    to eat fish just once or twice a week

    the oceans will run dry our consumption

    levels in Asia are one twentieth of that

    of the US but we all want the American

    can't have it on one hand the

    government's are saying as please grow

    depends on you but on the other hand

    this sets us up for a bit of a problem

    solution to this problem lies with

    we need to educate our youth but we also

    need to get educate us about how to

    raise our awareness how to raise

    collective consciousness so that we then

    have a different relationship with

    ourselves and how we consume but also

    how we relate to each other and how we

    relate to this planet and also it

    we're the third largest stock exchange

    in the whole world we are a hub of East

    that is responsible for over half of our

    university students imagine that that's

    a big responsibility right so three

    years ago the university came to me and

    said they were setting up something

    called the centre for future ready

    graduates and you would think that

    because Singapore has the highest Pisa

    scores in the in the world that is the
  • 00:03:52
    highest global scores for English for a
  • 00:03:54
    reading for writing formats you would
  • 00:03:58
    think that we have this education thing
  • 00:03:59
    sorted but actually the truth of it is
  • 00:04:02
    that we were getting deeply worried we
  • 00:04:04
    were getting worried because students
  • 00:04:05
    were telling us we're not prepared for
  • 00:04:07
    the world and we were getting worried
  • 00:04:09
    because the employers were telling us
  • 00:04:11
    hey your students have the best scores
  • 00:04:13
    the best grades but they can't think
  • 00:04:16
    they kind of react in the real world
  • 00:04:18
    they can respond and what we found is
  • 00:04:21
    this all the research suggests
  • 00:04:25
    that grades are not correlated with
  • 00:04:28
    success what our grades correlated to
  • 00:04:31
    grades are correlated with discipline
  • 00:04:36
    conformity compliance in a world in the
  • 00:04:41
    future of robots and automation who's

    gonna be better at compliance is it
  • 00:04:47
    going to be a human or robot so this is

    when we realized that we have been
  • 00:04:51
    training our youth to be obsolete that's
  • 00:04:56
    a scary thought so that's when we

    started approaching this brave new
  • 00:05:01
    challenge number one

    what does Futurity mean if we don't know

    what the jobs of the future are if we
  • 00:05:08
    don't know what the future holds for us

    how do we prepare our youth for the
  • 00:05:12
    future so we started to speak to our
  • 00:05:14
    youth to ask them hey what what do you
  • 00:05:17
    think you might need to get ready for
  • 00:05:19
    the world of work and what we soon
  • 00:05:21
    realized that was actually way beyond
  • 00:05:23
    job anxiety there was a whole array of
  • 00:05:26
    much bigger problems that if there
  • 00:05:28
    weren't addressed would really get in
  • 00:05:30
    the way of them being ready for the
  • 00:05:32
    future first of all you all very
  • 00:05:34
    familiar with this is being so
  • 00:05:36
    distracted finding it really hard to be
  • 00:05:38
    in the present moment and also the
  • 00:05:40
    technology that can be really useful
  • 00:05:42
    sometimes getting in the way and pulling
  • 00:05:44
    our attention away and then there's been
  • 00:05:47
    a kind of paradoxical trend happening on
  • 00:05:50
    the one hand we have so many connections
  • 00:05:53
    through LinkedIn and Facebook whatever
  • 00:05:55
    app you using yeah I might ask a student
  • 00:05:57
    is here five five six hundred friends
  • 00:05:59
    but then sometimes they come to me after
  • 00:06:02
    a lecture and they say wow I've so many
  • 00:06:05
    friends on Facebook but I'm struggling
  • 00:06:07
    with my schoolwork and I don't actually
  • 00:06:09
    have anybody that I can turn to
  • 00:06:11
    face-to-face to share these concerns and
  • 00:06:13
    that leads to an epidemic of loneliness
  • 00:06:16
    and isolation amongst our students and
  • 00:06:19
    perhaps among some of us as well and
  • 00:06:21
    then there's another even more
  • 00:06:23
    concerning trend I'm a clinician and
  • 00:06:25
    psychologist as well and I've been
  • 00:06:28
    hearing from my clients and some
  • 00:06:29
    students that there's an epidemic of
  • 00:06:32
    stress and anxiety happening worrying
  • 00:06:34
    about not just aches
  • 00:06:35
    and how relationships are what the
  • 00:06:37
    future hold but also a sense of
  • 00:06:40
    helplessness and hopelessness that if
  • 00:06:42
    not kept in check can even turn into a
  • 00:06:45
    depression perhaps we're seeing trends
  • 00:06:47
    of over 30% increase in utilization of
  • 00:06:50
    mental health services on campuses
  • 00:06:53
    around Singapore in the world which is
  • 00:06:55
    really really concerning for us so we
  • 00:06:57
    knew that the solution was gonna be
  • 00:06:59
    deeper it needed to be deeper than a
  • 00:07:02
    career preparation program we so what we
  • 00:07:05
    did was that we pulled together the best
  • 00:07:07
    of the tools the techniques that we knew
  • 00:07:09
    to cope with all of this stuff and our
  • 00:07:12
    answer was a program called roots and
  • 00:07:14
    wings so roots and wings root stands for
  • 00:07:18
    Who am I

    what am I about and wings is the
  • 00:07:21
    question of like what am I here to
  • 00:07:23
    contribute what do I want to serve the
  • 00:07:26
    world with and it's based on mindfulness
  • 00:07:29
    and awareness because that's always the
  • 00:07:31
    beginning and then we layer on the
  • 00:07:34
    emotional intelligence the growth
  • 00:07:36
    mindsets the various beliefs that are
  • 00:07:38
    helpful for them and then we've also
  • 00:07:40
    included techniques from psychotherapy
  • 00:07:43
    neuroscience that can really prevent
  • 00:07:46
    these issues of anxiety and depression
  • 00:07:48
    take hold of a person's mind so we very
  • 00:07:51
    much believe preventing a problem from
  • 00:07:52
    rising is much better than trying to fix
  • 00:07:54
    it at a later stage you know we never
  • 00:07:57
    expected roots and wings to be so big

    when I first enlisted Greg on this
  • 00:08:03
    journey I went down to the psych
  • 00:08:04
    department he says a little academic in
  • 00:08:06
    this little rabbit hole room and he was
  • 00:08:08
    there working on his stuff and reading

    it I don't know what he was reading
  • 00:08:11
    anyway so I said to him you know roots
  • 00:08:14
    and wings are you gonna join me on this
  • 00:08:16
    journey and he was so excited he perked

    up and he said you know what I think

    you're onto something if we tried really

    hard maybe we could get 300 students and

    I was like you got 7,000 buddy and you

    start next week so I still haven't

    recovered so he's been completely

    traumatized I mean I ended up marrying

    the guy just to get him over this whole

    thing okay

    talk about the next challenge as we were

    doing routes anyways we ran into

    challenge number two a student came up

    to me one day and he said you know I

    love what you're doing but I don't think
  • 00:09:09
    it's gonna work and I said why he said
  • 00:09:12
    you know that empathy thing that you
  • 00:09:14
    taught me that was so depressing it was
  • 00:09:16
    wide and he said well because the thing
  • 00:09:20
    is that I realized the scales fell off
  • 00:09:23
    my eyes when I learned all this stuff
  • 00:09:25
    and I realized that it's one thing for
  • 00:09:27
    me to change but what's the point if my
  • 00:09:30
    lecturers my professors if everybody
  • 00:09:32
    else doesn't understand what I'm talking
  • 00:09:34
    about
  • 00:09:35
    like there's no point and I heard
  • 00:09:37
    stories from my medical students that
  • 00:09:39
    said yeah you know that perspective
  • 00:09:41
    shift beginners my thing that you taught
  • 00:09:43
    me well we tried that in a hospital to
  • 00:09:45
    ended up with a book thrown at my head
  • 00:09:46
    so you know that's when we realized it's
  • 00:09:49
    a whole ecosystem effort the students
  • 00:09:52
    cannot be at 3.0 and the management be
  • 00:09:57
    at 2.0 and the faculty be at 1.0
  • 00:09:59
    resisting we have to involve the whole
  • 00:10:02
    ecosystem and that's when we started
  • 00:10:04
    broadening out the conversation talking
  • 00:10:07
    to government talking to students using
  • 00:10:09
    different language for instance when we
  • 00:10:11
    spoke to government we said hey this is
  • 00:10:13
    about workforce relevance it's about
  • 00:10:15
    disruption proofing Singapore and you
  • 00:10:17
    like great take 10 million dollars so so
  • 00:10:21
    we're we spoke to educators we talked
  • 00:10:24
    about hey what's the relevance of
  • 00:10:25
    University if it's not this this is
  • 00:10:27
    innovation when we talk to industry
  • 00:10:29
    employers we said this is about prepping
  • 00:10:31
    your talent pipeline so you won't be so
  • 00:10:34
    frustrated when the Millennials get
  • 00:10:36
    there but most importantly we spoke to
  • 00:10:38
    students and we said this is for you
  • 00:10:41
    this is about meaning and joy in your
  • 00:10:45
    life and they loved it so we started
  • 00:10:48
    broadening out and working with all
  • 00:10:50
    these stakeholders and that's when we
  • 00:10:52
    realized that this is what we love so

    that's when we left the university and
  • 00:10:56
    we started forest wolf which is a mind
  • 00:10:58
    that agent change agency that works with
  • 00:11:00
    all of these stakeholders to speak their
  • 00:11:03
    language we ran into another challenge

    we realized yes we have to work broad

    with all these systems but we also found
  • 00:11:10
    out very quickly that we also had to go

    deep with our students and that we had
  • 00:11:17
    to go beyond skills so we like to use

    this iceberg metaphor so the top layer

    is really the skills that we're teaching

    but unfortunately and you may know that

    as well as often skills don't translate

    into habits they don't get integrated

    into our day-to-day life and we were

    curious to overcome that and also
  • 00:11:35
    understand why that is so and we believe

    the reason for that is because
  • 00:11:39
    underneath the surface underneath skills

    there are two broader domains that need
  • 00:11:44
    to be addressed as well the first one is
  • 00:11:45
    the mind says these are the attitudes
  • 00:11:48
    that you bring to learning these skills
  • 00:11:50
    and if you're particularly critical or
  • 00:11:53
    judgmental or if you have you don't have
  • 00:11:55
    a growth mindset you saying oh maybe I
  • 00:11:57
    will never be able to get there this is
  • 00:12:00
    gonna undermined you learning these

    skills and integrating them and then at
  • 00:12:04
    one level deeper even there is what we
  • 00:12:07
    call a sense of identity or maybe core

    beliefs and a lot of us have core

    beliefs that also can be less favorable

    or unhelpful even perhaps if you're

    inclined to think of yourself as not

    worthy or not good enough this will also

    sabotage these skills that seem useful

    and helpful from forming lifelong habits

    that really transform your life yeah

    absolutely so it boggles my mind that we

    hear so much about Futurity skills

    skills skills nobody talks about

    because it doesn't matter the best

    skills in the world but if you think I'm

    not worthy I'm not lovable this is not

    change in your life so here's what we

    more often the first one of course be

    spoken about it already is cultivating a

    and address our mind and how it can be

    more resilient healthier and also be

    able to speak about depression anxiety

    and failures and be able to distinguish

    those yeah I really believe in this

    to therapy or coming to see a counselor

    people look as if it's like oh my god

    you've got cancer what did you just say

    to de stigmatize this conversation it's

    just like going to the gym the third

    internal voices that are probably

    critical and get in the way from you

    brother and he was like straight-a

    student really really smart so growing

    up I did compare myself quite a bit to

    him and that internal limiting belief

    became one of I'm not smart enough so

    one of my limiting beliefs is that my

    mom once said just as a throwaway

    comment maybe hey crystal you're not

    creative you're just only good at

    copying other people and I don't know

    why that stuck but it was like a little

    seed

    lodged in me and I just stop saying yes

    to anything that I thought was creative

    because that wasn't me so what I want
