- 00:00:00Hello everyone, welcome to ECON one 101.
- 00:00:06My name is Alberto Ma. I am a professor
- 00:00:09of economics uh in in the school of
- 00:00:12economics and also the deputy director
- 00:00:15of the Shiencia education academy at
- 00:00:18UNSW. You are
- 00:00:21absolutely
- 00:00:22300% 300 billions time welcome. The
- 00:00:27first message is that we really care
- 00:00:31about our students and our first
- 00:00:32objective is to put you in the position
- 00:00:36to uh succeed. Uh we we are really
- 00:00:39thinking about that at all time and we
- 00:00:42have designed the course to be as as
- 00:00:46flexible as possible and as helpful as
- 00:00:48possible for that reason. For example,
- 00:00:51let's have a look at how we do classes.
- 00:00:54So we have these classes uh today and
- 00:00:58then uh we have another online class
- 00:01:01just like this uh later in the
- 00:01:04week and this is the stream that you are
- 00:01:07currently attending and then we are
- 00:01:09going to have a live class on campus
- 00:01:13replicate exactly what I do here but in
- 00:01:17the in the lecture theater in person
- 00:01:21that also is gonna be two uh face-toface
- 00:01:26live lectures per week but effectively
- 00:01:30you can go to any lecture you want. You
- 00:01:34can even if you're not enrolled in that
- 00:01:36particular stream. So if you want
- 00:01:39sometimes to come on campus and get into
- 00:01:42the lecture theater, please do it. If
- 00:01:45you want sometimes to just follow me
- 00:01:47online like we are doing now, uh do it.
- 00:01:51If you want to mix and match, please do
- 00:01:53that. There are no rigid rules in this
- 00:01:55course. We try to eliminate them as much
- 00:01:59as we
- 00:02:01can. It's also uh important to keep in
- 00:02:06mind that we extend this same philosophy
- 00:02:09to our workshops.
- 00:02:11uh you probably have been enrolled at
- 00:02:15this point into a specific workshop, but
- 00:02:19in reality we offer full flexibility
- 00:02:22there as well. You can go to any
- 00:02:25workshop that you
- 00:02:27want, even someone even a workshop that
- 00:02:30you're not enrolled in. And you can go
- 00:02:33to these workshops to as many of them as
- 00:02:36you want. If you want to go every day to
- 00:02:40a workshop, you can. We even have an
- 00:02:42online workshop. The idea is that we
- 00:02:46don't want to link you to a particular
- 00:02:50time or day all the time. We give you
- 00:02:54flexibility so that you can use this
- 00:02:57resource as much as possible. If you
- 00:03:00have a lot of questions one week, you
- 00:03:03can go to multiple of our workshops. And
- 00:03:06speaking of workshops, we're very proud
- 00:03:08of the team we put together. As I was
- 00:03:11telling you, Josh is not only an
- 00:03:13excellent academic students, um, but
- 00:03:17also someone that really really care
- 00:03:19about about the course and about the
- 00:03:21students coming into the course. And all
- 00:03:24our demonstrators are actually selected
- 00:03:27to be like Josh, not only very good
- 00:03:30academically, but also really ready and
- 00:03:33willing to help out people that care. So
- 00:03:37please take the workshops
- 00:03:40opportunity as much as you can and don't
- 00:03:43worry too much if you are not always
- 00:03:46going uh to your allocated workshop
- 00:03:48because the flexibility is part of um of
- 00:03:53of the experience that we want to have
- 00:03:55here. Speaking of
- 00:03:57feedback, during the the live class, I
- 00:04:01will keep an eye on the the chat, we are
- 00:04:07going to also uh post a recording of
- 00:04:12this live uh online class on the YouTube
- 00:04:16page. So, if you by any chance cannot
- 00:04:20follow me in real time one day, well, no
- 00:04:25worries. We have a recording there.
- 00:04:27Again, trying to get as flexible as
- 00:04:29possible. We know that we are very busy.
- 00:04:31Some of you are taking a lot of courses.
- 00:04:34Some of you are even taking a lot of
- 00:04:36courses plus doing some work part-time.
- 00:04:39We we do understand that the days are
- 00:04:42very intense. Our objective here is to
- 00:04:44make your life as easy as possible and
- 00:04:47to get you to be exposed to the economic
- 00:04:50concepts that that we care about.
- 00:04:55Very good. Now testing our interaction.
- 00:04:58Let me just say that there is a little
- 00:05:00bit of delay between the image that you
- 00:05:03see me that that you see on YouTube and
- 00:05:07the speed at which I read the chat. So
- 00:05:10my image reaches you with a bit of a
- 00:05:13delay. Um so when I'm reading the the
- 00:05:16the chat, I do that in real time, but
- 00:05:19you only see me with with that delay.
- 00:05:22The way I'm running uh this course and
- 00:05:25when I look at that camera, the way I'm
- 00:05:28imagining it is that I've got maybe 400
- 00:05:33students listening to me. For for some
- 00:05:35of you, this is will be the first
- 00:05:37experience at uni and that brings a lot
- 00:05:40of stress. So, if you're nervous, know
- 00:05:43that it's completely normal. Lots of
- 00:05:45people will be nervous at this point,
- 00:05:47but we are here to help you succeed. My
- 00:05:51first objective is not necessarily to
- 00:05:54teach you incredible things about
- 00:05:56economics as a first step. The first
- 00:05:58step is making sure that you get the
- 00:06:00mark that you need and that you want
- 00:06:03from this uh subject. Then once I make
- 00:06:08sure that you are absolutely in the best
- 00:06:10position to achieve what you want, I'm
- 00:06:13going to try to sneak in as much
- 00:06:14economic as possible and really try to
- 00:06:17sell the idea that economics is amazing
- 00:06:19and it's a worldchanging discipline that
- 00:06:22you should think about for your career
- 00:06:24and maybe even your studies if you are
- 00:06:27not already enrolled as as an economist
- 00:06:30to in this course. But let's face it,
- 00:06:33this is one of the biggest courses uh at
- 00:06:36UNSW Business School, one of the biggest
- 00:06:39in the school of economics and a lot of
- 00:06:41you are not necessarily people that are
- 00:06:45and enroll in an
- 00:06:49econ. So even um further reason for me
- 00:06:54to be very gentle with the course. I
- 00:06:56know that not all of you are into the
- 00:07:00economics stratosphere. You're just
- 00:07:03taking this course as a gened. You want
- 00:07:04to understand what's going on, have a
- 00:07:06feel for it. So I just know that I know
- 00:07:09where you're coming from and I'm not
- 00:07:12going to push on the accelerator or do
- 00:07:14anything
- 00:07:16strange. Very well. Uh this is a quick
- 00:07:20introduction which can be summarized
- 00:07:24into the concept of we are making this
- 00:07:27course as flexible as we humanly
- 00:07:31possibly can. But we need your help. We
- 00:07:34need your help to tell us how things are
- 00:07:35going like you're doing right now in the
- 00:07:37chat. We need your help to get the
- 00:07:41feedback that we need to you know just
- 00:07:44improve. Uh, online classes, I think
- 00:07:47they're pretty fun. I like them. I love
- 00:07:49seeing the chat, but without your voice,
- 00:07:51I cannot quite tell. I cannot quite look
- 00:07:53you in the eyes and understand what's
- 00:07:55going on. So, please let me know if you
- 00:07:58need
- 00:08:00anything. Someone is saying, "I love
- 00:08:02microeconomics, which makes me really,
- 00:08:05really happy." Uh, someone is nervous,
- 00:08:08excited, chilling. It's beautiful.
- 00:08:13Very well Josh please if I said anything
- 00:08:17on the workshops that you want to um add
- 00:08:21on please let me know I hope you don't
- 00:08:24mind that I said super flexible um of
- 00:08:28course go to your allocated workshop
- 00:08:31right but also remember you can go to
- 00:08:33any workshop multiple uh if even if you
- 00:08:37want during the week so complete freedom
- 00:08:41there speaking about
- 00:08:43flexibility. What is the thing that in a
- 00:08:46course sometimes create stress? Well,
- 00:08:49that is deadlines. You've got deadlines
- 00:08:52for this assessment, deadline for that
- 00:08:55assignment, then you have the final
- 00:08:56exam. Stress, stress, stress. In this
- 00:09:00subject, we take a different approach.
- 00:09:02We basically dispense, we get rid of
- 00:09:08deadlines completely.
- 00:09:11How does this even work? Well, I cheated
- 00:09:15a little bit. We still have a deadline
- 00:09:18which is basically the end of the
- 00:09:21course. At the very end, we have to draw
- 00:09:24the line and say you got to submit your
- 00:09:27stuff. But otherwise, we don't have any
- 00:09:30intermediary deadline. So, you don't
- 00:09:33have to worry about, oh wait, it's
- 00:09:36Tuesday and I've got that deadline for
- 00:09:38micro one again. No.
- 00:09:40uh we are going to let the other courses
- 00:09:42do that and stress you out, but we
- 00:09:46instead are going to just put everything
- 00:09:48at the end. You can do it whenever you
- 00:09:51want
- 00:09:53um at your own pace based on your
- 00:09:56schedule. Now let me say one thing a
- 00:09:59push back against this philosophy is
- 00:10:01that well how about procrastination? How
- 00:10:04about situations where a student is not
- 00:10:08completely completing the the
- 00:10:11coursework uh early enough and we have
- 00:10:14last minute cramming and then everything
- 00:10:17is is pushed back towards uh you know at
- 00:10:20at the very end of the course and and
- 00:10:22that's not good. Well, let me just say
- 00:10:24that from my experience looking at
- 00:10:27cohort after cohort of your peers, you
- 00:10:31are pretty great at scheduling your
- 00:10:33time. So this assumption that students
- 00:10:35don't know how to schedule their time
- 00:10:37actually is not quite true in my
- 00:10:40experience. You do things strategically.
- 00:10:42You sometimes don't do certain
- 00:10:44activities in a certain day. You
- 00:10:45postponed it because it may be optimal
- 00:10:48to do that. Uh in my opinion the benefit
- 00:10:51of giving you flexibility outweigh the
- 00:10:54risk of procrastination. But if you feel
- 00:10:58you are being uh falling prey of
- 00:11:02procrastination and you are beginning to
- 00:11:04worry about it, just send me an email
- 00:11:06and we can make a schedule just for you
- 00:11:09and follow up with you so that we help
- 00:11:12you hit those targets. Very important.
- 00:11:14If you or a friend of yours that maybe
- 00:11:18is not readily asking for help but you
- 00:11:22think they might need it, please contact
- 00:11:25us and we can make detailed schedules uh
- 00:11:29with madeup deadlines to help you stay
- 00:11:33on top. But for most people, try to
- 00:11:36optimize, make your own choices and you
- 00:11:38will be absolutely absolutely fine.
- 00:11:43One um aspect of Eon 101 is generally
- 00:11:49speaking the size of of the course. This
- 00:11:54is as I said a very big course and I
- 00:11:57actually love it for it. You're going to
- 00:12:00see that what we do with this particular
- 00:12:04subject is that we take advantage of
- 00:12:06that as much as possible. We are going
- 00:12:08to try to make use of all your opinions,
- 00:12:13point point of views and this will make
- 00:12:15the course much much more special. This
- 00:12:18is um a component of of our assessment
- 00:12:22which is the permarked SAQ that I will
- 00:12:24introduce in a second. But the
- 00:12:26philosophy of this course is that we are
- 00:12:29going to try to leverage the large
- 00:12:32number. So instead of being a negative
- 00:12:34thing, it's actually a positive thing.
- 00:12:38I think I can switch on now to have a
- 00:12:42look at our um Moodle web page. There we
- 00:12:46go. I'm going to put myself in the
- 00:12:49little corner of the screen down there
- 00:12:52and u just present to you our Moodle
- 00:12:57website.
- 00:13:00One of the most important things to keep
- 00:13:02in mind in Moodle because this is where
- 00:13:06I communicate with you. So really
- 00:13:08important. Tell everyone that this is
- 00:13:10really important is this course
- 00:13:12announcement and forum section. This one
- 00:13:14here course
- 00:13:16announcement. Um we can see here we got
- 00:13:21uh a few course announcements already.
- 00:13:23And this one is the one that I just
- 00:13:25wrote yesterday. Just welcoming everyone
- 00:13:28and uh setting you up for this online
- 00:13:31class. Please just check it
- 00:13:34frequently. If you don't receive emails
- 00:13:37directly when I post uh uh an
- 00:13:41announcement, please let us know because
- 00:13:43we would really like to be able to reach
- 00:13:45you with this announce. They're very
- 00:13:47important. We're going to talk about the
- 00:13:48final exam. All that stuff that matters
- 00:13:50is going to be dealt with through this
- 00:13:52announcement. So keep an eye on
- 00:13:55that. Very well. Let's go back to the
- 00:13:59general course hub. Then we have uh this
- 00:14:02part which is really important. It shows
- 00:14:05you how to sign up into uh play
- 00:14:10economics. The idea behind play
- 00:14:12economics is that we are trying to
- 00:14:14gamify as much as possible economics.
- 00:14:18And so we have a separate website where
- 00:14:20the video game is and all the game
- 00:14:22activities are together with your ebook
- 00:14:25uh the PDF of of your ebook and all the
- 00:14:28things that um you you'll find helpful
- 00:14:32for the
- 00:14:33course. This is the instruction on how
- 00:14:37to do that. And I'm going to show you in
- 00:14:39a second how to get into the pleconomics
- 00:14:42website. But for the time being, I just
- 00:14:44wanted to emphasize this part
- 00:14:49here. So the game is uh available for
- 00:14:53free in computer labs. So we occupied
- 00:14:57entire computer labs with uh PCs that
- 00:15:00can run everything, the game, which is
- 00:15:04just a way for us to make sure that you
- 00:15:06have at least a PC that can run the game
- 00:15:09if if if you want to try it. Um then we
- 00:15:12have you know all the package available
- 00:15:14from these free computers and we have
- 00:15:17designed the course this is something
- 00:15:19really important that that I really care
- 00:15:21about we have designed the course so you
- 00:15:24don't have to go many time to the
- 00:15:26computer labs you can go maybe four or
- 00:15:29five times maybe right before you go to
- 00:15:32the workshop or right after you can drop
- 00:15:35by the computer lab do a little bit of
- 00:15:38activities and if you do it four five
- 00:15:40times over the course of a term just
- 00:15:43when you come for the workshops anyway
- 00:15:46that will be absolutely fine. So don't
- 00:15:49worry about having to do a lot of trips
- 00:15:52to the computer labs. Let's say once a
- 00:15:54week when when you come for for your
- 00:15:56workshop done
- 00:15:59uh problem solved. If you want, you can
- 00:16:02also purchase an individual license. And
- 00:16:06when we receive this money, we're not
- 00:16:07using, nobody's making a profit here at
- 00:16:10all. We're just using to support the
- 00:16:12program to do tax support and uh develop
- 00:16:15the program. And we are also now, you
- 00:16:18know, extending it to high schools. We
- 00:16:20are reaching out to various high schools
- 00:16:23to try to get more and more people
- 00:16:26interested in economics. So, this is
- 00:16:28part of of the project that we are
- 00:16:30running.
- 00:16:34The website will contain everything,
- 00:16:37your textbook, all the
- 00:16:39questions. So it's basically one stop
- 00:16:42for all the things economics that that
- 00:16:44you need to know. Very well. So this was
- 00:16:47the first block here. Let me now become
- 00:16:52small again. Uh it's something important
- 00:16:54that we receive an email from you asking
- 00:16:57how to use this free computer labs.
- 00:17:00there is a procedure that we're going to
- 00:17:01explain. Um, but also for me it's
- 00:17:04important because it will allow me to
- 00:17:06know how many computers are needed. If
- 00:17:08there is a lot of demand, we can have
- 00:17:09more computer labs, more computers
- 00:17:11available. Hence, if it's very important
- 00:17:14that we keep communicating with you a
- 00:17:17little bit more as you set up your um
- 00:17:21free
- 00:17:22options. Here we have general uh general
- 00:17:26course hub. You can find uh the course
- 00:17:28announcement here and uh a few policies
- 00:17:32that are important. Just give a quick
- 00:17:35look uh so that you are up to date with
- 00:17:38the most important things. One thing
- 00:17:40that uh we have to talk about okay it's
- 00:17:44academic integrity.
- 00:17:46Um so here we are going to have all the
- 00:17:51information you need to understand
- 00:17:53including this video here to understand
- 00:17:56what is allowed at at UNSW
- 00:17:59what is the bar for academic integrity
- 00:18:04and this is not a trivial question
- 00:18:06because of course with GPT with all the
- 00:18:09technology we have today it's getting
- 00:18:11more and more blurred uh generally
- 00:18:15speaking what academic integrity means.
- 00:18:18So, please make sure you
- 00:18:21familiarize with uh these resources
- 00:18:23before you get um into ECON 101. The
- 00:18:28reason I'm saying this is that if you
- 00:18:32engage in behavior that the UNSW
- 00:18:34consider cheating, like for example,
- 00:18:37contract cheating may be the worst when
- 00:18:40you ask someone to do your homeworks for
- 00:18:42you and things like that.
- 00:18:45there is a mechanism in place where it
- 00:18:49very quickly
- 00:18:51uh gets out of my hands. So if a student
- 00:18:55for example notices a behavior or we
- 00:19:00constant constantly supervise the
- 00:19:03website with we look for uh behavior
- 00:19:06that may be construed as as cheating. As
- 00:19:09soon as any of this happen, as soon as I
- 00:19:11receive an email saying we have found an
- 00:19:13instance where we think there might be
- 00:19:15cheating going on. As soon as that
- 00:19:18happens, it's completely out of my
- 00:19:21hands. It's a central
- 00:19:24process. I have a lot of sympathy,
- 00:19:27especially for first year students
- 00:19:29coming into uni. You probably don't know
- 00:19:30exactly how harsh the punishment is,
- 00:19:33what's allowed, what's not allowed, and
- 00:19:34you're playing, you know, around the
- 00:19:37corners a little bit. But unfortunately
- 00:19:39the process is taken completely out of
- 00:19:41my hands right away and it gets
- 00:19:44escalated and at that point I have to
- 00:19:46follow the protocol and there's much
- 00:19:48nothing that I can do. So please have a
- 00:19:52read at what constitutes plagiarism or
- 00:19:55cheating and don't do it. Just please
- 00:19:59just don't do it. I know it's a
- 00:20:01temptation sometime, but just talk to
- 00:20:03your inner self and say, "Nope, I'm not
- 00:20:06going to do it." Because the penalty can
- 00:20:08be substantial and it can be something
- 00:20:12that stays with you for the entire
- 00:20:14journey at UNSW. Please don't do it. Um,
- 00:20:18have a look at this
- 00:20:19section as soon as you can. Here in this
- 00:20:23section, you have your lecture slides.
- 00:20:25They're very simple, very concise,
- 00:20:27uh, just what you need. Remember, they
- 00:20:30are not a substitute for the textbook,
- 00:20:32which I'm going to talk about in a
- 00:20:33second, but they are a great summary.
- 00:20:35And this is what I'm going to use to uh
- 00:20:38to teach the
- 00:20:39course. And then here we have the um the
- 00:20:44stream and recordings. So here we have
- 00:20:48uh all the links that you need to uh
- 00:20:51access the recording of these videos and
- 00:20:54the online classes. But as I said
- 00:20:56before, we really use YouTube. So if you
- 00:21:00can access the YouTube channel, that's
- 00:21:02all you need to do. It's very very
- 00:21:04simple, very streamlined. However, if
- 00:21:06you have trouble um you know getting
- 00:21:08into YouTube, just let us know and we're
- 00:21:11going to disseminate the the videos in
- 00:21:14some other way. So this is just the link
- 00:21:17uh to the YouTube um channel. Very well.
- 00:21:22Workshops. Here we have um our workshops
- 00:21:26and we uh explain how to access by
- 00:21:31clicking on this link our online
- 00:21:34workshops. Again, maximum flexibility.
- 00:21:37If you don't have time to come to
- 00:21:39campus, but you really wanted to ask a
- 00:21:42question to one of our demonstrators,
- 00:21:45well, Allison's is going to be there for
- 00:21:47you on Wednesday 3 p.m. on Zoom. Just
- 00:21:50click here and you are in. Hopefully
- 00:21:53this covers all the cases. Um, office
- 00:21:56hours, you can go to any stream you
- 00:21:59want. Don't need to stuck, you know,
- 00:22:01stick with the online. You can go to any
- 00:22:04stream you want and to any workshop you
- 00:22:06want. Now, who to
- 00:22:09contact? If you want course information,
- 00:22:11give a look at the course outline first.
- 00:22:14If you have problems with the
- 00:22:15Pleconomics package, send an email to
- 00:22:18support. They are super quick. They're
- 00:22:19going to get back to you immediately.
- 00:22:22And for any um academic matters such as
- 00:22:26interm marks or special consideration,
- 00:22:29please email uh
- 00:22:31ecom1101
- 00:22:33here. Given that we are talking about
- 00:22:36special
- 00:22:38considerations, let me
- 00:22:42uh say something that I I think it's
- 00:22:45really important because there is no
- 00:22:48deadline in this course. there is
- 00:22:51actually essentially the deadline is the
- 00:22:53whole course. uh we don't do special
- 00:22:56consideration by definition because
- 00:22:57there will be no extra time and there is
- 00:23:00so many there are so many opportunities
- 00:23:02for you to do the activity uh during the
- 00:23:06term that it's very hard to argue oh
- 00:23:09they didn't have time they had you know
- 00:23:12months to to do these activities so
- 00:23:15there must have been a moment where they
- 00:23:17could have found
- 00:23:19time this special consideration process
- 00:23:22it's also something out of our hands.
- 00:23:25When you ask for special consideration,
- 00:23:27we are going to say yes, absolutely. And
- 00:23:29we are going to start the process for
- 00:23:31you. It's going to be handled centrally
- 00:23:34and we are going to communicate with
- 00:23:36them. But ultimately, they're going to
- 00:23:37look at our course and say, well, is
- 00:23:40there a reason? Is this special
- 00:23:42consideration request reasonable?
- 00:23:45uh and it's very very hard to motivate
- 00:23:48uh a request for an extension in our
- 00:23:51course because the deadline is the whole
- 00:23:54course. So please keep this in mind.
- 00:23:56Tell all your friends there's not going
- 00:23:58to be really an opportunity to push
- 00:24:00those deadlines. Those dead deadlines
- 00:24:02are pushed as much as
- 00:24:04we humanly possibly can. So, just do
- 00:24:10your best to stay within those deadlines
- 00:24:11because an extension is most likely not
- 00:24:14going to happen. This is an important
- 00:24:17message because I hate to find
- 00:24:20situations where a student thought that
- 00:24:24maybe they could push the deadline a
- 00:24:26little bit uh when in practice that
- 00:24:29cannot happen because of the way we
- 00:24:31structure the c the subject the course.
- 00:24:35Let me show you how to sign up into the
- 00:24:37Pleconomics website and get started with
- 00:24:41that stuff so that we can get that final
- 00:24:44part of admin out of the way and we can
- 00:24:46just talk a little bit about economics
- 00:24:49and just get a little introduction to
- 00:24:51that in this
- 00:24:53class.
- 00:24:55Fantastic. Let's have a look at the
- 00:24:57pleconomics page. So you
- 00:25:00um access this
- 00:25:02website by uh typing
- 00:25:06playeconomics.com. You're going to be
- 00:25:08here. There's a little video. Uh we talk
- 00:25:11a little bit about what are the
- 00:25:13principles in our philosophy with this
- 00:25:15video game that we are developing uh for
- 00:25:17the course and in general how we use the
- 00:25:21the website as well. And this is the
- 00:25:24outreach education program that we care
- 00:25:26a lot about as well when we reach out to
- 00:25:29high school particular particularly
- 00:25:32underresourced high school and we we
- 00:25:34give them a hand with with some ecom
- 00:25:36content a bit of gallery uh our
- 00:25:39collaborators. Okay. But and we won some
- 00:25:41awards not to brag but we did pretty
- 00:25:43good so far. Now going up here uh this
- 00:25:47is the sign up page. So you just go in
- 00:25:50follow the instructions in Moodle. First
- 00:25:52name, last name, student ID, email.
- 00:25:55Remember to input the email exactly as
- 00:25:57we show in Moodle. Otherwise, you're not
- 00:25:59going to go through. Some of these
- 00:26:01fields are not uh necessary. So you just
- 00:26:05um need to fill up the most uh the uh
- 00:26:09one with an asterisk and then you just
- 00:26:12submit and you get into the website.
- 00:26:15When when that happens, you're going to
- 00:26:18be asked to choose a password. Then if
- 00:26:22you go back to uh the Pleconomics page,
- 00:26:26let me let me go here. And you log in.
- 00:26:29Then you kind of land in this page here.
- 00:26:32And you just need to enter your the the
- 00:26:35same email address that that you use uh
- 00:26:38to sign up and your password that you
- 00:26:41will have just freshly created.
- 00:26:44When you click submit, you are going to
- 00:26:46notice that immediately we give you a
- 00:26:48little monster icon. These are
- 00:26:51randomized, procedurally generated. If
- 00:26:54you don't like it, send us an email. We
- 00:26:55can send you a different one. Um, here
- 00:26:59you're going to be able to see your
- 00:27:00courses. In this case, this Ecom101
- 00:27:03course. Um,
- 00:27:07and then you're going to be able to
- 00:27:10um click this button here and get into
- 00:27:14the course
- 00:27:16itself. Here's the university, the
- 00:27:19course that you're taking, the start and
- 00:27:21end date. And from here, you can do two
- 00:27:24things. You can launch the online
- 00:27:27course, which is where the all the
- 00:27:28action is, or you can access the PDF.
- 00:27:32And the PDF is just um the PDF version
- 00:27:36of your ebook. So just the ebook all in
- 00:27:40PDF form. Say you you like to take notes
- 00:27:42or you like to read on a train uh
- 00:27:45paper. We have it. I want to say
- 00:27:48something about this very quickly. The
- 00:27:51textbook covers everything that is
- 00:27:54examinable. So there is nothing in the
- 00:27:56textbook that is not examinable. But we
- 00:27:58also keep kept the textbook as short as
- 00:28:02possible. I am using there as few words
- 00:28:06as I possibly
- 00:28:08can. So we are just shrinking it to the
- 00:28:11most sizable um possible measure and we
- 00:28:16hope you enjoyed it. It's it's very very
- 00:28:18streamlined. It should be easy to read.
- 00:28:20It shouldn't take you too long. So
- 00:28:22that's the PDF version of your readbook.
- 00:28:25Uh for example, if you go to the free
- 00:28:27computer labs, you can download this and
- 00:28:29you basically have your textbook already
- 00:28:32ready for for for the entire term. If if
- 00:28:35I press launch online
- 00:28:37course, I will be
- 00:28:39redirected to your ebook. Here it is.
- 00:28:44Super simple. So this is me, a test
- 00:28:47student here. Um I've got you're going
- 00:28:51to see your your name um here. One thing
- 00:28:54that I want you Oh, actually, sorry. I
- 00:28:57am I haven't showed you that. So, if I
- 00:29:01if I click launch online course here, my
- 00:29:04picture was big and in the way. Launch
- 00:29:06online course, you end up here. This is
- 00:29:08your um you know, avatar if you want.
- 00:29:12And by clicking here, I can then select
- 00:29:15preferences. Um, and I'm suggesting, you
- 00:29:18know, you choose what you want to do,
- 00:29:20but you can get notified when everybody
- 00:29:22reply to one of your posts or notified
- 00:29:25when um someone reply or or post
- 00:29:28anything. Uh, for example, this one,
- 00:29:31right? You literally are notified
- 00:29:32whenever anyone posts a message in here.
- 00:29:35Helpful if you want to really be up to
- 00:29:37date with this. Uh, and also you can
- 00:29:39have notification when your, you know,
- 00:29:41answers the short answer questions that
- 00:29:43I'm going to talk about in a second. uh
- 00:29:46are had had been graded and you can
- 00:29:48basically track the entire process of
- 00:29:51your SAQ journey uh if you want uh by um
- 00:29:56toggling on these notifications. By
- 00:29:59default they are not toggled on. So by
- 00:30:01default they are not but if you want to
- 00:30:04have that extra notification you can.
- 00:30:07Then you're going to here have here at
- 00:30:09the top you're going to see the course
- 00:30:11marks that you can achieve uh in within
- 00:30:15the ebook activities which are up to 45
- 00:30:20marks. So by doing the ebook activities
- 00:30:23during the term, no deadlines, you're
- 00:30:26going to get up to 45 marks if you want.
- 00:30:29And then the next 55 marks that sum up
- 00:30:33to 100 are going to be achieved by um a
- 00:30:38final exam which we're going to give you
- 00:30:40a lot more information. It's going to be
- 00:30:42a final exam that happens at the very
- 00:30:44end of the course.
- 00:30:47Now exploring this a little bit more.
- 00:30:50Let's have a look at the course details.
- 00:30:52Uh first thing first stop is this one.
- 00:30:55Welcome to ECO101. Please leave a
- 00:30:57message uh here. Just introduce
- 00:31:01yourself. You can see that some students
- 00:31:03have already started. I also started I I
- 00:31:06posted a picture of me one year ago and
- 00:31:09as you can see I tried to get the same
- 00:31:11shirt on. Um but clearly I need a
- 00:31:14haircut. I I think I definitely need a
- 00:31:16haircut at this point. This was me one
- 00:31:19year ago. Very well. This is welcome to
- 00:31:23Eco101. We have here a section showing
- 00:31:26you how to navigate the website. Uh
- 00:31:30navigating is really simple. Your
- 00:31:32progress is up here. Um, then for each
- 00:31:34chapter, you're going to have a little
- 00:31:36icon here that's going to tell you when
- 00:31:39the chapter is going to open and also
- 00:31:43what is the deadline for answering
- 00:31:45multiple choice questions or submitting
- 00:31:47SAQs. And you can see that all these
- 00:31:50deadlines are in two months, two months,
- 00:31:53two months, three months because all our
- 00:31:55deadlines are at the end of the term.
- 00:31:57But I still wanted you to know exactly
- 00:32:00how many days you have until the
- 00:32:01deadline at any time. So just hover this
- 00:32:04icon here and you're going to learn
- 00:32:06that. Also here you can see how many
- 00:32:09activities you have completed within
- 00:32:11this chapter. Um and here you're going
- 00:32:14to see how many activities you have
- 00:32:16complete within this particular section
- 00:32:19of the chapter your first model. And as
- 00:32:21I said, I'm going to open more and more
- 00:32:23chapters and more and more section as we
- 00:32:26go with the course because I want to to
- 00:32:29just uh you know give out each section
- 00:32:35uh you know at a time to make sure that
- 00:32:38we are all focusing on the content that
- 00:32:41is more focal at a certain point of the
- 00:32:44course. So I'm going to just update
- 00:32:45constantly uh here. Okay. So this was
- 00:32:48how to navigate the course. Then we have
- 00:32:50a getting started section. Here you have
- 00:32:53a course outline
- 00:32:55um where it's a super short version of
- 00:32:58your course outline. Very digestible,
- 00:33:01easy to read, just the most important
- 00:33:03things. So if you click on this link,
- 00:33:05you're going to see a very very short
- 00:33:08summary of the the course outline with
- 00:33:11the main thing like the final exam
- 00:33:14information, the academia information,
- 00:33:17um the you know the due dates,
- 00:33:19everything very condensed, very much
- 00:33:22simplified. Then you also have a weekly
- 00:33:25checklist where we suggest if you click
- 00:33:28on this link what to do in week one.
- 00:33:30have a have a read at the concept, read
- 00:33:33the chapter, uh try the the questions
- 00:33:36and and so on so forth plus in one place
- 00:33:40also your lecture slides for
- 00:33:43um for simplicity so that you can just
- 00:33:46navigate this very quickly. Then we have
- 00:33:49the assessment. We have here uh a little
- 00:33:53summary of of the assess the assessments
- 00:33:55that we have available in this course.
- 00:33:59And finally down here we have the
- 00:34:01textbook PDF again a link uh share
- 00:34:05anything. This leads you to a section
- 00:34:07section where where you can post any
- 00:34:10comment. Hello right there. If you want
- 00:34:13to share anything you can use that one.
- 00:34:16Finally we have these two sections at
- 00:34:18the end about this project and about
- 00:34:19this author explaining why we're doing
- 00:34:21what we're doing uh with with this
- 00:34:23gamified approach uh for ecom
- 00:34:26101. Very well. This is
- 00:34:31the just a quick touch base on the uh
- 00:34:36course structure and let's have a a a
- 00:34:40quick look now at what's happening in
- 00:34:43this chapter one. So in chapter one you
- 00:34:46will see that at the moment I have this
- 00:34:48coming soon section. Okay, this will
- 00:34:50come in later but at the moment we have
- 00:34:53just one section open for simplicity to
- 00:34:55get everybody on board. And this is my
- 00:34:57first message. I'll basically send a
- 00:35:00message every time I open I open new
- 00:35:02sections. And I'm just going to put it
- 00:35:04there up there. So the first thing you
- 00:35:06see is me just giving you some
- 00:35:08information about how the course is
- 00:35:10going, what this content is going to be
- 00:35:12about, how how we are doing collectively
- 00:35:15as we as we take the class. And right
- 00:35:19here I have two boxes and and I think
- 00:35:22these are really important where I
- 00:35:24explain to you how many course marks
- 00:35:26have you made so far. Really fleshing
- 00:35:29out how these are acred and also how
- 00:35:34exactly the points that you get for
- 00:35:36example from uh playing the game
- 00:35:38activities and the multiple choice
- 00:35:40questions transform translates into
- 00:35:43course mark. So hopefully this is
- 00:35:45completely self-explanatory. It's going
- 00:35:48to be in every section. I'm sorry for
- 00:35:50the repetition but I am trying to be as
- 00:35:53clear as possible so that everybody
- 00:35:55understand okay that's how I make my
- 00:35:58points and you have an interesting
- 00:36:01example in this first section of of that
- 00:36:05exact strategy. So you are going to have
- 00:36:08a little bit of content and then in line
- 00:36:12you are going to find your first
- 00:36:14multiplechoice question
- 00:36:17uh just tailor to that particular
- 00:36:20content that that you just read. If you
- 00:36:23submit and you uh get
- 00:36:31it, you
- 00:36:33know, you you can actually do trial and
- 00:36:36error. So, I didn't have time. I I just
- 00:36:38gained one point during doing this
- 00:36:40multiple choice question. You're not
- 00:36:42penalized for multiple attempts. This is
- 00:36:44really just a formative assessment.
- 00:36:47Okay. And and with that going on, you
- 00:36:49can see now that in this box, this box
- 00:36:52has been updated
- 00:36:54uh to actually say you have obtained one
- 00:36:58multiplechoice point by answering one
- 00:37:00multiplechoice question. So this gets
- 00:37:02updated in real time so that every
- 00:37:05activity that you do in your course as
- 00:37:09part of the ebook is counted here. You
- 00:37:11can track it and then it will end up
- 00:37:14affecting your course marks. You can see
- 00:37:16here that it went up a little bit and uh
- 00:37:19here I'm explaining how multiple choice
- 00:37:22points
- 00:37:23um are you know translating into course
- 00:37:26mark. So hopefully this is really simple
- 00:37:29just one section to start with and you
- 00:37:31can experiment with the multiplechoice
- 00:37:34question.
- 00:37:36A very important part of this course is
- 00:37:41another type of assessment that you're
- 00:37:43gonna find in academia as well which is
- 00:37:48the short answer question peer marked.
- 00:37:51In that activity, which we call a cap a
- 00:37:54capstone activity, you're going to be
- 00:37:56asked to pick a journal article and uh
- 00:38:01that talks about a certain concept in
- 00:38:03economics that that you want to
- 00:38:05describe. Then you're going to explain
- 00:38:07how that article pertains to the concept
- 00:38:09and then your uh work is going to be
- 00:38:12peermarked by other students of course
- 00:38:14invigilated by us. So your job there
- 00:38:17with that particular SAQ assessment is
- 00:38:20not only to answer the question but also
- 00:38:22to mark other students. I'm going to
- 00:38:25give you a lot more information about
- 00:38:27the short answer question component as
- 00:38:30we open that part of the ebook. I'm
- 00:38:32going to open that capstone activity and
- 00:38:34I'm going to go through a lot a lot of
- 00:38:36detail on exactly how to submit these
- 00:38:39things, how the marking process happens.
- 00:38:42It will be all seamlessly integrated in
- 00:38:45this platform. So this is the only place
- 00:38:47you're going to have to go. I want to
- 00:38:49spend one second talking about this peer
- 00:38:52marking component. We are going to have
- 00:38:55detailed explanations of how this works
- 00:38:57when we open those chapters in in this
- 00:39:00online classes. I'm going to give you
- 00:39:02also example of great short answer
- 00:39:04questions and so on so forth. H and also
- 00:39:08in your
- 00:39:09workshops, your demonstrators are going
- 00:39:12to go through an example of a short
- 00:39:14answer question. They're going to help
- 00:39:15you see how to write it, how to grade
- 00:39:18other other students. So, it's going to
- 00:39:20all be part of the workshop. If you want
- 00:39:22to know more about it, you just have to
- 00:39:23go to a workshop and um lies with with
- 00:39:28your demonstrator. But the question is
- 00:39:30why do we do this peer marking
- 00:39:33component? Let me start by saying that
- 00:39:36that's not an easy component to have in
- 00:39:38in a course.
- 00:39:40uh when you are tasked with grading
- 00:39:43other students and when you see the
- 00:39:46feedback that they give you in turn, you
- 00:39:49may get a little bit upset sometimes and
- 00:39:52you know because it's very
- 00:39:56hard to accept
- 00:39:58criticism and it's maybe even harder to
- 00:40:02pay criticism to someone without
- 00:40:05triggering them, making it essentially
- 00:40:08constructive criticism that helps the
- 00:40:11author of an answer. So, how do we
- 00:40:13receive criticism and how do we give
- 00:40:16criticism or or or feedback to other
- 00:40:19people is incredibly important in life.
- 00:40:23when you're gonna finish up uni and
- 00:40:26you're going to get in into your uh job
- 00:40:30of of choice or career path of choice,
- 00:40:34you're going to see that one of the
- 00:40:35first thing you'll discover is that the
- 00:40:38world is rarely black and
- 00:40:42white. People will have different
- 00:40:45opinions about what is more important
- 00:40:48than the rest. Conflicting point of
- 00:40:52view. you're gonna be put into
- 00:40:54conference rooms where people are kind
- 00:40:56of debating the pros and cons. There's
- 00:40:59no black and white question because you
- 00:41:02know everybody has different ways to see
- 00:41:04the world. It's really important to
- 00:41:06start recognizing that different points
- 00:41:08of view and accept when people are
- 00:41:12challenging our our work and also uh be
- 00:41:16able to challenge their work without
- 00:41:18triggering and and basically stopping
- 00:41:20the conversation. I think this is a
- 00:41:23fundamental professional skill and
- 00:41:26that's why we have this component in the
- 00:41:29course. Uh the course is incredibly
- 00:41:32flexible in the sense that if you want
- 00:41:34you could get full marks just by doing
- 00:41:37this short answer question peer marked.
- 00:41:39You you could get
- 00:41:4145 out of 100 which is the amount that
- 00:41:45you can get in term from the uh website
- 00:41:48just by doing SAQs. But if you want, you
- 00:41:51can mix it up with multiple choice
- 00:41:53questions or game activities. So, it's
- 00:41:56really up to you. If if you take a look
- 00:41:58here, I explained this. You can
- 00:42:01literally mix up your points. Uh, sorry,
- 00:42:06I'm not here. You can literally mix up
- 00:42:09your points between multiple choice
- 00:42:11questions and game activities. And later
- 00:42:12on, you will see also um short answer
- 00:42:16questions. So if the game is not exactly
- 00:42:19your bread and butter, you don't have to
- 00:42:21play. You can just do a lot more of
- 00:42:23these SAQs focusing on the news. If you
- 00:42:26like multiple choice question, you you
- 00:42:29can tackle that. Uh very open-ended.
- 00:42:32Again, another layer of flexibility.
- 00:42:35Come to any class, come to any workshop,
- 00:42:37do it anytime you want. But also select
- 00:42:40your own journey. If there is an
- 00:42:42assessment that you really think it's
- 00:42:44helping you because you have a specific
- 00:42:47learning style, do more of that. Go for
- 00:42:49it. If you want to mix, mix it. Very,
- 00:42:52very flexible. And hopefully this
- 00:42:54information here gives you all the
- 00:42:56answers. But if you still have
- 00:42:57questions, do not hesitate to send us an
- 00:42:59email to the Ecom101 account or come to
- 00:43:02the workshops. In theory, I think after
- 00:43:05doing these activities today, you will,
- 00:43:08you know, go out of this thinking, okay,
- 00:43:10I actually know how this is going to
- 00:43:12work. They're going to open sections in
- 00:43:13the ebook and then they're going to ask
- 00:43:15us to do some activities and um I can
- 00:43:18see immediately my points, so no stress
- 00:43:21whatsoever. And if you want to use the
- 00:43:23free computer, maybe come next week when
- 00:43:26your workshop is or when you're coming
- 00:43:27to uni anyway and go to the lab and
- 00:43:30you're going to see that the first
- 00:43:31chapter is going to be completely open
- 00:43:33at that point and just do all the
- 00:43:34activities in one
- 00:43:37shot. Perfect. At the end here, you see
- 00:43:40we have a we have exam practice
- 00:43:42question. We're going to talk more about
- 00:43:44this later on, but you can see we don't
- 00:43:47go subtle on this. Look how many exam
- 00:43:50practice questions we have. That's a lot
- 00:43:52of them. Um, this is because we want you
- 00:43:56to be really really prepared for that
- 00:43:57final exam and we are going to propose a
- 00:44:02lot of questions. In fact, we can open
- 00:44:04even more questions later on or more
- 00:44:06challenging one as we approach the final
- 00:44:08exam to make sure you are 100%
- 00:44:11comfortable when you get when you sit
- 00:44:13that exam. You know exactly what's going
- 00:44:15to happen. you have been able to test
- 00:44:16and have practice exams uh enough for
- 00:44:20you to know exactly what's going on and
- 00:44:22how things are going to shape shape up.
- 00:44:24Finally, we have additional information
- 00:44:26here. Again, this is the team. Any page
- 00:44:29here you can comment, right? So, I'm
- 00:44:31going to say another hello here. Any
- 00:44:33single page you can comment and the
- 00:44:36demonstrators and myself are always
- 00:44:38taking a look at the website. I have
- 00:44:40those preferences toggled on so I
- 00:44:42receive a notification all the time. So
- 00:44:45please do not hesitate just uh do that
- 00:44:48anytime. Uh we have the course schedule
- 00:44:51here. Uh you can see in every week what
- 00:44:53we're going to do and what workshops are
- 00:44:56are going to be uh focusing on. Um then
- 00:45:00we have the class schedule and we have
- 00:45:03also the pass schedule. Um pass is an
- 00:45:06amazing program. It's basically other
- 00:45:10students offering to spend time with
- 00:45:12you, more senior than you, of course,
- 00:45:14and experienced, offering to help you
- 00:45:16out with any problem that you have, your
- 00:45:20homeworks, any anything that that you
- 00:45:22may need. Here is all the information. I
- 00:45:24love this program. It's one of my
- 00:45:26favorite because it's actually students
- 00:45:28helping students. You can see here um
- 00:45:31the past leader name, the location. So
- 00:45:34if you want something even more informal
- 00:45:37than our workshops which are very
- 00:45:39informal uh you can go to the pass um
- 00:45:43initiative as well and these guys are
- 00:45:46working with us so they're absolutely up
- 00:45:48to speed with everything we're doing and
- 00:45:50they are they are excellent. So please
- 00:45:52consider uh joining them. Finally if you
- 00:45:55need help all the information and the
- 00:45:58emails uh to to contact us. Very well.
- 00:46:03This was your first look at the ebook
- 00:46:07with a particular focus on
- 00:46:09multiplechoice questions activities. We
- 00:46:12will open more section and as we do that
- 00:46:15you're also as I said going to be
- 00:46:17exposed to the short answer question
- 00:46:19peer marking and you'll be able to start
- 00:46:21doing those activities as
- 00:46:23well. This is
- 00:46:26uh all in all all you need to know. This
- 00:46:29is the place you do all your
- 00:46:31assessments. you prepare for the final
- 00:46:33exam all in one place. We hope it's as
- 00:46:36seamless as possible, as simple as
- 00:46:38possible. The stream aid online and the
- 00:46:42face toface stream um in person, these
- 00:46:46are covering
- 00:46:48exactly the same material. In fact, we
- 00:46:52don't even record our live classes. We
- 00:46:54don't record them because the quality of
- 00:46:57the recording is not quite right. This
- 00:46:59is the best way to record a class for
- 00:47:02for online and I'm going to do exactly
- 00:47:05what I do in the live class. So if you
- 00:47:08come to this one, you're going to get
- 00:47:10the same exact amount of information in
- 00:47:12the same time period. So every class is
- 00:47:15going to have the same content. So it's
- 00:47:17not that one class is going to go faster
- 00:47:19than the other. They're going to be
- 00:47:20contained within the same time frame for
- 00:47:23content. You can in fact skip a live
- 00:47:26class and come to the online vice versas
- 00:47:29everything you
- 00:47:31need. The thing that I would like to
- 00:47:34talk about today is essentially just a
- 00:47:39quick introduction of what economics is
- 00:47:42what what the subject is all about. Let
- 00:47:45me ask you a question because you
- 00:47:47probably have a lot of ideas about
- 00:47:50economics. One question that I have for
- 00:47:52you is could economics be about love
- 00:47:57just about two people in love. Is there
- 00:48:01anything in that situation that can be
- 00:48:05seen as
- 00:48:07economics? If you can give
- 00:48:11me if you can give me a quick answer in
- 00:48:14in the chat that would be great. Is
- 00:48:17um economics about love?
- 00:48:23I'm going to start like explaining a
- 00:48:27possible situation. Uh yes, I've got the
- 00:48:31first answer. The answer is yes.
- 00:48:34And I'm glad possibly. Yes. You usually
- 00:48:40think economics is about money or supply
- 00:48:43and demand but actually economics is
- 00:48:47about almost any decision we make every
- 00:48:52day. So there is no single decision in
- 00:48:55your life that is not an economic
- 00:48:57decision. So this is the first
- 00:49:00preconception that I would like to take
- 00:49:02off your head and and just throw it
- 00:49:05somewhere else. Economics is really
- 00:49:08about anything. Someone is saying no.
- 00:49:11And I do understand why you would say
- 00:49:13no. But let me explain why pol economics
- 00:49:17is. Sorry. Economics can be about
- 00:49:19literally any action, any choice that we
- 00:49:22make during the day. Imagine the world
- 00:49:24has been completely destroyed.
- 00:49:26Everybody's dead except yourself sitting
- 00:49:31in Sydney and someone else who could be
- 00:49:35an absolutely perfect partner for you.
- 00:49:37So it's complete distraction. Only you
- 00:49:40two are surviving but you are in Sydney
- 00:49:44and your soulmate, this perfect partner
- 00:49:46is actually in Europe. Let me ask
- 00:49:49quickly on the chat. Are you going to
- 00:49:52travel to Europe even though there are
- 00:49:54no trains? There's no airplanes, no
- 00:49:57boats anymore. You're going to have to
- 00:49:58be very inventive. Would you travel for
- 00:50:01love? Would you travel the other side of
- 00:50:05the world in this situation just because
- 00:50:08you have your
- 00:50:09soulmate and you can have the
- 00:50:13opportunity of experiencing the perfect
- 00:50:16relationship in your lifetime? What what
- 00:50:19what do you say? So I am I'm I'm seeing
- 00:50:24a lot of people saying
- 00:50:25no.
- 00:50:27Um so I I think a lot of people are
- 00:50:30saying no I would not travel to Europe.
- 00:50:34So someone is saying yes definitely
- 00:50:36someone in says depends. Someone is
- 00:50:39saying it's possible
- 00:50:41um split the journey 5050. You see you
- 00:50:45see what I'm talking about. Even when it
- 00:50:47comes to things like love, which is very
- 00:50:50pure and very abstract in its
- 00:50:53conception, you still need to make
- 00:50:55decisions about love. Should I go to
- 00:50:57Europe or not? And some people uh are
- 00:51:01just saying no, Sydney for life in the
- 00:51:03sense that no, I'm not going to travel
- 00:51:05the world. And so right there,
- 00:51:08sacrificing pure love, that's an
- 00:51:10economic
- 00:51:12decision. But imagine that you have um
- 00:51:16infinite time, right? So, imagine a
- 00:51:20world that where there is no scarcity,
- 00:51:23no scarcity whatsoever, no scarcity at
- 00:51:27all. Um, would
- 00:51:30you still be making economic
- 00:51:34decisions if there is no limitation? You
- 00:51:38can travel for free, teleport. Well, it
- 00:51:41turns out that there is something about
- 00:51:43ourselves, our
- 00:51:45preferences that even with infinite
- 00:51:49resources still would force us to make
- 00:51:52economic decision. For example, I give
- 00:51:54you the first ice cream, you probably
- 00:51:56love it. Just just shout out in the in
- 00:51:59the in in the chat what would be the
- 00:52:01happiness that you would achieve if I
- 00:52:03gave you one ice cream. Just a number. I
- 00:52:06give you now one ice cream out of 10.
- 00:52:09How much happy would that make you? Now
- 00:52:13the ice cream is free. You can have as
- 00:52:15many as you want. Now I'm giving you a
- 00:52:17second ice cream. Okay. So just write
- 00:52:20the second and then tell me how much
- 00:52:22happiness you would get from that second
- 00:52:25ice cream. How about I continue giving
- 00:52:27you a third and a fourth and a fifth.
- 00:52:30You might reach a point where you're
- 00:52:32like, Alberto, stop it. Stop it. Please.
- 00:52:34This ice cream is killing me all this
- 00:52:36sugar. So your ability to appreciate
- 00:52:40life for almost any activity that we do
- 00:52:43in life is decreasing. There are
- 00:52:46decreasing returns for most activities.
- 00:52:48And now let me give you another example.
- 00:52:51Soulmates, right? Suppose you can go to
- 00:52:54Europe for free and meet your soulmate.
- 00:52:57The first love experience might be
- 00:52:59great, but how about I give you two
- 00:53:02soulmates? Okay, maybe you would be
- 00:53:04happy. How about three soulmates?
- 00:53:08four soulmates, five soulmates. There
- 00:53:11might be a point where your ability to
- 00:53:13appreciate a relationship even in an
- 00:53:16infinite world with infinite resources
- 00:53:19might actually make you tell me please
- 00:53:24no more perfect soulmates. I was good at
- 00:53:27three or I was good at one. You don't
- 00:53:30need to give me a hundreds of them. And
- 00:53:32this is something really deep into our
- 00:53:34nature. We appreciate things but if
- 00:53:38there is too much of them we tend to
- 00:53:41like them less and
- 00:53:43less because of this reason almost every
- 00:53:48action that we take is economic decision
- 00:53:53making. So this is my interpretation for
- 00:53:56you and the first piece of economic
- 00:53:58content that I want to propose in this
- 00:54:01course that every single choice that we
- 00:54:03make in life all of them are economics
- 00:54:07because we are always trading off
- 00:54:09something even if we live in this
- 00:54:12perfect world you would have to tell me
- 00:54:14probably and think about oh Alberto
- 00:54:17let's settle for three ice creams and
- 00:54:20one soulmate for example you would have
- 00:54:23to make that econom economic decision
- 00:54:25even in that situation and I'm going to
- 00:54:28just conclude now by uh saying this the
- 00:54:34objective of economics is to improve the
- 00:54:38world. So everything that e economists
- 00:54:41do do in an attempt to increase the
- 00:54:45happiness of the planet and solve some
- 00:54:48of the problem we are facing. This is
- 00:54:51the objective of economics and we are
- 00:54:54going to talk about simple ways in which
- 00:54:56we can improve the world. But we are
- 00:55:00going to see that sometimes improving
- 00:55:02the world is hard because it needs
- 00:55:04people to coordinate. and we are going
- 00:55:07to tackle what are the main problems
- 00:55:10that make changing the world for uh
- 00:55:13better difficult and how together as a
- 00:55:16society we can overcome that and
- 00:55:19improve. I have to say I am very
- 00:55:22optimistic because your generation seems
- 00:55:25to be a lot more intelligent, prepared
- 00:55:29and switched on on the idea. Yes, let's
- 00:55:32improve the world as a concept. more and
- 00:55:36more I see this this push and this drive
- 00:55:39and I'm pretty sure that you will be
- 00:55:42able to make meaningful impact and in
- 00:55:45this course we are going to tackle what
- 00:55:48are the main issues preventing us from
- 00:55:51doing it but also figure out quite
- 00:55:54simple ways in which this can be done if
- 00:55:58we can come together as people and we
- 00:56:00can coordinate our
- 00:56:02actions very well everybody
- 00:56:07Uh, thanks so much.
- 00:56:11Um, I'm seeing laughters in in the chat.
- 00:56:14I think everything is going
- 00:56:16well. As I promised, I wanted to wrap it
- 00:56:20up 10 minutes early so that you can have
- 00:56:23a little bit of time to go where you
- 00:56:24need to go.
- 00:56:26And um on on Thursday in our next uh
- 00:56:31online class we are going to take it
- 00:56:34from here and we are going to start
- 00:56:36looking into the content of chapter one
- 00:56:39go through the concepts and I'll I'll be
- 00:56:42using an iPad to annotate so that you
- 00:56:45can see the derivation of all the graphs
- 00:56:47and again we're going to try to be as
- 00:56:49inclusive as possible. It was
- 00:56:54amazing, amazing to see you and I'm
- 00:56:58gonna see you really, really, really
- 00:57:00soon in a couple of days or in person.
- 00:57:03See you later everyone. Thank you so
- 00:57:05much for coming to our first class. Have
- 00:57:08a great great day and see you super
- 00:57:13super
