    hearts but it doesn't help us understand

    God's Word and so I'm gonna go ahead and

    just kind of confront that a little bit

    at least to the best of my ability why I

    think that this is not the the proper

    method of Bible study to just

    immediately go to the storms of your
  • 00:03:07
    life with this passage it can actually

    hurt your ability to read and study the
  • 00:03:11
    Bible if you too often allegorize
  • 00:03:13
    everything so that it's about whatever
  • 00:03:16
    you're going through in the moment
  • 00:03:17
    because the Bible is sometimes about
  • 00:03:20
    what you're going through in the moment
  • 00:03:21
    but it's not always just that and you
  • 00:03:24
    can miss out on the theology or beings
  • 00:03:25
    hot because you're only reading it to
  • 00:03:26
    find one thing how is this going to get

    me through my day and then you can be
  • 00:03:31
    missing out on all these other layers of
  • 00:03:32
    meaning and stuff that are in the text

    so what is the main focus the main focus

    is the identity of Jesus we get this

    because at the very end they say who

    then is this this is the response to all

    this stuff in verse 41 they're like well

    then who is this who's who who's Jesus

    that this event that just happened

    revealed something about who Jesus is

    and that's the thing that we might miss

    in with that in mind I do want to apply

    to our lives and it will affect our

    allegorical storms I just want to when

    we get to that section towards the end I

    want to talk about how we just are

    cautious about applying it to things

    like that and we do it thoughtfully

    rather than recklessly at least that's

    my understanding of the scriptures so

    mark 4:35 says on that day when evening

    came he said to them let us go over to

    the other side okay this is already

    interesting because the stuff that's

    about to happen is trigger because Jesus

    himself says this is the plan we're

    gonna go and cross over we're gonna go

    to the other

    side the time of days evening this is a

    potentially more dangerous time to get

    up on the Sea of Galilee is in the

    evening time Jesus he's not a fisherman

    but he is in charge right there the

    fisherman they know the Sea of Galilee

    like nobody else does and they know the

    perils of the sea and all that kind of

    thing but it's already inserted because

    Jesus is the one that says hey let's

    let's get in the boats and cross over at

    that time then verse 36 says leaving the
  • 00:04:52
    crowd now I say leaving the crowd let's

    just remind ourselves of what happened

    last week we were going through mark and

    we're looking at Jesus he's preaching

    these parables he's in a boat possibly
  • 00:05:02
    at a place called soars Cove in the Sea
  • 00:05:04
    of Galilee and he's in this boat and
  • 00:05:06
    he's preaching to the crowd that's up on
  • 00:05:08
    the land kind of a natural amphitheater
  • 00:05:11
    in this area of Galilee
  • 00:05:12
    so he's sitting in the boat the crowds
  • 00:05:15
    there he's dismisses the crowd he's like
  • 00:05:17
    now let's just get in the boat and go
  • 00:05:18
    the other way so leaving the crowd they
  • 00:05:21
    took a uh they took him along with them
  • 00:05:23
    in the boat just as he was and other
  • 00:05:25
    boats were with him and here's two
  • 00:05:26
    phrases that I think are interesting in

    verse 36 just as he was why just as he

    was what does this mean just as he was

    because if you take Jesus you better

    wait to these other boats like go

    through this storm they don't seem to be

    around at the end of the storm did they

    just uh you know they like run away at

    some point or did they travel for a bit

    and then go back and there's just no

    details that I see in Scripture to tell

    us what happened to these other boats

    now here's why I find this interesting I

    don't know what happened to these other

    boats you know maybe they just turn back

    but what's interesting about it is it

    reads like a memory it reads like

    someone's recounting this is just what

    happened

    like they're telling the story and

    they're like oh yeah so as he was in the

    boat we took him in that there were

    other boats with them and they don't

    even come back to that to talk about it

    again but when you report memories this

    is what you do - I remember it was a

    Tuesday yeah oh yeah and I had that dumb

    sweater that I got for Christmas on I

    remember that you know and you just have

    these little details you throw in there

    because it's a memory recall thing

    whereas if you're fabricating a story

    those little details tend to be all left

    out and so I think that's just

    interesting in the text of mark because

    it's like a memory a random detail of

    memory retold nothing else about them

    later then in verse 37 it says and there

    arose a fierce Gale of wind and the

    waves were breaking over the boat so

    much that the boat was already filling

    up Jesus himself was in the stern asleep

    on the cushion and they woke him and

    said to him teacher do you not care that

    we are perishing so again we don't know

    it's just the one boat with Jesus and

    the disciples the Sea of Galilee to

    understand this a little bit better

    it is known for perilous sudden storms

    this is actually something that's known

    for especially during certain times of

    year and so there's records even

    recently of boats being lost to sudden

    storms boats of fishermen who know their
  • 00:07:50
    business on the lake you know they know

    what they're doing so they knew the
  • 00:07:54
    risks and again evening trips in
  • 00:07:56
    particular are a little more risky than
  • 00:07:57
    others the Sea of Galilee itself is
  • 00:07:59
    about 700 feet below sea level so it
  • 00:08:01
    sits in like a deep valley the Jordan
  • 00:08:03
    River flows downhill into it it flows
  • 00:08:06
    into the sea at about 700 feet sea level
  • 00:08:08
    the Jordan River flows out of the sea at
  • 00:08:10
    the south point and flows down to the
  • 00:08:11
    Dead Sea which is much even lower it's
  • 00:08:13
    the Sea of Galilee is the lowest
  • 00:08:15
    freshwater body of water on earth the
  • 00:08:18
    Dead Sea is the lowest saltwater body of
  • 00:08:19
    water on earth interestingly but there's
  • 00:08:23
    great fishing there and it's a really
  • 00:08:24
    neat environment you can grow food there
  • 00:08:26
    really easily because of this lower
  • 00:08:27
    altitude and there's just the dynamics
  • 00:08:29
    of the environment however there's these
  • 00:08:31
    mountains around it and there's these
  • 00:08:34
    winds that sometimes come racing down
  • 00:08:36
    the mountains they meet they get the
  • 00:08:37
    cool air coming off the mountains that
  • 00:08:40
    meets the warm air on the on the sea and
  • 00:08:42
    it can create sudden disturbances you
  • 00:08:45
    know weather basically bad weather that

    can be very sudden now what's
  • 00:08:50
    interesting is we actually found a boat
  • 00:08:52
    in
  • 00:08:52
    86 in the Sea of Galilee that dates to
  • 00:08:55
    the time of Christ many of you guys have
  • 00:08:57
    heard of this you've seen the
  • 00:08:58
    archaeology photos of this boat that
  • 00:09:00
    they found it all collapsed out but
  • 00:09:02
    there it was
  • 00:09:02
    and it was about 26 feet long about
  • 00:09:04
    seven feet wide originally not flattened
  • 00:09:07
    out seven people hide but it but it
  • 00:09:09
    would have fit about 15 guys using the
  • 00:09:11
    boat working in the boat that could have
  • 00:09:13
    fit to be traveling around so it fits
  • 00:09:15
    with Jesus and His disciples this may

    have been kind of the style boat that
  • 00:09:18
    they had perhaps this boat dated
  • 00:09:21
    sometime between 120 BC and 40 ad so

    it's somewhere in that region that's

    what they think

    so Jesus's idea let's head out there

    let's go simple trip we're just gonna

    cross over we're just gonna cross over

    the Sea of Galilee made into this

    something that's very dangerous and very

    treacherous and I do feel like we get

    this kind of thing all the time you're

    going about life and you think you're

    just gonna do this simple thing and it's

    not simple and all the sudden it gets
  • 00:09:48
    really bad and really hairy and really

    tough and so there's some application in
  • 00:09:52
    our lives there but what I think is the
  • 00:09:55
    most shocking thing that happens here is

    when they wake up Jesus and they say
  • 00:09:58
    don't you care that we're dying that to
  • 00:10:03
    me is extremely revealing I think the
  • 00:10:05
    words are very important don't you care

    that we're dying I get this and I get
  • 00:10:13
    this in my old life and I think you get
  • 00:10:15
    it in yours when the trials you're going
  • 00:10:17
    through have you asking does God even
  • 00:10:20
    care about what I'm going through this

    is very different than help Lord I need

    help that's a very different kind of

    prayer help I need help that that's

    still a per faith that's still prayer of

    trust but this is more like I'm not even

    sure that you care about me this I think

    why they get rebuked for lack of faith

    this kind of hits hard and this is where

    I think application to all of us is

    pretty relevant you will go through

    times of life where there are struggles

    and there are trials and there are

    hardships and you would you may find

    that your faith in God's character not

    just his power his character his

    goodness his love for you that that is

    challenged because you see yourself in

    the middle of this hardship

    and you feel like he could stop this you

    could do something or not I get this and

    in this there's an application for us
  • 00:11:15
    today for sure I think it's pretty big

    but let's let's come back to that a

    and they send it to Jerusalem resources

    to help the Saints there who were going

    through this hardship and famine why on

    earth didn't they just command it away

    it wouldn't even require faith anymore

    a perfect example of the kind of faith

    they should have had in Daniel chapter 3

    whom we serve is able to deliver us from

    there's that proclamation of faith right

    God will deliver us but they go on but

    even if he doesn't did you ever catch

    that we are not going to serve your gods

    or worship the golden image that you've

    allegory allegory sing the allegories

    storms of life and this does apply to

    that but I think the main points the

    identity of Jesus the secondary point is

    about these trials we go through the

    question though is how far can we take

    this passage in an in the sense of

    allegory is it even fair for me to be

    like their storms equal your storms in

    some sense can I say that and I think we

    can't actually in Isaiah 43 there's an

    example of this you know Israel's gone

    through literal physical storms but

    Isaiah 43 applies it to metaphorical

    storms it's interesting Isaiah 43 verse

    1 and 2 but now thus says the Lord your

    Creator Oh Jacob and he who formed you O

    Israel do not fear for I have redeemed

    you I have called you by name in your

    will be with you and through the rivers

    saying you can apply it in that sense

    simplistic way of God will always stop

    out God's plan for our lives when we say

    he's asleep because he's very calm and

    collected he was such a peaceful person

    and collected and therefore when I'm in

    the middle of stress and trials I should

    always be calm and collected and I just

    known people who sleep when they work

    hard and then they sleep they're out you

    know talking about what they could sleep

    opposite of this person right I just lay

    there not sleep and not sleep in fact I

    started exercising not too long ago and

    it actually helped me sleep so little

    storm because he had peace to give like

    he tapped into some sort of peace thing

    he released peace and the idea is that

    living in a realm of peace and I don't

    know what a realm of pieces or how to

    was asleep that's all you read and now

    he's living in a realm there's a whole

    realm called peace now and you can live

    there somehow and and then you can

    access and I'm like this is all extra

    number one Jesus is divine Jesus is

    magnificence of Jesus and the who he is
