00:00:02
so you might be wondering what it's like
00:00:04
to go to school for surgical technology
00:00:05
well stay tuned I'll give you all the
00:00:08
Gory details
00:00:10
[Music]
00:00:17
the best way to become a surgical
00:00:18
technologist is to attend an accredited
00:00:21
surgical technology program because this
00:00:23
will give you the most options and
00:00:25
opportunities when you graduate an
00:00:27
accredited program is one where a
00:00:29
National Organization regularly checks
00:00:31
to make sure that you are getting the
00:00:33
best education possible and it certifies
00:00:36
that the program is doing a good job you
00:00:39
can find a program near You by visiting
00:00:41
the K Hep or abhes websites and
00:00:43
searching for surgical technology
00:00:45
programs
00:00:47
so what's it like completing one of
00:00:48
these surgical technology programs at an
00:00:50
accredited school as of January 2022 all
00:00:54
surgical technology programs have to be
00:00:56
are mandated to be associate degree
00:00:58
programs this means the program will run
00:01:01
on average between 15 and 24 months
00:01:04
in your foundational classes you'll
00:01:06
learn Anatomy the names and locations of
00:01:08
parts of the body physiology how these
00:01:11
parts actually work medical terminology
00:01:14
the fancy names for all of these parts
00:01:16
and microbiology about the germs that
00:01:19
can infect these parts
00:01:21
your surgical technology classes will be
00:01:23
divided three ways you will have
00:01:25
lectures labs and clinicals the first
00:01:28
half of your surgical tech lectures
00:01:30
covers important background information
00:01:32
such as information about patients laws
00:01:36
about the or rooms equipment and
00:01:38
hospitals and basic surgical Concepts
00:01:41
like wound closure and healing and how a
00:01:44
typical case proceeds the second half of
00:01:47
your lectures get into details of common
00:01:49
surgical procedures lectures will
00:01:51
require that you both understand and
00:01:54
apply concepts for example how do the
00:01:56
properties of laser light help achieve
00:01:58
surgical goals and memorize information
00:02:01
what is dantroline used for
00:02:04
so here's a study hint when you get to
00:02:06
that part of your lectures where you're
00:02:07
learning about the procedures themselves
00:02:09
well I've created a bunch of videos on
00:02:12
this channel that both review anatomy
00:02:14
and physiology and preview the
00:02:17
procedures themselves
00:02:19
I guess I didn't realize how
00:02:27
how about what can only be used on the
00:02:29
liver the instrumentation and so it's a
00:02:33
lot more pieces to the puzzle that you
00:02:34
don't realize are there
00:02:36
then in many of these programs there are
00:02:38
two different types of labs one of which
00:02:40
is the instrumentation lab and I hope
00:02:43
your memorization skills are good
00:02:44
because you're going to have to learn to
00:02:46
identify a lot of different surgical
00:02:48
instruments and what do I mean by a lot
00:02:51
well this is just chapter one
00:02:55
the second type of lab is a skills lab
00:02:58
it's a practice operating room
00:03:01
this is where you'll learn how to
00:03:02
maintain a sterile field you'll learn
00:03:04
key skills like flipping opening gowning
00:03:07
and gloving and how to move and just
00:03:10
grab those
00:03:12
lab is all about movement the work of a
00:03:15
surgical technologist is a dance and
00:03:17
this is where you'll learn the
00:03:18
choreography the lab was a lot of fun to
00:03:21
me personally learning all the new
00:03:22
techniques
00:03:24
I had never flipped gloves before or
00:03:27
anything else for that matter it wasn't
00:03:29
just like book work it was a hands-on
00:03:32
experience for lab to be able to
00:03:34
practice like how to open your gown and
00:03:36
gloves how to set up a table that's not
00:03:38
something that you can just read from a
00:03:41
book and know how to do the Hands-On
00:03:43
stuff is how you get it because talking
00:03:45
about it
00:03:46
no sir you have to actually do it and do
00:03:50
it like literally do it a hundred times
00:03:52
before it just is with you it's like
00:03:56
Muscle Man
00:03:57
then once your instructor feels like
00:03:59
your skills are good enough that you
00:04:01
won't contaminate anything you'll get to
00:04:03
go to a real hospital and not just see
00:04:05
but actually participate in real
00:04:08
surgeries did you guys know this is my
00:04:11
is my surgery reductor
00:04:12
now for me my first day of clinicals
00:04:15
that first day that I got to help with a
00:04:17
real surgery that was one of the most
00:04:19
memorable days of my life
00:04:22
for most new texts this is such a rush
00:04:24
such a high that you can't stop thinking
00:04:27
about it and you want to do whatever you
00:04:28
can to get back in there and you will
00:04:31
because you're required to be actively
00:04:33
involved in over 100 real surgeries
00:04:36
before you graduate
00:04:37
and this is a minimum in fact most
00:04:40
surgical programs across the country the
00:04:42
students get way more than uh than this
00:04:45
particular requirement
00:04:46
everyone has strengths and weaknesses
00:04:49
and because surgical technology uses so
00:04:51
many different types of learning and
00:04:53
skills strength in one area can help
00:04:55
balance weakness in another
00:04:57
now in my case I was really good at
00:04:59
applying Concepts I was okay at moving
00:05:02
around the lab and I was lousy at
00:05:04
memorizing things but other students in
00:05:07
my class were great at memorizing things
00:05:08
While others were Naturals at moving
00:05:11
around the lab
00:05:13
as long as you have some skill in each
00:05:15
your strengths should be able to balance
00:05:17
out your weaknesses
00:05:19
all three areas are important so here's
00:05:22
a word of warning if you find that you
00:05:24
really struggle in more than one of
00:05:26
these three areas or if you're simply
00:05:28
unable to do any one of these three then
00:05:32
you'll probably find it very difficult
00:05:33
to complete this program
00:05:35
for example I would estimate and this is
00:05:38
a very rough estimate that's different
00:05:39
for different schools that about half
00:05:42
the students who start a surgical tech
00:05:44
associate's degree program will not
00:05:46
complete it on the first day of class
00:05:48
look around the room about half of the
00:05:51
people sitting there will not complete
00:05:52
the program
00:05:54
to find out the numbers for your school
00:05:56
look at your school's website compare
00:05:58
how many students are accepted into the
00:06:00
program versus how many graduate one
00:06:03
reason why many students drop out is
00:06:05
because they're simply unable to move
00:06:07
properly in the lab you will be tested
00:06:10
on your ability to set up a sterile
00:06:12
field without contaminating it if after
00:06:15
a semester or two of practice you're
00:06:17
unable to do this you won't be allowed
00:06:19
to continue in the program
00:06:21
because we have to make sure that you
00:06:22
know exactly what you're doing before we
00:06:24
let you go practice on somebody's
00:06:25
grandmother another big stumbling block
00:06:28
is anatomy and physiology often students
00:06:31
do rather well in their surgical
00:06:32
technology classes but struggle to pass
00:06:34
ANP they aren't permitted to continue in
00:06:38
the program until they pass often with a
00:06:40
C or better so I recommend taking your
00:06:42
anatomy and physiology classes before
00:06:45
you actually start the surgical
00:06:47
technology program
00:06:49
and for many students life just gets in
00:06:51
the way maybe it's financial problems or
00:06:54
family issues pregnancy or any number of
00:06:57
external events can force a student to
00:06:59
leave the program let's face it right
00:07:01
life is coming at you from all different
00:07:03
angles you're you know you've got kids
00:07:06
or family members you have bills bills
00:07:08
are a big deal right we have to pay for
00:07:10
them and uh and so I think life can get
00:07:13
in the way
00:07:14
most students who do drop out do so
00:07:16
during the first two semesters of the
00:07:18
program once you make it to the third
00:07:20
semester your chances of success are
00:07:22
high I can pretty much guarantee that
00:07:24
the program will be harder and more time
00:07:26
consuming than you probably think it
00:07:28
will be successful students need to be
00:07:31
prepared to put all social activities on
00:07:33
the back burner for the next year if a
00:07:35
student work is working and attending
00:07:38
the program there's not much time for
00:07:40
extra activities
00:07:42
um most of the students that I have work
00:07:46
and attend the program and have
00:07:48
successfully completed the program so
00:07:50
it's just a matter of what's important
00:07:53
and this has to be the most important
00:07:57
for the next year
00:07:58
depending on what your program is you
00:08:01
could be in class Monday through Friday
00:08:03
or sometimes you're in class part of the
00:08:05
week you're in lab part of the week and
00:08:07
then there's definitely no matter what
00:08:10
program you're in an at-home component
00:08:12
it takes a lot of studying but most
00:08:15
students are able to step up and meet
00:08:17
the challenge if you have kids this can
00:08:19
be even harder not impossible because
00:08:22
many have done it but it will be
00:08:24
challenging
00:08:25
you know studying and getting the work
00:08:27
done is like you're done with school so
00:08:28
you got to go the kids up and then you
00:08:30
got to bring them home and you know you
00:08:31
have to cook dinner and wash them and
00:08:33
make sure everything's ready for the
00:08:35
next day and then by the time they go to
00:08:37
bed you think oh I want to go to bed but
00:08:38
you have to do your work and studying
00:08:41
and one instructor I know tells her
00:08:43
students with children to make sure that
00:08:45
they have a plan for who will watch
00:08:47
their kids while they're in school and
00:08:49
then have a backup to that plan and then
00:08:52
have a backup to that backup because
00:08:54
you'll probably need all of that but
00:08:57
even if you end up not completing the
00:08:58
program for whatever reason it will not
00:09:01
have been a total waste you will still
00:09:03
have learned quite a lot about hospitals
00:09:05
about the or about the importance of
00:09:07
sterility and about quite a few surgical
00:09:09
instruments and with this knowledge
00:09:11
there are two jobs in particular that
00:09:14
you might be a good candidate for one is
00:09:17
a vet tech yes animals need surgery as
00:09:19
well and vets need people who love
00:09:22
animals to help them during these
00:09:24
surgeries
00:09:24
another job you would be a good
00:09:26
candidate for is in the Sterile
00:09:28
Processing Department of your local
00:09:29
hospital in Central Sterile surgical
00:09:32
instruments are cleaned repaired
00:09:34
organized wrapped sterilized and stored
00:09:37
so that they can be used again many
00:09:39
surgical techs worked in Central Sterile
00:09:41
at some point and many still do they
00:09:43
find the job fits their lifestyle and
00:09:46
personalities better
00:09:47
[Music]
00:09:54
people who easily adapt are ready for
00:09:57
something new can go with the flow and
00:09:59
can act calmly when things go awry often
00:10:02
do well as surgical technology
00:10:07
and people who like predictability order
00:10:10
repetition and in general knowing
00:10:12
exactly what to expect they tend to
00:10:15
really excel in Sterile Processing in
00:10:17
fact a really good job to have while you
00:10:19
complete your surgical technology
00:10:21
program would be in the Sterile
00:10:22
Processing department at your local
00:10:24
hospital there you will get a good head
00:10:26
start on knowing the hospital and the
00:10:28
people who work there and an especially
00:10:30
good head start on learning the names of
00:10:32
all the instruments that's something
00:10:34
that would have helped me while I was in
00:10:36
school
00:10:37
so what kind of people make good
00:10:39
Surgical technologists
00:10:40
we want students or need students who
00:10:44
are self-motivated self-driven
00:10:48
um also able to retain information have
00:10:51
thick skin have a strong sense of
00:10:54
Integrity Integrity is huge with us we
00:10:58
can spend extra time needed to teach the
00:11:01
Hands-On skills but we can't teach
00:11:03
Integrity or positive attitude the most
00:11:07
important thing as a student is for you
00:11:09
to be dedicated
00:11:11
and to be determined I have had students
00:11:15
that just graduated high school that
00:11:17
have never had a job outside of maybe
00:11:21
um you know a fast food restaurant I've
00:11:24
had students who were in their 50s and
00:11:26
60s and this was the second or third
00:11:29
career
00:11:30
I've had students who who already have
00:11:33
bachelor's degrees and I've had students
00:11:35
that have never taken College in their
00:11:37
life
00:11:38
um single moms single dads you know I've
00:11:42
had students who have had no medical
00:11:44
experience to students who who have had
00:11:47
20 years of medical experience it really
00:11:49
doesn't matter as far as the medical
00:11:51
experience goes what matters is that
00:11:54
that integrity and that positive
00:11:56
attitude and work ethic you know you're
00:11:59
going to get out of this program what
00:12:01
you put in it
00:12:02
once you decide you want to become a
00:12:04
surgical technologist and you apply to a
00:12:06
school it's usually several months
00:12:08
before you can actually start your
00:12:09
classes but you want to get started now
00:12:12
what should you do well here are my
00:12:14
recommendations the best way to get
00:12:16
ahead is to take your anatomy and
00:12:17
physiology and medical terminology
00:12:20
classes ahead of time most colleges will
00:12:23
let you start on them now while you wait
00:12:25
to start your surgical technology
00:12:27
program itself and if your program
00:12:29
doesn't require medical terminology take
00:12:32
it anyway
00:12:33
spend this time focusing on anatomy and
00:12:35
physiology and medical terminology
00:12:38
surprisingly it's your ANP and Med term
00:12:41
that will help you answer nearly half
00:12:43
the questions on the big national board
00:12:45
exam these classes are really that
00:12:48
important don't worry about the actual
00:12:51
surgical technology stuff yet because
00:12:53
every teacher does things a little bit
00:12:54
differently and ironic that I'm saying
00:12:57
this don't watch any skills videos such
00:13:00
as flipping gloves draping the Mayo
00:13:03
stand Etc I've seen students struggle
00:13:06
because they learned it one way from
00:13:07
some random video but their teacher
00:13:10
wants them to do it a different way but
00:13:12
if you're really dying to learn
00:13:13
something surgical technology related
00:13:15
you can start by learning to identify
00:13:17
your basic instruments don't worry about
00:13:19
any of the specialty instruments at this
00:13:22
point
00:13:22
so now the big question does it cost a
00:13:25
lot to go to school for surgical
00:13:26
technology
00:13:27
well that really depends on how you
00:13:29
define a lot where you live and how much
00:13:32
help you might be able to get
00:13:34
first let's look at the base price and
00:13:36
just like when buying a car the price
00:13:38
you actually end up paying may be very
00:13:40
different from the base price
00:13:42
saved a lot of money so I pay for the
00:13:44
whole program out of my own pocket
00:13:46
if you're paying completely out of
00:13:48
pocket getting an associate's degree in
00:13:50
surgical technology generally costs
00:13:52
somewhere between 8 000 on the low end
00:13:55
and 20 000 on the high end these are the
00:13:58
total costs of the program not the per
00:14:00
year costs and these base costs will
00:14:03
vary quite a bit from state to state and
00:14:05
even from school to school is that a lot
00:14:08
of money yes but compared to the cost of
00:14:10
the average bachelor's degree at a
00:14:12
four-year College which can cost several
00:14:14
times this amount technical school is
00:14:17
really a pretty good deal the program
00:14:20
itself that wasn't very expensive the
00:14:24
only thing that really came out of
00:14:26
pocket was my books especially if like
00:14:29
you have like a scholarship or anything
00:14:31
like that it covers it financial aid
00:14:35
covered half of it as well but out of
00:14:38
pocket was mainly book expenses
00:14:41
and many students will qualify for
00:14:44
Grants especially the Pell Grant which
00:14:47
can cut the price almost in half I
00:14:49
strongly recommend that you fill out the
00:14:52
FAFSA financial aid form every year even
00:14:56
if you think you might not qualify there
00:14:58
are so many grants
00:15:00
and there are so many uh different
00:15:03
avenues for financial aid and
00:15:05
scholarships most colleges have private
00:15:08
foundations that handle grants and
00:15:11
scholarships for students uh there are
00:15:14
financial aid packages out there that
00:15:16
can really help a student not just pay
00:15:19
for college but also pay for you know a
00:15:22
living while going to college
00:15:25
um and I think people don't tap into
00:15:27
those resources as often and it's
00:15:29
probably just because they don't realize
00:15:30
that they're out there
00:15:32
plus just about everyone can deduct at
00:15:35
least some of their tuition costs from
00:15:37
their federal taxes some students if
00:15:39
they do this correctly and yes paying
00:15:42
for rent and food no matter where that
00:15:44
might be counts as room and board these
00:15:47
students actually end up with a pretty
