- 00:10:57for questions 9 to 18 complete the
- 00:10:59sentences with a word or short phrase
- 00:11:04you now have 45 seconds in which to look
- 00:11:06at part
- 00:11:122.
- 00:11:54any of you who are of my generation or
- 00:11:56older
- 00:11:57will no doubt remember the strap but for
- 00:11:59those youngsters listening
- 00:12:00i'd better explain because i'm saying
- 00:12:03this for your benefit
- 00:12:05the strap as they called it was a thick
- 00:12:08piece of leather about an inch wide
- 00:12:10and half as long as a belt and it was
- 00:12:12especially designed for hitting small
- 00:12:14children
- 00:12:15on the palms of their hands nowadays
- 00:12:18if you do something wrong at school
- 00:12:19you're unlucky if you even get a telling
- 00:12:22off
- 00:12:22and even the most serious offenses get
- 00:12:25little more than a concerned phone call
- 00:12:27from the head teacher to your mum and
- 00:12:29dad
- 00:12:30now when i was at st anne's school for
- 00:12:32girls in the 50s
- 00:12:33we didn't have things quite so easy it
- 00:12:36didn't take much to get a strapping
- 00:12:39i'll never forget the first time it
- 00:12:40happened to me
- 00:12:42one morning i came to school in the
- 00:12:44wrong shoes
- 00:12:45brown ones instead of black and that was
- 00:12:48enough for the principal
- 00:12:49to call me up in front of the whole
- 00:12:51class of children and beat my hand until
- 00:12:54it bled
- 00:12:55i saw this and many other examples of
- 00:12:57our school's discipline system
- 00:12:59as very cruel and unfair now
- 00:13:03unlike many people of that time i didn't
- 00:13:05just forget about it when my school days
- 00:13:07were over
- 00:13:09soon i had children of my own and the
- 00:13:11thought that they would one day get the
- 00:13:12same treatment
- 00:13:14really made my blood boil and that's
- 00:13:16when i heard about poppy
- 00:13:18uh parents opposed to physical
- 00:13:20punishment of infants
- 00:13:22all the other members were like me they
- 00:13:25had young children
- 00:13:26and didn't want some unfeeling teachers
- 00:13:28filling their lives with misery
- 00:13:30so we started writing letters first to
- 00:13:33the schools
- 00:13:34then to the education department and
- 00:13:36eventually to our local politicians
- 00:13:39and in 1979 the government put an end to
- 00:13:42the strap
- 00:13:43and the cane and the paddle and we
- 00:13:47thought that we had
- 00:13:48guaranteed our children the chance to
- 00:13:49grow up into fine young people
- 00:13:52and that i'm afraid did not happen my
- 00:13:55own son
- 00:13:55and daughter have turned into lazy
- 00:13:57irresponsible young adults
- 00:13:59who really have no idea how lucky they
- 00:14:01are
- 00:14:02i'm sure you all know people like them
- 00:14:05and they're not the worst by far
- 00:14:07but it's only recently that i've begun
- 00:14:10to think
- 00:14:11to wish that they'd never changed the
- 00:14:13law
- 00:14:14cruel it may have been unfair it often
- 00:14:17was
- 00:14:18but it taught us our place in society
- 00:14:20and that's something that few young
- 00:14:22people today
- 00:14:23seem to know or want to respect for
- 00:14:26example we wouldn't have all the teenage
- 00:14:28crime that goes on nowadays
- 00:14:30if those teenagers concerned had
- 00:14:33when they'd been younger being given the
- 00:14:42strap
- 00:14:46you will hear the piece again
- 00:14:49any of you who are of my generation or
- 00:14:52older
- 00:14:53will no doubt remember the strap but for

- 00:16:10really made my blood boil and that's
- 00:16:12when i heard about poppy
- 00:16:14uh parents opposed to physical
- 00:16:16punishment of
- 00:16:17infants all the other members were like
- 00:16:20me
- 00:16:20they had young children and didn't want
- 00:16:23someone feeling teachers filling their
- 00:16:24lives with misery
- 00:16:26so we started writing letters first to
- 00:16:29the schools
- 00:16:30then to the education department and
- 00:16:32eventually to our local politicians
- 00:16:35and in 1979 the government put an end to
- 00:16:38the strap
- 00:16:39and the cane and the paddle and we
- 00:16:43thought that we had guaranteed our
- 00:16:44children the chance to grow up into fine
- 00:16:47young people
- 00:16:48and that i'm afraid did not happen my
- 00:16:51own son and daughter have turned into
- 00:16:52lazy
- 00:16:53irresponsible young adults who really
- 00:16:55have no idea how lucky they are
- 00:16:58i'm sure you all know people like them
- 00:17:00and they're not the worst by far but
- 00:17:04it's only recently that i've begun to
- 00:17:06think
- 00:17:06to wish that they'd never changed the
- 00:17:09law
- 00:17:10cruel it may have been unfair it often
- 00:17:13was
- 00:17:14but it taught us our place in society
- 00:17:16and that's something that few young
- 00:17:18people today
- 00:17:19seem to know or want to respect for
- 00:17:22example
- 00:17:22we wouldn't have all the teenage crime
- 00:17:24that goes on nowadays
- 00:17:26if those teenagers concerned had
- 00:17:29when they'd been younger being given the
- 00:17:31strap
- 00:17:38that is the end of part two
- 00:17:42part two
- 00:17:48now turn to part three
- 00:17:54you will hear five different people
- 00:17:57describing different
- 00:17:58unusual musical instruments from around
- 00:18:00the world
- 00:18:02for questions 19 to 23 choose from the
- 00:18:05list a to h
- 00:18:06which speaker's instrument best fits the
- 00:18:09description given
- 00:18:10use the letters only once there are
- 00:18:14three
- 00:18:14extra letters which you do not need to
- 00:18:16use
- 00:18:18you now have 30 seconds in which to look
- 00:18:20through part 3.
- 00:18:53speaker one there are only two
- 00:18:56examples of this instrument in the world
- 00:19:00one in a museum in japan and one
- 00:19:03recently unearthed in southern china
- 00:19:06many experts do not consider it to be
- 00:19:08one instrument
- 00:19:09as it is made up of 46 silver alloy
- 00:19:12bells
- 00:19:12each suspended from its own supporting
- 00:19:15wooden frame
- 00:19:16i must mention that some of these bells
- 00:19:19weigh as much as
- 00:19:2040 kilograms what makes this assembly
- 00:19:23one
- 00:19:24instrument in my opinion is the fact
- 00:19:26that each one
- 00:19:27of the 46 bells plays a separate note
- 00:19:31and that the wooden supporting structure
- 00:19:33has been designed so that they fit
- 00:19:35together in an ascending scale
- 00:19:37rather like the strings inside a piano
- 00:19:40or the threats on the guitar
- 00:19:45speaker 2 what gives this drum
- 00:19:49its unique mellow tone is the fact that
- 00:19:51the bowl around which the skin
- 00:19:53has been stretched is made from a single
- 00:19:55piece of
- 00:19:56white ivory the outer surface of the
- 00:19:59bowl has been
- 00:20:00carved with special places for the
- 00:20:02fingers
- 00:20:03in each of these there is a hole that
- 00:20:05the player can cover
- 00:20:07with one of the fingers of his left hand
- 00:20:09to slightly alter the tone as he beats
- 00:20:11the skin
- 00:20:12with his right hand the finger movements
- 00:20:14of the left hand
- 00:20:15are not dissimilar to those used with
- 00:20:18the guitar
- 00:20:19it is perhaps rather sad that since the
- 00:20:21international trade in ivory has been
- 00:20:23made illegal
- 00:20:24few of these instruments have been made
- 00:20:27there is a risk that the tradition
- 00:20:28behind its production will soon be lost
- 00:20:32forever
- 00:20:35speaker 3 what is particularly
- 00:20:38interesting about this traditional hand
- 00:20:40drum
- 00:20:40are the unique red and gold patterns
- 00:20:42painted on its wooden underside
- 00:20:44this of course does not affect the sound
- 00:20:47but reflects the social importance of
- 00:20:49this instrument for the sachawire tribe
- 00:20:51who produce it they believe that as a
- 00:20:53result of its use in public celebrations
- 00:20:56it is filled with the good spirits of
- 00:20:57the community then later
- 00:20:59in the year when the autumn winds begin
- 00:21:01to blow the drum can be displayed
- 00:21:03outside a building of
- 00:21:04importance to drive away the evil
- 00:21:06spirits that may cause destruction in
- 00:21:08the winter ahead
- 00:21:13speaker 4 the stem and sound box of this
- 00:21:17instrument are made from the wood of the
- 00:21:19eucalyptus tree
- 00:21:20this is quite a soft wood which means
- 00:21:22that the instrument goes out of tune
- 00:21:24very rapidly
- 00:21:25the craftsmen who construct them still
- 00:21:27use stretched snake gut to make the five
- 00:21:29strings
- 00:21:30this of course makes the instrument very
- 00:21:32expensive
- 00:21:33and it was traditionally only played by
- 00:21:35tribal chiefs and their families
- 00:21:37surprisingly not only its appearance but
- 00:21:39the tuning as well are similar to that
- 00:21:41ever classical guitar
- 00:21:43suggesting that this tribe must have had
- 00:21:45some contact with the outside world
- 00:21:47long before the 20th century
- 00:21:52speaker 5 the curved base and supporting
- 00:21:57structure of this instrument
- 00:21:58are made of matured rosewood while the
- 00:22:01nails that hold the blocks are
- 00:22:03traditionally
- 00:22:04made of ebony which was the hardest wood
- 00:22:06available until recently
- 00:22:09four different trees are used to make
- 00:22:10the blocks themselves
- 00:22:12which are matured in different ways to
- 00:22:14give each one its own
- 00:22:16individual note the special hammers are
- 00:22:19fashioned by hand from willow
- 00:22:21a wood still widely used in the
- 00:22:23manufacture of guitars
- 00:22:25as a result of its construction the
- 00:22:27instrument is surprisingly light
- 00:22:30making it easy for the nobundo tribe to
- 00:22:33use it at its various social functions
- 00:22:36and annual celebrations
- 00:22:47you will hear the peace again
- 00:22:52speaker one there are only two
- 00:22:56examples of this instrument in the world

- 00:26:55now turn to part four
- 00:27:02as you are leaving an airplane at the
- 00:27:03end of a flight
- 00:27:05you overhear this conversation between a
- 00:27:07passenger and a flight attendant
- 00:27:09for questions 24 to 30 choose the best
- 00:27:13answer
- 00:27:13a b or c there will now be a pause of
- 00:27:17one minute for you to look through part
- 00:27:19four
- 00:28:18sorry you'll have to leave by the door
- 00:28:19at the front sir
- 00:28:21okay and thanks for everything have a
- 00:28:23good holiday sir
- 00:28:25well actually i'm not exactly on holiday
- 00:28:27oh
- 00:28:28do you live here well that's what i'm
- 00:28:30planning to do
- 00:28:31i'm visiting a friend who says he can
- 00:28:33get me a job
- 00:28:34so i'm going to be around this area for
- 00:28:36a bit is this your last flight today
- 00:28:39i wish it was i've already been on for
- 00:28:41five hours and i've got the return
- 00:28:43flight to come
- 00:28:44so have you got another five hours ahead
- 00:28:46of you more like five and a half
- 00:28:49and that's if there are no delays so the
- 00:28:52return flight is longer
- 00:28:53well it's the same distance but from
- 00:28:55london to athens we have a tailwind
- 00:28:57which makes it quicker
- 00:28:59but on the way back that becomes a
- 00:29:00headwind which slows us down
- 00:29:02that's a long day do you work any longer
- 00:29:06days
- 00:29:06well the longest working day is about 12
- 00:29:09hours
- 00:29:10but if there are delays at either end it
- 00:29:12can soon mount up
- 00:29:14is that 12 hours actually in the air
- 00:29:18no it's not actually flying time there's
- 00:29:20a one-hour pre-flight and a post-flight
- 00:29:23routine that we have to go through
- 00:29:24oh i don't envy you mind you i used to
- 00:29:27work
- 00:29:28nights in a hotel and that was often 12
- 00:29:30hours or more
- 00:29:31but at least it was on the ground i hope
- 00:29:35you don't mind me asking
- 00:29:37what do you do on longer flights well
- 00:29:40actually they're better
- 00:29:41anything over four and a half hours is
- 00:29:45rostered as a stopover so
- 00:29:48you do the out flight on one day and we
- 00:29:50fly back on the next
- 00:29:51and sometimes if you're lucky you even
- 00:29:54get two night stop over
- 00:29:56does that happen often about once a week
- 00:29:58usually
- 00:29:59i'm doing moscow tomorrow that's one and
- 00:30:02it's a nice place
- 00:30:03but it's a bit chilly around this time
- 00:30:05of year the weather there must be very
- 00:30:07cold
- 00:30:08do you stay there often not very often
- 00:30:11but you are right
- 00:30:12it's not the best place to be in in the
- 00:30:14winter
- 00:30:15i like warm weather spain greece and
- 00:30:18italy are my favorite countries
- 00:30:29you will hear the piece again
- 00:30:33sorry you'll have to leave by the door
