- 00:03:17his parents both struggled with
- 00:03:19substance use and eventually it got so
- 00:03:21bad they were unable to care for their
- 00:03:23children in early 2018 the Indiana
- 00:03:25Department of children's services placed
- 00:03:27Dakota and his sister in foster care for

- 00:04:08always with their matching grins beaming
- 00:04:10at the camera while in her care Dakota
- 00:04:13and his sister were required by DCS to
- 00:04:15go to therapy twice a week they were
- 00:04:17still having scheduled visits with their
- 00:04:18parents twice a week as well all of
- 00:04:21these appointments on top of the time
- 00:04:22they spend at school she said they
- 00:04:24didn't have time to be children when
- 00:04:26Anna mentioned Dakota was struggling
- 00:04:28with behavioral issues at school the
- 00:04:30department wanted to add even more
- 00:04:31therapy sessions she didn't think making
- 00:04:34their schedule even more stressful would
- 00:04:36help but she never got a chance to
- 00:04:38explain why after almost a year in her
- 00:04:40custody DCS had the children removed
- 00:04:42from her care and didn't even give her a
- 00:04:44reason as to why they would do that Anna
- 00:04:47said the judge ruled a removal from Care
- 00:04:49on behalf of DCs and I never had the
- 00:04:51chance to speak to the judge to tell
- 00:04:53them I didn't want the kids to have more
- 00:04:54therapy at one point he lived with his
- 00:04:57grandmother Melissa maor but the
- 00:04:58department wouldn't let him stay with
- 00:05:00her either she said Levi was never
- 00:05:03traumatized until he got in the system
- 00:05:05one day he woke up and nobody he loved
- 00:05:07was around him no more he was only 5
- 00:05:10years old the next 5 years Melissa Anna
- 00:05:13and other family members fought hard to
- 00:05:15get Dakota and his sister back but they
- 00:05:17had lost them to a system that as we
- 00:05:19know all too often doesn't seem to have
- 00:05:21the children's best interest at heart
- 00:05:24explaining the situation Anna said our
- 00:05:26family had him and his sister taken from
- 00:05:28us by the department of Children and
- 00:05:30Family Services back in 2019 for reasons
- 00:05:32we don't understand and weren't in our
- 00:05:34control him and his sister were kept
- 00:05:36from us despite many and multiple
- 00:05:38efforts to get them back there wasn't a
- 00:05:41day that went by when Levi and his
- 00:05:43sister weren't on our minds and in our
- 00:05:45hearts sometime around mid 2019 before
- 00:05:48his sixth birthday in October Dakota and
- 00:05:51his sister were placed with new foster
- 00:05:53parents in Hammond Indiana their Foster
- 00:05:56father Hayden hetel said it was a
- 00:05:59difficult but also so very happy time he
- 00:06:01was only 21 years old when he and his
- 00:06:03girlfriend Melena Blanchard became
- 00:06:05firsttime parents to 5-year-old Dakota
- 00:06:08and his four-year-old sister Melena said
- 00:06:11Dakota was always hopeful no matter how
- 00:06:13much she struggled she said he was just
- 00:06:16a baby but his personality showed from
- 00:06:19the day we got him even with all the
- 00:06:21trauma he'd been through he still
- 00:06:23managed to see the good in things he was
- 00:06:26troubled he was hurt but his soul was be
- 00:06:29beautiful this stand and I decided I
- 00:06:32know I should make another stand so I
- 00:06:34made he
- 00:06:36does I made the other stand over here
- 00:06:38and it perfectly fits and I even this is
- 00:06:42this is not a block this is not a block
- 00:06:44right block what is
- 00:06:47that Bella
- 00:06:50production Hayden said of the time by no
- 00:06:53means was being a parent easy especially
- 00:06:56at 21 starting with a four and
- 00:06:58five-year-olds but parenting is never
- 00:07:00easy and Hayden said Dakota never went
- 00:07:03to bed without asking for a hug and kiss
- 00:07:05no matter how bad it was we never went
- 00:07:08to bed angry or upset because we would
- 00:07:10reset the next morning and go to bed at
- 00:07:12least knowing we both still loved each
- 00:07:14other Hayden said Dakota struggled with
- 00:07:17anxiety and mental health issues and he
- 00:07:19had his moments but he responded well to
- 00:07:22a little TLC he said he never needed
- 00:07:25excessive force to be held back I had
- 00:07:27him in his fits and all he needed was to
- 00:07:30be heard held and sometimes bare hugged
- 00:07:33and he would just melt in your
- 00:07:43arms Dakota and hated bonded quickly he
- 00:07:46said from the beginning the boy looked
- 00:07:48up to him as a father he never didn't
- 00:07:50call me dad he was always like Dad this
- 00:07:53Dad that let's go on a walk at his new
- 00:07:56foster home he kept his tradition of bug
- 00:07:58hunting and love playing outside in the
- 00:08:00yard pictures from this time with Hayden
- 00:08:03show a happy kid coloring drawing posing
- 00:08:06for the first day of first grade
- 00:08:08building with blocks and Legos and
- 00:08:10playing with his sister he also spent
- 00:08:12time with his foster grandparents
- 00:08:14Sabrina and Joe hetel one year Grandpa
- 00:08:17Joe even dressed up as a Yeti so Dakota
- 00:08:19could find one for Halloween and Hayden
- 00:08:22got the boy initials tached on his ankle
- 00:08:25in September of 2021 Dakota's biological
- 00:08:28father Dakota D Stevens passed away from
- 00:08:30complications of his struggle with
- 00:08:32addiction Dakota's biological mother
- 00:08:34also relinquished her parental rights
- 00:08:36around that time Hayden and his family
- 00:08:38were trying to adopt Dakota and his
- 00:08:40sister but the situation soon got
- 00:08:42complicated sister's adoption was
- 00:08:44contested in the courts which caused a
- 00:08:46delay Hayden's personal circumstances
- 00:08:49changed he explained on social media 2
- 00:08:52and A2 years in some really weird
- 00:08:54unfortunate circumstances and instances
- 00:08:56that happened to us that made me have to
- 00:08:58walk away initially at the time of
- 00:09:00adoption being a single dad at that
- 00:09:02point and not having help while working
- 00:09:0416 hours every day would not have been
- 00:09:06the life for them however he emphasized
- 00:09:09that even though he wasn't able to adopt
- 00:09:11the kids on his first attempt once he
- 00:09:13was able to overcome the unfortunate
- 00:09:15circumstances he tried again to adopt
- 00:09:17Dakota DCS and the courts would not let
- 00:09:21him Hayden said he was always loved and
- 00:09:24not for a second did we not want him we
- 00:09:26wanted him to be safe healthy and loved
- 00:09:29after the adoption fell through DCS
- 00:09:31removed the children from Hayden's care
- 00:09:33and Dakota was placed in a mental
- 00:09:35institution in Southbend Indiana for
- 00:09:37treatment he and his sister were split
- 00:09:39up she was adopted by a family but once
- 00:09:42Dakota was released from the treatment
- 00:09:43program he was once again shuffled from
- 00:09:46foster home to foster home we into
- 00:09:48Hayden Dakota begged for a while to come
- 00:09:51back because he felt safe and happy at
- 00:09:53our home in October of 2022 Hayden and
- 00:09:56his parents Grandpa Joe and Grandma
- 00:09:58Sabrina were able to bring Dakota home
- 00:10:00for a week but after that short time a
- 00:10:02judge denied the placement without
- 00:10:04giving them any reason or explanation
- 00:10:06whatsoever as we've seen in countless
- 00:10:08cases DCS hides many of their actions
- 00:10:11behind privacy laws meaning the public
- 00:10:13and even the people involved are left
- 00:10:15with more questions than they are
- 00:10:16answers but during their short week
- 00:10:18together Hayden and his family were able
- 00:10:20to make more memories with Dakota when
- 00:10:22it became clear they wouldn't be allowed
- 00:10:24to keep him Hayden told the DCS
- 00:10:26officials that the ideal placement for
- 00:10:28Dakota would be in a home home where he
- 00:10:29was the only child he said he was
- 00:10:31thriving in an environment with no kids
- 00:10:34Hayden post about his time as Dakota's
- 00:10:36father saying I have and will continue
- 00:10:38to love you with every part of my heart
- 00:10:41I hope the time that I had you I was
- 00:10:43able to show you what a good man should
- 00:10:44be and I hope you took and lived each

- 00:10:58your first real haircut last year at the
- 00:10:59barber shop I'm glad I had you for the

- 00:11:08sleepless nights the endless memories
- 00:11:10your excitement and passion for anything
- 00:11:13that you did and put your mind to amazed
- 00:11:15me it's not exactly clear where Dakota
- 00:11:18spent the next year but Reports say he
- 00:11:20bounced between staying with relatives
- 00:11:22and Foster Care another Aunt Nicole
- 00:11:24rubal Cava had custody of hidden for
- 00:11:26some time but DCS removed him from her
- 00:11:29care as well wherever he went and
- 00:11:32despite his struggles he was always
- 00:11:34doing something creative in early 2024
- 00:11:37he started making paper boxes and
- 00:11:39selling them for $2 a box he sold one to
- 00:11:42Aaliyah Stewart who he knew from a local
- 00:11:44youth center but along with her box she
- 00:11:47said she got much more from the young
- 00:11:49entrepreneur she said he held me to my
- 00:11:52accountability when she missed her
- 00:11:54arranged pickup time leaving her a Stern
- 00:11:57voicemail message he he also talked her
- 00:12:00into downloading a free version of
- 00:12:02Minecraft according to one of his
- 00:12:04relatives he always dreamed of starting
- 00:12:06his own business and this project was
- 00:12:08one step down that path to making that
- 00:12:10dream come true he was staying with one
- 00:12:13of his aunts in April of 2024 when he
- 00:12:15moved yet again this time to Liberty
- 00:12:18Township in the home of Jennifer Lee
- 00:12:20Wilson and her husband Robert Wilson
- 00:12:23Robert worked as the principal of the
- 00:12:25nearby Lake Ridge new Tech Middle School
- 00:12:28the couple became licensed foster
- 00:12:30parents in 2017 after completing what
- 00:12:32DCS described as the required training
- 00:12:35and education required to achieve and
- 00:12:37maintain
- 00:12:38lure the couple had adopted three
- 00:12:41children they fostered and according to
- 00:12:43Jennifer they were ready to stop
- 00:12:45fostering but they knew Dakota because
- 00:12:47they had provided respit care for him a
- 00:12:49couple of years earlier which means they
- 00:12:51took him for a short time so his
- 00:12:53caretakers could have a break so despite
- 00:12:56their plans to stop they decided to take
- 00:12:58him in and despite Hayden's suggestion
- 00:13:01that they find Dakota a home where he
- 00:13:02would be the only child DCS decideed to
- 00:13:05place him with the Wilson's in their
- 00:13:07three children on April 5th 2024 he
- 00:13:11moved into their home on Falcon Way in
- 00:13:13val perzo Indiana though all of his
- 00:13:16foster parents admitted he could be a
- 00:13:18handful sometimes Jennifer painted a
- 00:13:20much darker picture of Dakota she said
- 00:13:23he had quote verbal and physical
- 00:13:26aggression issues though it is hard to
- 00:13:28imagine that she found him physically
- 00:13:30intimidating because the 10-year-old was
- 00:13:32a small slight boy who weighed only 91
- 00:13:34lb and Jennifer was much larger than
- 00:13:36that according to her driver's license
- 00:13:39she stood 4 11 in tall and weighed 340
- 00:13:42lb April 25th Jennifer said Dakota woke
- 00:13:45up agitated because she had told him not
- 00:13:48to run in the house while playing Nerf
- 00:13:50guns with the other children she told
- 00:13:52all the children they could go outside
- 00:13:53to play once they finish their chores
- 00:13:55but she said Dakota refused to complete
- 00:13:57his as a consequence she said he wasn't
- 00:13:59allowed to play outside but he said he
- 00:14:01was leaving and went outside anyway she
- 00:14:03said he had not done this before so she
- 00:14:06planned to give him about 5 minutes to
- 00:14:07in her words cool off but when she went
- 00:14:10out in the backyard to confront him she
- 00:14:12realized he had run away down the street
- 00:14:14deota was talking to a neighbor he asked
- 00:14:17the woman if she would adopt him and
- 00:14:18asked her to call the police he said his
- 00:14:20current foster parents hit him in the
- 00:14:22face and didn't let him call his case
- 00:14:24worker concerned the neighbor looked for
- 00:14:26signs of CA but said she didn't see any
- 00:14:29injuries on his face or any other area
- 00:14:31she could easily observe while they were
- 00:14:33talking Jennifer drove up in a car and
- 00:14:35asked Dakota to get in he refused the
- 00:14:38neighbor told her she was worried
- 00:14:40something was wrong because Dakota asked
- 00:14:41her to call the police Jennifer told her
- 00:14:43to mind her own business because she
- 00:14:45didn't know what was going on eventually
- 00:14:47unable to get help Dakota got in the
- 00:14:49back seat of the car and Jennifer drove
- 00:14:51him back to the house it's worth pausing
- 00:14:53here to point out that the neighbor who
- 00:14:55was just trying to help might have
- 00:14:57inadvertently made the the situation
- 00:14:59even more tense if you tell a regular
- 00:15:02parent that their kid asks you to call
- 00:15:04the police they're likely to be
- 00:15:06embarrassed but if you tell a complete
- 00:15:08monster the same thing you risk making
- 00:15:11them even more angry and putting the
- 00:15:14child in even more danger now back at
- 00:15:16the house Jennifer said Dakota wouldn't
- 00:15:18get out of the car so she got out and
- 00:15:21opened the back door she said he acted
- 00:15:23up by screaming and telling her he was
- 00:15:25going to leave she said she isn't
- 00:15:28exactly clear about what happened next
- 00:15:31she said she wanted to get him under
- 00:15:32control and keep him from leaving but
- 00:15:34she isn't sure if she tackled the boy or
- 00:15:37if they fell down accidentally somehow
- 00:15:40they ended up on the ground and her
- 00:15:42heavy body pinned them beneath her for
- 00:15:44more than 7 Minutes the Wilson's home
- 00:15:47had a ring video camera installed and
- 00:15:49the camera captured the altercation in
- 00:15:51several Clips she was also able to speak
- 00:15:53to her husband through the ring camera
- 00:15:55and the video clips were sent to his
- 00:15:56cell phone the first 2 second clip
- 00:15:59showed Jennifer sprawled across Dakota's
- 00:16:01head and neck while he screamed and
- 00:16:03flailed around this time Jennifer used
- 00:16:05her phone to FaceTime Toot's case worker
- 00:16:08she kept her body on top of the boy
- 00:16:09during this call she was holding the
- 00:16:12phone with one hand she could only
- 00:16:13support herself with her one free hand
- 00:16:16casew worker tried to calm him down but
- 00:16:18had little success likely because Dakota
- 00:16:20knew he was in danger after her called
- 00:16:23the case worker she used the ring
- 00:16:24doorbell to speak to her husband telling
- 00:16:26him Dakota was having one of his days
- 00:16:29the next 20 second clip she was still on
- 00:16:32top of him but she seemed to be resting
- 00:16:34some of her weight on her right arm and
- 00:16:36elbow which was planted on the ground at
- 00:16:38this point Dakota was still moving and
- 00:16:40able to scream but his efforts began to
- 00:16:42fade by the third clip he had fallen
- 00:16:45silent and gone still his arms were
- 00:16:47stretched above his head Jennifer was
- 00:16:50still on top of him but she had moved
- 00:16:52down his body and was laying across his
- 00:16:54hips this clip was longer lasting 6
- 00:16:57minutes and 48 seconds and during that
- 00:16:59entire time Dakota doesn't move at all
- 00:17:03the next clip neither had changed
- 00:17:05position she was still crushing him he
- 00:17:08wasn't moving she claimed she thought he
- 00:17:10was faking it when he stopped trying to
- 00:17:12get away the fifth video clip Jennifer
- 00:17:15had hoisted herself up onto one knee
- 00:17:18Dakota was motionless beneath her face
- 00:17:20down on the ground she rolled him over
- 00:17:22she noticed his eyelids were pale
- 00:17:24finally realizing he was unconscious and
- 00:17:26unresponsive she screamed his name
- 00:17:28several times and asked one of her
- 00:17:29children to call 911 said I was laying
- 00:17:32on him he was acting bad at some point
- 00:17:35during the altercation a neighbor
- 00:17:37noticed what was going on and she
- 00:17:38started CPR on the boy a firefighter who
- 00:17:42lived nearby heard the call and ran to
- 00:17:44help taking over the CPR at around 3:37
- 00:17:47police and EMTs arrived in response to a
- 00:17:50call about a medical emergency when they
- 00:17:52arrived Dakota wasn't breathing and he
- 00:17:55had no pulse they noticed bruising on
- 00:17:57his neck and chest
- 00:17:59paramedics rushed him to Porter memorial
- 00:18:01hospital and from there he was airlifted
- 00:18:04to the larger Southbend Memorial
- 00:18:06Hospital where he was placed on life
- 00:18:07support but he'd been without oxygen for
- 00:18:10too long and couldn't recover 2 days
- 00:18:13later on April 27th he was taken off
- 00:18:16life support and pronounced dead shortly
- 00:18:19after police said Jennifer looked
- 00:18:21visibly distraught they took her
- 00:18:24statement but they didn't arrest her the
- 00:18:26next day she sent them the ring video
- 00:18:28footage from from her husband's cell
- 00:18:29phone based on their actions police
- 00:18:31treated her more like a witness rather
- 00:18:33than a murderer relatives were told that
- 00:18:36Dakota had suffered a medical emergency
- 00:18:38but weren't given many details DCS
- 00:18:41officials first said that neither his
- 00:18:43family members or his former foster
- 00:18:45parents could even attend his funeral
- 00:18:47because he was awarded the state
- 00:18:50understandably they were heartbroken
- 00:18:52angry and afraid that they wouldn't get
- 00:18:54a chance to say goodbye to the little
- 00:18:56boy that they loved on April 29th his
- 00:18:59grandfather George Stevens posted a
- 00:19:01desperate Cry for Help on social media
- 00:19:03it read okay Facebook people I need help
- 00:19:06my grandson Dakota Levi Stevens was in
- 00:19:08DCFS custody cuz my son and his
- 00:19:11girlfriend lost custody and gave up
- 00:19:12their parental rights we just found out
- 00:19:14that my grandson is dead can't get any
- 00:19:16help through DCFS or information worst
- 00:19:20of all there's nothing on the news about
- 00:19:21it and supposedly whoever was taking
- 00:19:24care of him or possibly going to adopt
- 00:19:26him somehow suffocated him in the
- 00:19:28process C of getting control in some
- 00:19:30type of fit that he was having he ended
- 00:19:32up going to the hospital put on life
- 00:19:34support found out that he was brain dead
- 00:19:36they pulled the plug and he died I can't
- 00:19:39get any information to clear any of this
- 00:19:41up or to be able to attend my grandson's
- 00:19:44funeral through the DCFS office
- 00:19:46relatives reached out to local news
- 00:19:47outlets searching for answers a week
- 00:19:50after his death Hayden told reporters he
- 00:19:52still had no answers 2 weeks later one
- 00:19:55of his aunts told reporters we have not
- 00:19:57heard anything from the police
- 00:19:59eventually DCS officials changed their
- 00:20:01minds and allowed the family to attend
- 00:20:03his funeral the department released a
- 00:20:05public statement through their spokesman
- 00:20:07Brian Hinman who said our entire staff
- 00:20:10is heartbroken by this news DCS works
- 00:20:12with stakeholders and partners across
- 00:20:14the state to investigate the death of a
- 00:20:16child anytime there is suspected
- 00:20:17violence or neglect and will take the
- 00:20:19appropriate action he said that Jennifer
- 00:20:22and Robert's Foster license had been put
- 00:20:24on hold after review and substantiation
- 00:20:26of CA it could be revoked
- 00:20:29after the Department's change of heart
- 00:20:31his family was allowed to plan his
- 00:20:32funeral which was held on May 6th at the
- 00:20:35gon Funeral Home in Crown Point his
- 00:20:38family set up a huge inflatable shark
- 00:20:40over the driveway outside of the funeral
- 00:20:42home in honor of the boy who wanted to
- 00:20:44discover a new species MERS walk through
- 00:20:47the shark's open mouth on their way to
- 00:20:49the entrance inside family members set
- 00:20:52up pictures of Dakota as well as his
- 00:20:54favorite Thomas the tank engine trains
- 00:20:57school projects and things he made were
- 00:20:59displayed on the wall a large Lego
- 00:21:01creation sat on each side of his blue
- 00:21:04casket over 100 people attended his
- 00:21:07service including his favorite teacher
- 00:21:09Mrs tarnavski she said she had learned a
- 00:21:12lot from him and that knowing him and
- 00:21:14seeing how he handled his struggles
- 00:21:15helped her accept traumatic experiences
- 00:21:18from her own life she said the love he
- 00:21:21shared with his family was his greatest
- 00:21:23strength saying I've heard many bad
- 00:21:25things about what happened to this child
- 00:21:28he told me all of it but it was never
- 00:21:31about his family Dakota was his own hero
- 00:21:34each day and the reason for that was the
- 00:21:37foundation from his family I just need
- 00:21:39you to know he loved you too every
- 00:21:42single day one of the truly special
- 00:21:45things about Dakota was his ability to
- 00:21:47stay optimistic no matter what he went
- 00:21:49through his Aunt Nicole rubacava said
- 00:21:52even if he battled stuff this kid's
- 00:21:54heart truly was not made for this world
- 00:21:56he taught me so much he truly did and I
- 00:21:59didn't think a kid could teach you stuff
- 00:22:00like that at his funeral service Aunt
- 00:22:03Nicole told a story from the time he
- 00:22:04spent with her about 3 days before he
- 00:22:06was placed back in foster care she said
- 00:22:08they sat down and had a talk she told
- 00:22:10him promise when you make it out of the
- 00:22:13system I just want you to tell me
- 00:22:15everything you make with your Legos she
- 00:22:17said he agreed and that the two of them
- 00:22:19touched their thumbs together to seal
- 00:22:21the promise it was a way for them to
- 00:22:23both keep their spirits up while they
- 00:22:25had to be aart it wasn't the way she
- 00:22:27hoped for but she said in a way Dakota
- 00:22:30kept the most important part of his
- 00:22:32promise looking over at his casket she
- 00:22:34said he came back to me he made it out
- 00:22:37of the system later that day after his
- 00:22:39funeral a vigil was held in his memory
- 00:22:41in the Eagle Ridge Subdivision where he
- 00:22:43died the vigil was organized by Monica
- 00:22:46gimenez a resident of the community who
- 00:22:48was also a relative of Dakota's Foster
- 00:22:50father Hayden the vigil was held at the
- 00:22:52community playground and residents H to
- 00:22:54raise money to put up a plaque there in
- 00:22:56his memory more than 100 people attended
- 00:22:59Dakota's name was spelled out in silver
- 00:23:01balloons tied to the top of a swing set
- 00:23:03and everyone ate pizza one of his
- 00:23:05favorite foods tendy lit candles and
- 00:23:07held up the flashlights on their cell
- 00:23:09phones during a moment of silence and
- 00:23:10prayer many wore black t-shirts with a
- 00:23:13photo of Dakota on the front and justice
- 00:23:15for Dakota on the back Hayden told the
- 00:23:18gathered crowd I don't know if anybody
- 00:23:20knew Dakota but Dakota would have loved
- 00:23:22everybody being here together he would
- 00:23:24have talked your ear off the whole time
- 00:23:26Hayden's mother Sabrina spoke of holding
- 00:23:28DCS accountable saying we're heartbroken
- 00:23:31over the events that took place we're
- 00:23:33here because we want Justice for Dakota
- 00:23:35there needs to be changes a child lost
- 00:23:38his life and it was senseless it was a
- 00:23:40system that was supposed to protect him
- 00:23:42and it failed though they were able to
- 00:23:44lay Dakota to rest his family and Foster
- 00:23:47family still didn't have answers and no
- 00:23:49one was being held responsible for his
- 00:23:51death on May 20th Foster father Hayden
- 00:23:54posted the following on social media it
- 00:23:57read how is it that the smallest
- 00:23:59infraction of a crime whether it be
- 00:24:01driving without a license or petty theft
- 00:24:04from a store those people get charged
- 00:24:06and taken in right away but the murderer
- 00:24:09of a 10-year-old boy is getting swept
- 00:24:12under the mat 25 days say it with me
- 00:24:1725 days since the murder of Dakota Levi
- 00:24:21Stevens 25 days later and his murderer
- 00:24:24is walking
- 00:24:25free near the end of May Dakota's Ava
- 00:24:28Parish felt like she had to do something
- 00:24:31so she started a protest calling for
- 00:24:34Justice at this first protest she wanted
- 00:24:37police to charge Jennifer with a crime
- 00:24:39arrest her and lock her up she missed
- 00:24:41her nephew and said the days of us being
- 00:24:44reunited will never happen it's really
- 00:24:46hard on my daughter and it's been really
- 00:24:48hard on my husband that's why we're out
- 00:24:51here because he doesn't have a voice we
- 00:24:54have to be his voice when the family
- 00:24:56still didn't have the answers next month
- 00:24:58she held another protest in late June
- 00:25:01she and other members of his family
- 00:25:03along with supporters gathered at a busy
- 00:25:05intersection on Indiana 149 carrying
- 00:25:08signs and bullhorns and letting the
- 00:25:10public know that Jennifer had messed
- 00:25:12with the wrong family investigators say
- 00:25:14the death of a 10-year-old boy in foster
- 00:25:17care was a homicide Dakota Stevens died
- 00:25:20back in April two days after he suffered
- 00:25:22what was described as a medical
- 00:25:24emergency at his foster home in
- 00:25:25Northwest Indiana an autopsy determined
- 00:25:28that that he died from mechanical
- 00:25:30asphixiation which is when an object or
- 00:25:32physical Force stops someone from
- 00:25:34breathing no one has been charged in
- 00:25:36Dakota's death authorities say they are
- 00:25:38still
- 00:25:40investigating in July the St Joseph
- 00:25:42County Corner's office completed the
- 00:25:44autopsy report cota's cause of death was
- 00:25:47listed as mechanical asfixia which
- 00:25:48happens when an object or physical Force
- 00:25:51stops a person from breathing in this
- 00:25:53case the weight of Jennifer's Body
- 00:25:55literally stopped him from breathing his
- 00:25:57brain had severe swelling because he had
- 00:25:59been deprived of oxygen for an extended
- 00:26:01period of time he also had suffered
- 00:26:03organ damage and Hemorrhage from his
- 00:26:05liver and lungs his manner of death was
- 00:26:08ruled a homicide July 12th Jennifer was
- 00:26:11charged with Reckless homicide which is
- 00:26:12a level five felony in Indiana One Step
- 00:26:15Up from the lowest level felony possible
- 00:26:19if convicted she would serve a maximum
- 00:26:22of just 6 years in prison now if you
- 00:26:24remember earlier cases we've covered in
- 00:26:27Indiana you might remember that they
- 00:26:29have credit time laws what this means to
- 00:26:31spare you the details is that if she was
- 00:26:34considered a model prisoner she would
- 00:26:37only need to serve half her sentence
- 00:26:40meaning she would only serve 3 years for
- 00:26:43killing
- 00:26:44deota around 1:00 p.m. officers went to
- 00:26:47her home to arrest her but didn't find
- 00:26:49her there she was out of town and had
- 00:26:51left the state a warrant for her arrest
- 00:26:53went out the next day a license plate
- 00:26:55reader captured her car in Baran County
- 00:26:57Michigan just north of the Indiana
- 00:26:59border the evening of July 13th the
- 00:27:01deputy there located her vehicle
- 00:27:03arrested her and held her on a fugitive
- 00:27:05of Justice warrant she was extradited
- 00:27:08back to Indiana and held on a $20,000
- 00:27:10cash Bond despite obviously
- 00:27:12demonstrating that she was a Flight Risk
- 00:27:15her case was assigned to Porter Superior
- 00:27:17Court Judge Mary dor on July 17th she
- 00:27:20made bond with help from her family and
- 00:27:22was released she returned to her home on
- 00:27:25Falcon way according to post made by
- 00:27:27Dakota's family her next hearing is
- 00:27:29scheduled in August as Jennifer has yet
- 00:27:32to be convicted of a crime she is
- 00:27:34considered innocent until proven guilty
- 00:27:36in a court of law we be sure to keep an
- 00:27:38eye out for updates when and if they
- 00:27:40become available Dakota's family
- 00:27:42including his army of aunts are Furious
- 00:27:45that she only faces a maximum of six
- 00:27:47years and they also want to hold DCS and
- 00:27:49Jennifer's husband accountable for their
- 00:27:51part their murder they have created
- 00:27:54three petitions online at the change.org
- 00:27:56website and are asking the public to
- 00:27:59sign in support one of the petitions
- 00:28:02asked the department to provide more
- 00:28:03training for foster parents to prevent
- 00:28:05similar deaths in the future it says
- 00:28:08more comprehensive classes should be
- 00:28:10introduced focusing on child psychology
- 00:28:13trauma informed care techniques and
- 00:28:15emergency response kills among
- 00:28:18others the second petition asked Lake
- 00:28:20Ridge new Tech Middle School to remove
- 00:28:22Robert from his role as principal since
- 00:28:24he is a mandated reporter and got no
- 00:28:27help for Dakota to despite seeing the
- 00:28:28incident via video call the school
- 00:28:31released a press release that said no
- 00:28:34charges are filed against Mr Wilson nor
- 00:28:36are any anticipated Lakeridge new tech
- 00:28:39schools has not received any reports
- 00:28:41that would cause suspicion about Mr
- 00:28:43Wilson's qualifications as an educator
- 00:28:46to ensure the safety and security of
- 00:28:48Lake Ridge students while we understand
- 00:28:51that the legal proceedings affect Mr
- 00:28:53Wilson's family Lake Ridge will continue
- 00:28:55to monitor these proceedings as any
- 00:28:58determination is made related to Mr
- 00:29:00Wilson's wife Dakota's family disagrees
- 00:29:03saying Lake County Indiana deserves
- 00:29:05School principles who are genuine
- 00:29:07Protectors of children's safety not
- 00:29:09those who will willingly turn a blind
- 00:29:11eye to ca the last petition demands more
- 00:29:15serious charges to be filed against
- 00:29:17Jennifer charges that would result in a
- 00:29:19harsher penalty than 6 years they
- 00:29:22believed that Jennifer was acting
- 00:29:23intentionally and she knew her actions
- 00:29:25were harming the boy they said it's
- 00:29:28seems the system yet again fail to
- 00:29:30protect Dakota we believe that Wilson's
- 00:29:33charges should be elevated from Reckless
- 00:29:35homicide to manslaughter or even murder
- 00:29:38for her actions were far from Reckless
- 00:29:40they were lethal and appeared
- 00:29:42intentional after they found out that
- 00:29:44Jennifer had been released on bond some
- 00:29:47family members protested on the sidewalk
- 00:29:49outside of her home chanting Justice for

- 00:32:23the day he was born and one of the many
- 00:32:25aunts who loved him unconditionally
- 00:32:27wants everyone to remember the Levi she
- 00:32:29remembers the little boy who is so full
- 00:32:32of life and love in a post online she
- 00:32:34said you matter Levi to me and to all
- 00:32:37that loved you we can't stop won't stop
- 00:32:40not until Justice is served not only on
- 00:32:43Earth but in the afterlife too not until
- 00:32:46you are remembered for all you are and
- 00:32:48all you would have been you must be
- 00:32:50remembered for the strong and brave
- 00:32:52person you were you were so much more
- 00:32:54than her victim and I will not let you
- 00:32:57be remembered as that that remember he
- 00:32:58was brave enough to seek help he was
- 00:33:00intelligent enough to do all he could to
- 00:33:03get help and try to prevent this at
- 00:33:05times I feel like his identity is being
- 00:33:07lost in all this yes we want Justice and
- 00:33:09a more appropriate charge and sentence
- 00:33:12yes we want DCFS held accountable too
- 00:33:14for their part in his homicide and all
- 00:33:16their nonsense actions but most
- 00:33:18important to me I want his memory and
- 00:33:20Legacy to live on a lot of the
- 00:33:22information out there focuses on what
- 00:33:23happened in the facts surrounding his
- 00:33:25death and focuses on the monster that
- 00:33:27took his life life while I'm grateful
- 00:33:29for the coverage please keep in mind he
- 00:33:31was a person a one in a million kid he
- 00:33:34was a son brother grandson nephew cousin
- 00:33:37friend he was loved and always will be
- 00:33:40how many news stories or Tik toks or
- 00:33:42YouTube videos take more than a second
- 00:33:44to mention him as a bright and loving
- 00:33:47kid mention his IQ or his interests or
- 00:33:50how much he loved his sister how many
- 00:33:52have truly covered him as a person and
- 00:33:55not a casualty Levi was and is more than
- 00:33:58a sensational reaction to violence and
- 00:34:00abuse that has been legally happening
- 00:34:02for years please I ask when you speak
- 00:34:04his name don't speak it solely as a
- 00:34:06victim or a statistic speak it full of
- 00:34:09life and love just as he was in his
- 00:34:12short life we will keep shouting your
- 00:34:14name Brother Bear you live on in all of
- 00:34:16us keep his name going not the person
- 00:34:19who took his life I choose to remember
- 00:34:21his smile and his laugh his Levi ways
- 00:34:24not the ugliness I miss you so much Levi
