00:38:23dominant seven chord I recommend that
- 00:38:25you practice this for 5 to 10 minutes
- 00:38:28per day with a goal tempo of 70 BPM and
- 00:38:32once you've hit this goal Tempo and
- 00:38:34you've practiced it for a month then in
- 00:38:36the next month move on to a new key and
- 00:38:38so by the end of the year you will have
- 00:38:40practiced all of these quartal voicing
- 00:38:43chords in all 12 of your keys by the way
- 00:38:46if you want to do a deep dive on qual
- 00:38:48voicings I recommend that you check out
- 00:38:50our level 9 foundations learning track
- 00:38:53in this learning track you'll learn
- 00:38:55everything that you need to to know
- 00:38:57about qual voicings and how to master
- 00:38:59them on each chord type like major
- 00:39:01chords minor chords dominant chords your
- 00:39:05half- diminished and your diminished
- 00:39:06chords you'll learn essential exercises
- 00:39:09over the most common chord progressions
- 00:39:12plus how to use qual voicings on lead
- 00:39:14sheets so I'll put a link to that
- 00:39:16learning track below all right the
- 00:39:18fourth pillar of becoming a well-rounded
- 00:39:20jazz pianist is to be able to play lead
- 00:39:22sheets and lead sheets are basically the
- 00:39:25raw material that jazz musicians used to
- 00:39:28basically Play Beautiful Arrangements of
- 00:39:30jazz
- 00:39:39tunes okay when I was just playing that
- 00:39:42all that I knew were the basic Melody
- 00:39:45and basic chords and from there I was
- 00:39:47making it my own I was adding all of
- 00:39:49these additional notes and cool rhythms
- 00:39:52and so this is what Jazz musicians do
- 00:39:54they take a basic Melody and chords and
- 00:39:57they Jazz it up they make it their own
- 00:39:59so if you're a beginner jazz pianist how
- 00:40:02do you play a lead sheet and make it
- 00:40:04sound good well a really great approach
- 00:40:07if you're a beginner jazz pianist is to
- 00:40:09use chord shells to play jazz standards
- 00:40:13and so if you take the tune after you've
- 00:40:19gone the chords are actually really
- 00:40:22simple but you don't want to play them
- 00:40:24in this really ordinary way if you're
- 00:40:26beginner you might want to play it like
- 00:40:41this so what I'm basically doing is
- 00:40:43instead of playing the basic chords and
- 00:40:46the melody like this I'm just using
- 00:40:49chord shells meaning I'm getting rid of
- 00:40:51the fifth of the chord and then I'm
- 00:40:54spreading these notes out
- 00:40:57underneath the melody okay so we
- 00:41:01have okay that's my F major chord my F
- 00:41:04major 7 and then instead of F6 like this
- 00:41:08I spread it out I
- 00:41:10have there's my melody is that beautiful
- 00:41:14and then my C major 7 it's spread out
- 00:41:17like
- 00:41:17this these are chord shells and then we
- 00:41:22have okay it's my A7 and then D7
- 00:41:27okay there's my D7 I'm just spreading
- 00:41:29the notes out okay these are those open
- 00:41:32voicings and then it's my G7 chord shell
- 00:41:37so there's no fifth in the chord okay
- 00:41:40and then my C major
- 00:41:427 okay is my C major 7 spread out got
- 00:41:46the third up
- 00:41:48here and then my
- 00:41:51C7 again it's a spread out C7 chord
- 00:41:54chord shell now I recommend that that
- 00:41:56you focus on learning one new song per
- 00:41:59month and you can find new Tunes in a
- 00:42:02fake book go through your chords make
- 00:42:04sure you can play the basic chords and
- 00:42:06then practice spreading your notes out
- 00:42:09to use these beautiful chord shells by
- 00:42:11the way if you want to do a deep dive on
- 00:42:13playing lead sheets I encourage you to
- 00:42:16check out our most comprehensive course
- 00:42:18on playing lead sheets which is our
- 00:42:21Autumn Leaves course this is a beginner
- 00:42:24to intermediate level course where
- 00:42:26you'll learn everything that you need to
- 00:42:28know about taking a basic lead sheet and
- 00:42:30turning it into a beautiful Jazz
- 00:42:32standard how to walk baselines how to
- 00:42:35color your chords how to solo over the
- 00:42:38tune so I'll put a link to that course
- 00:42:40below all right if you're on the
- 00:42:41intermediate side and you want to master
- 00:42:43playing lead sheets I recommend that you
- 00:42:46use rootless voicings to play tunes and
- 00:42:49so rootless voicings sound like
- 00:42:55this
- 00:43:06I'm basically jumping
- 00:43:08up to each of the rootless voicings that
- 00:43:11I taught you earlier so this is an F
- 00:43:13major 9 B
- 00:43:15voicing okay F minor
- 00:43:196 that's a b voicing and then C major
- 00:43:247 that's an AO
- 00:43:28sing ooh very cool chord this is an a13
- 00:43:32that's a b
- 00:43:34voicing that's an a voicing I have the
- 00:43:36third on the
- 00:43:38bottom that's my G13 B voicing and
- 00:43:44then that's a a voicing on a C major
- 00:43:499 okay there's my C13 a voicing now I
- 00:43:53recommend that you focus on learning One
- 00:43:55new tune each month and you can find
- 00:43:58lots of great tunes by opening up a fake
- 00:44:01book all right if you're an advanced
- 00:44:03pianist and you want to master playing
- 00:44:05lead sheets then I recommend that you
- 00:44:07focus on walking baselines and playing
- 00:44:10block chords in the right hand and it
- 00:44:13sounds like
- 00:44:25this
- 00:44:29so what I'm doing is I'm basically
- 00:44:30walking a
- 00:44:32baseline on each of my chords and then
- 00:44:35in my right hand I'm grabbing some chord
- 00:44:39tones okay and then I'm hitting what are
- 00:44:41called block chords and a block chord is
- 00:44:44a four or five note chord where you
- 00:44:47harmonize the melody and you keep all of
- 00:44:49the notes within an octave okay so we
- 00:44:54have and and then on the
- 00:44:57F notice I'm grabbing those block chords
- 00:45:01and then on the C
- 00:45:04chord okay another block chord and
- 00:45:08then okay I'm not grabbing block chords
- 00:45:11the entire time especially when the
- 00:45:13melody is really
- 00:45:16busy okay on the D
- 00:45:19chord okay two block chords
- 00:45:23there okay and then on the G chord
- 00:45:27see that block chords and
- 00:45:33then and there's my block chord I
- 00:45:36recommend that you focus on learning one
- 00:45:38new tune each month using this technique
- 00:45:41of walking Bas lines and the rightand
- 00:45:43block chords and then you can open a
- 00:45:45fake book and in the next month pick a
- 00:45:47new tune to practice this technique on
- 00:45:50by the way if you want to do a deep dive
- 00:45:51on playing lead sheets at an advanced
- 00:45:54level we have a really good course
- 00:45:55course on this topic which is our Fly Me
- 00:45:58to the Moon course where you'll learn
- 00:46:00how to take a basic lead sheet and turn
- 00:46:01it into a really hip Jazz Arrangement
- 00:46:04how to walk baselines how to solo how to
- 00:46:07add beautiful chords to the arrangement
- 00:46:09so I'll put a link to that below all
- 00:46:11right the fifth pillar of being a great
- 00:46:13jazz pianist is having the ability to
- 00:46:16Solo or to improvise and often times you
- 00:46:19have a chord
- 00:46:21progression and you just want to play a
- 00:46:23little solo on it
- 00:46:30[Music]
- 00:46:34now if you're more on the beginner side
- 00:46:36you might see that and think Johnny
- 00:46:37there's no way I can do that only
- 00:46:39Advanced pianists can solo at the piano
- 00:46:42but that couldn't be further from the
- 00:46:43truth you can be a beginner pianist and
- 00:46:46solo and it can still
- 00:46:51sound really nice in fact if you're a
- 00:46:54beginner I only only recommend that you
- 00:46:56use one scale to get started soloing and
- 00:47:00you might be surprised to know that it's
- 00:47:02actually the major scale and you can
- 00:47:04create some really cool
- 00:47:08lines using only these seven white notes
- 00:47:12so what you're going to do is you're
- 00:47:13going to practice improvising over the 2
- 00:47:16five 1 chord progression in the key of C
- 00:47:19it's the most common Jazz progression so
- 00:47:22if you practice improvising over this
- 00:47:23progression you're going to have a much
- 00:47:25better time soloing on actual Tunes okay
- 00:47:29D Minor G7 C major 7 and in the right
- 00:47:33hand you're going to use the notes from
- 00:47:34the c major
- 00:47:35[Music]
- 00:47:39scale does that make sense now when
- 00:47:41you're improvising you want to play
- 00:47:43short little lines or
- 00:47:45[Music]
- 00:47:54phrases
- 00:47:56notice how I put little gaps in between
- 00:47:58each line but my lines are actually not
- 00:48:01random what I'm doing is anytime I end a
- 00:48:04line I try to Target one of my chord
- 00:48:08tones so on my D Minor 7 chord when I
- 00:48:11play a line I might try to Target the
- 00:48:13third of this
- 00:48:15chord you see that and I end on the F
- 00:48:19okay and you can do this on each of your
- 00:48:21chords so on the G chord the third is
- 00:48:23the B so I might play this
- 00:48:26line and I end on the B doesn't that
- 00:48:28sound nice and then on the C chord my
- 00:48:31third is an e so I might Target this e
- 00:48:33in my
- 00:48:35line there it is and then
- 00:48:38again doesn't that sound nice you can
- 00:48:40also practice targeting your fifth of
- 00:48:43each chord okay so you can play lines
- 00:48:45like
- 00:48:46this sounds nice I'm ending on my a and
- 00:48:49then on my G my fifth is the D so I
- 00:48:53might play
- 00:48:54this see that I end on my D okay then on
- 00:48:59my next chord the C major 7 I might
- 00:49:01Target my G how about a longer line how
- 00:49:03about
- 00:49:06this
- 00:49:09oo see how I end on my G there you can
- 00:49:12also Target your roots like on the D
- 00:49:14chord I could Target my D in my
- 00:49:17line see that line landing on the D and
- 00:49:22then same thing on the G what's my root
- 00:49:24it's a g so I could play
- 00:49:28this see how I land on the G and then
- 00:49:31same on the C chord I could Target my
- 00:49:33root when I improvise my line so I could
- 00:49:36play something like
- 00:49:39this okay did you hear
- 00:49:43that and then twice on the C so I
- 00:49:45recommend that you practice these
- 00:49:47exercises for 5 to 10 minutes per day
- 00:49:50and that you set a goal tempo of 100 BPM
- 00:49:54and focus on one key per month so you're
- 00:49:57going to practice improvising in the key
- 00:49:59of C major for one month and once you
- 00:50:01reach your goal Tempo and you've done
- 00:50:03this for one month then in the next
- 00:50:05month move on to a new key and practice
- 00:50:07improvising in that key and by the end
- 00:50:09of 12 months you will have practiced
- 00:50:12improvising in all 12 keys by the way if
- 00:50:15you want to do a deep dive on the topic
- 00:50:17of soloing using chord tone targets we
- 00:50:20have a really great full length course
- 00:50:22on this called 251 soloing with cord
- 00:50:25tone targets I'll put a link to that
- 00:50:28below all right if you're an
- 00:50:29intermediate level pianist and you want
- 00:50:30to solo playing jazz piano one of the
- 00:50:33most important techniques is called the
- 00:50:36upper and lower neighbor technique and
- 00:50:38it sounds like
- 00:50:48this notice how occasionally I'm adding
- 00:50:51some of these black notes to my rightand
- 00:50:54solo and it adds some really cool colors
- 00:50:56to my right- hand solo well these are
- 00:50:59the upper and lower neighbors so here's
- 00:51:01how it works basically if you take a
- 00:51:03chord like a C major 7 each one of these
- 00:51:07notes from the chord has a lower
- 00:51:09neighbor which is the note a half step
- 00:51:12below each of these notes so the lower
- 00:51:15neighbor to C is the B the lower
- 00:51:18neighbor to e is E flat the lower
- 00:51:21neighbor to G is g flat and the lower
- 00:51:24neighbor to B is your B flat you also
- 00:51:26have upper neighbors and the upper
- 00:51:28neighbors are the notes half Step Above
- 00:51:31each of your chord tones so you have d
- 00:51:33flat to c f to e a flat to G and C to B
- 00:51:40and you can do this for every chord type
- 00:51:42like a c dominant 7 you have your lower
- 00:51:47neighbors and your upper
- 00:51:53neighbors same with C minor seven you
- 00:51:56have
- 00:51:59lower and
- 00:52:04upper so how do you use these upper and
- 00:52:07lower Neighbors in your solo well if you
- 00:52:09were soloing on the 251 2 5 1 in the key
- 00:52:14of C you can use any notes of your C
- 00:52:17major scale over your
- 00:52:23251 except you can add these upper and
- 00:52:27lower Neighbors in between the right
- 00:52:29notes in your right hand okay so as an
- 00:52:32example let's start with lower neighbors
- 00:52:35how can I use some lower neighbors to
- 00:52:37get me to each of the chord tones on my
- 00:52:39D Minor 7 well I could play a line like
- 00:52:44this okay do you see that lower neighbor
- 00:52:48to my chord
- 00:52:49tone and then on the G chord I could do
- 00:52:52something like
- 00:52:54this
- 00:52:55okay that's the C scale lower neighbor
- 00:52:58to the chord tone that's the B walking
- 00:53:01it down and then on the C chord I could
- 00:53:03do
- 00:53:05this okay walking lower neighbor into
- 00:53:09the G that's the fifth and I end my line
- 00:53:13on the C okay that's how lower neighbors
- 00:53:15work you can also use upper neighbors to
- 00:53:17your chord tones so I could play a line
- 00:53:20like
- 00:53:24this
- 00:53:26taking my C
- 00:53:28scale upper neighbor to the chord
- 00:53:31tone and then on the
- 00:53:33G upper neighbor to the chord tone and
- 00:53:37then we have now to the
- 00:53:40C upper neighbor to G and upper neighbor
- 00:53:45to C finally you can mix your lower and
- 00:53:48upper neighbors and do something like
- 00:53:54this
- 00:53:56so I'm going lower neighbor upper
- 00:53:59neighbor to D it's like a little
- 00:54:01surround and then on the
- 00:54:03G lower neighbor upper neighbor to G
- 00:54:08outlining the chord and then I have just
- 00:54:12outlining the
- 00:54:13chord upper neighbor to the chord tone
- 00:54:17and then I'm going to go upper neighbor
- 00:54:18lower neighbor to the G now I recommend
- 00:54:21that you practice improvising for 5 to
- 00:54:2310 minutes per day and a great goal
- 00:54:25Tempo is 120 BPM and I encourage you to
- 00:54:29focus on one key per month so as you're
- 00:54:32building out these lines and improvising
- 00:54:34using upper and lower neighbors focus on
- 00:54:37the key of C major for one month and
- 00:54:40then in the next month work on a new key
- 00:54:42and at the end of 12 months you will
- 00:54:44have practiced soloing in all 12 keys by
- 00:54:47the way if you want to do a deep dive on
- 00:54:49soloing with upper and lower neighbors
- 00:54:51we have a great fulllength course on
- 00:54:53this exact topic called 251 soloing with
- 00:54:56upper and lower neighbors I'll put a
- 00:54:58link to that below all right if you want
- 00:55:00to improvise at the advanced level then
- 00:55:02you really want to practice improvising
- 00:55:04with multiple scales and if you use
- 00:55:07multiple skills when you're improvising
- 00:55:10it might sound something like
- 00:55:24this so how was I able to do that well I
- 00:55:27was using multiple scales when I was
- 00:55:29just improvising and so it made my
- 00:55:32improvisation sound a lot more
- 00:55:34interesting because you were hearing all
- 00:55:35of these different colors combined so
- 00:55:37the way that I recommend that you do
- 00:55:39this is to solo on the turnaround chord
- 00:55:42progression and the turnaround
- 00:55:44progression in the key of C can start on
- 00:55:47different chords but one way to do it is
- 00:55:49to start on your two chord your D Minor
- 00:55:517 and then go to a G7 your five chord
- 00:55:54and and then your one chord which is C
- 00:55:57and then your six chord which is an A7
- 00:56:00and this turns you back around to the D
- 00:56:03Minor 7 chord in the right hand you're
- 00:56:05going to use a different scale for each
- 00:56:08one of your chords so on your D Minor 7
- 00:56:11chord your two chord you're going to use
- 00:56:13your D Dorian scale so all white notes
- 00:56:17on the five chord on your G7 you're
- 00:56:19going to use a really cool scale called
- 00:56:22your dominant diminished scale and I
- 00:56:25taught you this scale earlier in this
- 00:56:27lesson okay on the one chord you're
- 00:56:29going to use the C lydian scale it's a
- 00:56:32beautiful scale you can use on major
- 00:56:34chords and finally on your A7 chord
- 00:56:37you're going to use your a dominant
- 00:56:40diminish scale and so what you want to
- 00:56:43do is practice making up little lines
- 00:56:45using each of these scales and combining
- 00:56:48the scales in an interesting way so
- 00:56:50first I recommend that you practice
- 00:56:52improvising lines that come down the
- 00:56:54piano that combine your scales here's an
- 00:57:03example so I'm starting with the notes
- 00:57:05of D
- 00:57:07Dorian okay on the G I'm using that g
- 00:57:10dominant
- 00:57:15diminished okay and then on the C I'm
- 00:57:17using C
- 00:57:21lydian and then I'm using a dominant
- 00:57:24diminish
- 00:57:28you can also practice uplines like
- 00:57:36this so I'm coming up D
- 00:57:41Dorian a little lower neighbor to my B
- 00:57:45and I'm going G dominant
- 00:57:48diminish okay now my C
- 00:57:52chord and on the a you using a dominant
- 00:57:58diminished finally I recommend that you
- 00:58:01practice improvising by combining your
- 00:58:03uplines and your down lines and here's
- 00:58:06an
- 00:58:12example so for this line I'm using
- 00:58:14primarily triplets I'm coming of D
- 00:58:21Dorian little lower neighbor to the B
- 00:58:24and I'm using G dominant
- 00:58:26[Music]
- 00:58:30diminished and then I'm going to land on
- 00:58:32my C little triplet down the
- 00:58:37chord and I'm going to use C
- 00:58:40lydian okay to my a and I'm just going
- 00:58:43to outline the chord
- 00:58:45here kind of an A7 with a flat
- 00:58:49nine to the flat n now I recommend that
- 00:58:52you practice improvising for five to 10
- 00:58:54minutes per day and a good goal Tempo is
- 00:58:57about 120 BPM I do recommend that you
- 00:59:01focus on one key each month and when you
- 00:59:04feel good improvising in that key and at
- 00:59:06the full Tempo then in the next month
- 00:59:09move on to a new key and by the end of
- 00:59:11the year you will have practiced soloing
- 00:59:14in all 12 keys by the way if you want to
- 00:59:16do a deep dive on mixing different
- 00:59:18skills when you're soloing we have a
- 00:59:20really good course on this called our
- 00:59:22Jazz ballad soloing challenge I'll put a
