hey guys what's up it's erica welcome
  • 00:00:02
    back to my channel
  • 00:00:03
i'm making a video talking about the 10
  • 00:00:05
worst things about cal poly slo
  • 00:00:08
i went to cal poly from 2015
  • 00:00:11
until the end of 2019. i actually loved
  • 00:00:14
    cal poly
  • 00:00:15
um i think it's a great school obviously
  • 00:00:17
    there's room for
  • 00:00:18
improvement but i thought it would be
  • 00:00:20
helpful to make a video talking about
  • 00:00:22
the worst things about cal poly if you
  • 00:00:23
are considering going these are the
  • 00:00:25
    biggest
  • 00:00:25
downfalls of cal poly that i think i did
  • 00:00:28
    talk to
  • 00:00:29
my friends and ask them like what they
  • 00:00:32
thought was the worst thing about cal
  • 00:00:34
poly the first thing that i wrote down
  • 00:00:36
as being a horrible thing about cal poly
  • 00:00:38
    is the
  • 00:00:39
lack of diversity on campus cal poly
  • 00:00:42
    is ranked the widest university
  • 00:00:46
out of all of the public schools in
  • 00:00:48
    california
  • 00:00:49
they also have the lowest percentage of
  • 00:00:52
    black students on campus
  • 00:00:53
they actually have under one percent
  • 00:00:56
population of black students on campus
  • 00:00:58
    which is like
  • 00:00:59
crazy that's not a representation of
  • 00:01:03
where we live obviously i'm white i
  • 00:01:06
    can't experience racism
  • 00:01:07
so i don't personally know but i did
  • 00:01:11
hear many stories of horrible things
  • 00:01:14
    that people said and did
  • 00:01:16
and just in general walking around and
  • 00:01:18
not seeing anybody that looks like you
  • 00:01:20
is not a great feeling yeah i would say
  • 00:01:23
that that's the worst thing about cal
  • 00:01:24
    poly
  • 00:01:25
along with that there's just a lack of
  • 00:01:27
    diverse backgrounds and ideas
  • 00:01:29
a lot of people when they visit cal poly
  • 00:01:31
slo are like wow i feel like i'm being
  • 00:01:32
    transported
  • 00:01:33
back in time and when you like first say
  • 00:01:36
that you know it just seems like oh it's
  • 00:01:37
just a small quaint town and then you
  • 00:01:39
    realize
  • 00:01:40
    it's because i don't see tons of
  • 00:01:42
    diversity on campus
  • 00:01:44
    in sexual orientation expression of
  • 00:01:46
    gender different ethnicities
  • 00:01:48
all that it's lacking a lot of diversity
  • 00:01:50
    in so many ways
  • 00:01:51
the next issue that i wrote down is that
  • 00:01:54
    housing
  • 00:01:55
is really hard to get and it's really
  • 00:01:56
    expensive my
  • 00:01:58
first year i lived on campus you do have
  • 00:02:00
an option to live on campus
  • 00:02:02
your whole time at cal poly but it's not
  • 00:02:04
    really a popular option
  • 00:02:06
most people i know move off campus their
  • 00:02:08
    second year i lived
  • 00:02:10
in a town home it's called musting
  • 00:02:11
village it's like right across the train
  • 00:02:13
    tracks from the football field
  • 00:02:15
super close to school but i think i paid
  • 00:02:18
    like 600
  • 00:02:19
to share a room and it's gone up in
  • 00:02:21
    price a lot
  • 00:02:22
after that i moved to a house it's great
  • 00:02:24
because you're in a small town like you
  • 00:02:26
    do
  • 00:02:26
get options of living in a house and
  • 00:02:28
having a backyard and all that which was
  • 00:02:30
awesome but rent is so expensive i think
  • 00:02:33
my rent was like a thousand dollars or
  • 00:02:36
something if you have like your own room
  • 00:02:38
    and slow
  • 00:02:39
you will probably pay between 700 and
  • 00:02:42
over a thousand dollars a month on rent
  • 00:02:44
there's such a small selection of houses
  • 00:02:47
around campus and it is so hard to get
  • 00:02:49
    them
  • 00:02:50
and it's really dominated by people in
  • 00:02:52
greek life the houses around campus
  • 00:02:54
are obviously everybody wants to live
  • 00:02:56
    within walking distance of campus
  • 00:02:58
people in greek life get the houses and
  • 00:03:00
    they just
  • 00:03:01
they're not like official houses but
  • 00:03:03
    they're just passed down to
  • 00:03:05
people in that house greek life really
  • 00:03:08
    kind of
  • 00:03:09
dominates and would benefit just in the
  • 00:03:12
    sense of you would have
  • 00:03:13
way more options for housing the next
  • 00:03:15
thing that i wrote down is that parking
  • 00:03:17
    is really expensive on campus
  • 00:03:19
and it's hard to park around campus
  • 00:03:21
because you need a permit pass
  • 00:03:23
there are a bunch of neighborhoods
  • 00:03:25
    around cal poly but
  • 00:03:27
you need a permit to park there so you
  • 00:03:29
can only get a permit if
  • 00:03:31
you live in the neighborhood and the
  • 00:03:33
    city gives you two passes
  • 00:03:35
when i was at school parking i think was
  • 00:03:37
    about 400
  • 00:03:38
a quarter which is really expensive it's
  • 00:03:41
also really hard to find parking
  • 00:03:43
unless you get there early in the
  • 00:03:45
morning you're going to be searching for
  • 00:03:47
parking so that's like a pain that you
  • 00:03:48
pay so much and you still
  • 00:03:50
are not guaranteed a great spot or that
  • 00:03:52
you're not going to circle for like 20
  • 00:03:54
    minutes
  • 00:03:54
the next thing i wrote about cal poly is
  • 00:03:57
    that
  • 00:03:58
flying in and out of cal poly is really
  • 00:04:00
    difficult and expensive
  • 00:04:02
most students are from in-state but cal
  • 00:04:04
poly compared to other csu campuses does
  • 00:04:06
    pull in
  • 00:04:07
way more out-of-state students than they
  • 00:04:10
    normally get
  • 00:04:11
they redid the slow airport since i was
  • 00:04:13
    a student
  • 00:04:14
there i flew out of the airport one time
  • 00:04:16
    and they only
  • 00:04:17
were going like three places and i got
  • 00:04:20
    there at like
  • 00:04:21
nine am and i had to sit outside because
  • 00:04:24
    they weren't
  • 00:04:25
open until 10 which i feel like most
  • 00:04:27
    airports
  • 00:04:28
at least since i'm from san jose and
  • 00:04:31
near san francisco airports are open 24
  • 00:04:34
    7.
  • 00:04:34
they've redone the airport and they do
  • 00:04:37
    fly more places
  • 00:04:38
    it's nicer they're definitely increasing
  • 00:04:40
the capacity at their airport but it's
  • 00:04:42
    expensive
  • 00:04:43
it's not easy to fly in and out of a lot
  • 00:04:45
of students fly into san jose or san
  • 00:04:47
    francisco
  • 00:04:48
or lax but then there's just like the
  • 00:04:50
    whole coordinating your
  • 00:04:51
ride share or a car of how to get to cal
  • 00:04:54
poly which is about three hours away
  • 00:04:56
    from all those airports
  • 00:04:57
the next thing i wrote about cal poly is
  • 00:04:59
something so many people complain about
  • 00:05:01
it is genuinely like a horrible thing
  • 00:05:03
about cal poly and they know it and they
  • 00:05:05
do not change it and it is just the food
  • 00:05:08
in general at cal poly it's just
  • 00:05:10
not good let me say that it's okay your
  • 00:05:13
    first few weeks
  • 00:05:14
but they have so little options that you
  • 00:05:17
are gonna like be so tired and so sick
  • 00:05:19
of all the food also if you have any
  • 00:05:21
    like dietary
  • 00:05:22
restrictions or follow like a certain
  • 00:05:25
    diet
  • 00:05:26
that would be really really really
  • 00:05:28
    difficult because you like
  • 00:05:30
don't really have that many options the
  • 00:05:32
    healthy option on campus
  • 00:05:33
was red radish which is like a salad
  • 00:05:35
    place but it was
  • 00:05:36
    really expensive they've changed how
  • 00:05:39
    they do their meal plans
  • 00:05:40
uh every year pretty much but one thing
  • 00:05:43
that hasn't changed is i know
  • 00:05:45
you have to pay for it your freshman
  • 00:05:47
    year
  • 00:05:48
and whatever you don't spend you don't
  • 00:05:50
give back you lose so my freshman year
  • 00:05:52
i would just buy everybody food because
  • 00:05:54
it was just going to go to waste
  • 00:05:56
if i didn't spend all my plus dollars
  • 00:05:58
back then we were on this plus dollar
  • 00:06:00
    system
  • 00:06:00
and every quarter i had extra money so
  • 00:06:03
    it would roll over
  • 00:06:04
per quarter but then by the end of my
  • 00:06:06
freshman year if i didn't use that money
  • 00:06:08
it was just like gonna go to cal poly
  • 00:06:10
    and i'd never see it
  • 00:06:11
so yeah i would just buy other people
  • 00:06:13
food i bought a bunch of random stuff
  • 00:06:15
    for me to bring home
  • 00:06:17
my freshman year i ate horribly i would
  • 00:06:19
eat a cookie for breakfast half the time
  • 00:06:21
which was like such a horrible life
  • 00:06:22
choice but that's what your freshman
  • 00:06:24
year of college is for i guess
  • 00:06:25
if you are like in any way conscious of
  • 00:06:28
what you eat and put into your body
  • 00:06:30
there are just not a lot of great
  • 00:06:31
options at cal poly the next thing i
  • 00:06:33
    wrote is that
  • 00:06:34
the campus is really hilly and it also
  • 00:06:36
has a lot of ada issues
  • 00:06:38
so if you have trouble walking or in a
  • 00:06:41
    wheelchair
  • 00:06:42
or disability that makes getting around
  • 00:06:44
    more difficult
  • 00:06:45
honestly i would rarely see students in
  • 00:06:48
    wheelchairs on campus
  • 00:06:49
probably just because they stayed away
  • 00:06:51
    from the campus because
  • 00:06:53
of how hilly it is and how little
  • 00:06:56
    accommodations
  • 00:06:57
there are there were very few classrooms
  • 00:06:58
that i ever even walked into that
  • 00:07:01
had a desk that could accommodate a
  • 00:07:04
    student in a wheelchair
  • 00:07:05
obviously it's a california state public
  • 00:07:07
    school so
  • 00:07:08
they must comply with the regulations
  • 00:07:12
but i gave a speech in an english class
  • 00:07:14
    just about
  • 00:07:15
the lack of effort that they put to even
  • 00:07:18
    making it like
  • 00:07:19
make sense like they'll have a ramp but
  • 00:07:21
    it's so far away
  • 00:07:23
and in a random spot that's like hard to
  • 00:07:25
    find
  • 00:07:26
and it's just not convenient the next
  • 00:07:29
    thing that i wrote down
  • 00:07:30
might be a good thing or a bad thing
  • 00:07:32
    there is no greek row
  • 00:07:34
and just greek life in general is not
  • 00:07:36
    huge on campus
  • 00:07:37
it's pretty big but it's not like a
  • 00:07:39
    southern school where it dominates
  • 00:07:41
most social aspects of school pretty
  • 00:07:43
    much all of the houses
  • 00:07:45
house less than 10 girls if that's
  • 00:07:47
something that like you've always wanted
  • 00:07:48
    in your college
  • 00:07:49
experience i've seen tours of greek
  • 00:07:51
    houses on youtube
  • 00:07:53
and i'll see all the southern schools
  • 00:07:55
where they have these huge rooms and
  • 00:07:56
    like
  • 00:07:57
a bathroom is like a get ready space and
  • 00:08:00
it looks amazing and that's not at all
  • 00:08:02
    what cal poly's
  • 00:08:03
greek houses are like yeah if that
  • 00:08:05
    typical
  • 00:08:06
greek row greek life experience is what
  • 00:08:08
    you're looking for in college
  • 00:08:10
cal poly offers some of it but not
  • 00:08:14
all of it if that makes sense the next
  • 00:08:16
    thing that i wrote is
  • 00:08:17
that big cities are about three hours
  • 00:08:20
    away slow
  • 00:08:21
is such a cute town it is adorable i
  • 00:08:23
    love slow
  • 00:08:24
there's so many quaint parts of it and
  • 00:08:27
    there's so much to offer
  • 00:08:28
but you can get a little bit bored and
  • 00:08:31
    if you're really into like
  • 00:08:32
events and going to concerts and
  • 00:08:36
big things like that slow does not have
  • 00:08:39
    a whole lot to
  • 00:08:40
offer and if you do want to go to those
  • 00:08:41
things you would go to la
  • 00:08:43
sometimes in santa barbara which is
  • 00:08:45
about an hour and a half away
  • 00:08:46
we'll have some bigger city event but la
  • 00:08:49
or san jose or san francisco which are
  • 00:08:52
    three hours
  • 00:08:52
away you're farther from that city life
  • 00:08:56
    scene
  • 00:08:56
and just simple things like there is no
  • 00:08:59
    maul in slo
  • 00:09:00
it's kind of nice to not have them all
  • 00:09:02
but as someone who grew up in
  • 00:09:03
a bigger city i was just not even
  • 00:09:05
expecting that like i didn't even think
  • 00:09:07
that there were places that didn't have
  • 00:09:09
    a mall
  • 00:09:09
the next thing that i wrote down kind of
  • 00:09:11
goes along with the whole greek life

    thing
  • 00:09:13
um this might be a good thing for you
  • 00:09:15
this might be not a great thing for you
  • 00:09:17
but if you're picturing that typical
  • 00:09:18
    college experience of tailgating and
  • 00:09:20
    going to football games
  • 00:09:22
cal poly has a football team there are
  • 00:09:24
    some tailgates but
  • 00:09:27
they are horrible we i never went to a
  • 00:09:29
single football game and i never felt
  • 00:09:31
like i missed out by not going i didn't
  • 00:09:32
    really know anybody that went
  • 00:09:34
maybe they went like once or twice i
  • 00:09:36
    don't love football but
  • 00:09:38
i definitely especially my freshman year
  • 00:09:40
    seeing a lot of
  • 00:09:42
friends at other colleges going to
  • 00:09:44
tailgates and just having that school
  • 00:09:46
spirit and that school pride cal poly
  • 00:09:48
has a ton of school spirit in school
  • 00:09:50
pride but our sports are not what
  • 00:09:53
motivates it so if that's something
  • 00:09:54
that's like really important to you and
  • 00:09:55
you love to watch football and
  • 00:09:57
you want that experience you're not
  • 00:10:00
really going to get that at cal poly
  • 00:10:01
the last thing that i wrote about cal
  • 00:10:03
    poly is that police
  • 00:10:05
give out tickets like crazy and
  • 00:10:08
police know that students are an easy
  • 00:10:10
    target and
  • 00:10:11
they are literally always looking not
  • 00:10:14
that much happens in slo so police use
  • 00:10:16
    students as like the opportunity
  • 00:10:18
to give out tickets with like parking on
  • 00:10:21
    a street
  • 00:10:21
they literally if you're there for 20
  • 00:10:24
minutes you're gonna get a ticket
  • 00:10:25
i saw so many people who were just like
  • 00:10:27
    riding bikes
  • 00:10:29
obviously like they were not doing
  • 00:10:30
    anything blatantly unsafe
  • 00:10:32
but they you know they're all these rule
  • 00:10:35
    i don't know i didn't ride a bike to
  • 00:10:36
    school but
  • 00:10:37
you know the rules of the road on a bike
  • 00:10:39
they would give tickets to bicyclists
  • 00:10:41
which i just think is crazy because like
  • 00:10:43
    they're helping the environment by
  • 00:10:45
biking like that's the last thing i
  • 00:10:48
    would want to discourage
  • 00:10:49
and then on campus too they're crazy
  • 00:10:51
with the tickets i mean just in general
  • 00:10:52
    like
  • 00:10:53
    noise complaints underage drinking is
  • 00:10:55
    definitely caught more
  • 00:10:57
and slow than it is at i feel like most
  • 00:10:59
other colleges yeah like most people
  • 00:11:00
will get their fake ids taken away
  • 00:11:02
like i have friends who went to school
  • 00:11:05
    in
  • 00:11:06
other states and like in bigger cities
  • 00:11:08
where you can go to the clubs when
  • 00:11:09
you're not 21 and like you don't get
  • 00:11:11
caught so like i said i loved cal poly
  • 00:11:14
slo but obviously there are downfalls to
  • 00:11:16
    every school
  • 00:11:17
and if you are trying to pick between
  • 00:11:20
    colleges
  • 00:11:21
um feel free to message me on instagram
  • 00:11:23
or leave a question in the comments i'm
  • 00:11:25
    happy to talk
  • 00:11:26
to anybody about cal poly and my
  • 00:11:28
    experience um but these are
  • 00:11:30
the 10 biggest downfalls that i could
  • 00:11:33
    think of
  • 00:11:34
i hope this video was helpful again
  • 00:11:36
