Timeline
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
The speaker introduces a walkthrough for answering the 2021 Edexcel English Language Paper 1 Exam. It highlights that Section A involves analyzing one text and answering four questions. The speaker plans to show how to write model responses for these questions while encouraging viewers to download a past paper for practice.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
The text involves Sir Michael Audley, a rich baronet, proposing to Lucy, who is from a poorer background. There's a tension between social class differences and genuine love. The speaker reflects on pathetic fallacy in the text that suggests a dark mood and the dramatic reaction of Lucy which indicates her reluctance due to her poverty-stricken background.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
Lucy's dialogue reveals her internal conflict about the marriage proposal. She flatters Sir Michael, acknowledges the practical benefits of marrying him due to her poverty but hesitates over concerns about love and sincerity. The speaker points out the power shift in dialogue, with Sir Michael, though in a socially higher position, appearing vulnerable and dependent on Lucy’s response.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
The narrative demonstrates Sir Michael's internal struggle with the possibility that Lucy might reject him. This is illustrated through his silent moments and disappointed emotions despite Lucy's acceptance. The extract concludes with hints about Lucy's past and an unexplained ring, raising questions about her motivations and true feelings.
- 00:20:00 - 00:28:48
The speaker provides model answers for the exam questions. They analyze how language and structure depict Sir Michael's conflicting feelings and the shifting power dynamics with Lucy. Emphasis is placed on using techniques like dialogue, metaphors, and complex sentence structures to understand the characters' emotions and relationships. An in-depth approach is advised for achieving high marks.

- 00:00:02hello and welcome now no a number of you
- 00:00:04guys who follow this channel are
- 00:00:06actually sitting the Edexcel English
- 00:00:08language and English Literature Exam
- 00:00:10syllabus as opposed to AQA or the other
- 00:00:12exam boards so what I wanted to do was
- 00:00:15to offer you guys a complete walkthrough
- 00:00:17of how to answer section A of the
- 00:00:21language paper one exam and more
- 00:00:23specifically I want to show you how you
- 00:00:24can answer the 2021 Edexcel language
- 00:00:29paper one exam and as I mentioned this
- 00:00:32is going to be a complete walkthrough
- 00:00:33for questions one to four so remember
- 00:00:36when it comes to section A in the
- 00:00:38edexole language paper one exam you
- 00:00:40always get just one insert okay you're
- 00:00:42given one text to look at and analyze
- 00:00:44and also talk about an answer for the
- 00:00:47first four questions before you move on
- 00:00:49to section B which is the imaginative
- 00:00:50writing question where you've got a
- 00:00:52choice of two questions okay one of them
- 00:00:54is just a statement the other is an
- 00:00:55image you pick one don't do both and
- 00:00:57then you answer the questions based on
- 00:00:58that so what I wanted to do was to give
- 00:01:01you guys a complete walkthrough of how
- 00:01:03to answer the 2021 exam and if you do
- 00:01:07want to also download a copy of this
- 00:01:09past paper I've also included it in the
- 00:01:11link below okay you can download it for
- 00:01:13free and you can also use it if you want
- 00:01:14to practice and apply some of this
- 00:01:16information the model answers that I've
- 00:01:17written to your own private practice
- 00:01:19okay so let's get into how to answer
- 00:01:22these questions okay I'm literally gonna
- 00:01:24walk you through literally my thought
- 00:01:26process as I read the insert and then of
- 00:01:28course how you can write model responses
- 00:01:30and what the model sponsors look like
- 00:01:32for questions one two three and four
- 00:01:35so let's tackle this language paper one
- 00:01:37past paper so obviously remember that
- 00:01:39you always get just one fiction extract
- 00:01:41and then you've got to answer four
- 00:01:42questions based on that and then your
- 00:01:44fifth or sixth question okay so you get
- 00:01:46a choice with imaginative writing you
- 00:01:49then need to write a creative story or
- 00:01:51something based on the image okay now
- 00:01:54let's look at this extract okay the
- 00:01:57insert that you are given and I'll kind
- 00:01:59of walk you through my thought process
- 00:02:00before reading this insert I'm not going
- 00:02:02to start with the questions because I've
- 00:02:03actually prepared these questions okay
- 00:02:04so then I'm going to show you the actual
- 00:02:06model responses that are prepared for
- 00:02:08all four questions related to this
- 00:02:09insert however what I want to do is
- 00:02:12Begin by reading through this insert and
- 00:02:14then diving into the responses for all
- 00:02:17five questions now remember of course as
- 00:02:19I mentioned you get one extract it's
- 00:02:22made up it's a fiction extract
- 00:02:24and then you need to read that with um
- 00:02:26you know the questions in mind at the
- 00:02:28back of your mind but also as you're
- 00:02:29reading through it you're thinking okay
- 00:02:31so what really stands out okay when
- 00:02:33you're thinking about also language and
- 00:02:34structure what stands out structurally
- 00:02:36how we're supposed to feel as readers
- 00:02:37okay so you're always given a blurb and
- 00:02:40a little bit of context at the opening
- 00:02:42of the extract okay in this case we're
- 00:02:44told in this extract Sir Michael orderly
- 00:02:48a rich baronet okay there's a star here
- 00:02:51meaning that this is a word that the
- 00:02:52examiners don't expect you to know what
- 00:02:54it means so you are given the meaning
- 00:02:56here so it's a title like a lord
- 00:02:58indicating his rich and a man in high
- 00:03:00position in society okay so here going
- 00:03:03back to this in the section Sir Michael
- 00:03:05audlia Rich baronet has just asked Lucy
- 00:03:08another character to marry him he has
- 00:03:10fallen in love with her despite the fact
- 00:03:11that she comes from a poorer background
- 00:03:13and as much younger than him he wants
- 00:03:17her to marry him for love not for his
- 00:03:20wealth and his place in society so this
- 00:03:22is interesting this is kind of I guess a
- 00:03:24story about class about this man who is
- 00:03:28evidently quite Rich whilst he hopes
- 00:03:30that this woman that he's in love with
- 00:03:32um loves him back not based on his money
- 00:03:34but actually she generally loves him so
- 00:03:37uh this is the name of the book lady
- 00:03:39orderly secret Mary Elizabeth Braden
- 00:03:43okay so this is the surname of the
- 00:03:44author when you're writing about the
- 00:03:46author or the writer effect you could
- 00:03:48either say the writer the author or you
- 00:03:50can refer to their surname never the
- 00:03:51first name but their surname so let's
- 00:03:53have a look
- 00:03:54she did not remove her gaze from the
- 00:03:56darkening Countryside but so for some
- 00:03:59moments was quite silent interesting
- 00:04:01pathetic fallacy from the opening okay
- 00:04:04so pathetic fallacy here it's darkening
- 00:04:06is it supposed to establish a negative
- 00:04:08mood
- 00:04:09then turning to him with a sudden
- 00:04:11passion in her manner that lighted up
- 00:04:14her face with a new and wonderful Beauty
- 00:04:16which the baronet perceived even in the
- 00:04:18glowing growing Twilight she fell on her
- 00:04:21knees at his feet okay so this is a very
- 00:04:24dramatic reaction and again pathetic
- 00:04:26fallacy is mentioned twice darkening
- 00:04:28Countryside but also this idea of
- 00:04:31Twilight this weird time during the day
- 00:04:33where it's kind of dark but also not too
- 00:04:36dark okay kind of like 4 or 5 p.m in the
- 00:04:38evening so here she's thinking this
- 00:04:40woman okay so presumably Lucy she's
- 00:04:42thinking and then she's reacting really
- 00:04:44really dramatically to um you know maybe
- 00:04:46what she's been told
- 00:04:48no Lucy no no he cried
- 00:04:51vehemently not hair not hair again
- 00:04:54vehemently is another new word so you
- 00:04:56just quickly look at the glossary
- 00:04:57vehemently means speaking with passion
- 00:04:59and intensity
- 00:05:01not hair not hair
- 00:05:03yes hair hair she said the strange
- 00:05:06passion which agitated her making her
- 00:05:08voice sound shrill and piercing not loud
- 00:05:11but distinct here and nowhere else how
- 00:05:14good you are how Noble how generous so
- 00:05:16here she's basically speaking in a very
- 00:05:18assertive way and she's also flattering
- 00:05:21this guy
- 00:05:22love you why the women 100 times my
- 00:05:25superiors and beauty and in goodness who
- 00:05:27might love you dearly but you ask too
- 00:05:30much of me interesting so she's saying
- 00:05:33um you're asking too much of me again
- 00:05:35presumably maybe she's saying oh
- 00:05:37um you want me to marry you that's
- 00:05:39asking too much
- 00:05:40remember what my life has been only
- 00:05:42remember that from my very babyhood I've
- 00:05:45never seen anything but poverty so she's
- 00:05:47telling him that she's always being poor
- 00:05:49my father was a gentleman clever
- 00:05:51accomplished handsome but poor and what
- 00:05:54a pitiful wretch poverty made of him my
- 00:05:58mother but don't do not let me speak of
- 00:06:00her poverty trials and vexations again
- 00:06:03vexations is another word that we're not
- 00:06:05supposed to be familiar with it means
- 00:06:06worries so she's basically saying that
- 00:06:08her parents as well as her struggled
- 00:06:10with poverty since she was a baby
- 00:06:11poverty trials vexations humiliations
- 00:06:14deprivations
- 00:06:16you cannot tell you who are among those
- 00:06:18for whom life is so smooth and easy you
- 00:06:22can never guess what is endured by such
- 00:06:24as we do not ask too much of me then I
- 00:06:28cannot be disinterested
- 00:06:29I cannot be blind to the advantages of
- 00:06:33such a marriage I cannot I cannot so
- 00:06:35she's basically saying look I understand
- 00:06:37that you know you're quite rich and
- 00:06:39someone like me who's really poor I
- 00:06:41literally you know it would be a massive
- 00:06:42advantage to me to marry you but what
- 00:06:44she's basically saying here and this is
- 00:06:46what I'd be thinking as I'm reading
- 00:06:47through this is she's kind of reluctant
- 00:06:49to marry him because she feels like
- 00:06:51maybe he's too good for her
- 00:06:53Beyond her agitation and a passion
- 00:06:55passionate vehements there is an
- 00:06:58undefined something in her manner which
- 00:07:00fills the baronet with a vague alarm so
- 00:07:03the baronet is like oh she can accept my
- 00:07:05proposal
- 00:07:06she is still on the ground at his feet
- 00:07:09crouching rather than kneeling
- 00:07:12her thin white dress cling about her her
- 00:07:15pale hair streaming over her shoulders
- 00:07:17her great blue eyes glittering in the
- 00:07:19dusk more pathetic fallacy and her hands
- 00:07:21clutching at the black ribbon around her
- 00:07:23throat as if it had been strangling her
- 00:07:26do not ask too much of me she kept
- 00:07:28repeating so she's basically saying look
- 00:07:30you're asking too much of Me by asking
- 00:07:31me to marry you I've been selfish for my
- 00:07:34babyhood
- 00:07:34Lucy Lucy speak plainly do you dislike
- 00:07:38me so here we can see that there's it's
- 00:07:40really interesting so even if Lucy
- 00:07:42initially falls on her knees basically
- 00:07:43kind of begging him and an issue we
- 00:07:45think that okay so there's a clear power
- 00:07:47difference between them okay so Lucy's
- 00:07:49the one that's kind of begging him
- 00:07:50actually she's the one that seems to be
- 00:07:52having way more power than this baronet
- 00:07:55because he's now speaking and he's like
- 00:07:57oh my gosh do you like me okay so this
- 00:07:59is shown through this dialogue just like
- 00:08:01you no no but is there anyone else whom
- 00:08:04you love she laughed aloud at this
- 00:08:06question I do not love anyone else in
- 00:08:07this world she answered he was glad of
- 00:08:10her reply and yet that and the strange
- 00:08:12laugh Jarred upon his feelings so here
- 00:08:15we can now see that the baronet this guy
- 00:08:17Sir Michael Audley is desperate for her
- 00:08:20to just give him something more please
- 00:08:22tell me that you like me okay so here
- 00:08:24there's an interesting power shift
- 00:08:25that's very subtle
- 00:08:27he was silent for some moments and then
- 00:08:29said with the kind of effort well Lucy I
- 00:08:31will not ask too much of you I dare say
- 00:08:33I'm an old romantic fool but if you do
- 00:08:36not dislike me and if you do not love
- 00:08:38anyone else I see no reason why we
- 00:08:40should not make a very happy couple is
- 00:08:44it a bargain Lucy so here he's begging
- 00:08:46her he's basically saying look I'm old
- 00:08:48you know I understand that maybe I'm not
- 00:08:50as sprightly and as handsome as some of
- 00:08:51these other guys that you'll you know
- 00:08:53that might be after you but I really
- 00:08:55want you to marry me again we can see
- 00:08:57that he's kind of been reduced to
- 00:08:58position of begging even if she's the
- 00:09:00one that's on her knees okay so there's
- 00:09:02um the author is kind of reversing some
- 00:09:04of our assumptions
- 00:09:07yes the baronet lifted her in her arms
- 00:09:10and kissed her once upon the forehead
- 00:09:11then quietly bitten her good night he
- 00:09:14walked straight out of the house so she
- 00:09:15gives him a very brief monosyllabic
- 00:09:17response she's not like you know she
- 00:09:19doesn't seem extremely excited about
- 00:09:21marrying this really rich guy who's
- 00:09:22clearly gonna change her social status
- 00:09:24and her position in society
- 00:09:27he walked straight out of the house this
- 00:09:29foolish old man because there was some
- 00:09:32strong emotion at work in his wrist
- 00:09:34neither Joy nor Triumph but something
- 00:09:36almost akin to disappointment some
- 00:09:39stifled and unsatisfied longing which
- 00:09:41lay heavy and dull in his heart as if he
- 00:09:44had carried a corpse in his bosom so
- 00:09:47this is an interesting simile he even if
- 00:09:49she says yes he kind of still doesn't
- 00:09:51feel convinced and he feels like almost
- 00:09:52these feelings of Happiness are dead in
- 00:09:55his heart
- 00:09:56he carried the corpse alliteration of
- 00:10:00that hope which had died at the sound of
- 00:10:03Lucy's words there's a lot of death
- 00:10:04imagery here and it's the death of his
- 00:10:06hope he's basically like oh I don't know
- 00:10:08if she likes me
- 00:10:09all the doubts and fears and timid
- 00:10:11aspirations were ended now he must be
- 00:10:13contented like other men of his age to
- 00:10:14be married for his fortune and his
- 00:10:17position so he's basically realizing
- 00:10:18maybe she doesn't really like me
- 00:10:20genuinely and even if she's saying yes I
- 00:10:22don't know whether she actually
- 00:10:23genuinely likes me for who I am
- 00:10:26Lucy Graham went slowly up the stairs to
- 00:10:29her little room at the top of the house
- 00:10:31she placed her dim Candle on the chest
- 00:10:34of drawers and seated herself on the
- 00:10:36edge of the white bed still and white as
- 00:10:38the draperies hanging around her so now
- 00:10:39we're left focusing in and zooming in on
- 00:10:42Lucy
- 00:10:43no more dependents no more drudgery no
- 00:10:45more humiliation so he's now thinking
- 00:10:47about actually now I'm gonna marry this
- 00:10:49guy I don't have to endure all of these
- 00:10:51terrible things I tend to have to put up
- 00:10:53with because I'm poor
- 00:10:56every trace of the old life melted away
- 00:10:59every clue to Identity buried and
- 00:11:01forgotten except these except these
- 00:11:03she'll never taken a left hand from the
- 00:11:04black ribbon at her throat she drew it
- 00:11:06from a bosom and now she spoke looked at
- 00:11:08the object attached to it okay
- 00:11:10interesting there's an object attached
- 00:11:12to this black ribbon around her throat
- 00:11:14it was neither a locket a miniature nor
- 00:11:17a cross it was a ring wrapped in an
- 00:11:20oblong piece of paper the paper partly
- 00:11:23written partly printed yellow with age
- 00:11:25and crumpled with much folding so this
- 00:11:27final bit here is interesting in the
- 00:11:29sense that she looks at this ring and we
- 00:11:32wonder okay
- 00:11:33um it seems like maybe was she reluctant
- 00:11:34because this ring is perhaps attached to
- 00:11:37somebody else who she really wanted to
- 00:11:39marry or is this ring related to you
- 00:11:41know maybe someone who should made a
- 00:11:42promise and she kind of feels terrible
- 00:11:44about breaking this promise we don't
- 00:11:46know but this ending is interesting and
- 00:11:48of course this extract what I'd be
- 00:11:49thinking of is we can see here at first
- 00:11:52we think that it's Lucy that has all of
- 00:11:54the um or rather it's Sir Michael
- 00:11:57orderly the rich guy he has all of the
- 00:11:59power but actually and it's even
- 00:12:00emphasized by the fact that Lucy you
- 00:12:01know is begging him on her knees and
- 00:12:03also it's emphasized by the fact that
- 00:12:05she emphasis she talks about how poor
- 00:12:07she is however as the passage progresses
- 00:12:09we actually see that he really really
- 00:12:11wants to marry her okay there's this
- 00:12:13shift in power actually it seems like
- 00:12:14it's Lucy who's like okay yes she speaks
- 00:12:17in very monosyllabic way and he still
- 00:12:20lives in a very uncertain sense okay so
- 00:12:22there's also also maybe uh um
- 00:12:24miscommunication between the two of them
- 00:12:27okay so we can also see that maybe
- 00:12:29they're not quite good at communicating
- 00:12:31quite clearly so obviously we can see
- 00:12:33towards the end she definitely is happy
- 00:12:34to marry him
- 00:12:36however she's also contemplating this
- 00:12:39ring so we we're kind of left on a bit
- 00:12:40of a cliffhanger wondering oh actually
- 00:12:42is this ring belonging to somebody else
- 00:12:43has she made a promise to somebody else
- 00:12:45we don't know okay so as I mentioned
- 00:12:47this is the insert that goes with this
- 00:12:49paper and let's have a look at the
- 00:12:53answers the model responses are prepared
- 00:12:55for this particular exam paper Okay so
- 00:12:58let's start with question number one
- 00:12:59which is nice and brief worth one Mark
- 00:13:02we'll ask the cat lines one to four and
- 00:13:04identify a word or phrase that shows
- 00:13:06that the extract takes place as the Sun
- 00:13:08is setting as I mentioned there's lots
- 00:13:09of pathetic fallacy and here we've got
- 00:13:11darkening Countryside as well as top
- 00:13:12Twilight so I just decided to select
- 00:13:14darkening Countryside that's really it
- 00:13:16when it comes to answering this question
- 00:13:18number one but let's have a look at
- 00:13:20question number two so here you also
- 00:13:21look at lines 10 to 14 okay so basically
- 00:13:25around this part of the extract and
- 00:13:30you're asked to discuss or to mention
- 00:13:33two things that the reader learns about
- 00:13:34Lucy's early life so this has been
- 00:13:36basically where she's talking about you
- 00:13:38know how difficult her early life was
- 00:13:40she's talking about also her dad her mom
- 00:13:43and how just their lives were you know
- 00:13:45their lives were really really difficult
- 00:13:46as a result of their poverty so again
- 00:13:49keeping question number two fairly brief
- 00:13:51as is just worth two Marks here you're
- 00:13:54asked to either use your own words or
- 00:13:56quotations so I've decided to use my own
- 00:13:58words she was really poor and her father
- 00:14:00struggled with poverty and that's really
- 00:14:02it for questions one and two so let's
- 00:14:04move on to look at my response for
- 00:14:06question number three
- 00:14:07so let's look at how to answer question
- 00:14:09number three this is the language and
- 00:14:11structure question firstly make sure you
- 00:14:13are extremely crystal clear on the
- 00:14:15difference between language and
- 00:14:16structure okay if you're not clear on
- 00:14:17all the different language techniques
- 00:14:18and structural techniques I suggest you
- 00:14:20watch the video or I'll go over this
- 00:14:21okay but remember language relates to
- 00:14:23stuff like just the basic building
- 00:14:24blocks of language and English Okay
- 00:14:26nouns verbs adjectives adverbs but also
- 00:14:30language techniques like similes
- 00:14:31metaphor alliteration pathetic fallacy
- 00:14:34structure relates to for example how
- 00:14:36there's a um extract to begin how is it
- 00:14:39like in the middle how does it end
- 00:14:40structure also relates to things like
- 00:14:43sentence types it relates to things like
- 00:14:45repetition and listing okay so let's
- 00:14:48have a look at this and of course in
- 00:14:49this instance you asked to look at just
- 00:14:51lines 28 to 42 and as I mentioned I've
- 00:14:54actually pre-prepared this so what I
- 00:14:56want to do is just walk you through this
- 00:14:57okay so it's basically from here within
- 00:15:00the extract all the way to
- 00:15:03line 42. so this paragraph Okay so we're
- 00:15:09asked to talk about how the white uses
- 00:15:11language and structure to show Sir
- 00:15:14Michael's thoughts and feelings about
- 00:15:15Lucian as I mentioned here literally I
- 00:15:18would suggest have two paragraphs two
- 00:15:20pill paragraphs one language and one
- 00:15:23structure as this is worth just six
- 00:15:24marks so let's have a look
- 00:15:26firstly so Michael appears to have
- 00:15:28conflicting thoughts and feelings about
- 00:15:30Lucy whilst he is elated happy to
- 00:15:34discover that she has no other male
- 00:15:35suitors so no other men who want to
- 00:15:37marry her
- 00:15:39he seems dejected which means sad that
- 00:15:42she does not match his emotional
- 00:15:43intensity okay that's my opening point
- 00:15:46where you're writing an opening Point
- 00:15:48try to
- 00:15:49um write more than one sentence and of
- 00:15:51course making it clear that you're
- 00:15:52relating it back to the keywords in the
- 00:15:54question which as I mentioned try to
- 00:15:56highlight here and then know what you're
- 00:15:58going for okay this is my opening point
- 00:15:59I'm basically saying that so Michael is
- 00:16:01sad he's dejected okay
- 00:16:04here's my evidence he is both glad of
- 00:16:06her reply and jot that's my evidence
- 00:16:08I've embedded two little bits of
- 00:16:10evidence here the contradictory
- 00:16:13adjectives the opposite adjectives
- 00:16:15language glad and Jarred indicate he
- 00:16:19feels confused by her he feels strongly
- 00:16:22for Lucy hence he may sense that her
- 00:16:24emotions do not match his this is my
- 00:16:27explanation where I'm talking about
- 00:16:29language techniques adjectives and how
- 00:16:32we can see Sir Michael's thoughts and
- 00:16:34feelings about Lucy are being emphasized
- 00:16:36so that's my language point now linking
- 00:16:38back to the question thus it's clear
- 00:16:40that Sir Michael's thoughts and feelings
- 00:16:41about Lucy clash as he has mixed
- 00:16:44emotions okay that's my opening peel
- 00:16:47paragraph and I've talked about language
- 00:16:49however I need to also balance this
- 00:16:53discussion with structure so this is now
- 00:16:54where I'm going to talk about it in my
- 00:16:56second pill paragraph
- 00:16:58additionally he holds pessimistic
- 00:17:00thoughts and feelings about Lucy as he
- 00:17:02appears to doubt her commitment he seems
- 00:17:04uncertain as he leaves her again this is
- 00:17:07my opening Point as you can see I've
- 00:17:08added two sentences in fact he carried
- 00:17:11the corpse of Hope as he left her this
- 00:17:15is my evidence of embedded the quotation
- 00:17:17this complex sentence structure vividly
- 00:17:20conveys the death of Sir Michael's hopes
- 00:17:22as he seems uncertain as to whether Lucy
- 00:17:25will require his love whether she's
- 00:17:26going to return his love
- 00:17:29Braden's use of a metaphors have also
- 00:17:32mixed in a little bit of language okay
- 00:17:34you don't always have to just keep it
- 00:17:35strictly to language and structure you
- 00:17:37can also mix it up as I've done here but
- 00:17:39make sure you always mention language
- 00:17:41and structure in your paragraphs so that
- 00:17:44you can be answering both parts of the
- 00:17:46question so Brandon's uses a metaphor
- 00:17:48alluding to a corpse indicates that
- 00:17:50Michael is resigned as he senses Lucy
- 00:17:52May reject him when he next sees her
- 00:17:54that's my explanation consequently or
- 00:17:58rather I've actually repeated
- 00:17:59consequently okay so consequently it's
- 00:18:01evident that Sir Michael is despairing
- 00:18:03he's sad his thoughts and feelings about
- 00:18:05Lucy are cynical as he may not know
- 00:18:08where he stands with her so that's my
- 00:18:11link back to the question one basically
- 00:18:12saying how Sir Michael feels about Lucy
- 00:18:16he feels like you know maybe she's
- 00:18:17rejecting him he doesn't he feels like
- 00:18:19quite negative towards how she feels
- 00:18:22about him he he's kind of like left on
- 00:18:24tender hooks a little bit okay he's not
- 00:18:25sure so that's really how to answer
- 00:18:27question number three go for two people
- 00:18:29paragraphs if it's easier keep one
- 00:18:31strict kitchen language one strictly to
- 00:18:33structure you can mix both but make sure
- 00:18:34you always mention language and
- 00:18:36structure otherwise you're not answering
- 00:18:38the full question and you're not going
- 00:18:39to give yourself access or the
- 00:18:41opportunity to answer it in forward in a
- 00:18:43way where you're going to get the full
- 00:18:44marks okay the four six marks
- 00:18:48let's look at how to approach question
- 00:18:49number four so in this question which is
- 00:18:52worth 15 marks you're asked to talk
- 00:18:55about or rather this is the evaluation
- 00:18:57question okay you're asked to evaluate
- 00:18:59whatever statement you're given okay so
- 00:19:02as we can see in this question you're
- 00:19:03told and this extract is an attempt to
- 00:19:05show the relationship between Lucy and
- 00:19:07Sir Michael okay keywords is what's the
- 00:19:09relationship like Lucy and Sir Michael
- 00:19:11evaluate how successful this is achieved
- 00:19:14remember evaluation means you're firstly
- 00:19:16saying how successful is the author in
- 00:19:18showing this relationship between Lucy
- 00:19:19and son Michael I would say it's not an
- 00:19:21argument to say the author does this
- 00:19:22effectively but also when you're
- 00:19:24evaluating you're talking about it in
- 00:19:26relation to language and structure I
- 00:19:27keep on talking about language and
- 00:19:28structure it's really important to know
- 00:19:29the distinction between the two because
- 00:19:31it also applies not only to question
- 00:19:33number three but also question number
- 00:19:34four this evaluation question so let's
- 00:19:37have a look at how I've approached it
- 00:19:39okay
- 00:19:40so as you can see here for this 15
- 00:19:42marker I actually start with an
- 00:19:44introduction in terms of how the
- 00:19:46relationship between Lucy and Sir
- 00:19:47Michael is shown to just sum it up okay
- 00:19:49see interest and conclusions is not
- 00:19:51completely essential to your essay
- 00:19:53however it's almost like the icing on
- 00:19:55the cake okay you're kind of tying a bow
- 00:19:57and really bringing this to your
- 00:19:58examiner and showing look I have like a
- 00:20:00really strong handle of this extract so
- 00:20:03let's look at the introduction
- 00:20:04the extract depicts an intriguing
- 00:20:06relationship dynamic between Lucy and
- 00:20:08Sir Michael at first they appear to
- 00:20:10follow what we would expect as Lucy
- 00:20:12seems weaker and subservient to so my
- 00:20:14course observient means obedient given
- 00:20:17her lower status yet by the end the
- 00:20:19power appears to shift to Lucy as Sir
- 00:20:21Michael's hope seem pinned on her
- 00:20:23decision this goes back to what I was
- 00:20:24talking about with this extract where at
- 00:20:26first Lucy seems to be kind of um on her
- 00:20:29knees she is the one that's poorer but
- 00:20:32actually as a passage progresses it
- 00:20:33seems like he's the one who actually is
- 00:20:36really desperate for her um attention
- 00:20:38he's the one that's desperate for her
- 00:20:40approval okay and that's literally what
- 00:20:42of summarized hair okay that's already
- 00:20:44adding some analytical depth in my
- 00:20:47response let's look at the first peel
- 00:20:49paragraph remember all my paragraphs
- 00:20:51always structure them as Point evidence
- 00:20:52explanation link so let's have a look
- 00:20:55at the opening of the extract Lucy looks
- 00:20:57subservient again obedient as she kneels
- 00:20:59before Sir Michael her physical kneeling
- 00:21:01clearly indicates her lower social
- 00:21:03status and we assume Sir Michael
- 00:21:05controls this relationship that's my
- 00:21:06opening Point relating it back to the
- 00:21:08keywords in the question remember and
- 00:21:10note how much I use these keywords it's
- 00:21:13not you're not over repeating yourself
- 00:21:15when you're repeating some of these
- 00:21:16keywords you really clearly indicating
- 00:21:18the examiner I understand what this
- 00:21:20assignment has asked me to do
- 00:21:22in fact she fell on her knees yet sir
- 00:21:25Michael commanded no Lucy no that's my
- 00:21:27evidence and hair actually in my
- 00:21:30evidence I am juxtaposing two different
- 00:21:33bits okay she fell on her knees but also
- 00:21:35when he basically said no Lucy no
- 00:21:37because when you're writing about these
- 00:21:39characters and talking about like their
- 00:21:40relationship sometimes a powerful way to
- 00:21:42do this is to talk about what does one
- 00:21:43character say versus what does another
- 00:21:45character say okay that's what I've done
- 00:21:47the verb feel reveals to us how Meek and
- 00:21:50deferential Lucy is as you can see I'm
- 00:21:52using ambitious language deferential
- 00:21:54obedient Meek means like kind of calm a
- 00:21:57little bit shy
- 00:21:58moreover Sir Michael's emphatic
- 00:22:01repetition of no repetition structure
- 00:22:04so I've used language verb and now
- 00:22:06repetition structure shows he is used to
- 00:22:09commanding her
- 00:22:10from the outset of the extract from the
- 00:22:12start of the extract whereas readers get
- 00:22:14the impression that Sir Michael controls
- 00:22:15and dominates their relationship as you
- 00:22:17can see here in my explanation I've
- 00:22:19talked about language verb structure
- 00:22:22repetition but also I've then emphasized
- 00:22:25and analyzed what does this show about
- 00:22:27Lucy and Sir Michael what I'm saying
- 00:22:28here is that actually it seems like Lucy
- 00:22:30at first she's used to being obedient
- 00:22:32she's just being the servant and so
- 00:22:34Michael also the way he speaks to her
- 00:22:36he's just basically instructing her
- 00:22:37telling her what to do now linking back
- 00:22:39to the question hence
- 00:22:41going to the next page
- 00:22:44Braden so I can say the author the
- 00:22:46writer or the surname so in this case
- 00:22:49I've decided to use her surname Braden
- 00:22:51successfully depicts a vast power
- 00:22:53difference in Lucy and Sir Michael's
- 00:22:55relationship at first we get the
- 00:22:57impression that Lucy is quite powerless
- 00:22:59this is my link back to the question now
- 00:23:02here's my second peel paragraph
- 00:23:05nonetheless as the extract progresses
- 00:23:07there seems to be a shift in their
- 00:23:09relationship we've gradually discovered
- 00:23:10that so Michael is desperate to marry
- 00:23:12Lucy and he's very
- 00:23:15self-deprecating self-deprecating means
- 00:23:17like you know um you're almost like
- 00:23:19making fun of yourself in order to make
- 00:23:21yourself more likeable to someone else
- 00:23:22okay you're kind of putting yourself
- 00:23:23down so this is my second opening point
- 00:23:26I'm working through the extract okay so
- 00:23:28I started off here I'm now working
- 00:23:30through the extract
- 00:23:33he wonders
- 00:23:35do you dislike me yet Lucy reassures him
- 00:23:37by affirming dislike you no no here's my
- 00:23:40evidence again I'm juxtaposing what he
- 00:23:42says versus what Lucy says look at my
- 00:23:44explanation
- 00:23:45however so Michael is still unsure and
- 00:23:47he calls himself a romantic thought in
- 00:23:50fact actually I've added three separate
- 00:23:51bits of evidence you've got he asked you
- 00:23:53just like me she then says just like you
- 00:23:55know and then this is a third bit of
- 00:23:56evidence a romantic fool so here's my
- 00:23:59evidence now let's look at my
- 00:24:00explanation
- 00:24:02Braden's use of dialogue okay so this is
- 00:24:05technique dialogue is effective in
- 00:24:07Shifting The Power Balance
- 00:24:09so Michael seems insecure and uncertain
- 00:24:12and although Braden employs High
- 00:24:15performer in Lucy's reply remember hyper
- 00:24:174 is when you ask a question and
- 00:24:18immediately answer it
- 00:24:20so although Brighton employs High
- 00:24:22Performance and Lucy's reply to convey
- 00:24:24her interest the adjective old shows us
- 00:24:27some Michael thinks he is not good
- 00:24:29enough for Lucy just be clear by the way
- 00:24:31high performer is Lucy she asked dislike
- 00:24:33you that's the question then she
- 00:24:35immediately answered it no no okay
- 00:24:36that's a structural technique
- 00:24:38the shift surprises us because Lucy has
- 00:24:41so much to gain from this marriage
- 00:24:44that's my explanation talked about
- 00:24:47dialogue talked about her before I've
- 00:24:50also mentioned adjectives so this is
- 00:24:52really heavy in both language and
- 00:24:53structure analysis this is my
- 00:24:55explanation now linking back to the
- 00:24:56question
- 00:24:57thus the author shows Lucy and Sir
- 00:25:00Michael's relationship changes Lucy
- 00:25:02appears to wield to hold far more power
- 00:25:05as Sir Michael begs her to love and
- 00:25:08marry him that's my second peel
- 00:25:10paragraph let's have a look at my third
- 00:25:12pill point
- 00:25:13furthermore Lucia pierced to accept his
- 00:25:15proposal yet her lack lost a reply
- 00:25:17reveals so Michael loves her more than
- 00:25:19she loves him in their relationship
- 00:25:20lackluster means there's not that much
- 00:25:22enthusiasm
- 00:25:24so Michael Speaks continuously as he
- 00:25:26tries to justify how they would make a
- 00:25:28very happy couple so that's my opening
- 00:25:30point this is my evidence now this is my
- 00:25:32explanation oh actually this is even a
- 00:25:34bit more of evidence nonetheless Lucy
- 00:25:36simply replies yes okay so Sir Michael
- 00:25:38he says evidence one they can make a
- 00:25:40very happy couple but Lucy replies yes
- 00:25:43Brandon depicts Sir Michael speaking in
- 00:25:46a complex sentence this contrasts Lucy's
- 00:25:48monosyllabic reply where's readers can
- 00:25:50see that Sir Michael is extremely
- 00:25:51committed to Lucy's desperately seeks
- 00:25:53her approval yet Lucy's dispassionate
- 00:25:56reply makes us wonder whether she is
- 00:25:58completely committed to him again here
- 00:26:01I've mentioned complex sentence I've
- 00:26:03mentioned monosyllabic language okay
- 00:26:06which is a language technique
- 00:26:09and I mentioned how this shows them okay
- 00:26:11this um illustrates again the shift in
- 00:26:14their power summer calls the one that's
- 00:26:15like really you know Keen he really
- 00:26:18wants her to like him whilst Lucy just
- 00:26:20you know she's like okay yeah fine we'll
- 00:26:22get married now here's the link
- 00:26:24as a result Lucy within this part of the
- 00:26:26extract appears to dominate their
- 00:26:28relationship so Michael seems besotted
- 00:26:31obsessed in love and she appears almost
- 00:26:34indifferent that's my link back to the
- 00:26:36question finally as the extract draws to
- 00:26:38a close there seems to be an emotional
- 00:26:40disconnect in their relationship so
- 00:26:41Michael feels confused and uncertain yet
- 00:26:43Lucy is Overjoyed about his proposal
- 00:26:46that's my
- 00:26:48point for this paragraph let's have a
- 00:26:50look at the evidence
- 00:26:52Sir Michael does not feel Joy
- 00:26:55only disappointment so joy and evidence
- 00:26:57and disappointment are my bits of
- 00:26:59evidence nonetheless Lucy is excited to
- 00:27:02experience no more dependence no more
- 00:27:03drudgery second bit of evidence or third
- 00:27:05bit of evidence now I'm using Lucy
- 00:27:08here's my explanation
- 00:27:10the writer uses oxymoron to show Sir
- 00:27:13Michael's conflicting feelings yet the
- 00:27:15listing in Lucy's language conveys her
- 00:27:17contentment oxymoron is language listing
- 00:27:20structure we as readers realize Sir
- 00:27:23Michael and Lucy cannot read each other
- 00:27:25well they seem to have misunderstood
- 00:27:27each other again now this explanation
- 00:27:30I'm basically saying number one here's
- 00:27:31my language and structure technique but
- 00:27:32also when it comes to the relationship
- 00:27:33they actually can't really tell what the
- 00:27:35other is thinking right Lucy's like oh
- 00:27:37I'm really happy at marrying this guy so
- 00:27:39Michael's even thinking does she even
- 00:27:40like me that's the main point I'm making
- 00:27:43in this pill paragraph accordingly Broad
- 00:27:45and successfully portrays a huge
- 00:27:47emotional gap between sir Marco and Lucy
- 00:27:49they appear to have misunderstood each
- 00:27:51other's intent that's my link back to
- 00:27:52the question now I finish off with a
- 00:27:55conclusion finishing off
- 00:27:58um quite strong
- 00:28:00in conclusion it's clear that lucians
- 00:28:03and Michael's relationship goes against
- 00:28:04what we would expect as readers even if
- 00:28:06at first Samuel appears to dominate
- 00:28:08their relationship by the end it is Lucy
- 00:28:10who seems to be in the driving seat so
- 00:28:12Michael seems eager for her to accept
- 00:28:14his marriage proposal although Lucy is
- 00:28:16happy to marry him we can see she does
- 00:28:17not have the same level of passion as he
- 00:28:20does that's my conclusion basically
- 00:28:22saying okay at first the relationship
- 00:28:24looks like this but actually as the
- 00:28:25passage progresses we can see that
- 00:28:27um contrary to what we thought Lucy is
- 00:28:30the one that seems to have way more
- 00:28:31power even if she's poorer while Sir
- 00:28:32Michael is the one who's kind of begging
- 00:28:34for her okay so that's hard to respond
