00:00:00
hi there welcome to the north Devon
00:00:03
Coastline just overlooking the town of
00:00:04
wulakum it's a it's a beautiful evening
00:00:06
a lot of surfers out today and I've just
00:00:08
gone for a little quick ride out this
00:00:10
afternoon uh just uh to do a 5 000 mile
00:00:13
feedback on the motor marine Escape I
00:00:17
bought this bike mainly because it was
00:00:18
something different I'd been running the
00:00:21
the motor guzzy v85 TT for a few years I
00:00:24
bought that bike to do the um
00:00:27
America trip got a vanco capacity what
00:00:29
the Sound Works like but I bought that
00:00:31
bike to the American trip of 2020 that
00:00:33
was canceled because of covid I bought
00:00:35
the guzikus of the cruise control uh the
00:00:37
shaft drive
00:00:38
and the large capacity 23 liter fuel
00:00:40
tank so I found in the UK I just didn't
00:00:43
wasn't using those virtues I wasn't
00:00:45
using it enough and I didn't quite gel
00:00:46
with the bike enough to keep it so uh
00:00:49
when Bennett motorhome did me a good
00:00:51
door offered me a good deal on a motor
00:00:53
marine a brand new one just as they come
00:00:55
out I thought I'll give it a go you know
00:00:57
I like trying something different which
00:00:58
I suppose when you're running tours or
00:01:00
you need reliabilities but it's a bit of
00:01:01
a gamble because if something's not
00:01:03
reliable then you're in trouble
00:01:05
the motor really over 5000 miles has
00:01:07
given me no problems whatsoever
00:01:09
mechanically the only thing has been uh
00:01:10
the head of a wing mirror has broke off
00:01:13
I mean I've got the helmet on top of a
00:01:15
wing mirror now and I think that's
00:01:16
probably what did it and I've simply
00:01:19
replaced it in the short term with a
00:01:20
Himalayan uh Wing mirror but otherwise
00:01:22
everything seems to be lasting well on
00:01:24
the bike I like the fact that there's no
00:01:26
paint tarnishing there's no rubbing on
00:01:28
the tank there's no rubbing down here
00:01:30
where the boot goes the spokes look to
00:01:32
be stainless steel which I think is a
00:01:34
really nice touch you know given the
00:01:35
issue that Honduran with the Africa
00:01:37
twins smokes
00:01:38
um
00:01:39
uh because they were nickel plated steel
00:01:41
and tended to corrode as do the V stroms
00:01:44
and and the teneres and so many other of
00:01:46
the Japanese bikes are clearly using
00:01:48
slightly lackluster quality or
00:01:51
compromise quality spokes the fact that
00:01:53
that's what we call a budget bike uses
00:01:55
good quality spokes I think it's quite a
00:01:57
nice thing also the fact that the
00:01:58
tubular spokes for me as a running Road
00:02:01
tours I think that's you know to have uh
00:02:04
tube tires on a road bike I think is is
00:02:07
a big issue when you get a puncture you
00:02:09
know the new Trans up yeah it's a great
00:02:11
bike same with the V-Strom 800 great
00:02:13
bikes but they're tubed bite with no
00:02:16
Center stand now if you don't option the
00:02:18
center stand or know how to fix a
00:02:20
puncture and get the tire off off a rim
00:02:22
and put a new tube in you really are
00:02:24
stuck then obviously you've got the
00:02:25
instant seal kits you know the foam and
00:02:28
things but if that doesn't work you
00:02:29
really are a recovery job where with a
00:02:32
tube tire just put a plug in it and Away
00:02:34
you go so that was a nice touch
00:02:37
I guess what one of the big question
00:02:39
marks over the meridi is the fact it's
00:02:41
only got 59 horsepower and it weighs on
00:02:43
my scales about 240 kilos that's with
00:02:45
the engine goes and the rear rack on
00:02:48
their spec sheets there's about 218 but
00:02:49
I've kind of started to take
00:02:51
manufacturers claim weights with a large
00:02:53
pinch of salt and also to me it's a very
00:02:55
one dimensional figure you know weight
00:02:58
of a bike well where does the weight sit
00:03:00
in the bar you know where is it balanced
00:03:02
how does it feel to move and Pull and
00:03:04
push around how does it feel to sit on
00:03:05
it and that's far more important and for
00:03:08
me this feels Slimmer and more
00:03:09
manageable than the guzzy which on paper
00:03:11
were largely the same spec spec sheet
00:03:14
weight so I think rather than just go
00:03:16
just grab at the the what the spec sheet
00:03:19
wait for a bite you've got to go and sit
00:03:21
on it you've got to go and feel it
00:03:22
you've got to see how Slender the the
00:03:23
seat is and how far down to the floor it
00:03:25
is again seat height towels only half a
00:03:28
story because it again depends on how
00:03:29
wide the seat is
00:03:31
um and so I think this judgment by
00:03:33
especially certainly when it comes to
00:03:34
whey is just a waste of time so for me
00:03:37
this is it's it's not light but it's not
00:03:40
heavy it's manageable
00:03:42
um it's got a relatively reasonable seat
00:03:44
height I can get a good foot down a good
00:03:46
solid foot down
00:03:48
and so for me it fits me quite nicely it
00:03:50
doesn't feel as big as my gs12 it
00:03:52
doesn't feel as heavy as the guzzy it
00:03:55
just feels like a bike that's
00:03:57
you know Well Suited well sized for
00:03:59
touring screen is pretty decent on it
00:04:02
it's not a big broad screen but it seems
00:04:04
to work cutting off all the the buffets
00:04:06
in so I can ride a good Motorway speed
00:04:08
with the visor up even it just seems to
00:04:11
give me give me a lot of face protection
00:04:13
uh cruising speed on these you know I
00:04:16
saw clean speed top speed of 106 miles
00:04:18
an hour but when I was running late to
00:04:19
get to Wales one morning very early on
00:04:21
Sunday morning you know this would sit
00:04:23
at 100 miles an hour all day long it was
00:04:25
as smooth and refined at that speed as
00:04:27
it was at 70. so can you Tour on a
00:04:31
mid-sized bike yes no problem at all
00:04:33
could you do it two up yes no problem at
00:04:35
all and I think what's good about the
00:04:36
motor really is the handling it's just
00:04:38
got a really nice chassis it's a versus
00:04:41
650 er5 derived at chassis as is the
00:04:44
engine but they've sort of fitted it
00:04:46
with a mazaki front fork which works
00:04:48
really well it's fully adjustable which
00:04:49
again is really good for this kind of
00:04:51
price point uh it's just it just works
00:04:54
on the road KYB adjustable rear shock 19
00:04:57
inch from 17 inch rear just seems to be
00:04:59
a really nice package for a bike to
00:05:02
create a bike that sits well on the road
00:05:04
Corners really neatly really crisply and
00:05:07
allows you to make the most of that 59
00:05:09
brake horsepower in and in and through
00:05:11
the corners and out of the corners so
00:05:13
you can be winding on the power through
00:05:15
the corners where somebody or maybe a
00:05:17
faster bike is still waiting waiting
00:05:19
waiting power out but by the time
00:05:20
they've got their power on you're
00:05:22
already halfway down the straight so the
00:05:24
chassis on this
00:05:25
is really good and for me is it a slow
00:05:28
bike well it's not a fast bike it's not
00:05:30
a fast engine but you can ride it
00:05:31
quickly and that probably matters more
00:05:34
than having a stocking engine having a
00:05:35
nice chassis for me more important than
00:05:37
the engine but so it kind of eats to
00:05:40
their own you know everyone's going to
00:05:40
have a different ingredient for what
00:05:42
makes them their perfect buy would I
00:05:45
like a bit more power yes would have
00:05:47
like a bit more refinement from the
00:05:48
engine yes it's kind of a raspy strain
00:05:51
it's only took a few thousand miles to
00:05:52
bet it in you know it's not it's not a
00:05:55
charismatic engine I rode it back to
00:05:57
back with a V-Strom 650 up in the
00:05:59
highlands and the the V-Strom just felt
00:06:00
smoother more tractable a little bit
00:06:03
stronger and it made this engine feel a
00:06:06
little bit rough by comparison equally
00:06:09
we both agreed me and the owner of the
00:06:11
V-Strom the riding position on this was
00:06:13
was formed better and more spacious more
00:06:15
upright more room in the leg broader
00:06:18
bars just add a more mature grown-up
00:06:22
riding style like an adventure bike
00:06:24
style riding position and we both
00:06:26
preferred that about it if we could put
00:06:28
the V-Strom engine in this I think
00:06:29
therefore you'd have a great package
00:06:31
what I also like about the V-Strom and I
00:06:32
don't quite know how they've done it
00:06:33
because it's essentially a Touring bike
00:06:35
made to look adventury but it's got a
00:06:38
really nice I can't really stand too far
00:06:40
because I'm on a camber it's got a
00:06:41
really nice standing up position
00:06:44
good width bars good room in the leg it
00:06:46
just all feels really natural it falls
00:06:47
naturally to hand so you can ride stood
00:06:50
up on this therefore off-road quite
00:06:51
nicely and I've took it around sweet
00:06:53
lamb The Adventure Academy up in mid
00:06:55
Wales and it actually didn't really did
00:06:57
really well to a point 145 mil of rear
00:07:01
traveling I think 165 or 175 on the
00:07:03
front so not a huge amount of suspension
00:07:06
travel which means it's good it's good
00:07:08
to a point and then beyond that point
00:07:09
it's out of its depth now equally
00:07:11
there's a lot of plastic uh the tires
00:07:14
are compromised by being more a road
00:07:16
biased Tire the Pirelli Str uh rally
00:07:19
tire is really good I've really enjoyed
00:07:21
it as a Road tire but it's not a great
00:07:22
off-road tie uh and it it mirrors the
00:07:25
bike it will go off-road but it's not
00:07:27
his natural environment and I didn't buy
00:07:29
it for that purpose I think a Himalayan
00:07:31
would run rings around it at a CRF 300
00:07:33
rally would run two rings around it so
00:07:36
you know I don't personally think
00:07:38
anybody's buying these kind of bikes to
00:07:39
ride them off-road anyway a small small
00:07:42
minority but you know you can't can't
00:07:44
you can't design a bike around there
00:07:47
um so all in all five thousand miles I
00:07:49
fitted the engine guards I did have the
00:07:51
upper guards but took those off because
00:07:52
I thought they looked a bit cumbersome
00:07:53
and I was convinced well I was I was
00:07:56
probably suspicious that if you did have
00:07:58
an impact it would actually just press
00:08:00
them in and correct the Plastics anyway
00:08:01
so better off without
00:08:03
and then the Shad paleo frames which I
00:08:05
threw some Adventure spec Maggie down
00:08:07
three panias over for the Scotland trip
00:08:09
which are absolutely fine for six and
00:08:11
seven days but then on the long Motorway
00:08:13
stint back down the heat of the exhaust
00:08:15
uh melted through the pannier and
00:08:17
through an expensive laptop so Lessons
00:08:20
Learned there a little bit hard luggage
00:08:22
or maybe those hard backed soft panniers
00:08:25
that lone Rider Boomer and actually Shad
00:08:28
Shad themselves do so
00:08:32
a lesson to learn there but as again as
00:08:35
a Touring bike I think it works well
00:08:36
it's got a conversation good screen good
00:08:39
right good all-day riding position it's
00:08:41
got enough power and performance to make
00:08:44
a good Pace uh there's not a lot of
00:08:45
power in
00:08:47
um in reserve but you know
00:08:50
um you've got to weigh out what you need
00:08:51
in life
00:08:52
that's about it 5 000 miles am I happy
00:08:54
with it yes do I regret buying it no uh
00:08:57
will I keep it for a bit longer probably
00:08:59
yes uh should you buy one well it's a
00:09:02
difficult Market out there's lots of
00:09:04
good bikes to buy you know 10 arrays
00:09:07
yeah versus turns out V-Strom there's
00:09:11
there's NC 750 even
00:09:13
uh trying the 660. you know so many good
00:09:17
mid-size Adventure touring bikes and I
00:09:20
think most Marini's job now really the
00:09:23
bike is there the bike is fine it could
00:09:25
be improved you know the engine could be
00:09:26
refined a bit more it could give a bit
00:09:27
more power it could give a little less
00:09:29
engine heat which is a bit of an issue I
00:09:31
think
00:09:32
um you know the ways they could fine
00:09:33
tune the bike but the product is pretty
00:09:35
good the way that the Chinese are able
00:09:37
to copy now quite successfully the
00:09:40
Japanese uh he means that the product
00:09:43
there's no problem with the product it's
00:09:44
everything else that comes with a bike
00:09:46
I.E the dealerships the the marketing
00:09:49
the attendants and bike shows you know
00:09:50
motor marine weren't at motorcycle live
00:09:52
and I think that's a bigger Mission
00:09:53
you're trying to get people to get
00:09:54
behind the brand to buy the buyers and
00:09:56
to not have to not have your bike at a
00:09:58
show as big as the NEC you know you only
00:10:02
get one shot at launching a bike before
00:10:03
it fades away and there's a new bite
00:10:05
through so yeah I should you buy one
00:10:08
well are you risk averse are you do you
00:10:11
like a bike that you know is going to
00:10:12
have a certain route cell value the part
00:10:15
supply and everything else that goes
00:10:17
with buying an established brand well if
00:10:19
you're that kind of person then no don't
00:10:20
buy one of these buy something buy
00:10:22
versus 650. but if you want something
00:10:24
different you know if you want something
00:10:26
that looks quite funky I really like the
00:10:28
look of it that rides well that gets a
00:10:31
lot of quite a lot of attention people
00:10:32
are curious but the Marine is a good
00:10:35
bite I probably buy the cast aluminum
00:10:37
wheel bike for 7 000 because again it's
00:10:40
not an off-road bike I don't need spoke
00:10:42
wheels
00:10:44
that's it I think that's my review done
00:10:45
I don't think I've got anything else to
00:10:47
say if 5000 miles
00:10:50
got some traffic how does she look
00:10:55
now we hit record yes I have it record
00:10:57
handsome boy let me show you around so
00:10:59
there's welcome behind and if we pan
00:11:01
around
00:11:02
we've got C
00:11:06
eat we should see Lundy Island out there
00:11:07
somewhere just in the clouds along the
00:11:09
island out there
00:11:12
sorry I've got terrible Panic actually
00:11:14
having a surface down there
00:11:16
and it goes out
00:11:18
the sun is coming down
00:11:24
so yeah I'm just going to point you a
00:11:25
few details on the bike before I pack up
00:11:28
and head home
00:11:30
as I say get the quality I'm actually
00:11:32
wait a second one second give me one
00:11:34
second
00:11:38
yeah the quality of everything seems
00:11:40
pretty good I don't see any signs of
00:11:41
corrosion or paintware the guzzy you
00:11:43
know the engine paint was delacquering
00:11:46
after a few thousand miles uh at the
00:11:48
front of the engine because it got a lot
00:11:49
of stone chips uh this doesn't seem to
00:11:52
be any tarnishing no paint rub on the on
00:11:55
where the knees go
00:11:56
nothing there on the tank where the tank
00:11:58
bag's been a little bit on the back
00:12:00
where the straps have been but nothing
00:12:02
too bad
00:12:04
you can see the issue with the exhaust
00:12:05
it's mid mid exit mid height mid length
00:12:09
so for to set a soft luggage over that
00:12:12
and not feel the heat from the exhaust
00:12:14
is difficult so it's something to watch
00:12:16
because it can catch you out it's
00:12:18
embarrassing when it happens and it's
00:12:20
easy to blame the the product as I I
00:12:22
guess I did I thought
00:12:23
you know uh maybe the patties could be
00:12:25
improved but
00:12:27
it's difficult you know if it's not a
00:12:29
good combination of buy company as it is
00:12:31
difficult
00:12:32
exposed header pipes there you can get
00:12:34
an aluminum sump guard that's probably
00:12:36
something to look for you know look to
00:12:38
in the future
00:12:39
the brakes of brembos they're okay you
00:12:42
know I've had somebody ride it who owns
00:12:44
a KTM 890 Aventura and his Brembo brakes
00:12:47
are four part and he's a twin part and
00:12:49
the the brakes on that advent that KTM
00:12:51
are fantastic and these are okay
00:12:54
they do the job I think it's what you
00:12:55
get used to again those Pirellis are a
00:12:57
good Tire Pirelli also it turns out
00:13:00
around by China as well so very
00:13:02
difficult these days to differentiate
00:13:03
between what's made in China and what's
00:13:07
not I think China invests the um supply
00:13:11
chain of motorcycling largely by the
00:13:14
design of the uh European and Japanese
00:13:16
manufacturers it they are with us
00:13:19
whether we like it or not and it comes
00:13:21
down to your choice as to whether you
00:13:23
buy a bike that is entirely built in
00:13:25
Chinese or by a bike that has components
00:13:28
from China
00:13:29
I don't know if I've already mentioned
00:13:31
but CF Moto the Chinese company built
00:13:34
this engine but they also build the KTM
00:13:36
890 engine and the 790 engine so it's
00:13:39
not like the stealing technology anymore
00:13:40
it's uh here's the European Brands going
00:13:43
to the Chinese to get them to build the
00:13:44
engines and then obviously it's part of
00:13:46
that agreement the Chinese can use the
00:13:47
engine themselves yeah it's murky it's
00:13:50
difficult politics politics and
00:13:52
everything else
00:13:54
so I said we're gonna head home uh I
00:13:57
hope that was kind of useful if you've
00:13:58
got any questions on them really just
00:13:59
you know just ask in the comments if you
00:14:01
own one let me know how you're getting
00:14:03
on with it
00:14:04
um if you thought about one and bought
00:14:06
something else let me know what you
00:14:07
bought and why why you didn't go for the
00:14:09
Marine in the end
00:14:10
so that's it goodbye Sunset see you
00:14:13
tomorrow
