hello and welcome to yet another video
  • 00:00:02
and in this video it is something a bit
  • 00:00:04
different than usual because in this
  • 00:00:05
video I'll be talking about a Sony DSLR
  • 00:00:08
I don't usually talk about Sony dslrs
  • 00:00:10
but after I last made a video about the
  • 00:00:13
a100 I kind of got interested more into
  • 00:00:15
the uh Sony DSLR especially from their
  • 00:00:18
    design language perspective because um
  • 00:00:21
the a100 still kept a lot of the minus
  • 00:00:23
design language and obviously the A200
  • 00:00:27
line of cameras all the way to the 300
  • 00:00:29
by 00 lines and so on and so forth
  • 00:00:31
changed a lot from the original min's uh
  • 00:00:34
design language so yeah but in this
  • 00:00:37
video I still will be discussing about
  • 00:00:39
my opinion based on how I shoot with
  • 00:00:40
this camera in case you might want to
  • 00:00:42
consider getting this camera or just
  • 00:00:44
looking for the uh second or third
  • 00:00:46
opinion about this camera so without
  • 00:00:48
further Ado let's get into the video
  • 00:00:58
    [Music]
  • 00:01:04
so the Sony a230 now this camera came
  • 00:01:07
out way back in around 2009 I believe it
  • 00:01:10
was I can't really remember it precisely
  • 00:01:12
anymore but it's been almost 15 years
  • 00:01:14
since this camera was released and to be
  • 00:01:18
honest if it wasn't a DSLR it doesn't
  • 00:01:21
really feel that old to be honest with
  • 00:01:23
you and you know after using it for a
  • 00:01:25
while it is still a very enjoyable
  • 00:01:27
camera to use I actually forget that
  • 00:01:28
it's an entry level camera to use maybe
  • 00:01:31
it's because a lot of the uh Sony
  • 00:01:33
    mirrorless cameras nowadays still has
  • 00:01:35
little amount of buttons so you still
  • 00:01:36
have to access the menus but anyway
  • 00:01:38
besides that point it is still a very
  • 00:01:40
responsive camera a very fun camera and
  • 00:01:42
also a camera that actually still
  • 00:01:44
delivers a really solid results coming
  • 00:01:46
out of the camera I'm sorry about the
  • 00:01:48
helicopter noise outside I live near the
  • 00:01:51
um Main Street and also there's a
  • 00:01:53
traffic noise as well but anyway back to
  • 00:01:55
the video um this camera you know yes it
  • 00:01:58
is an entry-level camera camera but
  • 00:02:01
there are a lot of things that makes it
  • 00:02:03
a very fun camera to use and it's a
  • 00:02:05
camera that um you know after using the
  • 00:02:08
a100 you can really feel that the uh
  • 00:02:13
design department at Sony at the time I
  • 00:02:16
don't know if you actually call it the
  • 00:02:17
    design department but the department
  • 00:02:18
that designs this camera and also
  • 00:02:19
engineer this camera really want to make
  • 00:02:22
this camera as fun to use as possible
  • 00:02:23
and it really shows when you actually
  • 00:02:25
use it from how it grips to how it
  • 00:02:28
really operates and when you put your
  • 00:02:30
eye up to the viewfinder how it tries to
  • 00:02:32
focus right away though you can actually
  • 00:02:34
turn that feature off um all the way to
  • 00:02:36
just this like the the shutter mechanism
  • 00:02:38
it's very nice and light to listen to
  • 00:02:43
which is actually very very nice as well
  • 00:02:45
anyway um in this video it's not a full
  • 00:02:47
review video just as usual it will just
  • 00:02:49
be my opinion on this camera based on
  • 00:02:52
how I've used it um yes there are flaws
  • 00:02:54
as well despite me liking this camera so
  • 00:02:56
much um and if you're just here to look
  • 00:02:59
at the TAC you're welcome but if you're
  • 00:03:01
here uh just to get second or third
  • 00:03:03
opinion I hope that this video will
  • 00:03:05
actually help you quite a bit so um
  • 00:03:08
let's start first with the first section
  • 00:03:10
which is the um operational side of
  • 00:03:12
things and the usability this camera is
  • 00:03:15
built like well an entry-level camera it
  • 00:03:18
does feel very plasticky despite its um
  • 00:03:21
kind of futuristic design where you know
  • 00:03:23
it has this curves and this cutout
  • 00:03:25
things like that but despite feeling
  • 00:03:27
very plasticky it does still feel a
  • 00:03:29
little bit um secure in a plasticky way
  • 00:03:32
if that makes sense so it doesn't have
  • 00:03:34
this traditional just um very thin grip
  • 00:03:38
that Nikon was offering and Canon was
  • 00:03:40
offering and this really nice thumb grip
  • 00:03:44
here makes it very very secure that
  • 00:03:46
being said because it's a small entry
  • 00:03:47
level tlr it still feels very small and
  • 00:03:50
cramp when you just try to grip the
  • 00:03:51
whole um grip together like this
  • 00:03:54
otherwise everything is as you know what
  • 00:03:57
you expect from an entry-level camera
  • 00:03:59
    it's not where they're sealed um there's
  • 00:04:01
basic d-pad there's only one dial in the
  • 00:04:03
front um but this camera still has very
  • 00:04:06
kind of nice nicely arranged buttons in
  • 00:04:10
the way that all of your essential
  • 00:04:11
buttons are at your fingertips on the
  • 00:04:13
right hand side of the camera so that
  • 00:04:15
means you can actually operate this
  • 00:04:16
camera from just uh one hand in most
  • 00:04:20
situations because the modile is still
  • 00:04:22
on this side um whereas typical
  • 00:04:24
entry-level dslrs at the time would have
  • 00:04:27
um their mode dial on this side of the
  • 00:04:29
camera but it's nice if they actually
  • 00:04:30
give you this function button so you can
  • 00:04:32
actually program it um so it's actually
  • 00:04:35
pretty good and you also have this DC in
  • 00:04:38
um should you want to actually put in
  • 00:04:41
the power uh on the side and onto the
  • 00:04:44
other side there are actually dual
  • 00:04:45
memory card slots on an entry level
  • 00:04:48
camera yes dual entry sorry dual card
  • 00:04:51
slots on an entry level camera uh that
  • 00:04:53
being said you can either pick either
  • 00:04:54
one or the other which is the standard
  • 00:04:57
SD card or the um Sony memory stick uh
  • 00:05:01
card then you have the um HDMI out and
  • 00:05:05
the mini USB connection um the screen
  • 00:05:09
itself if you look to the back it's only
  • 00:05:11
2.7 in but it's actually still very nice
  • 00:05:14
screen the one that you can actually
  • 00:05:15
still viewed during semi bright lighting
  • 00:05:19
situation and it's not too reflective
  • 00:05:21
and it's also detailed enough that you
  • 00:05:23
can actually judge your color and your
  • 00:05:25
exposure to a certain extent so that's
  • 00:05:27
actually very nice um what's not so nice
  • 00:05:30
is actually the uh hot shoe up here it's
  • 00:05:32
a proprietary Sony hot shoe and of
  • 00:05:35
course um it only take certain
  • 00:05:39
    accessories that will actually accept
  • 00:05:41
this hot shoe so you cannot just you
  • 00:05:43
know go and grab a third party flash
  • 00:05:45
from the typical third party brand out
  • 00:05:47
there and just mount it on this camera
  • 00:05:50
it won't work but um on the other hand
  • 00:05:53
this camera has a very nice and Tall
  • 00:05:55
flash away from the lens which means
  • 00:05:58
that there's a very last chance of
  • 00:05:59
getting that red eye effect if you're
  • 00:06:01
shooting a lot of portraits with flashes
  • 00:06:04
especially at night time so that's
  • 00:06:06
pretty nice moving on underneath you'd
  • 00:06:08
find this um battery compartment which
  • 00:06:11
is actually quite nice and far away from
  • 00:06:13
the uh tripod mount which means that if
  • 00:06:15
you're having one of those um bigger
  • 00:06:17
    tripod mount plate mounting underneath
  • 00:06:20
the camera um it won't really get in the
  • 00:06:22
way when you need to change your battery
  • 00:06:24
the battery is somewhat smaller than the
  • 00:06:27
um the one on the a100 so that is a
  • 00:06:30
little bit of bummer but in the same
  • 00:06:32
time because it is a DSLR that requires
  • 00:06:34
less and there's no live view feature in
  • 00:06:36
here uh this one tiny letal battery
  • 00:06:39
actually last for a long time so this
  • 00:06:42
battery has lasted for quite a long time
  • 00:06:44
in my usage I think the last I charged
  • 00:06:47
it was quite a few days ago almost a
  • 00:06:49
week ago at this point so yeah and it's
  • 00:06:51
only been one bar down and to be honest
  • 00:06:53
I love this camera so much that I've
  • 00:06:55
been taking it out too many places that
  • 00:06:57
I go to and I really enjoy using this
  • 00:06:59
camera and shooting with it um so much
  • 00:07:02
so um and talking about using this
  • 00:07:04
camera has a very nice and easy menu
  • 00:07:07
system unlike their A7 line of cameras
  • 00:07:12
a6000 line of cameras I understand those
  • 00:07:14
cameras has a lot of features but at
  • 00:07:16
    least some organizing some organization
  • 00:07:18
work can actually go into those cameras
  • 00:07:20
as well but no but on this camera
  • 00:07:22
everything is very nice to use very
  • 00:07:24
intuitive everything is where you need
  • 00:07:26
it um or where you expect it to be
  • 00:07:29
things like that and if you're a
  • 00:07:31
    beginner looking into learning about
  • 00:07:33
    photography there's also a nice
  • 00:07:35
graphical design at the home screen just
  • 00:07:37
for you to actually see which settings
  • 00:07:39
does which like what effect has on which
  • 00:07:42
kind of subjects or if you set this
  • 00:07:44
value how will affect your subject
  • 00:07:47
things like that or which scenario it
  • 00:07:49
could potentially be used in for so yeah
  • 00:07:53
um this camera despite having a very
  • 00:07:55
fast AF speed it actually shoots only at
  • 00:07:58
2.5 2 5 frames per second um which is
  • 00:08:02
still okay for today's standards if
  • 00:08:05
you're just doing a general purpose of
  • 00:08:06
photography of course it doesn't you
  • 00:08:08
know win any awards but to be honest if
  • 00:08:11
you're just like shooting um basic food
  • 00:08:13
    photography basic travel photography
  • 00:08:15
    basic um portrait basic landscape
  • 00:08:18
photography you don't really need more
  • 00:08:19
than that to be realistic with you and
  • 00:08:23
um talking about frames per second the
  • 00:08:25
shutters sound on this camera is really
  • 00:08:26
    nice
  • 00:08:32
yeah it's not too loud like Canon and
  • 00:08:36
Nikon dslrs at the time um and there's
  • 00:08:38
that very nice kind of tactile feedback
  • 00:08:41
you get from the mirror of course you
  • 00:08:43
get that but like um it's very nice and
  • 00:08:45
soft as well so that's something that I
  • 00:08:47
really like overall I'm having a much
  • 00:08:48
more positive um impression of this
  • 00:08:52
camera compared to the a100 of course
  • 00:08:55
    that's a completely different beast at a
  • 00:08:56
much older age as well but this camera
  • 00:09:00
definitely fixed a lot of things that
  • 00:09:02
this camera um had problems with and
  • 00:09:06
when you're focusing with vertical lines
  • 00:09:08
it will or actually try to focus
  • 00:09:10
    everything vertically this camera
  • 00:09:12
doesn't struggle so a lot of cameras a
  • 00:09:14
lot of entry level cameras at that time
  • 00:09:16
    definitely struggled um photographing a
  • 00:09:18
lot of things vertically because they
  • 00:09:20
don't have an a cross type sensor um
  • 00:09:22
autofocusing system I don't think this
  • 00:09:25
actually has a you know sophisticated um
  • 00:09:28
    cross cross type sensor autofocusing
  • 00:09:30
system either but at least it deals much
  • 00:09:33
better than most entry-level cameras at
  • 00:09:35
that time from other manufactures so
  • 00:09:38
that is something that I'm really quite
  • 00:09:40
um happy about uh simply because it just
  • 00:09:43
locks on to a lot of things very quickly
  • 00:09:45
and also very accurately unless if
  • 00:09:47
you're using the 50 mm f1.8 of course
  • 00:09:50
because it is a larger aperture but if
  • 00:09:51
you're just using the standard lens
  • 00:09:53
everything just um gets locked into um
  • 00:09:56
focus really really quickly so that's
  • 00:09:58
pretty good and of course being Sony it
  • 00:10:00
does accept all of the amount from
  • 00:10:02
minala as well because this is a minala
  • 00:10:05
lens um the Mina amount uh yeah oh and
  • 00:10:09
one thing about this lens just real
  • 00:10:11
quick is I like how cute this is cuz um
  • 00:10:15
okay just cut my nails but you can
  • 00:10:16
actually pop this out as a hood like I
  • 00:10:19
don't know if you see it yeah that is
  • 00:10:21
the lens Hood itself and then to not use
  • 00:10:23
it collapse it back there lens hood back
  • 00:10:26
in so yeah there is that um
  • 00:10:30
otherwise there's not really much to say
  • 00:10:31
there is the eye sensor here that
  • 00:10:33
activates like on default activates the
  • 00:10:36
autofocusing system when you put your
  • 00:10:37
eyes up to the eye up to up to the
  • 00:10:40
viewfinder um sorry my tongue is just
  • 00:10:44
twisting quite a bit it's a really hot
  • 00:10:46
day today um and then at the back here
  • 00:10:48
you find this LCD screen that auto
  • 00:10:51
rotates depending on which rotation of
  • 00:10:53
the camera you have it in so that's
  • 00:10:55
actually quite neat but yeah otherwise
  • 00:10:58
there's not really much else to add to
  • 00:11:00
this camera only shoots up to 4,000 of a
  • 00:11:03
second if you're interested um which if
  • 00:11:05
you're shooting a lot in day like bright
  • 00:11:08
daylight condition with f1.8 f1.4 lenses
  • 00:11:11
that might not be so ideal but for most
  • 00:11:14
you know F scenarios it is perfectly
  • 00:11:16
okay to have only 4,000th of a second
  • 00:11:19
shutter speed and also this camera
  • 00:11:22
doesn't have any Wi-Fi Bluetooth NFC
  • 00:11:25
what have you um it is an older camera
  • 00:11:28
but of course just like with any older
  • 00:11:29
dslrs you can always add those II um SD
  • 00:11:33
cards into the camera assuming it's
  • 00:11:35
still available in your Market um if not
  • 00:11:37
brand new then used and of course get a
  • 00:11:40
uh the pictures on your smart devices
  • 00:11:43
    automatically transferred there so there
  • 00:11:46
is that um otherwise if you're into
  • 00:11:49
self-timer this camera can do self timer
  • 00:11:52
between two or 10 seconds so yeah that's
  • 00:11:56
pretty much it um anyway now moving on
  • 00:11:59
to the image quality section the camera
  • 00:12:02
    actually produce really nice image
  • 00:12:03
quality um yes it's only 10 megapixels
  • 00:12:06
but to be honest with you the 10
  • 00:12:07
    megapixels is completely fine for
  • 00:12:09
    today's standards if you're only
  • 00:12:11
uploading it to Instagram Facebook other
  • 00:12:14
    social media platforms they generally
  • 00:12:17
don't use over 2 megapixels um on the
  • 00:12:19
images so 10 will leave you a lot of
  • 00:12:22
room to crop and also D noise and
  • 00:12:24
talking about D noise um this camera I
  • 00:12:27
I'm comfortable shooting it up to ISO
  • 00:12:30
800 which actually says a lot because um
  • 00:12:33
at the uh time period of when this
  • 00:12:35
camera was released uh I wouldn't be
  • 00:12:37
more confident than ISO 400 or 200 on
  • 00:12:41
other uh entrylevel dslrs um whether
  • 00:12:46
it's Canon or Nikon maybe 400 uh mainly
  • 00:12:50
but not up to 800 but on this camera yes
  • 00:12:53
the noise already starts to show at 800
  • 00:12:55
but at least um it's still acceptable if
  • 00:12:58
you're only shooting let's say your
  • 00:13:00
family members or just shooting um
  • 00:13:02
personal events here and there nothing
  • 00:13:04
professional of course um if it's
  • 00:13:06
professional I would still keep it
  • 00:13:08
around 400 or lower but if it's
  • 00:13:10
    nonprofessional then it's 800 then it's
  • 00:13:12
totally fine on this particular camera
  • 00:13:14
and 10 megapixels again is quite nice
  • 00:13:16
the color depth is quite nice the color
  • 00:13:18
signs is quite nice I like it much more
  • 00:13:20
than the uh a6000 line of cameras well
  • 00:13:25
yeah those cameras has much more robust
  • 00:13:28
files has much more detail files but in
  • 00:13:31
terms of color signs I really love the
  • 00:13:34
color signs out of this camera and if
  • 00:13:35
you're shooting raw um the raw files
  • 00:13:38
though not as robust as modern cameras
  • 00:13:41
of course but it is still robust enough
  • 00:13:43
to do some basic retouching basic
  • 00:13:46
    manipulation Basics adjustments so it's
  • 00:13:48
actually still quite nice you can just
  • 00:13:50
put it into your Lightroom and just
  • 00:13:51
apply some presets or adjust the
  • 00:13:54
brightness contrast um what have you the
  • 00:13:57
whites the blacks the uh the um
  • 00:13:59
individual color tones to a certain
  • 00:14:01
    extent before you actually start
  • 00:14:03
breaking the image apart so yeah it's
  • 00:14:07
quite nice seeing how robust the images
  • 00:14:09
out of this camera is especially for the
  • 00:14:11
age and for the price that you can
  • 00:14:12
actually get nowadays but of course
  • 00:14:14
being an old camera always always
  • 00:14:16
remember that watch out for those Moran
  • 00:14:19
iling patterns because it will show up
  • 00:14:21
nowhere near as much as let's say
  • 00:14:24
cameras from Nikon and Canon at the time
  • 00:14:25
for their super entrylevel camera um
  • 00:14:28
line of cameras back then but it will
  • 00:14:30
show up um eventually so just be careful
  • 00:14:33
when shooting with pine sorry with fine
  • 00:14:36
patterns um yeah otherwise um that's
  • 00:14:40
pretty much it for the image quality
  • 00:14:42
it's very nice it has very nice color
  • 00:14:44
signs very nice colored depth very nice
  • 00:14:46
skin tones as well so yeah now over onto
  • 00:14:49
the um conclusion this camera overall
  • 00:14:53
personally I really had a lot of fun
  • 00:14:55
using this camera it's a camera that
  • 00:14:58
despite being an L camera it's a camera
  • 00:15:00
that I can only just you know point a
  • 00:15:02
camera and then it will shoot whatever I
  • 00:15:03
wanted to shoot uh within just matter of
  • 00:15:06
seconds it is still quite fast for an
  • 00:15:08
    entry-level camera and very responsive
  • 00:15:11
and reliable as well so that's actually
  • 00:15:13
pretty good yes there are floss that I
  • 00:15:15
don't really like for example this
  • 00:15:17
viewfinder it's only 95% coverage and of
  • 00:15:21
course um it's not big and bright if
  • 00:15:23
you're using a lot of manual glass for
  • 00:15:25
example or plan to use a lot of them I
  • 00:15:28
don't recommend using this uh particular
  • 00:15:30
viewfinder simply because of um how
  • 00:15:33
small and very unclear it is compared to
  • 00:15:37
    the uh other
  • 00:15:39
entry sorry compared to the other entry
  • 00:15:42
level cameras but otherwise there are
  • 00:15:45
features in this camera especially for
  • 00:15:47
the price point that you don't really
  • 00:15:48
find in many other uh entry-level DSLR
  • 00:15:52
such as the uh in body image
  • 00:15:53
stabilization or the um Sony calls it
  • 00:15:56
the study shot inside yeah and it really
  • 00:15:59
helps a lot when you're shooting at
  • 00:16:00
night for example and even though the uh
  • 00:16:04
sensor um steud shot or ibys doesn't
  • 00:16:09
work as effectively as more modern
  • 00:16:12
cameras or even cameras from 6 seven
  • 00:16:14
years ago uh it is still quite effective
  • 00:16:17
enough if you have very steady hand at
  • 00:16:19
night to actually get away with not
  • 00:16:21
having a tripod so that is actually
  • 00:16:23
quite nice there are I believe nine
  • 00:16:25
autofocusing points in here yep there
  • 00:16:27
are nine autofocusing point points in
  • 00:16:29
there which to be honest it does the job
  • 00:16:33
like it gets the job done because it
  • 00:16:35
still spreads far enough that it's um a
  • 00:16:39
little bit further out than the rule of
  • 00:16:40
third so you still can comfortably in
  • 00:16:43
general field of Photography uh frame
  • 00:16:46
your images properly so I have no
  • 00:16:49
    complaints about the autofocusing points
  • 00:16:51
whatsoever in fact um I still love my 5D
  • 00:16:54
    Mark I's nine autofocusing points
  • 00:16:57
despite having the R5 right there um so
  • 00:17:01
yeah I have high standards when it comes
  • 00:17:03
to accuracy but I don't have high
  • 00:17:05
standards when it comes to let's say how
  • 00:17:07
many points they are as long as if it's
  • 00:17:09
accurate which in this case this camera
  • 00:17:11
is quite accurate at focusing then it's
  • 00:17:14
totally okay but yeah otherwise one last
  • 00:17:17
point that I would like to actually
  • 00:17:18
    mention that I actually mentioned
  • 00:17:20
earlier in the video already but I have
  • 00:17:21
to stress this um as well that this grip
  • 00:17:25
here that Sony has it's either you love
  • 00:17:28
it you hate it I'm not on the loving it
  • 00:17:30
side in fact I quite hate it but it's
  • 00:17:32
actually feels very secure in the same
  • 00:17:35
time I just don't like how it's designed
  • 00:17:37
um because it automat automatically just
  • 00:17:40
puts my hand um crammed together like
  • 00:17:42
this but in the same time because it
  • 00:17:43
forces my hand to cramp in together like
  • 00:17:45
this with a very nice secure thumb rest
  • 00:17:48
here um or thumb grip there it's it's
  • 00:17:52
it's a very secure feeling in the same
  • 00:17:53
time which is something that's very
  • 00:17:54
contradicting but I quite like it um but
  • 00:17:58
but in the same time which is something
  • 00:18:01
very contradicting but somehow I both
  • 00:18:04
hate it and feel secure about it uh but
  • 00:18:07
yeah oh one more thing if you're getting
  • 00:18:11
these old dslrs try not to put in you
  • 00:18:13
know super fast or higher capacity cards
  • 00:18:16
this is the 32 gig um SD card and you
  • 00:18:20
know it's it's it's okay but the slrs
  • 00:18:24
back then tend not to have the
  • 00:18:26
technology to accept super large and
  • 00:18:29
fast SD cards that we have today so yeah
  • 00:18:33
that's the downside but also an upside
  • 00:18:35
in the same time that you don't have to
  • 00:18:36
invest a lot in SD cards but yeah anyway
  • 00:18:38
I'm going off track I do hope that you
  • 00:18:40
find this video somewhat useful um if
  • 00:18:42

  • 00:18:44
