- 00:00:36perform so fifth man y'all can take y'
- 00:00:39seats now y can take y seats
- 00:00:41now um before we
- 00:00:45start how does this feel right just to
- 00:00:47actually see over this is a room of 10
- 00:00:5112,000 black people that's here to
- 00:00:53empower themselves learn about
- 00:00:54entrepreneurship how how does this feel
- 00:00:56to actually see this this is amazing
- 00:01:02just to see so many people here within
- 00:01:04the entrepreneur Spirit you know that
- 00:01:06there's I have a disease right it's
- 00:01:08called
- 00:01:10ambition I contracted it from not
- 00:01:14having all right
- 00:01:16and I'm just going to always be going
- 00:01:19through an endless tunnel cuz I'll
- 00:01:21accomplish something and then I want to
- 00:01:23do something different my idea change or
- 00:01:27something now my ideas are getting so
- 00:01:28big that that it it's changing even how
- 00:01:31I uh like how I can deliver things I
- 00:01:35have to be conscious of what I'm saying
- 00:01:37or what I'm doing because the idea is
- 00:01:39it's going to disrupt my idea like a lot
- 00:01:41of music if you listen to the music this
- 00:01:44out right
- 00:01:46now I have to tap into my
- 00:01:51stupid I have to tap
- 00:01:54into the stupid side of me to write the
- 00:01:58right thing when it comes time to write
- 00:02:00the music so sometimes this is why I
- 00:02:02haven't created as much content as I was
- 00:02:04creating in the past and I started going
- 00:02:06towards the film production and
- 00:02:07development of these projects because I
- 00:02:10think I can impact things in a bigger
- 00:02:13way through that you know like Tyler's
- 00:02:15been there all by
- 00:02:17himself kind of disrupt it yeah I have a
- 00:02:21um I know people don't see it but but uh
- 00:02:25he invited me out to to come to his his
- 00:02:27Studios to show me his his operation and
- 00:02:30everything he had going on and it's
- 00:02:32amazing I think
- 00:02:34um I me he inspired me he inspired me I
- 00:02:38had the idea and already was going in
- 00:02:39that direction but when you can see the
- 00:02:41layout already I can uh prevent myself
- 00:02:44from making
- 00:02:45mistakes by not making the mistakes he's
- 00:02:49made cuz you know having him around and
- 00:02:51communicate with him is allowing me the
- 00:02:53ability to uh have information I
- 00:02:56wouldn't have privy to you know so it
- 00:02:58it's cool he text me right before before
- 00:03:01I got here asked me when I would be back
- 00:03:03in Atlanta and um following this I'll go
- 00:03:06to California so I had to I catch up
- 00:03:08with him after yeah yeah that I mean
- 00:03:10mentorship is important people obviously
- 00:03:12we know you from your music career
- 00:03:14legendary get riches D
- 00:03:16trying we heard the music aggressive in
- 00:03:18nature right but Curtis Jackson right
- 00:03:21the businessman are some of the same
- 00:03:24characteristics that you translate as
- 00:03:26the artist do they carry over to you as
- 00:03:28the business icon that you became do you
- 00:03:30need to be aggressive do you need to be
- 00:03:31ster like what are some of those things
- 00:03:33that transfer yeah I think when you have
- 00:03:36uh when you're aggressive did you have a
- 00:03:39uh if people ever had even a little bit
- 00:03:42of fear of you you got a second career
- 00:03:44at making them
- 00:03:45laugh you know so you watch guys like
- 00:03:48like Mike Tyson like I am Mike then you
- 00:03:50see him hangover you see him in a comedy
- 00:03:53film and it connects because they go
- 00:03:55look he was great I met Mike he was
- 00:03:56great he didn't even bite my [ __ ]
- 00:03:58ear you know like it was like cuz they
- 00:04:01expect the worst from you then when they
- 00:04:04have an experience and the experience
- 00:04:06would be at Pure normaly or did it feel
- 00:04:09like a lot more at that point and I for
- 00:04:12me the aggression when I end up in in
- 00:04:14the business setting this it's a lot
- 00:04:16easier to deal with me I do struggle
- 00:04:18with one thing right I do struggle with
- 00:04:20the growing up in a different uh
- 00:04:27environment like sometimes I deal with a
- 00:04:29turn and and a lot of times I'm dealing
- 00:04:31with attorneys right I've spent over 20
- 00:04:34$21
- 00:04:35million in legal
- 00:04:38fees since you send me I spend a million
- 00:04:40dollars a year in legal fees now as I
- 00:04:43have general counsel I have people that
- 00:04:44are just around but the more that they
- 00:04:47talk about you being a
- 00:04:50a a
- 00:04:52billionaire the more you better put your
- 00:04:54ass in the
- 00:04:57house cuz you f to get sued
- 00:05:00they trip over some [ __ ] all 50 why'd
- 00:05:02you do that on purpose what the [ __ ] did
- 00:05:04I
- 00:05:04[Laughter]
- 00:05:10do n it's a little different like you
- 00:05:12know I um I watched the uh like like
- 00:05:16having opportunities at different points
- 00:05:18because I start off first is the music
- 00:05:21it connects it works and it allows me to
- 00:05:23popularity and the ability to
- 00:05:25financially invest in different things
- 00:05:28right and
- 00:05:30I'm going to bet on the things that I
- 00:05:31know I can influence myself I know if I
- 00:05:33know the momentum and the music was
- 00:05:36there so I I was betting on new artists
- 00:05:39and developing the artist's career and
- 00:05:41then sometimes they couldn't come up
- 00:05:42with the right stuff so I was writing it
- 00:05:43for him because I I could do it myself
- 00:05:46like at that point but then I start
- 00:05:49wanting to do different things and I I
- 00:05:50went with to the film projects
- 00:05:54early I had I started I did the the
- 00:05:57biggest straight to DVD movie deal
- 00:06:00ever I thought I was making movies
- 00:06:03because we're going to put them in the
- 00:06:05theater and they was just going straight
- 00:06:08to DVD but there was straight to DVD now
- 00:06:11was straight to
- 00:06:13streaming so it's straight to your
- 00:06:15Netflix it's straight to your Hulu it's
- 00:06:17straight to your you know like when it
- 00:06:20was Will Smith when will did the movie
- 00:06:22directly with Netflix it changed how
- 00:06:25people perceive those those projects
- 00:06:27monster film y it's the monster film and
- 00:06:29there there's a uh I watched it and
- 00:06:32because there's a there used to be a
- 00:06:34line a clear line between television and
- 00:06:36film
- 00:06:37production
- 00:06:39and actors that were successful on TV
- 00:06:43the film actors wouldn't go near them
- 00:06:45like they would stay away from it
- 00:06:46because they felt like it was a higher
- 00:06:48grade of quality that they wanted to
- 00:06:50stay more cache to you being a movie
- 00:06:52star than you being a television star
- 00:06:54but now we're producing premium projects
- 00:06:58that allow UC Force wh and Godfather
- 00:07:01Harlem you see Academy Award winning
- 00:07:03actors choosing television cuz it it
- 00:07:06builds a consistency and they can pay
- 00:07:07out the money that keep the talent happy
- 00:07:10with staying there
- 00:07:12like but you you do need to know with
- 00:07:14with power everybody told me
- 00:07:17no I pitched that show to all of the
- 00:07:21networks and they were like
- 00:07:24no and I wanted to make the project so
- 00:07:26bad that I went and I I recorded
- 00:07:29uh eight songs because the last place
- 00:07:32they spend money in television
- 00:07:34production is music
- 00:07:36and it's just the last the director or
- 00:07:39put together his dream sequence of Music
- 00:07:41this under it and you watch his version
- 00:07:43of it and
- 00:07:45then the music supervisor will come in
- 00:07:47and change it to something that feels
- 00:07:49the same that doesn't cost
- 00:07:51anything and you know if if it wouldn't
- 00:07:54sell on iTunes I really don't I don't
- 00:07:57want the [ __ ] in my project
- 00:07:59that's why I made the theme music for
- 00:08:02the projects because I said it has to be
- 00:08:03good enough to to for them to feel
- 00:08:08something when it comes on like I felt
- 00:08:10when you know we had television shows
- 00:08:12like good times when that came on you
- 00:08:15felt
- 00:08:17something good
- 00:08:21times temporary lay
- 00:08:27off yeah yeah I thought and I'm thinking
- 00:08:30about it it's pretty powerful right
- 00:08:32because we come from an era where like
- 00:08:33even now you go to a club and they might
- 00:08:35be playing The Fresh Prince theme song
- 00:08:37yeah but now I'm watching you perform
- 00:08:38the power theme song talk about the
- 00:08:41intentionality of defying the the no
- 00:08:44right because you could have just said
- 00:08:46all right well maybe this is not for me
- 00:08:49right you had some success in film but
- 00:08:50television wasn't that yeah talk about
- 00:08:52the Define the odd and say all right I'm
- 00:08:54going to film this thing anyway for
- 00:08:56power oh when yeah when when they
- 00:08:58telling me no I'm like like why do you
- 00:09:00keep telling me no like I want to I want
- 00:09:02to do
- 00:09:04it like cuz cuz like music is
- 00:09:08like we can make it at
- 00:09:11home we can go get a track from YouTube
- 00:09:14the producer record it on your laptop
- 00:09:17put it on iTunes it's on
- 00:09:20YouTube and it it can go like the film
- 00:09:22projects there was a resistance that I
- 00:09:24didn't I wasn't accustomed to feeling at
- 00:09:26like
- 00:09:28and when I came back with the music and
- 00:09:30we pitched it and I was playing and I
- 00:09:32was talking to Chris Alber because at
- 00:09:34the time with Chris I always recognize
- 00:09:36him because he's an Innovative thinker
- 00:09:39he's one of those guys that could see it
- 00:09:42like when I he gave me the green light
- 00:09:44on the project right
- 00:09:45and it was I only was getting
- 00:09:49$177,000 to pay a reoccurring character
- 00:09:52the Kanan character to be the executive
- 00:09:55producer and damn near be the music
- 00:09:57supervisor for the Pro and they wouldn't
- 00:10:00accept the cast of
- 00:10:02power for three
- 00:10:04seasons Good Morning America like I was
- 00:10:07at the nightclub last night and they be
- 00:10:09like yo if he doesn't come we don't even
- 00:10:11want
- 00:10:13the I just came from the nightclub it's
- 00:10:16like with Good Morning America it's like
- 00:10:174:30 5:00 in the morning so I was like
- 00:10:20all right just give me a
- 00:10:22suit put the suit on I was a little
- 00:10:25agitated if you look back at those
- 00:10:26interviews I didn't want to answer those
- 00:10:28questions
- 00:10:31I'm like bro
- 00:10:32don't why am I doing this like they pay
- 00:10:35me more to go to the
- 00:10:36nightclub just to just
- 00:10:38go all right
- 00:10:40so I just wanted to do it and then I
- 00:10:43kind of got them pregnant with the idea
- 00:10:44you see what it turned into it turned
- 00:10:46into four shows and and in the universe
- 00:10:50that it's been number one in
- 00:10:51africanamerican and Latin household up
- 00:10:53for 10
- 00:10:56years so speaking of speaking of your
- 00:10:59Empire that you built you have recently
- 00:11:02sh Port Louisiana right talk about why
- 00:11:06sh
- 00:11:07port and what exactly you doing in
- 00:11:10streetport and somebody from streetport
- 00:11:11in the back street port's in the house
- 00:11:14hey no more ratchet in my
- 00:11:16[Laughter]
- 00:11:19city they they call treport got a
- 00:11:22nickname they call it ratchet
- 00:11:24City I don't like the idea of that
- 00:11:29I want to change
- 00:11:30that but look look look when I get to
- 00:11:33streetport it was the tax incenter event
- 00:11:35and and funny enough I uh have a
- 00:11:38relationship with AI learner and he
- 00:11:40owned Millennium Studios that was the
- 00:11:42previous Studio that was inry for so he
- 00:11:46there and he also owns a studio in
- 00:11:50Bulgaria that I I shot the the last
- 00:11:54Expendables with Stallone Jason S Megan
- 00:11:57Fox and Dolph London out there with him
- 00:12:00and I kind of got my when I was telling
- 00:12:02you guys about my business model for
- 00:12:04film kind of came through him like I
- 00:12:06would think that the project will be as
- 00:12:09good as what we put on paper and if we
- 00:12:12bring the right passionate group of
- 00:12:14talent together to to portray those
- 00:12:17characters that it'll be something
- 00:12:19that's really exciting at the end of it
- 00:12:21but they look at a future film like
- 00:12:23because you got to make the bulk of the
- 00:12:24money back in three
- 00:12:26weekends you got a minute and 30 seconds
- 00:12:29to make people say I want to see that
- 00:12:31and this is why it's a small group of
- 00:12:33people that consistently sell the
- 00:12:36feature film like we see Denzel
- 00:12:38Washington we go yeah I think I'm going
- 00:12:40to check that one
- 00:12:41out some and they could have keep them
- 00:12:45in
- 00:12:46a in a
- 00:12:48uh they got to pick projects that
- 00:12:51consistently are good so if it's if it's
- 00:12:54Stallone and it's on genre it's action
- 00:12:56film they know how much they could get
- 00:12:58for it and each one of the territories
- 00:13:00and they're selling it on a
- 00:13:01poster before you can even look at the
- 00:13:03frame of film so I'm like that's not
- 00:13:06what I thought it was like how it works
- 00:13:10and then I kind of got a clearer
- 00:13:12understanding from that experience and
- 00:13:14then you learn from mistakes I was
- 00:13:17working with the wrong
- 00:13:19people early on and uh and uh R the
- 00:13:23limit I got him from A's
- 00:13:26crew yeah he was and he was the wrong
- 00:13:28guy
- 00:13:30so he found out about me
- 00:13:34later
- 00:13:35yeah so what you know we we were talking
- 00:13:39backstage with SH and one of the things
- 00:13:41that you both have in common is that
- 00:13:43you've been able to navigate different
- 00:13:46networks kind of seamlessly right you
- 00:13:48had a show on ABC yeah you were on Stars
- 00:13:51you were streaming on
- 00:13:53peacock tell us about the leverage of
- 00:13:55using the platforms to your advantage
- 00:13:58and what the plan like how do you pick
- 00:14:00them right when do you decide that this
- 00:14:02is the perfect partner on Netflix to now
- 00:14:04say I want to stream or put programming
- 00:14:06on the the relationships like I'm
- 00:14:09pitching you pitch the projects to the
- 00:14:10same group of people so you may get a
- 00:14:13chance to pitch through the the top
- 00:14:16networks whether it's Netflix Hulu or
- 00:14:19peacock or these different people
- 00:14:22and because I had an overall deal Stars
- 00:14:24had to tell me no before I could go out
- 00:14:28to go sell the show like a first rer
- 00:14:30refusal yeah it's a first R refusal and
- 00:14:32because of
- 00:14:34that I'm like the easiest person to say
- 00:14:37no to they told me no I sold it to ABC
- 00:14:41told me no I sold it to Peacock told me
- 00:14:43no they sold over here they
- 00:14:46they did that until I accumulated like I
- 00:14:49currently have 34 shows across 10
- 00:14:51different Networks
- 00:14:52[Applause]
- 00:15:00and I was saying the same thing that
- 00:15:02they said to me when I was trying to
- 00:15:03pitch power why you keep telling me
- 00:15:07no you telling me know I'm like what it
- 00:15:10doesn't mean I'm not going to do it it
- 00:15:13just means okay you're not the right
- 00:15:15person to have success with me at the
- 00:15:17present moment these people will have
- 00:15:19success with
- 00:15:20[Applause]
- 00:15:23me and and I learned you know I've seen
- 00:15:26some people fail
- 00:15:27upward like they
- 00:15:30they you go damn how the hell did you
- 00:15:32get into a CEO position you stupid
- 00:15:36[ __ ] like you know they they
- 00:15:39think the job is to say no to hold on to
- 00:15:42the money to not spend it even when it's
- 00:15:44the right opportunity or it's the right
- 00:15:46project it's the right situation and I
- 00:15:48look at it I
- 00:15:50go I simplify things if I have a hit I
- 00:15:52just want more of the hit like when they
- 00:15:55asked me they say well you did you did
- 00:15:56great so what do you want to do next and
- 00:15:58I'm like
- 00:15:59more of what I just did
- 00:16:01like simple yeah like well it was
- 00:16:06my film and television career is is
- 00:16:09mirroring what my music career
- 00:16:11was my first
- 00:16:15album It's the largest debut on hip-hop
- 00:16:18album so 13 million records get rich or
- 00:16:21die trying absolute
- 00:16:23classer n we need more noise for get
- 00:16:26rich and die trying y'all got to stop
- 00:16:27playing
- 00:16:30God damn all right and and then the
- 00:16:33first television show is the highest
- 00:16:34rated show on that particular Network so
- 00:16:37it makes gives you the cache
- 00:16:42that kind of allowed me a little more
- 00:16:45leverage with the things what' you
- 00:16:48say what' you
- 00:16:53say man I don't even like
- 00:16:56them I'm going tell you the truth right
- 00:17:00cuz me and you are having this personal
- 00:17:01conversation right
- 00:17:04now I really don't like these people
- 00:17:07right but it's not about me liking them
- 00:17:10or or them liking me it's about what's
- 00:17:12good for business right so they go you
- 00:17:15think they like that like when I say
- 00:17:16things online I say yo it look like all
- 00:17:18they all went to school on a small yell
- 00:17:19little
- 00:17:20bus say some wow [ __ ] to them people man
- 00:17:23like they looking go what he
- 00:17:24say get his phone why he say some more
- 00:17:28[ __ ] like you know what I mean like but
- 00:17:29this is this one of those things where I
- 00:17:31don't want to
- 00:17:34like I don't want to make the other
- 00:17:37Executives afraid to work with
- 00:17:40me right but the that particular person
- 00:17:43cuz they look I think the one of the
- 00:17:45unwritten
- 00:17:47laws of businesses appear not to need
- 00:17:50anything CU everybody will do your favor
- 00:17:53when you don't need one if they can
- 00:17:56expect if they can expect a bigger favor
- 00:17:58return or favor from you at some later
- 00:18:00Point they'll find the ability to just
- 00:18:02do it here no problem that's why when
- 00:18:05they tell me no I go the television say
- 00:18:08they on they on
- 00:18:10strike I said okay I'm on
- 00:18:13[Laughter]
- 00:18:15tour all
- 00:18:17right that last tour I
- 00:18:20did what 103
- 00:18:23shows it's the third highest broen
- 00:18:26hip-hop tour ever key word
- 00:18:32ever and I only decid I decided to go
- 00:18:35because they was on strike so I'm like
- 00:18:38yo no no new album no nothing I'm ready
- 00:18:41but that's why you did the tour cuz it
- 00:18:42was a writer strike yeah because of the
- 00:18:44writer strike in the television I'm like
- 00:18:46no I'm going on tour and they going I'm
- 00:18:48like you too going still on tour tell me
- 00:18:51I need a new record these [ __ ]
- 00:18:52ain't put a record out in 100
- 00:18:57years and then it worked out it worked
- 00:18:59out like you know and my audience I like
- 00:19:02to say this my core audience was in
- 00:19:03college during 2003 right that's they
- 00:19:07here right now
- 00:19:12yeah hey and I love you if you just made
- 00:19:14noise I love you because without you I
- 00:19:17wouldn't be
- 00:19:19successful
- 00:19:22see that that c that noise that you
- 00:19:24heard from
- 00:19:2603 they uh the social experience is so
- 00:19:29important to them at that point that
- 00:19:31they party every available moment away
- 00:19:33from their school
- 00:19:35work so when you got the right song you
- 00:19:37go oh [ __ ] like people don't agree on a
- 00:19:39lot how many people Republican in
- 00:19:43here be
- 00:19:44[Laughter]
- 00:19:46careful get that [ __ ] man right
- 00:19:49there jump him after this hey look he
- 00:19:53trying to set him
- 00:19:54up he trying to line them up F now it's
- 00:19:58all good it's
- 00:19:59we I want y'all to partner him the
- 00:20:02brother made some
- 00:20:04money he think he a Republican
- 00:20:09now he said wait a minute he looked
- 00:20:12around oh
- 00:20:16[ __ ] he said what the [ __ ] 507 me
- 00:20:22up we in invest fast you know I think
- 00:20:24the look at at points the things that go
- 00:20:28on like the they are conscious of
- 00:20:30Finance now Republicans is it true so he
- 00:20:34done made some money he said [ __ ]
- 00:20:39that what one of the things we talk
- 00:20:42about especially in this crowd is access
- 00:20:44to Capital especially for black
- 00:20:46entrepreneurs black business Founders in
- 00:20:49your space money comes from advertising
- 00:20:51I wonder do we face challenges the same
- 00:20:54way that entrepreneurs are facing when
- 00:20:56it comes to getting dollars from
- 00:20:57corporate
- 00:20:59well initially when I get into a new
- 00:21:02Venture I finance it like I usually use
- 00:21:05my money to start and then as we get
- 00:21:09into new positions I may take investment
- 00:21:11dollars but like if you look at Branson
- 00:21:14coniac and shim the champagne I own the
- 00:21:17entire company like
- 00:21:24those that's completely blackowned well
- 00:21:27I want so I want to talk about that
- 00:21:28right s s Spirits yeah so all right s
- 00:21:32Spirits completely blackowned like you
- 00:21:33said liquor company talk about thatz I
- 00:21:36know you had challenges before that
- 00:21:38right so talk about that whole situation
- 00:21:40yeah you run
- 00:21:41into you have the experience with major
- 00:21:43corporations like me my particular
- 00:21:46experience with beam sentor it was uh it
- 00:21:50was great in the
- 00:21:52beginning it's great for us to work for
- 00:21:57them it's not so cool when you start to
- 00:22:00own
- 00:22:01things you see what I'm saying so I made
- 00:22:04a lot of money with them too like
- 00:22:05there's a point they they did a deal
- 00:22:07that mirrored what Puffy's deal with di
- 00:22:10AIO was for Sarat so he didn't have
- 00:22:13ownership of that in any point but he
- 00:22:15was getting a lot of money like almost
- 00:22:17like $60 million a year at at one point
- 00:22:22so when uh you see him go to Da on is
- 00:22:26when you see him have some issues
- 00:22:29and they
- 00:22:30not it gets bad you know and these
- 00:22:33people have really strong relationships
- 00:22:35don't think
- 00:22:36that the civil case doesn't turn into a
- 00:22:39criminal case faster because he's making
- 00:22:43that them
- 00:22:45uncomfortable that's a big part of it
- 00:22:48you know what I mean like you look when
- 00:22:49you go to the spirits businesses it's
- 00:22:53it's not governed they got a discus
- 00:22:56board that they created right if you got
- 00:22:58two companies did uh $3 billion a year
- 00:23:02and beam centoria and Di AIO the the
- 00:23:05distribution level it's very hard for
- 00:23:09you to get things to a point where you
- 00:23:10can do the numbers the right numbers the
- 00:23:12amount
- 00:23:14so it's kind of like that they provide
- 00:23:16they incentivize the Salesforce by
- 00:23:18giving them box bonuses and then when
- 00:23:20you sell a product you get the bonuses
- 00:23:22off the boxes that's there but you make
- 00:23:24that no matter what product you're
- 00:23:27selling so if if you sell Hennessy or
- 00:23:30Remy out the gate they start to put
- 00:23:34downward pressure on the new companies
- 00:23:36you see I had a lawsuit with Remy with
- 00:23:38Remy it said that cuz I had a oval
- 00:23:40shaped
- 00:23:41bottle that uh there was some sort of
- 00:23:44product confusion and I'm like
- 00:23:47where it's a big bee in the middle of
- 00:23:49the [ __ ] bottle like you you don't
- 00:23:50own the shape the the whole shape of the
- 00:23:53bottle you know and then we had went in
- 00:23:57there for a little while
- 00:23:59until it came like you know I started
- 00:24:03saying [ __ ] like uh 1738 I bet they had
- 00:24:12slaves then [ __ ] got uncomfortable and
- 00:24:14they was like look look look relax
- 00:24:18okay can we make donations to existing
- 00:24:22foundations to make you feel
- 00:24:25happy yeah
- 00:24:29yeah it kind of it went away but but
- 00:24:32they do spend $63 million targeting
- 00:24:36African-American male consumers a
- 00:24:39year Remy Remy
- 00:24:41specifically you know so that's why that
- 00:24:44would be uncomfortable me making those
- 00:24:46statements and it's risk versus rewarded
- 00:24:48doesn't make sense to fight the fight so
- 00:24:50they said let's just let that go you
- 00:24:53know but you know they they kind of they
- 00:24:56RI me off too man godamn it
- 00:25:00they did they RI me off cuz cuz one of
- 00:25:02the head
- 00:25:03guys is that that has a sales for being
- 00:25:07stor they set up a
- 00:25:09play and
- 00:25:13uh they will able to send a letterhead
- 00:25:15from beam sentor over to to France and
- 00:25:18get the champagne company to commit to
- 00:25:19coming out and talking to them and they
- 00:25:22have these things like it's a uh where
- 00:25:25you put agency fees
- 00:25:29like someone who contacted your your
- 00:25:32grower or a person who was producing the
- 00:25:33conac for you and made the deal for you
- 00:25:35and they they put agency fees on a
- 00:25:38product to give you an example of the
- 00:25:41scheme that they put together it's like
- 00:25:43say you wanted to sell
- 00:25:45t-shirts and I go to China for
- 00:25:48you and I tell the people in China how
- 00:25:51much can you make the shirt for and they
- 00:25:52tell me $4 and then I come back and I
- 00:25:54tell you yo they said
- 00:25:57$8 and then every time you
- 00:26:00send the
- 00:26:03check to the
- 00:26:04producer they just put $4 on the side
- 00:26:07for for them every
- 00:26:10time so they they they ciphered off
- 00:26:13about six million dollar from me in the
- 00:26:16very beginning and then
- 00:26:20um it uh the legal fees has been almost
- 00:26:24a whole another almost $10 million so I
- 00:26:28put like like $70 million into Branson
- 00:26:32and and leim and D going as as a company
- 00:26:37this that's this is for my son that's
- 00:26:39High Spirits like later he can take this
- 00:26:41one you know but you you also went to
- 00:26:43congress with Ben Crump you went to
- 00:26:45Congress yeah with Ben Crump right to
- 00:26:47Advocate which what was that for yeah I
- 00:26:49remember the black caucus and uh with
- 00:26:52with Ben we went out there and talked
- 00:26:55about it because they they're not being
- 00:26:57policed like at that that
- 00:26:59point The discus board tells them to pay
- 00:27:02a fine how much does the fine mean when
- 00:27:04you're a $3 billion
- 00:27:05company just do what I want and if you
- 00:27:08catch me I just pay the fine doesn't
- 00:27:11matter you still just do what you want
- 00:27:13and then you know so they look into that
- 00:27:16particular category this is why you
- 00:27:17don't see a whole lot of us owning the
- 00:27:19brands that we consuming but when I was
- 00:27:21pointing out cuz I jumped around a
- 00:27:24little bit I got a habit of doing that
- 00:27:26right when I said that my core audience
- 00:27:29was in college in 2003 and partying at
- 00:27:31every available moment
- 00:27:34right
- 00:27:36when they identified that they were in
- 00:27:39charge of them like she's I'm a grown
- 00:27:42woman she decided you going to have some
- 00:27:44of this you going to have some of
- 00:27:46this now look when he's there and things
- 00:27:50go exactly the way they're supposed to
- 00:27:51do and they
- 00:27:53connect the experience what made people
- 00:27:56relax and enjoy themselves is the music
- 00:27:59itself and they connect that it's not
- 00:28:02finding a new audience it's finding your
- 00:28:04cool audience again cuz we do the same
- 00:28:06things that we did at that point a
- 00:28:08different way later in life you have the
- 00:28:10drink that you would have at a nightclub
- 00:28:12in the privacies of your home you might
- 00:28:14have wine when you have something to
- 00:28:16eat in success you have a wine
- 00:28:19seller or a bar in your house so you can
- 00:28:23invite the people that you comfortable
- 00:28:24with over and have that drink instead of
- 00:28:27being at the night club with your kids
- 00:28:29now if you are at the nightclub with
- 00:28:30your
- 00:28:31kids that's a whole another category
- 00:28:34teach you s i mean are that's a whole
- 00:28:36another category some people make
- 00:28:37different choices like look again this
- 00:28:39last tour
- 00:28:40right look this last tour it was
- 00:28:44different it was different from all my
- 00:28:46experiences toring
- 00:28:48because this time when I was like I was
- 00:28:50performing and I looked out in the crowd
- 00:28:52and I see like really attractive
- 00:28:55woman I said
- 00:28:58I
- 00:28:59said damn baby where's your
- 00:29:06mother you are way too young for
- 00:29:10me how old you
- 00:29:1423 yeah that's how it felt it was a
- 00:29:17little different that
- 00:29:22time you you're super intentional about
- 00:29:24naming s Spirits recently watched your
- 00:29:27interview you said you're not in the
- 00:29:28rush to be a billionaire anything you
- 00:29:30want you can have it's about him which
- 00:29:32is important cuz we really haven't seen
- 00:29:34generational wealth we've seen people
- 00:29:36get wealthy we've never seen it B being
- 00:29:38passed down as you're going through it
- 00:29:41and learning lessons and it seems like
- 00:29:43you're learning from other people's
- 00:29:44mistakes and corrected
- 00:29:45them are you imple are you having him
- 00:29:48around the process and showing him some
- 00:29:50of these things now at an early age so
- 00:29:52that he can have a future trajectory
- 00:29:54that's way greater than you could have
- 00:29:55ever respected I'm trying not to
- 00:29:56overexpose him
- 00:29:58you know it's it just September 1st was
- 00:30:00his birthday turned
- 00:30:0212 super innocent like he really don't
- 00:30:06understand like at me at 12 I was I'm
- 00:30:08about to say a lot different from you at
- 00:30:1012 I was a little different a lot
- 00:30:12different circumstances are different
- 00:30:14yeah like he grew up a lot different
- 00:30:16like he like he ain't going to be saying
- 00:30:18none of this [ __ ] I said in the
- 00:30:21merkers none of that he look at you like
- 00:30:23this what for real he don't even know
- 00:30:26his mother with puffy hey
- 00:30:32look
- 00:30:37who who who hey my life is a
- 00:30:42[Laughter]
- 00:30:44movie oh man
- 00:30:47allegedly well uh okay
- 00:30:53so so uh how do you how do you deal with
- 00:30:57entitlement right cuz that's something
- 00:30:59that you know I know I've heard you
- 00:31:01speak on it a lot and anybody that has
- 00:31:02reached any level of success you you you
- 00:31:05have people around you that feel
- 00:31:07entitled to your success and when they
- 00:31:09don't get what they want then they they
- 00:31:11they lash out and it's a dysfunctional
- 00:31:14relationship so what what lessons have
- 00:31:17you learned over the course of Life
- 00:31:18dealing with entitlement uh well I feel
- 00:31:21like there's no such thing as success
- 00:31:24without when we praying for it we're not
- 00:31:27praying for for jealousy we're not
- 00:31:28praying for Envy we're not praying for
- 00:31:31entitlement and it comes with it those
- 00:31:33three things and the jealousy is the
- 00:31:36easy part you
- 00:31:37just kind of distance yourself from that
- 00:31:40person uh the envious part you can't
- 00:31:43really see it as much per can be around
- 00:31:46you and just feel like I wish that was
- 00:31:48me you know and how bad is that if
- 00:31:50things are going well you know but the
- 00:31:53entitlement I think it it it shows up
- 00:31:58we're going to have some confusion go on
- 00:31:59regardlessly I think no matter
- 00:32:02what
- 00:32:04the and process the first time you give
- 00:32:07someone something from the kindness of
- 00:32:08your heart they're
- 00:32:09surprised the second time you give it to
- 00:32:11them they go thanks man I really
- 00:32:14appreciate that the third time they go
- 00:32:15yo I wish you would have gave me that
- 00:32:17last
- 00:32:18week and the fourth time damn man how
- 00:32:21long it took you to give me
- 00:32:23that why you wait so long to do that you
- 00:32:25got
- 00:32:26it and now it creates confusion or you
- 00:32:29have problems in different areas this is
- 00:32:32why like a lot of the talent when you
- 00:32:33see music artists right they go when you
- 00:32:37ask them what happened in the experience
- 00:32:39like why it's not going the way they
- 00:32:42would like it to go they usually say the
- 00:32:45label if was the label's fault you know
- 00:32:49and if if the labels are individual like
- 00:32:51it's a person then it's my fault it's
- 00:32:53that person's fault but it's not the
- 00:32:55label's responsibility to sustain your
- 00:32:57value
- 00:32:58value it's on you as an
- 00:33:02individual you know and they're going to
- 00:33:04sell what has the highest propability to
- 00:33:06sell and it doesn't matter to them
- 00:33:08whether it's your the new thing that
- 00:33:10they just picked up as long as it's
- 00:33:12continuing to sell it's a business
- 00:33:14so you watch that though they'll say it
- 00:33:18as far as entitlement is concerned
- 00:33:20you I we off of people I get off of
- 00:33:22people sometime they spoil like like
- 00:33:24milk it just take a little while and
- 00:33:27then they spoil easy job is a hard job
- 00:33:29you forget you
- 00:33:30working right you got some people that
- 00:33:33are blessed they're so talented they do
- 00:33:36it
- 00:33:37easy I'm not that
- 00:33:39talented [ __ ] that I got to work to make
- 00:33:41this [ __ ] work and this is why I don't
- 00:33:44just I'm not complacent because I've
- 00:33:46worked to make it work like look you
- 00:33:49look at Kobe Bryant's his career he'd be
- 00:33:52the training the most practicing the
- 00:33:55most to perform the best
- 00:33:58the other guys they come
- 00:34:00in he's like I'm
- 00:34:02nice he ain't in there all day he just
- 00:34:04coming in with this [ __ ] this gift he
- 00:34:07got so it's a higher probability that
- 00:34:09that guy [ __ ] up because he could be
- 00:34:12distracted with everything else
- 00:34:13everybody else's temperament all these
- 00:34:15things around him that can be an
- 00:34:17obstacle for his career and Kobe is
- 00:34:20being occupied by practicing by working
- 00:34:24you know and for me none of these things
- 00:34:27look
- 00:34:29none of these things equal complete
- 00:34:34happiness business is everything goes
- 00:34:36right for you in business there'll be
- 00:34:38things that
- 00:34:39you I I have to get accustomed to the
- 00:34:43things that like this is the greatest
- 00:34:46example right I know I'm jumping around
- 00:34:49look the greatest example this is better
- 00:34:51though music artist first music video
- 00:34:55the first thing they do is Rent A Car
- 00:34:58to put in a video to convey
- 00:35:00lifestyle right and and cut and the car
- 00:35:03goes
- 00:35:04back but if that [ __ ]
- 00:35:06Works he's going to get a version of
- 00:35:09that car if it's not that car he's going
- 00:35:10to get the one that he feels like is the
- 00:35:11coolest one he could get right and he
- 00:35:14has it and then
- 00:35:16immediately he
- 00:35:20becomes an inspiration in the
- 00:35:22environment because he made that happen
- 00:35:24he made it from nothing just it's just
- 00:35:27idea creatively came up with something
- 00:35:29that created the ability for him to have
- 00:35:32this car then in the
- 00:35:35environment like the way I grew up when
- 00:35:38you saw people have nice things somebody
- 00:35:40was doing something they wasn't supposed
- 00:35:42to be
- 00:35:44doing a relative or somebody in the
- 00:35:46early this is in the 80s into the
- 00:35:4990s it
- 00:35:51was a different ability to to get money
- 00:35:54out of the
- 00:35:55neighborhoods that existed at that point
- 00:35:58it's not there so much no more
- 00:36:01now their pieces is hitting they doing
- 00:36:04this
- 00:36:04scaming you got to do it a different way
- 00:36:08right
- 00:36:09but when you see those things my
- 00:36:11grandfather look I I just lost my
- 00:36:13grandfather rest in peace rest in peace
- 00:36:15Dolan say and uh he sacrificed the most
- 00:36:20for my entire family for me right and he
- 00:36:22simplified things so he would just go to
- 00:36:23work come home and just give my
- 00:36:25grandmother's check
- 00:36:28I be like God damn you just G to give it
- 00:36:29a whole
- 00:36:33check and then and I said I'm never
- 00:36:35going to understand how you just gave it
- 00:36:37the old check and he's like he said well
- 00:36:39you was a baby you wouldn't understand
- 00:36:40nowhere and he said but when I gave your
- 00:36:42mama the check it stopped her from
- 00:36:44looking at things that I couldn't give
- 00:36:47her she said now the woman you with is
- 00:36:50she the kind of
- 00:36:53woman that you would give everything
- 00:36:58because I would give your mama
- 00:36:59everything I loved her so much and it
- 00:37:02made
- 00:37:03me it's
- 00:37:10crazy and that made me look at things a
- 00:37:13little
- 00:37:14different cuz I was like my grandma a
- 00:37:19pimp now for everybody who clapped all
- 00:37:22you ladies who
- 00:37:25clapped I'd like you to raise your hand
- 00:37:28yeah okay now men look around these
- 00:37:31people are
- 00:37:37dangerous fif one of one of the greatest
- 00:37:40lines that in my opinion that you said
- 00:37:43is I took CT Wars put him in bottles for
- 00:37:46two bucks and Coca-Cola went boy for
- 00:37:48billions that's what's up yeah obviously
- 00:37:51great line but what you did is you
- 00:37:53opened up the world of financial
- 00:37:54literacy for us yeah that led to shotty
- 00:37:58writing stories about it that led to us
- 00:38:00having conversations about financial
- 00:38:02literacy at the time I was just like
- 00:38:05danam fifth made a lot of money off that
- 00:38:06but it was like this is a way now to
- 00:38:08teach people through music about making
- 00:38:11money that deal worked out pretty well
- 00:38:14yeah yeah that one pretty well I Wonder
- 00:38:17has there been a deal that you haven't
- 00:38:19spoken about that has been as lucrative
- 00:38:21as successful that you haven't put in a
- 00:38:23song have there been deals like that
- 00:38:24that have come across since that time
- 00:38:27you know what this well I did pretty
- 00:38:30well with SK
- 00:38:32Energy I I provided I partnered with the
- 00:38:35United Nations world food program and we
- 00:38:37was able to provide a meal with every
- 00:38:39energy drink that we sold and now
- 00:38:44one and and that that was I think
- 00:38:48promoting conscious capitalism is the
- 00:38:51way to to solve our issues because we
- 00:38:53got look 10% of business would alleviate
- 00:38:56all extreme poverty
- 00:38:58you got to think of how much 10% of gooo
- 00:39:00is
- 00:39:02worth think of how much 10% of what Bill
- 00:39:05Gates owns own little Farmland right so
- 00:39:0710% of that what would that be worth and
- 00:39:10then if we was utilizing that because it
- 00:39:12was if that company was developed under
- 00:39:14that
- 00:39:15model just because they thought people
- 00:39:17would embrace it faster if they knew it
- 00:39:20was that then we would find the finances
- 00:39:23to solve a lot of issues that we had
- 00:39:25going on but um
- 00:39:27yeah the vitamin one thing that was I
- 00:39:30didn't need the
- 00:39:31money like when when companies approach
- 00:39:35artists to be a part of the marketing
- 00:39:38it's just they've reached the financial
- 00:39:40level where they can commit that
- 00:39:42marketing right
- 00:39:44and it'll move the company to the next
- 00:39:47level the notoriety and everything that
- 00:39:50connects to it
- 00:39:51so they make the deal but if you told
- 00:39:55them you don't have to give me that
- 00:39:56money that I'll take that
- 00:39:58equity on the back end when it sells
- 00:40:00when the real money
- 00:40:02comes they'll go yeah because to at that
- 00:40:07point how your yours the equity that you
- 00:40:10have like V they had employees that they
- 00:40:14had provided stock options
- 00:40:16for
- 00:40:17and working class folks living in
- 00:40:21now so if they say wait so that
- 00:40:23imaginary stock [ __ ] that you gave me
- 00:40:25that I can't keep count of cuz it's not
- 00:40:26going into to my bank account you saying
- 00:40:28you give me how much for that right now
- 00:40:30and I can move and Junior can have his
- 00:40:31own room and I can go get the car I want
- 00:40:33and everything right
- 00:40:35now and they sold me pieces of it they
- 00:40:38sold me pieces of it the people that
- 00:40:40they already after I had what was in the
- 00:40:42deal I picked up a few pieces from
- 00:40:44people who
- 00:40:45had some of their sh you know so that
- 00:40:49was a a really good deal but that's also
- 00:40:52financial literacy cuz from what I've
- 00:40:54heard maybe you know more about this but
- 00:40:55um they had proach test before and they
- 00:40:59offered him the same deal but he didn't
- 00:41:01understand equity and he wanted money
- 00:41:03and they didn't really was in a position
- 00:41:04to give him the money that he wanted so
- 00:41:06he turned it down and you took the
- 00:41:08equity but that's because he probably
- 00:41:10didn't have the understanding like you
- 00:41:11said of right what Equity is and just
- 00:41:14where he was at at that point in his
- 00:41:16career like you know
- 00:41:17basketball everything's to check so they
- 00:41:20look at the last check they came like
- 00:41:22when I I did business with rbk with G
- 00:41:25and the sneakers made over $ million
- 00:41:28during that time period with Paul
- 00:41:29fireman over it right well then nobody
- 00:41:32collaps for that God
- 00:41:33damn it's a everyday thing like
- 00:41:38what but but while I was there the deal
- 00:41:41only took place because of
- 00:41:43LeBron that's why I say like me and
- 00:41:45LeBron I'll be like we 03 baby class of
- 00:41:4803 you don't even know why I feel like
- 00:41:50that but when rbk lost when they lost
- 00:41:54the bid War for LeBron cuz Nike and
- 00:41:57ended up making a deal with him for10
- 00:41:59million they had $80 million sitting
- 00:42:02there Paul fan decided to do lifestyle
- 00:42:04Brandon with myself Jay-Z and Daddy
- 00:42:08Yankee and I just kept coming back for
- 00:42:12money every three months I kept saying
- 00:42:13to him look I'm a highrisk
- 00:42:15investment yo it's going good I'm a
- 00:42:18highrisk
- 00:42:19investment yo we are doing so good how
- 00:42:22many shoes we sell I'm a high-risk
- 00:42:25investment and I kept leaving with the
- 00:42:26money I was like yo you know I just
- 00:42:28don't want you to be in a in a bad spot
- 00:42:30you know I might say the wrong thing and
- 00:42:31then everything just be [ __ ] up all
- 00:42:35right then I start telling them the
- 00:42:37stuff that my publicist told me right
- 00:42:38cuz she told me two things you don't say
- 00:42:40you don't say nothing about
- 00:42:42religion and you stay away from politics
- 00:42:46right cuz no matter what your beliefs
- 00:42:47are someone passionately disagrees with
- 00:42:50you all right so you don't you just stay
- 00:42:52away from that and
- 00:42:55then if you don't believe she was
- 00:42:58correct all you have to do is ask
- 00:43:00[Laughter]
- 00:43:05Kanye that's what he did oh went to
- 00:43:08politics he did both I think he did both
- 00:43:11went to politics and then he went and
- 00:43:12said some [ __ ] about the a couple
- 00:43:16people easy now you notice I didn't say
- 00:43:19that [ __ ] right your public is
- 00:43:25backstage yeah
- 00:43:28B when we when we had dinner with you
- 00:43:29you said something that was profound you
- 00:43:30said I don't want a problem but if if
- 00:43:33there's a problem there no problem yeah
- 00:43:35people look at you as a bully I don't
- 00:43:38know you know they miss the person
- 00:43:40irritating
- 00:43:42me this perspective they didn't see that
- 00:43:44part perspective they see my response to
- 00:43:47the person and I look and I go what
- 00:43:51the
- 00:43:52oh you think I ain't got time to [ __ ]
- 00:43:54with you
- 00:44:01a lot of it it it doesn't make sense a
- 00:44:04lot of it doesn't there's
- 00:44:06no gratification out of it I just like
- 00:44:09sometime people want attention I say
- 00:44:10well here's more attention than you want
- 00:44:13so now you feel so [ __ ] uncomfortable
- 00:44:14that you wish you didn't do that don't
- 00:44:17you
- 00:44:19and it's just a concept it's a
- 00:44:22personality it's a character
- 00:44:24flaw that I have and look don't think
- 00:44:28you w in a part of how it developed
- 00:44:30because you were participating on social
- 00:44:32media and gave me these
- 00:44:34Habits Stay for you know you got people
- 00:44:38if someone's across the street right
- 00:44:39they look at you and they just don't
- 00:44:40like you for whatever reasons right
- 00:44:43weird in vest bestest people got on
- 00:44:45their good clothes and
- 00:44:48[ __ ] I
- 00:44:52se I seen Steve Harvey backstage he had
- 00:44:55on a Gator jacket
- 00:44:59dat the shoes I said where you was going
- 00:45:00[Laughter]
- 00:45:03[ __ ] I felt so underdressed that I got
- 00:45:06to embarrass
- 00:45:11him [ __ ] that he didn't have to do that
- 00:45:13to
- 00:45:14[Laughter]
- 00:45:17me are y'all enjoying
- 00:45:21yourself that's a
- 00:45:25DJ are you not in the
- 00:45:28[Laughter]
- 00:45:32hanged F we we touched on street for but
- 00:45:38I think people overlooked what really
- 00:45:40happened right you had humor right you
- 00:45:44had Harmony but you had our community
- 00:45:49down there to celebrate each other to
- 00:45:52find a new demographic a new region talk
- 00:45:55about what goes into preparing for
- 00:45:57something like that obviously we've done
- 00:45:58invest Fest everybody's here shout out's
- 00:46:00here but this is a lot of work man talk
- 00:46:02about that it's look to start what sent
- 00:46:06me to treport is the tax incentive right
- 00:46:10the tax incentive around filming allows
- 00:46:12me to do things that I wouldn't be able
- 00:46:14to do in other territories right and
- 00:46:17they had the tax incent there they
- 00:46:19pulled it and people migrated to Atlanta
- 00:46:22some of them here from
- 00:46:23SHP that like two two people back there
- 00:46:26yeah
- 00:46:27two more and other people don't want you
- 00:46:30to know they from shet
- 00:46:32boy look look but they migrated to other
- 00:46:36territories where they could work in the
- 00:46:37same
- 00:46:38field and and and do what they was doing
- 00:46:40cuz they had the film in there and then
- 00:46:44when I get out there I see the
- 00:46:46facilities it does it is like I had to
- 00:46:48put 20 20 yeah 20 something million
- 00:46:51dollars into the studio for it to work
- 00:46:54so if you don't have
- 00:46:57it's a lot of
- 00:47:00capital but if you don't have the the
- 00:47:02finances to invest in the studio and
- 00:47:04then the actual projects that are up
- 00:47:06that allow you to bring new projects
- 00:47:08into the in and out the building then it
- 00:47:12wouldn't make sense for you to go out to
- 00:47:14shreport right I I'll film I just filmed
- 00:47:17in Bulgaria man I'll film wherever the
- 00:47:19movie is being made this is why a and
- 00:47:21them moved out there cuz they were
- 00:47:23provided tax and C the government
- 00:47:25finances to allow them to do different
- 00:47:27things and
- 00:47:28then the downtown when I went downtown I
- 00:47:31was like oh [ __ ] like it looked like the
- 00:47:33the vampires ate the
- 00:47:34[Laughter]
- 00:47:37people I'm like where's everybody at
- 00:47:40it's fly cuz the city is still a nice
- 00:47:42city like it doesn't look old at all but
- 00:47:45it just was no people and I'm
- 00:47:48like I will have this place falling with
- 00:47:51people see
- 00:47:53because when you think about like
- 00:47:55Burning Man
- 00:47:57they in the desert they went to the
- 00:47:59desert to have a Music
- 00:48:02Experience so I'm like it's just
- 00:48:04entertainment that will bring the
- 00:48:06people and in order to uh I made some
- 00:48:10purchases downtown because got to
- 00:48:13revitalize some things that are down
- 00:48:14there and then you going see sh going to
- 00:48:17be a hot spot after I get rolling
- 00:48:19because I'll have film projects out
- 00:48:21there so you have multiple cast members
- 00:48:23and people out in the about but I got to
- 00:48:25get everything else down there so
- 00:48:27working human Harmony was my first
- 00:48:29examle it's it is a proven model
- 00:48:33now that it works you know and yeah I I
- 00:48:38I bring it up just because I obviously
- 00:48:40there was some criticism some from uh
- 00:48:42streetport uh resident but what was
- 00:48:45overlooked was the jobs that you're
