00:00:02
hi everyone it's Jenny today's video is
00:00:04
a very selfish video where I just want
00:00:05
to talk about two topics that I love so
00:00:08
the first is obviously with this channel
00:00:10
books and the second one is Studio jibli
00:00:13
or Studio gibli movies I want to tie the
00:00:16
two get together and give you some
00:00:17
recommendations to fill that studio
00:00:19
jibli void in your hearts because there
00:00:21
are obviously limited movies and there's
00:00:23
only so much rewatching we can
00:00:26
reasonably do please don't bark so I
00:00:29
think we'll start off with recapping
00:00:31
what exactly it means to be a studio
00:00:33
gibli or Studio gibl Vibe based on the
00:00:36
recommendations I'm looking for on that
00:00:38
note I'll also preface by saying I know
00:00:39
a lot of people say studio gibli um I
00:00:42
grew up for some reason staying saying
00:00:45
jibli so if that bothers you I will be
00:00:47
doing that through the whole video and I
00:00:48
hope you understand all right so moving
00:00:50
into the themes the obvious thing about
00:00:53
Studio ji is all of the movies are
00:00:55
beautiful animations so a lot of these
00:00:58
books that I'm recommending
00:01:00
I actually picture it sometimes in that
00:01:03
style of like pastel and and wonderful
00:01:07
beautiful illustrations that have a
00:01:08
certain flow to them however that's
00:01:10
obviously not the main reason we're
00:01:11
choosing it because that's really just
00:01:13
the core of like what the movies look
00:01:15
like themselves if we get into the
00:01:17
themes that's where you'll see a lot of
00:01:19
these recommendations fitting in so the
00:01:21
very big obvious point is that they are
00:01:24
all kind of fantasy related stories very
00:01:27
frequently built into contemporary
00:01:30
stories about you know Modern Life and
00:01:33
sometimes like historical as well on top
00:01:36
of that I find all the movies have like
00:01:38
very yes very simple and often very
00:01:41
wholesome stories but they actually have
00:01:43
underlying very complex themes and
00:01:47
sometimes darker themes as well so
00:01:48
you'll see some of the books touching on
00:01:50
that balance between them there's also
00:01:53
the constant exploration of General
00:01:55
humanism and also nature and how the two
00:01:58
actually come together very frequently
00:02:00
in the studio jibli and Miyazaki movies
00:02:03
so that's something that I took into
00:02:04
account for sure while recommending this
00:02:06
list of books and finally what I tried
00:02:08
to do as well is incorporate the fact
00:02:11
that I think genuinely for the content
00:02:13
that comes out of Japan Production
00:02:15
Studios Studio JBL is very very good at
00:02:18
exploring complex female protagonists
00:02:19
very frequently so in many of the books
00:02:21
I recommend I'll be looking for that
00:02:23
theme as well with that recap aside I
00:02:26
want to go straight into the six books I
00:02:28
would recommend for all Studio jibli
00:02:30
fans to read and to check out I'll also
00:02:33
give you exactly which movies they
00:02:34
remind me of so if you're a fan of
00:02:36
certain movies specifically you'll know
00:02:38
um maybe leaning towards some of the
00:02:40
recommendations over others all right
00:02:42
let's get started the first book I want
00:02:43
to talk about is the reason that this
00:02:45
list even exists many many years ago
00:02:48
okay not many years ago probably two or
00:02:49
three years ago I was reading this book
00:02:51
and I thought this is so heavily Studio
00:02:54
jibli that I must start right now on
00:02:57
thinking of a list a reading list for
00:02:59
Studio JBL fans and that is the
00:03:02
mysterious Society of Lady Scoundrels I
00:03:04
would recommend this movie to fans of
00:03:07
Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in the
00:03:09
Sky so both the castle related movies
00:03:11
I'll first get into what the book is
00:03:13
about so this book is actually part of a
00:03:16
larger series of fantasy romance chaos
00:03:21
I'm just going to say chaos books and
00:03:22
they're about Pirates Who Don't they're
00:03:25
not Pirates of ships they're Pirates of
00:03:27
flying houses which sounds ridic
00:03:29
ridiculous it was actually exactly what
00:03:32
I needed in the moment I was reading it
00:03:33
and I actually gave this book five stars
00:03:35
because I just had such a good time with
00:03:38
the story essentially you have these
00:03:40
ladies in society who are very proper
00:03:44
and have very good etiquette and they're
00:03:46
like essentially the perfect kind of
00:03:49
eligible ladies in society but at the
00:03:52
same time they're Pirates Who are very
00:03:53
into theft and essentially the main girl
00:03:57
in this book gets an assassin assigned
00:03:59
to her So This Man shows up and his
00:04:01
assignment is to kill her and that means
00:04:03
it's like a huge honor for the for the
00:04:06
matriarchy and the woman in this book
00:04:08
for some reason so they're all part of
00:04:10
this like scoundrel Pirates Society of
00:04:12
sorts and having an assassination
00:04:14
attempt on you is deemed as a very high
00:04:16
honor the romance line is between her
00:04:18
and her assassin as they fly around in
00:04:20
houses and you know chaos ensues um I
00:04:23
won't say much more than that but it
00:04:25
really is that crazy and that funny to
00:04:28
read so I just found this book to be a
00:04:30
very very fun time where this reminds me
00:04:32
of how's Moving Castle and Castle in the
00:04:35
Sky is very obviously in Castle in the
00:04:37
Sky you have like almost an identical
00:04:39
storyline around the pirate matriarchy
00:04:42
so you have that pirate society that
00:04:43
flies around and I think vehicles or
00:04:45
maybe even like those those houses or
00:04:48
blimps as well um so it's almost
00:04:51
identical to the setup of the story and
00:04:53
maybe it even took inspiration from that
00:04:55
so that's where you get the level of
00:04:57
crazy like amazing badass matriarchal um
00:05:02
societies from at the same time the
00:05:04
romance to me is very reminiscent of how
00:05:06
Moving Castle sometimes the humor is
00:05:08
quite similar in just the level of
00:05:11
preposterousness that is written in so I
00:05:13
would just really recommend this book
00:05:15
for for fans of the two movies the
00:05:17
second book is going to take a bit of a
00:05:19
turn into the darker and complex themes
00:05:21
that we see in studio jii sometimes and
00:05:23
this book is Juniper and Thorne Juniper
00:05:25
and Thorne is about three sisters and it
00:05:27
follows one of the sisters as the main
00:05:29
character C and they're essentially
00:05:31
locked up in their house by their dad
00:05:33
and they're three of the last I believe
00:05:35
like existing witches in this society
00:05:38
and rather than using being able to use
00:05:40
their power for all that there is
00:05:42
potential for they end up being used by
00:05:45
their dad and sold for like little
00:05:47
Services here and there the story starts
00:05:49
off when the sisters finally kind of
00:05:51
sneak out at night one night and they go
00:05:54
out into the world and they just
00:05:55
experience the magic behind it um
00:05:57
there's a lot more that goes into the
00:05:58
story but I won't go too much into the
00:06:01
full premise of it because I think
00:06:02
you'll need to check it out so Juniper
00:06:04
and Thorn really reminds me of Spirited
00:06:06
Away and Princess monoc both because
00:06:08
these are the two Studio ji movies that
00:06:10
I believe touch on the most dark themes
00:06:13
um in this book there's actually quite a
00:06:15
bit revolving around um abuse obviously
00:06:18
being three women Locked Away by their
00:06:21
dad in this house and being largely
00:06:24
controlled with their powers and also
00:06:27
there's that kind of grotesque imagery
00:06:29
as well um that is similar to
00:06:32
specifically Spirited Away in princess
00:06:33
monoke in the sense where um there's a
00:06:36
lot of like I think different monsters
00:06:39
and different creatures that exist in
00:06:41
this universe in Juniper and Thorn that
00:06:43
have that grotesque level of imagery
00:06:45
that's very reminiscent of the
00:06:46
illustrations behind those those two
00:06:48
movies that I'm also talking about it's
00:06:50
very simplified but when I read this
00:06:51
book I was also thinking very strongly
00:06:54
of studio jibli and that's how I
00:06:55
pictured a lot of and visualized a lot
00:06:58
of the creatures that the book described
00:06:59
so I would recommend this book very very
00:07:01
strongly I know a lot of people in book
00:07:03
talk and book communities really enjoy
00:07:05
it um just be prepared to know because
00:07:07
of the movies I tied it with it is less
00:07:09
of the Feelgood story and more of that
00:07:11
like Dark Fantasy side of things I have
00:07:14
the third book I'm going to recommend
00:07:16
and it is Legends and lates this is such
00:07:19
a book talk specific book when cozy
00:07:21
fantasy was at its peak and this book I
00:07:25
really really enjoyed it's about an orc
00:07:29
who decides to stop her life of
00:07:31
adventuring and open up the first Cafe
00:07:34
that the village she's settling in would
00:07:35
have seen so it's her introducing like
00:07:37
coffee and lattes and pastries to the
00:07:40
different towns people and also the
00:07:42
people who are traveling around and
00:07:44
stopping by it's a very it's just the
00:07:46
definition of cozy fantasy because most
00:07:47
of it is just like small challenges here
00:07:49
and there but ultimately baking and
00:07:51
coffee out of the different cozy books
00:07:53
I've read this is definitely one of my
00:07:56
personal favorites probably because I'm
00:07:58
a big Cafe person and Baker myself so
00:08:00
it's just happens to tie in with my
00:08:02
hobbies this book really has that aspect
00:08:05
of found family and it's just overall
00:08:07
very heartwarming and uplifting for that
00:08:10
exact reason I would recommend this book
00:08:12
to fans of Kiki's Delivery Service so
00:08:15
Kiki's Delivery Service just reminds me
00:08:17
a lot of this similar Vibe where they
00:08:19
you know they just make their little
00:08:20
potions and obviously that legendary
00:08:23
Kiki cake and everything so it just fits
00:08:25
into that um idea of just uh quaint cozy
00:08:28
exploration
00:08:30
of a town and the surroundings and also
00:08:32
just this character um not really like
00:08:35
in the book she's not really at a Coming
00:08:36
of Age moment but she is in the moment
00:08:38
of kind of finding herself so similar to
00:08:41
where Kiki is as a character overall if
00:08:43
you're looking for like a
00:08:45
peaceful and fantasy vibe then uh
00:08:49
Legends and lattes is definitely your
00:08:51
book okay sticking on the more wholesome
00:08:53
route the next book I want to recommend
00:08:56
is the house in the Cerulean sea this
00:08:58
book was also a recommendation I got
00:09:01
from the internet but a lot of my book
00:09:03
club friends have only recently started
00:09:06
getting into this book so I think it's
00:09:07
still worth mentioning in case you never
00:09:09
read it house in the seran sea is one of
00:09:12
the most wholesome books I've read and I
00:09:14
would actually go like I've been meaning
00:09:16
to go buy this book and if I ever have
00:09:19
kids in the future this is very much a
00:09:21
book that is appropriate for them to
00:09:23
read and they would truly enjoy and get
00:09:25
swept into with the universe as well so
00:09:27
house in the Cilan sea is about two main
00:09:30
characters who are adults but it
00:09:32
revolves largely around the story of
00:09:34
also found family and just like children
00:09:37
the first main character lonus is
00:09:40
actually coming from a I think a
00:09:42
government type society and he is meant
00:09:45
to go visit this house of orphaned and
00:09:48
troubled children who are deemed to be
00:09:51
potentially Evil by Society so he's
00:09:54
there to inspect them and essentially
00:09:56
shut things down if needed the next
00:09:58
character who is this book is actually
00:10:01
the man who was running this orphanage
00:10:03
or this little house of Misfit children
00:10:06
and it becomes this wonderful wonderful
00:10:08
story of discovering the beauty behind
00:10:11
people who have been stigmatized and the
00:10:13
danger of making assumptions of people
00:10:15
um it really is almost like a big
00:10:17
metaphor for discrimination and racism
00:10:20
and everything but told in such a
00:10:21
wonderful honestly like family friendly
00:10:24
and magical way this book was just like
00:10:28
such a warm hug when when I read it a
00:10:29
few years ago and the way that the kids
00:10:32
are described as well is very Studio
00:10:34
jibbly because you'll see like there's a
00:10:36
mix of fantasy so they have different
00:10:38
powers or they're of different species
00:10:40
and everything so it really is a
00:10:42
wonderful beautiful world to go into all
00:10:45
of this to say I would recommend this to
00:10:47
fans of Kiki's Delivery Service as well
00:10:49
because of that element of just
00:10:51
childhood and wonderment and the the
00:10:54
charm of being kids and at the same time
00:10:56
that's also why I would recommend it for
00:10:58
my neighbor Toto I think it's just that
00:11:00
aspect of the story being told alongside
00:11:03
children who are discovering the good
00:11:06
and the bad in the world but also
00:11:07
finding support and Beauty alongside all
00:11:10
of it as well as the the wonderful El
00:11:12
element of weaving in adults as the main
00:11:15
characters who tell this story and who
00:11:17
are essentially like unb brainwashed
00:11:19
from being bitter people who are just
00:11:21
bureaucrats you know so um it's a very
00:11:24
nice story to tell all right I'm going
00:11:25
to talk about the next book which I read
00:11:28
very recently in My Autumn reading Vlog
00:11:30
and that is a psalm for the wild built
00:11:32
without a doubt if you're a studio jly
00:11:34
fan I would almost force you to read
00:11:37
this book and it's been really popular
00:11:39
lately for also being kind of a cozy
00:11:41
sci-fi book the premise of this book
00:11:43
I've described a few times already in
00:11:45
the channel but if in case you haven't
00:11:47
seen it is about a Utopia world where
00:11:50
Society is essentially at peace and very
00:11:52
wholesome and everyone's just like very
00:11:54
happy doing um mundane day-to-day little
00:11:57
jobs and tasks that they quite Frank
00:11:59
frankly assigned for themselves it's
00:12:00
about a main character who previously
00:12:02
was in I guess the peak of the city and
00:12:05
civilization of this Utopia and they
00:12:07
suddenly decide they want to change
00:12:09
their career so they become a t- monk
00:12:11
who travels around and serves tea and
00:12:13
chats with different inhabitants of
00:12:16
different towns they visit essentially
00:12:18
offering tea and therapy which is
00:12:20
wonderful then as the main character is
00:12:22
traveling they end up meeting a robot
00:12:24
who comes out from the forest and this
00:12:26
is when you get the introduction into
00:12:28
robots and how they've kind of chosen to
00:12:30
disappear from Human Society and live in
00:12:32
their own peaceful world and also do
00:12:34
their own thing this robot comes out and
00:12:36
has one Mission from all the robots
00:12:38
combined and their mission is to answer
00:12:40
the question what do people need and it
00:12:42
becomes a a very cozy story of the two
00:12:45
characters traveling together trying to
00:12:48
you know just discover fulfillment It's
00:12:50
a Wonderful story for people who feel
00:12:52
stuck in their current lives maybe their
00:12:55
current current careers and just how you
00:12:57
can go about mentally overcoming that
00:12:59
and finding Beauty in the everyday
00:13:01
because of this sort of existential
00:13:03
message I would actually recommend this
00:13:05
as part of the newest Miyazaki movie
00:13:07
which is the boy and the Heron which I
00:13:08
think has a similar level of existential
00:13:11
themes on what it means to live and a
00:13:14
song for the wild buil touches on that
00:13:16
exactly in such a Charming way on top of
00:13:18
that I would recommend this for Castle
00:13:19
in the Sky fans as well because I think
00:13:22
that is largely how I pictured the robot
00:13:24
in this story in Castle in the Sky there
00:13:27
is an existence of these like wild
00:13:30
robots who are covered in plants and
00:13:32
they're just you know doing their best
00:13:34
and really just like part of Nature and
00:13:36
that's really how I pictured the robots
00:13:38
in Assam for the wild build so I think a
00:13:40
lot of that visualization and themes
00:13:43
came straight to mind when I was reading
00:13:44
this book on top of that I think there
00:13:46
are elements of my neighbor todoro just
00:13:48
for the wholesomeness of it but
00:13:49
ultimately it actually does lump into
00:13:51
another movie I haven't mentioned yet
00:13:52
which is NASA in the Valley of the wind
00:13:55
hope I'm saying that right um I also
00:13:57
watched that movie for the first time
00:13:58
last year and it was so wonderful this
00:14:00
theme of humans and how they coexist but
00:14:03
also conflict with nature I think it it
00:14:06
it just reminded me a lot of the
00:14:09
illustrations in nasica of the Valley of
00:14:11
the wind with the Wonders of Nature and
00:14:13
how they added these little fantasy
00:14:14
elements into it and that's how I saw
00:14:17
kind of the world passing by when the
00:14:19
robot and the t- monk went on their
00:14:21
adventures together so definitely check
00:14:23
out a song for the wild built if you are
00:14:25
a studio jibi fan because I must have
00:14:27
listed like four or five movies there
00:14:28
that I coincides with okay we've made it
00:14:30
to the last book and this is the only
00:14:32
book that is not a fiction fantasy book
00:14:34
I just read this this month first book I
00:14:37
read in 2025 and I'm really glad I did
00:14:39
because I think it really tied the rest
00:14:41
of this video together so I am talking
00:14:44
about the book The Serviceberry by Robin
00:14:46
wall kimmerer she is the writer of
00:14:48
braiding spr grass which is one of the
00:14:50
most popular books I think of our decade
00:14:53
and she is a I'm going to say a botanist
00:14:56
but I know there's a lot of niches
00:14:57
within botney that she is is an expert
00:14:59
on so this is a non-fiction short essay
00:15:02
you could read this easily in one
00:15:03
sitting and it's about the theory of
00:15:06
nature abundance and how giving is tied
00:15:09
into nature and how it should be tied
00:15:11
into society rather than going about
00:15:13
everything in a capitalist way where
00:15:16
things come with a price this essay
00:15:19
explores the potential behind
00:15:21
sustainable living and behind building a
00:15:23
community that is largely formed around
00:15:25
giving she gives examples of how plants
00:15:28
and trees and bushes produce berries
00:15:31
that give to the animals around them and
00:15:33
the Animals then eat these berries and
00:15:36
scatter them across the lands to spread
00:15:38
the seeds and to give back to this
00:15:40
ecosystem of plants by helping them
00:15:43
replant themselves and essentially
00:15:44
reproduce and it's this wonderful cycle
00:15:46
where she touches on different things
00:15:48
that human communities are doing as well
00:15:50
now in terms of you know buy nothing
00:15:51
groups and all of that and how they can
00:15:53
build into it and she also uses it as a
00:15:55
wonderful chance to criticize the the
00:15:58
capitalist Society we live in where you
00:16:00
know ultimately even with the small
00:16:02
Grassroots movements and organizations
00:16:04
of these giving societies um we
00:16:07
ultimately still we have a long way to
00:16:08
go with where we can take you know
00:16:10
corporations and corporate greed and
00:16:12
move away from that into a society
00:16:15
that's built on sustainability and on
00:16:17
lifting each other up so this book is
00:16:20
exactly my cup of tea and it's also why
00:16:23
my favorite Studio jibli Movie is
00:16:25
Princess monoke these two go hand inand
00:16:27
because I think ultimately the message
00:16:29
is we have the choice as humans to live
00:16:32
alongside nature respect nature and live
00:16:34
sustainably or we have the choice to
00:16:37
live destructively until we're the ones
00:16:40
who simply perish and disappear and then
00:16:43
nature will always heal itself and I
00:16:44
think that's some of the message that
00:16:46
Robin walim has in her books as well
00:16:48
when she talks about the balance and the
00:16:50
Rejuvenation and kind of how nature will
00:16:53
always find a way to balance itself back
00:16:55
out but it's really about whether we
00:16:57
want to be there for it and to live in
00:16:59
harmony with it or if we're going to
00:17:01
continue down the certain paths we've
00:17:03
chosen today where we instead just
00:17:06
destroy our way through it until there's
00:17:08
nothing left for us it sounds Bleak but
00:17:11
the book really is wonderful and hopeful
00:17:14
so I really recommend this if you're
00:17:16
looking for just a short essay to read
00:17:18
and expand your non-fiction and also
00:17:21
feel some direction on where we can go
00:17:23
as a future and just feel inspired to
00:17:25
take some action so the service Berry
00:17:27
wonderful wonderful essay okay we've
00:17:29
made it to the end a lot of this was
00:17:31
just me rambling but I think now it's
00:17:34
time because I have not rewatched my top
00:17:37
re-watched movies from Miyazaki are
00:17:39
how's Moving Castle and princess monoke
00:17:42
but I also in case you haven't noticed
00:17:43
in this example I still have some movies
00:17:45
to get to notably I have not watched
00:17:47
Pono yet or I think there's some others
00:17:50
like The Wind Rises and all of those
00:17:52
movies that I need to get to slowly and
00:17:54
I've been working my way through them
00:17:55
talking through these books I've read
00:17:57
and also talking through some some of
00:17:59
the movies I feel very inspired to go
00:18:01
watch one of the movies this week and
00:18:03
get back into that feeling of things
00:18:05
with all of that I hope you enjoyed this
00:18:07
video if you have other books to
00:18:09
recommend please let me know because it
00:18:10
seems every time I'm reading a book and
00:18:12
I start picturing a studio ji Mia Zak
00:18:15
Universe in my head the book ends up
00:18:16
ranking higher on my list so I guess
00:18:19
that's just my preference in reading so
00:18:21
if you have other recommendations I
00:18:22
would love to hear them I hope you
00:18:24
enjoyed the me dressing somewhat to the
00:18:26
theme with my pastels and everything and
00:18:28
getting into the studio JBL Vibes and
00:18:31
yeah I hope you enjoyed thanks for
00:18:33
watching and I will see you all in the
00:18:35
next video where we talk about some
00:18:36
other books goodbye
